P

eople celebrate the New Year Eve with their families, friends and close relatives, but we decided to celebrate it with our friends and teachers at Zaman dormitory. The final night of 2010 was an unforgettable experience for 12 F. The school was not closed on December 31. We were so excited about our arrangements, but we waited patiently until the late afternoon. When the last bell rang, we rushed outside to sing the national anthem. Yet we still had more tasks to attend before we got together since we had extra classes after school.

Only after then we would meet at the dorm. As soon as our extra lessons were over at 7:30, we directly moved to dormitory from our houses. We were very hungry, but there was no food yet. Therefore, we had to cook the food by ourselves and some of the assistant teachers helped us. We shared the chores in small groups. One team was responsible for baking a cake, another for BBQ chicken and the last one prepared a sutlach. It was 10 pm when we completed our tasks but there were some problems with BBQ team because they weren’t able to make a fire. We were growling and finally we had our dinner at 11 o’clock. After the late dinner, we went to the bedrooms upstairs.

Later we got into conversation while we also prepared for the tea-time as it was nearly 12 o’clock. We took some time to prepare the fruit and desserts in the living room. At the same time some of us went upstairs to call the assistant teachers to join us for the New Year celebration before the clock struck 00:00. There was a cake and we wrote Happy New Year Freaks on the top. One of us stood up and sang a song. It was nearly time for New Year as the clock showed 23:58 on the TV screen. We all stood up, waited for the time to count down. A beautiful and touching friendship song came after the dancing music, which was why most of us ended the day with tears. And finally, it was midnight. We could hear the firework from the riverside. This way we ended 2010. We were exhausted and the long evening was full of fun. We all went to bed and drifted off to dream land. Last but not least, we would like to wish a Happy 2011 to all ZIS community. Sorida Park 12F

It was Human Rights Day on the 10th of December. We were 12 including our homeroom teacher, Mr. Enis. The plan was to have fun, have some adventure and get back home safely. Everyone arrived at 9:30am; Mr. Enis hired a school bus for us because our destination was a bit far. We arrived at 10:00am.We were very excited since this was our first time and also the first time in the school’s history. When we arrived everyone rushed out from the bus. We saw the battle field, - a huge area and lots of place for shelters. We could already imagine how fun it’ll be!! We quickly went and got our gears. The fee for each person was 20$ including a battle suit, helmet, a gun and 200 paintballs. We could buy more paintballs for extra money. For example, 100 bullets (paintballs) cost 10$.We could also rent some special guns which are for better aiming. Each gun cost 5$. Most of us rent a fancy- looking guns to have fun! It seemed like they were preparing to have bruises! Everyone took photos. We couldn’t wait for the battle to start! We went to the waiting zone to prepare ourselves. There were people helping us to get our gun ready, setting a miniature gas tank and loading the bullets. The gun was a bit heavy; some of us even used our full strength to carry it.

The referee told us what to do in the battle field. We were told not to cross the white line because we had to shoot each other from at least 15 feet away or the result would be fatal. Each group went to their position and both teams were waiting for the whistle to be blown. Everyone was extremely nervous. And... BEEEEEP!! The WAR began.

10 January 2011 Zaman International School - High School Newspaper

Bullets were flying everywhere! There was a friend of mine, Young Chhay. He went around the battle field behind his enemies back, and he started shooting Mr. Enis. He shot about 4 bullets at his back. That was really funny. Mr. Enis asked him, what he was doing. Because he thought that Young Chhay was his teammate, and Chhay replied,’ I’m shooting you’.

Eventually we ran out of bullets and that was the end of 1st round. We were allowed to carry only 100 bullets, for each round we bought 200 bullets. So we all had to get to the waiting zone and prepare again. Most of us kept complaining and asking who we were shot by. We kept laughing and enjoying the pain from the bruises. Second round started.

