SCHOLARSHIP AND DISCOUNTS Admission to school • Registration for High school started on 1st March 2013. Entrance Examination • Applicants for grade 7 (having completed grade 6) will sit for the Scholarship and Entrance Examination which will be held on 27th April, 2013 at 9:00 am. • Students for grade 8,9,10 and 11 will be accepted based on their Placement Test results. The placement tests can be taken EVERY SATURDAY, at 10:00 in the morning or 14:00 in the afternoon. • Students for grade 7, who will not join the Scholarship and Entrance Examination on 27th April, will take a placement test. The test dates are subsequent Saturdays after 27th April. Scholarship and Discounts • Zaman International School offers scholarships to Cambodian citizens who have completed grade 6. The questions in the Scholarship and Entrance Examination cover English, Mathematics and Science. The entire test will be in English. • The Scholarship and Entrance Examination for grade 7 (having completed grade 6) will be held ONCE only on 27th April, 2013 at 09:00 a.m. • The top 3 (three) students who get the highest score in all questions will have the right to receive a full scholarship based on the grade 7 Scholarship and Entrance Examination. The tuition, registration and enrolment fees will be waived. The 4th, 5th & 6th students will receive a 20% discount from THE TUITION FEE only. • The total score for the Scholarship and Entrance Examination is 60 (sixty) points. In order to be considered for the scholarships, students must score at least 50 (fifty) out of 60 (sixty) points. Students with total scores below 50 points will not be eligible for the scholarship. • If Zaman Primary students register for grade 7 from 1st March until 30th April, 2013, the enrolment fee is 750 USD and they will be eligible for a 50% discount for the summer course. Please see Tuition Fee Policy for more details. • Applicants who register for grade 7 from 1st March until 30th April, 2013 will be eligible for a 50% discount for the summer course. • The full summer school fee for grade 7 is 450 USD. Sibling Discount • Two or more children attending Zaman International School and Zaman University from the same family will receive a 15% discount from THE TUITION FEE charged for the second child and any other subsequent children. • Definition of sibling: This discount is only for real and proven brothers and sisters. By Sokunnita Chhay, Pichtevy Lim, Sreypich Try 7F “We are going to have a Gravity Car Race Competition…’’ announced our physics teacher. We all felt excited after hearing this. We signed up for it and started choosing our group members. Before the competition, we tested our car to check if something went wrong or not. We repeated the testing several times until the event started. After seeing some of the cars racing, we started to lose hope little by little, because all the participants did very well. When it was our turn, we felt nervous yet excited. When the car was set to go, we all hoped it would travel a long distance. The car set off and finally stopped in front of a wall which seemed to be far away… “21 metres” one of the teachers announced. The moment he announced the distance that our little car had traveled, we all jumped and screamed and ran to our car. It was such a good feeling to know that we, as the group of 3 had won first place in the girls’ section. We never thought we would do this well. We’re so happy that we could achieve first place this time.

By Lucklita Theng 7F For the first time in Zaman’s history, a Gravity Car Race was being held. Just hearing the words made us very curious. Loads of questions came to our mind, what are we going to learn from this? When are we doing this? And especially how are we going to do this? Gladly, the answers came as soon as we started wondering. When we had found out all the details, we got into groups of up to three and began to work right away. Our group included two of my friends, Noryda Phal, Baramey Phan, and me. At first, we did some thinking about the car we were going to make. Then, as I had most of the materials and enough assistance to make it, it was decided I would handle the physical work. It wasn’t easy but my friends gave me motivation and plenty of ideas about how to work faster. Some did come in handy. When the car was finished, it was time to test it. We brought our car to test during a physics session. Our car was ok but it needed bigger wheels, a heavier load and thicker nylon strings. We had a group discussion for a moment and decided what to do. At the competition, we waited with anxiety and excitement as each of the grades raced their cars. It took a while till it was our turn, seventh graders to race. As I watched my friends, in other groups, race their cars, I cheered them on with excitement. When it was our turn, I prayed and prayed that nothing bad would happen. The results were fantastic! Not only was the car racing fine, it went the second furthest! That was it! We won second place! Woo hoo! I cheered as another friends’ group’s car won first place! 7-F had stolen first and second place. To me, that was awesome. Noryda told me that she felt really happy that things finally worked out and paid off. Baramey added that she was flattered to have our group be in the top three winners!

