Vespa Road Trip South of France

VESPA ROAD TRIP

1991 was an interesting year: British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee of the Swiss nuclear research center CERN publishes the first website, thus launching the World Wide Web. Ötzi is found in the South Tyrolean Alps. The Warsaw Pact is dissolved and, who doesn‘t remember, the multi-party system is introduced in the Seychelles. The whole year is accompanied in Germany by the number one hit of the Scorpions: „Wind of Change“.

VESPA ROAD TRIP 5

Imyself had bought my first Vespa scooter a year earlier and decided in late summer that I would cut off my hair and become a „scooter boy“. The youth subculture from GB wasn‘t as well known as some American influences at the time, but was gaining followers. The guys with their cut scooters, Domestos jeans, bomber jackets and bald heads with curls in front of their foreheads were a hundred times cooler than all American youth cultures combined. The center of the scene were the „runs“ that took place all over Germany.

In 1991, this culture found popularity not only in Germany and I could hardly wait to visit a run with the scooter. About 1500 km away from where I lived at the time, in the south of France, a scooter club held its first meeting. More precisely, in the south-east of France, between the Alps and the Côte d‘Azur, in the small town of Mormoiron.

The „Scooter Club du Sud Est“ around their president Henri still exists. Luckily, because they are friends with Alex, Ralf and SIP Scootershop for more than two decades. They are also still active and organized a run in 2021 for the 30th anniversary of the meeting. The event is a highlight in the French calendar. Reason enough for SIP to make the annual tour to the friends in France.

START IN BAD WEATHER

We look forward to every tour, but the prospect of meeting our friends from the Scooter Club du Sud Est was something special. In gorgeous scenery under the sun of southern France, combined with a route that leads 80% through the highest and most beautiful Alpine regions. Past the Eiger, Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva.

Unfortunately, the weather threw a spanner in the works. For the outward journey only rain was announced. On the first day we got off lightly. On the highway towards the Alps everything stayed dry. However, we drove on the first pass stage only on wet roads and in its intensity changing drizzle. We had to cancel

the second pass stage altogether because we would have been caught in a thunderstorm at 2400 m altitude. Arriving in Grindelwald, Switzerland, in the evening, despite the rain and clouds, made up for a lot. The iconic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains surround the town with a majestic backdrop. From the hotel room, a murmur of countless mountain streams could be heard from every direction, plunging hundreds of feet into the depths. For me as a flatlander / city dweller, even after four years in Bavaria, a goosebump experience.

In the morning of the second day it was quickly clear that we would not take off the rain suit the whole day. The stage led through the high alpine Switzerland and past Lake Geneva. Unfortunately, fog, rain and clouds were so dense that we could not see the mountains for the most part, but could only guess. All that could be seen of Lake Geneva was a section as large as the duck pond in my neighboring village. The biggest excitement was a breakdown in a seven kilometer long, two-lane highway tunnel without a hard shoulder.

Attention cows! Not only the rain demanded our fullest concentration on the first stages.

There is no bad Weather,... nano rainwear by Tucano Urbano.

8 VESPA ROAD TRIP

The nightmare on every scooter tour. I had connected a cable on the ignition of my scooter a little too quickly shortly before departure. Vibrations have led to the fact that about 500 m after entering the tunnel, the connection was canceled. Hectic repair while trucks with a half meter distance and about 90 km/h pass. Just as the scooter is running again, we get a visit from the Swiss police. The right lane has now red sign and we get an escort with blue lights on our own lane. Fortunately for us, the officers were very friendly. Still, an experience I would hate to repeat.

ARRIVAL IN SUNSHINE

On the third day, the sun finally shines. We start in Grenoble for a short stage of about 200 km to our destination in Mormoiron. We ride through the foothills of the Alps. Easy mountain stretches under blue skies. Lunch in a small French village. At every break a concert of crickets. Slowly the tour becomes as we imagined it. In the afternoon we finally arrive at the run site. It is located at a lake. The organizers have set up a large outdoor bar and a stage. The highlight is a large dance floor made of laminate, also outdoors,

and built just for the event. The meeting is already well attended, we buy a cold beer, the evening can begin. Saturday is the fourth day of our tour and, as usual, the day when the program takes place at the scooter meeting. We use the morning to screw on the scooters and to fix the collected small problems of the outward journey. After lunch in the sun, at the fountain of a small historical market place, we go to the meeting. On the program is, of course, an Alldayer. Dealer booths and club displays are set up around the open-air counter. We from SIP Scootershop also have a booth and show

our latest own products and chat with the many visitors. There is a custom show, a slow race, a band and a performance test stand. A nice, usual run afternoon - finally again!

ROLLING HILLS, COLORFUL FIELDS

We start off into the hills of Provence. Long curves with phenomenal views through wide, blooming lavender fields. Then the mountains get higher again. The last section before our stage destination Briancon in the French High Alps. We cross a pass, the Col d‘Izoard, at 2400 meters above sea level. Unusually, the road is perfect at this altitude. New asphalt, breathtaking views and sunshine. The most beautiful stage on the Tour so far and just ridden by the Tour de France. We enter Briancon. At a traffic circle, within sight of the hotel, the prospect of a cold beer makes me lose focus. In an impressively uncoordinated move, I first shift gears and then frantically mix up the sequence of clutch, gearshift and gas. A harsh noise and I know immediately that my transmission is dead. 7:30 p.m., the next spare part is four hours one-way away. Good night ...

The team from Scooter Club du Sudest and the SIP Team
VESPA ROAD TRIP 9
„NEW ASPHALT, BREATHTAKING VIEWS. THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STAGE ON THE TOUR SO FAR AND JUST RIDDEN BY THE TOUR DE FRANCE “

The penultimate stage, the sixth day, leads through Italy to Lake Lugano. My day begins with endless phone calls to the French representative of my automobile club. The night before we went through all the options and it became clear: Even if I get the transmission and can change it on the spot, we‘ll be busy with it all day and won‘t be able to start on the long stage until the evening. I ask the group to continue and put my fate in the hands of bored foreign language students on the breakdown hotline. To make a long story short: towards the evening I am still sitting in Briancon.

In the Whatsapp group of my fellow travellers the first pictures of Lago Lugano pop up. The guys are just coming out of the water in the sun and hold an ice-cold Spritz in their hands. Only the mountains in the background I have here also. In the meantime I am informed that there is no rental car within a radius of 100 km and the train connections from the town are fully booked. Otherwise my automobile club wishes me good luck. My girlfriend just picks me up quickly with our minibus. At 5 o‘clock in the morning we arrive at home. We learned a lot about Switzerland. For example, that you

can‘t get vignettes at most border crossings after 8 p.m. and that all gas stations are closed at night.

EASY WAY HOME THANKS TO A WELDING MACHINE

The last day of the tour begins for me at 2 p.m., at home in my own bed. The tour group has of course long since been on the road. One last Alpine pass in Switzerland. A piece of the picturesque Lechtal and the Arlbergpass, which leads through Austria and thus through the fifth country on the tour. Unfortunately, there is also a defect. Alex spontaneously needs a welder. The group is lucky. Behind a door on the highway is an industrial area with garages. Immediately the first mechanic is enthusiastic about the Vespa scooters and helps. After about 30 minutes the journey can continue. In the early evening the group reaches Landsberg.

The SIP Tour 2021 was again an experience. Even if the weather was initially not on our side and I could not finish a tour for the first time. What remains are impressions of the

ride through the Swiss and French high Alps. The lavender fields of Provence and the small towns in the middle of the vineyards. The best thing about the tour: the destination was a scooter meeting.

30 years ago I could not be present at the first meeting in Mormoiron. Now that I‘ve had the honor of getting to know the meeting and the French scene, I know what I missed. A well organized and fun run. Beautiful and fancy scooters. The tour to this area is always a dream. All in all one of the most attractive meetings in Europe. The most important thing is the people: open, friendly and interesting. They tick like we did when we decided back then to combine our lifestyle with the scooter. I can hardly wait for a reunion.

Best Workspaces Award 2022

12 BEST WORKSPACES AWARD
The building of the company headquarters planned building of the company headquarters of SIP Scootershop GmbH. Best Workspaces 2022: Excellent Working Environments and Office Buildings 2022 Hardcover, ISBN 3766725777, €98. Available in bookstores.

Back in October last year, we reported that the SIP Scootershop headquarters had been nominated for the Best Workspaces Award 2022. Now the international jury has decided and our building, which was designed by Archtitekturbüro Ott from Augsburg, has been awarded in the category „Office Buildings“. We are very pleased about this.

SIP Scootershop founder and CEO Ralf Jodl: „Receiving the prestigious Best Workspaces Award confirms our efforts to provide modern and creativity-enhancing work environments for our employees. We are proud and happy that our intensive planning and thought

processes have now been recognized by this award. And of course we also congratulate the architects from Augsburg, who perfectly implemented our visions.“

BEST WORKSPACES

is the first international architecture award for intelligent working environments. Callwey Verlag and its partners bring together the best workspace interiors judged by an independent jury of experts and connect decision-makers, planners and manufacturers digitally and live. The vision of the Best Workspaces Award is to unite all those concepts on one platform that

are also internationally pioneering. The Best Workspaces Award was offered for the first time in 2020. This year, 2022, the winners and honorees will be presented for the first time in a comprehensive yearbook. 50 office projects impressed the jury with their design and innovative concepts in the categories of working environments and office buildings. They are documented in detail in the book with texts, plans and pictures. The jury awarded one first prize, five commendations and 44 awards. Twelve products were also honored as the solutions of the year. Partners of the competition are the BMW Group, the architecture magazine Baumeister, the platforms baunetz interior|design and OFFICE DEALZZ, and the office magazine OFFICE ROXX.

Wood, concrete and glass create a real vintage atmosphere in the offices.

BEST WORKSPACES AWARD 13

ABOUT THE BEST WORKSPACES AWARD

The title already indicates this: Instead of places, this architecture award deals with spaces. If you take a closer look at the historical development of work per se, you quickly realize that over the course of the last few centuries, people have allowed themselves to become more and more fixed: White-collar workers and civil servants spent their weekdays at the counter or at a fixed work table - then in front of documents and behind the typewriter, today at the computer. In this way, a veritable culture of one‘s own place developed in the individual or even open-plan office. It consisted of an established swivel chair, personal desk decorations, comfortable office sandals, a green plant, and the sacred coffee mug with an inscription. But the interior design hardly played a role. Colleagues and customers met across the desk laminated in office gray, via telephone and fax, or in the PVC-covered hallway - filing racks and neon lights everywhere. Now, however, we have arrived in the 21st century and are pleased to note that occupational psychologists and physicians, ergonomists and organizational scientists, but above all architects and designers as well as office furnishers have intensively taken up the phenomenon of the workplace and are continuously transforming it into a completely

new quality. This becomes strikingly clear when one looks at the projects submitted for this competition.