This time everyone was watching his backs, and the same thing happened.Bullets were flying around! Some people got a HEAD SHOT while running from one place to another. It was a real chaos! Finally, it was over. Mr. Enis talked to the manager of the place, and he asked for discounts for all Zaman students willing to play this kind of game. If you are interested,

please contact 10c’s homeroom teacher, Mr. Enis. It was very painful game but it was worth it. We finished at 11:30am. On the way back to school, Mr. Enis treated us with some biscuits, snacks, drinks. We talked about what had happened in the battle field, until we arrived back to school. Khong Song Toun 10C

On the second Saturday of December, 10F had a trip to Zaman University. We met up at school at 9 and we left the school at around 10.The drive took quite a while from our school but we didn’t mind it much because we had fun along the way. When we arrived, the secretary gave us a tour around the school. It was gorgeous.

university but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. We wanted to stay longer but unfortunately, our time was up. We thanked the secretary for showing us around. We continued on to Citycat Restaurant cause we were very hungry. We got one big table in one of the private rooms at Citycat. We decided that we didn’t want to eat individually so we ordered about 5 different kinds of food. Before the food came, we were noisy and when it came, we were silent because we were busy eating. It was a great meal. When we were done, we went outside to wait for the bus to come pick us up. Thanks to Mrs. Grace, it was an educational and incredible day for us.

Everything was cool, new and high-tech. We could imagine ourselves studying there. We were told that it was an examination day for the students so we had to keep quiet so we kept quiet and listened to the secretary speaking. We checked out the conference hall, the classrooms, the canteen, the library, the computer lab, where they keep wide screen com- Akchhara Chharom puters and extremely fast internet. The class- 10F rooms were just exquisite and modern. The secretary told us how the facility works there and the uniforms and the basic rules and regulations. We went from room to room commenting “Wow”. We all want to attend this

The University Visit We went to the Zaman University on one of our school activities. Our guide was Mr. Ramazan. The University has 35 rooms, 5 of which are lecture halls, and 30 are regular classrooms. Every room has cameras. The first place we went was the Conference Hall. Which can hold up to 232 people, a large Video screen, and surrounding sounds. Next, we went to the 3rd floor using the elevator; there we got to take a look at one classroom and a lecture hall. On the second floor they have some classroom, but also include the Dean’s office, a library, and the computer lab where we played a simple logic game using 4 pens and one candy as a prize. Afterwards, we returned to the 1st floor for some snacks and drinks at the canteen. Sambath Pich 9A

10F’s Dormitory Nights

P

leasant days in the dormitory are over. It is an unforgettable memory now. Preparing a cake, taking turn to mix the ingredients in it, frosting the chocolate and putting it into oven were some of interesting adventures we had in the dormitory. We all got excited and had fun. No need to mention about study times. We really appreciate our teachers` effort for us. We can never forget their goodness. They spare their time for us late in the evening, helping and explaining the subjects that we are weak in. When the cake was ready Miss Shirin called us downstairs for “tea time”. We quickly left our books and run down to the living room. We applied the chocolate frosting on the cake and wrote 10F on it. It was one of the best cakes that we’ve ever tasted! Everyone had fun that night. We got surprised by a well- prepared delicious breakfast prepared by Miss Shirin on the next day morning. Since we accidentally sprinkled too much salt on the egg, it was one of the saltiest eggs we’ve ever tasted! We went to a café nearby.

When we got there, it was quiet but after 5 minutes we arrived, it became noisy. We were enjoying and laughing a lot. We made a deal with our teachers. If we kept quiet for 10 minutes, without any sound, she would treat us. We agreed to do it but it wasn’t easy for us since there were so many funny things going on around. We had to use sign language to the waiter when we wanted some things. It was amazing that when one of our friends wanted tea, she wrote “Tea !!!” and raised up all of her 10 fingers and the person next to her raised up 1 finger meaning we wanted 11 cups of tea. We laughed so hard inside and we thought the deal was over but we managed to control ourselves. When the longest 10 minute was over, we let out our laughter which made everyone in the café look at us. We were having so much fun. When we returned to the dorm we finished our Physics project. Some of us were working on the experiment while the rest of us were being explained by our teacher. After working on the project we decided to watch a movie altogether. We enjoyed the movie a lot because there were many cute funny characters in the movie. It was the most enjoyable activity we have done together this year. Thanks a lot! 10F

