MORE THAN JUST RIDING PLEASURE.

Along with the cylinder and crankshaft, the variomatic is the heart of every automatic engine. It not only determines the shifting behaviour and torque, but also has a significant influence on the smoothness and top speed of CVT-driven engines. By replacing the standard variator with the SIP PERFORMANCE Sport Variokit, you quickly get a noticeably better power output and improved pull of the scooter.

Dear scooter riders!

It‘s been 30 years since we founded SIP Scootershop in a garage. The first goods were stored between Alex‘s father‘s beehives. In the absence of employees, we took the parcels to the post office ourselves on a Vespa. Those were the days ...

A lot has happened in the past three decades: We‘ve made a lot of right decisions and a few wrong ones. We have met people who have become friends. We have been able to look at the topic of “scooters” from many different angles. There were exhausting moments when we sat in front of the keyboard in the cold former barracks in Erpftinger Straße at two o‘clock in the morning, wearing jackets and gloves, and came up with descriptive texts for the next catalog. There were moments of great happiness, for example on road trips with friends and colleagues, when we arrived at the seaside after 1000 km of driving, with road dirt on our faces,

IMPRINT

and toasted with an ice-cold beer. We laughed, pondered, celebrated and mourned together.

In the future, we would also like to manage the balancing act that has been important to us over the last 30 years: on the one hand, to be an efficient, modern company and, on the other, to be an authentic, honest family business. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our employees for their commitment and passion. We would also like to thank all our customers for their trust and loyalty to our brand over the years. Without you, there would be no SIP Scootershop. We hope to meet as many of you as possible in person this year on May 18 at our big open day “Festival of 30 Years Performance & Style”. Here‘s to the next 30 years!

Have fun and an accident-free scooter season Ralf & Alex, SIP Scootershop

17th Vespa Giro dei Tre Mari Bari – Albania

The Giro dei Tre Mari (Tour of the Three Seas) has a long history. In 1953, at the instigation of the Agnelli family, it was brought to life and held as a competitive event. During our research, we found an article by Ilse Thoure from Roller Revue No. 6 from 1953, which makes very enjoyable reading. Six German male and female riders were at the start at that time and it was definitely a competition to be taken seriously. After the last Giro in 1964, interest in the race waned and it was in danger of being forgotten. If it hadn‘t been for a certain Vespa Club from Bari that revived this tradition in 2004.

WITH THE VESPA TO ALBANIA

The enthusiasm was great and late registrations had to be turned away again and again, because the number of participants was limited to 150 riders. The tour along the coasts of the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian and Thyrrhenian Seas lost its tough competitive character, but became a long ride on a Vespa or Lambretta to discover new areas including gastronomy and culture. Five years ago, the first Special Edition took place: the Giro dei Tre Mari led to Albania. The tour was so popular that there was a new edition in 2023. And when Maurizio De Pasquale, President of the Vespa Club Bari, invited a delegation from the SIP Scootershop to take part, we didn‘t have to think twice. I was immediately hooked, because I had never been to Albania before. So I got my Vespa

Rally 200 going and recruited André (GS 160) and Fabi (PX 200) from the SIP Scootershop and my friend Thomas (Motovespa). Lukas from Abgedreht was given a Vespa GTS 300, which he extensively retrofitted with cameras, cameras and other high-tech stuff. The adventure could begin. And then, on 29 May, it was off to Bari, Italy, to take the ferry to Durrës, Albania. At the port in Bari, we were first impressed by how the Vespa Club Bari had organised this Giro. Everything went like clockwork. We were divided into small groups of “squadras”, given

a thick road book with all the information, start numbers, a sim card for Albania and all kinds of goodies. Exemplary! Then we embarked and experienced a great sunset on board the ferry with a magnificent view of the sea and the coast. The next morning, the 150 participants went ashore with their scooters in Durrës, Albania.

TUESDAY: ON TO LAKE OHRID

We headed purposefully for a bar at the harbour for coffee and a hearty breakfast. In the meantime, the first squadras went to the official start and at some point we also saddled up our Vespas and headed towards Pogradec, on the southern shore of Lake Ohrid.

ITALY

We rode on small roads that were in surprisingly good shape and got a first impression of the wild landscape. At the end of the drivers‘ field were two so-called “broom wagons”, which offered help in case of need. To say it in advance: we were spared from them. Man and machine held out.

The lake itself is located in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Nature and Culture. It belongs mostly to Macedonia, is one of the oldest lakes on earth and up to 288 metres deep. Our hotel in Pogradec was right on the shore of this body of water and we spent the rest of the day exploring the charming town, enjoying excellent food, tasting cold drinks and greeting fellow travellers from England, Italy and France. Among them were old acquaintances like Sticky, Michele and Dean from Casa Performance and Roberto from Barone Racing.

WEDNESDAY: ON THE VESPA TO MACEDONIA

First thing in the morning we were taken over by Albanian radio and television, because the Giro seems to be a big deal and is also promoted by the Ministry of Culture. I gave a few interviews and when the media hustle and bustle was over, we decided to head north, always along the lake shore, to enter Macedonia at the Kjafasan border crossing. The landscape

is wild, tourism is not yet widespread and the lake offered a constantly picturesque backdrop. Finally, the arrival in the small town of Ohrid, with about 40,000 inhabitants the largest settlement on the lake. We had a look at the pretty old town, dined extensively and drove back to our hotel in Pogradec towards evening. Albania‘s cuisine is very Balkanoriented. Lots of meat, fresh salads and spicy cheese.

THURSDAY: IN THE CAPITAL

On the partly familiar route, we had a big destination: Tirana, the capital of Albania. We reached the metropolis in the late afternoon and I was soon reminded of Athens. The city is extremely lively and vibrant. Lots of bars, pubs and restaurants, and a colourful hustle and bustle on the streets. Moreover, the Albanians seem to have a preference for pimped-out limousines with the star, because you see them on every corner. Tirana is no longer as exotic as the other parts of the country. The flair of

western capitalism blows unchecked through the streets. We immersed ourselves in the hustle and bustle and spent a happy evening in the capital.

FRIDAY: ON THE TRAIL OF SKANDERBEG

Actually, the Albanian folk hero was called George Kastrioti, but the vernacular reverently calls him “Skanderbeg”. The man rendered outstanding services to the country from 1423 until his death in 1468, and was named a “fighter of Christianity” by the Pope because he stood his ground against the Ottomans on several occasions. A famous fortress and Skanderbeg museum in the small town of Kruja were visited on Friday, where there were all kinds of historical things to marvel at. The organisers had also organised a lunch on site, which we enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere before the return journey to Tirana.

In the late afternoon, there was a big train station on the central Skanderbeg Square in

Tirana. The Vespa Fanatics Tirana and other clubs had invited and scooter fans from Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and elsewhere came. With the participants of the Giro, there were about 800 scooters on the square and finally, in the presence of unknown celebrities from politics and culture, the parade started through the capital. A seemingly endless band of scooters of all makes snaked through the rush hour traffic. The police escorted us and the locals watched spellbound. The ride ended again at Skanderbeg Square and the evening party could begin. Various bands played on the big stage, the locals joined in and we enjoyed the sight from a distance in a café, where we sacked out for the evening. In any case, the scooter scene in Albania is very lively and active. It was impressive what they got up to that day. Helmet off!

why we quickly left and visited a trader friend of ours in Durrës. Ergys Narta is an important contact point in the area when it comes to Vespa. He also runs the Vespa Club Durres and has a large collection of Vespas, some of them very rare, from all eras. We spent a convivial afternoon together. For the evening, he had an excellent culinary tip for us. In the midst of the architectural gloom, he showed us a restaurant where we had an excellent meal. We would never have thought of it on our own. Thank you, Ergys!

SUNDAY: JOURNEY HOME

We spent the night on the ferry to Bari and then it was time to say goodbye to old and new friends. However, President Maurizio had organised a farewell lunch that was second to none. One delicacy surpassed the other and with full bellies and all kinds of spiritual drinks in our bulbs, we happily made our way home.

After the big party on Friday, we went back to Durrës. We checked into the hotel on the beach, but I‘d rather not say a word about the surroundings. Nobody wants to spend their holiday here if they still have all five senses together. The architectural fall from grace. That‘s

And while we were enjoying it, we drew a small conclusion: Albania is a country of strong contrasts. Next to the fat German sports car rolls the donkey cart. In the countryside, someone is standing on almost every corner with a cow grazing at the side of the road. Nature is wild and pristine, but in the cities there are still many buildings from the time of concrete communism. There are certainly some people with plenty of dough, but many more inhabitants who have not (yet) managed to jump on the speeding capitalism bandwagon. Prices are rising, tourists are not exactly flocking to the country. Albania has a turbulent past and an uncertain future. For me it was an adventure and a real experience.

Our thanks go to all the organisers from the Vespa Club Bari. What you have achieved with the Giro dei Tre Mari demands a lot of respect from us at SIP Scootershop. From the start to the finish, everything was well thought out, planned and executed. As far as I know, there were no serious accidents and no unpleasant incidents. You definitely deserve a gold medal for leading this tour. On behalf of the Squadra SIP, I say, “Mille Grazie!”.

SIP Scootershop OPEN DAY 2023

12 SIP OPEN DAY

SIP OPEN DAY 13

Our used parts market is always well frequented

Our eyes were on the sky all week and we watched the weather forecasts like bankers watch stock prices. On Thursday the temperatures were still autumnal and on Saturday morning we were still shivering on the scooter. But at around 11 clock the skies cleared and the sun shone over the SIP Scootershop headquarters. Not a second too soon, because it was once again SIP Open Day!

And what can we say? It was a fantastic day spent with friends, guests, suppliers, club members, racers, Sunday drivers, hobbyists and scooter fans. We estimate that around 2,500 people came over the course of the day and we were delighted with everyone and anyone. They came from the north, south,

west and east of this republic. They came from Switzerland, Croatia, Austria, Holland, Belgium, France, Bosnia, Belarus and even Israel. They came by car, bicycle, camper van, train, plane as well as Vespa, Lambretta and other twowheelers.

At the SIP flagship store, the queue at the checkout was almost as long as at the grill and pizza oven. Dozens of horsepower freaks waited patiently with their scooters for the performance test on the test stand. Or they pestered the experts at PINASCO, EGIG PERFORMANCE and NISA with their questions. Cold and hot drinks were provided, an ice cream was always good and DJ Leo Ernst played in 60ies style with real old vinyl plates. The very brave ventured onto the Matscho Karatscho cross-country course and went for a spin on their Vespa. Still others basked in the sun and had lively discussions about petrol. Friends, it was a party and once again it was over far too quickly! We would like to thank the entire SIP Scootershop and SIPERIA team for their great organisation and tireless insert. We hope that all exhibitors, clubs, manufacturers and dealers will come back next year. And of course we would like to thank all our visitors and hope you will stay with us. We will certainly not forget the SIP Scootershop Open Day 2023 in a hurry. To give you a small impression, we have collected some votes, taken many photos and shot a SIP TV video. We hope you enjoy it!