By Long Long Duch, Mao Lokey, Sopheakbunna Ben 8C Every year, our school has a lot of competitions. But this year is really special. We got to compete in a Gravity Car Race Competition. This competition was the first success that I had with my group. I want to say thanks to my teacher and my sister Somania. they always support me. It’s a real pleasure. I really enjoy it. If you want to be successful, you have to try harder and harder to get it and don’t forget everything is in our hands. By Kimrotha Ty 11A To be the winner of the competition, my partner and I worked really hard. We had failed in our attempts to make a gravity car a couple of times and it had been a waste of time and money. So we decided to give up, but one day my parents told me not to give up so I followed their advice. Then I went to ask my teacher to give me some good advice. After that my partner and I decided to build the car again but this time we had thought very hard before we build it .Finally our new car was completed and we took it for a first test and it really worked. At last! I’d like to thank Mr. Davut and the students of 11A for their brilliant ideas. Without their support I’m sure I might not have won this competition.

By Chhayvireak Hak, Seng Hap Ouk 7A When we first heard the news of the gravity car challenge, we weren’t really excited about it because first of all every class was competing and we thought there was no chance of winning against grades that are higher than us. After the news had been around for about a week, we finally decided that we actually wanted to join in the fun that everybody was having. We signed up and the bad news came when we saw the deadline date for the challenge: only 2 days left. We rushed home and started working on it. We started a plan and it was in the shape of a truck, we took it to the carpenter and rushed them to finish in one day. I was surprised that they finished it so fast. After school when I got home we started painting the car. We had a plan to make it colorful but it didn’t look good on the car so we just went with plain white and gray. We let it dry overnight and in the morning after breakfast we tested the car and I was pretty impressed with how far it could go. We actually did some rearrangement on the wheelbase to make it go even farther. There was no time to waste, we weren’t done with fixing the wheelbase and we only had 20 minutes left until the tournament. We were glad we had it done just in time and got to school fast enough. We saw the cars that higher grades made and pretty much they were huge and stiff. We were pretty much the underdog when we placed our car next to everyone else’s. We saw a few people race before us and they did pretty well, but now it was our turn to race. Our heart was pumping hard and this made us very nervous, we set up our position and added a little extra touch to it by placing a bass in the car to make it look cooler and to attract more attention. The car started, gravity was pulling the piece of metal down, making the car go forward, farther and farther it went until it hit its stop point. The measure was 46 meters, losing by a little. We had our second try and this time we took out the bass to reduce the weight of the car and it worked as it got around 48 meters until it stopped. Our third try was our last chance and as the car pushed off; we were all watching carefully and closely following the car, every stride it took until it reached its limit point which was around about 50 meters. We were disappointed that we didn’t get first place, but we still cheered and were very proud that we had done very well and got second place, as we are the youngest in the school. We were happy about our results, as the first place car was 4 grades above us and the difference between our cars was only a few meters. We would like to thank everyone in 7A for helping us with this and especially our homeroom teacher Mr. Mehmet Esen and our physics teacher Mr. Davut Aslan for helping us with this challenge.

