The Essence of the Solidarity Festival

I

t has been a long tradition at Zaman to host an annual Solidarity Festival. We would like to expound on what this festival is and how it boosts the spirits of everybody involved. At the heart of the festival is the universally experienced desire to give to those in need. As the French writer and playwright Moliere put it so well "Every good act is charity. A man's true wealth hereafter is the good that he does in this world to his fellows." The workings of Solidarity Festival are simple. Money is raised; goods are bought and distributed to the less fortunate. But are there other benefits beside these? We absolutely believe there are. Firstly, this week brings together students and staff as equal partners with a common goal. A lot of logistical work is involved. Much, much more is involved than reaching into a wallet! Tons of food is moved during the week. It is heartwarming to see all the enthusiasm for a good purpose that is exhibited by everyone

involved. Secondly, the participants get to meet the recipients of the charity by going in person to many hospitals and orphanages. This puts a human face to

the people that have a much more difficult situation to deal with than us. Those involved are able to feel the gratitude and how much people appreciate this

massive effort. People are naturally compassionate but are made more so by the experience of meeting those who genuinely deserve help,

12-E Last Maklube we were talking and laughing in the living room when Sothaneth, Malin and Maliny also arrived. As we were sitting in the living room and waiting for our friends to come, they finally arrived. We all said hello to Sathya, Monita, Seyma, Cathemiel, Seyla and our assistant teacher. By the time they arrived it was time for us to start cooking. Firstly, the teacher wanted us to divide into groups to make salads, fry potatoes and carrots, and set up dishes. We got into groups, some starting to work and other groups waiting their turn and watching a video in the living room. While some of our friends were frying potatoes and carrots we took many photos and made fun of our friends. At that time one of our friends, (Pov), On Thursday the 10th of December it was HUMAN RIGHTS day so we got permission from our assistant teacher Ms.Azize to go to the dormitory for the Turkish dish maklube. Anyone who wanted to go could give their name to Malin (our class monitor). Then we could get a permission paper for our parents to sign on Tuesday. After getting the paper we agreed that we were going to meet each other at school at 9 am, but students who already

knew the dormitory`s location could go there directly at 8:30. Thursday was coming very fast. Vimean and I decided to go directly to the dormitory. We thought that we would be the first at the dormitory but unfortunately we were not, because when we arrived we saw Monirath was standing in front of the dormitory waiting for someone to open the door for her. After saying hello we went inside together. Once inside the dormitory we sat and waited for our teacher to come

down to welcome us. After waiting for awhile we saw our teacher coming down and she greeted us very warmly. It was almost 9 so the teacher asked us to have breakfast with the other girls who were staying at the dormitory before she went to school to pick up our friends. Then the teacher asked us go to the kitchen to have breakfast and we ate bread, fried eggs and sausage. While we were eating Aryza arrived too. After we finished our breakfast

called us and asked for the dormitory`s location so we went outside to wait for her. After a short while she arrived at the dormitory at last. After opening the door for Pov, Bopha and I went to the kitchen to make the salads. But before that happened our teacher called us to gather around the table to make the Maklube all together and all of us watched how it was made and helped to pass all the ingredients our teacher needed. While putting the fried potatoes

into the pot we ate a lot of them but the teacher never found out. Then we put in the onions, potatoes, carrots, the beef, salt, pepper and rice until the pot was almost full. We told our teacher that it wasn`t enough for us to eat, so our teacher put in some more rice for us. After we finished adding everything we filled the pot up with hot water and boiled it for 30 minutes. While waiting for the Muklube to finish cooking Sothaneth was washing the lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber. We played in the living room for awhile then went to have some fruit in the kitchen. Then the group who had to make the salads came and cut the lettuce in small pieces. Then we also chopped the tomatoes,