MICHAL & RAAZ

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL

These two young men have by far the longest journey behind them, because it‘s 2,700 kilometres from Jerusalem to Landsberg as the crow flies. We can only respectfully take off our helmet. At home, they have a Vespa PX 200 in operation and are also building a Vespa Sprint. The engine, however, is still missing. ”We also want to buy some parts here and take them with us, because at SIP we find the best parts in the world,” says Raaz and of course we gladly accept this compliment. Michal describes the rest of her travel plans for her week in Germany: ”We still want to see the Porsche and Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, but mainly we really came because of the Open Day. We‘re really excited about everything we get to see and experience here.” We hope the two of them had a good time on the rest of their trip through our republic and would of course be happy to welcome them back next year. Perhaps they will then set off on the long journey with the PX 200 and Sprint. Then they would have a slim 3,800 kilometres to cover. Dig in, boys!

“WE ALSO WANT TO BUY SOME PARTS HERE AND TAKE THEM WITH US, BECAUSE AT SIP WE FIND THE BEST PARTS IN THE WORLD”

BOJAN & MIRJANA CETOJEVIC

BANJA LUKA, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Bojan: “We came from Banja Luka by plane to Memmingen and from there on to Landsberg. I have been a dealer for Vespa parts for five years and always had problems getting the stuff, also because it is very expensive to send the goods to Bosnia. With SIP Scootershop I finally get everything from one source. We have been planning to visit SIP for two years, but always lacked the time. But today it finally worked out and we plan to visit here regularly (laughs).”

“I don‘t have a proper shop in Banja Luka, but sell a lot through Instagram. People in Banja Luka know me and know they can buy pieces from me. In 2012 I started the Vespa Club Banja Luka, by the way the first Vespa Club ever in Bosnia. We started with three members and today we have over 30, but they are not always all active. My personal collection consists of twelve Vesps. Among them a Primavera, several 50s, a Vespa 200, of course a GTS and I gave my wife a Vespa as a wedding present. Unfortunately, the roads in Bosnia are like in Africa (laughs) and the Vespa is not made for that.” “We came to the SIP Open Day to meet a friend from the Vespa Club Reutlingen and to meet new people. Also, I would like to buy some parts and talk to my SIP supervisor Zsofia. This year we came alone, but next time we will come with our scooters and bring lots of friends. It‘s just under a thousand kilometres from Banja Luka to Landsberg and that‘s no distance for a Vespa rider after all (laughs).”

FLORIAN “SPECKI” SPECKHARDT

DRUMMER WITH “IN EXTREMO” AND VESPA RIDER, BERLIN

“For me, the SIP Open Day is the opportunity to visit my home and meet many friends. But I‘m also here because I want to sell my Vespas and mopeds: a Motovespa Sprint 150 with a 200cc PX engine, nicely tuned, rides great and is a beautiful object. Actually, I don‘t want to give the scooter away, but I live in Berlin and don‘t have enough time at the moment. The second bike is a 50cc from 1976, and then there are two Ciao mopeds with 50cc. There are already interested parties and I expect my phone to be running hot in the next few days. Some of the SIP staff are simply my oldest friends and occasionally visit me in Berlin. The day today was very, very nice and the Vespa scene is super organised. I think you could easily party here for another five days and people wouldn‘t run out of things to talk about. I wish everyone a good trip!”

UWE, MARIO AND KAI

VESPISTI LEIPZIG

Kai: “We are the former ‚Schaltpiloten‘ and have now joined forces with other Vespa fans to form the ‚Vespisti Leipzig‘. We came by car today, though, because we‘re going to the football match at FC Bayern against Leipzig with other friends this evening. In the Vespisti we are around 35 active members.” Uwe: “In the East, Vespa doesn‘t have a big tradition, because we were all Simson riders. We all still have several models at home. But in the meantime, together with my wife, I have four Vespas: two modern 250s, a VNB from 1964 and a Vespa Super from 1966.”

Kai: “I ride a FaroBasso and my wife has meanwhile also switched to Vespa. We have never been to the Open Day before and are happy that we stopped by here. It‘s just the right thing for us. We order all our spare parts from SIP, so we really had to check this out and we‘re really excited.”

VOLHA & KALEV ALEINIK

MINSK, BELARUS (WHITE RUSSIA)

Volha: “We came by here because we were visiting our son who is studying in Pilsen in the Czech Republic. We also wanted to visit Munich and then Ralf invited us to the Open Day. This is just great because now we can meet many people and marvel at many Vespas.”

Kalev: “We have a small Vespa gang in Minsk called “Root Boys” and we maintain the tradition of going on a bigger ride every year. We‘ve been to Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Czech Republic, Austria and many other Vespa meetings in Europe. We have also been here in Landsberg before, but never for the Open Day.”

CHRISTIAN “TÜTE” LAUFKÖTTER & UWE BÖDICKER

VESPA CLUB OF GERMANY

Volha: “At the moment it‘s very difficult to get across the borders abroad. The queue at the border crossing was huge and we had to wait ten hours before we could finally leave Belarus.” Kalev: “Our gang in Minsk currently has eight members, but we are like a family. The Vespa is not very popular in Belarus, unfortunately, but I love it and also the whole culture associated with it. I ride a Vespa PX Custom and screw around on it all the time. If you want, you can have a look at it on Instagram. It‘s the one with the two red seats. Getting parts for the Vespa is not easy in Belarus, but luckily we have our friend Ralf at SIP who always helps us.”

Christian (Vice): “We have been attending the Open Day for several years and it is great fun every year. SIP is one of our most important partners and we are very happy to have you on our side. The community cannot exist without the supporters in the scene. As an umbrella organisation, we provide a service to the clubs that we couldn‘t do without you. I have built up a friendly relationship with Ralf and Alex over the years and we feel very much at home here at Open Day. The connection within the scene still has meaning and is still lived by you. That is simply beautiful. Through events like the Open Day, Vespa fans become aware of what‘s going on in the club. Today alone, I‘ve already spoken to three or four groups here who are interested in starting a club.”

Uwe (President): “I have been here several times and have been able to take the factory tour with the boss himself. We just enjoy the day here and are happy to celebrate with SIP. We always enjoy coming back.”

It is not only the right parts that are decisive, but also their color. The color options are almost limitless. In this article, we would like to explain how we at SIP Scootershop deal with the variety of colors.

SIP Scootershop Matscho Karatscho

What a spectacle! Our Vespa Cross Race, MATSCHO KARATSCHO, on SIP Scootershop‘s very own track was an unmitigated success, as is evident from the participants‘ comments. In the days leading up to the race, SIP employees – Jesco, Max, Andrea, Steffi, and many other helpers – were engrossed in preparations. The track needed preparation, soil was brought in, and excavators operated around the clock. Straw bales were delivered, fences were misplaced and then located, flags were ordered, and the paddock set up. Kudos to the entire team: everything was ready punctually.

The mud flies and the studded tyres bite their way through the terrain

Then, as Friday arrived, the riders began to trickle in one by one. They hailed from all corners of the country, as well as from Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. After completing their registration, pizza and beer were served in the Siperia, providing an opportunity for participants to mingle. Spirits were high, and the anticipation was palpable.

NOMEN EST OMEN: MUD AND DIRT

During the night, the weather took a turn, resulting in heavy rain. By Saturday morning, the state of the track truly embodied the event‘s name: endless mud. The first intrepid riders managed a few laps before needing to wash dirt from every crevice of their scooters. Despite the conditions, the qualifying rounds went ahead, and eventually, race director Jesco waved the black and white chequered flag to signal the first start. And then the race was on! In the moped class, the Swiss Marc Breu effortlessly led the way, completing his laps without any close rivals. With his Puch, no one could match his pace. He also claimed the day‘s fastest lap with a time of 51.215 seconds. Yet, there was special applause for Finn Brendle, who, undeterred and with stoic determination, navigated the track on his

unmodified Ciao from the back of the pack – a true display of sportsmanship. As expected, Marc Breu clinched victory in both races. He was closely followed by his Swiss Mofakult teammate, Christian Fäh, and then by Sebastian Krüger. Reflecting on his performance, Marc Breu commented: “I competed with my moped, boasting a frame from Puch and an engine from Sachs – a testament to enduring technology. The track was perfectly suited to my moped, with its short straights tailored for single-gear racing. We participate in the championship in Switzerland as well as in various individual races. Within our team, we have an arsenal of four cross mopeds, which we choose from based on specific race regulations.”

SUCCESSES AND MISHAPS OF THE VESPA RIDERS

The Class 3 races brought some real excitement, welcoming any scooter, whether currently in use or previously operated. Stefan Göllner created quite a buzz, delivering a remarkable performance on the muddy track with his off-the-shelf Vespa GTS. He faced close competition from Wolfgang Altmann and the local champion, Max Heigl from Landsberg.

Göllner clinched a clear victory in the initial

round, but in the second race, his GTS didn‘t fare as well, shutting down during jumps. Yet, Stefan took it all in good humour, commenting, “Despite that, it‘s an excellent event. I‘d rate it a solid AAA. The course is just right – couldn‘t be any better. I‘m somewhat annoyed with the darned scooter, but overall, everything‘s brilliant. I traded for the GTS on Thursday, my mates quickly found me some 12-inch cross tyres, and then I registered for the race, booked a hotel, and set off on Friday. I made no modifications to the bike. I‘ll definitely be here again next year.” Taking advantage of Göllner‘s misfortune, Heigl and Altmann sped to the top two spots. Both Göllner (with a lap time of 57.289 seconds) and Heigl (58.698 seconds) impressively clocked in under a minute. However, Max Heigl too faced his share of issues, noting, “The track was fantastic, but by the second lap, I was jammed on full throttle. So, I relied entirely on the brake. Naturally, my clutch is now busted, marking the last race for this Vespa. It‘s headed straight for the scrap container. On this track, it‘s essential to maintain your lane and dodge the large stones. A fantastic event – count me in for next year.”

absolutely thrilling,” he beamed, “even though I might‘ve finished last – I‘m not quite sure. By the end, the track had mostly dried up, making it more navigable. Only the waterlogged spot proved a tad tricky; the ruts were hard to spot.

“IT‘S AN EXCELLENT EVENT. I‘D RATE IT A SOLID AAA.”

If someone ahead veers off track and you follow suit, you‘re likely to skid off as well. Usually, I only ride in my grandpa‘s meadow, so today was my first brush with such a terrain.” SIP racer, André Jüterbock, unfortunately, was rather downcast. The custom scooter from Butcher‘s Garage in St. Petersburg broke down. Racing without brakes isn‘t the wisest decision. He had to bow out after just two laps in the first race, and sadly, participating in the second round wasn‘t an option. Quite the pity, but such is the nature of the sport! Emerging triumphant at the end of the day was Max Heigl on a Vespa Cosa, followed closely by Wolfgang Altmann and Paul Prötz.

