ENGLISH

BAHASA INDONESIA

As we shift into the new year the islands are priming up for a busy tourism season ahead. One of the reasons people are interested in traveling to the Gilis and Lombok is to try the local and abundant cuisine with natural herbs, luscious fruits and exotic spices. Local islanders are often seen gathering vitamin rich moringa, health producing turmeric and the tangy tamarind is found in sauces and marinades.

Local markets in Lombok abound with colourful fruits and homegrown vegetables and visitors are lucky enough to be able to obtain exotic fruit at very reasonable prices. Tours can be arranged that allow visitors to experience local markets and also visit local villages to experience how villagers live. Enjoy a healthy holiday while you are over here and make the most of the fresh ingredients available. See you soon on the islands! Editor Gillian Mc Kinon

Nikmati liburan sehat saat anda selama berada di sini dan manfaatkan bahan-bahan segar terbaik. Sampai jumpa di kepulauan ini. Lyly Sri Haryati (Bahasa Indonesian Translation)

Gililife 22

YOU ARE ON THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE &HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October.

The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly

different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle on the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions, but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

GILI TRAWANGAN

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from

Gililife 24

a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping, entertainment and activities. Luxury Villas abound and less expensive accommodation is available for the budget traveller. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities.

Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be eyeopening, its not an escape from reality, just a slightly different one, but understandably surreal none the less! There are several conservation organisations based here including Gili Eco Trust, The Gili Shark Foundation, Cats of Gili and Horses of Gili. For getting involved in beach clean ups visit one of the dive centres on the island, make your vacation meaningful by giving back to the island! As you may know - there is no motorized transport on the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. The island is still reflective of local lifestyle and

GILI MENO

time moves at a leisurely pace. Out of the three Gilis, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by large crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront

terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL BEAUTY AND TRADITIONAL LIVING

LOMBOK

With its largely unspoiled natural environment, vivid, diverse traditional culture and increasing infrastructure, Lombok island is an interesting compromise between touristic Bali and wild Sumbawa. Jagged coasts and sheltered bays, white-sanded empty beaches and lush green hills lined by rice paddies overlooked by majestic Mount Rinjani characterise Lombok’s natural landscape, while in traditional villages a diversity of practices coexist. The island is dotted with mosques, symbols of Islam, the Gililife 38

most practiced religion, but there are some important Hindu temples scattered in the West, heritage of the Hindu tradition. Sasak people, Lombok’s indigenous people, practice a syncretic form of Islam (wetu telu), which blends Hindu-Buddhist influences, Sunni Islam, animism and ancestral worship. Authentic Sasak villages offer a valuable insight into the island’s traditional culture, famous for the turun temurun, Capital city Mataram is a busy town with colourful markets and the gate to Senggigi’s

stunning bays in the North and Mt Rinjani’s green slopes to the East. In the South, world-class surf breaks, a multitude of pristine beaches and gentle hills are an open invitation to explore the surroundings at one’s pace and enjoy the tropical vibe. The East offers a complete different scenery; from waterfalls, rainforests and hills carpeted with rice paddies, the surroundings of Mount Rinjani provide a myriad of hike options, from easy walks to very challenging treks in a beautiful panoramic landscape. In the South-West, facing Lembar harbour and Sekotong, are the less known Gilis (meaning “small island”), where snorkelling in the lively reef and chilling on the empty beaches are the few tourists’ main activity. With its cultural and environmental diversity, Lombok is the ideal destination to discover something new everyday.

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING RESPONSIBLE SNORKELLING: • DO NOT walk on the reef • DO NOT touch ANY sea creatures or reef • DO NOT take ANYTHING from the ocean • BE AWARE of strong currents Gililife 42

Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

FREEDIVING A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

Summertime as a kid meant long days at the pool, which would end when my mom stood up and walked over to us to tell us it was time to go home. Trying to extend the day for just a few more minutes, as soon as I would see my mom coming, I would take one breath and swim underwater to the other side of the pool so that my mom couldn’t talk to me. Little did I know that this was my unofficial introduction into freediving.

