The ending of Ramadan

IDUL FITRI JUNE 2018

Idul Fitri, the first day of the Islamic month of Shawal (Eid-al-fitr in Arabic), marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. It is an important religious holiday for Muslims as it stresses the importance of unity for the Islamic community. Idul Fitri 2018 in Indonesia is due to begin in the evening of Thursday June 14th.

Gililife 18

Did you know? A lovely tradition in Indonesia and indeed in many parts of Muslim Southeast Asia, is the practice of “open house” at Idul Fitri. Anyone – in particular community leaders - will open their doors for a number of hours on the two-day holiday of Idul Fitri and welcome guests, friends and family, to drop by and enjoy local snacks, delicacies, drinks and a chat. The common greeting at this time is “mohon maaf lahir batin”, meaning roughly “forgive me for any sins or mistakes” made over the past year. 19 Gililife

THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 26

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 28

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 29 Gililife

DESTINATION

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle, where time seems Gililife 30

to bend and life seems to slow down. Out of the three Gili’s, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by big crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet

GILI MENO

interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

DESTINATION

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

SPECIES

This months featured species

The Whitespotted

BOXFISH

You have probably noticed a tropical fish that looks like a box, sometimes very colourful. This is the Whitespotted Boxfish, a marine species that can be found across the world’s tropical waters between 3 and 30 metres of depth, usually in coral and rocky reefs. This fierce carnivore is known for its predation techniques and especially females have a special way to hunt: they blow a strong jet of water into the substrate in order to unearth small prey.

The Whitespotted Boxfish can grow up to 25 cm and presents a remarkable sexual dimorphism. While males are very colourful, with red, orange and yellow spots on a bright blue body, females have a dark coloured body spotted in white and brown. They typically live in harems composed of one male and many females.

CORRECTION NOTICE - SCORPION FISH: Contrary to reported on our May issue, Scorpion fish DO NOT attack prey by stunning them with their venom, but their venomous spines keep predators away and can be very painful. Gililife 36

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 38

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of revallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 40

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

41 Gililife

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 42

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 44

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

THE OCEAN "Our planet is a blue planet: over seventy percent of it is covered by the sea. The Pacific Ocean alone covers half the globe. You can fly across it non-stop for twelve hours and still see nothing more than a speck of land." — David Attenborough -

D I D YO U K N OW ? When a whale dies, it falls at the bottom of the ocean, where it provides food to other organisms for up to 75 years. Gililife 50

Blue THE

PLANET

We tend to call the planet we live on “the Earth”, while it’s actually mostly made by water. Seventy (70!!) % of the surface of our planet is in fact covered by the ocean, which represents 97% of the world’s water supply. The ocean is vast and mysterious, as scientists have not unveiled all the secrets held by these vast bodies of salty water surrounding the continents. Life began in the oceans millions of years ago and it remains the home of the majority of living organisms, from the smallest plankton to the largest whale, from microscopic algae to the massive coral reef. Oceans greatly affect life in and outside their waters and are crucial to the comfort and survival of the lives of billions of people and of living beings. Oceans are a cradle of diversity, a treasure-chest of resources and what

distinguishes our small planet from the rest of the known Universe. The oceans are divided in fours major sections, namely the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Arctic. All the seas and salty bodies of water can be comprised in these largest areas. The ocean can be as deep as 11,000 km, like in the Mariana Trenches, although half of the world’s salty waters are about 3 km deep. The Indonesian archipelago is located between the Pacific and the Indian ocean and is part of the Coral Triangle, a geographic area that hosts about 76% of the world´s coral species and almost 40% of the world´s coral reef fish species. Million of people rely on the ocean’s resources. The livelihood of almost 3 million Indonesian households directly depends on marine resources and half of the country’s animal proteins are sourced from fish and seafood. 51 Gililife

THE OCEAN Gililife 52

D OW N I N THE REALM OF

Perpetual DA R K N E S S

As the sea gets deeper, light and temperature decrease and water pressure increases, giving way to a dark and extreme environment where life is intolerable to humans and requires tremendous adaptations to the life forms that live there. The lowest layer of the sea is one of the least unexplored and most mysterious zones of the earth. The deepest point of the oceans is in the Mariana Trench, at a measured depth of almost 11 km. Deprived of most sunlight, in the deepsea there are no plants, low oxygen levels, extremely high pressure and scarce resources for organisms to rely on. Immense abyssal plains and deep brine pools, namely basins of very salty

water, characterise this environment. In spite of these harsh conditions, life thrives. Volcanic water springing from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, fissures in the seafloor, is an important source of heat and energy, while marine snow, a continuous rain of organic matter, provides food to many deepsea life forms. Water springing from hydrothermal vents is rich in minerals. More than 300 species of different taxonomic groups have been observed living around hydrothermal vents. Organisms that live at such depths have developed specific survival strategies and range from colossal sharp-eyed predators, eyeless scavengers and bioluminescent animals emitting light with their body.