teacher asked us to walk upstairs to see the dormitory bedrooms. First we went into our teacher’s room, then we went to see our bedroom. It was such a huge room it could sleep eight students. We went to see the other rooms and the upstairs floor. After that we went back downstairs. Then it was ice cream time and our teacher brought in two big cartons of chocolate ice cream. All of us ate ice cream except Sothaneth who didn`t eat any because she was really full. So we couldn`t finish the ice cream. While we were enjoying our time there we didn't realize how fast the time was passing. Now it was cucumbers and purple cabbage time for everybody to say good bye to our teacher and each into small pieces. Finally our Maklube had cooked so we put the pot upside down on a big tray and put all the colorful sliced vegetables around it. We brought the Maklube out to the living room and put it on a nice cushion that my friends had already placed there. We took pictures before getting started. We sat around and stared at our delicious food. We ate happily but while we were eating we had to add some more salt and lemon juice. Near the end we were very full but we still had to eat it all up because we had asked our teacher to put in some more rice. In the end we still couldn't finish it so we decided to throw it away. After relaxing for awhile our

other. Vimean and I went home first before our friends went back to school. Then I said goodbye to my teacher and all my friends as well. In the end we all would like to say thanks you so much to our assistant teacher for preparing Maklube for us and also the Ice cream , We know that the Ice cream are cool and sweet but for sure our teacher’s heart is event sweeter than the Ice cream. Thanks you teacher for such as a wonderful lunch. We all of 12 ‘E’ love you very much. =.= By:Vimean Chea and Bopha Vimean Chea From:12E

A Happy Time For Us On Saturday, the 17th of October the students from 11F went to their homeroom teacher’s house (Miss Vesile) to cook the Turkish dish called maklube for lunch. On that day, there were only 6 students that went. There were Heang, Ranou, Rachana, Sorida, Thyda and Sophea. At 8:15 am 5 of us were in the waiting room of Zaman International School and we all waited for Sophea. She was a little bit late because of a traffic jam. When everybody was there, we prepared to get ready to go. We left the school around 8:45am by Sophea’s car and Ranou’s motorbike. Firstly, when we reached Miss Vesile’s house, she said welcome to all of us and gave us some chocolate to eat. Then our assistant teacher, Miss Aziza, told us to come with her to look at the dormitory rooms. We went upstairs with her. She as showed us where we could sleep and study when we were visiting the dormitory. Everybody entered the dormitory bedrooms; we ran to beds and slept for a while. Everyone had chosen their own beds and some of us said that this bed or that bed would be theirs. After all the beds were assigned we went downstairs. S e c o n d l y, o u r h o m e r o o m teacher, Miss Vesile, called us to help her with the cooking. But first we had to divide into 2 groups. In the first group, Sorida, Thyda, Ranou and me had to cut

some vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and eggplants. Then the second group, Rachana and Sophea, had to fry all of those vegetables. After that our teacher, Miss Vesile, told us to cut cucumbers and tomatoes. As for the cabbage and lettuce, Sorida had to chop them. While Rachana and Sophea were frying, our teacher asked us to go to the living room and we played the game called “Reav Bong Kong” with her. In this game, we all cheated. We wanted to catch our teacher, but we didn’t succeed. We got tired, but we had lots of fun with this

forgot that it was hot, so our tongues got burned. But we still ate quickly and drank a delicious drink called Tang. 10 minutes later, our stomaches were full. Then some of us started to wash the dishes in the kitchen, but Sophea and I were in the living room. We played with the pillows. We took all the pillows off of the sofa and used them to hit each other. After 2 minutes, we picked up all the pillows and put them in their proper place. At 1:15pm we left our homeroom teacher’s house and we got back to school at 1:30pm. It was a little bit late and some of our friend’s parents were already waiting for us outside the school. Lastly, we all would like to say thanks to our homeroom teacher, Miss Vesile, and our assistant teacher, Miss Aziza for cooking such a very nice lunch for us. We hope that we’ll have another great time like this one again soon.

game. After this game, our teacher put the pot upside down on the tray and then she started to put the salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and cabbage in a circle around the tray showing off the lovely colors. After a few minutes, our food had already cooked so our teacher brought it to the living room. Before we started, we took many photos with our friends, teachers and the food around us. While we were taking photos, we could hear the sound “Krouk Krouk” from everybody’s stomach. We were Name: Kimheang Sao really hungry so we put the food Class: 11F into our mouths quickly. Give a hand to