General Knowledge Game

uddenly I found myself in a state of extreme jeopardy! There I was in the Zaman Conference Room, surrounded by the Grade 10 Boys who looked rambunctious and eager as ever to do battle. Already the festive atmosphere had been steadily increasing towards these last two hours of the school day in anticipation of the Victory Day Holiday on January 7 to follow. Looking out at the faces of these bright, amazing kids, I couldn’t help but think that this was not only the perfect time to have fun but also to begin reviewing for the upcoming Midterms at the end of the month by introducing this General Knowledge Game called Jeopardy! But what, you may ask, does jeopardy mean? To paraphrase thefreedictionary.com: jeopardy 1. danger of injury, loss, death, etc.; risk; peril; hazard his score was in jeopardy 2. (Law) Law danger of being convicted and losing the prize See also double jeopardy [from Old French jeu parti, literally: divided game, hence uncertain issue, from jeu game, from Latin jocus joke, game + partir to divide, from Latin partīrī] Mysterious as it may sound, Jeopardy! is actually one of the most popular TV Game Shows ever. It has been aired in the United States almost continuously since 1964. We adapted the rules of the game to include

these five categories: Physics, Math, Bio-Chemistry, English and Sports. All students in Grade 10A, B and C were invited to form teams of six and compete by being the first team to answer a question correctly from the given categories. Though each team had the chance to win a point, their score was also in jeopardy – An incorrect answer would cause the point value to be subtracted from the team’s total score. Therefore this game is extremely volatile in that like gambling, scores can fall just as easily as they can rise. As a note, I am grateful to Mr. Mustafa for attending the competition for without him, the cheering and moshing by the audience would have almost at times become a little out of hand. At the end of the first round, Team 1(10B) led with a score of 90 followed by Team 3 (10C) with 80. In third place was Team 2(10A) with -20, followed by Team 4(10c) -110, Team 5(10A) -110 and Team 6(10C) -200. Seasoned competitors such as Uddom Pen, Vann Lydeth, and Chett from Team 1 seemed virtually unstoppable at halftime but anyone who thought this team had it, “in the bag,” would soon be greatly disappointed. In the second round Team 2, led by Tynal,

16 January 2011 Zaman International School - High School Newspaper

slaughtered the Physics questions, upsetting Team 1’s comfortable lead. Also Team 3 showed resilience in the Sports Category and threatened to close the distance. But at the end of the day, when order was restored and the smoke cleared, it was Team 2 left standing with a combined score of 521 in a huge comeback victory! Team 1 got second with 250 and Team 3 got a close third with 220. Team 5 got 50 and Team 4 got -50. Though Team 6 finished with -400, their keen sportsmanship gained our respect with the certainty that the game would not have been as enjoyable without them. On a final note one could say that the first ever Zaman Jeopardy! was a victory, for the last question which was posed by Osman Karaca asked, “In what year did Zaman International School first open in Cambodia?” every student in the room answered correctly that it was 1997. So in this spirit of seeing where we are today and how far we’ve come, I wish to thank the parents, Zaman and the Great Country of Cambodia. Also I would like to thank Kasim who without his help the competition would not have occurred. Congratulations Team 2 and may we all continue to support one another towards Victory just as you have done today! JASON MATTHEW BEASLEY

We Are 10b

It

was a chilly winter dawn when 21 students from 10B were gathered up at school for their trip to Shihanouk Ville at around 5:00am. For about 5:30am, we’re all took up our bags in the car and start our trip. It took us about 5 hours to get to the destination. During the journey, we played and played and played then we slept Zz... Some guys were taking photos while we were sleeping. Voilà, we arrived at the Golden Sand hotel. We took our bags from the lorry and put them in our ROOM. Then, off we went to O-chheurteal Sea. After setting up the barbecue stuffs, we started grilling the chickens and we ate and ate and ate until our stomachs were stuffed. Soon after that, we changed our clothes and rushed to the sea. We swam in the sea for a long time, we made sand mountains and then we went to SPLASH.

We played there for about 30 minutes until we ran out of energy. So, we went back to the hotel, took a shower, and played games for 15 minutes then we ran back to the beach again. We decided to have barbecue again and we all cooked the food together and had fun during the cooking. Some of us bought the fireworks and launched the firework towards the sea and sky. Meanwhile, half of the barbecued foods were eaten by some of our friends. After eating the overcooked barbecued chickens, we walked along the shore and took some photos also. At about 8:00pm, we went back to the hotel. Even though, all of us were really exhausted but we still had so much energy to play games, SUMO battle, and swim in the pool. Then we slept and woke up.The next day came when some of us were still lying on the bed and floor.