I had never tried scuba and definitely had never heard the term freediving before signing up for my first course. But after talking to the instructors of the shop, they had my attention. I’ve said for years that I am terrible at breathing, so I wasn’t sure I would be any good at freediving. What I learned is that it is not so much about how you breathe, but about techniques, you learn to relax your body and mind so that you use less oxygen.

Freediving is a thing that almost everyone does, but you might not be familiar with the term either! Have you gone snorkeling and dived down to the bottom to get a closer look? That is freediving! Have you challenged your friends to see who could hold their breath the longest in the pool? Also freediving! Are you a surfer that goes for the big waves and spends some time underwater after a wipeout? Freediving. Now that I have completed a few freediving courses on Gili Air, I feel like so much more of the ocean is available to me. When I see turtles on a snorkeling trip, I can safely stay underwater for much longer to be able to observe these beautiful neighbors of ours in their home (from a distance of course, don’t stress out the turtles!). If I see something sparkling from the ocean floor, I know how to equalize the pressure in my ears so that they don’t hurt and I can dive down 20+ meters to check if it is lost pirate treasure (no luck so far). Best of all, I have met so many other freedivers just by spending time going out on fun dives and spending time at the shop. Talking to other people that are also in this small, but very international community is so amazing. Listening to other people who have seen whale sharks, mantas, pyrosome, just makes you want to grab your mask and suit, and a buddy (never freedive alone!), and head out to the nearest ocean to explore and just play in nature’s playground. If you haven’t tried freediving yet, then make the most of your time here in the Gilis and sign up for a course. You will learn more about your body, about your mind, and then apply those things while you freedive and learn more about the ocean. It is an experience that can’t be compared to anything else. See you in the blue! Written By: Jen Drew

Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; ear-candles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. MEDICINAL PLANTS

Indonesia is ranked as the third most biodiverse country in the world. With close to 40,000 flowering plants, it’s home to an abundance of flora and fauna. Many of these plants are vital in the practice of traditional medicine. This medicine is an important part of the local culture and is used to treat illnesses from nausea to cancer.

MEDICINAL PLANTS Over time, Indonesian people learned the practice of traditional medicine from their forefathers in order to cure illness and maintain health. By trial and error, people have learned how to distinguish beneficial plants from toxic plants, and non-active ones. Parts of the leaf, root, fruit or tuber (thickened, underground part of a stem) are consumed in the form of juice or eaten in their natural state. They're found in dishes such as salads, sauces, soups and fried foods. They can also add spice and taste to smoothies or juices. Plants are also used as a paste to treat cuts or burns We’ve put together a list of four important, medicinal plants and their use in traditional medicine along with recipes.

Written by Tiffany Bateman

Gililife 58

Recipe: Jamu Juice (wisdom for health) Ingredients: Turmeric, ginger, tamarind, water Instructions: Toast turmeric and ginger in a pan. When toasted, blend it with water. Strain the pulp and seeds then boil the remaining liquid in a pot. Different herbs and spices can be added at this time such as cinnamon and tamarind. After boiling it’s ready to drink.

TUMERIC Turmeric is a plant related to ginger and grows throughout Asia. It’s a common spice that’s used in curries, juices and stir-fries. Its primary active ingredient, circuminoid, is yellow and used to color foods and cosmetics. Historically, turmeric was used in Ayurvedic medicine for many conditions such as breathing problems, rheumatism, serious pain and fatigue. Locally it’s used for inflammation, allergies, stomach problems, detoxification, antiaging and to burn fat. It’s thought to have negative effects on a fetus that can cause a newborn to be underweight.

MEDICINAL PLANTS

M o rin g a Moringa is a tree found in Asia. The leaves and pods are thought to be full of antioxidants and bioactive compounds. They’re said to contain protein, vitamin A, C and B6, iron, riboflavin and magnesium. Moringa leaves may also contain anti-nutrients, which can reduce the absorption of minerals and proteins. The leaves are used locally to reduce blood pressure, decrease cholesterol, control diabetes and to treat cancer. They’re also considered an antioxidant. Bokalour grows with moringa and looks like a drum stick. Locals boil it with water and drink it to cure a fever or stomach issue.