T

he new year is coming. We are saying good bye to 2009, with our good and bad memories in our minds. We are thinking of New Year’s resolutions and planning what to do while welcoming another year of great expectations and surprises. As you know, each year ZIS is getting more and more famous fo r i t s o pt i m u m te a c h i n g quality, noteworthy education system and enjoyable and informative activities. T h at i s w hy, I t h i n k t h e students at Zaman International School are very lucky and advantageous. Apart from studying in clean, purposemade and cool classrooms, they are educated by experienced and dedicated teachers. What I would like to cover in this article is the extracurricular activities in which the pupils may get the experience in life, get sociable and become more fluent in English. The ZIS pupils have been indulging in these kinds of festivals and activities since the beginning of the a c a d e m i c y e a r. F o o t b a l l matches, in-class tennis tournaments, swimming facilities, shopping at the weekends, birthday parties, computer mania days, fun at Water Park , extra lessons can be given as examples. Although all of them are noteworthy and beneficial for the students, I would like to elaborate on the Solidarity Festival. Each and every teacher of ZIS i s a w a r e o f t h e fa c t t h a t “virtues bring solidarity and m u t u a l a s s i sta n c e m e a n s helping each other”. We study not only study the values in the classroom but we perform them by carrying out a campaigns to help the poor, the orphan and the needy. As ZIS organized a Solidarity Festival last year, the students

were familiar with the event. When the teachers brought this issue up in the classrooms, the students started to sing “ H e a l t h e Wo r l d ” b y t h e deceased Michael Jackson. The assistant teachers made some donation boxes and decorated t h e m v e r y b e a u t i f u l l y. However, the boxes were empty. Next was the students’ turn. They gave away their allowances by sacrificing from their snacks and drinks. The school informed the parents of this campaign and some joined with $100 while some donated around $ 10. Day by day, the boxes were getting full and heavy as the students chipped in with more money. It was such a good willed competition. Was that all ? No, they came up with different ideas. The school administration gave green light to food festival. Two grades were given one day on which they would sell home-made cookies, cakes, desserts or purchased drinks, snacks and fruits. The students prepared posters, the parents cookies, the teachers tables. There was such an increasing participation each day. You would see the students trying to sell what they had in their trays. For whom? For those who are not as lucky as them and need food, money and shelter. The donation boxes were counted by a council of teachers and parents and the amount was impressive: $ 5.700. This amount of money was collected from primary school students in a short time. The students put such praiseworthy efforts into this festival as they proved the fact that “If you are at peace, then there is some peace in the world.” These students will not see or meet the people who

will receive this donation, but they are sure that it will bring happiness and smile to the faces of the recipients. That is called generosity, sacrifice, altruism, heroism, sincerity, the perfection in human soul. My special thanks go to the administration for giving us this opportunity, the altruistic teachers who do their best and motivate the students perfectly and the students who take part in the activities with all their hearts and souls . Yo u w i l l b e re a d i n g t h e reflections about the Solidarity Festival from 3 classes. In the middles pages are the writings upon the class activities which

range from film viewing to field trips. Last page is special for you, dear readers. There is Q& A corner on which you see the questions whose answers are in the articles in Primary School pages of the newspaper. Find the right answers , cut this part and put it in the box at the reception area. Good luck to you! Well, lastly, let me congratulate 5-C students on becoming the champion in the football tournament held among grade 4 and 5 classes. Happy New Year to all of you! Editor

he name of the festival is n o t “s o l i d a r i t y ” fo r kindergartners, we simply say “Helping ”…it is much easier to understand for our little ones….Although we could not get involved in the Solidarity Festival as much as primary did, it was an exciting two-week time for us. We were watching the slides of the previous solidarity festival almost every day during the festival. Kids are really eager to prepare boxes to help the poor. They are looking forward to do

it next year..And also we used to have a small ceremony of putting money into the donation box during the circle times….It was fun … Moreover, we had a food festival that parents were involved, too. Our kids could not figure it out completely but they enjoyed the food… I want to thank our parents who helped us for solidarity once again… Prepared by: K2-B

Computer Mania Day!