By Mehlika Kapukaya 9E Gravity is a force of attraction that exists between any two objects. There is a force of gravity between the sun and the Earth, between the Earth and us, and even between two marbles. In other words, without gravity there would be no life. Even if there were, it would be very difficult to control the environment and ourselves. We wouldn’t be able to sleep without flying, we wouldn’t be able to drink or eat, change our clothes, drive a car, walk or run or even play basketball, football, tennis... Every single thing depends on gravity. It would be really difficult to live without it. Imagine a world in which everything would be flying and moving around. Birds wouldn’t be able to fly, there would be no airplanes, no flies, everything would crash into each other. There is even one quote about this, ‘It’s a good thing we have gravity, or else when birds died they’d just stay up there. Hunters would be all confused’, by Stephen Wright (an American actor and writer). But there is something else which will cause more trouble; oceans and seas!!! We have never seen any sea or ocean flying or upside down right? Imagine something like that, it would be awful. Everything would be mixed up. But hopefully our ‘King Gravity’ won’t let this happen. It pulls everything on it into the center and keeps them still, without flying. These are only a few examples of gravity from our daily life. To understand the importance of it and why it exists, we can just look around us. Think of an ant, it is very light. But even an ant wouldn’t be able to walk on the earth without gravity. Gravity is that important for us! “NO GRAVITY: NO LIFE”

Trip to
Kampong Som
By Rothvichet Poch, Sunly Lim, Allyas Iskandar Bin Ahmad Jais, So Panha Seng 8B We went to Kampong Som with our homeroom teacher Mr. Mustafa Ozgur. We met up with each other at the bus station at around 7 am. The bus left at 7:30 am. It took five hours and on the way it was boring. After 3 hours the bus stopped at Pich Nel mountain and we went to a restaurant for breakfast. We arrived at Kampong Som at 12:30 pm and took a tuk-tuk to the hotel. We hadn’t discusséd which hotel we should stay at, so the tuk-tuk driver took us to a hotel called Malibu near Occheuteal beach. We checked the room and it was a great place for us to stay. At 1 pm we went to the restaurant and had lunch and it was very good. Around 1:30 pm we called our friend Chanbillyt to pick us up and take us to his house. When we got to his house, we looked at his fish and it was big and orange colored and I saw the driver catch a lizard and feed it to the fish. It was awesome. At 3 pm we drove back to the hotel and had a swim. There were a lot of hermit crabs which we caught and put in a pot. Two hours after swimming, we called our friend Sokheang, who drove us to Sarpino’s Pizza restaurant to have dinner. Our teacher ordered a large pizza for us and it was great. On the second day, we woke up at 7 am, changed our clothes and ate breakfast. After breakfast we went for a swim then we packed up and called the tuk-tuk driver. We went to the “Kbal Chay‘’ waterfalls at Chhay mountain. It took an hour, but it was very fun to go by tuktuk. We arrived at 10:30 am, we took a photo of the waterfalls and stayed there too long, so we had to hurry to get the bus back to Phnom Penh. We arrived at 4:30 pm and got on the bus without lunch. We arrived back at Phnom Penh at 6 pm. This is the greatest holiday we have ever had and I would like to thank our homeroom teacher Mr. Mustafa Ozgur.

T rip to V By Punnreay Pal 12C 12-C have been having so much fun throughout the first term of our school year. On 1st February we planned to go to Vietnam as a class for three days and two nights. Our teacher didn’t book a hotel and bus for us. However, we know that he usually says “just relax man” so our trip was well-prepared by his friend in Vietnam within just a few hours. On Saturday 2nd we left Phnom Penh from the bus station at 5 am after we met and our journey was started. After 5 hours of deep sleep, we reached the border between Cambodia and Vietnam and then we continued on our trip to Ho Chi Minh City for about 2 hours until we reached the city at 1:30 pm. The bus dropped us off at Hotel Nhat Ha 2 where we had stayed last year on New year’s eve. The hotel was convenient and fairly priced. At 3:00 in the afternoon