Recipe: Soup (Lek Lek) Ingredients: Moringa, shallots, garlic, chili, ginger, grated coconut Instructions: Place shallots, garlic, chilis, ginger and grated coconut in water to boil. When ingredients are soft add moringa leaves. After a minute it’s ready to drink.

Gililife 60

Recipe: Juice Instructions: Place noni in a jar when it’s very ripe. Let it ferment for two weeks. When it’s ready you can sip it like wine out of a small glass. OR Place ripe noni in a blender with sugar and honey. When blended it’s ready to drink.

M o n k udu Monkudu (noni) is a small, leafy tree found in Southeast Asia. It often grows among lava flows. The fruit, leaves, flowers, stem, bark and roots are used in eastern medicine. They’re ingested or applied topically for a variety of health purposes and sometimes mixed with other herbs. The leaves are used in salads and the fruit is made into juice, which is used to increase blood circulation. Noni is also used to kill harmful bacteria, improve endurance and to treat cancer, inflammation, fever, allergies, hypertension and a cough. It’s said that the first time you taste it you’ll vomit as there’s quite an unpleasant odor. This eventually fades.

MEDICINAL PLANTS

T amarind Tamarind is a tropical fruit found in Southeast Asia, Mexico, the Middle East and the Caribbean. It’s used in dishes around the world. The tamarind tree produces pods filled with seeds and fibrous pulp. The pulp is pasty and has a sweet and sour taste. The fruit is used in sauces, chutneys, marinades, drinks and desserts. It’s also an ingredient in Worcestershire sauce. Tamarind is said to help with digestion, a dry cough, eczema, blood circulation, fat burning, anti-aging, endurance, inflammation and to help improve vision. The leaves are ground and used to treat wounds, burns or bruises. Tamarind is used as a face mask to slow aging. Tamarind juice is thought to relieve lower back pain associated with menstruation.

Recipe: Sari Asam Jawa (Tamarind Juice) Ingredients: Tamarind flesh, water sugar Instructions: Place tamarind flesh and water in a pot. Bring to a boil. Strain to remove seeds and pulp. Return juice to a pot and boil, adding palm sugar to taste. Once dissolved, remove from heat and chill. Add ice cubes and lemon or mint.

UNCLE HERO Hero Sugiono is a well known restaurant owner on Gili Air and gave us some insight into medicinal herbs and flora. Growing up, his parents didn’t have money for a doctor and used traditional medicine when he was sick. If he had a fever, his dad would chew raw onion and spread it across his body and the top of his head. It worked.

As an adult, Hero lived in the jungles of Sumatra for five years working in forestry. He was far away from a pharmacy or western doctor. He soon learned about medicinal plants from the local people. He started using these plants to cure certain ailments. When he was cut he used a plant to stop the bleeding. He used papaya leaves for fever and to relieve his symptoms of dengue. The health of your body correlates to the health of the earth, he says. Your body is your temple. We pass good energy to people and they can feel it. We live in karma. Hero’s inspired by books and loves reading and sharing his knowledge. He wants to inspire people to use natural ingredients for a better life and appreciation of nature. When you’re in the jungle you have to take care of yourself, he says. Mother nature provides medicine. And now he’s on a local island and can share his knowledge. He considers it a blessing.

SPECIES

NUDIBRANCH There are around 3000 known species of nudibranch. The smallest of them are just a millimetre in size and the largest, which is called a Spanish Dancer can be up to 60cm. Their scientific name, Nudibranchia, means naked gills, and describes the feathery gills and horns that most wear on their backs.

that they are poisonous. Nudis that feed on hydroids can store sting cells in the dorsal body wall. Nudis can be found pretty much all over the world, but most of them prefer shallow and tropical waters. Their lifespan is around a month while some others live for more than a year.

Nudis are like other seaslugs hermaphrodites but they rarely fertilize themselves.

Fun Facts...

These colourful carnivores graze on algae, sponges, anemones, corals, barnacles, and even other nudibranchs. Nudibranches are of the most colourful underwater species and effectively use this to warn other animals

Gililife 74

At least two kinds of nudibranch can make sounds, that are audible for humans, but it is not yet known if they do that for defence or attracting a mate. Some Nudis are solar-powered. They feed on algae which derives its energy from photosynthesis which is then used by the nudibranch.