THE OCEAN

Impact HUMAN

The biggest threat to the oceans’ well-beings is human activity, which impacts nearly all oceans around the world. Environmental disasters such as oil and toxic substances spilling by the naval and the industrial sector as well as practices such as throwing garbage and sewage into the oceans are seriously affecting the oceans’ health. In addition, the oceans’

Gililife 54

resources are being depleted at an alarming rate, with widespread illegal fishing causing many fish species to be endangered. The great garbage patch is probably the most appalling result of human activity in the oceans. A gyre of marine debris mainly composed of microscopic plastic debris extends for an area in the Pacific ocean that ranges between the size of Texas and the size of Russia (between 700 thousand and 15 million square metres). Conservationists estimate the Great Garbage Patch is made of about 80,000 metric tonnes of debris, most of which do not exceed 0,5 cm of size.

W H AT YO U C A N D O TO H E L P P ROT E C T T H E O C E A N Refuse plastic! No straws, no take away food in disposable containers, refuse plastic bags and prefer large packages when available. Do not buy single-use shampoo/cleaning products sachets and always carry a refillable water bottle! Join a beach clean up! Many dive shops in the Gili’s organise a weekly beach clean up. Have fun while protecting the planet! Refuse to eat small fish and endangered species (ex: baby tuna and shark fins!) DO NOT THROW CIGARETTES ON THE FLOOR DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS OR STRAWS Plastic is not biodegradable. Re-use your bags or buy a re-useable bag and keep it with you. And do not use plastic straws unless you absolutely need it.

2.

Collecting sea shells & corals, walking on, and touching reefs increases beach erosion

Enjoy Gili Reefs by watching & protecting. Do not take anything from the beach or ocean.

DO NOT COLLECT CORAL OR SEA SHELLS FROM THE OCEAN OR THE BEACH They are living animals, and taking them from their environment will kill them. Even if coral looks dead or white these pieces eventually become sand. Collecting anything from the beach will increase beach erosion.

3.

DO NOT TOUCH OR WALK ON THE REEF DO NOT DROP ANCHOR ON FRAGILE LIVING CORAL REEFS Coral and other animals are very fragile organisms which grow very slowly. Interacting with the oceans ecosystem will damage it. Respect their space and watch from a distance. An anchor dropped will destroy many of these corals and won't allow the reef to recover.

THE SANCTUARY SACROSANCT HAPPINESS IN THE HEART OF GILI AIR GILI AIR The word "Sanctuary" comes from the Latin "sanctuarium", which derives from "sanctus" meaning "holy". In the Middle Ages, this word referred to sacred places where fugitives could seek asylum. The tradition of offering sanctuary to runaways dates back to Ancient Greece, when temples were considered the inviolable abode of the Gods, and therefore immune to secular legislation. In England, the right to sanctuary lasted until 1624. Uncountable churches across the Kingdom, among which Westminster Abbey, offered sacrosanct protection to asylum seekers for all the Middle Ages, through the Rennaissance and during the whole Elizabethan era. The surrounding areas to these untouchable holy places were known as "sanctuary crosses", because sometimes this protective right extended beyond the church's walls.

The meaning of a sanctuary being a special, protected and sometimes holy site has remained. In modern days, the word sanctuary also indicates a natural reserve, specifically an area where wildlife and biodiversity are protected. A wildlife sanctuary is a place often not opened to the public, which primaly acts on behalf and for the interests of its non-human residents. Although we may not need to hide from the Inquisition, at some times of our life many of us have probably dreamt of a place where we could be safe and forget it all, taking a rest from the troubles of the outside world. The Gili islands can certainly be considered a tropical "sanctuary cross", and it is not surprising then that the owners of "The Sanctuary" in Gili Air chose this name for a property where the guests' privacy and needs are an inviolable and sacrosanct right. 61 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Located in the North of Gili Air, in a villas residential area on the sunset side of the island, The Sanctuary is a compound of 3 two-bedroom villas with private swimming pool. Surrounded by large green fields few hundred metres from the beach, The Sanctuary is a haven of peace. "If i come to paradise, I want to experience a piece of paradise". Antony, the marketing director, proudly said. "At the same time, I want an experience of exotic, of being somewhere else and feel outside as much as possible, sit in and feel the garden as well as the comfort of my home." he added. Antony worked many years in the construction trade in the UK and supervised the construction and the design of the property. His touch can be felt in the finishings and details as well as in the functionality of