We took shower and went for breakfast. After that, we went to Sokha Beach. Soon,we knew that we had no food to eat and we split up into two groups. One group was relaxing at the beach and the others were buying food for eating. Later, the Buy-Food Group came back. Then, we started to clean the seafood (It’s really dirty). However, we continued to clean then we started to grill the SEAFOOD. Then, some ate the food while the others were cooking. After eating, we changed our clothes and went for a SPLASH at the sea. The sea was warm and we felt relaxed. 10mins later, we walked back to the volleyball field and we started playing. It was very exciting even my team lost. For some time, we set things back and went back to our hotels. Again, we played computer games and some swam in the swimming pool. We bought a lot of SNACKS and drinks to eat for dinner (like a party). Then we were so tired and stuffed so we slept and woke up tomorrow. 10B

spent wonderful 3 days in the dormitory. After study sessions we enjoyed dancing, watching a movie and playing games together. “Tea times” after every study sessions were very joyful. Preparing a cake together with our assistant teacher was an unforgettable experience. We learned amazing dances like “shemmame” and “Turkish halai”. While learning how to dance “shemmame” and other Turkish dances everybody would burst into laughter. We finished up with “marizon” which is a Khmer halai. It was a lifetime experience for us. We love dormitory! 8E

9a Birthdays We

have been waiting for a time to have our birthday parties. At last my homeroom teacher Mr.Halil decided to choose 26 November 2010 to celebrate our birthdays. Mr.Halil and our assistant teacher Mr.Mehmet prepared a nice surprise for us. When we entered to the canteen, we saw a huge birthday cake written our names on it. It was a nicer surprise for us to see our homeroom teacher when we were at grade 7, Mr. Mustafa Bagci who came from Vietnam to take part in our birthday party. It was great, we were all shocked. Then Mr.Halil gave us our presents written our names on them. It is so difficult to express with words what we felt at those moments. I just can say we were all very happy. After eating our cakes, Mr. Mustafa gave us some advice that we should study harder, respect our parents and love our country. Everyone was listening to him very carefully. And now we are trying to follow his advice. From this birthday party we got many useful messages for future life. Actully, we didn’t expect that we would have such a friendly atmosphere among our classmates. 26th November, 2010 was unforgettable day for us. We will always remem ber this day, because we were really impressed by this day. Borey Long 9A

A Pillow And a Blanket A l o n g t i m e a g o , a young, wealthy girl was getting ready for bed. She was saying her prayers when she heard a muffled crying coming through her window. A little frightened, she went over to the window and leaned out. Another girl, who seemed to be about her age and homeless, was standing in the alley by the rich girls house. Her heart went out to the homeless girl, for it was the dead of winter, and the girl had no blanket, only old newspapers someone had thrown out. The rich girl was suddenly struck with a brilliant idea. She called to the other girl and said, "You there, come to my front door, please." The homeless girl was so startled she could only manage to nod. As quick as her legs could take her, the young girl ran down the hall to her mothers closet, and picked out an old quilt and a beat up pillow. She had to walkslower down to the front door as to not trip over the quilt which was hanging down, but she made it eventually. Dropping both the articles, she opened the door. Standing there was the homeless girl, looking quite scared. The rich girl smiled warmly and handed both articles to the other girl. Her smile grew wider as she watched the true amazement and happiness alight upon the other girl's face. She went to bed incredibly satisfied. In mid-morning the next day a knock came to the door. The rich girl flew to the door hoping that

it was the other little girl there. She opened the large door and looked outside. It was the other little girl. Her face looked happy, and she smiled. "I suppose you want these back." The rich little girl opened her mouth to say that she could keep them when another idea popped into her head. "No, I want them back."

The homeless girl's face fell. This was obviously not the answer she had hoped for. She reluctantly laid down the beat up things, and turned to leave when the rich girl yelled, "Wait! Stay right there." She turned in time to see the rich girl running up the stairs and down a long corridor. Deciding whatever the rich little girl was doing wasn't worth waitingfor she started to turn around and walk away. As her foot hit the first step, she felt some-one tap her on the shoulder, turning she saw the rich little girl, thrusting a

new blanket and pillow at her. "Have these." she said quietly. These were her personal belonging made of silk and down feathers. As the two grew older they didn't see each other much, but they were never far from each other's minds. One day, the Rich girl, who was now a Rich woman got a telephone call from someone. A lawyer, saying that she was requested to see him. When she arrived at the office, he told her what had happened. Forty years ago, when she was nine years old, she had helped a little girl in need. That grew into a middle-class woman with a husband and two children. She had recently died and left something for her in her will. "Though," the lawyer said, "it's the most peculiar thing. She left you a pillow and a blanket."
