EDITOR’S LETTER

I Heart Vintage My love, no, obsession for vintage clothing developed when I was a teenager working in a local thrift store. I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into apparel production back in the day. It was a different beast. A little piece of each garment worker’s pride was interwoven in the fabric of every item. Last night, I watched the documentary “Triangle” about the catastrophic 1911 fire in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory that killed 146 factory workers, mostly immigrant women. These dedicated women usually worked nine hours a day on weekdays plus seven hours on Saturdays. They earned between $7 and $12 a week. In the aftermath of this tragedy and countless other factory fires, there were finally state and National laws enacted to protect workers. So remember when you are wearing your beautiful vintage find that there was a tremendous amount of blood, sweat, and tears, literally, that went into the production of that garment. I dedicate this issue to all of the factory workers who have lost their lives while on duty.

JAMES HACKLEY (@BESPOKENOTBROKE)

Samantha Simms and Stacie Washington are the discerning curators of Instant Vintage 78. Instant Vintage 78 is an online boutique that provides carefully curated, high fashion collections of women’s and men’s vintage clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories. They hand select unique, well-crafted gems that are classic in style and will translate through the decades. They worked with the Fashion Editors to style Model Raven in “Le Liaison.”

James Hackley is the owner and Chief Style Officer (CSO) of Bespoke Not Broke. Bespoke is a wonderfully unique men’s boutique that specializes in vintage and upscale resale clothing, shoes, and accessories. The company was launched to help bridge the economic gap that has always existed between the “haves” and “have nots” when it comes to fashion and style. Although many of their custom and unique items were formerly in the possession of the professional athletes, doctors, lawyers, lobbyists, Senators, Congressmen, and C-level business executives in the Washington D.C. area; James regularly travels from coast-to-coast scouring many of the Nation’s consignment, vintage, and thrift stores in search of those elusive pieces. James worked with the Fashion Editors to style Model Desmond in “Le Liaison.”

BEAUTY ADVICE

Spring Forward Your Spring Beauty Routine

Perfecting Skin Care Colorful f lowers, warmer air, and longer days are what we look for ward to when it comes to spring . But what about beauty? It's now time to change your beauty habits and skin regiments. The trend for spring is all about fresh, dewy skin with washes of color. This trend is simple, easy and fun. With ever ything in beauty, never over think it or over do it. Less is more this spring . Skin care should always be a priority whether you wear makeup or not. It's ver y important to understand your skin and understand what you want to correct. If you wear makeup or have dr y/sensitive skin, you want to focus on creamy/foaming face washes. Usually creamy washes will pick up extra dirt and impurities from your skin.

Bare Minerals Deep Cleansing Foam, bareescentuals.com, $20 Experiencing a lot of oil or breakouts? Focus on gel cleansers. Gel cleansers will help mattif y and close pores to help keep the oil out.

MAC Green Gel Cleanser, maccosmetics.com $25

My favorite mositurizers: 1. Ole Henriksen Truth Revealed Super Crème SPF 15, olehenriksen.com, $55 2. Clinique Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Lotion SPF 20, clinique.com, $47 3. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, kiehls.com, $26.50- $46.50

Façon | Spring 2014

Hydrating Coverage Don’t be afraid to show off you skin. Of course, we all have minor imperfections that we want to cover. But remember to not over do it. Almost ever y makeup brand offers tinted moisturizers and BB Creams. Tinted moisturizers and BB creams offer slight coverage while allowing your skin to breath. These products are simple, easy to put on, and easy to carr y around.

1. AJ Crimson BB + D Cream ajcrimson.com, $28 2. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream smashbox.com, $39 3. Studio Moisture Tint, $32 maccosmetics.com

Most of us have some sort of skin discoloration or hyperpigmentation, dark circles, dark spots or light spots and light coverage just may not be enough…. Or is it? Tr y pairing your BB Cream or Tinted moisturizer with a color corrector. My favorite color corrector is M AC prep & prime CC Colour correcting SPF 30, $25.00- $30.00.M AC CC comes in 4 colors and 3 types, cream, loose powder and a compact.

Add a little color here, a little color there... So once you have perfected your skin, it's now time to add some color. All winter we have been focusing on contouring , perfecting our cut crease, and bold dark lips. How do you choose where to focus your color? Look at your face and choose once feature to play up. Trending for lips: Orange/Coral

ART & LIFESTYLE

Editor’s Pick

Alexis Jackson, Art & Lifestyle Editor | @jadoreMADAV

Poop-oop-ee-doop! VINTAGE STYLE ICON BETTY BOOP IS STILL A FASHION INFLUENCER Betty Boop is still making a splash after more than seven decades. There are very few households in America who don't know a little something about the infamous Ms. Betty Boop. Much can be said about the animated cartoon character. Created by Max Fleisher in 1930, Betty first appeared on a Dizzy Dishes cartoon, released by Paramount Pictures. Betty’s likeness was originally modelled after the 1930’s actress Helen Kane. In her first introduction to the world, the curvy damsel appeared as a French Poodle. By 1932, her ears were replaced with hoop earrings and her long nose replaced by a cute button nose. 1 Betty Boop is regarded as one of the first and most famous sex symbols on the animated screen.2 She made it okay to have curves. Unfortunately, Betty’s sexuality was toned down by the Production Code of 1934. Gone were her hoops and bracelets. Down came the hemline and up came her bust line. She became less marketed to adults and more to juveniles, even her high pitched voice was brought down to reflect a socially responsible and upstanding citizen. The sexy vixen that America loved became a demure housewife and overnight the starlet that America loved, led to her cartoons eventually being yanked off the air nine years after its debut. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, the resurgence of Betty Boop in the movie, Roger Rabbit, and the popularity of the revamped in color version of Betty Boop (made possible by Technicolor in the 1970’s) was her comeback. Her likeness was reproduced on toys, purses, and every other knick knack money could buy. The fact she has survived over seven decades and is still loved and appreciated, showed us just how “vintage” an icon, even though a cartoon, can be. Even today, you can find an abundance of apparel sporting this iconic vixen's image. She appears on everything from tees to pajamas, skirts and jackets, hats — you name it. Don't be afraid to let your inner Betty Boop out from time to time. Joyrich Betty Boop T-Shirt Dress, $128 Nasty Gal,

PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT CHANGING LIVES THROUGH ART

Denik When most college guys are partying and pretending to not waste their parents' money, Tyler Tolson and his band of merry men at Utah State University decided to change the world—one journal at a time. Denik (denik.com) started out from a grassroots street team of book-slingers to a grassroots, artsy-ecletic bunch, the creative entrepreneurs are now slinging books to customers, corporations, and clients across the globe. These beautifully designed journals are the result of artist submissions. Folks from all around the world submit their artwork. The Denik team review submissions in search of the best. These submissions come from a wide range of artists from well know illustrators to high schoolers with art on their minds. For each book sold, Denik donates $1 to the building of a school around the world. Denik's core belief is that art can definitely change the world through improving educational opportunities for those who need it the most. Every year, they partner with nonprofit organizations that build and maintain the schools in different parts of the world. Denik also gives five percent of sales to the cover artists as a royalty. We heart Denik, big time.