ITALIAN DOMINANCE

As the horizon darkened, resembling an artist‘s spill of black ink across the canvas of the sky, the riders of the Class 2 “Smallframe” took their positions. Although the thunderstorm had passed, the semi-professional riders of the Italian Vezzola Racing team took to the track with fervour: Davide Monizza, Federico Esposto, and

Roberto Laude, clearly demonstrating the motorsport in their veins. Caught in between were Dennis Franceschini, Valentino Randazzo and a certain Elvis Jüterbock, a young scion of the renowned Jüterbock racing dynasty. For his inaugural cross race, he fared commendably with his Egig engine. After a somewhat shaky start, he secured 6th place in the first heat and an impressive 5th in the subsequent one. His father André remarked, visibly touched, “I‘m incredibly proud of the lad.” Elvis himself chimed in, “The Vespa, which we assembled

live online, performed beyond expectations. Its speed was particularly surprising. During the qualifying round, the track was rather muddy, so I took a measured approach. However, this allowed me to familiarise myself with the conditions. Regrettably, I lagged by ten seconds at the start and arrived late on the track. But after the four formidable Italians, I was right up there. The Italian in 4th position matched my pace, and our fierce rivalry left me so fatigued by the fifth lap that I found myself nearly veering off the track. Sadly, I only clinched sixth place. In the second race, however, I fared better and managed to hold on to the fifth position. I maintained a steady pace, whilst some of my competitors faltered due to overzealousness. I‘m quite pleased with how I performed, especially given the gruelling nature of the track. It‘s a fantastic event, and I hadn‘t anticipated just how exhilarating it would be.” All three victors recorded times under a minute. Both the finishing placements and daily winners were consistent: Federico Esposto, clocking in at 55.039, led the pack, followed by Roberto Laude with a

time of 57.455 and then Dennis Franceschini, finishing at 58.832. Renowned participants such as Arnold Kastenhuber, Thomas Haas, Paul Sinnhuber, Christian Ortlieb, and Max Renner found themselves amidst the rest of the pack. The champion, Federico Esposto, was elated: “The track is delightful, quite muddy in sections. I‘m genuinely thrilled we had the opportunity to race here. It‘s been a joyous

experience. The crowd here is simply congenial and warm-hearted. I also participate in Vespa Cross races back in Italy, where I secured two national championships in 2019 and 2021. In addition, I regularly engage in motocross. Given how splendid this year‘s event was, I‘m determined to return next year.” As events unfolded, the looming dark clouds proved merely bluster. By the time the “Largeframe” Class 4 riders took to their starting positions, the track was somewhat dry, with the exception of the detested water ditch. Joe Dierkes, riding his Vespa Cosa, effortlessly clinched victories in both races, finishing over ten seconds ahead of his closest competitors on each occasion. The subsequent rankings too displayed a consistent pattern: Michael Beger, Alex Konrad, Dirk Becker, and Hubert Leitgeb. As a result, Dierkes, Beger, and Konrad ascended to the podium to celebrate the day‘s triumphs.

DRAMATIC CLIMAX

While the majority of riders appeared to have expended their energy reserves, several found the zeal to partake in the endurance race. This race involves teams of two to four riders, looping around for an uninterrupted hour. The key is flexibility; riders switch out at their

discretion, but the entire team must utilise the same vehicle. However, as if on cue, the heavens opened up just before the event, turning the track into a quagmire of challenges. The Francescini/Haas/Martintoni/Jüterbock (senior) team made a roaring start, clocking a lap time of 1:01.701 in the sludge. Yet, such pace came at a cost. A fuel hose dislodged from the carburettor, necessitating time-consuming repairs. Seizing this opportunity, the Candioli/ Köhl team surged into the lead. However, as the race wore on, the prowess of the Vezzola Racing team became evident. They had started cautiously, perhaps waiting for the right moment. And it came. As the rain waned and the track‘s condition became less treacherous, they accelerated their pace. They advanced relentlessly, ultimately outpacing Candioli/Köhl in the dying moments of the race. When the chequered flag marked the end of the 60-minute, 49-lap race, Vezzola Racing had carved out a nine-second advantage. In this thrilling contest, not only did Franziska Böhnlein stand out as the only female racer to finish with her team, but Timo from ‚Blechgefährten‘ also teamed up with Valentino Randazzo to clinch a commendable fourth position, especially given that his own Vespa had faltered during the individual races due to ignition issues. For Jesco, the race director, Saturday was a resounding triumph. “For me, the day was an absolute win. We were graced with a high turnout of both participants and spectators, and

the weather was serendipitous, holding the rain at bay until the late afternoon. The races were not only captivating but filled with nailbiting moments. The climax was undoubtedly the Endurance Race, with victory hanging in the balance until the final moments. However, the crowning moment came when I enquired about the day‘s incidents with the paramedics and received the reply, ‚Nothing at all.‘ Yes, we had a few tumbles and perhaps a bruised rib or two, but even the commotion in Class 2 didn‘t result in any serious injuries. The participants were brimming with enthusiasm, and feedback regarding the track was universally positive. The ovation that the SIP team received during the awards ceremony truly underscored their exemplary efforts. All in all, I couldn‘t be more content with how the day unfolded.”

THE ENDURANCE RACE WAS ONLY DECIDED AT THE LAST MINUTE.

A DAY WHERE EVERYONE WON

With fatigue etched on their faces and covered in muck, the riders made their way to the awards ceremony, encompassing all classes and races. Applause wasn’t reserved just for the champions, but for every participant who braved the mud, overcame crashes, navigated waterlogged ditches, tackled technical snags, and other hurdles that the day presented.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all the helpers: the marshals, commentators, timekeepers, camera crews, and photographers. Not forgetting those manning the barbecue and pizza ovens, the drinks cart, and the DJ booth. Each one of you transformed MATSCHO KARATSCHO 2023 into a spectacular event, captivating and thrilling the 1,500 onlookers. Reflecting on the day, SIP Scootershop‘s CEO and the brain behind the race, Ralf Jodl, remarked, “We were truly blessed with the weather – after the practice rounds, the sun graced us with its presence for the majority of the day, while just a few kilometres away, storms raged on. What struck me was the camaraderie amongst participants: there was a shared spirit of cooperation, with tools and spare parts freely exchanged. During the endurance race, team boundaries blurred, creating a melting pot of collaboration. It was an unforgettable day for both riders and spectators. We eagerly anticipate Matscho Karatscho #3 in 2024!”

Vespa Ride in the Philippines Breakfast Ride 6.0

While we are slowly preparing for the season in these latitudes and looking forward to the upcoming events such as SIP Open Day and Matscho Karatscho, elsewhere on the globe people are already riding out. This was the case in the Philippines, where our friend and business partner Eugene Buenaventura from ScooterDepot organised the Breakfast Ride 6.0. On 2 April, lovers of the cult two-wheelers (Vespa, Lambretta, LML and Royal Alloy) met for a free breakfast and subsequent ride.

The meeting point was the venerable Royale Tagaytay Country Club in Alfonso Cavite, in the crater of a former volcano, about 70 kilometres from the gates of the capital Manila. “Last year we had around 450 participants, this time there were around 750 scooter fans,” Eugene and his two older sons, who have now also been infected with the Vespa virus, are pleased to say. In bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures, after the physical refreshment, the participants went out onto the streets, where passers-by were amazed by the stylish scooters and no less stylish riders.

Eugene sent us a video that really gets us excited about the events that will take place this year. We have also linked the video from ReboManIsEverywhere. Lots of cool impressions that whet your appetite for more. Best wishes to the Philippines!

to the Sahara

Time and again, we receive travel reports from Vespa enthusiasts from all over the world, which makes us very happy. This is also the case with this story sent to us by Irena from the Vespa Club Ljubljana in Slovenia. in February 2023, 20 women and men set off on the long journey to Tunisia to explore the Sahara, among other places. You can read about how they fared here. Have fun!

32 VESPA TRIP SAHARA

TRIESTE? SICILY? MOROCCO? - TUNISIA!

The Vespa Club Ljubljana is an amateur association of owners of the popular Vespa motorbikes. The club has over 100 registered members. We are united by our love of Vespas and occasional Vespa rides. We own a colourful collection of Vespas, from the newest to the venerable old ones. The club organises traditional meetings, rides to open and close the season and social gatherings at regular Tuesday rides. The members take part in numerous meetings organised by clubs throughout Europe and it goes without saying that real bonds of friendship have been forged between the members. On a Friday, 20 May 2022, a group gathered at Gizmoz for morning coffee. After animated conversations and increased caffeine intake, the idea of starting the scooter season earlier was born. Samo and Gašper spontaneously planned a winter tour around Trieste or even as far as Africa. Morocco was chosen as the first destination and the plan developed quickly. Despite initial reservations within the club, 18 members joined the trip. The continuation of this story is a jointly written adventure: a Vespa trip through Tunisia.

CROSSING AND FIRST BREAKDOWN

26-HOUR CROSSING FROM ITALY TO TUNISIA.

Organising a large team of 20 Vespa travellers was no easy task. Numerous meetings were held before departure to discuss details such as logistics, documents, spare parts and tools. The route was prepared and accommodation was booked. On Thursday, 23 February 2023, off we went! The Vespas were loaded onto a lorry and we followed in two vans and a car. During the 26-hour crossing from Civitavecchia to Tunisia, we planned our journey. Arriving in La Goulette, Tunisia, we passed through the numerous customs stations and the first Vespa was already damaged. We reached the Lafayette Hotel after midnight, helped each other navigate and arrived happily. The next morning we set off full of anticipation, did a photo shoot and set off. Unfortunately, one Vespa couldn‘t continue, despite our best efforts it couldn‘t be repaired. It was with a heavy heart that we had to say goodbye to a member of the expedition.

PLASTIC, BREAKDOWN, POLICE

While we were getting ready in the morning, a police car was already parked outside the

hotel, escorting us through the city centre and the suburbs. We then set off on our own, each on our own Vespa, with enough time to take in the surroundings. We passed olive tree plantations, but also uncultivated areas with plastic bags scattered around. The amount of discarded plastic was impressive. On the way, we were warned by the police to change our route due to unrest. We took a diversion and reached our hotel in the dark. The next morning, when it was 5°C outside, we visited the archaeological site of Sufetula. On the way to Gafsa, we crossed a desert area with new palm plantations. The journey took us to the Chebika oasis gorge, where another Vespa broke down. Locals helped us get it back to the hotel. The rest of the group continued across the salt lake, where we saw camels for the first time. In the evening, the organisation of the Vespa repair began with the help of friendly lo-

cals. There was always someone “who knows someone who knows someone”.

