There are many types of competitions. Some competitions can take place at anytime and anywhere while others can only be in a specific place such as “Bingo” which was held at Zaman International School from the 29th of November to the 9th of December. Bingo/ 4-In-a Row competition is one of the new additions to the school. It tests and improved the players’ strategies and their cleverness. The game is not really difficult to play because what the players have to do is to take turns inserting the counters into the column. Whoever has the first 4 counters in a row wins the game. However, each student used different strategies to play this game, so it was not easy to be a winner, in our school’s case.

It was open to all the students from grades 7 to 12 and divided into 3 categories: The 3 top winners from these categories were rewarded. To become a winner in the Bingo competition, the student had to play 7 rounds and in each round, there were 3 matches, so if a student won 2 matches he/she could join the next round. Category “A” was for 11 Graders and 12 Grader s Category “B” was for 9 Graders and 10 Graders Category “C” was for 7 Graders and 8 Graders.

As a result, the students got eliminated from round to round. Finally, the top 4 students from each category competed against each other on stage in the conference hall. In that semi-final round, the students had to be really good, or they would be eliminated from the chance of becoming the winner.

Eventually, after the 6 tough rounds, the 2 winners advanced to the finals. For the 2 winners, one would have to go head to head with his/her competitor. In this round, the players had to be very careful with their steps because if they had taken one wrong step, they would have lost. After a never-ending challenge, one of them had to give up. And here is the result for the winners:

English General Knowledge Competition

A Challenge of The Minds

The

grade 7s had their first taste of competition a la High School style on 17th December. The competition was between 7A (boys) and 7E (girls). The boys’ team was represented by Chhounchhiv Chea, Sethy Pong Nara, David Lim and Kimsinawath Chou. The girls’ team was represented by Catherosette Meas, Pichvoda, Sokha Chen and Khunmanuth Buth. The respective classes were also present to give support to their friends. Mr Brett and Mr Muhtor were judges during the competition. The contest participants had to sit through almost 80 minutes of gruelling questions. Thus, as in all competition, the atmosphere was indeed tense. The questions were focused on English primarily and the knowledge and skills the students had acquired thus far on listening and reading. The questions ranged from simple True/False statements to more analytical ones which required a probing of minds through teamwork. The audience was not neglected during the course of the competition. Three questions were posed to them during the end of each section of the competition. This gave the contest participants a breather whilst engaging the audience as well. Three students, Eang Uy Eng (7A), Houy (7F) and Pich Raksa Hiv (7E) walked away with prizes. In addition to the three questions, two more were posed as the audience wanted a competition amongst themselves. This posed a dilemma as I had run out of prizes. I was pleasantly surprised by their suggestion as their actions revealed to me that they were not merely interested in prizes/presents as per se (though they would graciously receive it if there was one). Rather they wanted to be in the arena of competition and have their minds challenged and all that mattered to them was to be able to have the correct answer and by its own right emerge as a winner. But of course that their teacher (me) noted their point of gallantry! To me their noble thought tipped the scale versus the desire for points. I felt so very proud of my students. Well done fresh faced High School Zaman-nians! Your attitude will certainly take you up and far as you progress 4 December 2010 Zaman International School - High School Newspaper

through life. Just about this time, the bell rang and it was time for a break. Little were the students aware that fun hadn’t ended yet but was only beginning and a surprise was awaiting them. And the surprise was .......... A treat! What treat? I hear you ask. It was a bewildering one fitting the notion of the competition; a challenge to not only the mind but to the hands as well. A small sized Indian crafts man kept us enthralled for about 10 minutes with his craft creations using only coloured papers, his hands, his creativity mind and an occasional snip here and a snip there with his scissors and voila a beautiful coloured sword appeared. Next a chain of paper figurines and a beautiful rose flower. The students were amazed by the agility of his hands and the outcome of his paper creations. Oooohs, aaahhhhs and wows ensued every craft he materialized. At the end of the show, he sold his secrets and more which were contained in a little DIY craft book for a $1. Students and teachers alike bought them. Soon after the short fun intermission, the participants were up on the stage once again for round 3 – the final round. This time the questions were more challenging, requiring the students to read lengthy passages and answering probing questions within a short span of time. Within the next half hour, the competition ended and the winners were determined. 7E class won the challenge with a total score of 255 and the 7A class was close behind with 235 points. In closing, here are some quotes for you to ponder over. - Zig Ziglar It is not your aptitude, but your attitude, that determines your altitude. - Henry David Thoreau We were born to succeed, not to fail. - Special Olympics Motto Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt. Well, we tried to find out as none of us had ever experienced it before; we were very much excited. We went to the reception desk very quickly and with puzzled looks. They sent us into the station and we chose a lot of different models of guns. We could take any one of them depending on our pockets. We equipped ourselves with the guns and took uniforms and dressed as if we were soldiers. We formed two teams and started to shoot each other. At the first we decided to point our gun up and leave the field once you are shot. But later on we changed the rule and said we could play until we run out of bullet in the gun. Then, the game became more enjoyable. 10B December 2010 7 Zaman International School - High School Newspaper

We listened to music and talked on the way and reached there around 9 am.

