WINDSOR MATTERS

ROAD WORK AHEAD

State Hwy. 257 & Eastman Park Dr. Intersection and Roadway Improvements Major Intersection Project Begins Mid-May

The Town of Windsor is starting a significant roadwork project along State Hwy. 257 and Eastman Park Dr. that is anticipated to have major traffic impacts. Work starts mid-May and will be completed in early 2024.

The State Hwy. 257 and Eastman Park Dr. project is intended to widen the intersection significantly to improve safety and functionality. The town is coordinating this project with the Colorado Department of Transportation, and several other entities. During the intersection project, road patterns will undergo significant changes and throughout the duration of this project commuters are encouraged to consider alternative routes to avoid State Hwy. 257 from Walnut St. to Crossroads Blvd. and to avoid Eastman Park Dr. from Water Valley Pkwy./Cornerstone Dr. to State Hwy. 257.

On top of major traffic impacts, there will be times in which residents will have temporary business access detours. However, the majority of this project will take place during the summer months while school is not in session to lessen impacts to traffic. Due to the nature of this project, there can be many factors that are yet to be predicted and out of the town’s control – such as supply chain issues, availability of entities such as the utility companies and the railroad, weather and contractor delays.

During the town’s intersection work, CDOT will also be working on another State Hwy. 257 project, resurfacing

State Hwy. 257 & Eastman Park Spring 2023 - Early 2024

Windsor is working with the Colorado Dept. of Transportation (CDOT), Great Western Railroad, and utility companies such as Xcel and Comcast, to widen the east side of the intersection. This will improve traffic capacity, turning movements for large semi-truck traffic, and pedestrian safety. Improvements include signage and restriping, mill and overlay, expanding the intersection in the northeast/southeast/ southwest quadrants, reconstruction of concrete medians, curb and gutter improvements, railroad gate modifications, traffic signal equipment upgrades, and improved bike lanes and sidewalks. CDOT is also working to repair several lengths along State Hwy. 257.

Railroad Crossing Improvements

Late 2023 - Early 2024

CDOT awarded grant money to improve the railroad crossing at Weld County Rd. 17 & Weld County. Rd. 60. The grant covers the asphalt approach, concrete at the crossing, guardrails, entrance gates, crossbucks, flashers and rail improvements. Windsor will add gates, medians, signage and pavement markings. During this project, residents near the intersection can expect to hear train horns.

THE LIFE CYCLE

OF

A

Road

Roads are a lot like houses. Maintain them over time, they last longer and repairs cost less than if you let needed repairs go untouched.

Over time deterioration starts to happen. If the Town of Windsor ignored these issues, it could lead to increased costs, travel time and also hinder roadway safety.

Whether it’s filling potholes, sealing cracks, overlaying asphalt, or restriping lines, staff constantly assess roads for improvements.

Maintaining over 263 center lane miles takes a lot of work and requires patience and careful driving from commuters and residents alike. Thank you, Windsor residents, for driving safe and following posted speed limits in work zones, protecting our staff in the process.

Road Replacement

Crack Seal

Used to fill in gaps and cracks in a road. This type of preventative maintenance can be repeated as needed.

When a road has met the end of its useful life—meaning other repairs are no longer an option—the road must be replaced.

This is costly work that involves everything from utility infrastructure and subgrade to concrete and asphalt.

Asphalt Overlay

In this process, the top few inches of the road are replaced with new asphalt. Aside from total road replacement, this repair is among the most impactful to traffic, but is also more cost effective.

7

Roadway Seal

Covers the street with a thin layer of oil and rocks to seal small cracks and exposed rock within the pavement.

6

Curb & Gutter Repair

Curbs and gutters along the side of a road help guide rain and snow melt off the road. These are often repaired if they become a hazard or do not drain water away from the road properly.

Pothole Repair

If left untreated, a pothole will get larger which could accelerate the deterioration of the road around it.

Lane Stripes

Weather and age can impact how often a road needs to be striped. Because stripes guide traffic patterns, they are vital to roadway safety.