we headed to Vincom, one of the biggest shopping malls in Ho Chi Minh City. Teacher Selmani gave us 2 hours for shopping inside the building. Most of us were window shopping in the mall. Later, when we met at 5 pm, we were starving for some food so we went to Pizza Hut for our dinner. As we were starving, we ordered too many pizzas and in the end we couldn’t finish all of them because it was like most of our friends weren’t able to walk. Furthermore we were fortunate enough to have the chance to taste the first Starbucks coffee in Vietnam, after we had waited in a long queue for about 1 hour. The coffee was quite strong because they make it that way for Vietnamese people since they are used to drinking strong coffee. Our plan was to go to the cinema on the first night we arrived in Vietnam, unluckily there weren’t any tickets available for us. So we immediately called our supervisors in Vietnam, who are friends with my homeroom teacher, and challenged them to a game of football. After an hour, we won the match 4-2. Everybody looked so exhausted after they had strived their best to beat the supervisors from Vietnam. There was nothing much to do besides sightseeing at night near the river of Saigon and we came back to the hotel.
V ietnam On the second day, we were all ready to spend the whole day at Dai Nam Theme Park which took about an hour and half to get to. The park was quite big compared to other theme parks all around the world and we had to get on the train to travel from place to place. Despite that we rented a bike to cycle around the park for the whole day. Moreover, we were having a thrilling time on the roller coaster and sliding in the snow house. It was almost 3 pm already and we had to leave the park and head back to the city. Most of us didn’t look tired at all, so we went to the new shopping centre near Parkson Paragon. It was the best shopping centre ever because there were a variety of stores inside the building which were affordable for us. As usual the class felt so hungry after they had shopped so we had dinner at the western food court on the top floor of the mall. Finally our plan was accomplished, because we managed to book the tickets for the movie “Mama”. That movie gave us goose bumps and left us frightened for the entire night. On the sunny morning that followed, some of our friends spent their time shopping before we came back to our capital city. Indeed, we spent a spectacular time with our homeroom teacher and friends. Preciously, we at least can spend our last moments together before we leave high school very soon.

Our teacher wanted us to play games and we took some photos. The birthday was exciting and we had a lot fun with our teachers; Mr.Oguz and Mr.Nefes.

Party By Oguz Coygun (Turkish Teacher) Every person has certain days which are considered as important and valuable days. For instance, a person may find the first day at primary-school important, for another person, the last day of school might be special. Their wedding day is important for some people and for some others, the day that he/she became a parent. Undoubtedly, one of these special and important days is a person’s birthday. As each person considers himself/herself as a valuable and precious being, he/she also finds his/her birthday a very important day. This can be seen evidently among the Khmer people. Taking this into account, we organized a Birthday Party for our Grade 7-C students. The chief aim in organizing such a party was to celebrate everyone’s birthday together, exchange our presents with each other, gather around a huge birthday cake and cut it together and enjoy some fun activities. As we witnessed the happiness on our students’ faces with our own eyes, we could not help saying: “We wish we had moments like this every day of our life.”

How your brain likes to b By Els Vandekerckhove (Biology Teacher) If you’re a student, you rely on one brain function above all others: memory. These days, we understand more about the structure of memory than we ever have before, so we can find the best techniques for training your brain to hang on to as much information as possible. The process depends on the brain’s neuroplasticity, its ability to reorganise itself throughout your life by breaking and forming new connections between its billions of cells. How does it work? Information is transmitted by brain cells called neurons. When you learn something new, a group of neurons activate in a part of the brain called the hippocampus. It’s like a pattern of light bulbs turning on. Your hippocampus is forced to store many new patterns every day. This increases hugely when you are revising. Provided with the right trigger, the hippocampus should be able to retrieve any pattern. But if it keeps getting new information, the overworked brain might go wrong. That’s what happens when you think you’ve committed a new fact to memory, only to find 15 minutes later that it’s disappeared again. So what’s the best way to revise? Here are six top tips to get information into your brain and keep it there.

