IT MUST have been roughly a week ago, that I noticed two kids, a boy and a girl, milling about and poking under the car, one on each side, while it was parked in front of the house. Under the car, a tiny stray cat meowed alarmingly and almost immediately, I knew their dark intention. I hollered at them to leave the poor animal alone, prompting them to run to the far end of the street.

Fun and games for them, they say. At one time, the same kids, accompanied by three other graders, spoiled my lazy and quiet Sunday afternoon when they sped past the house and noisily chased a stray dog with sticks further down the street. I could only chide as I rushed out the door, “where are your parents? Do they approve of what you’re doing? Then feeling a bit guilty afterwards at having to have their parents involved in any of this, I slowly shrunk back and closed the door behind me.

Fun and games for them. Yes, that might perhaps be a valid reason for some which therefore brands it as a harmless dismissal, such as in “boys will be boys”. But seriously, is it really? I reckon it’s as natural as other human traits. Why, there’s even an Aesop poem, The Boys and the Frogs, about children being mean to animals. This is even further touched on and immortalized into words by Joanna Russ in The Female Man. “As my mother once said: The boys throw stones at the frogs in jest. But the frogs die in earnest.”

Segueing from children to us, now grown up as adults, let us play spot the hidden Mickey. Isn’t having fun and satisfaction at the expense of others a common thing amongst us? Even the most decent and the woke in our midst cannot deny there is a bit of opportunistic

Patient’s visitors beware

A FEW months back we complained to the Philippine Long Distance Co. (PLDT) through the prescribed normal process, about our landline that only gives us a hissing sound instead of the usual dial tone. Worse is that we cannot be called and we cannot also call through our land line.

We were not the only ones who reached out to the telephone company to complain but our daughter also made several calls as well. But when our complaint rethe problem, we decided to write about it in our column. After the item came out it took only two days for the PLDT technician to come to our house in a barangay in Tugbok district. He did the repair in so short a time.

And all the while we suspected that the defect was in the receiver, the technician later found out that what was defective was the modem. Mind you that our PLDT plan at the time we applied for connection was to have a 25 megabytes per second internet speed. And we have it.

With that MBPS the entire 1000-square meter compound that our house is located in, the net was available all over.

pleasure to be gotten at other people’s misfortunes and worst, whenever an adversary fails at something. That’s as normal as feeling elated when the opposing team loses in sports. We’re still throwing stones, only now translated in our civilized world as mean words and yes, jokes too. They be other people’s imperfections or failings, all appear as common and steady fare in everyday conversations, if only one gets to listen.

There’s actually a Visayan word for such, “merese” (roughly trans as good for you) and it speaks volumes. In Tagalog, we utter “buti nga”. Most often, after deducting what has befallen someone is some kind of retribution of sorts or a deserved punishment, the word, karma.

upon a time we were children throwing stones, those very stones remain deep in us. Worst of all, the most bitter ones have it propped squarely on their shoulders as bricks. Woe to the frogs among us.

EDITORS’ NOTE:

We were enjoying this PLDT amenity until our modem was replaced as a consequence of our complaint. We do not know exactly what happened but with the new modem the net can hardly reach the part of our house compound with a distance of less than 300 meters from where the modem is installed.

In fact, the internet signal is even erratic in our computer room right inside the house. Clearly there is some diminution in the internet speed. Unfortunately, PLDT still bills us the same amount as agreed in our contract with the telecommunications company.

We are not demanding that this problem be addressed immediately as we know we are not the only customer of this giant corporation.

into our complaint and where it is convenient for their technical guys to respond to a request for assistance, please do it where it is convenient. We do not wish to be like our siblings in Cebu where all of them transferred subscription to another Telco when PLDT failed to reconnect their lines after these were cut by the wind brought by the deadly typhoon Odette more than a year back.

We are a loyal customer and we expect that with our continued patronage with PLDT for the last many years will be reciprocated accordingly. ******************************

We are not ready to believe this claim but as a matter of courtesy for some relatives of patients who went all the way to our residence in a remote barangay in the third district just to air their protestations, we have to take this up in this column hoping that this would help stop an illegal policy by a second level hospital somewhere north west of Davao City.

The patient’s relatives who came to us did not complain of the strictness of the hospital concerned in demanding the compliance of health protocols that are still in effect inside hospital buildings. They told us that it is okay with them if the one watching the patient cannot be replaced by any other unless that “other” can present the wearing of face mask, and others.

What they were protesting was the alleged asking by the gate/hospital entrance personnel of a certain amount from the visiting relatives or friends of the patient supposedly to give them the opportunity to see their patient..

Since the patient’s relatives, include the wife, were not aware of such a policy, they told us that they told the hospital entrance personnel that they did not have enough money and were ready to leave. However, the patient and his daughter watcher, upon learning that her mother was at the entrance, asked the nurse in-charge if she and her father could be the ones to get out instead. The request was granted.

