YOU ARE ON THE GILI ISLANDS
CULTURE &HISTORY
The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October.
The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly
different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle on the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions, but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from

a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping, entertainment and activities. Luxury Villas abound and less expensive accommodation is available for the budget traveller. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities.
Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be eyeopening, its not an escape from reality, just a slightly different one, but understandably surreal none the less! There are several conservation organisations based here including Gili Eco Trust, The Gili Shark Foundation, Cats of Gili and Horses of Gili. For getting involved in beach clean ups visit one of the dive centres on the island, make your vacation meaningful by giving back to the island! As you may know - there is no motorized transport on the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.
Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

FREEDIVING A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE
Summertime as a kid meant long days at the pool, which would end when my mom stood up and walked over to us to tell us it was time to go home. Trying to extend the day for just a few more minutes, as soon as I would see my mom coming, I would take one breath and swim underwater to the other side of the pool so that my mom couldn’t talk to me. Little did I know that this was my unofficial introduction into freediving.
I had never tried scuba and definitely had never heard the term freediving before signing up for my first course. But after talking to the instructors of the shop, they had my attention. I’ve said for years that I am terrible at breathing, so I wasn’t sure I would be any good at freediving. What I learned is that it is not so much about how you breathe, but about techniques, you learn to relax your body and mind so that you use less oxygen.
Freediving is a thing that almost everyone does, but you might not be familiar with the term either! Have you gone snorkeling and dived down to the bottom to get a closer look? That is freediving! Have you challenged your friends to see who could hold their breath the longest in the pool? Also freediving! Are you a surfer that goes for the big waves and spends some time underwater after a wipeout? Freediving. Now that I have completed a few freediving courses on Gili Air, I feel like so much more of the ocean is available to me. When I see turtles on a snorkeling trip, I can safely stay underwater for much longer to be able to observe these beautiful neighbors of ours in their home (from a distance of course, don’t stress out the turtles!). If I see something sparkling from the ocean floor, I know how to equalize the pressure in my ears so that they don’t hurt and I can dive down 20+ meters to check if it is lost pirate treasure (no luck so far). Best of all, I have met so many other freedivers just by spending time going out on fun dives and spending time at the shop. Talking to other people that are also in this small, but very international community is so amazing. Listening to other people who have seen whale sharks, mantas, pyrosome, just makes you want to grab your mask and suit, and a buddy (never freedive alone!), and head out to the nearest ocean to explore and just play in nature’s playground. If you haven’t tried freediving yet, then make the most of your time here in the Gilis and sign up for a course. You will learn more about your body, about your mind, and then apply those things while you freedive and learn more about the ocean. It is an experience that can’t be compared to anything else. The marriage ceremony is called Nyongkolan, and it is divided into specific traditions.
What do you think about having the last say in your marriage, being ‘kidnapped’ away from your family to an unknown home (sometimes towns away!), and then being paraded through town back to your home? For those in western cultures who dream of planning and organizing the moments of your marriage, this marriage ceremony may seem a hard pill to swallow. But for hundreds of members in the Sasak tribe which inhabit Lombok, this is a common, joyous, and sought-after event. 1. Midang Midang is the night which the potential groom will visit his chosen lover to go over their relationship and future plans as a married couple. Their planning must be done by 10:00 PM, or else the bride’s family may intervene and forbid them from ever seeing each other again. 2. Merariq is where the bride will meet the groom at a pre-selected location, and then be taken to his home to be supervised for the next three days. The groom’s family ensures that there is no intimacy during this time.

3. Nyelabar A family member from the groom’s side will go to inform the bride’s family that their daughter has been kidnapped. Financial and ceremonial discussions take place once any issues are resolved. 4. Ngawinang is the official moment of marriage. The two are united in the eyes of God and appreciation is given to the families and villages involved in the ceremony. 5. Nyongkolan The celebratory after-party includes music, dancing and dressing in traditional attire. The party continues to the house of the newly wed bride.