Apart from the aspects of the external working place, which the increasingly used digitization makes possible comprehensively or in combined form and will probably continue to perfect, employees and companies or institutions are of course still dependent on the territorial office. However, the way they deal with it has changed. Above all, new hybrid forms are emerging in which producing is combined with a loosely relaxed position or the factual-functional room furnishings are combined with elements of a homely ambience. Informing, thinking, writing and designing as well as communicating are given new, flexible „places“ - spaces that are to be thought of in a staggered manner:

starting from the immediate place of activity at the individual table or laptop, they develop centrifugally and, with increasing openness, become ever larger, more expansive. The next conceptual dimension of

the workspace is directly surrounding contact and collaboration zones, from multispaces or office landscapes to active-based working, expanded by supplementary functional areas on the floor. This is followed by additional offerings in the building - via the inclusion of the urban environment to virtual extension via digital technologies. Via large screens and VR glasses, even the whole world can become the office. If that‘s not a remarkable evolution!

At the same time, practical knowledge is becoming more and more reflective, planning principles are becoming more demanding. The contemporary creative questioning of the quasilegislative definition „employee equals fixed work desk equals fixed work location“ alone calls for flexible office floor plans and digital communication technology with which one can be integrated from the adjacent building, from home or, for example, also from the Far East. Added to this are the competencies of the flanking institutes and researchers, and here the concern of the planners and those associated

„THAT‘S WHY THE WILLINGNESS TO DISCUSS AND THE INSPIRATION OF EMPLOYERS AND DESIGNERS ALIKE ARE GROWING NOTICEABLYUNDOUBTEDLY A GOOD DEVELOPMENT.AND IT‘S EXEMPLARY, BECAUSE AFTER ALL, BEST WORKSPACES ARE ULTIMATELY ABOUT US, THEPEOPLE.“

experts is for an incomparably larger portfolio of architectural aspects than two generations ago. While the specific optimization of effectiveness or occupational safety have long been conventional planning parameters, those involved today are reflecting on much more: modulated light zones and controlled room acoustics that promote concentration and performance enhancement by means of absorbers or noise-canceling technologies, suppression of stressors, or interior design offerings for professional and social communication or interaction. Consideration is also being given to an environmentally compatible energy balance or the use of recycled materials. Part of the progressive spatial and temporal organization of work are offers for temporary recovery phases in creative relaxation zones, café bars and gyms. It has long been obvious that not only the health of employees, but also their inner attitude and ambition are relevant for an optimal work situation. Here, interior design makes a significant contribution through subtle to clearly perceptible effects on the work situation. Cognitive and neuroscience as well as spatial psychology confirm the effectiveness of even small design improvements such as the pleasant tactility of surfaces or the greenterior principle - the atmospheric and climatic inclusion of plants. In sum, the task of competent interior design for workspaces

must be to develop a holistic design concept, and this is a thoroughly professional, highly complex challenge.

After all, as already mentioned above, a large number of very different parameters have to be taken into account: the factual conditions of the architectural shell, the specific requirements of the respective work processes, the type of work in terms of presence and interaction, the inclusion of customer areas or the integration of communal and leisure facilities, daycare centers, etc. It is not for nothing that we now speak of working worlds.

Fifty awards were determined from the diverse and demanding submissions, which were divided into the categories of workspaces for interior design and office buildings. Of these, five in turn received recognition, and one project was awarded 1st prize as „Best Workspace“. The list of criteria for the workspace interiors was flexibility. Collaboration, communication, concentration and well-being. For building construction projects of the office building type in commercial or mixed use were judged: Innovation factor, timeliness, design and dialogue with the surroundings. In addition, twelve very different workspace products received recognition. Anyone who now delves into the documentation of the Architecture Award presented here will not only find a detailed presentation of each individual award-winning or prize-winning project or product.

At the same time, they will also find an aesthetically committed and conceptually exciting portfolio of current working environments, cleverly combined with valuable references to designing offices and relevant manufacturers, whereby the core aspects of the new office culture listed above are clearly illustrated here and there. The interviews attached to each project are also instructive. In them, the architects and those involved on the client side comment on functionality, choice of materials, and their attitude toward atmosphere and spatial-homelike quality.

Last but not least, we should not forget the building owners involved here - companies and decision-makers - without whose commitment an appropriate and sustainable work culture based on building, space and equipment would be unthinkable. People are sensitive to problems of the future and want to transform in a meaningful way. That is why the willingness to discuss and the inspiration of both employers and designers are noticeably growing - undoubtedly a good development. And it is exemplary, because after all, the Best Workspaces are ultimately about us, the people.

16 WINTER ALERT

Winter Alert

Winter is not exactly the high season for Vespa pilots and scooterists. Actually, it‘s the time when you wish you had a heated, well-equipped workshop where you can get your favourites in shape for spring. A place to dream of the first rays of sunshine and warm temperatures.

WINTER ALERT 17
18 WINTER ALERT
Screw-on spikes and studded tires turn the Vespa into a snowplow

The cold beer tastes good in the warm workshop, a glance outside shows: it‘s been snowing for hours. Spring still seems a long way off. But wait a minute, can‘t you do something with all that white splendour? Snowboarding, sure. But what if the lifts are all closed? Then we‘ll just build our own lift, the Vespa certainly has enough power. Only the tyres need more grip. Can you add spikes to a Vespa tyre? Sure, there are screw-on spikes for that. Add a sturdy knobbly tyre and the entertainment can begin! Most of the time, the obviously pointless

projects are even more fun... The screw-in spikes are screwed into the thick blocks with a cordless screwdriver. This is how front and rear tyres are prepared. Outside it has stopped snowing, time for a test ride!

The thick studded tyres on the Vespa equipped with the screw spikes provide traction on ice and snow. If you have a friend with a snowboard and a few metres of rope, there are no limits to your imagination. We let off steam in the winter fairytale until it got dark.

THIS IS HOW WINTER LOSES ITS TERROR AND OPENS UP COMPLETELY NEW PERSPECTIVES. WE HAVE CERTAINLY NOT BEEN HIBERNATING UNTIL SPRING ARRIVES!

FENDERLIGHT TOUR

1. VESPA FENDERLIGHT TOUR

„The past is not dead, it is not even past,“ is a famous quote by William Faulkner. I had to think of this when I met up with about 30 other Vespisti on Saturday morning in a parking lot in the south of Munich. We all gathered to participate in the 1st Fenderlight Vespa Tour of the Vespa Club Munich. Special invitation had gone out to the Vespa Oldtimer Freunde München, another Munich Vespa club with a preference for the vintage scooters with the seductive curves. Separated in the colors, united in the matter: 2 clubs, one great passion.

NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

In light rain and wet roads as well as thunder, the Vespisti set off on their 8 inch tires. Such a ride on a Faro Basso Vespa is not for the faint of heart. But too weak nerves are good for nothing... Through Starnberg city and along Lake Starnberg to Bernried to the beautiful Buchheim Museum („The Boat“). The attempt to take a group picture in front of the wooden giraffes failed grandiosely, a sympathetic chaos ruled the otherwise tightly organized group. But in the meantime the thunderstorm had moved on and bright blue skies framed the Vespa Convoy picturesquely from then on. At the Markptplatz in Penzberg, a good-humored Stephan Huber from the snack bar of the same name awaited us. There was Weisswurst Carpaccio and delicious pasta, a well-deserved

refreshment at an epically long table, directly behind the accurately lined up Vespas. Italian lightness meets German sense of order.

To make it easier to say goodbye to this nice little place, host Stephan rode with us from now on and we continued around Lake Starnberg to the sophisticated town of Berg and there to the first house on the site, the Strandhotel Berg. The Vespa Club Munich did not let itself down and invited everyone to coffee and cake, with a magnificent view of Lake Starnberg. A worthy conclusion of this wonderful trip.

THANKS AND PRAISE GO TO THE VESPA CLUB MUNICH FOR THIS SUCCESSFUL FRIENDLY RIDE, FOR ORGANIZING AND INVITING!

Jockey‘s Boxenstop

24 JOCKEY‘S BOXENSTOP

SEXIEST WORKSHOPS: EVERYTHING ABOUT VESPA AND LAMBRETTA.

In beautiful Lower Bavaria, idyllically and quietly located, lovers of Vespa, but especially Lambretta scooters, can meet an expert whose name is known far beyond the borders of the country: Joachim Müller. Better known by his distinctive nickname „Jockey“, which is also the name of the store and workshop: „Jockey‘s Boxenstop“.

JOCKEY‘S BOXENSTOP 25

A QUARTER CENTURY WITH VESPA AND LAMBRETTA

Our visit is just in time for the 25th anniversary. The Lambretta temple has been in existence since 1996, and although Vespas are also serviced here in an extremely professional and expert manner, Jockey has earned its special reputation in the Lambretta sector. This is one reason why a store of this size can exist, even far from urban centers: He does not only rely on customers from the surrounding area, but his clientele comes from all over Germany. Even more, they also come from other European countries.

The business areas are diverse. The trade in used and new scooters is important for the customer base, but only takes up a small share of the business. The repair of scooters is much more in the focus of the daily business. Whether it‘s changing a cable, overhauling an engine, or repairing sheet metal damage, everything is contracted out here.

However, Jockey‘s Boxenstop is best known for two other areas of business: First, these are conversions and restoration of scooters. In other words, projects that go far beyond mere repairs. Scooters are restored and

brought into an original or even better condition. Custom scooters are also built according to customer specifications. Special paints are applied, high end accessories or chassis parts are installed, and complete engine tunings are offered.

And the master still does the work himself. Together with his workshop crew, he straightens frames on a specially built bench, adjusts cylinders or installs new wiring harnesses. In other words, a store where the customer still gets what it says: a pit stop from Jockey.

The second important pillar is the development and trade of Lambretta parts. Jockey has a large warehouse where almost everything that could be needed for a Lambretta is available. In winter, they occasionally develop their own parts to fill a gap in the market or supply.

Of course, Jockey parts can also be found in the SIP store, just as SIP Scootershop Lambretta parts are available from Jockey. Employee Markus has stock and sales under control. So does Jockey, a proven Lambretta specialist and two-wheel master. Especially valuable for his current job: he is a former SIP Scootershop employee.

Thanks to its history, the qualifications of Jockey and its employees, the wide range of business areas and craftsmanship, Jockey‘s Boxenstop has naturally long outgrown the status of a simple workshop or even a „wrench shop“. It‘s fun to look around the modernly designed building with its spacious showroom. Ideally with a little shopping at the counter and possibly a „techtalk“ over a coffee. A visit is always worthwhile for Lambretta or Vespa riders. And a very personal address may not be missing at this point: Jockey has been a customer of SIP Scootershop for more than 20 years.

THANK YOU FOR THAT!

Vespa Rally 200 Street Custom

Everyone has their favorite Vespa or simply a gap in their motor pool that needs to be filled. SIP Scootershop CEO Alex was looking for a Vespa Rally 200 for years. The sports scooter from the 70s was simply a must. Looking around (as of September 2021) for a Rally 200 on the Internet, it is hard to find a Rally under 8,000 euros.