Repeat yourself Pathways between neurons can be strengthened over time. Simple repetition – practising retrieving a memory over and over again – is the best form of consolidating the pattern. Use science to help you retrieve info Science tells us the ideal time to revise what you’ve learned is just before you’re about to forget it. And because memories get stronger the more you retrieve them, you should wait exponentially longer each time – after a few minutes, then a few hours, then a day, then a few days. This technique is known as spaced repetition. This also explains why you forget things so quickly after a week of cramming for an exam. Because the exponential curve of memory retrieval does not continue, the process reverses and within a few weeks, you have forgotten everything. Take regular breaks Breaks are important to minimise interference. When your hippocampus is forced to store many new (and often similar) patterns in a short space of time, it can get them jumbled up.

be treated at revision time Plan your revision so you can take breaks and revise what you’ve just learned before moving on to anything new. Avoid distractions Attention is the key to memorising. By choosing to focus on something, you give it a personal meaning that makes it easier to remember. In fact, most of our problems when it comes to revision have very little to do with the brain’s capacity for remembering things; we just struggle to devote our full attention to the task in hand. Playing music while revising will make your task harder, because any speech-like sounds, even at low volume, will automatically use up part of the brain’s attention capacity.
Sleep is vital We spend approximately a third of our lives sleeping and it’s never as important as during revision time. Sleep plays a critical role in memory consolidation – this is when the brain backs up short-term patterns and creates longterm memories. The process is believed to occur during deep sleep, We remember emotionally charged events far better than others, and this is especially the case if the emotion was a positive one. It is not always possible to have warm feelings about your revision, but if you can associate a particular fact with a visual, auditory or emotional experience from the past, then you have a better chance of remembering it, as you have created multiple pathways for retrieval. Try to reduce anxiety, because it uses up working memory, leaving a much smaller capacity available for processing and encoding new information. OUR PE RFECT GETAWAY By Boramey Rith 12E It was 4 o’clock in the morning. I was awoken by the sound of my phone ringing non-stop. Normally, I wouldn’t get up so early, so thanks are due to my friends. If it wasn’t for their constant reminding, I never would have gotten ready on time. We all agreed to meet up at Raksmey’s house at 5:30, and I was taken by surprise because everyone made it there on time. We left immediately after everyone arrived, heading to Zaman University to pick up our homeroom teacher and her family. We were so lost in excitement, that none of us realized we hadn’t had any breakfast yet. There were 15 of us and our stomachs were growling. Though we were a bit behind schedule we decided that travelling on an empty stomach wasn’t exactly the best idea, so we stopped by Caltex gas station and grabbed a bite to eat, while we waited for Sokyou to come from her house. Then, we were finally ready to hit the road. After a few hours of singing to every song we put on the stereo, most of us eventually got tired and started to fall asleep one by one. When I woke up we had arrived at Nataya Resort, Kampot. It was beautiful. Everyone raced out of the van to explore the place. We took a bunch of photos and had a lot of fun playing on the swing and playground they had laid out at the resort. It was kind of weird when people walked by and saw us playing in there but hon-

