ZAMAN has a great reputation in terms of organizing new activities for its students. This time ZAMAN came up with Summer Festival which was held for the first time last year. Last year it concerned only girls’ side but this time, as a result of great demand, it was organized for

boys as well. This type of activities are held in an effort to enable students to have a great time, boost their motivation, support their adaptation to school, encourage them to learn new skills, and create close interaction between parents and teachers. We are happy to

announce that this festival served the expected purpose. The festival was organized in accordance with the students’ selection of games and activities. The attendance was great, there were 317 students with the same festival t-shirts. Continued on Page 2

GENERAL

Continued from Page 1 The festival started at 08:00 with selling tickets. With snacks, drinks, desserts, various games, and with lucky draw the festival was totally awesome. There were 15 different games such as: Tug of war (between classes),Penalty kicks, Basketball shots, Carrying eggs, Intelligence games, Computer games, Balloon breaking contest, Burger eating contest, Sack hop race, Apple eating

contest, Dancing on paper, Ring toss, Dizzy kicks, Egg catching, and Egg carrying. Along with the games there were songs sung by s t u d e n t s i n 3 d i ff e r e n t l a nguages, Khmer, English, and Turkish. While they were singing, other students gathered up around the stage to cheer them up by waving their hands in the air and taking shots. The most anticipated part of the festival, without doubt, was the time of lucky draw.

There were 15 different presents in it. The biggest ones were 2 bicycles. The lucky ones to win those bikes were Davin from 8 C and Mr. Murat Tutumlu, vice principal. The parents that we interviewed during the festival expressed their deepest appreciations for such social activities. They all agreed on one point that ZAMAN is not only unparalleled in terms of education but also in social

activities. The festival lasted for 4 hours and ended at 12:00. Having e x p e r i e n c e d a l l t h i s s t u ff , students are looking forward to the next 2010 Summer Festival. We want to thank school administration, teachers, and all students for their contribution and attendance. Hope to see you next year with the same spirit.

ACTIVITIES

K 2-B Pre-valentine’s Celebration

The name of the activity sounds a bit strange…What's relation between kindergarten and valentine? You may ask that question when you see the title but we think there is a strong relation between them. Valentine Day is about love, right? If I ask you what the biggest love in the world is…your answer will probably be :the love between a mother and her child or a father and his child…Only mothers and fathers love their children without waiting anything in return. If your friends or others love you, at least they expect that you love them too or help them etc. but parents love their kids just because they are their children……So if we talk about "love", first we should mention that love…As you see they are really related. Zaman Kindergarten classes decided to celebrate Valentine Day on Feb,13. That's why we say pre-valentine...K2b class started to prepare this celebration one week before its date. First we learnt a very short poem to read for parents on that day .This is the poem:"Mummy

February 14 marks the day for us to celebrate the Valentines Day to show our love and appreciation for those persons who are dear to us. That is why the K1A students of Zaman International School also celebrated this special event a day early to let their parents know how they loved them and express their gratitude towards their diligent and loving moms and dads. First, we invited their parents to come over last February 13, Friday afternoon to watch a small presentation before picking-up their kids from the school. Of course, the students already prepared presents and a surprise number to their parents through the Valentines Card that the kids themselves prepared. In addition, a song rendition has been presented as well in front of the overwhelmed parents as a gesture of saying "I love you Mom and Dad" to seal the event.

and Daddy I remember you a lot, it brings the tears of love in my eyes, Mummy and Daddy I love you a lot." Then we made lovely cards and wrote that poem in the cards, Mr. Zulfi agreed to buy red roses so luckily we could give one rose for each mother… Most of the parents of K2b joined the celebration because they understood how important it was for their kids. Thanks them for

their understanding…We started by reading our poem. After that our students gave their cards to the parents. The parents were very happy when they saw their kids reading a poem and the cards. When these touching moments ended the girls sang the nursery rhyme:"Twinkle Twinkle. When the boys saw girls singing, they wanted to sing too and they sang:"Humpty

