Clear dikes

THE River Patrol Monitoring Team tasked with surveillance, monitoring and demolition of illegal structures in the city reported that most of the demolished structures were on top of dikes and under the bridges in the city.

Angel Sumagaysay, head of the Public Safety

these are mostly located in Talomo, SIR Matina, Davao river, Panacan and in Bago Gallera. Most of these structures were already

demolished.

Sumagaysay said that most are made of light materials and a few are made of concrete, which is why it took them sometime to demolish some of them. These structures are usu-

ally extensions of houses, toilets, kitchen and cages of animals. While others build apartments.

He said that as other informal settlers have already settled in these areas for two decades or more,

demolition takes time as they need to find areas to stay. They are usually accommodated by family members living nearby.

The team coordinated with the City Social Welfare and Development Offorms of support to settlers who have to leave their

homes.

“Usahay mangayo sila'g time makapangita og lugar so dili man pud dayon namo gina-diretso og demolish, muingon kami nga one week, after one week dire-diretso na na (Sometimes they ask for time so we cannot directly demolish and we suggest that we

will conduct the demolition after one week and when that time comes the demolition pushes through),” he said.

Sumagaysay said that the demolition of structures on top of dikes and under bridges came as a verbal order by the former Davao

Pareidolia Blues!

WE are certain that Davaoeno Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go is aiming high in the level of his public service. This can easily be gleaned by every consistent observer of the way he comports himself in the performance of his duties as senator. This can also be observed from his choicecance and of importance to the masses with which to react.

And he has chosen to espouse and implement a program that endears him to the millions of disadvantaged Filipinos – the institutionalization of the Malasakit Centers in various parts of the country.

Everybody is well aware of the fact that when one is has to confront is the lack or even absence of money to pay for hospitalization and other related expenses. Senator Go, perhaps learning from his experience when he was man Friday of then Davao City Mayor and former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, replicated the Davao-originated hospitalization aid program at the national level.

Malasakit Centers are already operational. These are facilities where those who are hospitalized and have no one to turn to for help defray medicine and services expenses can approach for assistance. The operation of these centers is funded through the Senator’s initiative.

On the other hand, Go seems to know what issue of nagive his reaction. One example is the controversial proposal pension scheme for the men and women in the uniformed service.

His stand on the issue is to retain the present system, and that if to have the men in uniform contribute to the fund build-up for the pension, it should only apply to new entrants, was widely acceptable to those who stand to be affected.

And for now Senator Go is the most visible among the

But of course we know that it will not be for the immediate. He will surely not attempt to go against sure Presidential candidate in 2025 Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio, the daughter of his mentor. Go would probably not even consider running for Vice President as the VP’s tandem. It would not look good for an all-Davao team-up.

The senator of course is young and he has many more years ahead of him as a public servant. Therefore, he can look forward to the election in 2031.

Meanwhile Go can continue to level up his services And he must be extremely cautious in all dealing he will do destroy the foundation he as painstakingly started building for his political career.

The power of soft words

ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews / 04 May) – I still vividly recall my experience with an ace writer. Fresh out of college, I attempted to write an essay for a local paper. However, the words that came out of the ace writer and the way they were spoken left me with the notion that writing was not for me. I thought it was an unachievable goal better left in the backyard of dreams, maybe to be pursued in another lifetime, but not in my current one.

While I can write a decent essay or two, I have no illusions of being a professional writer. In the hands of an expert wordsmith, my writing could easily end up in the trash. However, I believe that spoken words and actions can be just as sharp as the traditional weapons used by fearless warriors like the Tausug or Sama Bangingi’. A critic's sharp critique can cut through a topic like a barongment can pierce through someone's heart like a kampilan leaving no hope for change. And so, I grew up knowing words can be sharper than these traditional blades.

In the evening of May 1 holiday, I had the opportunitycial politics and religion. The purpose was to brainstorm ideas, but there was no rush for anyone to speak their mind. Rather, their presence, demeanor, eyes, and smiles conveyed everything that needed to be said. Their hearts were talking to each other in a way I am overwhelmed. I

cannot remember the last time I was in a gathering like this one.

Despite their knowledge about the topic, there were few verbal exchanges during our conversation. The speakers avoided attempts to impress or dominate the conversation and instead focused directly on the matter at hand. In the pauses between speaking, they exchanged soft words that conveyed empathy and understanding for each other's perspectives. These moments of spoken words and non-verbal actions epitomized the essence of empathic and dialogic conversation.