28 VESPA RALLY

30 VESPA RALLY

ENGINE I

The first year on the road she rode with silver paint and black powder-coated attachments. Due to the original engine, the sound was also vintage, which was nice and unusual at first. Performance was limited and the riding experience could be described as „comfortable“. But Alex also had a tuned scooter in the garage, which meant that the Rally 200 was used less and less. Being on the road in style is all well and good, but slowness is no condition in the long run.

Tuning for the engine was needed. The goal was to build a durable, powerful touring scooter that Alex could ride quietly and unobtrusively. But strong on the uphill and fast on the highway. At that time, an aluminum cylinder from POLINI was just released and why not try something other than MALOSSI? No sooner said than done. The first build with the POLINI 210 cylinder, a long stroke crankshaft,

SIP Road racing exhaust 2.0, SIP clutch, the original SI 24 DELL‘ORTO carburetor and the variable ignition from VESPATRONIC. Only the original gearbox remained on the Rally 200. That was already a promising start.

PAINTING

Now the optics should also get an update and Alex decided on a color that perfectly matched the year of construction. Giallo Texas with the Max Meyer code: 1.298.2935. But please, in matte, as with nitro paint, because who wants to ride a Rally 200 that looks like it jumped out

of a candy box? But before the paint job can begin, the frame has to be precisely aligned on the straightening bench, because it had a severe impact from the previous owner. Finally, though, the Giallo Texas 935 is ready for action, as expert Sebastian Kirchner explains: „First of all, we prime with a twocomponent epoxy primer. Then we go to the painter. He does it all with two-component lacquer, and the ‚nitro finish‘ is done with slightly matt high-solids clear lacquer. This gives the Rally 200 the best UV protection and nothing can ‚chalk out‘ so that polishing would still be necessary.

WOW. THE COLOR GAVE EXACTLY THE DESIRED EFFECT AND MATCHED THE RALLY 200 PERFECTLY.

CHASSIS

At first, to keep the looks as original as possible, the original fork should be used. Therefore, the dilapidated parts were remade, such as the spring mounts. But after some back and forth and fruitless work, the chassis was also redesigned from scratch.

Since disc brakes are simply more reliable, a SIP conversion steering column was installed. Namely, the version shortened to 185 mm with original ground clearance. For the front shocks, Alex opted for the SIP Performance shock absorbers 2.0. It was important that the fender was not modified, but provided with a recess. For this, the fender mount and position of the shock absorber had to be changed. The fender was placed as centered as possible to give the shock absorber and spring enough room to not drag on the fender. Once the length is set correctly, the Rally has an exactly horizontal profile, which just looks mega.

SIP Performance 2.0 shocks were also used in the rear, and their absorbing abilities are simply outstanding. The spring is so perfectly tuned that the Rally is quiet on the road even at high speeds - just as it should be.

For the color, Alex opted for silver matte, because it looks at the same time noble and sporty as well as discreet and not disturbing.

For the disc brake, Alex chose a model from GRIMECA. However, he did not want the GRIMECA-typical spider web on the drum, but a smooth surface, because the looks should be original. If you just turn the drum with a lathe, you‘re left with sharp edges, angular fins, and missing paint. So Alex had the brake drum reworked by GRIMECA according to his wishes. The result was convincing.

The SIP brake caliper was made analogous to the shock absorbers also in silver matte and equipped with MALOSSI brake pads. The CRIMAZ master cylinder fitted harmoniously to the handlebars without the need for modification. And the ABM subtank, CNC machined in aluminum, is a feast for the eyes.

The brake line is from SPIEGLER and is made of „Stahlflex“. At the rear, the Rally 200 brakes on SIP Performance pads, the clutch lever comes from SIP Style. For the rims, Alex chose SIP tubeless rims with SIP Classic tires, which are approved for up to 150 km/h. The stainless steel cables are also from SIP and the frame was finally protected from corrosion with a cavity sealant from FLUIDFILM. Of course, all parts were installed by SIP in silver matt.

Visually, everything was as Alex had imagined and the lady now also had an engine and a chassis that would significantly improve the riding fun. But there was still something missing ...

ILLUMINATION

Let there be light and there was light. The new headlight was framed by the CNC milled lamp ring with SIP LED. The turn signals came from MOTOGADGET. To integrate both perfectly into the vehicle, a special SIP wiring harness was developed and installed. At the same time, it was converted to 12 volt DC and a battery was installed. The control unit of the SIP speedometer and all necessary electronic components were integrated almost invisible next to the battery under the spare wheel.

Alex also decided to add a SIP tachometer and in general it should be noted that the assembly was supposed to look perfect. So original slotted screws were used wherever necessary. Actually the VESPA was ready.

ENGINE II

In 2020, another small update for the engine was on the agenda. Alex exchanged the VESPATRONIC ignition for the SIP PERFORMANCE ignition. The exhaust was replaced, too, by the SIP Road 3.0. But then the Rally 200 was ready to go and has since more than proven its worth on many rides and tours. The Rally has real power from the bottom up and is not designed for peak performance. Between the construction of the engine and the first time on the road lay 7 years, 2 children and a move of the SIP headquarters. A lot has happened in terms of parts. The next time the engine is opened, for sure one of the smooth-running SIP long-stroke crankshafts will go in. Let‘s see, maybe a QUATTRINI too. Ride On!

Vespa Gigante replica

These days there was something very special to see on the well-known Internet marketplace Catawiki: The replica of a Vespa in 2:1 scale, as it was designed and manufactured in 1951 by Corradino d‘Ascanio, commissioned by Enrico Piaggio, for advertising purposes. The new model dates from 2011 and was now for sale. So if you were looking for a sculpture that would look good in front of the house next to the garden gnomes, you could now strike. Unfortunately, we do not know who bought this gigantic Vespa for how much money, but we hope this model is in good hands.

1951 - THE VESPA MYTH BECOMES BIG

Enrico Piaggio wanted to make the Vespa part of the „myth“ and commissioned Corradino d‘Ascanio. D‘Ascanio plays with the difference between „vision“ and „perception“. He invents a Vespa that deceives the observer. In fact, the human brain did not perceive a giant Vespa with a normal person on it, but a normal Vespa with a miniature person on it.

The „Vespone“ was unveiled in 1951 at the Fiera del Ciclo e Motociclo in Milan in the presence of the President of the Republic, then toured Italy for two

years for promotional purposes and was extremely successful. D‘Ascanio had thus succeeded in increasing the „myth“ of the Vespa. 60 years later, this myth was revived in eight months and with 2,000 hours of work. On a scale of 2:1, which corresponds to a volume and weight eight times greater.

Two stabilising wheels were installed for safety reasons. The seller emphatically points out that the Vespa sculpture has no engine and can not be driven. Well, you can not have everything. But the myth Vespa is kept alive by this replica in any case.

38 NAGEL MOTORS

NAGEL MOTORS: CUSTOM VESPAS FROM GARMISCH

When you first meet Nic Nagel, you don‘t think of Vespa scooters, scooter boys or mods. Nor does the coolly styled world of an advertising agency with minimalist desks come to mind. Visually, V8 engines, pinstriping and rock ‚n‘ roll dominate the area. His style is inspired by American subcultures, especially those of the 50s. Without committing himself too dogmatically to one direction, because that would be too boring for him.

SO WHY ARE WE INTRODUCING NIC TO YOU HERE?

In our series on the „Sexiest Vespa Workshops“? And why are we standing in front of an advertising agency in an idyllic Alpine panorama?

It‘s mainly because Nic is a man of many talents. We meet him at his advertising agency in Garmisch-Patenkirchen. A town that lies in a valley basin between the Zugspitze and

Wetterstein mountains, one of the most beautiful Alpine locations in Germany. This is where Nic is at home and where he grew up. When you enter the building, there is little in the typical look of an advertising agency. There is something to discover on every square inch. There is hardly an object that has not been creatively worked on or painted by Nic. In every corner, in every possible place, there are devotional objects from various subcultures or art movements. Mostly from the North American area. Pop art, 50s to 80s rock to punk, to many expressions of hip-hop culture. You don‘t even know where to look first. Only the Vespa combines Italian design and dolce vita with the English subcultures of mods and scooterboys. Of course, it is also present in the agency‘s premises. As a drawing, as a model converted to a custom object and of course as a real scooter. Of course, in Nagel style with fancy paint and rebuilt frame.

HOW DOES THIS MIXTURE COME ABOUT?

Nic started as a Vespa mechanic. In his spare time he discovered his passion for the Vespa in the late 80s and already as a teenager he rebuilt and tuned it extensively.

At that time he completed an apprenticeship as a screen printer and typeface painter. This was followed by various positions as a freelance graphic designer, until he returned to his home country in 2001 and founded the Nagel advertising agency. His passion for Vespa and wrenching has always accompanied him during this time. Later, motorcycles and American cars from the 50s (and earlier) were added. He has his own kingdom for his projects, a little off the beaten track and with a view of the mountains. Vespas are also found here. Cutdowns, oldies, hits - all genres are represented. Everything in Nagel-style, of course. Everything creatively painted, pinstriped, welded or tuned.

IN HIS AGENCY EVERYTHING IS CREATIVELY PAINTED, PINSTRIPED, WELDED OR TUNED.

Vespa workshop Toller Roller

For around 15 years, Tom and Erik have been making the hearts of Vespa fans beat faster with their „Toller Roller“ workshop. The two scooter specialists offer in their lovingly furnished premises - decorated with Vespa advertising boards and many devotional objects - all kinds of services around the Vespa vehicle. From restoration to the procurement and installation of spare parts and tuning accessories to paint jobs, they offer Vespa lovers and their scooters a complete all-round service and help and advice.

40 TOLLER
ROLLER

Founded in 2005 by Tom and Erik, the workshop „Toller Roller“ was born out of personal passion for scooters. This allowed the two to restore and gradually expand their Vespa collection themselves. Over the years, it also developed into a professional hotspot for customers. In the process, the two scooter fans complement each other ideally: while Tom guarantees the quality of the vehicles with his many years of experience in technical professions, Erik ensures fresh design and new ideas. Under the motto „as true to the original as possible“, each gem is restored and refurbished with great attention to detail. For example, the two painstakingly remove overpaint layer by layer until the original is revealed again.

ORIGINAL PAINTS FOR VESPAS

But that‘s not all: Tom and Erik also have the original paint formulations and Vespa color lists, including color samples and codes with vehicle and year of manufacture assignment, so that virtually all paints up to the Vespa V98 can be remixed.

Especially the restoration of original paints is an art in itself. Thanks to this expertise, it is possible to restore the Vespa to its authentic look even after an accident. A unique selling point that inspires beyond the country‘s borders to Austria and Switzerland.

LITTLE HINT:

Those who do not want to drive so far can easily and conveniently have the original paint sent to their home and do it themselves. But those who make the trip will certainly not be disappointed - because the charm of the lovingly furnished workshop, coupled with

tradition and innovation, makes the heart of every Vespa fan beat faster. By the way, the guys from Pfaffenhofen are SIP Scootershop Official Dealer since 2005, meaning: you can get our complete range of own products and spare parts there.

