THE City Health Office (CHO) reported that 15 fourth year students taking up medical courses were infected with COVID-19 two weeks after they reported to in-person classes. Dr. Ashley Lopez, CHO head, said on Mon day that this was based on the monitoring of the of fice as these students were required to undergo chaintranscription-polymerasereversereactiontestsbefore they were allowed to go back to their classes. Those infected were about 10 percent of the total student population in that level, said Lopez, adding that they either showed no symptoms or manifested very mild ones. “These are seemingly asymptomatic to mild cases so they are not required (to undergo) hospitalization. And most of them magundergo lang og seven days of isolation in their homes or quarantining, then after that, they can go back to class,” Lopez said. He added the cases are not a reason to suspend face-to-face classes. “So far wala man ta’y ginaconsider na ingana (sus pension of classes) be cause although we still have numbers for cases of COVID, dili na man siya grabe. “We are now seeing the inefficiency of our electric cooperative. Convocation conducted for first-year students

The convocation featured alumna Atty. Janis Louis Esparcia as the guest speaker who shared her reflections on her personal journey at the university. Esparcia, who is now a lawyer and Davao City assistant city administrator, previously worked as a Research Associate at the UP Mindanao College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Altia Fe De Gracia, a first-year student of the BS Biology program, represented the freshmen batch as the student with the highest university predicted grade (1.840) this academic year. Her speech highlighted the hope to rise again amidst the educational crisis during this pandemic.

As Rhaenyra Targaryen said herself, “Everyone says Targaryens are closer to gods than to men, but they say that because of our dragons. Without them, we’re just like everyone else.” As the case with GOT, fans do not only love the characters of the show but as well as the fantastical creatures found in its world. If GOT thrilled fans with Dae nerys’ three dragons Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon, HOTD will bring more fire to the show as it has been confirmed that nine out of the 17 Targaryen dragons will be featured in Season 1. 4. Surprising Plot Episode 1 of HOTD by itself had al ready given enough hints to the audience that they have to brace for the unpredict able plot that its predecessor has always been known for.

DAVAOEÑO fans of the hit serial and pop culture phenomenon Game of Thrones (GOT) returned to Westeros once again as HBO dropped its spin-off, House of the Dragon, on August 21.

5. Strong Women Characters Who run the world? Girls! HOTD, just like the original franchise, continues to inspire women to take their place in society through the show. West eros is a world where women are allowed to be heroines and we are definitely seeing female characters slaying stereotypes and proving to society that they are more than just their wombs.

Fans of the beloved TV franchise were teased in Davao City as SM Lanang Premier launched its House of the Dragon exhibit at the mall's atrium on September 2 complete with a cosplayer portraying Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, one of the protagonists in the prequel. Shoppers will continue to have a glimpse of Westeros at the mall until September 11. With three episodes down so far, House of the Dragon (HOTD) proved to be another phenomenon as its premiere became the most viewed show of the year, surpassing Stranger Things 4. Here are some of the reasons why GOT fans continue to “bend the knee" to the prequel: 1. Plenty of Characters to Root For HOTD showrunners have done a great job in casting actors for the spin-off. The actors did justice to their characters very well with their superb acting prow ess. The charisma and dynamics between the actors and the characters they portray in the show immediately make fans root for them. 2. Political Intrigue Just like GOT, politics make the world go round. The political squabble and rivalry over the Iron Throne are at the center of all the conflicts in the show. The games, indeed, continue with HOTD and fans are excited to know how the show will unfold in the coming episodes as characters outsmart each other.

MANILA – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Tuesday said there will be more inspections to be conducted in coordina tion with other agencies to uncover allegedly hoarded stocks of sugar.

The continuous inspection of warehouses believed to be storing sugar came following the unauthorized issuance of Sugar Order No. 4, which was earlier rejected by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who concurrently serves as Agricul ture Secretary and chairperson of the Sugar Regulatory Ad ministration (SRA). The order would have allowed the importation of 300,000 metric tons of sugar. At the same time, the bu reau is set to start on Tuesday the inventory of the goods, including local and imported sugar worth PHP1.8 billion, that were found inside a ware house in Nasugbu, Batangas after conducting an inspection on Sept. 4. Each sack con tains 50 kilograms of sugar. Armed with a Letter of Authority (LOA) and Mission Order (MO) issued by Ruiz, the team arrived at Central Asucarera Don Pedro in Ba rangay Lumbangan in Nas ugbu, Batangas where they found imported goods, as well as local and imported sugar. “We consider this a huge breakthrough in our ongo ing campaign against sugar hoarding. IF there was one thing that naturally slid down our memory during the time of the pandemic, it was the almostautomatic response of everyone to religiously keep abreast with what was needed for the morrow. In terms of food supplies for example, those last four words may have spelled the dif ference between an empty shelf at the grocery store and a filled cupboard at home that could last us even short of a nuclear attack. Alas, while that possibility of a can-filled cabi net may have only been real for those who could afford such, the dream of having such remains and still stands as something to look up to or seek to have. While we’re thankful that dire time has passed, the lesson of being prepared has remained, much like the one taken from the ant and the grasshopper. However, man does not live by bread alone. And biblical or not, there is even a saying in the local lingo that goes, if someone throws stones at you, throw bread instead. So, it’s not at all that important. Ach so, where does this rambling go, coming from someone who has just missed the early morning man-on-tricycle selling pandesal? A life lesson. A dear friend just out of lifethreatening surgery had just intimated to me that for her, life or a new lease on it, is indeed beautiful and there must be more important things to keep stock of. Among these are the intangibles that truly matter, compared to the materials that we fret about having.