A

ll work and no play makes Juan a dull boy”. This saying goes true to small kids. They tend to be very active when it comes to burning out their energy. On November 21, 2009, some of my 1-A students joined the “Computer Mania Day. It’s a day for Computer games. It was joined by 10 students who had a great time playing educational games such as online coloring pages and even interactive games such as plant

and zombies and a lot more which I found it difficult to play. But good for them, they seemed to be very exposed to technologies. The activity started at 10:00 and ended at 12:00. It was a happy day for them. They really enjoyed the activity. They wanted to stay longer but when 12:00 struck, it’s already time for them to go home. They wished to join the same activity again soon. Prepared by: 1-A

Dressed up for KFC Day

R

egular lunch during weekends is always spent with family at home or at a restaurant or along the beach or somewhere relaxing. For the first time, some 1-A students spent a weekend lunch with their friends and teachers at KFC City Mall. Everybody was so excited. Some of them even came to school earlier than the scheduled time. They were all dressed up for lunch.

At 10:30 we prepared to leave school. We reached KFC City Mall within a short time. Some tables were reserved for us. Each student seated comfortably while waiting for the luscious meal. At 11:20, we all enjoyed our simple lunch. After the meal, we posed for some pictures and waited for the bus. Everybody had a great time being out with friends and teachers. We left KFC at 11:45. They brought along a KFC plate which was a memorabilia of that happy day! Prepared By:1-A

The Game Zone

M

y 2-B students were very happy when I announced to them last December 11 that on Saturday December 12 we would be having a fun activity at Sovanna’s Carnival Land where we can play Arcade games. First let me define what Arcade game is. An Arcade game is a coin – operated entertainment machine, typically installed in business such as restaurant, public houses, video arcades, and Family Entertainment Centers. First popular "arcade games" were early amusement park midway games such as shooting galleries and ball toss games. At the Game Zone, we started our day having snacks of burgers and potato fries at BBWorld, to prepare ourselves to the next level of energy releasing activity. Then we

settled ourselves and went to the Carnival land, first we bought the tickets and tokens then there the kids went and chose their own arcade game machine to play with. Even I a n d my a s s i sta nt te a c h e r played with our students. We played basketball shooting, football and many more. It was really fun, we were really engrossed by the games and almost forgot to go home, so I told them we needed to go as the school bus was waiting, and one of them said “No, teacher. Just call my dad and tell him to pick me up over here. The kids really liked the activity and suggested having this activity one more time. This activity, Arcade games, really released our stress and at the same time gave us and our students the chance to play with each other in a very comfortable and relaxing zone. It was really indeed a fun day. Prepared By: 2-B

SOLIDARITY FESTIVAL

A big family

S

olidarity Festival awakened all of us to our responsibilities for humanity. It has brought many positive outcomes. All-important outcome of Solidarity Festival was, without doubt, to give a helping hand to poor and weak one. Moreover, Solidarity Festival affected a change in the way that we think about people around us; the sense of togetherness rose, we, as all teachers, students, and parents united for this important festival. All of our pathes crossed through the senses of love and affection. Besides the sheer bliss provided by Solidarity Festival, a tt i t u d e s o f my st u d e n t s towards this event were unforgettable. Although they are only 6, thinking about the poor people touched their hearts. After teacher Sivoeun made a donation box for our

class, the idea of helping others gained concrete dimension in my students’ minds. Everyday, no matter how small, they tried to put some money in our box. I knew that the money they put was their pocket money, and this was the point that made the solidarity festival more important and special. I also appreciated my parents’ deep sincerity for this e v e n t . 7 o f my s t u d e n t s ’ parents came and helped us selling food. It was not an easy work, but, in the end everything ran smoothly and we throughly enjoyed the fruits of the Solidarity festival. The fruit was the sense of relief attained through the cooperation and togetherness. Participation of parents added a new dimension to the Solidarity Festival. Yes! It made us a big family… Thank you all! Prepared by :1-B

t the end of November, we had a solidarity festival. It was nice and enjoyable. Every class in our school wanted to donate the most amount of money because this money would all go to poor people to buy some materials to give them, to the hospitals and orphanages. As for my class, 4B, we donated some money ourselves. My f r i e n d S re y p i c h ' s fa m i l y donated $100! Wow! That was a big amount of money. For me, I d o n ate d $ 2 0 . We ke pt donating in our 4B donation box. We kept donating and donating until the box was full! S o o u r a s s i sta nt te a c h e r, Teacher Sophal, had to make another donation box which was much bigger than the old one. This year we donated more than last year because we h a d a fo o d fe st i va l at