Dumpty". The last one was "Bingo", they sang it all together..After we presented those songs for the parents, our student gave beautiful roses to their mothers. We thought that the sentimentality was enough. A little time left to have some fun so we started to play "Musical chair". The kids and their parents competed together as pairs. The kids enjoyed the game a lot. May be it was the first time they saw parents playing games at school. They all cheered to support their friends and parents….We all laughed a lot? It was one of the unforgettable days for K2B.We both had an opportunity to show our love to our families and enjoyed the party a lot… Kindergarten years are special for one's life….. If it is Zaman Kindergarten, it is really special and more colorful with those kinds of activities..I would like to thank our parents again for their participation and expect to come together for more activities….. On February 16, Baramey and Techmeng of K1A class had celebrated their birthday. The celebration was held at Zaman International School in the canteen area at 2:00 in the afternoon. ACTIVITIES

Inter Class-academic Competition We held our first Grade 4 interclass academic competition on Saturday, 21st February 2009. It started at 9.30am and ended at 10.30am. Three students from each class were chosen to compete and had to answer a total of 30 questions. The questions covered the core subjects that were taught namely English, Math and Science. From each core subject, 10 questions were asked. I would say - the hour long quiz was the most intense activity that the Grade 4 students had ever experienced –both for the participants and the audience. The teachers and assistant teachers were on teeters as well. However it was not all stress all the time. Fun and laughter were injected in as well. Needless to say deep sighs were heard when a competing class could not answer the question correctly. After an hour long battle of wit and knowledge, the score was

finally disclosed and the students of 4C came through as the jubilant winners! The 4C class achieved a total score of 220 points whilst the 4A and 4B class had a tie of 190 points. Well done 4C!

Science Is Magic! Science Is Fun! discuss and make some ideas about the result. During that process, we were able to find the answers of the questions such as "How can a piece of tissue paper at the bottom of a jar remain dry although it is turned upside down in a big glass bowl full of water?" and "How doesn't the water in a glass closed with a very thin glossy card fall down although it is turned upside down?

As 3B class members we are all very interested in Science because we know that Science is one of the most important ways to explain and answer many questions about our mysterious world. Since our teacher is aware of the fact that we really like Science she suggested us to make some Science experiments together. Wow!!! That was a great idea!

At the end of our activity, we have perceived that all such kind of mysterious questions have reasonable answers and Science is the true guide for us to find the answers of these Making science experiments questions. together... Some of our friends were so eager and excited about this activity that they came to school much earlier than the expected time. Finally, it was time to start. We made the experiments one by one together. We were the little assistants of our teacher. After we were finished with the experiments it was time to

FIELD TRIP

Great Saturday For 1-a they went to Sovanna. Obviously, the third floor was the one that attracted the kids. They bought coupons and played many games there... Having spent more than one hour, they did not want to leave. Then, they entered a toy shop and a cd market and bought some staff for themselves. Despite their will, the day finished so quickly. When the students got on the bus, they felt very delighted and happy. They promised the teacher to study more and deserve the next fun activity.

s Zaman International School, we believe that rewarding the students’ success is very constructive in education especially for primary students. For this reason, we try to make the successful learners feel proud and special so we announce their names before the classmates, give them gifts or

arrange extracurricular activities for them. February, 14 was the day to reward the victorious students of grade 1/A. The teacher had organized an enjoyable day for Sophea , Sovatey, Uddom, Krishan and Rithysak. First they went to KFC and ate yummy foods. After they were all full up,

Our class teachers gave briefing about the animals we saw. We really learned a lot and passed a good time and came back to our school on 1:00pm. 13th February, 09 is another memorable day for us. On that day, all students of class 2A, 2B and 2C visited Tamao Zoo. We started from our school campus at 8:45am and reached the Tamao Mountain after about 45 minutes drive. We saw many animals there and heard their sounds in real. Tigers were big and very strong even inside the steel case. We were surprised

when we saw a group of monkeys following our car. Many monkeys were chattering around and were hanging with the branches and sometimes jumping from trees to trees. Some of us were little bit scared but we all had fun and played with the monkeys and deer. Our excitement became so high when we saw that elephant can dance with English and Khmer

