‘Til Death Do Us Part

For me, there is really nothing better in life than love. Love, love, love (channeling John, Paul, George and Ringo). That’s why there are hundreds of thousands of songs about l-o-v-e. So I decided to dedicate our summer issues to weddings. It is the one day in your life where you pledge your undying love and devotion to another person. It doesn’t matter whether you are straight or gay, love will always be love. I fully support marriage equality. Everyone should have the right to publicly and legally wed that person who makes their heart sing. Because at the end of the day, all any of us really wants in life is to spend this one life, that we are so fortunate to have, with someone who thinks that we are the best thing since apple pie. I know that I do. If you are newly-engaged or in the middle of planning your wedding, we hope that you enjoy discovering new finds to help to make your day special. Feel free to email us wedding pictures, engagement pictures or let us know if you discovered something amazing in the issue. As always, if you know an amazing designer or would like to send me a note, just email me at: editor@faconmagazine.com or hit me up on Twitter, @stylish_in_dc. You can also follow the magazine on Twitter, @faconmagazine. Enjoy. Shoes courtesy of Simplysoles.com

Dayanne Danier This amazing designer creates women's wear that pays homage to classic style with a sassy twist that is drenched in her French Creole roots

SEVEN QUESTIONS FOR DAYANNE DANIER (DAYANNEDANIER.COM)

1 2

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER?

I always wanted to be a designer with my own brand ever since I was a little girl. I loved drawing and image was always a topic of conversation in my family growing up. Whenever we would leave the house my dad would say "kids make sure you are Bien Abye (Well Dressed in French Creole), you don't want people talking about you." So it was kind of inevitable. Although, back then my dad would have preferred an engineer.

WHICH FIVE ITEMS SHOULD EVERY WOMAN OWN TO ENHANCE HER PERSONAL STYLE?

I would have to say the following: 1. The perfect blazer/jacket: it is the one style that when it is paired with anything it can make you look very well put together. 2. A silk printed blouse: it's the style that adds edge to a suit, can give a little trendy feel to a leather skirt, and matches well with the perfect pair of denim pants. 3. A pair of dark wash denim/jeans: We can always use a little something casual in our wardrobe. Dark wash jeans can be paired with any top and still look polished whenever you are stepping out. 4. Statement necklace: Everyone needs a statement necklace. It is the accessory that can help refresh an old style in one's wardrobe. Just make sure it does not overpower. 5. Unique handbag: it can be the perfect conversation starter when you are out in public. It can speak for itself.

WHAT’S BEEN THE HARDEST LESSON THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED?

I would have to say, things don't happen overnight and patience is truly a virtue. The concept of the emerging designer is not a designer who just came out, most have actually been around for a few years, working hard at it. This industry is tough and one has to build a thick skin with patience to get anywhere.

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON AND WHY?

I have so many! I would have to say Diana Ross because I always loved her image and that hair! Angelina Jolie because I have always admired her for all her humanitarian efforts that she started at such a young age. Beyonce because of the way she has embraced all her real woman curves and always looks fabulous. Princess Catherine because I love her grace and poise at a young age, she always looks appropriate. She was a princess before she became a princess. Salma Kayek because she is an amazing actress and a beautiful women. She is another woman I respect for the way she embraces her curves.

5

WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO DRESS IF THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTED ITSELF?

Oh, of course, Michelle Obama. She is one of my muses. I admire her for always putting family first and being active in the community. Tailored silhouettes with feminine twist would look fabulous on her.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

My personal style, I would say, is tailored and chic. I love looking put together and in vogue but not too trendy. I guess that helps when I am designing. I look to create pieces that I wouldn't mind in my personal wardrobe that can be worn anywhere.

7 10

3 4

WHAT CAN'T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?

6

Hmmm, I would have to say my faith. I would not be where I am if I didn't have faith. It has helped me through tough times and it will keep me strong for future obstacles. Without my faith, I have nothing.

STYLE SPOTLIGHT SEVEN QUESTIONS FOR MEN'S STYLIST, CAROLOU GOODRIDGE

1

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO FOCUS ON MENSWEAR AS OPPOSED TO WOMEN'S WEAR?

After working exclusively with women for a number of years, I started to notice a decline in the overall appearance of men. Their style became much more relaxed and they weren't taking as much time or interest in dressing appropriately for work, outings, or formal events. Men didn't have much interest in shopping, and it was more of a chore than pleasurable, as it is for most women. They face the same issues women face — understanding their personal style, what colors work best for their skin tone, and which silhouettes best fit their size and physique. I've had a lot of inspiration from growing up watching my dad get dressed. He was always the epitome of a gentleman. Not only because he was a sharp dresser, impeccably groomed, and wore the best scents; but also because of his confidence.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE BLACK ROOM AT LOST BOYS?

I'm currently the Director of Operations at Lost Boys and the first of it's kind, members-only private style studio called The Black Room. I also work as an independent stylist with private clients. I currently work with up-and-coming singer Aaron "Ab" Abernathy, and most recently DC group, Sound of the City, to help to develop their overall image and introduction to the mainstream industry.

2

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE A GROOM TO HELP HIM STAND OUT A LITTLE ON HIS WEDDING DAY?