VESPA VS. FIAT PANDA 1:0

The next morning, two groups of travellers set off for the salt lake of Chott el Djerid, where an abandoned bus stands. The Fiat Panda Rally participants had already started their stage there. A humorous VESPA VS. PANDA

RALLY RACE took place when our president Rok competed against a Panda on his birthday. His Vespa jumped into the air right after the start in first gear, the engine didn‘t work well in second gear and the race only really got going in third gear. The track on the salt flats was less than a kilometre long, and after about 500 metres the Vespa was already in the lead. After initial difficulties, the Vespa won the race on the short Salzboden track. In the evening,

the Panda participants congratulated and praised Rok for his well-deserved victory. The third group stayed in the city, searched for a brake drum and found a small workshop. The owner did his best, and somewhere under the stairs they found a dilapidated Vespa, removed the drum and, after a few minor adjustments, successfully transplanted it onto our member‘s Vespa.

LOTS OF SAND, LOTS OF WIND AND STAR WARS

We crossed a salt lake, passed palm groves and battled with strong winds on the way to Douz, the gateway to the Sahara. We spent the night in the “El Mouradi Douz” hotel. The next day we ventured into a real desert, experienced off-road adventures and reached Matmata, where “Star Wars” was filmed. We spent the night in the cave hotel “Marhala” with typical

Berber food. The journey took us through Gabès to Kairouan, where we visited a market and explored the town. The last stage took us from Kairouan to Tunis, past Hammamet and Sidi Bou Saïd. Despite a broken Vespa, we made it to the harbour of La Goulette with the help of seatbelts and took the 36-hour ferry to Civitavecchia. In good company, we analysed our experiences and laughed about many stories, while one member, whose Vespa broke down on the first morning, created his own adventure. He accompanied us partly by car and offered luggage transport and a drinks service.

EXPERIENCES FOR FUTURE TRAVELLERS

The trip ended without any injuries or accidents, thanks to our careful organisation and preparation. We had accident insurance, did without tap water, carried homemade schnapps for our health and had international driving licences. We travelled in groups of three, looked out for each other and had spare parts and tools with us. Tunisian SIM cards ensured communication, while the police escorted us several times and watched us carefully to ensure our safety. Traffic in Tunis was chaotic, but people were friendly and waved cheerfully at us. The roads were good, with few potholes, and despite improvised lanes, everything worked smoothly. There were plenty of petrol stations, but our Vespas with small tanks forced us to fill up at local vendors too. The locals were friendly and when we stopped, we were often surrounded by children. On the first day we had difficulty withdrawing money as the banks were closed, but we managed to

get by with euros. We travelled a good 1300 km on our Vespas, and we can only pay tribute to the “donkeys” that withstood all the rigours of the journey: 20 Vespas, the oldest in 1957, the youngest in 2020, all at least 125 cc, all but three classic cars. The participants are also very diverse, with over 50 years between the youngest and the oldest. Our sincere thanks go to all the sponsors, including SIP Scootershop, and members who helped us to organise and realise a truly fantastic experience.

TRev Counter for Vespa T5 SIP Speedometer

he SIP Speedometer/ Rev Counter, a multifunctional device from SIP PERFORMANCE specially designed for Vespa T5 Models, presents itself in the style of traditional analogue instruments. These combined SIP Rev Counters and Speedometers have been revolutionising the market since 2010. They combine functions that were previously only possible with several separate devices in a single, discreetly designed instrument.

CLASSIC LOOK, MANY FUNCTIONS

The Speedometer T5, designed in the classic style of the coveted Vespa T5 instruments with analogue Rev Counter, offers a temperature measurement in addition to the display of RPM and speed. It has a simple menu navigation that allows you to easily switch between AF and EGT connections. Two discreet Press Buttons, cleverly integrated into the speedometer glass, allow you to switch between different digital displays. A special highlight is the selftest of the Rev Counter, which creates a little Grand Prix atmosphere every time the engine is started. Speed, revs and Fuel Gauge are

constantly displayed in analogue form, while the speedometer also has two digital displays on which various additional functions, including speed or revs, can be shown digitally.

AVAILABLE IN TWO VERSIONS

The T5 Rev Counter is available in two versions: a national version that displays speeds in km/h and an international version that supports both km/h and mph to meet the needs of the MPH market. Another useful feature for long distance journeys is the ability to choose between two separate routes with journey times and average speeds - ideal for distinguishing day trips from longer journeys. The total distance can also be set, which makes it easier to transfer kilometre readings from the old speedometer. Another highlight is the Gear Display, which shows the gear currently engaged. This is achieved by matching the rpm and speed travelled to calculate the gear ratio. This function requires initial calibration as there are numerous possible combinations of primary gear ratio, rear wheel size and the individual

Custom Creation Vyatka VP150

Dietrich Limper Alexander Dymov
38 CUSTOM CREATION

And here comes the next Vyatka from the house of Butcher Garage Belgrade. In this case, it‘s a copy of the Vespa GS 150: a Vyatka VP150, which was produced without a licence in the former USSR from 1955 to 1965. Alex and Co. also took this scooter to task and modified it to their heart‘s content, as they had already done with the Vyatka Elektron. The result is impressive and is certainly one of the more exotic custom scooters. But let Alex tell us more about this project and its realisation.

CUSTOM CREATION 39

THE WOLF IN SHEEP‘S CLOTHING

The etymology of the name of our workshop is quite simple. We love to dismantle a donor into its individual parts, which is why we are not very popular in the Vespa club community, as we believe that “it has to be original”. The last two projects of our workshop before moving to Serbia were symbolically, but completely coincidentally, based on Soviet scooters, not Vespa as we are used to. They were the Vyatka VP150 and the Vyatka Elektron. Almost a year after we opened, we built the Invader project based on a 1960 Vespa ACMA, which graced the cover of the English magazine Scootering and brought our workshop worldwide fame. And now, more than ten years later, we are ending our activities in St. Petersburg with a new edition of the project for one of our biggest fans. And of course, this version, built on the basis of the Vyatka VP150 1959 (a Soviet copy of the Vespa 150GS), has been created taking into account all the experience we have gained over the past ten years. Whereas in the first case we acted almost blindly, this time the design was preceded by detailed planning using Solidworks.

PX MEETS LX

We integrated the Steering Head from the Vespa PX and fitted a modified Fork (shortened lower section and extended upper section) from the modern Vespa LX150 into the front section of the bodywork. We constructed and welded a sturdy stainless steel box frame and connected it to the front part of the body. The rear part of the bodywork no longer has a structural function, but acts as a decorative bonnet that can be opened with the Key via a throttle cable. A new 12-litre stainless steel tank is mounted on the frame, which also serves as a dirt cover for the Air Filter.

TUNING WITH SIP SCOOTERSHOP

Thanks to our German partner SIP Scootershop, we had no problems selecting the tuning parts: we used proven Bitubo Shock Absorbers with maximum adjustability, mounted the Engine on polyurethane silent blocks, VOGA front

radial 4-piston brakes on AF-Parts hubs paired with a floating Brake Disc from Polini, a twopiece rim from Pinasco for tubeless Tyres, a milled and race team-tested wheel body from PLC Corse with a Polini hub. For the project, we used the engine from the Vespa Cosa 200, which was also heavily modified: Welding of surfaces, milling, porting and installation of polyurethane silent blocks. The displacement was increased to 244 cc thanks to the Quattrini aluminium cylinder. The Exhaust, Clutch, lightweight sports ignition and Crankshaft are all tried and tested products from SIP Scootershop. This monster is powered by a Mikuni TMX38 carburettor and

our upgraded MRP intake manifold. The rear brakes have been taken from the Vespa Cosaa hydraulic drum, but the power is transferred to them thanks to a brake kit from Crimaz.

THIS TIME, THE DESIGN WAS PRECEDED BY DETAILED PLANNING WITH SOLIDWORKS.

Just like the first version of the project, we opted for a classic chopper Seat and open Handlebar, but this time the Headlight Unit (which incidentally also comes from the Soviet “Verkhovina” moped) has moved from the front Mudguard to the top of the Sign and houses an electronic SIP Speedometer. The choice of Handlebar took a long time, but in the end we opted for a cruiser version of the Electra bike with a Tula 200 stem.

MOVE TO BELGRADE

These two Vyatka scooters also mark an important milestone for Butcher Garage, as they are the last two models to leave the workshop in St Petersburg. Alex, his co-conspirators Arseniy Chekar and Vlad Zaki, their employees and their families have all moved to Belgrade in Serbia. Some of them have travelled by plane, but the rest have “walked” over 4,000 miles across Russia and Georgia, Turkey and Bulgaria to get there. “For all the fans of our work in Russia, our move is a great loss and we are grateful to our friends, regulars, musicians and photographers for their tremendous support over the last ten years,” adds Alex. “With longing in our hearts, we are leaving our home country to continue in a new place. On the other hand, we are happy that our garage is now even closer to the big family of Vespa lovers. Belgrade opens up new opportunities for our friends around the world to continue working together to inspire our fans with new projects. We continue to grow and developour meat cleaver has only become sharper and our hands stronger.”

Vespa World Days 2023 Interlaken, Switzerland

Interlaken

Last year, due to the long distance, we were only able to send a small delegation to the Vespa World Days (VWD) in Bali. But this year the World Days took place on our doorstep: in Switzerland. To be precise, in Interlaken, the pretty town in the Bernese Oberland, situated between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun.

By travelling to the VWD, we killed two birds with one stone. On the one hand, we could visit the event and be present there with SIP Scootershop, and on the other hand, we used the trip as our annual Vespa road trip. Participants were quickly found: Otto, Moritz, André, Dennis, Alex and myself from SIP Scootershop. We were joined by our buddy Phillip, Bernd from our film team Ab-gedreht and this year‘s special guest: Eugene from Manila, our friend and customer from the Scooter Depot in the Philippines.

WITH THE VESPA THROUGH RAILWAY ROMANCE

On Wednesday, 14 June, we set off from the gates of the SIP headquarters in Landsberg. Of course, we could have now taken the motorway and roared through to Interlaken - but that was not the purpose of the undertaking. We wanted to reach our destination on narrow roads to get to know the landscape, people, culture and gastronomy. The weather was perfect, the tanks full, so we rattled off in good spirits. In the Tannheimer Tal, cows prevented us from continuing, but once we had overcome this hurdle, we made our way swiftly to Unteriberg,

where we set up our first bivouac on Swiss soil at the Landgasthof Rösslipost. The land of the Swiss is a true paradise for scooter riders. We thought we were in a diorama of a Märklin H0 railway. You can‘t get enough of the wooden houses, lush meadows and the ever-present and impressive Alpine peaks. Again and again, people stopped, marvelled and took photos. These are the rewards of being on small roads. Early to bed, because the next day awaited us with challenges. Another driver joined us in the evening: Thomas “Hasi”, who had already accompanied us in Albania.