At www.tollerroller.de you can find more information about Tom‘s and Erik‘s workshop.

Buying advice Which helmet?

46 HELMET ADVICE

You have a Vespa, old or new, and are looking for the perfect helmet. Or are you planning to buy a scooter? Even motorcyclists can learn something here ...

Large selection of helmets and protective clothing as well as fashion and accessories around the Vespa are available at the SIP Scootershop Flagship Store in Landsberg.

The selected helmet should be worn for 10 to 15 minutes to check comfort.

How do I find the right helmet?

Which helmet suits me?

How do I know if my helmet fits?

You need competent helmet advice! Let‘s start with some basics about motorbike helmets which are worth knowing:

MATERIAL & STRUCTURE

GRP/fibreglass belongs to the group of thermosets and has excellent energy-dissipating properties. The helmet shell consists of several laminated layers, often in combination with carbon, aramid or Kevlar. Helmets made of carbon belong to the high-end models. They impress with a lower weight, a high degree of stability and a service life of around ten years. ABS/Resin is an upgraded polycarbonate.

These helmets have a shorter lifespan (less than five years) and cannot be painted. A special feature are the helmets from Shoei, which are characterised by an Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM). A mixture of different fibreglass and synthetic resin.

THE STRUCTURE OF A HELMET

A helmet consists of two different layers that work together to provide the necessary protection. The hard outer shell is made of thermoplastic (ABS) or fibre composite

plastics (GRP/carbon). It must withstand the impact, distribute the acting forces evenly and cushion peaks. The inner shell made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) functions as a „shock absorber“: the kinetic energy of the impact is transformed by material deformation and thus protects the head. The more the inner shell can deform, the more energy is absorbed. Both layers must therefore be perfectly matched to each other. In the research & development departments, helmet manufacturers work on constantly improving the protective properties. The inner lining is made of artificial leather or cotton.

HELMET FASTENERS

The helmets at SIP Scootershop have either a ratchet, click or double D-ring closure. Racers prefer the double D-ring, as it withstands the most traction and fits perfectly on the chin. The ratchet closure is easy to adjust even when wearing gloves, while the click closure works like a car seatbelt. You should not let the fastener stop you from buying your favourite helmet. You get used to every fastener.

The helmet should fit tightly and not slip into the neck.

HELMET ADVICE 49

In our flagship store in Landsberg you will find 300sqm of casual motorcycle clothing and receive great advice from Sandra, Moritz and Therese. We look forward to your visit

LIFETIME OF A HELMET AND THE PERFECT CARE

The TÜV estimates the useful life of a helmet at five years. Hand on heart, how old is your current motorbike helmet? However, care, storage and of course the kilometres ridden play a major role. Ideally, the helmet surface should be cleaned after every ride. Lukewarm water, neutral soap in combination with a lintfree kitchen cloth should be left on the surface for two to three minutes to prevent insects from drying. Afterwards, the helmet can be wiped with a microfibre cloth. Wax and polishes, on the other hand, are not suitable for helmet cleaning. The inner lining of high-end helmets can often be removed and washed regularly.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF DAMAGE AND ACCIDENTS?

In general, you should avoid letting any helmet hit the ground hard. Of course, the impact force is reduced without the head, which weighs about six kilograms. But even if the helmet has not suffered any damage at first glance, microcracks can ensure that the full protective effect is no longer available.

If in doubt, it is better to buy a new helmet. After an accident, however, the helmet should be replaced in any case.

HOW DO I FIND MY PERFECT HELMET ?

The best way to measure the circumference of the head is with a tape measure. Place the tape about one centimetre above the eyebrows and then bring it together again at the back of the head. Compare the result with this table and you will know exactly what size helmet you should wear. Wearers of glasses measure the circumference in the same way, but choose the size so that the glasses do not press on the nose.

Other points to consider:

• The selected helmet should be worn for ten to 15 minutes to check comfort.

• The helmet should fit tightly and not slip down the neck.

• The head should have no slack in the helmet, i.e. when you turn the helmet, the head should „go with it“.

• The cheek pads can be a little tighter at the beginning, because they will give way by one or two millimetres over time. The forehead pads, on the other hand, are thinner and do not do this.

• The straps of the fastener should not press against the neck but against the chin.

• When the chin strap is closed, the helmet should not be able to fall forwards into the face.

JET, FULL-FACE, FLIP-UP, HALF-SHELL OR CHILDREN‘S HELMET?

There is no alternative to a helmet. But helmets are of course also important for the look and often an expression of one‘s own personal style: helmets, visors, glasses for motorbikes and scooters and the corresponding accessories. The choice is enormous, because every motorcyclist, scooter, scooter rider and cyclist has his or her own head, and there is no accounting for taste. We therefore have an extensive range of naked jet helmets, jet helmets with visors, full-face helmets, flip-up/modular helmets, half-shell helmets and children‘s helmets. Plus lots of accessories like goggles, visors, sun visors and even cycle helmets. You can try on and test ride all our helmets in our shop in Landsberg!

52 MODEL HISTORY

Vespa Model History

In a multi-part series on our SIP TV YouTube channel we present detailed editions covering every Vespa model from 1946 until today. In this edition we start with the Wideframe.

The market for Vespa scooters is large and diverse. Due to the immense number of models and technical differences, it is not always easy to keep track of everything. That‘s why we‘re shedding some light on the subject in a series of several parts and explaining everything you need to know about the different series. This part is about the Vespa Wideframe models and the questions such as „Where does the design of the Vespa actually come from and how did the term Vespa ‚Wideframe‘ come about?“ as well as „How can I recognise these and what are the technical details?“.

75 years and not a bit tired: What began on 23 April 1946 in the small Italian town of Pontedera with a simple idea has developed into a worldwide success story. We are talking about the Vespa „Wasp“, which was to take not only the sunny streets of Italy but also hearts around the world by storm within a very short time. Until then, the manufacturer Piaggio had been active in completely different segments: From shipbuilding and the manufacture of railway carriages to aircraft construction -

Part 1

Wideframe

the entrepreneur Rinaldo Piaggio had shown a golden hand with each new sector. But shortly after the end of the war in 1945, his son and successor Enrico Piaggio noticed an increased demand for a practical, but at the same time inexpensive, simple and easily drivable means of transport. To finally realise the idea, he commissioned the inventor and engineer Corradino D‘Ascanio, who had already advised the company in the aviation segment.

HOW DID THE TYPICAL VESPA DESIGN COME ABOUT?

The Vespa owes its legendary shape primarily to practical considerations. In order to appeal to as many customers as possible, Enrico Piaggio developed a design that would appeal to people of all ages, even those with no previous experience. His prototype was as simple as it was ingenious. A drive unit without chains, easy-to-handle wheel mounting with small wheels and a simple construction that enabled even inexperienced users to quickly enter the world of Vespa.

D‘Ascanio‘s signature was unmistakable. For example, he used a front wheel suspension for the design that had already been used in aviation. The idea of designing the scooter with a self-supporting sheet steel body, in which the body and chassis form a single unit, also stems from his experience in other mobility sectors. They ensured that the design was rigid, light, very compact and allowed a free step-through for easy mounting and dismounting.

It should also be possible to change tyres without any problems. For this purpose, he developed a single-sided wheel suspension, where it was possible to change the tyre both in the front and in the rear with only four screws. Conveniently, due to the poor road conditions at the time, each model even came with a spare wheel as standard. Unlike the motorbikes, it was also quite easy to start. Instead of many gear levers and buttons, only a choke had to be pulled to start the engine, which was located on the rear wheel. Other advantages of the design were manoeuvrability, protection against rain and splash water, and easy operation and repair.

1946 it started with the Vespa -

HOW CAN A VESPA WIDEFRAME BE RECOGNISED?

Among the unmistakable features of the series are the filigree contours of the body and the gently rounded, curved tail. Also characteristic of the production series is the inspection hatch located in the step-through, which offers a very wide centre tunnel under the seat. A tubular handlebar, the carburettor flap in the frame and the engine swinging arm, which were separate from the engine at the time, are further typical features of the series. The headlight was also located on the mudguard at the beginning, but was later mounted on the tubular handlebar. The most distinctive feature, however, is the design of the conspicuously large frames, which were much wider than those of the following generations. A characteristic feature that is familiar to every Vespa fan under the name „Wideframe“.

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT VESPA WIDEFRAME MODELS?

Until the end of production of the Vespa Wideframes in the early 1960s, around 1.7 million units were sold in Italy (not counting licensed models) in various versions. But which are the most significant? Among the most important examples is the Vespa 98 - whose name derives from its 98 cc engine capacity. Not only was it Piaggio‘s first mass-produced scooter, but it is also considered today to be the first wideframe model, nicknamed „Paperino“ (duckling) because of its design, and it reached an impressive 60 km/h. It was produced in two series - two with the same engine and one with a different engine. There were two series of

this - two in ‚46 and two in ‚47 with the same engines. The next stage was the Vespa 125 from 1948, which already had a side stand and a more powerful 125 cc star cylinder engine. The Vespas of the late 40s/early 50s and the V30 series are also significant. In the latter, the design switched to a cable shift from the 1951 model year onwards. After that, the ‚53 to ‚56 versions came onto the market as intermediate stages. All versions, which carried the headlight on tubular handlebars, already had an engine capacity of 150 cc.

Perhaps the most important Vespa sports model of all is the „Sei Giorni“. This was developed for the six-day race „Sei Giorni Internationale di Varese“ and dominated the race series in 1951 with nine gold medals. It was also regarded as a scooter for experimentation: many components that were tested often found their way into series production. This was also the case with the later 150 GS, which was called the GS3 in Germany and was produced under licence by Messerschmitt. Up to that time, there had never been a version of the scooter with such different characteristics and shapes as the Italian counterpart. While in Italy all Vespas were equipped with a Siem or Aquila seat, the examples in this country had a Denfeld seat and brighter headlights. Apart from the components mentioned, both versions were similar in many respects.

With light road tuning optimized, a Wideframe Vespa is also suitable for touring

WHAT WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT CHANGES?

Frame from a single mould

One of the most important changes in the evolution of the Vespa range concerned the beaded frame, which was used from 1946. Instead of using several parts as before, the engineers in Italy opted for production from a single pressing. The material of the add-on parts such as mudguards and side covers was also optimised in the course of time. In the beginning, the parts were made of aluminium, but later steel was used as the manufacturing material. A little tip on the side: to determine the difference between aluminium and steel materials, it is advisable to either knock against the mudguard or, alternatively, to use a magnet to determine the material.

Chassis and shock absorbers adapt

The suspension has also changed over the years. Instead of using a front swing arm with only one coil spring as in the beginning, the models from ‚50/‘51 onwards came off the production line with a hydraulic damper and spring in the front suspension. Previously, for models equipped only with a spring, Piaggio brought a friction damper onto the market as an accessory. With this, the parts rotated against each other and - depending on the setting - the rebound and compression stages varied in strength. From 1955, the system was used with a shock absorber, as it is still known today.