One way that a groom can stand out on his wedding day is to incorporate things that are important/special to him. Whether it's your grandfather's old pocket watch, dad's favorite handkerchief, or something given to you by your bride-to-be, wear it. Don't feel obligated to wear a traditional black tuxedo. Play with colors like navy. You may even wear a suit that you really love, instead of a tuxedo. Also, get creative with your shoes too. I've had a client who got married in Christian Louboutin's Rollerboy Spike shoes. Have a little fun and show off your personality. It is YOUR day too!

4 5 6

3

WHICH FIVE ITEMS DO YOU FEEL EVERY WELLDRESSED MAN SHOULD HAVE IN HIS CLOSET?

1. Quintessential jacket. It should be your go-to stand-out piece for any occasion. 2. Well-fitting 5-pocket pants. They go from day to evening, to travel effortlessly. 3. A well constructed black or cognac colored boot. These will pair with suits, jeans, or your 5-pockets with ease. 4. Killer sunglasses. It definitely adds an element of mystery and coolness, without trying too hard. 5. A masculine cologne. Keep in mind your personality, lifestyle, and the feeling you want to evoke. Choose a scent because it smells like YOU.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE MENSWEAR DESIGNERS?

Tom Ford. His clean tailoring and use of rich materials is impeccable. John Varvatos does masculine, tailored-edge and leather like none other.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

Classic, timeless chic. Think Ralph Lauren- my personal favorite designer.

WHAT CAN'T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?

A hot red lip, courtesy of NARS lipstick in Red Lizard.

A CONVERSATION WITH...

Red Sprinkle REBECCA & MADIANA MARGAO WANT TO GIVE BACK TO YOUNG GIRLS IN THE COMMUNITY USING THE ONE THING THAT THEY BOTH KNOW WELL — FASHION by Keri Henderson Rebecca and Madiana are the owners of Red Sprinkle (redsprinkle.com), a brand consulting company. While they love helping companies better position themselves in the marketplace, it’s their most recent passion that gives them the most joy. While attending the Mary Center in Washington, DC as a guest speaker, Madiana met two girls who asked her to be their mentor. It was in that moment that Madiana knew she had to use her fashion background to help young girls explore their passion just as she had growing up. “If I have the ability and resources to be able to teach them something and show them how to do it then why not?” says Madiana.

I’m like, let’s do it! But if we’re going to do it, let’s do it big. From that first encounter, the idea to create the Red Sprinkle Fashion Camp for young teens was born. Madiana consulted with her sister Rebecca and the ladies hit the ground running. “Her strengths tend to be my weaknesses. I’m great at coming up with ideas and she’s always the one that reinforces it,” says Madiana. The two sisters were determined to create the experience of a lifetime for girls in the DC area. “Initially when she had the idea, I was like okay! I’m like, let’s do it! But if we’re going to do it, let’s do it big,” Rebecca added. 42

Façon | Summer 2012

The ladies are definitely setting the bar high with the Red Sprinkle Fashion Camp. The free camp will last for six weeks beginning June 27th at the Mary Center in Washington, DC and will cater to young girls 13-17 years old. When people think about careers in fashion, they usually think of modeling or styling, but Rebecca and Madiana want to offer girls much more. “Every week, we’re going to focus on a different facet of the fashion industry. This is not just clothing and styling. It relates to head to toe presentation,” states Madiana. “We’re going to start off with fashion blogging because we want the girls to have a sense of personal style and understanding how important it is to present yourself in a certain way.” The camp will also feature lessons from celebrity hair stylists and wardrobe stylists, lessons in nail artistry, photography, fashion design and modeling instructions from Ms. District of Columbia. For these ladies, the focus is on knowing the basics. They want them

to know that someone has an interest in them. The lessons that these girls will take away with them sound absolutely amazing, but it doesn’t end there. Rebecca and Madiana are taking their community service one step further. At the end of the camp, the best students will receive scholarships. A true demonstration of their commitment to giving back and helping others pursue their dreams in fashion.

“This is not just clothing and styling.”

If you are interested in making a donation to support the Red Sprinkle Fashion Camp scholarships, please contact Rebecca and Madiana at redsprinkle. com.

PLUMES AND PEARLS CLUTCHES ARE FUN AND FLIRTY STATEMENT PIECES

Clutch ABOUT PLUMES AND PEARLS

This!

Plumes and Pearls came about when both of Andree West’s children were getting married within 4 months of each other. She struggled to find the perfect clutch to complement her outfits. After giving up on department stores, her daughter suggested that she should make her clutch. After doing some research, Andree decided that she had nothing to lose and created her clutch embellished with feathers to personalized it. The rest is history. Her mission is to provide affordable high quality clutches that are personalized using brooches and feather embellishments. All fabrics and supplies are purchased from U.S. vendors. ABOUT COUTURE DREAMS What makes Couture Dreams products so unique is that each piece is handmade from hand screening oversized images or by hand placing hundreds of petals onto our fabrics. No two pieces are exactly the same, making each product a true piece of art. Couture Dreams is co-owned by sister-in-laws, Jeanette DiCarlo & Jodi Marcario. Jeanette has an architectural and fine arts background from Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been published in a variety of trade magazines and noted for state of the art design. Jodi trained as a Speech-Language Pathologist, diverted into the designing field 7 years ago. Together the duo saw a void in the textile/décor and bridal industries for cool and different products. They decided to take their creative abilities and put them to work. To learn more about the Couture Dreams, visit their web site at: couturedreams.com

The Last Word

I am obsessed with cloud formations. I will stop anywhere and everywhere to take pictures of these beautiful, wonderful works of nature. Cloud formations are just a constant reminder for me that nothing stays the same. Embrace change.