Days at Dormitory

It was Sunday night I was preparing my bag to go to dormitory. It was very exciting for me. When school finished, me, Monyneath, Panha, Chana, Sonika, and Sivyougn went to the dormitory. Dormitory has 2 rooms for students and each room has 4 beds. When I went there the first thing I did was to help my teacher with dinner. At 6 o’clock we had dinner together with 3 other teachers. Once we finished eating, our teacher told us to study so we studied for an hour. Following study hour, our

teacher prepared tea for us. We enjoyed it very much. Chana, Sonika and Sivyougn were the first group to go home leaving 3 of us in dormitory. It was the first time for me to stay away from my family. The following day we woke up at 10 o’clock then we had breakfast as Monita, Dany and Rachana accompanied us during breakfast. Then my homeroom teacher entered the house with her 2 lovely daughters. She took us to ’’Park Way’’ where we played car racing, bowling and had lunch at KFC.

It was Friday and the weather was very good. I went to school as usual but when we went back to dormitory Chana, Sonika, Sivyougn and Rachana went there to sleep with us too. They had dinner with us and then we watched movie together. At 10:30 we had tea upstairs. We played and danced then we went to sleep. But when we were about to sleep, we heard some noise. We thought that it was a ghost sound. Me and Monyneath first thought that the sound was from washing machine but when we checked it was not working.

In the end, we found that it was the noise coming from air conditioner. I slept like a baby at dormitory and I am looking forward to staying there for a couple of days. Staying at dormitory provided us a unique chance to get to know each other deeper than ever. We did many things such as sleeping, eating, playing, dancing. We shared our happiness and sadness together. This was the best memory of my life that I will never forget.

Physics Club

Most people think that Physics is only for boys not for girls, as a matter of fact, boys might be suitable for Physics stuff than girls, but we're all here to prove that girls can do it much better. We'd really like to thank our Physics club teachers Mr. Gurkan Cil and Mr. Davut Aslan for giving us the opportunity to enter the world Physics and showing our abilities to others. We really do appreciate their attentions to us when they monitor us around, even though sometimes we didn't pay that much attention to them. So far we've learnt many useful tips for both our daily life uses

and studies. While we were working on our first project, the project was becoming better and better over time.

also an important reason that slowed our work. However, no matter what, we have to move on.

We are really sorry to disappoint you by not accomplishing 4 projects this year, but somehow we'll try our best to finish as much as we can. To be honest apart from positive things of Physics club, there were a few setbacks one of which was the temperature on Thursday in the Physics laboratory, it was really hot. This type of setbacks distracted most of our concentrations from taking our projects to the next level, which is

During our club hours, we have very close interaction with our teachers. They try to elaborate on issues that are way over our heads. To cut it short, we're having quite a good time trying new things, inventing new things by ourselves and getting to know our friends better, even though we hurt ourselves from time to time. ***

We also really enjoyed our unforgettable time at Parkway on 17th February 2009. This trip was organized by our teachers in an effort to reward us for completing our first project (Catapult) and our teachers took some photos for the photo contest at the bowling alley. After a little while of rest, we are about to start a new project, Water Rocket, which won the 1st place in 2006-2007 in Science Project Competition and was praised by all the science teachers at Zaman International School. ***