estly, I think that this is a reminder that even though we’re growing up, we’re still little kids at heart, the kids who can’t resist a playground. We also had lunch there. I don’t know whether it’s because we were exhausted from running around all day or the food actually tasted amazing, but we finished every bit of it and I think it’s safe to say that none of the money we spent on food went to waste. Even though it was a little expensive, it was definitely money well-spent. A few hours later, we got to our hotel in Kep. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, they did. The hotel was amazing. There was a big swimming pool and a 24-hour restaurant right under our room. Needless to say it was the perfect getaway. After we settled into our rooms, I couldn’t wait to swim and neither could everyone else. We changed into comfortable clothes and dove straight into the pool. Later our teacher, Mrs. Naima, brought her son to swim with us as well. We swam for an hour, and then got up to get ready for the BBQ we had set up on the beach. As the sun went down, we made a bonfire and everyone was sitting in a circle around it, telling stories under the stars; serenaded by the sound of the sea crashing on its shore. It was getting cold, but the fire kept us warm. It was definitely one of those moments that I’ll cherish forever. One of the reasons that we decided to go on this trip was that, this is our last year together and we wanted to do something unforgettable. Thanks to our homeroom teacher and abla for arranging the trip and making our dream come true. It was an amazing experience and getting there was half the fun.
12E 2 Days and 1 Night at Kompot By Porhour Ly 12E Since the beginning of our senior year, we 12E girls, have set a simple yet ambitious goal for ourselves; we want to make this last year of high school not just enjoyable, not only memorable, but unforgettable. In order to make our dream come true, fun activities are required. And of course, a spectacular trip is vital. After four exhausting days of battling with 17 exams in a row, we decided to unwind with a trip. Due to its geographical benefit of being less than 200 kilometers away from Phnom Penh, and its extraordinary beach, Kampot was the best destination. There were 18 of us, which also included our considerate homeroom teacher, Mrs.Naima, her husband, Mr. Muhtor, their two kids and our assistant teacher, Miss Merve (who we prefer to call ‘Abla’, which in Turkish means ‘big sister’). After 3 hours in the bus, we arrived at our first pit-stop, Nataya Resort, which is 16km from Kampot. We had our lunch there. The place was beautiful. Before lunch was served, we took some time to explore the resort. We ambled over a long, splendid, wooden pier, which took us all the way out into the middle of the sea. Resting in a hut on the pier, we were amazed by the surrounding nature. The scenic view was undeniably pleasing to the eyes; we couldn’t help but take dozens of pictures. After a long walk, we were starving, but lunch wasn’t ready yet. As I mentioned above, Mrs. Naima was a considerate homeroom teacher. She brought us a big plate of yummy Urama Somsa, an Uzbek traditional food. The dish had many layers and the flavor was awesome; the outside was quite crispy but the inner layers were rather fluffy, and once you reached its center, you could taste the beef. We left for our hotel, Palm House as soon as we finished our tasty and extremely expensive lunch. Palm House was more than I had expected it to be. There were so many things to see. Thus, while some of my friends went for a swim in the pool, Pagna and I excitedly climbed up an artificial tree house. From the top of the tree house, we were able to enjoy the whole view of what I love to call the architectural combinations of ancient and modern eras. Later, we had a wash and
got ready for the beach. We went shopping for food first and then went directly to the beach for dinner. We were all busy at the beach. Some of us prepared fruits, some began cooking the seafood, some went around acting like photographers and models, some attempted to play Chicken, and a few like me sat on the beach, looked up and wished upon the stars. That evening we had a seafood BBQ buffet for dinner. We bought a lot but didn’t manage to finish all of it. I finished my dinner quickly because it was time for the camp fire. Several friends and I began to construct our first ever camp fire. At the beginning, it was hopeless. And all I could think of was that we needed a miracle. Yet miracle is another word for effort. With toil and sweat and the right humidity and temperature, we created a miracle and successfully made a small yet stunning camp fire. We sat around the fire and made sure that our palms were facing it. To me, it was like a movie. It was so cool but we were not cold, neither were we merely warm. In fact, we were sweating. Due to the heat, we were literally steaming ourselves. Therefore, we decided to put on some music and maybe dance around the fire but unfortunately we couldn’t because it was getting too late. We then headed back to the hotel. There was no point ending the day like this, after all, time is priceless. So instead of going to bed, we went for another swim and gathered in a room for movies. Things didn’t go as planned. Sokyou’s hard disk couldn’t connect to her Mac Book (I really regret not bringing my old-fashioned yet functional laptop there). So we ended up talking till midnight. We woke up a bit late the next morning. We went to a waterfall, Toek Chhu, which was 9 kilometers away from Palm House. It was nice to have some fresh air and escape from the boring, toxic city life. We ended our trip with a massive lunch. Our ride back, like the ride there, took us 3 hours, but it seemed short because none of us wanted it to end. This trip didn’t only bring us happiness and memories; it also brought us closer together. Furthermore, we learnt that Mr. Muhtor is a completely different person outside the school. Actually, he was so fun to be around. We were so grateful to have Mrs. Naima, her beloved family and Abla with us on the trip. They filled the trip with fun and laughter. Mar- Apr 2013