Gililife 62

the villas. The very well curated light design, the abundance of sockets and working stations make it the perfect place for digital nomads seeking for the perfect working spot. The large pool, the spacious kitchen and the big comfy bedrooms turn The Sanctuary in the ideal location for a family holiday or for a getaway with a group of friends. The extensive use of natural materials such as wood and alangalang create a tropical atmosphere without compromising on the villa's cleaninness and functionality. Whether you enjoy the sunset view from the lumbung on the second storey, relax in the pool or work on the beautiful large wooden table on the deck, The Sanctuary will offer you the peace and care you need.

Spread Happiness It is said that the design of a place can be copied, but not the quality and care of its customer service. "At The Sanctuary, our focus is the guests' happiness; we are sensitive to their needs so they can have the most amazing holiday." said Ado Wahab, the local manager. Along with Pian, Tadi and the rest of the crew, the staff at the Sanctuary is a team of smiley and friendly hospitality experts. Offering full assistance for travel and activity tips before and during the guests' stay, the staff also displays a refined taste for decoration and has the talent of taking care of guests as if they were members of their own family. This dedication is also due to the employees' advantageous and serene working environment. Indeed, all employees have access to a cash benefit, interest-free microcredit system to allow them to make solid future prospects and have two days off every week, so that they can enjoy their personal family and social life. "If everyday you could make at least one new friend and make them happy, how happy would you be?" Ado added with a smile.

THE RABBIT TREE HOSTEL AT THE EDGE OF IMAGINATION AND REALITY, DREAMS COME TO LIFE GILI MENO In the centre of Gili Meno there is a place where curious people hang out and a variety of unusual activities take place; a place where out-of-the-box is synonymous with ordinary and where ordinary does not exist. If you pass by, your curiosity won’t escape the magnetism of this place. As you wonder if it is a house or a tree with a rabbits burrow at the bottom, you get swallowed into the back door of a wardrobe. Once inside, you realise that this place is more like a dream than a space, more like a journey of experiences than an hostel. It borders on the edge of imagination and reality; a place where dreams come to life.

A legend says that the rabbit tree was founded by a tribe made of tiny small beings indefinietly chasing a rabbit. Some people claim they have seen it’s ears, others followed it’s tracks. Was it the tribe who built it with tiny doors and multiple hard to find secret passages, or did they discover it just like you? Maybe it is really growing like a tree, naturally becoming the meeting point for creative people and the dwelling of those who they connect with on their way. Like them, you‘ll soon discover how captivating the space becomes, the more you explore. Perhaps the rabbit has been living in his creation all along, patiently waiting to be exposed. Who can tell for sure!

65 Gililife

GILI ZOOM You could ask questions at the Rabbit Tree, but only your own experiences will provide you with the answers. You will find all you need as you move up, down and sideways. Wander around to discover the star gazing balcony, relax on a giant bean bag, or end up in the cinema on top of rabbit caves emerging from the sand. Have a seat at the table and listen to the water trickling down as it transforms into a swimming pool. Look up above you as people appear to float in a giant net, soon realising that your eyes can look through the ceiling and the floor now. No space has a definite function, but all have more than one; it is all up to you. As you observe

Gililife 66

roof tiles becoming a waterfall and you get beers in a bucket that pops up from the floor, you may start wondering what’s going on. As you dive into an abundance of plastic balls under your bunk bed or you gaze at your reflection in a mirror shattered in a thousand pieces, you may wonder again. There is more to ponder if all the pillows in your bedroom are held hostage in a cage above you, ready to be released only once you find the key. Forget about pre-conceptions and open your eyes to imagine and explore this new extraordinary world. Release your creative energy and switch on the dream machine to see opportunities and possibilities where others see walls and barriers.