With the Singaporean discovery, according to the post at Facebook, the city states’ Health Ministry believes that the CoViD 19 pandemic, despite its millions of people killed, is one global fraud that shook the health and eco nomic foundation of the entire universe.

Here is this Facebook post supposedly attributed to the Singapoe Ministry of Health regarding the discovery by doctors in that small city state that after all, CoViD 19 is not caused by a virus but by a bacteria exposed to a radia tion. According to the post Singaporean doctors violated the established protocol of the World Health Organization (WHO) by conducting an autopsy on a CoViD 19 patient who died earlier.

As for me, I would say, Lord I first need “patiencia”. That could either be the sweet food variety or its literal meaning of having the ability to sup press restlessness. In any order and if need be, a whole cupboard of it.

True or not however, it is now clear that whether the CoViD 19 illness is caused by a deadly virus, or an exceed ingly harmful bacteria, one thing clear is that based on the present number of pandemic victims’ newly afflicted, new deaths, attack rate, etc., etc. the world seems to be winning the war on a universal level. Slowly though, but quite surely.

WHY are some peo ple who are hiding their identities under the cloak of the cyber mantle in sisting that there is a surge in criminality all over Davao City and the Southern Mindanao Region?Who are they try ing to discredit, the new city mayor; the police? Frankly we do not have any idea who. But we are certain their objective is to start creating a mindset for people residing in Davao City and those who intend to travel in this southern Metropolis that the place is no heaven as they might have been made to believe. But personally, even if we do not agree with netizens that the city is into opening itself as haven of criminals, we believe that the authorities, civilian or the police or military, should not ignore this baseless assertion. As we have noted earlier the first sector to react negatively to the claim of rising criminalities, is the police organization. And rightly so because the men in uniform are supposed to be the guardians of the long-known city’s peace and order situation. However, the one reaction we are eagerly waiting for is that which comes from newly-minted City Mayor Baste Duterte. We don’t know how he feels being suspected as weak in governance because of his failure to deal with a problem which is intended to pot him on the edge.

The autopsy result, according to the Singaporean doctors who conducted the procedure, the bacteria is the one that made the patient’s blood clot with the coagulated liquid blocking every important organs of the human body where the flow of blood is extremely critical.

As a result, according to the medical practitioners con ducting the autopsy, the CoViD patients already getting blood clots in his or her body becomes easier victim of the deadly illness. Let us try to compare this amount with other econo mies for a perspective. With a little candor, I tried to compare Mindanao with nations in Europe. I found out that Mindanao’s output is equal to the GDP of European countries like Slovenia, Lithuania, Cyrus and Iceland.

Come to understand that Mindanao’s 25.6 million population is bigger than Australia’s 25 million and bigger than Taiwan’s 23 million. We have a very huge market in our backyard. We only need to invite investors.

MinDA and Mindanao Development dedicated office to look well into these dimensions and bring into the fore the root cause of poverty and neglect that befell the island. Many years ago, the regional agencies, LGUs, and other development organizations work and plan in silos leading to inefficiency, ineffectiveness and project fail ures.So MinDA integrated and linked the sectors with local and national initiatives to ensure rationalized and complementary developments. Mindanao is home to 25.6 million individuals which profess history and tradition tracing back to centuries ago. MinDA understands this nuance. It is the sole agency that can put together all the perspectives towards a trajec tory of common growth. In effect, Mindanao was able to improve its share to the national coffer, in 2020, contributed 17.2% to the nation’s GDP. This is equivalent to USD 53.6 billion.

COUNCILOR PILAR BRAGA

VERY recently, I visited some LGUs outside of Davao Region. And the communicator in me cannot hold back when an opportunity to share about Mindanao and MinDA unfolds.Well, it is easy to talk about Mindanao, but what is not easy is to change the long-held impression of others, especially those outside Mindanao, that Mindanao is the remote cousins of the other two islands in terms of development. However, plenty of those I was able to talk to are convinced of the transformation happening in their com munities. They can tell clearly and describe well the general atmosphere of peace in Mindanao, far and different dec adesButback.allow me to talk about the agency which works behind the scene so that we can all enjoy the peace and development dividends. The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) was created in 2010 by virtue of Republic Act 9996. MinDA is tasked to coordinate inter-regional and Mindanao-wide initiatives, including being the Philip pine’s Coordinating Office for BIMP-EAGA, to ensure the active participation of Mindanao and Palawan; harmonize efforts in addressing critical issues involv ing Mindanao; and integrate programs to ensure wellorchestrated growth to deliver positive impact the lives of allMindanaoMindanawons.hasdistinct set of opportunities and chal lenges. The unique social, cultural, political, environmen tal and economic configuration of Mindanao requires a

Slovenia is as large as Mindanao given the former’s GDP of USD 53.59 billion, a little lower than Lithuania with USD 56.55 billion. Mindanao is twice bigger than Cyprus with the latter’s output of USD24.61 billion, and that of Iceland’s GDP (USD 21.72 billion). Another advantage of Mindanao is its people.