By Nalita Sok, Priyanith Keo 10E Khavi was a tuk-tuk driver who worked hard and held on to his dreams even harder. As a tuk-tuk driver, he made an average of about $10 a day. His usual daily routine was to park his tuk-tuk at the sideway of the hotel and wait for guests to come out so that he could make appointments with them to take them around the town. He would sometimes work from 6 am to 10 pm and make nothing at all. If a passenger asked him how much they needed to pay him for the rides, he would tell the passenger to give him as much as he deserved. Most tuk-tuk drivers would probably rip you off for every penny they could squeeze out of you and sometimes would even triple the price. Khavi was not one of them. He was a diamond in the rough. He was a very responsible man who knew his priorities and devoted his life to eking out a better life for his family whilst holding on to this dream. He has two children whom he needs to educate. So, combining together his and his wife’s income (she is a vegetable seller at a local market), they worked hard to pay off bills and educate their kids, as well as keeping aside money to realize their dream – the dream of starting their own travel agency. He was an intelligent man who knew that success doesn’t come easy without any sacrifices. He was good at English and knew the facts about all the tourist sites. The only thing that was stopping him from realizing his dream was $$$. So he and his wife worked hard and saved every penny they earned and after 10 years, they had saved $5.000. He discovered that in order to be a tour guide he needed to pay $1,200. So with the sum of money he had, he took his first bold step in registering as a tour guide. He also made the wise choice of investing some of his money on buying land outside Siem Reap and hoping the value would double with growing tourism in the area. As time passed, nothing happened. He had no choice but to keep driving and hope for the best. However, as fate would have it, 3 years later things did turn out pretty well. The land he invested paid off handsomely and now he even owns his very own guest house! He was able to make his dreams come true. Life had finally given him a big break and the best thing is that Khavi’s guest house is right next to the hotel he used to work for. Khavi was just a simple man who dared to dream, who held on to his dream despite obstacles and with patience and perseverance, made his lifelong dream come true. Do you dare to dream?

Hydrogen Rocket By Vitou Sar 11B It was a tiring day after the Gravity Car Race, but nevertheless there was no time to waste, it was time to set off the Hydrogen Rockets!!! We started to prepare our rockets and gather in the Boys’ Side Playground. Two classes were involved: 11A and 11B. As soon as we started, one of our groups had their rocket explode...BOOOM!!! It was so loud, and there was a big silence after the rocket’s shocking explosion. After this incident, everyone was more cautious and aware, we started to check the ends of our bottle rockets to check that they were loose enough to fly. If it was a little bit too tight, there would be another explosion. Each group started to launch their rockets, but they mostly failed because the hydrogen production unit couldn’t produce enough hydrogen and also some of the gas leaked. Then it was the turn of my group. We had had a really bad start, our rocket had exploded because it had been too tight. But then Mr. Mustafa Dur told us we should try again because there was no problems with our launcher, we just needed to loosen up the edge of the rocket’s mouth. Things went well. It flew even higher than the top of the building just with a little bottle and some hydrogen!

Furtheration’s Fabulous Day Trip To Kean Svay By Kanika Srun 11F Leaving quite late in the morning, our trip started at 10 am. We planned to go at 9 am but we had to wait for our friends to come to the school first so that we could all leave together. This trip included many students, 18 in total, along with 2 teachers. It took us quite long to reach the destination. When we arrived we rushed over to the small stores that sell foods. Some of us wandered around and looked for food, some of us ordered rice and some of us were looking for a place to sit. Finally, at 11 am all of us came back to our place and sat altogether, chitchatting. Then at 12 pm, all of our meals were ready and we ate. The foods were nice and the atmosphere was lovely. So, we took lots of photos. Before going back, we went to the store again, buying things to bring home. We bought some fruits. It was a very memorable and unforgettable trip. We’re hoping to have another activity like this one soon.