Infomatrix Club www.infomatrix.ro Do you recognize this website? It is a website that is made by an organization for the students all over the world to compete each other for IT categories in Bucharest, Romania. Due to this, ZIS has provided a club named as “Infomatrix club”, which was called as “Computer Project” last year. This is one of the best clubs in Zaman International School. School had sent students to join this competition 2 years ago which brought us back bronze medals. This year we planned again this program that hope to make better than last time. Mr. Bari ? I?i k is teaching and we have 7 members in computer laboratory. The organization divides the competition in 5 subcategories: Digital Content, Programming, Hardware Control, Computer Art and Photography (This category has just been updated ). For representing our school and country, we also joined this competition. We joined in the Digital Content Category. For this year, in Digital Content, they demand a topic which has

to contact the meaning with D & D. Our project is ‘ Dice & Devastate’ and our team name is C3 which means “ Cambodian Computer Club” . We applied our registration form to the organization above and uploaded the files by internet. The organization has chosen us as one of the finalists which were competed with other 11 countries’volunteers. As you can see our hard work,we have passed many phases. Now, we have to move on to the next phase which is the final phase for competition. We, as Infomatrix Club members, felt so excited that we have joined into final. These are our efforts during our club hours. Currently, we are planning to make a short video clip which is related about our topic “Dice & Devastate”. Moreover, we have already chosen the 2 persons that will go to Romania for the competition by testing each club member’s abilities. They have presented their topic to some of teachers which are in our school. Those 2 guys are Pen Kolneath & Song Sothy.Even not being able to go, we, as club members, still being friends and continuing our project till our last day. On 24th, April, they will depart from Phnom

FIELD TRIP

12-B Trip To Kompong Soum All of students in 12B initiated a trip to KOMPONG SOUM before the examination. In the early mornings, all of us came to meet each other at school. There were 11 students who joined this trip and two teachers (Mr. MUSTAFA and Mr. D AV U T H ) . W e l e f t f o r KOMPONG SOUM at 7 AM by bus. On the way, we played a lot of games in order to pass time and have fun. We organized song and anecdote telling competition. We also took pictures for memories as we will leave each other soon. Actually it takes 45 minutes to get to KOMPONG SPEU but it took us 1 hour to get there because of heavy traffic. Before reaching KOMPONG SPEU, we stopped and had breakfast. After finishing our breakfast, we continued our trip to KOMPONG SOUM. By the way, we stopped at PICH NIL to get a fresh air, watch natural water fall that flows down from the long PICH Nil mountain ranges. Then we prayed for our safe trip. We arrived at KOMPON SOUM at 11 and check-in at Golden Sand hotel. We relaxed at the hotel till 3 PM. After a while we were on the beach playing and doing all that stuff that we will never forget. The things that we did were swimming, playing football and making statues out of sand etc. The dinner time came very fast. Because of good weather we did a BBQ on the beach. For our dinner we had turkey meatball and chicken. When we finished our meals, we played firework together. That was the first time for us to do that on our own. We were very happy with our teachers. Unfortunately one of

us lost his wallet. We tried to find it for him, but we couldn’t. We went back to the hotel and had a deep sleep. We slept till we got a wake-up call from Mr. MUSTAFA at 8 o’clock. We left the hotel at 9 AM and bought breakfast at a restaurant near the market. It was a cheap restaurant with a lot of delicious food. We went to the beach again and rent a boat to ROSSRY Island. While we were rowing forward, we saw fishes swimming around us and it was wonderful to watch them. It took us 1 hour to get to that island. We arrived at the island at 12 AM. It was the first time for our class to be on that island. There were a lot of tourists that came from

many different countries of the world. We played soccer and volleyball with our teachers. Some students walked along the bank of the sea searching for shells and taking pictures. In a few hours we made a BBQ with some help from villager living in the island. Finally we went back to the hotel with exhaustion, but our two friends played a pun show to entertain us. When we arrived, we all had a chance to witness the sunset that we would never be able to see if it were not for that trip. Then, we took shower and had dinner. Time was running too fast, the morning came again. We get up at 8 o’clock and had breakfast at

restaurant in the hotel. Then we came back to Phnom Penh. All things considered, this trip was the most memorable, unpredictable, infatuating and fantastic experience we’ve never been through before. We have a lot of fun together. We will never forget these days. This trip wouldn’t have been as fun as it was without Mr. Mutafa Dur and Davut Aslan. Once again we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our teachers for letting us have that honor and privilege to be with them on that trip. Prepared By Chamnap and Phirin

