Reports from DepEd show that 404 students have taken their lives, while 2,146 have engaged in self-harm in the country

In response to this, DepEd sets in motion several mental health programs

such as the HEEADSSS (Home, Education, Eating, Activity, Drugs, and Depression, Sexuality, Suicide, Safety) Assessment as part of the health assessment in schools. They also have mental health and psychosocial support services offered during calamities, like psychologi-

28th IB soldiers sent off for UN support mission training

THE 10TH Infantry Division sent off the troops of the 28th Infantry Battalion (28IB) as they prepared for United Nations (UN) Peace Support Operations (PSO) Mission held at the Sgt. Demerin Grandstand, Camp General Manuel T Yan Sr., Mawab, Davao De Oro, on June 13.

Major Mark Anthony

Tito, the 10th Infantry Division Public Affairs Office chief, said the 28IB would comprise the core unit of the Philippine Army United Nations Light Infantry Battalion (Team) for the UN PSO Mission.

The 28IB soldiers will undergo training in Luzon for almost a year

before their deployment in 2024.

In his message, MGen Jose Eriel Niembra advised the Kamagong troopers to embrace the mission with utmost dedication and professionalism.

"Your actions will speak volumes about the character and results of the Filipino soldiers.

Remember, you are not only representing the 10th Infantry Division but also the Philippine Army and the Philippines as a whole.

Your conduct will shape the perception of future Filipino peacekeepers, and you have the power to inspire generations to come," Niembra added.

During the ceremony,

the 28IB received Command Plaques from the 1001st Infantry Brigade and the 10ID for dismantling Guerilla Front 2 and Sub-Regional Guerilla Unit (SRGU) of Sub-Regional Committee 2 (SRC 2), all under the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC), that help led to an Insurgency-Free Davao De Oro.

For 53 years, the Davao Region had been plagued by insurgent groups that threatened the peace and stability of the public. The New People’s Army (NPA) or the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, had established a position in the region, engaging in acts of terrorism, extortion, and recruitment.

The government’s efforts to fight against insurgency faced numerous challenges, requiring a comprehensive approach that involved various agencies, including the Tactical Operation Group 11, Philippine Air Force.

The Tactical Operations Group 11, Philippine Air Force, stationed in Davao Air Station, Davao City, became a crucial asset in the campaign against insurgency. Comprising highly skilled and dedicated personnel, TOG 11 utilized air assets to

support ground operations and provide vital intelligence. Their primary mission included conducting air strikes, close air support, reconnaissance, and aerial surveillance.

These operations not only weakened the capabilities of the NPA but also instilled fear and apprehension among their ranks. The timely and accurate crucial role in dismantling the infrastructure and support networks of the insurgents.

Apart from their combat operations, TOG 11 adopted a hearts-and-minds approach by actively engaging with local communities and the vulnerable sectors in geographically disadvantaged locations. They conducted various community service activities, including medical missions, school outreach programs, and livelihood support initiatives.

These efforts aimed to address the root causes of insurgency by addressing the socio-economic needs of the people, promoting unity, and gaining their trust and support. By actively participating in community development, TOG 11 effectively bridged the gap between the

military and the civilian population.

The significant contributions made by TOG 11, in collaboration with other security forces and government agencies, have yielded remarkable results. On September 19, 2022, the Regional Peace and Order Council–Davao (RPOC-11) signed a resolution declaring the entire Davao Region cleared of insurgents. This achievement is a testament to the

the safety and well-being of the Davao Region’s populace.

While the declaration of a cleared region

TOG 11 is far from over. The maintenance of peace and order, as well as sustainable development, requires continuous efforts. TOG 11, alongside other government agencies and its stakeholders, will need to remain vigilant, providing security and support to prevent any resurgence in its Area of Responsibility.

And because he was like the mad racers in the movie, he became Firecat. EDITORS’ NOTE:

Alas, that was one of my fondest and unforgettable memories of growing up with our now-departed father. I often like to think, it must be, in more ways than one, he grew up with us too. Before the coming of grandchildren, he was our drill sergeant, serious in instilling discipline in the house. In his own words, this was needed to mold us into mature adults. However, with the coming of grandchildren, greats, and much later, great-greats, he took a full turn and mellowed down. Thus, the tag of the Firecat was no more.

