EDITOR'S NOTE

JANICE SUSAN WALLACE

Editor-in-Chief

VINTAGE REVIVAL Mixing the new with the old is always on trend to me. I love vintage and retro everything. So I'm excited that the ‘70s are back in a big, big way.

S

pring is here. It is my favorite time of the year for a number of reasons. For starters, it's our Vintage issue. Since I'm obsessed with vintage, it's one of my favorite issues to put together. Second, it's spring! What is there not to love about the trees turning green, flowers blooming, birds chirping and the beautiful warm days. But the best reason is that I get to put away those heavy coats, sweaters, and boots and switch to lighter, colorful, happier clothes and shoes. This issue is also our first issue since I made the decision to give the magazine a fresh, new look. I felt that we needed a bit of a facelift and we added a few sections to expand on our mission to bring the best emerging designers to you. That's so important to me and our team. It's the reason why we even exist. There are so many talented designers who are just trying to get their feet in the door. Since

4

FAÇON MAGAZINE | SPRING 2015

so much of the industry focuses on established designers, these amazing voices get lost in the crowd. We are their voice. Always will be. Our Capsule Show NYC FW15 recap spotlights our favorites from the show. It was just sensory overload in such an amazing way. We also caught up with shoe designer, Obi Cymatica to learn what's on the mind of the guy who designs shoes. Also, Model Chasity Nycole shares her love of vintage. Finally, it was a must that we showed some love for the Black movie icons of the Seventies. Their style definitely would identify them as fashion icons of that era. As always, if there's a designer who wants to get our attention, email us at info@faconmagazine.com. Have a question or comment for me, send an email to editor@faconmagazine.com. Enjoy.

7 questions for

OBI CYMATICA

Obi Cymatica is one of New York’s newest talents. Early in his career, an eye for design and illustration earned the designer a place working for fashion greats such as Jimmy Choo, Oscar De La Renta, and BCBG, before launching his own line. 1.

2.

We love shoes. We love shoe designers even more. So why did you choose shoe design over apparel design? I focused on shoes because I can make shoes for all women, unlike clothes, where you can only make clothes for a specific body type. Where do you go for inspiration for your designs? MUSIC! I cannot start a collection without music playing very loudly in the background. What has been the hardest lesson that you’ve learned about designing shoes? Owning a business has being the hardest part of designing shoes. It's not all just glamour. There is a lot of hard work that needs to be done and if you don't stay focused, you will fail. Are you a shoe guy? How many pairs of shoes do you own? Sadly I'm not a shoe guy. I only have ten pairs of shoes, but I only really wear six. I do think every man needs two pairs of black shoes ( one for everyday wear and one for dinner). Describe your personal style. Who are your favorite designers or places to shop? My style is very quiet and understated. I wear blazers and leather jackets. I mostly shopping at small independent stores or at big stores like Bloomingdales. My favorite menswear designers are Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Helmut Lang. Who are your style icons and why? Well I'm still a big fan of John Galliano and Manolo Blahnik is my hero. I got a chance to meet him and Angelina Jolie. What are the three things that you cannot live without? I cannot live without my phone, pen & paper, and music. www. obicymatica.net SPRING 2015 |FAÇON MAGAZINE

WHAT DOMINICA LOVES LIGHT WEIGHT

When choosing your coverage opt for makeup that is light, such as sheer coverage powders, tinted moisturizers or BB creams. When applying your coverage, remember you are trying to make the skin look even. So you may not need to apply coverage all over the face. Our faces are lighter in the center, so you may want to cover lightly in the center and heavier (even a warmer tone) around the perimeter of the face.

for your eyes

LINE IT UP

Eyeliner gives shape and intensity to your eyes. My favorite liner look is a small wing with a pop of color liner at the bottom. *Tip: Pay close attention to the shape of your lid. If you have a smaller lid, make sure you keep your liner pretty thin. A thicker line will cut your eye and make them look smaller.

FLASHY LASHES

You don't always need colorful shadows to bring attention to your eyes. For bright eyes, all you need is a mascara that adds length and volume. The combination of length and volume will bring out the color of your eyes and also make the eyes appear nice and open. *TIP: Don't neglect your bottom lashes. They are the icing on the cake.

BEAUTY ADVICE

LOVE THE SKIN YOU'RE IN

for your SKIN

Skin is your foundation. It all starts there. Understanding your skin will make finding your perfect skin care much easier. What type of skin do you have? • • • • •

Dry Skin: You experience tightness or dry spots. Normal: No tightness, but you have a little oil in the T-Zone. Oily Skin: Shiny skin, enlarged pores, and/or blackheads. Sensitive Skin: Your skin is easily irritated or it's thin. Aging/Damaged Skin: You have wrinkles, dark spots, and/or tightness.

What are my skin concerns? Identify what concerns you about your skin. For example, someone with dry skin should focus on hydrating their skin, no gels or anything that mattifies. Am I following a skincare regiment? To see results you must be consistent and use your products twice a day (or as directed). Skin care takes patience. It takes 28 days to see full results. Give it at least 2 weeks to see minimal results. If you are unsure how to answer these questions, you can always seek a professional dermatologist or esthetician.

BEAUTY SPY

KHALILAH SAYS... 7 CREATIVE BEAUTY TRICKS 1. Use lip liners to create your favorite lip color. Have you ever wanted to wear a particular shade of lipstick but just can’t seem to find it on the shelves? Create it yourself using lip liners. Use two or three different shades to create a perfect lip. Start by taking the deepest shade to line and slightly fill in the lips. Then take the second, lighter shade and fill in the center and blend. Add a gloss if you want shine. 2. Use eye makeup remover to remove lipstick. You know what it’s like when you are removing your makeup but that lip color won’t budge. Just saturate a cotton round with waterproof eye makeup remover and swipe away residual color. 3. You can use eyeshadow as brow powder. If you need a particular color to fill in your brow but don’t have an actual brow product to do so, you may already have an eyeshadow that can do the job. Just make sure it is a matte formulation, unless of course you want a shiny brow. 4. Try using a toothbrush on your lips. Using a toothbrush to exfoliate your lips is very convenient because it is something you use on a daily basis. 5. Use white nail polish as a base. White nail polish makes the perfect base for any nail polish. It especially makes nude nail polish pop. All you need is one even coat of a white nail polish. Let it dry, then apply two coats of your favorite nail polish followed by a top coat. 6. Did you know that you can dry your nails quickly by running them under cold water? The cold water helps to set and solidify the nail polish. It’s great to do it when you are in a hurry and don’t have drying drops or a nail dryer. 7. Translucent powder will mattify your favorite lipstick. Love the lip color you are wearing but wish you had a matte version? Create it by dusting translucent powder on your lips. Take a piece of tissue and lay it on top of your lips. Then take a fluffy powder brush and dust translucent powder on top. Gently remove the tissue and there you have it−a matte lip in your favorite shade.

Havana was not just a place to kick up your feet, it was also as the back drop to many old films like A Message to Garcia (1936) Our Man in Havana (1959), A Lady Without Passport (1950), Havana Rose (1951). This is not a country of the Cineplex. It’s a country of small movie houses that show old Hollywood movies. Very little has changed and most people like it that way.
