Mindanao farmers secure P8-M sales at

Coffee Expo

MINDANAO coffee farmers successfully secured P8 million in negotiated sales during the Philippine Coffee Expo 2023 held at the World Trade Center Manila.

This came after the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) In Mindanao featured and linked their to various buyers during the recent Philippine Coffee Expo (PCE) held June 2-4, 2023, at World Trade Center in Manila.

Japanese green coffee beans (GCB) buyer Shigeru Chiba, sourcing consultant for a Japanese coffee chain in Japan, is set to visit Davao City this month to establish market tie-ups with local coffee farmers.

Apart from market linkage, DA-PRDP helped the 11 coffee farmers' associations improve product quality through post-harvest facilities and equipment.

"Aside from international buyers, PCE 2023 also linked our farmers to institutional buyers, which include Comfoods, a manufacturer and distributor of packaged roasted coffee under different brands such as Café Puro, Café Excelente, and Café Bueno," says Cherrilyn Baylon, PRDP enterprise development specialist.

The sales generated at the PCE 2023 serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of both the coffee farmers and DA-PRDP. This achievement not only boosts the income and livelihoods of coffee farmers but also contributes to the overall growth and development of the coffee industry in Mindanao.

"With PRDP's continuous support and promising market tie-ups with groups such as Aj-Sewing LLC, the future looks promising for Mindanao coffee farmers," Baylon adds. (PR/ DA-PRDP)

NAAWAN, Misamis Oriental (MindaNews) -- Are we in the volcanic season of the year?

Three volcanoes in the country are currently restive, namely, Mayon, Taal, and Kanlaon.

Mayon volcano is now at Alert Level 3. Communities inside the six-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ are being evacuated. This is due to the danger of other volcanic hazards in the surrounding area.

Meanwhile, Mt.Taal and Mt. Kanlaon are placed on Alert 1 because both are pointing towards higher chances of a phreatic eruption.

The latest worst eruption of Taal was on January 12, 2020. The volcano spewed ashes that blanketed Calabarzon, Metro Manila, and parts of Central Luzon for some days. It displays similar unrest of late and is placed at Alert Level 1.

Kanlaon volcano has been under Alert Level 1 since 2020 due to an increase in low-frequency volcanic earthquakes and has also emitted over 1,000 tons of sulfur dioxide lately (June 5) by phreatic eruption.

According to experts of the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), while magmatic eruptions are still more dangerous than phreatic eruptions, the latter can be worrisome. Phreatic eruptions generally occur without precursory signals. In recent years, phreatic eruptions have, accordingly, killed more than magmatic eruptions.

Preemptive evacuation of residents in PDZ saves lives and prevents unnecessary injuries. The condition, however, in evacuation centers is very much wanting. Tents are overly congested and hot for a lack of proper ventilation. Sanitation facilities are inadequate. The heat and unsanitary conditions make the elderly and children

the heinous crime committed on a lady architect from Calinan, Davao City? Have not the police been able to identify the owner of the tricycle? We are certain that the unit’s owner is from Calinan or some nearby barangays. It can clearly be established with the suspects' identities and their residences. All of them are from Calinan districts. Therefore, the owner is from Calinan. After all, he/she could not have entrusted his vehicle to be driven by someone he/she does not know personally.

vulnerable to respiratory illness and other diseases.

In the case of Mayon evacuees, to stay in the refuge for a month or two is torture. Reasons why, despite the risk and hazards, many would like to return to their homes after a few days' stay in the evacuation sites.

There are always limitations in what the government authorities can do to make mass evacuation well-provided and comfortable. Anywhere, the reality is that the longer the evacuation period in a place, the greater the discomfort and suffering of the evacuees. This is a given, considering the price of survival. Nothing much can be done about it.

Anyway, on volcanic eruptions, one in June is worth recalling; it put the country on the map.