My dad passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of January 22, 2022 at the age of 93. Some of his friends who believed in numerology had said that was a good combination right there. I only take it; they only say that to ease our pain a little. Another peculiar thing I have heard a lot from people lately. Since he died in his early nineties, they reiterate that was already a bonus in itself, as if “bonus life”, as in the context of computer games, was now the prevailing unit of measure for assessing one’s existence in the world. I’d love to live to be a hundred or more if I could.

My father, in all of 93 years, had shared with us so many facets and phases of his life (including that of being a musician and a sportsman). His rich timeline had included a dashing all-in-white young dad standing by the roadside in Ponciano, a sporty grandad in tennis shorts playing with his apos and drab cell-of-a-bed.

Still, I imagine through those eyes, he had witnessed the world change, from the almost black and white of wartime to the neon greens and other vivid imageries of today. He saw it all and as he did with all his most beloved grand, great and great-great children, he embraced it all. Only in a passion I rarely saw in others. No one should ever see longevity as a fat bonus. To love all you are blessed with, that is the only reward. I love you more than you’ll ever know pops.

On the occasion of the Regional Magiting Conference

On behalf of the City Government of Davao, I would like to extend our warmest Madayaw (welcome) to all the delegates, guests, and partners of the Regional Magiting Conference to Davao City!

We are honored to be chosen as one of the hosts for the Magiting Conference that the Ayala Foundation spearheads. Taking this conference to other parts of the country makes us feel included and valued. That Davao and Mindanao are part of the Philippines.

Davao and Mindanao fought hard against colonization. We could even argue that we should not have been part of the territory that Spain sold to the United States for 20 million dollars under the Treaty of Paris because Spain did not fully succeed in colonizing this part of the country. That is why the Philippine government is still working until now to address historical injustices committed against Mindanao.

We have been seeing a lot of posts on social media from Filipinos expressing their frustration with our country, saying: “Pilipinas, ang hirap mong mahalin.” Philippines, you are hard to love.

True, loving is hard. Especially when the one your love does not live up to your expectations. But, perhaps,

MESSAGE

COUNCILOR PILAR C. BRAGA

the problem lies with not loving ourselves enough to be able to give love to others and to our country. As they say, you cannot give what you do not have.

That is why having this Magiting Conference can be good start for us Filipino to love ourselves so we can love our country better.

Love starts with affection – with the appreciation of what is good in a person or, in this case, our country. How we do that is to learn more about our roots, our history, our cultural heritage. The more we understand our past and how we came to be, the more appreciation we have of how far we have gone.

Overcoming colonization is not an easy feat. And we had more than one colonizer. We survived two world wars, insurgencies, secessionist movements, and many terrorist attacks. We are a nation struggling with individual and collective trauma and we need to heal.

Old folks forgetfulness

I COOK very delicious adobo, chicken or pork, says the how to cook. Very often, after most of the ingredients like unsalted butter had been added, I would search for one more spice in the cupboard and go back to the cooking pan forgetting what it was I was looking for. It was oyster sauce.

and broke one front tooth after brushing because I forgot to put them back on. I won't be seen in public until they are repaired in two or three days.

Old folks forgetfulness is funny but also often very embarrassing. It is as common as back or knee pains as well as bad eyesight or hearing among the elderly. However, could it be an early warning sign of dementia or Alzheimer's disease?

I downloaded the following paragraphs from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC's website.

Mahirap mahalin ang Pilipinas because we are exhausted and traumatized. And coming together in conferences like this one would help us in our journey towards healing as a nation. We need to remember that we are Magiting. We are brave heroes. Just showing up here today is a demonstration of our patriotism. We made time for this because we believe our history is important; our Filipino identity is important. We are showing our love for our country by being here and participating in this conference.

I am honored to be included in this event and to be in the company of magigiting na Dabawenyo, Mindanawon, at Pilipino.

It does not always live up to out expectations, our hopes and our dreams. But it is up to us – its citizens – to realize them and make them happen. That is our job – to create the country we love.

