Another pawikan turned over at the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park

IN time for Earth Day, a female hawksbill sea turtle was turned over to the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park at Sitio Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya, Davao City. Found in a Ronel P. Simo in the sea near Purok Libra, Sitio Tambangan, Lasang, Davao City.

This year’s Earth Day theme, “Investing in our future,” highlights the importance of dedicating our time, resources, and energy to solving climate change and other environmental issues for the sake of future generations.

Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. (Davao Light) and its social development arm Aboitiz Foundation Inc. continue to support the conservation efforts for sea turtles at the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park, a pawikan rescue center facility.

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), sea turtles help maintain the health of seagrass beds and

coral reefs. In particular, the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles live on coral reefs. They eat the overgrown sponges that suffocate slow-growing corals, resulting in a healthy reef. They also help prevent the overpopulation

Currently, there are seven (7) rescued pawikans under the care of Aboitiz Cleanergy Park. Out of the seven sea turtle species in the world, three species of pawikan namely an olive ridley, a green sea turtle, and the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles are at the park. In coordination with the Department of

Environment and Natural Resources XI, they are provided with veterinary care and are being observed at the facility until they are fully recovered and can be released back into the wild.

The park is also a known nesting ground for the hawksbill sea turtles and has released over 7,000 hatchlings since 2015.

This effort, along with coastal clean-up and tree planting activities conducted at the park are testament to the Aboitiz Group’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal [14], which aims to conserve life below water.

DAVAO CITY (PIA)- The Department of Health is set to launch a nationwide campaign to vaccinate kids with MeaslesRubella (MR) and Oral Polio Vaccine.

The kick-off for the supplemental immunization activity in Davao Region will be on April 28 at Balimba Hills, Barangay Sto. Niño in Talaingod, Davao del Norte.

According to DOH Undersecretary Abdullah Dumama the vaccination program aims to protect children in high-risk areas from outbreaks of diseases.

“Yung mga high-risk areas, mga GIDA (Geographical Isolated Disadvantaged Areas), unahin natin yan para maprevent ang possible outbreak,” Usec. Abdullah said.

Based on environmental surveillance, they found traces of the polio virus in other parts of the region.

He added in Davao City, they found polio virus in the Davao River under Bolton Bridge.

For cases of measles-rubella the DOH monitored MR cases in Asuncion (Davao del Norte), Baganga (Davao Oriental), Carmen (Davao del Norte), Davao City, Digos City (Davao del Sur), Governor Generoso (Davao Oriental), Hagonoy (Davao

del Sur), Island Garden City of Samal (Davao del Norte), Laak (Davao de Oro), Lupon (Davao Oriental), Maragusan (Davao de Oro), Mati City (Davao Oriental), Nabunturan (Davao de Oro), Padada (Davao del Sur), Panabo City (Davao del Norte), San Isidro (Davao Oriental), San Isidro (Davao del Norte), Sta. Maria (Davao Occidental), Tagum City (Davao del Norte), and Tarragona (Davao Oriental).

For oral polio vaccination, they monitored a low immunization rate of 61% in Davao Occidental.

“Lahat ng municipalities makuha natin ang coverage per municipality kasi doon natin makikita kung anong municipality ang high-risk. So right now, yung coverage, we need to review our data kung saan po area for example in Davao Occidental buo ba sila yung isa and from that municipality, titingnan mo ang mga barangays sinong barangays ang low coverage for OPV o MR,” DOH-11 Regional Director Annabelle Yumang said.

The DOH-11 has set a target for MR and OPV vaccination per province in the region.

Not so many happy returns

WHAT goes up, must come down, spinning wheel’s got to go round... as the old song goes. Yesterday, I was hoping to read an expert’s view on the probable reason why we’re presently having quite a spell of scorching weather lately. This was what greeted me instead: double-speak, sugarcoating, and the usual game of runaround.

For example, I chanced upon one NASA page comparing global warming and climate change. One had to read twice to get what they were driving at.

For starters, it explained that the term weather is not the same as climate. Duh, that much was simple enough as an intro. Then, it continued that global warming ( as similarly espoused by Al Gore long ago) and climate change (as now championed by Greta Thunberg) are not necessarily synonymous or the same.

However, to compound it further, the causes for the two are the same, “... human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth’s atmosphere.” For the everyman, why can’t these just so easily be explained as what goes up must come down? Or down-to-earth even if one’s trying to be pun-ny.

At least in the general sense, we can say we blew it peeps; we’re the culprit. While others among us may still either place the blame on condensation or vapor trails in the wake of jets overhead or industrial smoke from factories and then car exhaust from our highways, in the end, everything still falls squarely on our laps.

As part of the consequential fallout, the incidences all directions emanating from their main vein which is the ocean of our discontent.

Covid-19, though constantly forewarned as not yet really over, is once again reinexclusive: welcome to season two.

Until recently, even as casual chats from friends living abroad have made it clear to us that in their own localities overseas, the virus (IATF) here have reported that until the end of the month, we will be resorting back to Level two because of the increase in cases of COVID-19 nationwide.