Whether this claim is true or not we have to be honest that we have not validated it yet. However, we have no reason to believe that the story was “made up” by the even an iota of motive that the patient’s relatives have to complain against anyone in the hospital, much more its

Trauma healing needed for families of Mary Joy tragedy

THERE are photos of charred bodies from the Mary Joy 3 tragedy circulating on social media. We have to be careful about this because of the emotional and psychological effects it can elicit especially from those aggrieved individuals and families.

Let us call on the @Ministry of Health - BARMM and similar government agencies to extend post-trauma psychological therapy to the aggrieved families. They can work with local ulama in Sulu and Zamboanga City to blend this with religious counseling. These agencies can start with Psychological First Aid (PFA).

Emotional distress is not as visible as physical injury,

KISSAH AND DAWAT

but it can be even more painful and debilitating. The sight or knowledge of loved one's charred body is a source of extremely high emotional stress and psychologically unsettling.

Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin started a group intervention for her city team of responders. A more tailored interven-

tion is needed for aggrieved individuals and families.

This kind of trauma takes time to heal. Let us be confasting in the month of Ramadhan, let us include them in our du'a (supplication) at the time of breaking the fast.

In our understanding those who perished are shaheed (martyrs). But those left behind will have to make amends with their lives. And these efforts and without professional help, (will take) even years to heal or unheal.

and may He give strength and fast healing to the aggrieved parties. Ameen.

Women's Month, Lumad Women

TANDAG, Surigao del Sur (MindaNews) -- Last week, I was perturbed when a pregnant Lumad teen, Tuyet, asked me what to do after she was asked accordingly by the military to go to their camp for an interrogation. All I could muster was to coach her to get legal counsel before agreeing to an interview. And she simply said, “Okay."

In hindsight, I was so embarrassed, thinking that my ready-made answer was not at all practical and that leaving everything alone would be appropriate to the many problems she is facing now. Tuyet was so young when Andap Valley. She is the youngest daughter of Mariko, her organization's thrust for self-determination. Since the pandemic, Tuyet has been separated from Mariko due to the latter's trumped-up charges.

Mariko, together with her husband, opted to run and hide in the mountains rather than surrender to the that displaced their Lumad community, Tuyet joined the witnesses at the sanctuary provided by the local church. During this time, her sister, a civilian, was killed in an ambush while her other sister remained in hiding.

Without tight monitoring at the sanctuary, she met a guy through social media who provided her with a muchneeded sense of security and joy. Such an affair ended after she realized she was pregnant already. I can imagine how she was so perplexed about where to go then. She had to leave the sanctuary out of shame for having lied about her 'escapades'. She had to face the wrath of her parents, who by any Lumad standard would have disowned her already. She had to bear the consequences of her pregnancy with bleak help from her kin. And yet, she decided to bear all these things, including the child within her, and face whatever life has brought her. Tuyet is an epitome of the inner strength of the Lumad women that I know. She exuded a power from within that could not be touched by any form of oppression or threat.

Most often, the 'bagani' (warrior) tradition of the Lumad is attributed to the males who took upon themselves the obligation to protect the tribe. Lumad men prided themselves on being hunters who provided subsistence to their respective families and communities. Typically, Lumad women are sidelined into minor community roles such as cooks, housekeepers, assistants to the 'datu', etc. Yet, Lumad women are always respected for their invaluable contribution to the community. Apart from an important task of 'baylan' (priestess), Lumad women provided

policies if there is no such weird scheme that is clearly detrimental against the hospital and its management system.

We can only hope that the complained issue can be management has nothing to do with this apparent money making venture. **************************

This is one twist in the investigation of the Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and eight others’ killings inside the compound of governor’s residence.

In an interview of former Davao de Oro governor Arturo Uy that was posted on Facebook that we saw yesterday, he told his interviewers that he was informed by highly reliable sources that a day after the Degamo massacre, a helicopter bearing the inscription Teves Cares, landed in a school ground in Mawab, Davao de Oro. Being aware of what happened the day before, former Governor Uy openly admitted the Teves-owned helicopter landing in Mawab led him to engage in a lot of speculation. He said that he called the Civil Aviation

the necessary maternal nourishment to their children and, metaphorically, to their community. Every Lumad believes that the natural environment is as nourishing as Lumad mothers.

In the often patriarchal society they are in, Lumad women do not come far behind the men. In fact, they are as capable leaders as their male counterparts. -

en are as capable as the men in the community. Lumad women are not subordinates but rather complementary to the men. In terms of leadership, recently, Lumad women time that the Lumad social movement that I studied had a female leadership. It was so because potential male leaders refused to accept leadership roles after their chair was violently killed by the paramilitary. From then on, Lumad women took turns taking on leadership roles in the negotiations, consultations, and even rallies.

