According to the Climate Change Service, the UTCI is a “bioclimatic index for describing the physiological comfort of the human body under specific meteorological

conditions. It takes into account not just the ambient temperature but also other variables like humidity, wind and radiation, all facour physiological reaction to the surrounding environment.”

Manalo said the increasing heat index is attributed to the global warm-

He added that rising local temperature is also population and rapid development of more urbanized areas.

He said the city’s fully urbanized areas are projected to increase from 4,031 hectares in 2015 to 16,398

Aboitiz Group allocates P78-B CAPEX

FOR 2023, the Aboitiz Group is powering its Great Transformation to become the of almost Php 78 billion, together with its partners. This is a 10% increase from

“By embracing a bold vision of sustainable progress, we are not only transforming our business but also making a positive impact on our country. Our investments in renewable energy and innovation are paving the way towards a brighter future, and we are excited to be leading the charge towards a more sustainable tomorrow,” said Aboitiz Group President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sabin M. Aboitiz.

It is worth noting that last year the largest capital investment of the Group was by a non-power strategic business unit. In 2022, Php 42 billion was spent by Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC), the infrastructure arm of Aboitiz. This was used primarily for its airports, water, and telecommunication towers businesses, which are showing impressive growth prospects.

This year, Aboitiz continues its momentum of diversifying its business

mix, particularly in the infrastructure segment.

The Infrastructure unit of the Group will be spending almost Php 32 billion, or 42% of the Group’s CAPEX budget. This will go towards the continuous expansion of AIC’s Economic Estates, telecommunication towers business, as well as new investments in digital infrastructure.

Additionally, the capital will also be utilized for the completion and main-

FOR an investment instrument as volatile as stocks, is it still possible to predict how stock prices will move at a given time?

Veteran market pundits say this is very much in play, stressing that there is science behind the controlled chaos that is the stock market.

During the TradeTalks Tutorial Series hosted by BDO Securities on the basics of technical analysis and understanding market trends titled "Trending Patterns", BDO Securities Chief Operatsaid market prices form patterns that create trends, and people almost always tend to react the same way when they see the patterns that had similarly formed in the past.

But a more viable game plan, however, is to identify the type of trends that are formed, and riding on them until such trend is reversed.

35 vibrant years and beyond for P&A Grant Thornton

MARKING milestones is easy; making each one count is a feat. And for P&A Grant Thornton, a leading business advisor for scores of dynamic organizations across the country, celebrating its anniversary means so much more than showing appreciation to its clients, its people, and other stakeholders for their unwavering support. It means laying the groundwork to achieve more in the vibrant years ahead.

Last February 15, 2023, P&A Grant Thornton celebrated its 35th Anniversary with clients and other stakeholders whose loyalty and trust have always fueled the Firm’s insatiable drive to achieve and be more.

“2023 marks the 35th Anniversary of Punongbayan & Araullo, now known in the business as P&A Grant Thornton. Turning 35 is an important moment has been marked with huge many businesses, several challenges too,” Ms. Marivic Españo, the Firm’s in her opening speech. “We are fortunate to reach this point of our history largely because of clients and friends in the business community and profession who have all bestowed their continuing support for our Firm and our people.”

It was a night of warm

cheer and good tidings, a meaningful homage to the decades-old institution that slowly but surely rose to prominence as a powerhouse where transformational leaders are mentored and trained. It is, after all, the concrete proof of every employee’s hard work and the organization’s relentless pursuit of all things noble and helpful for its clients. “As a leader, my primary responsibility was to transform the organization that was handed to me by our past leaders to become a stronger and more beautiful one,” said Ms. Españo. Indeed, P&A Grant Thornton is a valued member of the profession today.

The Firm’s promise of excellence, integrity, and quality service

P&A Grant Thornton was born in 1988, a product of the dream of two visionaries and prominent names in the Philippine accounting profession. Early

on, it relied on three core principles that its Founders, Mr. Ben Punongbayan and Mr. Joe Araullo, passed to all staff for them to embody – excellence, integrity, and commitment to provide quality service to its clients.

“We consistently received, annually, very good ratings from clients in our customer satisfaction survey. This great recognition gives us the greatest feeling of all – that we are well-liked by our clients. We are happy and proud to continue to work together with [our clients] in the next 35 years and beyond,” Ben Punongbayan shared during the event.

“From the start, Ben and I planted some characteristics of the Firm that carried us, and which are present even until today. These values were passed on from one generation of leaders to the next and carried over from one Partner to another – traits that distinguish P&A Grant Thorn-

ton leaders and staff and which make the Firm stand out today,” Joe Araullo quipped during his short, but engaging speech at the Anniversary Celebration.

Indeed, these qualities allow the Firm to shine and power through amidst adversity. From its humble

that could” with only seven people and two Partners, it has grown to become a formidable presence in the realm of business advisory and as a leader in the ASEAN region which implements global standards and practices.