The IATF has recommended this for 26 areas of the country from April 15 to 30. As such, it’s basically a return to the old restriction of 50 percent capacity in establishments indoors (for fully vaccinated adults) and 70 percent capacity outdoors. And it might as well spell for mask-wearing in crowded areas again.

Already, our suburbia chat room is abuzz with complaints and some griping. Meanwhile, those who’ve suffered in the past just quietly read on. While they know wishing the same to befall these whiners and moaners isn’t a civilized thing, in the back of some minds, they Will that shut them up?

EDITORS’ NOTE:

IN an interview with the national media aired on television yesterday morning, Department of Justice (DoJ) Secretary Crispin “Boying”

Remulla disclosed that his agency is in the process of securing a search warrant on a helicopter allegedly owned by Congressman Teves that

Dumaguete to Maguindanao then to Davao City and to Mawab, Davao de Oro right after the killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.

The Teves-owned helicopter could have been used in bringing the triggermen to Maguindanao, where they could be able to escape capture, according to the DOJ Secretary. And Remulla could have based his assertion on the fact that most of the suspected killers were former soldiers and reportedly previously assigned in different areas in Mindanao. According to earlier reports, the soldiers were either AWOL or were facing various crimes committed while still in the service.

There is, however, something intriguing and even landed on the grounds of an elementary school in Mawab by no less than the former governor of the province Arturo Uy.

But in a senate investigation conducted last week, the Provincial Police Director told the probe body that helicopter was reportedly “parked” in a hangar of a large banana plantation for needed repairs. The Police Director to Mawab to bring the mechanic to his place of birth so he could meet his immediate relatives and family members.

When it was the turn of the representative of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) XI to give his account of the helicopter journey, his initial statements were clearly contradictory to that of the Police director’s own narrative. But he later changed his statement and Davao de Oro. That is, the Teves helicopter had for long been in the banana plantation hangar undergoing repair, day that the Degamo slay was perpetrated.

The question is, how come the repair of the chopper was done in faraway Davao del Norte when such service is well available in Cebu or even in Dumaguete? And this helicopter service unit is already engaged in repairing and maintaining other corporate or personally-owned aircraft.

Then we could not believe that the aircraft's mechanic

In other words, what came out during that Senate Committee investigation somehow established the notion the suspect out of Dumaguete since it was already here in the Davao area at the time of the attack on the governor.

Somehow, through his agents, the Congressman can suspicion on the Teves’ involvement in the Degamo slaying along with eight others. Unfortunately, the precisely planned supposed helicopter journey was able to make at least two good men suckers. They succumbed to the suspect’s manipulative ways, knowingly or unknowingly.

Sorry if we have to be repetitive with this issue that, for the longest time, we have been harping on in this column.

We are referring to the still undistributed garbage bins delivered to several rural barangays in the third district and perhaps in the other districts of Davao City, too. The garbage bins, purchased before the 2019 election, were delivered to the recipient barangays before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Households in the “lucky” barangays, especially those residing along the road, were highly expectant then that the garbage receptacles would be distributed in strategic locations so the rural folk would ( /ROUGH/7)

Solon calls for nat’l dialogue on divorce

MANILA – Davao del Norte

1st District Rep. Pantaleon

“Bebot” Alvarez on Tuesday called for a national dialogue on the issue of divorce in the Philippines.

Alvarez highlighted the importance of divorce to the well-being of many Filipino families, particularly workers.

He emphasized the need to recognize the rights of the Filipino workforce, including the right to dissolve unhappy, abusive, and toxic marriages.

"Divorce is a reality for many Filipino families, and it is time for us to acknowledge that reality and create a it," he said in a statement. “We must remember that the well-being of Filipino workers extends beyond the workplace. We must ensure that our laws protect their rights in every aspect of their lives, including their personal relationships.”

Alvarez has long been pushing for the enactment of House Bill 4998, or the “Absolute Divorce Act of 2022, which was approved in principle on Feb. 23, 2023.

He said the Philippines

is the only country in the world, aside from the Vatican, where divorce is not practiced.

The veteran lawmaker said allowing divorce in the impact Filipino workers' well-being and productivity.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), almost half of the country's labor force comprises married individuals.

For those trapped in unhappy, abusive, and toxic marriages, the stress and emotional turmoil of their situation can profoundly impact their ability to perform at work, a recent PSA study said.

Experience has shown that workers in unhappy marriages are more likely to experience health problems, such as depression and anxiety, which can result in increased absenteeism and decreased productivity, it said.

Additionally, it added that those in abusive relationships may struggle to maintain a steady work schedule due to physical injuries or emotional trauma.

Alvarez said he believes Filipino workers must be allowed to end their marriages safely and legally to alleviate the emotional and psychological burdens of being trapped in an unhappy or abusive relationship.

He said this, in turn, would allow them to focus on their careers and reach their full potential in the workplace.

"We cannot continue to deny our fellow Filipinos the right to a second chance at happiness, meaning, and Labor Day (on May 1) and honor the contributions of our hardworking citizens, let us also commit to creating a more just and compassionate society that values the wellbeing of all our people,” he said.