We went for a walk around the zoo for a while. We saw a monkey, ostriches, rabbits and peacocks. Riding bicycle and rope sliding were some of the activities we had there.

Siem Reap visit was our dream. Fortunately it came true. We couldn`t sleep the night before the trip because of its excitement. Early in the morning we gathered at school and left for Siem Reap. We made our journey more enjoyable with funny stories and beautiful songs. Ruyalarim Olmasa was the most favourite one. We had our breakfast at the Skon district, on the way to Siem Reap. When we got there we took rest in our hotel rooms for about two hours and met at a local KFC for a late lunch. We hired a tour guide and he told us many important things about our great Khmer empire. We visited interesting places around Angkor Wat (Nagara). We got disappointed when we heard the news that the hot air balloon had already closed. We missed the beautiful sightseeing during the sunset. After roaming around Angkor city we headed to a BBQ buffet for dinner. When we turned back to the hotel rooms it was the only time we felt tired. We went to the swimming pool to relax. We jumped out immediately when we heard that there was a frog in the pool. Next morning we went to the Kulen Mountain. It took an hour to get there. We went to 1000 Linga, then went up the pagoda and prayed. We watched the big Buddha in awe.

massage. It was very tickling for the first timers. All of us screamed and laughed. Making all the people look at us was a bit embarrassing. When we arrived at Angkor Thom we learned that Hilary Clinton was also there but we couldn`t have a chance to take a picture with her. Our guide instructed us about ancient remnants and informed us about our great empire. We went to the top of the temple with Ta Prum, Angkor Thom and then “Terrain of the Elephant. We walked around and visited the Ta Prom temple. There was a peaceful air; we were walking under the shade of trees. After a five minute walk we visited The Precious Temple. In the Cultural Village we had a nice time. We went to shoot arrow after the first show. We spent around five hours in that village. I guess the most enjoyable show was King Chayvaraman 7. It was great! It was a show about our Great King. The last day we visited the war museum and looked at several land mines, old tanks and planes. We ended our tour with Angkor Museum.

Kulen Mountain was a wonderful choice for the sightseeing and waterfall nearby. Its relaxing surrounding and breezy air were really enchanting. After having lunch at that beautiful place we turned back to the hotel. After dinner we went to the night market and experienced fish

ducation is about more than just academic success. Beyond learning science, math, literature, students also develop their social skills at school. Even if certain manners are not directly taught in lessons and assessed in exams, in my opinion, they are much more important than academic subjects; such as self-confidence, respect for others, developing different points of view, successful interaction with everyone, etc. There are many factors that directly or indirectly affect the students’ success and one of them is parent–teacher relationship. Zaman International School stresses the importance of the parent- teacher meetings. All

parents from 7 grades to 12 grade visit respective homeroom teachers after the exam week. During the meetings following points on the next page are discussed and communicated:

Meetings are considered very useful in terms of parents and teachers. For instance, our new parents are informed about the school and their child’s performance in the class. Our parents understand the benefits of the weekend activities and give permission to join them. In addition, they are also satisfied with the discipline. Most of our parents believe in the success of Zaman. Since Khmer subjects are given in addition to the English subjects, the students have a chance to learn their own culture together with English medium subjects. Yasemin Tutumlu

It was a beautiful morning on 10th of Dec. Cambodia had a day off work. Zaman High School family members took the opportunity to relieve themselves of the hustle and bustle of daily life by going on a half day picnic to Son Soben Picnic Spot. After a short drive from High School, two buses and three minibuses arrived at the spot bringing happy members to enjoy themselves. Children immediately ran off towards the playing ground for kids. The women made themselves comfortable in the bamboo shacks which were built to rest above water around a small lake.

Zaman Fa Teenagers and some women set out to explore the area with a camera in hand while some male members started playing football, volleyball and Bingo (the latest trend in Zaman High School campus). After a while our chef, Mr. Selahaddin started fire for barbecuing chicken and the coals began to crackle under his expert hands. Alongside the chef, some male teachers including our Vice Principal Mr. El Rany

mily Picnic practiced their barbecuing skills. Soon the smell of barbecue filled the air. Meanwhile, our lovely receptionists and secretary were busy preparing salad. Our Principal, Mr. Osman Karaca and Vice Principal Mr.Mustafa Ercan along with some male teachers were enthusiastically playing football. They were running, kicking the ball and rejoicing with every scored goal. After sometime they switched to volleyball making the most of the warm sunshine.