The P&A Grant Thornton promise The program, held in the regal ballroom of the Fairmont Hotel in Makati, was a success. Aside from celebrating the Firm’s achievements, the Partners also expressed their com( /35VIBRANY/10)

(Development worker, business woman, farmer and friend, Susan Palad, wrote a review of the book “The Davao We Know” edited and compiled by Lolita R. Lacuesta, in Davao City’s nostalgic past. We are taking the liberty of printing her musings.)

A LONG time ago, I used to borrow my nephew’s BMX the subdivision in back of our

One time, while cruising down its main road, two large from the bushes near an open gate and rushed at me, nipping at my heels and causing me to crash in the opposite sidewalk. Upon seeing me tumble, the two mongrels stopped dead in their tracks and, as though admiring their handiwork and thinking ‘mission accomplished’, silently trotted back to their post by the gate. (I could’ve sworn there were even triumphant smirks on those faces.)

At this, I am once again reminded of theater; calm, process we witness every year on post holidays like event, as things return back to normal. The frantic rush leading up to the zero hour of Christmas day or any malls and churches, vacays and public entertainment everywhere.

Unceremoniously, all the above become mere memories the day after. The madding crowd goes back turns to poof-the-magic-dragon. Just like that, it’s gone like a bubble. It’s like the circus has come to town, then packed up and left. As with other events at life, there’s always that slowly-rising anticipation that, along with its mixed brew of emotions, eventually reaches a peak in the end. From there, like spent energy gradually fading away, there’s that pause: much like those sated dogs back at their posts.

EDITORIAL

The searing summer heat can be merciless and I dare not venture outside the house from 9 am to 3pm.

I take it as an opportunity to write some articles -Tales from the Boondocks and catch up with my readings.Thank you Sharon Gay Caneda for lending me this compilation written by prominent Davaoenos.

It seemed improbable that the rich Marfori children used to bathe at Bankerohan river or that the politically entrenched Garcia boys tried to earn extra pennies during the war as shoe shine boys.

Barrio Obrero was known as San Roque where the Carriedos,Inigos and Tionkos owned vast landholdings stretching to Agdao and planted mostly with coconuts.

And then who would ever think that the Bankerohan Bridge of a bygone era was a favorite for "genteel late afternoon walks and pensive river gazing" which many would look forward to after classes at the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Davao.

I was fascinated by the story of a Bagobo woman who was always seen sitting at the stairs of the Lizada house or the Bagoba who was rescued when she was She became a devoted nanny to the Carriedo and Inigo children.

It was sadly fascinating to read about the great remember staying at my uncle's house behind the Brokenshire Memorial Hospital .Most of the patients as well as neighbors found refuge across Bankerohan. My cousins and I were evacuated to the bottling plant the evening we gorged on the chocolates taken from the freezer of Jaltan. The owner told everyone to take the direction of Brokenshire.

I read with painful sadness, stories of families massacred during the war, the tortures and salvaging of liberation heroes. But I was also inspired by the 12,000 men who built Farm 7 so the American can send the much needed supplies to win the war against the Japanese.

The heat outside might be unbearable but a good book can always transport you to an exalted corner of your mind.

EDITORS’ NOTE:

Then sighs once more. Millions more around the world utter the same bottled-cry, back to the grind. Yet this awakening of stress is also felt everywhere, rising up at the same time with the alarm clock and unique with each individual. This replication, played a thousand-fold and acted on by diverse characters who all expect equallystage in life’s theater. As such, the lights are on and the curtains up, so to speak.

Meanwhile, at the end of the day, the anticipated calm as each of us trudge home from the day’s work comes but correspondingly varies with each actor. The sated ones might get their deserved rest alright, while the bitter who morning to meet the day.

Last night on the way home, the entrance to the subdivision seemed oddly different. Then I noticed the absence anniversary’s celebrations are likewise slowly coming to have packed up and be on his way south too.

Lanao Mayor champions women empowerment, local livelihood

LEADING the Muslim Mindanao towards a brighter and more progressive future, Sittie Aisah “Nancy” Tomawis-Adiong is focusing on women’s empowerment and livelihood to unlock the potential of the people of Tangcal, Lanao del Norte.

As 2023 began to unfold, she promised the people a local government unit that is “participatory, consensus-oriented, accountable, transparent, responsive, effective, efficient, equitable, and inclusive.”

“My priority is to continue the reforms that were started by the past administration, and we will exert more efforts to achieve and sustain growth and development in Tangcal,” she said.

As one of the active women in Muslim Mindanao, Mayor Nancy champions a broad range of social causes, with a particular focus on protecting and upholding the rights of women and children, promoting gender equality, and empowering women economically.