I am awestruck as I recall my research mentors, Dr. Ofelia Durante and Dr. Norma Gomez, speaking about the presence of the Holy Spirit during fruitful conversations. This feeling of blessedness is especially poignant as we have just left the holy month of Ramadan, and two or three of the participants in our discussion have already begun their optional fasts for the month of Shawwal. It is as though we are all connected in a spiritual sense, united in our pursuit of knowledge and understanding. The words of my mentors remind me that there is something special

about the way we communicate with one another, and it is not just about the words we say, but the spirit in which we say them.

tually, many of us will need to walk our talk. Some will be on the giving side of zakat (mandatory alms), sadaqat (optional charity), and awqaf (lasting endowment), while others will need to manage these resources sustainably and according to Islamic principles. I am simply in the middle, providing technical advice.

If there is one important lesson to take away from this evening's conversation, it is the power of soft words to inspire, motivate, and move us to action. May the Almighty bless our efforts and allow them to bear fruit for world for years to come.

CHR welcomes the draft DepEd curriculum citing red-tagging and EJKs as rights violations

Commission on Human Rights (CHR) welcomes the recognise ‘red-tagging, trolling, and extrajudicial killings in its draft curriculum for Araling Panlipunan in basic education.

As the country’s independent national human rights institution, CHR has long denounced the act of red-tagging tagging only serves to stigmatise and silence individuals and groups critical of the government or advocating for social justice. More alarmingly, however, is that this practice has resulted in numerous human rights violations, including enforced disappearances, torture, and even arbitrary executions.[1][2]

PNP not giving up on missing sabungeros

MANILA – The Philippine National Police on Sunday night maintained it is committed to searching for the missing sabungeros and jail the suspects behind their disappearance.

"The PNP remains steadfast in their search for the missing sabungeros as suspects in the case have been issued warrants of arrest," PNP public information chief Col. Redrico Maranan said.

The case of the missing sabungeros involves the kidnapping of six victims -- James E. Baccay, Marlon E. Baccay, Rondel F. Cristorum, Mark Joseph L. Velasco, John Claude Venson Inonog and Rowel Gomez that transpired at the Manila Arena in Sta. Ana, Manila on Jan. 13, 2022.

Recently, a 15-page joint resolution was released by the Department of Justice (DOJ) disclosing that state prosecutors found probable cause to indict the

six suspects for six counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention under Article 267 of the Revised Penal Code.

The suspects are Julie Patidongan, Gleer Codilla, Mark Carlo Zabala, Virgilio Bayog, Johnry Consolacion and Roberto Matillano Jr.

However, the complaint against Jonas A. Alingasa and Herolden Alonto was dismissed for

According to the resolution, prosecutors considered the testimonies of witnesses and CCTV footages from different barangays that showed the continuity of the forcible abduction.

The victims' cell phone conversation with their kin during the time they were abducted, the testimony of a witness who identified the suspects, CCTV footage showing a black and a gray van followed by a silver Toyota Wigo that left the Manila Arena, the short lapse of time as shown in

the CCTV footage, and the victims' disappearance since the abduction were all cited as circumstances that may prove the suspects' guilt.

The case of Inonog, Baccay brothers, Cristorum, Velasco, and Gomez is one of the eight cases handled by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Special Investigation Task Group (CIDGSITG) “Sabungero”.

The SITG " Sabungero" encourages everyone with information regarding the case to come forward and help in the investigation.

Meanwhile, PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. reassured the victims' families and the nation that the investigation would continue until the truth is uncovered.

Mylah Faye Aurora

Cariño, the region's National Economic Development Authority (NEDA10) director, said the exceptional achievement can be attributed to "revenge travels" or the return of travelers’ influx to the region.

"The region’s annual tourist arrivals, domestic and foreign, in 2022 increased by 177% to 1.66 million from 599,000 in 2021," Cariño said in a

statement.

Cariño said the continued easing of pandemic-related mobility restrictions also led to the increased demand for travel and tourism-related services in the region.

She described the expansion of Northern Mindanao's economy last year as a sign of the region’s "further recovery from the pandemic and its resilience amid external headwinds."

The Philippine Statistics Authority-10, meanwhile, also recorded Northern Mindanao's services sector with a growth of 10.1 percent in 2022, describing it as a signal of the region’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