Around this time food was ready. Every member, young and old, started queuing for the wonderful smelling barbecue chicken, rice with carrot accompanied by cool fizzy drinks and salad. After food, everybody went for a stroll around the lake and the children hurriedly ran back to the playing ground. Around midday all members occupied their seats in the buses and prepare themselves for the ride back home. Everyone enjoyed the outing and looking forward to another fun filled activity in the future.

It was a weepy day for us because one of our friend quit studying in our school and she is determined to study in the US. As 12F, we went to Soun Soben the same day. There were so many people as Nou, Vich, Panha, Sorida, Thyda, Daneth, Daly, Dany, Phea and Kolneath. While we were waiting for the teacher, she called to tell us to meet her at Lucky Supermarket. Luckily, we also wanted to buy some snacks and food so we could meet her there. On the way to Soun Soben, we sang songs, chitchatted, laughed, took photos, listened to music and enjoyed the view of the road.

Some houses had beautiful gardens, so they drew our attention. At last we reached the place, and took some food and lunch out. Then we walked in Soun Soben to find a place to sit and relax.

We saw some animals that was about to extinct. They weren't frightened when they saw us. In contrast, some of us were scared. There were a lot of free place for us to eat lunch and relax. We had to choose the

best place to explore; we went for the one with the river view. We ordered some food to eat. While, we were waiting for food, we sang lots of songs, especially our class's song 'SMILE.' It was a jolly day because

we remembered weird and funny memories. While were laughing, our homeroom Mrs. Vesile treated us to Turkish cake and delicious potato salad. We felt really hungry by that time so everybody

ate every quickly. We spent half an hour eating lunch and we played some games. The winners were Dany, Dali, Phea and Panha. We walked to the garden in Soun Soben and continued to play some games and took some funny photos. We played a lot of games such as putting an egg on spoon and walking, jumping by sacks, unfortunately we didn't have sacks, so we used plastic bags instead of sacks. It was hot and tiring so we stopped playing the game and we went back to Phnom Penh. KIMHEANG SAO

Strange name indeed. Hope my Turkish instructor forgives me for this. Then we cooked “sutlac,” I really have no clue what it means, just the beginning means milk and more like milk-lashes? Ha ha ha.... Some of us were best in eating. I don’t think I should name them but you may guess when you see the pics around this article. Finally started to play a game called “korebe,” my Turkish is really helpless here. I really don’t know what it means and no single instructor of Turkish has

A Day to Remember ! There we were, fifteen of us in one van, laughing and singing as we made our way to Kirirom. Unfortunately we couldn’t have the activity as a whole class because some of our friends couldn’t grant their parents’ permission. Two or three days before our departure it had been raining heavily, we were worried that it would rain at the top of the mountain. We couldn’t more wrong. The weather was perfect, we were so relieved. When we arrived and got out of our van, an unexpected thing happened. We were greeted by a monkey, literally. I guess it would be okay if the monkey stayed still but he didn’t. He was going nearer and nearer to our food which we had put at the entrance. None of us dared to get our food back but lucky for us a security guard was there and it is his job to prevent any kinds of theft, even if the thief was a monkey. After the ‘monkey’ incident, we went to find a hut to settle in. we could hear the water rushing along the stream and heard the

sound of the wind blowing through leaves from our hut. It was so relaxing. After that we decided to rent bikes. As soon as we found out there was only about four or five bikes, we stared to run and whoever got to the renting place first would get to rent the bikes. When I almost got there, I saw my friend who were there first running in every directions and screaming very loud. First, I didn’t know what happened, then I realized the same monkey who attempted to steal our food were swinging his arms and legs and screaming “hoo hoo hee hee haa haa”, it was as if he was running after them. I never knew my friends could run that fast, I guess being chase a monkey really pushed u to use your greatest speed. Eventually the monkey calmed down and so did we. We got really tired and decided to have lunch. We were really full by the end of the meal so we decided

to rest a bit before going around the resort and take pictures. We took many pictures, like everywhere. After we strolled around the resort, we had one thing left to do, rope sliding. When we reached the top of the building where we were supposed to slide down, some of us were really nervous, some of us a bit and some of us were not nervous at all. It was really exciting, we all wanted to do it again but there was not enough time. Finally we went to see some animals like rabbits, ostriches and of course monkey and then our van arrived. Fun couldn’t last forever. Thanks to our home room teacher, Mrs. Yasemine and our assistant teacher, We could experience this incredible day. I can’t wait to spend another weekend with 10E. It’s funny how we never got tired of each other when we spend more than 45 hours a week together. We are 10E, we are special but we are not perfect. We make mistakes but we learn from them. We are a bunch of educated girls but we still do know how to have fun. WE ARE US.