“I always lead sustainable and inclusive actions towards gender equality and women’s empowerment because I, myself a woman, recognize that women thrive and innovate,” she said.

“I can see that more women are overcoming inequities and creating op-

Under her leadership, the Local Government Unit of Tangcal collaborates with Civil Society Organizations, private organizations, youth groups, and Non-Governmental Organizations to create a safer environment for the most vulnerable sectors affected by the pandemic outbreak.

Only a few months after being elected, she has already tapped and affiliated organizations that support her advocacies. These organizations aim to strengthen women and child protection response strategies during the pandemic.

They have also assisted in legal matters, medical needs, and providing shelter/transition homes amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Lastly, she had set her eyes on improving infrastructure as the city bounces back on its feet.

“In 2012 and the years thereafter, we began introducing reforms. We focused on implementing the muchneeded basic infrastructure as it is vital to growth and development. Everything is tied to infrastructure. Without it, Tangcal could not move forward,” she said.

Located in the heart of Lanang is the Damosa Complex which houses several of Damosa Land’s commercial properties that bring in locators from various industries. One worth noting is the Damosa IT Park – Southern MindanIT facility. It is a twohectare district with three information technology buildings, a data center, and a commercial and utility area. Supporting the need for more employment opportunities, the Damosa IT Park is home to top ITenabled service providers and corporate spaces such as Concentrix, SGV, and Regus.

The coconut meat content is much thinner though compared to our Cocos nucifera variety. This indemand coconut variety is originally from Thailand and is well known for its exceptionally fragrant juice.

After a quick reinvigoration from the Aromatic coconut juice packed with vitamins and minerals, Jeline immediately toured us around the facilities of the island resort. She showed us the moderninspired rustic structures of the island consisting of the Family Villa usually used by the Ayala family, the Executive Suite nestled on the beachfront, the tranquil Is-

land Suites used by special guests like papa Piolo P., and the Balinese-inspired Beach Huts which Jeline said are favored by foreign guests. Each structure has its own modern toilet and bath for the guests’ convenience. Except for the Beach Huts, the villa and suites are provided with cool air conditioning units and electric fans. Another structure for the guests to enjoy is the gazebo where they can gather to watch the dramatic sunset or sunrise on the island.

The Island Buenavista lunch buffet we enjoyed consisted of talong, okra, and green mango salad; chicken tinola with sili leaves; Iberian chicken; inihaw na pusit; grilled tuna belly; and various fresh fruits for dessert.

Refreshing cucumber juice was served for our much needed hydration although you can order soft drinks.

Before we knew it, it was time to leave the Island Buenavista with a heavy heart. How we had wanted to stay overnight for that holistic experience of the beautiful paradise resort.

Globe’s EBITDA inched up by six percent to an alltime high of P79.1 billion last year from P74.9 billion in 2021, with an EBITDA margin of 50 percent from 49 percent in 2021.

The company also booked a four percent rise in service revenues to a record high of P158 billion in 2022 from P152.3 billion in 2021, driven by mobile and corporate data services and increased revenue contribution of non-telco subsidiaries. Globe’s revenues in the fourth quarter surpassed the P40 billion level for the history.

On the bottomline, the company reported a 46 percent jump in net income, to end the year at P34.6 billion from P23.7 billion in 2021. This increase was brought about by the gains the company recognized for the partial sale of its data center business, as well as the execution of the first few tranches of the sale and leaseback of its tower assets.

Globe is expecting more proceeds from the tower sale and leaseback initiative this year, with the balance of the towers to be turned over progressively over the next few quarters. Last August, Globe decided to sell more than

LifeStyle

When I was still living abroad, I’d always dream of going to a beach resort in the Philippines. Yes, with its powdery white sand and a majestic view of a vast span of the ocean’s crystal blue seawater, beaches have that soothing and relaxing ambience that nothing can beat even if only in my dream. Not to fail to mention the natural beauty of the island on its periphery. There’s no better place to go to to let go of stress than on the beach.

So fortunate I was to have been invited to the JVA Management Corporation of Miguel “Mike” Misa Ayala’s private island resort, The Island Buenavista, last March 11, 2023, in the midst of the hectic Araw ng Davao festivities.

Island Buenavista, an exclusive resort

The Island Buenavista is one tropical getaway right here in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte. It is about a 45-minute ferry boat ride from the pier of the Waterfront Insular Hotel. Which would make one wonder why Davaoenos would want still to go to other places when Davao has its own island paradise in the Davao Gulf right at their doorstep. Yes, Island Buenavista is an idyllic four hectare paradise island surrounded by glistening blue seawater of the Davao Gulf teaming with the bounty of the sea plus exotic coral reefs. It was an awesome sight landing on the shoreline itself of the Island Buenavista which is free of any man-made ( /CULTURAL/11)