The gearstick becomes more comfortable

Whereas a Vespa up to the V15 in 1950 was still shifted by a so-called linkage, with a steel rod connecting all the way back to the gearshift detent, from the V30 onwards the Italian manufacturer relied on a more reliable and at the same time more comfortable cable shift. Despite this change, the cable routed into the frame, but still protruded relatively unprotected into the outer area. It was not until one of the last Wideframe models, the VB1, that the cast handlebars were introduced, so that from then on all cables were fully protected. Also on the 150 GS series, the cables disappeared into the cast handlebars from the VS2 onwards.

From single-channel to dual-channel engine

The next significant milestone in the development of the Vespa Wideframe was the change from single- to dual-channel engines, which significantly increased the performance of the engines for the time. Thus, from the V33 onwards, the petrol-gas mixture reached the cylinder from the crankcase not only via one, but even via two transfer channels. From now on, the so-called jaw was no longer completely or partially open, but completely closed. In addition, the entire colour scheme of the scooters changed from green to grey/beige, while licensees continued to use a green shade for even longer. By the way: one of Piaggio‘s specifications was that licensees should usually continue to produce the previous versions for longer, which is why the Italians often had the successors in their range earlier.

The changing headlight

Until the mid-1950s, the headlight on most Vespas was located on the front mudguard, which is why the production series is also called „Faro Basso“. This only changed with the VL series from 1955 onwards, when the manufacturer placed the headlight on the upper part of the handlebars, also called the „Struzzo“, which was integrated into the cast handlebars on subsequent scooter models. Due to the different road traffic regulations, the position of the headlights often differed. For example, the French Acma models always had the lamp in the upper area, while the British licensee Douglas had the lamp fixed in the middle of the legshield of the Vespa.

The different tank sizes

Another important feature by which the different generations of Wideframe frames can be recognised is the tank size. While the first versions had a square tank with a capacity of around 4.5 to 5 litres, the later designs such as the VM or the VL series used larger tanks that protruded more into the top of the frame. The largest version was fitted in the 150 GS, which filled the entire volume of the frame.

Larger tyres - more comfort

Another decisive evolution took place in the area of the wheels. In order to achieve a smoother ride on a long-distance trip, they went from 8 to 10 inch wheels. However, only the 150 GS benefited from the wide-frame versions. An exception was the licence construction from Acma, who used 9-inch tyres on their Vespas. Sport scooters from Piaggio, on the other hand, relied on a multifunctional system that could be used with both types of tyres. While 10-inch wheels were used for longer distances, the smaller 8-inch tyres were used for mountain stages. As a result, the pilots of the time usually carried a spark plug spanner in their boots so that they could change the tyres as quickly as possible. This special feature can also be recognised visually by the many screws in the area of the tyres.

A special model was the Vespa U (the U stands for „Utilità“), of which only 7,000 were produced. In 1953, the special model was intended to appeal to price-conscious customers due to increasing competition. For this purpose, the design was not only simplified visually, but the technology under the bonnet was also reduced to the bare essentials, which made a sales price of around 110 dollars possible. Anyone interested in such a model today, however, has to dig deep into their pockets. Due to the low number of units, this is a popular collector‘s item, which is now even one of the most expensive Vespas ever.

THE IDEAL ENTRY INTO THE WIDEFRAME WORLD OF VESPAS

As there are four series of Wideframe V98 scooters, the price range is relatively wide. As of today (April 2021), anyone wishing

to purchase a V98 in as original a condition as possible should expect to pay between 50,000 and 70,000 euros. Because of this, it is advisable to purchase a cheaper model from the Acma series or other licensees. However, care should be taken that these have a two-channel motor built in. This is not only an inexpensive way to enter the wide-frame world of Vespas, but also a lot of fun when tuning the bike at a later date.

VESPA WIDEFRAME TUNING

Wideframe tuning is certainly becoming more and more popular. Most of the time, the old ladies with the charismatic tubular handlebars slumber in the garage as collector‘s items or are only used for a short ride. There is too little confidence in the old engines, especially for longer rides. In addition, with 2-3 hp engine power, they are simply underpowered for today‘s road traffic.

To remedy this, a small scene of resourceful tinkerers and hobbyists has sprung up around the „Faro Basso“ in recent years. The overflow and timing have been optimised on the original cylinders, pistons have been changed, various types of carburettors have been fitted, etc. The wide-frame motorcycles are generally available in different versions.

Two types: 1-channel and 2-channel engines

For the 1-transfer engine (1-channel) (recognisable from the outside by the exhaust pipe running along the side) there are only a few tuning options: Carburettor kit CP19, air filter, cylinder head CNC and contactless ignition system. The increase in power is nevertheless noticeable. Alternative: Buy a used two-channel engine (approx. 250-300 €) and put the singlechannel engine on the shelf. With the 2-overflow engine (2-channel) (recognisable from the outside by the exhaust pipe running downwards) the result is really impressive. With the right components, the engines achieve an output of 10-14 hp with a powerful 15 Nm of torque. And that‘s enough to swim along in traffic or climb a mountain pass. In the meantime, many products have reached series production readiness and can be easily assembled. Racing cylinders from PINASCO made of aluminium with 160ccm, reinforced crankshafts from TAMENI & SERIE

Pro by Stoffi, carburettor kits based on the POLINI CP models, racing exhaust systems from SIP, maintenance-free electronic 12V ignitions, longer gear ratios, improved clutches and suspension parts open up a whole new horizon for lovers of a tube handlebar Vespa. With the following components, you can turn any Faro Basso into a Daily Rider without losing the charm of the 50s model. All conversions can be retrofitted at any time.

62 JOSH ROGERS

„Vespamania“ is a new format from Piaggio. „Vespa maniacs“ from around the world are visited and featured. This episode features Josh Rogers, president of the Vespa Club of America (VCOA). And the visit to his San Jose hideaway is well worth it, as the man has amassed an impressive Vespa collection over the years. Among them are a 1980 P200, a 1974 Primavera, a GS 150 Cushman, and an SS 180, each of which is enough to make you click your tongue. His favorite, however, is an Ape rickshaw from 1956. And which model does he call his „Holy Grail“? Of course, a Vespa 98 from 1946, one of the oldest Vespas in the world according to the registration in the „Registro Storico“. A real treasure, one can become jealous.

For us Josh Rogers is by no means a stranger, because Ralf and Moritz met him in 2009 on a tour through the USA to the „Amerivespa“ in California. Moritz remembers: „I met Josh for

the first time at the Amerivespa 2009 in Santa Cruz. There stood this almost two-meter guy in front of us. At first I thought he was lost and belonged to the local Harley Club. But after the second sentence at the latest, you just have to like this guy. You immediately notice his passion and enthusiasm for the Vespa.“

A few years later, Moritz was back in the States and met Josh again, „He did a lot for the Vespa scene in the US. He was editor of SCOOT Magazine and is now president of the VCOA.

At his swearing in as president in 2017 in Seattle, I was even able to be there live. Heavily moved and proud, he stood on stage. A gentle giant.“ Today, the VCOA has more than 2,000 members and is the umbrella organization for more than 30 other clubs across the pond. Among them are such illustrious names as: Nashville Snakes, Gem City Rollers, Sonoran Sunriders Scooter Club and Thirty Days Scooter Gang. In the last two years, the „Amerivespa annual rally“ unfortunately had to be cancelled due to Covid-19, but in June 2022 it is firmly scheduled again in Twin City, Minnesota.

The Zugspitze is 2,962 meters high, Mont Blanc 4,808, the base camp „Kala Pattar“ on Mount Everest is still 5,675 meters above sea level, but at 5,883 meters, the Umling La Pass in northwestern India is even a bit higher. It is considered the highest motorable road on earth, trumping a pass in Bolivia. Oxygen levels at this altitude are 50 percent lower than those of us

lowlanders, and in winter temperatures drop to a cozy -40 degrees Celsius. The road was opened in 2017 and leads to the less safe border area of Aksai Chin. Not a place you necessarily want to visit. Unless your name is Misab and you ride a 1994 Bajaj Chetak 150, which is an Indian

Vespa licensed build roughly equivalent to a Vespa 150 Sprint. Just the day the 18-yearold got his drivers license, Misab got on his scooter and tackled the Umling La Pass. With plenty of gas in the spare cans, a lot of optimism and no modifications to his Chetak 150, Misab rode 10,700 km in four months. In the process, he set two unofficial world records: He is the youngest and first rider to climb the Umling La Pass on a

two-stroke. Over gravel and asphalt roads, accompanied by flocks of sheep and army trucks, he made his way to this lofty height in front of the impressive mountain panorama of the Himalayas.

„I love my scooter because I can go anywhere on it. And if there are any problems, they are only mechanical,“ says the geology student. „With a passenger, you can‘t even make the pass on a Royal Enfield Himalayan LS 410, but for me alone on the scooter, it was easy. I can hardly put my happiness into words and have realized a big dream.“

The world‘s first motorcycle from Landsberg?

THE WORLD‘S FIRST MOTORCYCLE FROM LANDSBERG AM LECH?

If you mention the small town of Landsberg am Lech in a conversation, most people only know the prison where such prominent delinquents as Adolf Hitler, Rudolf Heß, Michael Graeter, Karl-Heinz Wildmoser junior and Uli Hoeneß served their sentences for various reasons. Yet the large district town has much more to offer: the historic old town with the town hall worth seeing and the former Ursuline convent.

The city gates, the four-tiered Lech weir, the Mutterturm (mother tower) and up on the „hill“ the former buildings of the Jesuits watch over the approximately 30,000 inhabitants.

But even among them, only a few know that the world‘s first motorized two-wheeler for series production was invented in Landsberg. And what did the Landsberg inventor call his invention, which was patented in Munich in 1894? Exactly: the term „motorcycle“ was born! From Landsberg, a triumphal procession

around the world began, and with the founding of the SIP Scootershop, a circle was closed, so to speak. But to tell the story of the ingenious inventor and the motorcycle, we first have to go in search of clues in our little town.

ON A DISCOVERY TOUR IN LANDSBERG

For only those who stroll very attentively through the historic old town and let their eyes wander over the walls in Herzog-Ernst-Strasse will discover a small plaque at house number

The Hildebrand & Wolfmiller from 1894, developed and built in Landsberg am Lech
68 FIRST MOTORCYCLE

179B that identifies this building as the birthplace of a certain Alois Wolfmüller. The man spent the time from April 22, 1864 to October 03, 1948 on this planet and was, according to the inscription, an aviation pioneer. The plaque does not provide any further information and the inclined visitor has to make his way to Kolpingstraße to uncover another secret of Mr. Wolfmüller. Here you can read that this son of the Lechstadt built the first motorcycle, which is unfortunately not quite correct.