On June 15, 1991, Mt. Pinatubo, a long-dormant volcano in Zambales, blew its top in one of the biggest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century, killing hundreds of people, destroying an incalculable worth of infrastructures and properties, natural waterways, and impairing agricultural productivity in lahar-covered farms for years. The preemptive mass evacuation days prior to the eruption prevented the catastrophic loss of lives. The preemptive evacuation resulted from the US Geodetic and Seismology forecast of the imminence of an eruption.

the volcanic ashes spewed by Mt. Pinatubo 40 kilometers up in the skies reportedly covered the earth’s atmosphere for some four years blocking much of solar radiation and cooling the planet during that period.

(MindaViews is the opinion section of MindaNews. William R. Adan, Ph.D., is retired professor and former chancellor of Mindanao State University at Naawan, Misamis Oriental)

And we disagree with the reasoning of some law enforcers that there are so many units of ombac tricycles in by looking into the records of buyers in motorcycle dealers closest to the Calinan area. After all, there are only a handful of dealers of ombac-type tricycle bodies.

What about the status of another celebrated case of murder (or was it downgraded to homicide?) of a woman who was reported to be engaged in some businesses and doing modeling on the side? The victim, who resided in a subdivision in Mintal, Davao City, was alleged to be a paramour of an Army Brigadier General who was once the head of the Presidential Security Group. He was court-martialed for his administrative infractions. But the latest we heard was only the announcement by the Philippine Army that the court martial proceeding was already underway. As to what happened now, some three weeks after the supposed start of the court martial hearing, the Army has not given or released any update. As to the criminal cases against the alleged mastermind general and his cohorts, well, just like the court-martial proceedings, the criminal cases appear to be slowly “lost in translation.”

The investigators, both from the police and the National Bureautor. But for some reason, the investigating prosecutor did not the prosecutor downgraded the case to simple homicide.

The relatives of the young victim were reported to have appealed the resolution with the Department of Justice. Until now, we have not heard of any development. We suggest that the family of the slain youth must ask their lawyer to get in touch with the media and give them a lowdown of what has transpired since they made their appeal.

And there’s our personal query about when will the hundreds of garbage bins delivered by the City Environment barangays in rural areas. Until now, these have not been disof their household garbage.

We have been personally making it somewhat our crusade because the bins were purchased with people’s money before the 2019 election and delivered to the barangays in the third and second districts, and even possibly in some remote pandemic. Until now, the garbage bins are still lying idle, piled in some corners of the barangay hall compounds or at the sides of the covered courts. Some of the bins’ piles are now slowly covered with grasses.

What we cannot understand is why the local government of Davao City purchased the garbage receptacles when in the end, it does not have the means to distribute the same to where these can be put to use according to its purpose. The CENRO just delivered and seemingly forgot about it.

Will anyone of our councilors, especially from the third district ever stand up in the Council and call the CENRO to task?

College achiever inspired by Nadine Lustre

SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews) — College life is undeniably one of the most demanding parts of a student’s journey; some even think it is innately stressful because of heightened responsibilities, increased pressure, and the likelihood of failing time management. Even so, all these do not always wrap up one’s grit, ardor, and determination to succeed in life.

This sums up the story of Bryan C. Eguna, a former Supreme Student Government president, a cum laude from Surigao del Norte State University – City Campus, and the 3rd Most Outstanding Student Leader in Caraga Region (Caraga Federation of Tertiary Student Leaders, 2023).

Believing in his dreams

After moonlighting as a student leader, Eguna was on Cloud 9 when he received his medal as cum laude for an elementary education degree on Wednesday, June 7.

The Latin honor was something he had dreamed of reaching ever since he began studying. “I always dreamed of graduating [college] with a Latin honor,” Eguna said.

Behind his success in his studies, Eguna knew that something had fueled him along the way. “I come from did great in my academics and likewise in leadership to prove to anyone else that I am more than me,” he shared. the truth that the road taken was not easy as he played the roles of student and leader, not to mention his shared responsibility at home.

“Over time, I understood that there were many holes son,” he said.

But challenges do not always win over the yearning to make a difference. Armed with faith in God, Eguna chose to continue, saying he had to because God is with him and

“a lot of people motivated” him—family, friends, fellow student leaders, just to mention a few support system.

Moreover, Eguna stressed that “time management” was one key that enabled him to balance everything. “I had this strategy where I listed the things I do every day, both and productive, as I could manage both,” he narrated.

