EDITOR’S LETTER

Punk|Grunge|Streetwear Those were the days. I was very happy to see the revival of the punk, grunge and streetwear style in fashion this year. Even though my style is very dressy (even when I’m casually dressed), this style of dress brings back happy memories for me. I was a total punk rocker. Yes, don’t be shocked. I was. I actually went to the 9:30 Club in DC when it was at 930 F Street, NW. I loved the freedom that punk represented. It was very similar to that of 80’s rap. Lots of rebellion and folks who were very angry at the status quo. There was also a good girl gone bad vibe that happened thanks to Madonna. So I loved the raw, authentic punksters and I also loved how Madonna gave punk a super girly spin. That’s the gist of our “Pretty in Punk” shoot. Styling clothes from Instant Vintage 78 mixed with distressed jeans & jackets from Bourgeois and Rebellious was so much fun. I added a few thrift store

finds to keep it all honest. Spice and Raven from Models Inc. played their parts for sure. We got so many comments on how our preview pictures on Facebook, that I knew that we had kept it all real. The Fashion Hauties always add something special to our issues. These are a group of young, high school girls who love fashion and photography. I always so impressed by their vision and their ability to capture a moment in time. Such mature work from young women who haven’t been in the world long enough to even have the perspective that they have. There is plenty of options to pull together a fab punk, grunge or streetwear look, guys and dolls. One of my fav things this issue is Joomi Lim. I absolutely heart everything that she makes. Also fell madly in love with Bespoken. This is the brand that men need to get to know intimately, if they don’t already. This brand needs to be in my guy’s bookmarks if he knows what’s good for him! Lots of other amazing menswear options to boost your swag.

Darker the Lip, Sweeter the Kiss This fall is all about a dark lip - deep plums and dark cranberry reds. The darker you can get it, the better. Every fall/winter, I wear dark lips for a glammed up look without having a full face of makeup. This season all you will need is mascara, liner, blush, and your Bordeaux lip! Must haves:

“Merlot” NYX, $6

“Alabama” NYX, $6

“Cyber Lipstick” MAC, $15

Makeup Extraordinaire Marcus Miller Knows No Boundaries When It Comes to Makeup

By Dominica Tillary

Baltimore based makeup artist extraordinaire Marcus Miller always knew he had a love for artistry but didn’t jump into his career until 2005. As a licensed makeup artist, as well as, an experienced stylist to various household name celebrities, Marcus Miller's illustrious career began as a counter technician for MAC Cosmetics. He used his 5 years at MAC to perfecting his craft, learning proper techniques and the proper tools (brushes), as well as, building his clientele. Marcus decided it was time to take his career to the next level and walked away from MAC to become a professional freelancer. Freelancing opened a new door for him, allowing him to work with for various companies such as BET, SAKS Fifth Avenue and Milky Way Hair. Being able to transform nothing into something is the biggest fascination for Marcus. There is not any one thing in particular he seeks for inspiration. Miller feels that anything can be inspiring. It all depends on what is happening at the time. One of his favorite makeup artists is Pat McGrath because she he believes that her work is so amazing and like him, she thinks outside the box. I enjoy the fact that he has not boxed himself in as an artist. Marcus is very well known for his ability to take makeup from a simple look straight through to the most avant-garde look. He loves to challenge himself as an artist, which in my personal opinion is the only way to evolve as an artist of any kind. In addition to work, Marcus makes time for networking. It's been important in helping him to continue to build his clientele. He reaches out and keeps himself known via the various social networks. Marcus Miller is creating a career that exemplifies a creative individual who understands his direction. Humbled by his faith and motivated by his talents, Marcus Miller truly is a maverick in our craft.

BEAUTY ADVICE

DIY Beauty Easy Do-it-Yourself Tips for Beautiful Skin and Hair Skincare is not as hard or as complicated as most think . Beautiful skin starts by taking great care of your interior and then focusing on the exterior. Have you ever thought about using fruits, vegetables, even condiments directly on your skin? Here are some really fun and creative home remedies for your skincare and hair.

Body I love products that include milk . Milk soothes and softens the skin almost instantly. I was introduced to the milk bath by a co-worker. Once a month, she goes to the market, purchases enough gallons of milk to fill her tub, heads home and soaks! She has the smoothest skin that I have ever felt in my life. Please take into consideration that this can get ver y pric y (hint : this is why she does this once a month). WHAT YOU WILL NEED: MILK , BATHTUB, YOUR SELF, & WINE WHAT TO D O: 1. Buy enough milk to fill bathtub. Tr y to get whole milk because it is a little thicker than other milks. 2. Heat milk on stove. Tr y to use more than one large pot, occupy all of your large pots and all of your burners. 3. Pour milk into tub, sip wine and relax!

Lips I think lip care is the most overlooked regiment but is a much needed one. With the weather changing , dr y peeling lips are common. We have to make sure they are smooth and hydrated. You can mix honey and brown sugar right in the palm of your hand to get the perfect pout. WHAT YOU WILL NEED: HONEY, BROWN SUGAR AND WATER (OPTIONAL) WHAT TO D O: 1.

Place a drop, smaller than a dime, of honey in the palm of your hand

2.

Take pinch of brown sugar and add to honey.

3.

Using your finger mix brown sugar and honey together, if it seems too sticky add a drop of water.

4.