school. In food festival, we sold many kinds of food like Khmer food and desserts, Turkish food and desserts, snacks, cakes, candies, jellies etc. For my teacher, Teacher Zehra, she sold Turkish dessert made by h e rs e l f. I a n d my f r i e n d s K i m p o r, K o m a , Va t a n a k , Sreypich, Rithya, Liza and Nita helped our teacher sell the food. I helped my teacher as much as I could. At the end of t h e d a y, w e s o l d a l m o s t everything! Only some jellies and candies were left. I was very happy and we thanked Mr Semih who often bought our food more than anyone else. I had one of the happiest and the most enjoyable days of my life. It was more enjoyable than last year. Prepared by: Lucklita THENG-4B

tudents were exposed on many different kinds of stories; fiction and nonfiction books. They love reading which are written and published by many famous writers and publishers but what about those who were unknown and unpublished? The class studied about FABLE. It was a busy morning with the students in which we had a

creative writing activity about how to write a fable on their own. 3-A students were so uneasy about it. They were so worried that they did not know how and what kind of story they would write. Most of them patterned some ideas based on what stories they had read. And there were some who really used their imaginations for the story. One of the

best fables written was about the rabbit and the snail. “The Rabbit and the Snail” By: Malysa Veng One day a Rabbit went down a lake and saw a snail and the snail said, “Hey why are you drinking my water?” “Well, are you sure this is your lake Mr. Snail?” The Rabbit said. “Yes, I am sure,” said the snail. “So you need to beat me in a race,”

About 11h00 am, the food was already cooked, so we set the table and had lunch together on the beautiful green grass with fresh air and happy faces. Time seemed very short for us. Only one hour later, we finished lunch.

Everyone helped to prepare the materials we brought and take them back to the school bus. Lastly, we took some photos with the teachers and the students. At 12h30 pm, we left Soun Soben. Everyone was very happy and we really wanted to spend more time there. However, that was the time we had to come back. We had a great time there. We hope to have some kinds of these activities again for the next quarter. Prepared by: 3-C

The 4D Experience All aboard! Put on your glasses and enjoy! On Saturday morning, November 14, 2009, the 4C class went to Sorya to see t h e s e groundbreaking 3D films with spectacular in- theater effects and t h e a t e r environment including leg

ticklers, exchanged lighting and seat buzzers to add the breaking fourth dimension. The kids were lucky enough to try it for two to three times that day and still want to go back for more. It is really one of a kind experience filled with excitement, stunning visuals and unexpected sensory surprise. Prepared by :3-C

The Happy Celebrants! Smiling faces, glinting candles, delicious cakes and some other things marked this special occasion on the fifth of December. Five students from 5-B celebrated their birthdays together. Everyone was glad they were part of this happy day. They ate cakes and some other delicious foods. The celebrants were Pheanusa, the most quiet but good boy in the class, Soyean, the smart and

pretty one, Saophea, the quiet and nice girl in the group, Theany, the playful yet clever one, and Panha, the most generous one among the boys. They were happy to receive gifts from their teacher and friends. Happy Birthday! More candles to blow. Prepared by: 5-B

A remarkable day! On the 16th of N o v e m b e r , M o n d a y, m a r k e d the start of giving and sharing. The 5B class indeed started to let their donation box take its role. Every faces show compassion and responsibility. At such young ages, it has been amazing to know and see how capable they are of sharing what they have. Every single

cent represents piece of love from the heart. That one boy stood and spoke up if he could give more than a dollar in the box was quite an impressive and adorable thing to do, so that day was just the prelude to the big event, The Solidarity Festival. It was indeed a pleasant and lasting experience to everyone. More Power to all may we always let compassion reigns in our heart and mind. Prepared by :5-B

It was dated December 12, 2009 when other ways of spelling questions were asked. Well, a soldier, unarmed, who dares go to a battle would s u r e l y d i e . Rosa Nhim Khemara, Uy Eang, David Lim, Sreypech Nay, Aymey Lim and Roza Kim Taing were the spelling stars. After the spelling contest, we had film viewing which was frightening. Sadly though, we hadn’t had enough time to finish the film due to time c o n s t ra i n . We ’re l o o k i n g forward to the real match then since of course, who knows, I might win. ACTIVITIES