Scholars argue about who deserves the honor of having launched the first motorized twowheeler. Was it the Frenchmen Pierre Michaux and Louis-Guillaume Perreaux with their steam-powered bicycle of 1869? Or was it Gottlieb Daimler, who equipped a wooden two-wheeler with an internal combustion engine in 1885?

The question cannot be answered unequivocally, but the fact is that Alois Wolfmüller from Landsberg am Lech, together with the brothers Heinrich and Wilhelm Hildebrand, and Hans Geisenhof, was issued Patent No. 78553 by the Imperial Patent Office on January 20, 1894. In this document the word „motorcycle“ is mentioned for the first time. The gentlemen around Alois Wolfsmüller succeeded in bringing the first motorcycle to serial production and building it in larger quantities in their factory in Munich. The „Guinness Book of Records“ confirmed this historical fact many years later. So that would be settled and sealed.

Today, SIP Scootershop successfully keeps the two-wheeler tradition alive in Landsberg am Lech by making Vespa and Lambretta riders from all over the world happy with scooter spare parts and accessories. A few kilometers away, the 3C-Carbon-Group has been massproducing HOREX motorcycles since 2017 and is dedicated to the resurrection of this great German brand. So Landsberg am Lech is not just a place where mad dictators and football-crazy tax dodgers peered through barred windows, but the town where two-wheelers learned to walk. It was here that the „Hildebrand

& Wolfmüller“ motorcycle was born on the drawing board. From January 1894 to October 1895, between 800 and 2000 units (sources are uncertain) were built. Some even under license in France with the name „Pétrolette“. But who was this Landsberger Alois Wolfmüller and how did he get the idea to equip a bicycle with a motor?

A DANGEROUS PROTOTYPE

Above all, he was a brilliant student who mastered the Volksschule and Realschule in Landsberg with flying colors. According to Wikipedia, his teacher is said to have said the following sentence to him: „One day you will either become a big lump or something else really great.“ Well, as we know today, he decided against a career as a crook. Instead, he learned in his father‘s workshop and then went on the road through Germany as a mechanic and turner.

At this time, Heinrich Hildebrand (1855 to 1928) founded the magazine Radfahr-Humor und Radfahr-Chronik. Together with his brother, he developed an unsuccessful steam wheel, which, however, is now in the London Science Museum. In 1892, he commissioned Alois Wolfmüller to design a bicycle with a gasoline engine. In 1893, a first prototype, which can now be seen in the German Museum, rolled along the roads, which were still very bumpy at the time. During the test run, there were injuries, a mechanic lost an arm and Wolfmüller had to return to the workbench. The next test runs took place in Bamberg on January 18 and 19, 1894, but the motorcycle only moved backwards. It was not until the end of the month that Wolfmüller‘s friend and mechanic Hans Geisenhof rode 100 laps on Landsberger Allee in Munich. The patent finally refers to the two-wheeler with petroleum as a „motorcycle“. On March 1, 1894, the „Hildebrand & Wolfmüller“ went into production in Munich.

It was a water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke engine. We quote from the documents of the

German Museum: „Technically, the motorcycle is intelligently designed by Hildebrand and Wolfmüller and in some details ahead of its time. The heart of the design is an unsprung frame made of four horizontal steel tubes. The engine is suspended between these. Four tubes lead from the engine to the steering head. An advance over the previous two-wheeled designs by Daimler and Michaux or Perreaux was the pneumatic tires, which ensured a certain level of ride comfort despite the lack of suspension. The motorcycle, which weighed 60 kg and had a speed of almost 40 km/h, was braked by a block brake on the front wheel. Here, a brake shoe presses on the tread of the tire. This design is extremely wear-intensive and not very effective. The two-cylinder, four-stroke engine has a displacement of 1488 cc and produces 2.5 hp at 240 rpm. Ignition is via a glow-tube ignition system that was already obsolete at the time. The engine is water-cooled, but the water is not circulated by a pump - as is common today - but evaporates gradually through the engine heat. The water for this evaporative cooling is carried in the rear fender, which is designed as a reservoir.“

RISE AND FALL

The young company „Hildebrand und Wolfmüller, Motor-Fahrrad-Fabrik München“ is beating the advertising drum for its motorcycle and sends brochures all over the world. 850 workers create in the factories and between eight and ten machines leave the factory halls every day. For advertising purposes, Wolfmüller even took part in two races, finishing third in the Esperimento di corsa di veicoli automotori in Italy in 1895. There were four other participants, two of whom dropped out. The average speed was a rapid 15.5 km/h. He was unable to finish the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race at all.

Disaster was brewing, as customers were unhappy with the motorcycle‘s life-threatening ignition and lack of reliability. „Interesting as a toy, unsuitable as a means of transport,“ wrote a contemporary journalist, heralding the end of the „Hildebrand & Wolfmüller“. Litigation for damages and overly expensive production put an end to the venture of the two pioneers. In October 1895, production came to an end and

FIRST MOTORCYCLE 69
„FEW PEOPLE KNOW THAT THE WORLD‘S FIRST MOTORIZED TWO-WHEELER FOR MASS PRODUCTION WAS INVENTED IN LANDSBERG.“ IT WAS CHRISTENED „MOTORCYCLE“

on November 2 of the same year, bankruptcy proceedings were opened. Today, around ten machines can be admired in museums all over the world and at auctions they fetch prices of over 100,000 euros. There are currently even replicas and a small series.

Alois Wolfmüller is described as a morose contemporary who had few friends and preferred to work alone. He did so from then on and devoted himself to his true passion: aviation. He made written contact with the pioneer of the skies at the time: Otto Lilienthal. A fruitful correspondence developed over many years. Alois Wolfmüller remained lonely and poor, but his designs and concepts have endured to this day. His flying machines can be seen at the Flugwerft Schleißheim and a branch of the Deutsches Museum.

In 1940, he tries unsuccessfully for the last time to apply for a patent. He lives with a certain Edmunde Schauberger in Oberstdorf - what role the lady played in his life has not been handed down. Alois Wolfmüller died in 1948, leaving behind no worldly goods apart

from his manifold ideas and designs. The man who brought the motorcycle to series production could not profit from it materially.

WOLFMÜLLER‘S HEIRS

At SIP Scootershop we occasionally think of this two-wheeled pioneer and consider ourselves lucky that we, quasi as his heirs, can be successful in Landsberg am Lech. After all, what is a Vespa but the Italian version of a dream that originated in the mind and workshop of Alois Wolfmüller and became reality for a few months in Munich factory halls?

And this dream lives on: Today, the „birthplace of the motorcycle“ Landsberg am Lech is the navel of the world for many Vespa riders and enthusiasts. At SIP Scootershop we get visitors from literally all over the world and have made contacts from Argentina to Taiwan through

the Vespas. And even the disgruntled Alois Wolfmüller would certainly have watched with shining eyes when up to 2,000 positively twowheeled maniacs ride together, celebrate and talk shop at the SIP Open Day and Joyride. His inventions and ingenuity are the basis for the entire business field of SIP Scootershop and its more than one hundred employees. What once began as the project of a cranky tinkerer in Salzgasse 136 is attracting scooter riders to Landsberg am Lech more than 120 years later. Alois Wolfmüller may have died a poor man, but he made the world richer for motorcycle and scooter riders.

By Vespa through Germany in 1965

Our friend Paul Hart from the „Veteran Vespa Club“ sent us a story that is so beautiful and nostalgic that we have to share it with you. In 1965 the Swede Erik Anestad made a tour through Germany with two friends on a Vespa and a Lambretta.

72 THROUGH GERMANY

Paul writes: „Spending too much time on Flickr looking at photos of old scooters, I came across this excellent album taken by Erik Anestad during his trip from home in Sweden to Germany and back again. Below is an English translation of a letter he sent home to his parents while on the trip. Thanks so much to Erik Anestad for allowing me to share this!“

INTRODUCTION

TEXT AND PHOTOS BY ERIK ANESTAD

I had been given an internship at a ship forwarding company in Hamburg for the summer of 1965. I had also received a scholarship from the Swedish Board of Trade to finance the whole thing. My best friend from Hedemora high school, Per Forsling, had at the same time got an internship with a forest company in Austria. We decided to go together on our scooters down through Germany. Our mutual best friend, Ingemar Melin, wanted to come along and so the three of us rode on our two scooters. We started together from Norberg in early June.

After a while, when we had parted, I wrote the following letter to mom and dad. When Gärd and I cleaned up mother‘s house when she moved to the elderly home, we found this letter in the secretaire where she had saved it for all the years.

THE LETTER SAID: FRIDAY EVENING, BEFORE GÖTTINGEN, 11. JUNI 1965

„They say that when someone takes a trip, they can tell stories, and since it‘s been a few days now since I left, there‘s a lot to tell. I am about 20 kilometers from Göttingen, on the way to Goslar. The pub I am sitting in is an old, run-down village pub, and around me sit the old men of the village, playing cards and drinking beer. Also, they speak an unintelligible language, but I better tell it from the beginning. On the way to Olle (my brother) everything went well, but of course I was scatterbrained as usual, and when we did the tire check in Fagersta, my camera bag with my traveler‘s

checks stayed there. When we got to Stjärnvik, I noticed this and immediately called Fagersta. Sure, the bag and checks were still there, but I now had to turn around and pick them up. Then I stashed the checks somewhere else so I would always have them with me. In the evening Olle served meat fondue and we had a nice time.

On Tuesday we started at 8:30 and everything went well until we arrived in Ljungby where something happened: We saw a dead man in the ditch, but there was nothing we could do, so we notified the police and continued the trip. Shortly after, Per‘s scooter started making a big noise. Then it stopped, and so did we. At first we thought something had happened to the piston, but we soon found out it was the fan rim scraping the protective cover. After a lot of back and forth, we got the cover off and were able to tap it out so that fan rim wasn‘t touching the cover. But why the fan ring suddenly touched the cover, none of us could understand.

Snack at the roadside for our swedish friends

As we passed Markaryd, we realized that it was high time to buy food for the evening, so we drove like a bat out of hell to Höör, where we arrived shortly before 6 pm. We then found out that the store had been closed since 5:30pm, but there were still people in the store, so we were able to buy something to eat. Finding Eje and Kaj‘s [my cousins] apartment in Trelleborg was not difficult with the help of the map, and there I made myself an omelet and meatballs with fresh potatoes.

The ferry ride to Travemünde went well, but when we left in the morning, my rear tire was flat. So I changed the tire in Travemünde. When we wanted to drive towards Goslar, it had started to rain and we were quite late, so we took the Autobahn towards Göttingen. By driving on the autobahn, we saved a lot of time. About 20 to 30 miles south of Goslar on our way to Fulda we found an inn. As we sat there eating, a drunken old man came up to us, sat down and started talking unintelligibly, but the more we talked to him, the more clearly he spoke and then you could understand what he was saying.