At the Rabbit Tree you will discover in this apparently random creation, the meaning of each colour, brick and piece of furniture to see how one space can become two, three, four or even more. Accommodating up to 34 people in an undefined number of possibilities and different rooms, the Rabbit Tree Hostel is a must-see & experience place. From the Passion Bedroom, featuring ropes and broken mirrors to the Bola Bola dorm where you can swim in sea of plastic balls, to the Grandparents room where vintage style is never outdated, to the Bamboo Forest for a jungle excursion like no other. Not a single room is ordinary or taken for granted. Make the Bird House room your preferred observation corner, or hideout in the Treehouse, or escape to the Floating Boat to get a different view on art and life. Once you step inside, we’ve already lost control of you! Through your experiences, the Rabbit Tree becomes something new each and every day. Come experience the magic for yourself. Welcome.

SUNSET BEACH YOGA AT VILLA SUNSET BEACH BEACHFRONT PROPERTY GILI TRAWANGAN

Have you ever spent time upsidedown? Have you ever placed your heart above your head and tried to see things from a different point of view? Upside down, the ocean becomes the sky and the sky turns into an ocean of calmness that moves and changes colour as the day unfolds. When you are upside-down, perspectives turn inside out and you feel most of your beliefs are just a matter of perception. Upside down, your pulsing heart is closer to the immensity of the sky than the thoughts hammering in your brain, and you suddenly feel more connected to the outside elements and to yourself. Inversions – as upside down postures are known in the Yoga Asana practice – are an integral part of the physical aspect of this ancient philosophy.

Inversions bring fresh blood to all our organs and positively influence our cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous and endocrine systems. Turning upside down is one of the healthiest ways to get benefits to many physiological processes of the body. If you are not familiar with yoga, it is better to start with simple inversions such as putting your feet up (Viparita Karani), which will already bring benefits such as reduce the risk of varicose veins. However, if you feel you can bring your practice a step further, then Aerial Yoga practices are for you! Sunset Beach Yoga is becoming the Gili’s leading yoga centre in Aerial Yoga. GILI FRUIT

RAMBUTAN Native to Malaysia and belonging to the family of soapberries (Sapindaceae), rambutan are tropical fruits easily recognisable by a rough, spiky and hairy red skin. In fact, the name rambutan derives from the Malay/Indonesian word “rambut”, which means “hair. The flesh is white and sweet similar to lychees, though they are slightly bigger and less sweet, with a slight acidic taste. They grow on trees in clusters; when ripe, these ovois-shaped fruits can reach up to 6 cm in length. At its core, the rambutan bears a single seed, which is safe to eat when roasted. Lombok is a great place to taste rambutan; stop at any fruit sellers on the road and you will never get enough!

HEALTH PROPERTIES Rich source of dietary fibre, aids in weight reduction Contains Vitamin C and B3 and is good to boost the immune system High in iron content, which helps controlling the amount of oxygen in the body Leaves are used to alleviate pain from headache A decoction of the roots is used to lower fever Gililife 80

INGREDIENTS 1 tsp. ground turmeric 4 garlic cloves 4 kaffir lime leaves 3 red chiles 1 stalk lemongrass, smashed One 5cm piece galangal root, (peeled and thinly sliced)

8 rambutan 2 tbsp. peanut oil 1⁄2 small pineapple 1 medium yellow onion 2 ½ cups coconut milk 2 cups chicken stock 400 gr boneless skinless chicken breasts (thinly sliced) 1 tbsp. fish sauce 2 tsp. palm sugar or light brown sugar

RAMBUTAN CURRY

This spicy and sweet summer curry makes the best of fresh rambutans and gives a twist to a traditional recipe!

PREPARATION • Pound the garlic, lime leaves, chiles, lemongrass, and galangal with the turmeric until a coarse curry paste is formed. • Peel the rambutans and remove the soft flesh, place in a bowl • Over medium-high fire, cook the pineapple cut in small cubes until slightly caramelized, about 4 minutes. • Add the onions. Cook, stirring, until golden brown, 4 minutes. • Add the curry paste, and cook for about 2 minutes more. • Pour in the coconut milk and stock, and bring to a boil, reduce the heat to maintain a simmer, and cook for about 20 minutes.

• Stir in the chicken, and continue to simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 8 minutes. • Add the reserved pineapple and rambutan, and cook for about 2 minutes. • Remove the curry from the heat, and stir in the fish sauce and palm sugar. • Serve with steamed rice