Unforgettable Memories of 12-E at first time donation together On the 2nd of December during our PE lesson all the students from 12E class went to the National Children's hospital to donate basic needs to all the patients that really need charity. We took 170 boxes from our school to the hospital. We went to the hospital in two school buses along with 3 teachers. They were our homeroom teacher Ms. Vesile, our assistant teacher, Ms. Azize and Mrs. Gosksel, our PE teacher. We had so much fun on the way there. We sang songs and talked with our teachers. We arrived there at 10:15. We went to 3 different buildings, each of us with one box in our hands. First, we went to the ICU building and we saw a lot of patients with different diseases. They looked so poor and they really needed help from us. We gave one box to every patient. They were very excited to get them from us. After that we went to the next building, which is for general patients. All the Staff were very grateful for the donations. Next, we went to the building where HIV patients stay. They looked so thin and we all felt pity for them. We really wanted to help them because they need to have a chance to live like us. We saw a baby whose parents left him alone and won't accept responsibility for him. They just left him for the staff

in the hospital to take care of him. He was so thin and he cried all the time. We really wanted to help him because he was so lonely and he had such an unusual appearance. After we had given all the stuff to the patients we felt very happy and we went back to our bus then we got a ride back to school. On the

way back we went to the Neak Poan restaurant. We bought sugarcane juice for our teacher and all the other students. We enjoyed it very much. We left the restaurant and went back to school. We arrived at school at 12:00 then we went to have lunch. Finally, I would like to say that we

really enjoyed this solidarity trip. We were so honored to donate all that stuff to poor people. As we are Cambodian we really have to help the Cambodian people that need charity. And we are all grateful to our school's director who arranged this kind of festival.

FIELD TRIP

The Story of a Blind Girl There was a blind girl who hated herself just because she’s blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She said that if she could only see the world, she would marry her boyfriend. One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her and then she could see everything, including her boyfriend. Her boyfriend asked her, ? Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?? The girl was shocked when she saw that her boyfriend was blind, and refused to marry him. Her boyfriend walked away in tears, and later wrote a letter to her saying. ? Just take care of my eyes, dear.? This is how a human brain changes when its status changes. Only few remember what life was like before, and who’s always been there beside us even in the most painful situations. Life is A Gift. Today, before you think of saying an unkind word – Think of someone who can’t speak. Before you complain about the taste of your food – Think of someone who has nothing to eat. Before you complain about your husband or wife – Think of someone who’s crying out for a companion. Today, before you complain about life – Think of someone who went too early to heaven/hell.

Before you complain about your children – Think of someone who desires children but are barren. Before you argue about your dirty house, that someone didn’t clean or sweep – Think of the people who are living in the streets. Before whining about the distance you drive – Think of

someone who walks the same distance with their feet. And when you are tired and complain about your job – Think of the unemployed, the disabled and those who wish they had your job. But before you think of pointing the finger of condemnation at one another – Remember that

not one of us is without sin and we all answer to one maker. And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down – Put a smile on your face and give thanks — you’re alive and still around Life is a gift – Live it, Enjoy it, Celebrate it, And Fulfill it.

Human Rights Day

It was during the Human Rights Day holiday on the 10th of December that 12F had a significant trip to Soun Soben. The trip included a visit to Zaman

Univ ersit y . W e left scho ol at 1 0 a m and trav eled to our first goal, Zaman University, which is located in Toul Kok near the Zaman primary school. As we arrived, a

beautiful, tall, stylish building stood in front of us. We went to look inside; some parts inside the building was still under construction. After we left there, we continued our trip to Soun Soben. It took as around 20 minutes to get from Zaman University to Soun Soben. After we arrived everybody helped each other to carry the stuff and we found a place to sit. We had a very yummy BBQ for our lunch. We chatted; we laughed and enjoyed the BBQ a lot. After we finished our BBQ and prepared

our stuff we all wandered around the garden with our teachers and took a lot of photos. It was really fun, actually. But soon it was time for us to leave. We arrived back at our school at 2 o’clock. For this unforgettable trip we would like to thank Mrs. Yasemin for letting us have a great trip together and we would like to mention how much we appreciate Ms. Meve Abla for taking such good care of us. Thank you! By:12F