As the evening went on, it became so clear that he had been a soldier for 16 years, from 1929 to 1945, and in a POW camp in Russia, but what he was living on now we never understood. He bought us beers and then a cherry liqueur (or schnapps), which we didn‘t understand until the next morning when we paid the bill. We left him money for two beers and hoped he would get them the next night. That day, the ride was painful for our butts, but we went to Rothenburg, where we checked out the town. (I forgot to mention that it started raining so hard on the highway that we stopped under a bridge where we sat for about half an hour, during which there had apparently been an accident on the other side. Police cars, tow trucks and an ambulance arrived. As we

drove off, we saw a truck lying on its roof and facing the wrong way, with a small former car underneath. We then spent about an hour and a half looking at Rothenburg and then continued on towards Nuremberg.

When we filled up in Ausbach, they told us that it had been raining for three days and the roads to Austria were flooded. When we told them that we hadn‘t had a drop of rain lately, they didn‘t believe us. When we had been driving for about ten minutes, it started raining like crazy. We then wanted to stop at an Aral gas station, but before I could, my Vespa stopped. It wouldn‘t start anymore, and I feared that the ignition coil had gotten wet. I did at least get a spark at the plug, but it wouldn‘t start again. We then asked at the gas station where we could spend the night, and they told us where to go. While I was unpacking my stuff, they called an inn and asked if there was room for us, which there was. Then one of the guys drove me, while Per and Ingemar

followed us on Pelle‘s scooter, who also didn‘t want to drive anymore. But it was downhill all the way, so it was no problem to get to the inn. Very wet and grateful, we were able to settle into a very clean, neat and nice inn where we ate and drank beer in the evening and got very full. Here in Southern Germany the beer is tastier and served in bigger glasses than in Northern Germany, but da beer was also very good and cheap, at least I think when it costs a German Mark for 0,25 L.

This morning both scooters started very nicely and well-behaved, which had failed yesterday because of the too high humidity. The hydrometer showed over 100%, but we were on dry land anyway. We parted in Heilsbronn. Per and Ingemar continued towards Austria, while I went back to Hamburg. From Würzburg I took a beautiful road towards Vogelsberg, high mountains and deep valleys. Then I continued towards Kassel, but I found an on-ramp to the highway and took it to Hannover to gain some

time. With a leaky tire and a puncture on the spare wheel, I continued on my merry way. I found a company that sold scooter parts, but they didn‘t have a suitable tube, but referred me to the largest tire company in Göttingen. They didn‘t have a tube either, but sent me to a company that was on the way to Hanover. So I drove in the direction of Kassel, but discovered my mistake and instead wound my way back through the whole city towards Hanover, where I finally found a company that had closed for the day. However, an employee was still there and was able to help me, so I got a new hose. Stupid

as I am, I didn‘t change the tube right away, but kept trying to find an inn on the way to Goslar, because the air in the tire didn‘t escape that fast. The only answer I got everywhere was „all occupied“, and in the end there was no more air in the tire and no gas station nearby. I changed the tube and had to hitchhike to the nearest gas station to pump up the tire and then back, but it was fine. Finding a room for the night was not easy at eight o‘clock, but I finally found one.

The main thing was that I had a roof over my head. As I write this, I had dinner, drank three glasses of beer as usual, and realized that the quality of a room and the food can be different. It is surprisingly difficult to judge rooms from the outside and sometimes you have to take what you get.

HERE IN SOUTHERN GERMANY THE BEER IS TASTIER AND SERVED IN LARGER GLASSES

Tomorrow I‘m going to Goslar and then Hamburg, which should go well if there are no problems with the Vespa. It has run perfectly except for the problems mentioned above that had nothing to do with the mechanics. I have now done over 1,100 miles and my butt is pretty sore so I am taking more breaks and I am sleeping more soundly. I understand if you are having great difficulty understanding my letter, but this way you will get something out of it longer. But it was very long anyway [seven handwritten pages], and now you know more about what happened during my trip. Could you please send me a copy of my report cards so I can look at them. It is now after 10 o‘clock and it is time to go to bed.

Greetings from Erik.“

POST-SKRIPTUM

Per and I had agreed to meet in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance after we finished our internships. The night before I left Hamburg, my colleagues at the company took me to an amusement park, where I lost the key to the scooter. I only noticed this the next morning.

After considerable problems, I finally found a locksmith who was able to drill out the lock and I was able to get on my way. After a „wild“ ride south, Per and I met at the right place at the right time. We then continued north to Kiel, where together with our scooters we boarded a ship that took us to Västerås on Lake Mälaren.

There is no letter from this part, but one incident is still in my memory: We mostly took smaller roads in Germany to avoid the fast traffic on the Autobahn, and at one point we were driving at full speed (70-75 km/h)

through a small village and were stopped by a policeman for speeding. We told him we hadn‘t seen any speed signs, and he explained how the signs worked. In the end he imposed a fine of 3.50 DM for „speeding“. I had kept the fine notice for a long time, but it has since disappeared. Sad.

Tüv Testing Flyscreen

NEW: SPORTY SIP PORDOI FLYSCREEN, SUITABLE FOR VARIOUS VESPA MODELS - CLASSIC AND MODERN.

Deciding in favour of a windshield on the vehicle does not at the same time mean entering retirement age. Especially on the Vespa, a windshield offers enormous aerodynamic advantages. The only drawback is that commercially available windshields and even the smaller flyscreens simply do not look good

and the Vespa is then quickly discredited as a retirement vehicle. With the SIP PORDOI Flyscreen this does not happen, because here not only value is placed on function, but also on the appearance.

What are the advantages of SIP PORDOI Flyscreen?

• With black tinted or clear lens

• Optional black or silver holder

• With TÜV

Depending on taste, we offer the discs in black tinted or clear variant. Matching this, of course, the brackets with silver / chrome elements or simply black, the installation of the brackets and discs is similarly simple as with

the PIAGGIO Cruiser discs. To top it all off, the windshields are TÜV tested and can be used legally in road traffic without having to worry about the expiration of the operating license. The disc itself is made of PMMA polymethyl methacrylate, this is particularly resistant to weathering as well as light damage from scratches / bumps and thus ideally suited for daily use on the scooter.

Purchase recommendation - Our SIP-TIP:

• Perfect in combination with our SIP lamp rings

• Strong chemicals should not be used for cleaning. Strong chemicals should not be used for cleaning. Wash with soapy water and finish with our microfiber cloths.

CONCLUSION: IF YOU LIKE IT SPORTY AND DISCREET, WILL BE WELL SERVED WITH OUR SIP PORDOI WINDSHIELD.

English photographer Peter Wilson has been working for many years on a high-profile photographic project featuring portraits of people who live either in or around the small Bavarian town on the Lech. Some of the Landsbergers portrayed have deep roots in the area, others have just arrived - for whatever reason.

Alex and Ralf had been riding Vespas for fun since the 80‘s. In 1994 the two friends, unable to fine-tune their scooters to their satisfaction, started designing and manufacturing their own parts. Their innovations were

enthusiastically welcomed by other scooter enthusiasts and seeing a possible market they turned their hobby into their business. SIP (Scooter Innovative Parts) was such an immediate success that after only two years larger premises had to be found. Ever-increasing business forced them, only one year later, to once again rent even more space. Milan - Landsberg - Tokyo with old Vespa

86 MILAN - TOKYO

Already on May 18th we reported about Fabio Cofferati, who wants to repeat the historic feat of Roberto Patrignani in 1964: a ride from Milan to Tokyo, where he will present a trophy of the Vespa Club d‘Europe to the Olympic Committee, on the occasion of the 2021 Summer Olympics.

MILAN - TOKYO 87
88 MILAN - TOKYO
Cheerful and colorful is the Vespa from Fabio

Fabio left Milan as planned on June 12th and spent his first night in Chur, Switzerland. A day later, on June 14th, his visit to SIP Scootershop was on the route and we were from noon in joyful anticipation. The hours passed, from Fabio no trace or message. When we already started to worry, SIP employee Luigi reported around 4:45 p.m. that Fabio would probably arrive in about an hour. He had been sitting at Markus André Mayer‘s in Waltenhofen for just too long with schnitzel and beer.

At 5:20 p.m., he finally rolled into our yard and was met by Luigi. Over espresso and apple spritzer, Fabio told us about his first two days, which had largely gone smoothly. Only the speedometer was a bit twitchy and the Vespa 150 VBB2, built in 1963, was promptly pushed into the workshop, where the mechanics

André, Jesco and Luigi took care of the matter together with Fabio. With combined forces and skill, the speedometer cable was replaced and soon the installed SIP speedometer was fully functional again.

I HAD NO IDEA WHAT A BEAUTIFUL TOWN LANDSBERG IS

A glance at the clock made it clear that a continuation of the journey was no longer to be thought of. So SIP boss Alex gave the „instruction“ to get Fabio a hotel and to reserve a table

at the local Italian in the „Trattoria“. A little later we sat together with Fabio in wonderfully mild temperatures, in the shade of the Landsberg Bayertor, with cold drinks and Italian delicacies and told not only scooter stories. The evening ended harmoniously and Fabio found well-deserved rest in the guesthouse „Zweite Heimat“, directly at the historic city wall of the Lechstadt. His Vespa, weighing 160 kilograms with luggage, spent the night safely in a friend‘s garage. Fabio summed up the day: „I had no idea what a beautiful town Landsberg is, I could easily spend my vacation here. And the reception at and the help from the people at SIP Scootershop was just warm and outstanding. I will now call my wife, post the day on Facebook and then sleep wonderfully.“

New high performance shock absorbers for the long Vespa tour The luggage for thousands of kilometers needs to be stowed

NEW SIP SHOCK ABSORBERS

Bright sunshine the next morning. Not a cloud was in the blue Bavarian sky and the mood of departure was marred only by the fact that the shock absorbers of the Vespa front and rear were no longer in the best condition. Again the instruction went out from the SIP captains Alex and Ralf to repair this circumstance immediately. So back into the workshop! Jesco, Luigi and Fabio installed new SIP PERFORMANCE rear shock absorbers with external reservoir and also SIP PERFORMANCE shock absorbers for the front. Now the Vespa was really ready for the long ride to the east, which promises to be exciting.

Why? Well, Fabio still doesn‘t have a visa to enter Russia due to the Corona pandemic. His plan is to go to Latvian Riga and get a permit

there with the help of the Italian embassy. We directly contacted our friends from the Vespa Clubs St. Petersburg and Moscow and put them in contact with Fabio. Maybe they can help, we keep all fingers crossed. Fabio himself is the serenity itself: „I heard that the restrictions for Russia should change in the next days and I put my hope on it. What should I do! I will ride as far as I can.“

Whether and when he will arrive in Tokyo is beside the point. For Fabio, the journey really is the destination and the first two days were already rich in highlights. After a last refreshment in the SIPERIA, he sat down on his Vespa around 2:30 p.m., waved goodbye to us and disappeared on the horizon shimmering in the heat. Somewhat wistfully we looked after him. We wish him and his Vespa all the best.