JAMES BOND, THE GRIMSEL AND A HOTEL

Thursday, 15 June: After the first bends, which were, however, only a shadow of those to

come, we headed south along the eastern shore of Lake Lucerne. Into the high Alps! Through Andermatt and Hossental we approached the Furka Pass - the first highlight of our tour. However, we first had to give way to other twowheelers, because the Tour de Suisse was on its way. So we watched the people who think it makes sense to conquer the mountains with muscle power. Crazy! Following in the footsteps of James Bond actor Sean Connery and villain Gert Fröbe, who stood here in front of the camera for Goldfinger, we finally climbed the pass at 2,429 m above sea level (the sign on site with 2,436 m above sea level is misleading). The scooters had earned a break, because at this altitude the two-strokes run much too rich and start to puff properly. At the top of the pass, of course, there were many other scooter riders who were on their way to Interlaken and were coming here from the canton of Uri into the Valais. On the descent, we passed the legendary Hotel Belvédère, which nestles in a serpentine, but has been closed since 2015. Once we reached the bottom, we only had a short rest, because the next mountain classification was coming up at the

Cow vs. Vespa and Bernd 45

Grimsel Pass. The Swiss affectionately call the pass “the Grimsel” and we once again screwed our way up to 2,163 m above sea level. Up here at the pass, we again met Norwegians, Swedes and other travellers who shared our passion for mountains and curves. The ride down into the valley was not exactly frantic, as we had to stop again and again to marvel at the breathtaking panorama. With these impressions in our luggage, we arrived in Interlaken towards evening. Speaking of luggage: On this tour, I marvelled at the most adventurous variations of how people attach their utensils to the scooter. It didn‘t always look safe and well thought out. I recommend our guidebook for safe travel and arrival. On site, there was a big “hello”, because Alex‘s father Walter joined our troop. He had chosen a different route with his Vespa GTS 300, stayed in youth hostels and managed the route at his own pace. And Walter is already over 70. Respect. We checked into various accommodations and finally,

exhausted but satisfied, stretched our legs under the table while we dined together with other friends in the evening.

FRIENDS AND VESPAS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

On Friday, 16 June, the World Days were in full swing, but we first decided on a comparatively short ride to the famous Grindelwald. Again we went through landscapes that seemed to be painted, to the legendary mountain massif of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. In the shadow of the menacing North Face, cold drinks and local Pure

food were consumed before finally heading back to the event, where we spent the next few hours enjoying the attractions on offer, such as the Vespa Museum and Vespa Village. We also welcomed Mascha, Christian and Ruben, who had set up the SIP Scootershop stand and were now looking after it. Many thanks for your insert. It was time to meet old acquaintances and friends: Ralph Bollag from Zurich, Josh Rodgers from Vespa Club USA, Bag from VCVD, Costas Kirou from Greece, Pachu Pasciullo from Vespa Club Argentina and many more. Time for socialising, anecdotes, memories and petrol talks. In the evening, we continued to celebrate in Interlaken, as did most of the 4,500 registered participants. It remains to be seen whether the organisers really need to offer the 0.2 litre beer for 7.50 and the Spritz for 17 euros to cover their costs. It was not customer-friendly and the event area was deserted at a late hour.

THOUSANDS OF VESPAS ON THE RUNWAY

On Sunday, 17 June, the big tour followed on the runway of the old airport, where the

World Days took place. The classic parade through the surrounding countryside was unfortunately not allowed, so thousands of Vespas rolled leisurely over the tarmac and I was once again impressed by the diversity of Vespa fans. Smartly dressed and styled ladies and gentlemen rode next to cowls and scooter boys. Freaks in bunny suits, tattooed men in t-shirts and distinguished older gentlemen rolled together towards the midday sun. There is hardly a scene in the world of engines where everyone is really allowed to be who they want to be. And they are all united by their love of one vehicle: the Vespa. I‘ve been around for many, many years now, but this panopticon fascinates me anew every time. In the afternoon, we took off on our own into the mountains and let ourselves be carried by a gondola to even loftier heights in car-free Meiringen. Once again the view of the iconic peaks. Unforgettable. Just like the last evening in Interlaken, where we enjoyed ourselves once more.

RETURN JOURNEY

For the return journey on Sunday, 18 June, we chose a different route. Past Lake Sarnen, Lake Alpnach and other lakes, we went to Meilen on Lake Zurich. However, without André and Thomas, who took the road in a different direction to embark on another adventure: Rallye des 3 Massifs to Corsica. But that is another story. On Monday, 19 June, we drove to familiar climes without any breakdowns and arrived safely in Landsberg in the late afternoon. What can I say?

TIME FOR SOCIALISING, ANECDOTES, MEMORIES AND PETROL TALK.

The scenery alone is worth the trip and the absolute added value of this location. You can be divided about the pricing, but we and everyone else didn‘t let that spoil our mood. Either way, our road trip to the Vespa World Days Interlaken 2023 will remain in our memories. Our thanks go to all the helpers, participants, friends and acquaintances. It‘s the company that makes such an event and once again it was exceptional. Roger. Over. And Out.

Thailand 2024 Viva la Vespa

During my time in Thailand I had the opportunity to visit some friends, Vespa enthusiasts and business partners, for example Lome from Vintage Vespa Thai/Auu Vespa and Kittisak from Lady Bug Scooter. The warmth and hospitality is unrivalled and I would like to thank them for the great conversations and rides we were able to experience together. Rarely have I been so warmly welcomed.

PEACE, JOY, VESPA

Another very special event was “Viva la Vespa 2024”, which attracted crowds of young people to six locations in Thailand from 9 to 10 March 2024. I was there in Bangkok and, according to the organiser Vespa Thailand, over 10,000 scooters were at the start here alone. I travelled with around 200 other Vespisti, escorted by the police on motorbikes, across Bangkok to the festival site. Everyone who came on a Vespa had free entry, and that also applied to the passenger. And there was a lot on offer! We were represented on the dealer mile by Lome with SIP Scootershop and the people were very happy that I was there. They thanked us profusely for our commitment to Vespa and, above all, the old two-strokes. “People are just thrilled that the boss of SIP Scootershop is here and interested in the scene,” Lome explained to me. “It‘s important to them that they can thank you personally for this appreciation.” Even though around 90 per cent of the Vespa riders at this meeting are travelling on modern Vespas, there is an active and very knowledgeable scene dedicated to classic Vespas. And when you see how much effort the GTS, Sprint and Primavera riders put into styling their scooters, it was no wonder that popular brands such as Soca from Indonesia and Öhlins were present with stands.

A VESPA EVENT LIVE ON TELEVISION

It was impressive to see the professionalism with which the event was organised by Vespa: In addition to a large food area, there was also something for the kids, who were allowed to complete a course on a small Vespa. A Vespa town was also set up, all in Italian style, including ice cream vendors, pizza bakers and a carousel with real Vespas. During the course

of the day, eight (!) brand new Vespas were raffled off and two concert stages featured artists such as Bowkylion, F. Hero, Lomosonic and Bright, who we hardly know here in Europe but who are in the top league in Thailand. There were professional photo studios at several points where visitors could take photos of themselves with Vespa. Several camera teams captured every moment, there was Vespa merchandise for sale and all kinds of fun games.

48 VIVA LA VESPA

Of course, Vespa is the organiser and of course it‘s also about marketing and commerce. While the mix is often viewed with scepticism here, the Thais are happy to be offered this beautiful stage and fill it with good humour and an amazingly fresh spirit. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back, there are no rival groups or other conflicts, just a lot of peace and love from a very young audience. I strolled around the site, enjoyed the colourful hustle and bustle, was able to greet all kinds of very friendly peo-

ple and was available for lots of photos. I didn‘t see a single security guard during the entire festival and there was no bag check at the entrance. Perhaps it is precisely this mentality that makes the country so attractive: friendly, peaceful and trendy. In conclusion, I can only say that it was a unique experience for me. The many impressions I gathered and the encounters I had with the local people made me very happy, but also gave me food for thought. Classic Vespa or modern Vespa? Gearstick or automatic? Plates or plastic? There are fundamental discussions here, in Thailand everyone is travelling together. Viva la Vespa!

Vespa smallframe

HOW DID THE VESPA SMALLFRAME SERIES COME ABOUT?

The history of the Vespa Smallframes began in the early 1960s. Piaggio was on everyone‘s lips and could look back on a successful history with its two million Vespas sold. But the brains behind the Piaggio brand were already making plans for another Vespa model series to tap into new customer groups. In particular, young people from the age of 14 who at the time were allowed to ride a 1.5 hp model without a driving licence. The Italian manufacturer also wanted to attract women to the Vespa, who until then had mostly only been seen on the roads as passengers. This gave Piaggio‘s engineers and riders the idea of developing a Vespa with a much more compact frame. The advantages of this were obvious: with a slimmer, lighter and more manoeuvrable body, it was possible for anyone to ride the small Italian engineering marvel without any problems. Piaggio presented the first Vespa Smallframe model in 1963, which from then on vied for the favour of buyers on the scooter market with the likewise brand-new Largeframe model Vespa GS 160.

HOW DO YOU RECOGNISE A SMALLFRAME?

As already mentioned, the Vespa Smallframe was designed to be as light and compact as

possible. For this reason, the first model in the series, the Vespa 50, had a much slimmer frame and a lighter, shorter and more stable body. It shrank in all dimensions in general and in the step-through in particular. The side covers, which were removable on the Wideframe and Largeframe models, were permanently integrated on the Smallframe, so that they were now part of the sheet metal frame. This was provided with a small engine flap on the right-hand side. The attached sheet metal cascade, which was already used on the classic models of the 50s and 60s, was also adapted to the 50s Vespa models and changed to a plastic cascade on the Special models in the 70s. There were also some changes under the bonnet: due to the smaller installation space, the engine was completely redesigned and the cylinder was installed at a 45 degree angle. While the versions were initially equipped with conventional breaker ignition systems, these changed over the course of the model‘s history to the ever-popular and easier to maintain electronic ignition.

WHAT SMALLFRAME MODELS WERE AVAILABLE AND WHICH WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT?

Vespa 50 N, 50 L, 50 R

We have already said that the manufacturer Piaggio started the history of the Smallframe

series in 1963/64 with the Vespa 50. Just one year later, however, the Vespa 50 N came onto the market, which initially only featured colour changes, but was later given technical innovations. An extended wheelbase, an enlarged engine flap, a modified engine housing and different frame lengths were just some of the changes made to the Vespa 50 N, 50 L and 50 R models over the years. Incidentally, to mark the 3,000,000th Vespa produced, an anniversary model of the 50 N was released in 1991, which was limited to 3,000 units.

