CDO bats for whole-of-society approach on mental health crisis

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The local government said Friday it is pushing for a whole-of-society approach in addressing mental health issues and suicide prevention.

In a statement, Mayor Rolando Uy said part of the plan is to establish "mental health corners" in villages and train teachers in public schools on early detection and response.

“I have instructed the Local School Board and the Liga ng mga Barangay to coordinate with the CSWD (City Social Welfare and Development) in promoting mental health and preventing suicides,” he said.

Dr. Jayme Leonen-Pagaspas, CSWD Psychosocial Division head psycholo -

gist, said the number of suicides in the city is an indicator that depression is an ailment that needs better understanding.

Early detection

Depression is one of the most disabling diseases worldwide, Pagaspas said, adding that it is important to acknowledge that it is "a social plague" that entails the cooperation of all members of society.

Pagaspas said they are working to have personnel those detected with depression

and those exposed to traumatic experiences, like loss of loved ones and calamities.

The CSWD has already launched a mental helpline that is expected to operate 24/7.

The department is training more professionals for the hotline, which can be reached by calling 911 and 0970-0392709.

Leonen also appealed to the media to be mindful and sensitive in reporting suicide and tackling mental health issues.

Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza, the PRO-BAR director, presented the 50 former Moro extremists to Gen. Acorda in the presence of police officials and local leaders.

Acorda lauded the local political leaders for assisting the police in establish-

ing a peaceful environment across BARMM.

“I appreciate your brave decision to embrace peace and work towards a better future for their communities,” Acorda told the surrenderers, adding that the event marks a crucial step towards lasting peace and reconciliation in the region.

Acorda presented the "Pedtabanga Tanu" livelihood assistance program to the former BIFF combatants during the ceremony.

“This program aims to empower and support the surrenderers in their transition to a peaceful and productive civilian life. Through livelihood training, skills development, and

its partners are committed to ensuring that the former combatants have sustainable means of income and livelihood,” Acorda said in a statement on Friday.

An estimated 150 BIFF have so far surrendered to police and military authorities in the BARMM since January this year.

The power of cartoons in asserting press freedom

AN ART exhibit of more than 50 editorial cartoons published in Mindanao Times by artist/illustrator Alex Alagon was featured as part of the celebration of the 30th World Press Freedom Day held at SM City Davao.

The objective of the exhibit was to inspire young illustrators to develop not only their drawing skills but their critical thinking, as well. According to Alex Alagon, who is also a visual

artist by profession, Conceptualizing an editorial cartoon is challenging because one does not only create imagery but critiques current issues that affect our daily life. Cartoonists also

run the risk of libel cases like all forms of media.. Alex however said the risk is part of the territory of expressing press freedom. The exhibit was mounted on May 11-13, 2023.