With you finger, rub scrub in a circular motion over lips. I like to let it sit on my lips for a minute.

5.

Rinse. If my lips are peeling I like to use a washcloth while I rinse, just to get the dead skin.

6.

Follow with your favorite lip conditioner or balm.

Faรงon | Fall 2013

Skin If you have great skin, great makeup will follow. The most important thing to look for when getting skincare, in my personal opinion, is brightening . Brightening does not mean lightening your skin color. It's simply making dull skin look radiant and healthy. The Coffee & Cocoa mask is used to brighten skin and is good for all skin types! WHAT YOU WILL NEED: GROUND ESPRESSO OR COFFEE BEANS (4 TBSP), UNSWEETENED CO COA POWDER (4 TBSP), YOUR CHOICE OF DAIRY PRODUCT, SUCH AS: WHOLE MILK , HEAVY CREAM, UNFL AVORED YO GURT, ALMOND MILK OR CO CONU T MILK (8 TBSP) AND HONEY (FOR DRY SKIN) OR LEMON JUICE (FOR OILY SKIN) (2TBSP). WHAT TO D O: 1. Mix coffee and cocoa powder together in a bowl. Make sure coffee is finely grounded to prevent scratching your face. Caffiene is a brightening agent so if you chose to use freshly brewed coffee beans remember it will contain less caffeine (kind of defeating the purpose of the mask). 2. Add your dair y product and stir until you have smooth paste. For thicker paste add less dair y. 3. Stir in honey. 4. Apply mask to a clean face. Always wash your face before doing a face mask or scrub. 5. Once the mask is nice and dr y, press a wet washcloth to your face until mask softens. 6. Rinse mask using warm water. 7. *I like to apply my mask right before I shower. 10-15 minute is normally pretty standard time for a mask (and my shower). Masks are easier to rinse off in the shower.

Hair Whenever we transition from season to season, particularly from hot to cold, our skin becomes a little dr y especially our scalps. There are so many shampoos which are supposed to stop itching . But sometimes you just need something a little stronger. Tr y this lemon juice and olive oil treatment to conquer itchy dr y scalp. WHAT YOU WILL NEED: LEMON JUICE (2 TBSP), OLIVE OIL (2 TBSP) AND WATER (2 TBSP) WHAT TO D O: 1.

Mix Lemon juice, olive oil and water together.

2.

Wet your hair.

3.

Massage mixture to your hair, focusing on the scalp.

4.

Let sit for 20 minutes, rinse and shampoo.

ART & LIFESTYLE

It's Soho, Baby! SICIS GALLERY HAS THAT RARE PIECE YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR Soho (which means SOuth of HOusten) was founded by the underworld of artists who didn't fit into the bustling streets of Wall Street or the fancy streets of Manhattan. The creation of the name Soho actually started the naming convention in NYC. There was a need to rename neighborhoods that are emerging and repurposed. Originally, this area was part of a grant given to newly free slaves of the Dutch West Indies Company and the site of the first free settlement for African-Americans in Manhattan. Now it is home to small eccentric boutiques who rival the shops along the Champs-Élysées. Looking for rare art pieces? Check out the Sicis gallery, a gallery who focuses on displaying life-size "Mannequins" of visual art expression. Sicic interlocutors go beyond the words "Art" and "Factor." Flaunt that Sicis takes production, and "translates it into action of an intensification of time and space, inconsistent in everyday life. When walking into the main floor, you are greeted by a giant stiletto and an intricate velvet chair with the most intricate gold latticework purposefully place to leave one speechless. I was treated to an independent tour of the second floor which houses several private collections and office space for the Sicis artists. You are viewing art while the next concept is being born in the very next corner. I was lucky enough to be given permission to share the amazing Marilyn Monroe wall. Touring Sicis Gallery is a Soho must! Images Courtesy of Sicis Gallery

THE GLAMOURHOLICS CURBSIDE TRUCK HAS FASHION TO GO!

Inside the Launch of the Fash

46

Faรงon | Fall 2013

hion Truck Revolution It’s always been every fashionista’s dream to get any last minute glamour delivered to them wherever they might be. Now, thanks to the Curbside Fashion Truck, it’s a dream come true! The Glamourholics Curbside Fashion Truck, the brainchild of fashionista and entrepreneur Myss Stephens, launched this summer with a little soiree at the Panache Restaurant Guests were greeted with a cute gift bag that was full of curious little products, and the notoriously delicious Skinny Girl cocktail (if I’m not mistaken, it was Skinny Girl Vodka with Cranberry Juice with a splash of soda water. Yum!) Before the ribbon cutting, I indulged myself on appetizers, such as calamari and bruschetta, and tried the complimentary services of iam2Sassy, who provided eye waxes and lash applications, making every guest look even more fabulous than they were when they walked through the door. But now about the truck! This pink truck was not easy to miss. It grabbed your attention for sure. It made me wonder what fabulous fashionable goodies were inside. Even though it looked like a truck on the outside, the interior was tastefully done. It was setup just like a beautiful boutique full of colorful garments and accessories. The atmosphere was so inviting that I didn't want to leave. The carefully curated collection on the Glamourholics Curbside Fashion Truck collection was affordable, with garments and accessories ranging from $20 to $70. It was virtually impossible not to purchase something. I so excited to see this eye-catching "glam on the go" rolling around DC.