Vespa 50 Super Sprint

The Vespa 50 Super Sprint, or SS for short, which was produced in the mid-1960s, not only looked sportier than the other models in the 50 series, but was also far superior to the others in terms of performance. A “tapered”, shortened contour at the upper end of the leg shield as well as narrower, dropped handlebars and a narrower mudguard gave the Vespa 50 Super Sprint a fresher look than its counterparts in the 50 series. The seat on this model now folded backwards instead of forwards and a toolbox was also installed between the leg shield and the seat bench to allow the knees to close. Thanks to the padding, it was also possible to get into a bent-forward position during a fast ride. A spare wheel with hubcap in the paint colours of the respective Super Sprint Vespa was fitted underneath the toolbox.

MODEL HISTORY 51

Vespa 90 and Vespa 90 Super Sprint

In addition to the SS50, the Italians launched a more powerful version on the market in the same year with the Vespa 90: the engine was similar to that of the smaller V50 counterpart, but the stroke was extended to 51 mm. The Vespa 90 Super Sprint, or SS for short, was identical to the 50 in every detail, but with 90 cc it offered more power and therefore reached a higher speed. Today, the 90cc and 50cc Super Sprint models are among the rarest versions of the Smallframe series, which is why they are particularly popular with Vespa enthusiasts. Due to all these technical and visual details, the Vespa SS was virtually predestined for racing series, as the Vespa 90 Super Sprint also had the most powerful smallframe engines of the time. These reached speeds of up to 86 km/h. It was therefore not surprising that the Super Sprint models were even allowed to take part in series such as the Gruppo Piloti Speciali (GTS).

Vespa 125 Nuova and Vespa 125 Primavera

With the Vespa 125 Nuova, Piaggio combined

many features of the 50 and 90 models in 1965. The scooter was the first Vespa with 10-inch tyres and 125 cc displacement, which were taken from the Vespa Super Sprint. Three years later, the 125 Primavera, the successor to the Vespa 125 Nuova, was launched on the market. Additional storage space in the left rear side cover and an improved engine output of just under 6 hp made the hearts of 125 fans beat faster.

Vespa 50 Special and Vespa 50 Elestart

It was not until 1969 that Piaggio made fundamental - mainly visual - changes to the 50 model series, which came onto the market

Elestart version of the Vespa 50 at the same time. The only differences were the new starter motor and the two batteries, which were located under the left-hand side bonnet.

Vespa 125 Primavera ET3

“THE VESPA 90 SUPER SPRINT ALSO HAD THE MOST POWERFUL SMALLFRAME SMALLFRAME ENGINES OF THE TIME. THESE REACHED UP TO 86 KM/H.”

under the name Vespa 50 Special. A rectangular handlebar head and cascade as well as 10-inch tyres and optimised brakes from the second revision onwards and a four-speed gearbox from the third revision onwards were released over time. Piaggio also presented the

With the Elettronica Traversi Tre, or ET3 for short, a model with electronic ignition and three overcurrent channels entered the series in 1976. This model also had many other improved details: a more powerful exhaust and a higher compression ratio allowed the Vespa Primavera 125 ET3 to make a real leap in performance. As a result, the scooter reached a top speed of 90 km/h with a powerful 7 hp. This made it the fastest 125cc version of its time and also boasted better response behaviour. Thanks to small highlights such as the rally stripes and the matching lettering on the mudguards and side covers, the model was also a visual treat.

52 MODEL HISTORY

Vespa PK (PK 50, PK 50 XL 2, PK 125, PK 125 Automatica, PK 125 ETS)

In 1983, Piaggio presented the Vespa PK series, which was visually orientated towards the angular shapes of the 1980s. This was clearly recognisable from the handlebars and the plastic cascade, which were no longer directly connected to the frame. The Vespa PK not only resembled the Vespa PX in terms of design, but also adopted its front wheel suspension, which is why the PK series can be seen as a kind of counterpart to the PX series. The Vespa PK 50 and PK 50 S also featured electronic ignition and a gearbox with 4-speed shifting. It had better indicators and an additional integrated storage compartment. The PK 50 received a final revision in 1990 as the XL 2, which had a new steering design with revised controls, further developed technology, modified bodywork with many futuristic elements made of plastic and a new glove compartment. Based on this, a sports version was offered in Italy in the form of the PK 50 HP4, which offered even more detailed changes. One year later, Piaggio

launched the PK 125. This was basically identical to the PK 50 models, but with more power. The 125 S was, as the name suggests, more sporty. In addition, the rear brake on the PK 125 Automatica was operated via the left lever on the handlebars. At the same time, Piaggio also produced the Vespa PK 125 ETS in two versions, which had a larger exhaust and the improved brake system of the XL 2 on board and reached an even higher speed. They are not only the sportiest versions of the Smallframe series, but are also regarded as the counterpart to the more powerful T5 from the Largeframe series of the 1980s.

Travelling by Vespa from Denmark To SIP

On Sunday 28 May 2023, we received a visit from Peter Lindschouw Pedersen from Greve, near Copenhagen, Denmark. He made his way to us with an upgraded 125 Vespa Smallframe from 1966, equipped with parts from SIP Perfor mance and Egig Performance. His adventure began at exactly 00:01 with the aim of reaching Lands berg am Lech, 1,000 kilometres away. Peter had a personal mis sion: to break the record of his col league Michael Hoby from the Co penhagen Scooter Club, who took 23 hours non-stop to reach Lands berg. 200 kilometres before the fi nish line, he began to have doubts about his plan: “I suddenly thought this was a pretty stupid idea, because I was very tired. I called my wife and she just said, ‚What are you waiting for! Drive on!‘“. Despite initial doubts and

tiredness, he reached SIP Scootershop at 9 pm the same day, setting the record at an impressive 21 hours. After a well-earned break and a warm welcome at SIP Scootershop, Peter‘s Vespa was prepared for the return journey. He was ceremoniously presented with the SIP passport sticker, which must be earned through such extraordinary achievements. Peter also became a member of the Iron Butt Association for riding 1,000 kilometres in one go - a remarkable achievement, especially under the difficult conditions, without a mobile phone on the handlebars and just following the instructions of the GPS lady. On 31 May, Peter began his return journey. We are eager to see how his adventure continues, wish him a safe journey in any case and salute his achievement. Ride on, Peter!

THE STORY OF SIP SCOOTERSHOP

EMPLOYEE JOCHEN

Actually, everything went according to plan for Jochen. In 1990, at the age of three, he came to Germany from the Romanian town of Mediasch with his parents and a younger brother. He attended primary school in Kaufering, Upper Bavaria, and in 2004 he completed his secondary education at the Realschule in the large district town of Landsberg am Lech. This was followed by training as an electronics technician as a civilian at the Penzing air base, then still a Bundeswehr site. The apprentice enjoyed life, had many friends, was in a relationship, loved sports (judo, snowboarding, mountain biking) and action. Only the subsequent work as a journeyman in a former bunker in Igling did not suit the young man, and in February 2008 he decided to seek his fortune in gastronomy. Two days before the opening of a restaurant in Kaufering, he and his buddies took a momentous trip to Hochsölden in Austria. It was 24 October 2009, a date Jochen will never forget. “I can still see it in front of me today. The sun was shining in a blue sky, the fresh snow was glittering like millions of diamonds and we were fooling around in the snow,” Jochen remembers. “Then I had the idea of falling headfirst into the snow. I fell so badly that my head got stuck in the deep snow and my body slid over it. I heard it crack and I felt a short pain. After that, from the fifth cervical vertebra, it tingled once through the whole body and I had no feeling in those places afterwards.”

TRANSPORT BY HELICOPTER

His friends thought he was joking when he said he could no longer move. Broken bones were something Jochen was used to through his many sporting activities, but at that moment he knew something bad had happened and his life was about to change. He was carefully turned onto

his back and after fifteen minutes the mountain rescue team appeared, but they quickly realised that Jochen could not be transported on the sledge. He was lucky because there was a ski race on the slope opposite and there was a helicopter there. The helicopter was requested and was there in a few minutes, but could not land because the terrain was too steep. So the victim was packed into a vacuum stretcher and flown down to the valley hanging on a rope. “On the bottom of the helicopter it said ‚Martin 375‘, I remember that clearly. And I was still annoyed that I was finally flying through the mountains but couldn‘t look around.” The transport ended at the university hospital in Innsbruck. After the X-ray, the doctors told him what he had already suspected: the fifth cervical vertebra was broken. In a three-hour operation, a titanium plate was inserted and attached to the fourth and sixth cervical vertebrae. Parts of the bone were taken from the pelvis and smeared into the

fracture site as a mush. “You may not be able to breathe on your own after the operation,” the doctor had said, “forever.” But Jochen was spared that. He woke up from the anaesthetic in a room with seven other patients, all of whom were in a coma. He couldn‘t move his fingers, but at least he could still move his hand. And he could breathe. When the doctor came, there was only one question Jochen asked him: “So, when will I be able to walk again?”

That would no longer be possible with this injury, was the “I HAVE AN AWESOME LIFE!”

May we introduce: our dispatch manager Jochen Jukresch

SIP INTERNAL 57

answer. “If you can drive independently with an electric wheelchair at some point, then a lot has already been achieved,” was the prognosis. “I thought to myself, I‘ll show him what I‘m made of,” Jochen recounts and gave himself a fighting spirit. A characteristic that was to have a decisive influence on the following years.

After eleven days, he was transferred to the accident clinic in Murnau, which enjoys an excellent reputation. The long process of rehabilitation began and was to last four months. Jochen had to learn everything anew and come to terms with the fact that he could not actually move anything from his neck upwards, except for his arms and hands. “Fortunately, I was young and very fit at the time. My body still wanted it. Today, I might not be able to make the transition. I was sure that I would leave Murnau running on two legs.”

RETURN TO LIFE

But first he had to learn to sit again, which took many days. And when he was finally able to use an active wheelchair, that was a big event. He was not to leave this wheelchair again until today, because he could no longer reactivate his legs. “Shit,” Jochen thought then for the first time. “I was 22, I had plans, I was finally earning money, I had a great girlfriend and I wanted to take off in life! And then this! I can‘t go to the toilet on my own anymore, I need help

for everything. I didn‘t even have the strength to lift the spoon from my plate to my mouth. Then I really went through a rough patch for a week. But my friends visited me every day and if I hadn‘t had them, I wouldn‘t be where I am today.” The stay in Murnau lasted four months and Jochen realised that he was not the first person to have something like this happen to him. He took up the fight and decided to make the best of his situation. A decision for life.

Next stop: three months in Bad Wildbad in the Black Forest for follow-up treatment. During this time, he changed his private living situation, because the flat on the third floor was of course completely unsuitable. His girlfriend and friends organised a new place to stay, the move and made everything handicapped accessible. “I was prepared for life outside the bubble hospital. Even today, I go to Bad Wildbad once a year for rehab. Finally, my girlfriend picked me up and I came to the new flat in Kaufering for the first time. It was an advantage that my girlfriend was in Munich studying all day, so I was forced to manage at home on my own. I did get meals brought in, but otherwise I was on my own. Eventually I got bored and had to figure out what else I wanted to do with my life.”