Advocacies

While busy juggling roles at school, Eguna also has a heart for the community and a spirit of volunteerism. As an eco-warrior he volunteered for several clean-up drives and tree-planting activities in the city. He believes that these simple steps can have a huge impact on the place we live— the present and future generations will

Not only that, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Eguna advocates promoting inclusivity across the social spectrum, believing that everyone, regardless of gender, should be given equal rights in the workplace, school, and the like. “I realized that I should be cognizant and be an advocate with regard to this based on my

As a consistent honor student, he also had a fair share discriminated against and judged, which led me to question how I look physically. But I realized that in order to be someone who is empowered and unstoppable, I must accept who I am and not be affected by what people say about me. I’ve always taught myself that the only valida-

tion I ever need is one from myself,” he remarked.

Love for Nadine Lustre

Aside from his family, Eguna shared that there’s a celebrity whom he really loves as well as idolizes, and that is Nadine Lustre. “I have been a fan of her since 2014. What I admire about her the most is her realness and bravery,” he confessed.

More importantly, Lustre’s constant humanitarian acts strengthened his admiration.

“She’s doing charity work—helping our community—and that’s what made me truly love her,” he continued.

He added he is thankful to Nadine for serving as “inspiration” throughout his academic career, particularly with regard to developing greater self-assurance while making a difference in the community by engaging in charitable endeavors at the same time.

Future plans -

his review.

College life may be tiring for many. But to Eguna, it is more than just how it feels to be in college—it was a supplemental, important point in his life that made him even the best version of himself and beyond. ”And though I will not be studying [in college] anymore, I will still continue what has been started, which is to serve the community.” horizons while enriching his capabilities as an individual and more so as a leader.

New Bayanihan — A framework for national unity and identity

Part 1: Seeking a foundational document for national identity

A personal note:

Filipino people have been facing. This is a result of my rehistorical foundational documents that are to be used as the basis of this national narrative.

Seeking these core elements to form the foundation of the New Bayanihan Ideology, shaping a collective mindset and approach that fosters unity, cooperation, and a shared sense of purpose among Filipinos. By embracing these elements, individuals and communities can work together toward a brighter and more inclusive future for the nation.

A foundational document that provides our Historical Perspective: The Kartilya ng Katipunan and Bonifacio's Decalogue

The Kartilya ng Katipunan and Bonifacio's DecalogueSpanish colonial rule. These documents were penned by Emilio Jacinto and Andres Bonifacio, respectively, both of independence.

The Kartilya ng Katipunan, also known as the Katipunan principles of the Katipunan, a revolutionary organization founded by Andres Bonifacio. Emilio Jacinto, often referred to as the "Brains of the Katipunan," authored the Kartilya ng Katipunan, which served as a moral and ethical guide for the members of the organization.

Bonifacio's Decalogue, on the other hand, consists of-

ness, and commitment to the cause of liberation among its members.

The core principles and values emphasized in these documents

The Kartilya ng Katipunan and Bonifacio's Decalogue highlight several core principles and values that are deeply ingrained in Filipino culture and continue to resonate today.

These include:

Courage: The bravery to confront and overcome challenges, even in the face of adversity and danger.

8. Social Justice: The pursuit of a just and equitable society, where the rights and welfare of all citizens are protected and upheld.

The impact these principles can be applied in contemporary society to foster national unity

The principles and values articulated in the Kartilya ng Katipunan and Bonifacio's Decalogue continue to hold and applying these principles, the Filipino people can foster national unity and contribute to the progress and development of the nation.

Encouraging empathy and compassion can help break down barriers and bridge the gaps between different segments of society, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and unity.

Embracing the principles of equality and social justice involves advocating for inclusive policies, promoting equal access to opportunities, and addressing the ensuring that every Filipino has a fair chance to succeed and prosper, national unity can be bolstered.

Integrity and courage are essential in building trust among the Filipino people. Upholding transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct in both public and private spheres fosters an environment of trust and unity. Encouraging individuals to stand up against corruption and injustice promotes a collective commitment to the values that underpin national unity.

It is important to understand that the integration of these principles requires a concerted effort from all sectors of society, including government, civil society, and individuals.