THIS WONDERFUL TRIP BY FABIO IS A GREAT INSPIRATION FOR YOUR OWN TOURS WITH THE VESPA, EVEN IF IT‘S JUST TO THE LAKE GARDA AND BACK.

scooter riders help SIP AID

Why do some people feel so bad and we feel so good? We don‘t know either. But we do know that others have to struggle with hunger, homelessness or flood disasters, while we lack nothing. We at SIP Scootershop have a job that we enjoy, we have enough free time to work on our scooters and we always have a few euros left over for a pizza and a beer. The pictures of the floods in East Germany in 2002 and in Asia in 2005 deeply moved all of us here, which is why we also spontaneously decided to make a donation. And that‘s when the idea of SIP-Aid was born. What is behind it? We want to donate a part of our earnings to charitable causes. We regularly donate a not insignificant amount to SOS Kinderdorf e.V., ARCHE Germany, Humedica or the Red Cross, to name but a few.

Here, a number of retired doctors are not improving their handicap on the golf course, but the health care system in Cameroon and Tanzania. Without organizational overhead, with a lot of heart and commitment, the help arrives on site where it is most urgently needed. Our

was focused on smallframe tuning under the inventive and genius eye of Trevor Howe, of Project 13 Racing. However, after returning to Australia, Sandy saw a potential and growth that was untapped. He recognised a gap in the Australian market and set about building a company known for creating world class custom builds and vintage Vespa and Lambretta restorations.

Supported and adhered by customers nationwide, Scooter Meccanica simply delivers unrivalled „exceptional service, custom dreams and speed machines“. In fact, that’s the company motto. A motto proudly created and powered by its Owner and Founder, Sandy Symeonides.

AUSTRALIA‘S LEADING SPECIALIST WORKSHOP FOR VESPAS AND LAMBRETTAS

Sandy had always dreamed of creating an epic workshop and showroom to highlight the artistry and magnificence of the Vespa and Lambretta. With this vision in mind, Sandy has curated a new landmark workshop in the edgy industrial suburb of Alexandria, Sydney Australia.

Everywhere you look in the workshop, there is something special and authentic to admire.

From the rows of SS180s, Vegas, a beautifully restored TV200, or to GS 150s and 160s; the space is as much an art gallery as it is a workshop. And the best vantage point? Sitting in the vintage leather sofa that Sandy inherited from his first boss, Big Joe! Don’t forget to look up, there is a cathedral of Vespas and Lambrettas hanging from the original industrial ceiling, intermixed with chandeliers, motor antiques and plants.

THE STORY BEGINS IN LONDON

Sandy has been a loyal customer of SIP Scootershop since the late nineties. While he was living in East London, the SIP catalogue became his scooter bible, and he was one of the first to have purchased the famous SIP fiberglass race seat from Ralf and Alex. Back in the day, Sandy

SANDY HAS BEEN A LOYAL SIP CUSTOMER SINCE THE LATE NINETIES

With his expert team behind him, including head restorer Mark, Sandy’s personal scooter collection and workmanship speaks for itself, he is most proud of his epic Nitros 1974 Vespa Sprint. Amongst his latest commissions, Scooter Meccanica this year has restored a string of Faro Bassos, SS90s and the stunning Lambretta TV175 series 1 (now owned by a world famous „Lambrettista“). Drawing to completion, is also a concourse 1961 Vespa 400, right-hand drive! Now that is something spectacular to check out, with only 80 built, it maybe one-ofa-handful in the world.

SCOOTER MECCANICA AND SIP SCOOTERSHOP

Since opening, SIP Scootershop and Scooter Meccanica have partnered to make Sandy‘s dream a reality. SIP has stood by Scooter Meccanica through all the ups and downs. Built on a foundation of respect and friendship, SIP has always provided the support needed to deliver custom work and restorations on time and on budget. Sandy confidently says, „SIP has provided Scooter Meccanica and the Australian market with new opportunities, not only to service their classic and modern scooters, but also to deliver the best quality parts to Australia in less than three days.

This gives me and my team the confidence that we can not only keep our scooters running, but also drive them safely and reliably on the challenging Australian roads. What more could the Australian market and I ask for?“ Sandy has watched the scooter scene in Australia flourish and grow over the past 20 years. And that‘s no accident. Sandy is an avid enthusiast who puts his heart and soul into building fast, reliable and meticulously

restored scooters. He is an active member of the Australian scooter scene and president of the Lambretta Club of Australia. One of his fondest memories is riding his 1963 Vespa GS160 around various parts of Australia every year with chief restorer Mark and his partner Fleur in the Classic Scooter Mille.

In his spare time, Sandy‘s involvement includes the first White Ribbon Ride Out to stop violence against women and violence in all its forms. He was an ambassador for the Distinguished Gentleman‘s Ride and runs a soup kitchen to help feed the less fortunate in Sydney. He also employs and trains political asylum seekers and provides them with startup opportunities for further employment.

Winston makes music

For a long time it was quiet around our „in-house“ rapper Christian Seidl aka Winston. After his last album „waschecht“ and the single „Endorphin“ released some time later on Spotify, Amazon & iTunes & Co. rumors say that a new single will soon delight our ears.

He does not want to reveal much yet, so it remains exciting. At SIP Scootershop Christian is almost an old hand.

He has been responsible for the Germanspeaking wholesale trade since 2007 - so it‘s quite possible that many a customer has experienced his very exclusive Winston performance on the phone.

Christian is also involved in the organization of SIP events. Of course, he is also a scooterist in his personal time: he rides a 1976 Vespa Sprint Veloce with a PX 200 engine and 211 Malossi sport cylinder with reedvalve induction.

With heart and mind for the old tin. The heart of the 2-stroke riders beats here immediately higher. The store itself is clear and the product details are well described. Likewise, the videos of SIP have answered many a question for me and with some handles I was faster at the goal.

It is obvious that the girls and guys (and other sexes) at SIP do their job with passion and expertise for the sheet metal!

HOLGER K. GERMANY

Super selection and great customer service. Had accidentally ordered an item twice and the customer service has responded to my request promptly and friendly, changed the order and still shipped the item super fast! Great! Back again every time!

PATRICK

Express Service. Ordered a few parts on Wednesday morning with SIP Express Service. An hour later, the package was already packed and Thursday with me.

That is already top! Now, unfortunately, there was a wrong size nozzle ... can happen, because the things look at first glance all the same. So called, immediately reached someone. Very nice employee: „No problem, we will send the correct part now“. And one day later, the shipment actually arrived with the correct nozzle.

Conclusion: Something can always go wrong, but if the „after sales“ support works as well as it does at SIP, it can‘t be any better. Many thanks!!!

Scooter Zen from Japan

The short film „Metaverse“ by Japanese director and filmmaker Hiroshi Kondo makes a swarm out of individuals that seem to move willy-nilly in one direction.

Individual scooter riders dissolve, many faces become one, and big city life becomes a meditative experience. Accompanied by a

hypnotic soundtrack by DJ Hi-C, this short film unfolds its very own maelstrom. Kondo shot in the streets of Taiwan and later reworked the footage in the studio into a multi-layered experience. Let him speak with his own words:

A crowd moving in one direction. People who flow in a moment. A scene where the difference with other people disappears and looks uniform. There are many different kinds of life there. You can feel invisible energy when you see a large mass of individuals.I set myself in the Streets

of Taiwan, and I multilayered a lot of time to create a new timeline that reflects individuals.

BE SURE TO CHECK IT OUT. SCOOTER ZEN FOR RELAXATION.

Quartermile.App for iOS

How fast is your vehicle over a quarter mile or from 0 to 100 km/h? Or over a self-determined distance or, or, or ... with the Quartermile.App you can answer these questions and more! The Quartermile.App uses the sensors and GPS of your iPhone to give you a precise picture of the performance of your vehiclewhether it‘s a scooter, car or motorcycle. No additional receivers or antennas are needed!

Thanks to a clear design and an automatic start, you can fully concentrate on the road and still have all the important values of your ride in view.

AND THIS IS HOW SIMPLE OUR QUARTERMILE APP WORKS

In the Quartermile.App you can currently choose between two modes:

• In Drag Race mode, you can test how long it takes you to cover a set distance and what the top speed is at the finish.

• In Acceleration mode you record how fast the target speed is reached - just as you like, with a standing start or while driving with a flying start.

You want to record several laps on a race track? Be patient, it‘s already in the works! Also, more features are planned: social sharing, high scores, clubs, charts and more! If the app for iOS proves successful and enjoys great popularity, there is nothing to stop it being implemented for Android devices.

THIS IS HOW EASY YOU TAKE A MEASUREMENT WITH QUARTERMILE.APP IN DRAG RACE MODE:

1. Drive to the start line

2. Position your iPhone for maximum GPS reception and in a place where it will be safe and quiet while recording

3. Start the run - your iPhone will calibrate automatically

4. Recording starts automatically with the first acceleration of your vehicle

Quartermile App

5. Your position, current speed and progress are clearly displayed

6. Complete your run by reaching the specified distance

Now you can analyze your performance using various statistics such as the G-forces, your maximum and average speed as well as wind and weather. Not satisfied with your ride? Back to the start, try again!

ATTENTION: Please note that an iPhone alone cannot replace expensive measurement equipment from motorsport. With the Quartermile.App we want to give you a simple and comparable tool, which you can use always and as simple as possible. And the basic functions are free of charge in every mode!

VERIFY THE EFFICIENCY OF ENGINE TUNING AND PERFORMANCE

The app has a nice side feature: finally you can objectively check the effectiveness of engine tuning work such as adjusting the ignition, changing the carburetor setting, different exhaust system, etc.. You don‘t see absolute performance in the Quartermile app but by comparing before and after you can judge very well which engine changes have a positive effect. Almost a small pocket dynamometer.

FOR SCOOTER, MOTORCYCLE, CAR AND OTHER VEHICLES

Quartermile.App is made to support a wide range of vehicles - whether they have two, four or eight wheels. As long as it drives

106 QUARTERMILE APP

and your iPhone has GPS reception, you can use Quartermile.App for recording. With the free version, you can test all modes with default values! With our one-time in-app purchase you unlock all other values.

Please remember to obey the traffic laws and other applicable laws and to use the Quartermile.App only on restricted areas, in compliance with the laws and rules applicable there.

NOTE: We have noticed that on older devices the values differ more than on new iPhones. This is only a difference of a few meters, but we would still like to inform you about it, should you be surprised. We are also working on improvements in data accuracy by addressing all of the iPhone‘s sensors. This data is filtered and constantly improved. Other tech-

niques using OBD2 and external GPS antennas are under development and testing. All updates and improvements will of course be free of charge. Just try the Quartermile.App for free and give us feedback in the app about your measurements and what features or improvements you would like to see. Write to feedback@quartermile.app. Of course, we would also appreciate a positive review!

HAVE FUN AND ENJOY YOUR RIDE!

We place great emphasis on data protection and registration is not necessary. If you still want to do this, you can use „Login with Apple“ and never have to transmit your personal data. Even with the cloud backup via „Login with Apple“, the login can be transferred anonymously.