TODAY, allow me to honor a woman who spent the best years of her life fighting for justice for oppressed women by lending her voice to countless voiceless women.

There is the need to orchestrate all these. Thus, MinDA is here to ensure that the vision for Mindanao happens in the soonest and familiar future, a future of peace and in progress.

Nelia Sancho, the Beauty Queen turned activist is gone but her works of mercy and the empowering of women will remain a legacy in the annals of Gender Equality, Justice and Development. Nelia delos Reyes Sancho was crowned Queen of the Pacific in 1971 and held other titles as a testimony to her beauty. She could have led a very comfortable life as she was a much-sought fashion model but her restless soul was in search for a more meaningful life… the rest is history. In the story of beauty and fashion in the Philippine scenario she was one of the two widely recognized title holders who opted to undergo rural immersion and integra tion with the poorest of the poor in her attempt to advance the cause in ending poverty and structural imbalances. She had led a revolutionary life and made a leap in taking up the cudgel for the grassroots women in the public arena

Nelia Sancho… the Voice of the Voiceless, Oppressed Women when she visibly assumed major tasks in the broadening of the women’s movement in the country. Where gender mainstreaming was still at its infancy, Nelia Sancho already chanted, elucidated and cheered well the aspirations of women to be free, safe, and live in a just Amongsociety.hercountless achievements, Nelia pioneered the framework for an alternative early childhood educa tion that centers on the child innate capacity with the sup port system from the social environments, thus, support structures such as day care centers mushroomed all over the country. For Nelia, parenting is the key to community development and empowerment. With her advocacy for children’s rights, she became a convenor and trustee the Defense for Children International. Davao City is home to Nelia as she practically grew up here with residence in Barrio Obrero. I remember when we were crafting the Women Development Code in the late 90’s, Nelia Sancho was on hand inspiring and guiding us in framing this landmark ordinance that serves as the “bible” for women empowerment in our beloved Davao City. In a democracy, we may find ourselves in the differ ent sides of the Great Divide… left, right, center, left of center, right of center… we may not agree or disagree on certain ideological issues, but one thing is certain, we women agree to unite on our shared vision of empower ing the women, on gender equality and development, on justice and freedom, family values, nationalism and love of country.NeliaSancho was the cement that bind us together and for that we, women salute her and will forever remember her in the annals of the Women’s Movement. Thank you, Nelia… rest in peace now. (fromNEW...frontpage)

The Japanese Consulate in Davao is the first outside Manila, established in 1920 when the city became home to many Japanese who arrived from Northern Luzon to set up plantations and who became very productive. In 1941, the population grew to 40,000 which earned the city the moniker “Little Tokyo.” This paper, Mindanao Times, was a former Japanese paper called the Davao Shimbun. There is no doubt about the great contribution of Japan to the development of Mindanao through devel opment projects and assistance including ensuring that the peace process in the Bangsamoro region is achieved. Meanwhile, friendships are strengthened at the com munity level which augurs well for long-term relations and diplomacy. (Photos by Villa Villacin staff) WARM WELCOME...

EXTRAJUDICIAL SETTLEMENT OF ESTATE OF THE LATE GERALD ESTOQUE PALENCIA WITH DEED OF DONATION

TACLOBAN CITY – The Bu reau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is height ening its monitoring in Ma tarinao Bay in Eastern Samar (Region 8) after laboratory results confirmed samples col lected in the area are positive for paralytic shellfish poison ing (PSP).Even after releasing the result, the bureau has been collecting water and shellfish meat samples weekly to detect the presence of red tide toxins and warn affected communi ties against gathering, trading, and consumption of shellfish. “We have been coordi nating with local government units and local police to help us implement the shellfish ban in order to safeguard commu nities,” said Christine Gresola, information officer of the BFAR regional office here. On Aug. 18, BFAR’s laboratory in this city found the presence of red tide in Matarinao Bay and it was con firmed through further tests by the BFAR main office on Sept. 2, according to Gresola. The phenomenon has recurred in the bay six months after it was declared toxinfree.Currently, Matarinao is the only bay in the region positive for red tide. The bay covers the coast al waters of General MacAr thur, Hernani, Quinapondan and Salcedo in Eastern Samar province.Fish, squid, crab, and shrimp gathered from these areas are safe to eat provided all entrails are removed and washed thoroughly with run ning water before cooking. The BFAR asked local government units to heighten their watch against the gather ing, trading, and consumption of shellfish and other bivalve marine products to prevent PSP.PSP occurs from ingest ing bivalve shellfish, such as mussels, oysters, and clams with red tide toxins. Red tide is a term used to describe a phenomenon where a high concentration of algae discolors the water. (PNA)