While other kids were learning how to hold their pencil; this kid was learning piano, violin, taekwondo, and painting. Since birth, this child’s life had been planned ahead. John came from a rich and noble family. His father owned the biggest company in the country. His dad was a man full of pride and dignity. Losing and giving up were unacceptable for him. Living under the fear of his dad, John lived a life of obedience. He strived to be always the best, always on top. All that he lived for was to meet with his father’s expectations. Since he was a kid, he had never once gone against his dad’s wishes. The only time that John felt like he was living his own life, was when he was reading. He enjoyed reading books about doctors’ life stories, and was inspired by them. As he got older, while following his dad’s will, he also had his own thoughts, but was never able to express them. One day, while he was following the routine that his dad had planned for him, John felt like his life was meaningless. He wasn’t living the life that he wanted; he was living the life his dad wanted. Living to meet his dad’s expectations was making his life a misery. But because of his fear of his dad, he didn’t dare to say a word about it. But as the days went by, he reached his limit, he couldn’t take this anymore. He decided to tell his dad. After dinner, he walked into his dad’s room while he was entertaining guests and said “Dad, I won’t do this anymore.” His dad stared at him. “John, don’t you see I’m with guests right now?”. “We need to talk now” John replied. After that John’s dad apologized to his guests and excused them out. His dad stated irritably, “John, don’t you have any manners? You need to be taught.” Then he called out for the butler “You need to look after him and his manners carefully if you want to keep your job.” “Enough!” John shouted. “I’m sick of it. I won’t take this anymore. I want to do the things I want, not the things you want.” The whole family had already heard his shouts. His brothers came and tried to stop him, but he continued no matter what they said. “Dad, have you ever asked me what I want to do, or whether I want to take this class or that lesson? How was my school day? You never care about how I feel, all you care about is whether I’m on top, or whether I embarrass you or not? I’m not your robot that you can control without caring about my feelings. I won’t take this anymore. I have had enough of it!” John exclaimed. With an angry face his dad retorted, “I don’t care about your feelings! All that I was doing was to prepare the way for you in the future, so that you can take over the company!” John replied “I don’t want to take over the company. I don’t need all this fame, or money. All I want is a normal life, in which I live the way I want without caring whether I’m on top or not. I just want to be a normal doctor.” His dad shouted angrily, “Butler, lock him up in his room, and have his lessons there!” “You don’t need to do that,” John replied, “I will live my own life from now on.

Own Dream
I’m moving out.” “Move out”, his dad smirked. “If you dare to walk out of this door; don’t you come back again and anyone here don’t even think of supporting him financially. Now go and live your life!”. John went up to his room and packed. His mom, brothers, even his servants tried to stop him, but nothing could stop him now. He left with only one determination in his mind “I will prove to dad that you don’t need money, power, or reputation to be happy.” Even though John’s dad warned everyone not to, his mom and brothers secretly supported him. Life was not as easy as before, John needed to study while working, but one thing that he was sure of was that he was happy. With his mom’s and brothers’ support and his pay check from work; John successfully graduated and became a doctor. He accomplished his dream. He was doing what he liked, and living the way he wanted. No matter how happy John was, there was unhappiness in his heart. No matter how much he hated his dad, he still missed him; still wanted to see him. Every day, John went past the park by his place; he looked with envy at the children who were happily playing with their dads. He sometimes wondered how his dad was doing without him, did he miss him like he missed his dad. Was he doing okay? Was he healthy? The longings for his dad grew bigger and bigger as time went by. One day he decided to go over and check on his dad secretly. John’s dad also missed him and wondered how he was doing. He himself hired a private photographer to capture John’s everyday routine. Sometimes, he secretly helped him out also. Both the father and son secretly looked out for each other, but because of their pride neither of them would approach the other one first. While John was visiting his dad secretly as usual, all of a sudden his dad collapsed. He ran with all his might to his dad. “Somebody call an ambulance!” he shouted. He helped his dad with all he could until the ambulance arrived. “Are you my son John?” his dad asked in the ambulance. “Yes dad, I’m John.” John replied eagerly. “Son, please forgive this bad dad. I didn’t realize that I needed you; you were my happiness until you were gone. I know I was wrong. People have their own dreams and thoughts. Will you forgive me?” John replied. “Dad, I forgive you already. I’m sorry for making you worried.” Because of their pride, these two people kept each other worried for years. They didn’t realize how precious they were to each other until they lost each other. Appreciate what you have and tell the person you love: “I love you”.