Daghang salamat, Padayon at Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

4.Forgetting the most recent events.

I write about old folks forgetfulness because I am worried that my wife who will only be 77 years old next month may be showing early signs of dementia. The above facts from the CDC website clearly indicates that she is not. What a relief.

However, item 3 above says, " Forgetting the name of an acquaintance." This one is a little bit tricky for me.

I often wonder why it is that when my wife calls our granddaughter who has lived all her 17 years with before she can remember her name. She also sometimes forgets the name of our eldest son who had lived almost all his life with us. They are not mere acquaintances.

One time in a small gathering at home, she calledriage. She forgot my name. How can I not get worried? of me in a waiting tricycle loudly said. After a very few embarrassing moments, I zipped my pants and calmly answered, " We, elderly men, have the right to forget to zip our pants sometimes".

ment of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Teen Centers or AdolescentFriendly Health Facilities (AFHF).

DepEd also created the Unified School-Based Referral Flow (from Teen Center to Partners) and the unified referral slip with the incorporation of the HEEADSSS to ease the transition from one institution to the other when it comes to referrals. Aside from this, they created a data bank for suicide cases where a narrative report template on suicide incidents for evaluation of prevention measures.

Although these programs aim to create a conducive learning environment where they can have positive mental health, many schools in the region lack the means to achieve it.

“It’s not only the psy-ance counselors kulang (are lacking too). So yung (the) law na pina-pass ngayon sa (being passed in the) Senate

allows psychometricians to take on the function of guidance counselors because sa tinuod lang no (to tell you the truth), what’s stopping guidance counselors from going to public schools is the salary grade, “ said Gabriel Sebastian Nograles-Lizada, Rpsy., Olive Branch Wellbeing Center and PMHA consultant/partner.

Jeniellito Atillo, spokesperson of the Department of Education XI, said the lack of movement in promotion is the main reason why public schools have inadequate guidance counselors.

The DepEd XI and PMHA will conduct mental health training for Davao de Oro teachers. Both organizations discussed working with the media on responsible reporting for mental health.

“When we talk about mental health, it’s a very personal construct. But it's everybody’s business”, said Lizada.

Gov’t resources available for Mayon evacuees: Marcos Jr.

MANILA – The government will tap all its available resources to help the families displaced by Mayon Volcano’s restiveness, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said Thursday.

Marcos stressed the government must be “sensitive” to the needs of the affected residents in Albay province.

“Whatever is needed, we will have to provide,” he said in a media interview on the sidelines of the International Trade Forum at the Shangri-La The Fort in Taguig City, when asked if the government has enough funds to provide relief assistance to the evacuees.

“Marami namang tumutulong (Many are extending help). All agencies are already engaged in their rehabilitation effort, in the support for the evacuee,” he added.

The government is ready to provide both cash assistance and mental health support, Marcos said.

He acknowledged that

affected individuals, including children, might need mental health and psychological aid.

“Kailangan tignan ninyo ano ba ang problema para maayos natin kung ano ang problema nila (We have to identify the problem and address that). And if it takes cash, then that’s well and good. But sometimes it’s not cash. Matagal naming pinagusapan, ano ang gagawin natin sa mga bata na hindi nakakapagaral, na walang ginagawa (We had a lengthy discussion about the children who were unable to go to school [because of Mayon’s unrest]),” Marcos said.

“These are other issues that are basically not quantiThe issues of mental health of those children, even the parent, kailangan natin pagisipan iyan kasi mahirap ang pinagdaanan nila (we need to think about it because they have to give all the support

that we can,” he added. Marcos said he has instructed concerned agencies to “carefully” study the distribution of monetary aid to the affected individuals.

Marcos visited Albay on Wednesday to assess disaster operations.

Mayon Volcano's increasing activity that has forced nearly 18,000 individuals to stay in evacuation centers in the province’s six towns and two cities.

He visited the Guinobatan Community College evacuation center to assess the condition of the displaced families and also led the distribution of government assistance.

the Mayon Volcano unrest at the Albay Astrodome, Marcos said concerned government agencies must prepare to cover 90 days of relief assistance, or the estimated maximum period of unrest of the volcano, to take load off local government units. (PNA)