Trip to Soun So Ben

Friday was coming… I’d been waiting for it for a long time because on that day we would go to Soun So Ben with my friends and my teachers. The trip started at 8:00. We went there by bus with 15 students, 2 teachers, 3 lovely children and a nanny. Around 8:30 we reached Soun So Ben. When we got off the car we were really surprised and excited with the nicest view we had never seen before. When we got to the gate, we got scared with a strange animal that looked

like a cow that we had never seen before. After that we saw many kinds of birds such as peacock, white peacock etc. It was very beautiful. Then we walked through that beautiful place to find an apporpriate spot to sit and cook BBQ. Mrs.Yasemin, Ms.Merve and some of us started to take photos. While I was cooking BBQ with my home room teachers Mrs.Yasemin and Ms.Merve, some of my friends were playing some games such as jumping rope etc… When we finished

cooking, all my friends stopped playing and started to wash their hands with cool ice. We were all starving to death. Then we started eating. We devoured everything in a matter of minutes. Wow… It was delicious.

On the way some of us fell asleep and some of us listened to music. We safely arrived at school at 2:30 .

ACTIVITIES

18th of February!!! On the 18th of February, 2009, 7 students from 12F stayed at Sevgi dormitory. The first 3 students who arrived there were Ravyka, Panha and Vattey riding in Ravyka's car. Mr. Osman guided their way to the dormitory. Then our friends keep arriving one by one Chornay, Sithyna, Molika and Jessica respectively. Mrs. Grace (our homeroom teacher) took our pictures when we first arrived at the dormitory with our bags. The first thing on our mind was to check our bedrooms. There are two large bedrooms with four beds and one air-conditioner in each room. We helped our teachers cook food for dinner and we started having dinner at 6:45pm. It was an enjoyable evening because the food was delicious and many teachers including Mrs. Grace,Ms Vesile and Ms. Serap and 4 supervisors joined us and also Monyneath who was staying with Ms.Vesile. After dinner we start to study immediately because our dinner started a bit late. Learning activity ended when tea time started around 9 o'clock. We ate some fruits such as water melon, apples, and oranges etc. Our home room teacher prepared chocolate cake for us and on the cake she wrote “12F Hos Geldiniz means welcome 12F. The cake and tea were very tasty. After tea time we danced and played with the supervisors, we had so much fun and were very tired because we played

and laughed too much. Later on we had some chats with the teachers then we went to bed. The next morning at 5:30am, Panha was the one who got up first and she took pictures of the other that were sleeping. We had shower and prepare ourselves for school then we had breakfast with Ms. Vesile other supervisor. Before we left dormitory Mr. Osman offered us a ride in his car but we refused because we wanted to go in the same car. We arrived at school at 7:10am. We told our classmates about what happened the previous night and they envied us. The following evening we were going to have dinner at KFC with Karaca family

and Miss. Serife. We left school at 5 o'clock as soon as we arrived there we start to order immediately and Mrs.Grace paid for us. We were all hungry and there were a lot of people. We took a lot of pictures and we were so full. We can hardly walk because we ate too much. Around 6:45pm we arrived at the dormitory and we started to study. We're glad that tea time has come because we got relaxed, eat and talk with our teachers. We watched some comedy clips and a moral story. Before bed time our teachers came to our room and gave a gift to each one of us. We had a little talk and we went to bed. We don't want that night to pass

because we were going back home the next day. Finally, tomorrow do come. We had to pack our bags and leave Sevgi dormitory. We said goodbye to teachers and arrived at school with wonderful memories of our first time at a dormitory since 8th grade. 2 nights at Sevgi dormitory we had so much fun; we learned how to be independent and staying together helping each other. If our chance comes again, we will definitely go back there again. Thanks to all the teachers and supervisors for taking care of us,especially our homeroom teacher who had organized and arranged everything for us. Prepared by 12F Thyna and Jessica