APPLICATION TO SIP SCOOTERSHOP

In 2011, Jochen took a so-called “work trial” to find out what job he was suited for. In July of the same year, the began retraining as an industrial clerk and two and a half years later successfully passed the examination at the IHK. A period followed in which he lost his zest for life again. His girlfriend left him and he received only rejections on his more than 90 job applications. He hit rock bottom in 2014. But then he received an offer from Basti Attenberger to take over the accounting for “Traditional-Motors” in Obermeitingen. There he met Ludwig Matt, who told him about SIP Scootershop. “Why don‘t you apply there,” Ludwig said. No sooner said than done. Two days later, Jochen was sitting at the table with SIP Scootershop boss Alex and started at Graf-Zeppelin-Straße in February 2015.

To this day, his area is the export of products that leave SIP Scootershop. He takes care of customs clearance and obtains quotations from shipping companies. “Everything that leaves the EU at SIP worth more than a thousand euros goes through me. The volume has now increased tenfold compared to the be-

ginning. I send around nine pallets a week all over the world. In the past, that was one every four months. I enjoy it, I like doing it and I think it‘s great that I can work at least 40 hours a week. So the second apprenticeship has really paid off.” He gets along well with his colleagues and the circumstances. However, some new employees have to get used to his crude humour (also about himself). “I am simply in good hands at SIP Scootershop and feel comfortable there.” “We are certainly not 100 per cent barrier-free yet, but it was even worse in the old premises on Graf-Zeppelin-Straße,” says Ralf Jodl, co-managing director of SIP Scootershop. “Where there is a will, there is usually a way. We can only encourage other companies to rely on employees like Jochen, because he has also brought about a positive change in the working atmosphere. Certain problems and aches and pains are simply put into perspective.” Sebastian Wiemer, Jochen‘s direct supervisor, can only agree: “My life often seems boring and dull compared to Jochen‘s, because I could do a lot more. It‘s really difficult not to get along with Jochen. After a short time, you completely fade out the fact that he is in a wheelchair. It‘s hard to imagine our team without Jochen. If he gets too cheeky, I just put his mobile phone on top of the cupboard.” Jochen says he has been

at peace with himself since 2015. He plays wheelchair rugby for the Chariots in Augsburg, still has a large circle of friends and jets around on his hand e-bike. Since October 2017, he has even had his own car, as a VW T6 was converted so that he can drive it by voice control. A whole new way of life, Jochen assures us, and an investment of 65,000 euros. He has also found a new life partner and looks forward to the future with optimism and joie de vivre. “I have everything I need,” he says with conviction, “and it‘s mainly thanks to my friends that I made it. I can‘t imagine it and I haven‘t met anyone yet who has made it on their own. It may sound stupid, but I can‘t say it any other way: I have a really awesome life.”

A SPORTY SIP PORDOI FLYSCREEN, SUITABLE FOR MANY VESPA MODELS - VINTAGE AND MODERN.

If you decide to fit a windshield to your Vespa it does not necessarily mean you are collecting your old age pension with it! Given the design of the Vespa, a windshield represents an enormous aerodynamic advantage. The B-side to these obvious gains is that most commonly available shields and even the smaller flyscreens look a little out of place, leaving the Vespa cursed with an OAP look. This is impossible with our SIP PORDOIflyscreens, as we considered both their function and appearance during their design.

Visit to Aschheim SIP meets DHL

Many see it as simple: one click on “order now” in the online shop and the desired item will be on your doorstep or ready for collection in 1-2 days. However, what happens after the order confirmation and the parcel on the doorstep remains a mystery to many online shoppers. Internally at SIP Scootershop, we generally achieve a daily fulfilment rate of 90%. Orders placed by 12 noon are dispatched on the same day thanks to our automated processes. But what happens after handover to service providers such as DHL seems like a drop in the ocean in comparison. While we send around 1,500 parcels a day, DHL sorts many times that number per hour at the Aschheim parcel centre. How do they manage that? What do they do differently and how can we further improve our quality? To find the answers, we visited the parcel centre in Aschheim near Munich, the most modern in Europe, due to open in 2023. Parcels move along sorting belts at 2.4 m/s, are scanned from six sides and identified. A sophisticated emergency system guarantees smooth operation, even in the event of belt failures. An impressive Swiss clockwork of parcels. The 176 metre long building processes up to 72,000 parcels per hour. Despite a lot of automation, human experience is irreplaceable, especially for complex tasks such as coordinating mail carts and post-processing shipments. Thanks to DHL, we have gained valuable insights that will improve our processes at SIP. We would like to thank the DHL employees for their commitment - you guys rock!

As part of his summer tour, Christian Doleschal, MEP and Chairman of the Junge Union Bayern, visited us on 2 August 2023. Among others, they were joined by the member of the state parliament Alex Dorow, the JU district chairman Marian Cammerer and assessor Lukas Besel. They were given a tour by our CEOs Alex and Ralf and were allowed to look behind the scenes of SIP Scootershop.

ANECDOTES, PHOTOVOLTAICS AND THE PETITION

The entrepreneurs gave an insight into the philosophy behind the combination of mail order, product development, flagship store and affiliated siperia under one roof. German bureaucracy, European regulations, supply chains and rising costs were also addressed. The history of the SIP Scootershop was entertaining, as the beginnings in the cellar and garage of

the parents‘ house provided plenty of material for anecdotes. Things got more serious when it came to the topic of photovoltaics, because we at SIP Scootershop are currently experiencing scenarios that would definitely fit into the famous Schilda. For example, we could feed a lot of electricity into the local grid through our system, but the infrastructure of the public utility company is already at its limit. The expansion of photovoltaics is supposed to triple, we can only use a third of the possible roof area, perspective for the future: none.

OUR PETITION

Our petition to the German Bundestag to raise the maximum permissible speed for mopeds with a capacity of up to 50 cc or for e-scooters from 45 to 60 km and to make this class of

vehicle attractive again is currently hanging in the air. We have collected well over 50,000 signatures, but no elected official can be found who is willing to accept them. The member of parliament for the Landsberg district, Michael Kießling (CSU), refuses to hand them over personally upon request. It would have a purely symbolic character. The visitors understood the problem, but could not offer any concrete help.

A pizza dinner at SIPERIA rounded off the visit of MEP Christian Doleschal. We were very pleased about the interest in our company.

Polini reinterprets in racing terms the most famous scooter of history with a wide range of sports components. The result? Unmatched fun.

The Ø58mm cylinder is cast in cast iron with 6 transfer lights. “Racing” diagram of distribution. The piston is gravity cast in light alloy. The head is cast in one piece; to increase the heat dissipation, additional wings have been created also under the head level. The compression ratio has been designed to obtain the maximum performance.

Munich, September 2023 Vespa Corso

In addition to the Vespa Corso in May on Ascension Day, the Protestant pastor Friedemann Steck has also been organising a September edition for a few years now. This is on the so-called Italian Weekend at the Wiesn. Somehow it fits quite well to make the city, full of Italians, the northernmost city in Italy with a Vespa Corso. About 400 scooter riders gathered at the Erlöserkirche in Munich, there was singing, laughing, a Kaffee Ape delivered

delicious cappuccino and the police accompanied the Corso as usual. The same thing twice a year, but always great. Especially with the dream weather this year, 18° and a bright blue sky. Afterwards we went to the Wiesn and had a mass of beer and a chicken in the sun. Thanks Friedemann for the great event, a nice end to the Vespa season in Munich. And hopefully there will be a few more beautiful days with the Vespa when the Indian Summer begins!

VESPA CORSO 67

Vespa Club Rosario meeting in Argentina

What do the football coach César Luis Menotti, the footballers Ángel Di María and Lionel Messi have in common with the Cuban national hero Che Guevara? They were all born in Argentina‘s third largest city: Rosario. And that‘s exactly where José “Pachu” Pasciullo sent us a wonderful report from, because there is also a colourful and lively Vespa and scooter scene on the other side of the world, which regularly meets up for rides and festivals. Welcome to the XXI National and International Meeting of Vespa Clubs in Rosario, Argentina, 2023.

68 VESPA CLUB ROSARIO
Rosario

From 10 to 12 November 2023, over 250 Vespa enthusiasts from all over the country and other Latin American nations such as Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia gathered in Rosario, Argentina, for the 21st National and International Vespa Meeting. This event attracted members of numerous clubs, including the Vespa Club Argentina and local groups from Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Bahía Blanca, La Plata, Córdoba, Formosa, San Juan and Santiago de Chile, complemented by the

hosts from the Rosario Vespa Club. Over the course of three days, various events were held in Rosario and in neighbouring Funes, Santa Fe. On the opening day, 10 November, the accreditation took place in the “Vladimir Mikielievich” City Museum, followed by a night-time Vespa parade. The highlight was the reception by the Italian consul Marco Bocchi at the Italian consulate in Rosario, where the participants brought the Italian spirit to life with their Vespas.

AN ITALIAN WEEKEND IN ARGENTINA

On the morning of Saturday 11 November, the National Historical Monument of the Flag, the cradle of Argentina‘s “La Celeste y Blanca”, became the meeting point for around 250 Vespa riders. The main tour of the Vespa meeting began here. The route took the riders along the picturesque coast of the Paraná River, over the important Rosario-Victoria Bridge, a key point in the Mercosur transport network. Their next destination was the town of Funes, where they experienced the local hospitality with a treat of “choripanes” and traditional Argentine “asado” cooked on the “estaca”. The return to Rosario was just as eventful, with a “sunset” at the “Motoplex Rosario” (Sport Adventure), which was characterised by Italian flair. Christa Solbach, President of the International Vespa Clubs, enriched the event with an interactive speech. She honoured Salvador Mateo Ruiz, founder of the first Argentinian Vespa Club. The evening was crowned by a gala dinner at the “Club de Velas de Rosario”, a prestigious yacht club. The weekend ended on Sunday 12 November with a breakfast at “La Casona”, where the Vespa enthusiasts said goodbye to each other and toasted to the next big Latin American Vespa event. Special mention for the organisers of the event, Rosario Vespa Club, its president Gabriel Bricco, and its directors: Salvador Mateo Ruiz; Andres Vigna; Juan Ignacio Dris; Javier Dris; Mauricio Lopez Salvatierra; Marcelo Pecoraro; Jorge Lucero Eseverri; Maximiliano Agri; Patricio Oliva; Alberto Estrada Ariel Echeverría; Juan P. Cespedes, Emilio Bolner and José “Pachu” Pasciullo.