Femia, a former Manobo party list representative, is one example of courage displayed in the august hall of Congress. Bai Bibya-on of Pantaron exhibited the same

The T'boli women witnesses to the massacre of Datu Danyan in Lake Sebu displayed an undeterred will to claim justice. I personally met Bae Lucy of San Luis whose voice cannot be ignored at peace negotiations. Bae Becky of Bunawan, Bae Minda of the Mamanwa tribe, tireless Matet of the Tagakulo, Subanen women leaders, are few of the respectable leaders representing their ethno-linguistic groups at different local, national, and international forums. And there are countless Lumad women still spread nourishing their communities. In them, I exactly recall the biblical women who continued to be faithful to the covenant with YHWH while the men failed.

It is timely that Lumad women's contribution to their community and to our society at large be recognized while we are still celebrating Women's Month. Lumad women showed how women can play an active role in the transformation of society. It is important that in building a community, all voices must be listened to. Their voices are as equally important as their role in child-rearing. I

Authority of the Philippines or CAAP in Davao City to check if there was any helicopter seeking permission to land in a Mawab site. The former provincial executive said the CAAP response was negative. So the former governor further narrated his speculation that the chopper could have transported the suspects in Mawab as most if not all of them are reportedly from Mindanao. Or the Degamo attack to Mawab town to have the same beyond the reach of investigators.

Former governor Uy concluded that the Negros Oriental congressman’s succeeding pronouncements, somehow gave credence to most, if not all of his speculations.

Now the Uy disclosure will surely create a new avenue for a shift in the investigation which could either derail the probe result as of this point in time.

Somehow, this Degamo slay case is one that could be the epitome of a well-planned and executed crime in the annals of police sleuthing in the Philippines.

remember when I interviewed Inda, my key informanttors and fear for their lives. And yet, she never insinuated that she would counter the violence done to them. Lumad believe that violence has no place in the building up of a better and more just society. They are willing to bear the brunt of life's adversity but not turn themselves into wisdom of not becoming one like their oppressors that they safeguard the generation of their community.

If women in general have anything to learn from these great Lumad women, I suppose it is their capacity to always put the interests of the community or tribe before their own. During 'bakwit' days, I can still recall how I was so touched by a Lumad grandmother who, due to the limited provision, refused to take her own food, but instead gave them to other children who were hungry by then. She told me later casually that she was ready to die already but can't bear to see the Lumad kids go hungry.

In the capitalist-dominated world that we have, we need Lumad women who can teach us certain kinds of altruism, reminding us that we belong to one human famothers. We can't simply survive alone. While we continue us also celebrate their worthy contributions. Celebrating women's month behooves us to acknowledge lumad women's extraordinary display of inner strength, courage amidst oppression, nourishing leadership, peculiar altruism for the next generation, and a non-violent appeal for social transformation. Not that Lumad women are better than the rest of the women, but by the prevalence of oppression and repression among their communities, they refused to give in and be cowled by the situation. Lumad women are simply women who aspire for freedom and progress amidst their adversities and, by doing so, inspire us all to do the same. (Original names are withheld for security reasons)

IT’S graduation season at the Gawad Kalinga community in Los Amigos, Tugbok District, Davao City as 26 members of the Samahan ng may iba’t-ibang Kakayahan sa Dabawmaking this March, after completing the training and passing the assessment conducted by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Region XI.

After a 35-day training which started in December 2022, the SAKADAB members skilled up in dressmaking to further add to their sustainable income-generating projects, aside from baking bread and pastries and selling goods.

“I don’t have any experience in sewing but still I took the challenge. This opportunity

opens many doors for us to provide sustainable income for SAKADAB and everyone who participated in this livelihood training. I plan to make my own version of the bag using rags but I will still study further to share with my group,” Marisol Labasano, the President of SAKADAB said in her speech.

The training was launched after a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Cooperative Capacity Building Project was signed by SAKADAB Consumer Cooperative, Davao Light and Power Co. Inc., and Aboitiz Foundation Inc. last October 2022.

SAKADAB members learn to take measurements and patterns during their dressmaking training.

Historically, Davao Light, an AboitizPower subsidiary, and Aboitiz Foundation have been supporting SAKADAB back when Aboitiz employees helped them build their houses in Gawad Kalinga. Since 2012, the cooperative has been a recipient of various volunteer activities and projects to build the capacity of its differently-abled members. The utility company and

its foundation also provided support to SAKADAB's business when they were severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic where the latter received baking materials as well as sewing supplies for their bakeshop and dressmaking businesses, respectively.

“Your success in your respective business ventures will further inspire us to help more cooperatives nationwide. It reminds us to strive harder to improve our enterprise development program,” Maribeth Marasigan, the President and Chief Operating Ofher speech during the graduation ceremony.