Ocean Magic and Underwater Gardens Although Blue Marlin is the largest and oldest dive company in the Gilis, its Gili Air location is a fairly recent addition. Established in 2016 and now under the direction of charismatic manager Rowan, Blue Marlin Air is quickly becoming popular, while retaining its family feel and personal approach. Originally from the UK, Rowan worked as a diving instructor himself. “I remember my first dive,” Rowan recounts, “it was in Australia and I hated it. But then I went diving in Borneo and got a little hooked.” After working in Borneo, Thailand and the Philippines for many years, he figured it was time for a change and he stopped for a brief holiday in Indonesia and decided to stay. Blue Marlin’s project involves ‘bottle nurseries’: groups of glass bottles to which small pieces of broken coral are attached to encourage them to
grow. With great success: in just a few months the coral has grown immensely and is now surrounded by lovely sea creatures, like baby lionfish! Another project involves collecting pieces of broken coral from the sea: these are then
divided into small pieces, a method called ‘micro fragmentation’, and attached to metal structures. Recently, Blue Marlin has set up a Conservation Diver Course, so that divers can study the reefs and learn how to help repair them.

To ensure equitable distribution, each owner receives a quarter of the profits every four months. “The villas have the highest of standards when it comes to strength and durability,” says Ettienne. “Although they’re single story we’ve created, in our foundation, double story strength.” Each bespoke villa is finished with polished concrete and terrazzo and accommodates two people. They have a courtyard, kitchenette and a sizable splash pool filled with pristine purified water. The inside boasts a queen-sized bed, closets, air conditioning and bathroom with

Bau Nyale Festival Lombok This annual festival is an ancient tradition where people, both locals and tourists alike, flock to capture the rare Nyale sea worms. The caught worms are then used as bait and as a culinary delicacy for the locals. This years celebration will be entered along Seger Beach in Kuta Lombok Village in Pujut Sub-District, Pantai An, Selong, Mawun, Mawi etc. The Festival is due to start on the 14th February.

Whilst looking for a new adventure, his friend referred him to Bulan Madu to fill the vacancy of a cook, however, Herman had never worked as a cook but learnt quickly while on the job. During his spare time he would sit by the bar and would observe his colleagues mix cocktails and serve guests drinks and slowly he learn the skill of bartending and eventually ended up taking over this position. Herman berasal dari bayan Lombok Utara, dia pertama kali memulai bekerja di Gili air sebagai tukang kebun dan bersih-bersih rumah. Sambil mencari pengalaman baru, salah seorang teman mengajaknya untk bekerja di villa bulan madu untuk mengisi posisi dapur sebagai tukang masak, bagaimanapun Herman tidak pernah berpengalaman sebagai tukang masak tapi dia belajar dengan cepat untuk menguasainya. Disela-sela waktu senggangnya, dia sering duduk di bar dan melihat temannya membuat minuman cocktail dan sebagainya dan perlahan dia belajar cara menjadi seorang Bartender, dan akhirnya Sekarang dia bisa di posisi itu.

After spending years overseas working in Bahrain and Qatar, Yadi arrived in Gili Trawangan and started working for Gili Teak in 2014, he loves his
family and is a family man, his ambition is to make his family happy and proud which is why he works so hard. He is passionate about tennis and enjoys watching movies and reading. He really enjoys the lifestyle in Gili Trawangan and would like to support the government in creating a solution for the waste in Gili Trawangan. The main idea being government funded rubbish bins and collection. 2 Slices of Sourdough Bread 1 Avocado 1 Ripe Tomato ½ Onion 2 Poached Eggs 25 grams Feta Cheese Coriander Dill Salt Pepper Lime Juice
Avocado Salsa and Poached Eggs PREPARATION To make the Avocado Salsa, cut the ripe avocado and tomato into small cubes and put into a bowl. Chop the onion, coriander and dill and add it to the bowl. Season with lime juice, salt and pepper. Cut the Sourdough into 2 pieces and toast them in the oven for a few minutes. Poach the 2 eggs and spoon the Avocado Salsa atop the Sourdough. Place the poached eggs on top and garnish with some feta cheese. Enjoy your healthy breakfast!