SIP Scootershop Team Summer Party 2023

At the moment, our neighbours in Munich are all about Wiesnbrenzn, chicken and freshly tapped beer on tap, and that includes us. Just recently, we disguised our belated summer party as a pre-Wiesn in an exclusive frame and celebrated our own private Oktoberfest. In blessed weather conditions we had chicken and knuckles from Hähnchenschmaus in Germaringen, freshly tapped Augustiner beer supplied by Getränke Schöpf in Penzing, resche Wiesnbrezn from the Manhardt bakery, Brotzeitbrettl from the Moser butcher‘s shop

and the Lechrain brass band tirelessly played piece after piece and of course also the “Prosit der Gemütlichkeit”. A sensational start for big and small SIP employees, because the bouncy castle, which was selflessly provided by the VR-Bank, was also loudly bounced around like crazy until the Dolls.

Many thanks to all the hard-working hands who lent a hand and chapeau to the makers of the creative salad and dessert creations for our varied buffet.

IT WAS TRULY A DREAM COME TRUE.

244cc and 252cc for all Vespa PX 200cc engines with a perfect “plug and play” assembly. The displacement of 244cc and 252cc was achieved using a 72mm piston and a special 60mm or 62mm stroke crankshaft with 127mm connecting rod, removing the cylinder barrel “collar”, so it will not be necessary to bore the engine casing for assembly anymore. The performance is remarkable, but what impresses is the big power and torque without vibrations, a kit developed for touring use that does not require special technical knowledge for assembly. The cylinder kit can be fitted on rotary valve or reed valve.

Our fundraising campaigns SIP AID 2023

JANUARY: SIP SCOOTERSHOP DONATES

€3,000 TO HUMANITÄRE HILFE E.V.

We have been supporting the association Humanitäre Hilfe e.V., run by Landsberg cardiologist Dr Soeren Gatz, for many years. A whole series of retired doctors are not improving their handicap on the golf course, but rather the healthcare system in Cameroon and Tanzania. Without any organisational overhead, but with a great deal of passion and

commitment, the aid reaches the places where it is most urgently needed. Our donation will be used to purchase a transoesophageal ultrasound probe, which will benefit the St Benedict Monastery Hospital in Ndanda, southern Tanzania. Doctors use this method to examine the various heart chambers, vessels and heart valves from the oesophagus: There are only a few millimetres between the oesophagus and the heart, so razor-sharp images of the moving heart and its structures are produced, which

significantly improves diagnostics. Dr Gatz will personally hand over the device on 14 February 2023 and offer a special transoesophageal echocardiography course for local doctors so that this modern and now indispensable technology is also available in southern Tanzania.

APRIL: SIP SCOOTERSHOP DONATES 500 € TO THE RUETHENFESTVEREIN E.V.

Every 4 years, a wonderful medieval children‘s

Ralf Jodl SIP Scootershop

festival called Ruethenfest takes place in Landsberg. More than 1000 children take part and many adults work on a voluntary basis. We support the Ruethenfestverein with a donation of €500.

AUGUST: SIP SCOOTERSHOP DONATES €5,000 TO HUMANITÄRE HILFE E.V.

We receive a message from Dr Soeren Gatz from the association Humanitäre Hilfe e.V.: “I am fighting for the life of a seven-year-old boy, Alan Christ, with a congenital heart defect (pulmonary stenosis, atrial septal defect) in Foumban/Cameroon and have presented his findings to Prof. Ewert at the German Heart Centre in Munich and have been able to get an early surgery date for him. So far we have only raised €7,000 of the €12,000 needed and the date is getting closer and closer, so I am now asking all my friends and relatives to help us in an emergency. As you know, I have been working in Cameroon for 12 years now

and have successfully operated on several children with heart disease at the Cardiac Centre in Shissong, Cameroon. The civil war has destroyed this centre and I now have to bring Alan to Germany so that he doesn‘t die like other children before him on the waiting list. After handing over the remaining €5,000 to Dr Gatz, we kept our fingers crossed. The operation at the German Heart Centre Munich on 9 November 2023 was a complete success! Fortunately, we were able to help Alan. He was able to leave hospital after just three days and has since shown an impressive improvement in his physical and mental activity. He goes sledging, plays table tennis and has developed a healthy appetite: “We are overjoyed and incredibly grateful. We have been warmly welcomed by everyone here. A huge gift!”

NOVEMBER: SIP SCOOTERSHOP DONATES

€200 TO THE LIONS CLUB

As every year, we donate €200 to the Lions Club Landsberg am Lech for the Advent Calendar. For several years now, the Lions Advent Calendar has been an indispensable companion through the pre-Christmas period for many people in the Landsberg district: instead of chocolate, for 6 euros you get 25 chances to win prizes totalling over 28,000 euros. The LIONS Club uses the proceeds from the sale of the calendar to help selected projects.

Scooter meeting near Rastede Vesbeachi 2023

On 01 and 02 September 2023, around 600 participants with more than 500 Classic Scooters met on the beach near Rastede.

Within the last three years, the open-brand meeting “Vesbeachi” has developed from an insider tip to a cult event where friends of Vespa, Lambretta, Schwalbe and other types meet.

The highlight, among many other activities, is the time race on the beach. Jelto Gerdes has sent us many excellent photos of the event,

which you should definitely take a look at.

The date for “Vesbeachi 2024” has already been set: mark 20 and 21 September in your Calendar. SIP Scootershop will also be happy to support the event again as a sponsor.

PRAISE 83
84 30 YEARS OF SIP SCOOTERSHOP
Alex and Ralf on the Furka Pass on the way to Interlaken June 2023

SIP Scootershop 30 YEARS

How time flies. Wasn‘t it only yesterday that we celebrated 25 years of SIP Scootershop and the day before yesterday our 20th anniversary? It‘s hard to believe that this year we can already look back on 30 years of SIP Scootershop . Many of you have been with us for many years and know our history. It is told in detail on our website and in the videos we made in 2019 and 2024.

AROUND THE WORLD

The last five years have been characterised by the global coronavirus pandemic, but thanks to our dedicated employees, loyal customers and reliable suppliers, we have survived without any major damage. The crisis hotspots on this planet also influence our business activities, as SIP Scootershop is not decoupled from global developments. On the contrary:

CEO Ralf Jodl visited business partners and friends in the USA, Australia, Thailand and the Philippines in early 2024 to gain an overview of the current situation on the scooter market. Ralf summarises his Vespa & Lambretta World Tour: “Even though the scooter scenes and their demographics are very different from country to country, it was inspiring to experience the passion for Lambretta and Vespa on

the different continents. This motivates us for the coming decades!”

ONLINE AND OFFLINE

What is SIP Scootershop currently focussing on? Our core business is and remains the service for our customers and the availability of thousands of items relating to modern and classic Vespa and Lambretta. We are also keeping an eye on the e-bike and E-Scooter markets and we will not ignore the boom in electric scooters. “Times are changing and customers‘ needs have changed over the years. SIP Scootershop has to adapt if we want to be equipped for the coming years,” analyses CEO Alex Barth, “but that doesn‘t mean that our love for the old Vespas is growing cold.” The product developers at SIP Scootershop have many projects in their drawers and on their hard drives. The company‘s own SIP Pordoi, SIP Performance, SIP Style and SIP Spareparts series remain important components in the range. New products appear almost daily and can be found in the News section on our website. Our activities on YouTube are extremely successful, where SIP Scootershop TVenjoys great popularity. Around 50,000 subscribers are an obligation

Dietrich Limper SIP Scootershop
30 YEARS OF SIP SCOOTERSHOP 85

to continue producing high-quality content, as we have done in the 700 or so videos we have produced so far. Useful and instructive tutorials, product presentations and tuning instructions are presented alongside travel reports from our tours

and the “Sexiest Workshops” and “Custom Scooter Creations” series. We are approaching 260,000 followers on Facebook and more than 100,000 on Instagram. “We will continue to expand our digital offerings,” says Ralf, looking ahead, “including the blogs on our website. Still under construction is an extensive Scooter Model base. An online reference work where we would like to have all the scooter models in the world stored with all the information.”

PEOPLE AND ENGINES

HERE‘S TO THE NEXT 30 YEARS!

Personal contact with the scene and with customers has always been important to us. The Flagship storewith adjoining Italian restaurant “Siperia” in Landsberg still serves as a contact point and meeting place for scooter riders from all over Germany and beyond. Once a month, friends of horsepower meet at our performance test bench, while connoisseurs can enjoy fine Italian food and drinks at the “Aperitivo” next door. it will be “loud and dirty” again this year at “Matscho Karatscho #3”. On 27 July 2024, cross-scooters will once again race around our in-house

track and provide a real spectacle. From April, our employees will be swarming out in all directions to visit scooter-related events and meetings in half of Europe. And last but not least, theOpen Day on 18 May will be the highlight of the year, as we celebrate 30 years of SIP Scootershop with you. Even after more than 30 years in the scooter scene, it‘s the people who keep Alex and Ralf going. It‘s the friendships, petrol talks and rides. “I‘m still keen on the whole subject and am fascinated by the solidarity of scooter fans all over the world,” says Ralf and his partner adds: “After three decades of SIP, I‘m still keen on the latest parts, whether from small or large suppliers. Once you‘ve been infected with the Vespa virus, you‘ll never let go of this passion.”

Sexiest Workshops EGIG Performance

This visit in the frame of our series “Sexiest Workshops” was actually long overdue! It‘s just over 230 kilometres from Landsberg to Klausen (Chiusa) in South Tyrol, Italy. The route leads through wonderful landscapes, perfect for a ride on a scooter. But Jesco only manages the last few metres on a Vespa (without a Helmet!) before entering the legendary halls of the “legendary Vespa tuner” (Jesco‘s own words) Erich “Egig” Oberpertinger: EGIG Performance. It‘s not really Jesco‘s first visit

to Egig, but it is his first visit to the new workshop. And it‘s a sight to behold.

A PASSION FOR THE SMALLFRAME

IN THE HALLS OF THE “LEGENDARY VESPA TUNER” (JESCO‘S OWN WORDS)

Egig has been riding Vespas since he was twelve or 13 years old. Not always legally, but all within the statute of limitations. A few years later, Egig was also active on the racing scene and took to the 400 metre track on a Falc bullet, winning the race even without second gear. “That was the foun-

90 SEXIEST WORKSHOPS

dation for everything else,” recalls the trained chef. “I was fully infected and started with it Curly exhaust systems which were hardly available on the market.”

THE YOUNG, ENTERPRISING MAN FROM SOUTH TYROL IS ON A ROLL.

In the years that followed, Egig continued to push the boundaries and was particularly fond of the Smallframe Vespa. “The first blatant Engine was a Falc with just under 50 hp and I was ridiculed a lot with that. But then I won the dyno test with a five-hp advantage and that gave me a boost. I realised that I could do something even without a clue.”

The rest is history. Today, Egig has a clue and mainly builds “normal” Engines for everyone and only pursues his “crazy projects” on the side. But it‘s best to let Egig tell you all about

it himself and give you a tour of his new workshop and production hall. He hasn‘t worked as a chef since 2018, but what he does at EGIG Performance for smallframe Vespas is a feast for gourmets. Touring engines at their finest.
