The festive season here and this month we explore activities for the Gili Islands and Lombok. Thrill-seekers can take part in surfing and watersports, while adventurers can explore remote islands on liveaboards or camp on secluded beaches. Lombok is also home to two professional golf courses, each with spectacular views of the Gili Islands and Mt. Rinjani. A round of golf is only a short boat ride away from the Islands and can be easily organized by any of the local tour operators. Some of the best surfing waves in the world are found along the Lombok coastline and surfing bible, Tracks Magazine has named Desert Point ‘The Best Wave in the World’. Desert Point is not for novices, but fun waves abound along the coastline for learner or intermediate surfers. Learn to surf with one of the many surf schools on popular beaches like Selong Belanak . The Islands also offer plenty of cultural sporting activities like stick fighting, martial arts, and boat rowing. Enjoy the spectacle at festivals and ceremonies around the region. Hiking has become a popular attraction and Lombok offers excursions along Mt. Rinjani. The less experienced hiker will enjoy Pergasingan Hill and be sure to book your adventure with local guides.

Prepare for an adventure-filled getaway and enviable photo opportunities.
See you soon!
Sampai jumpa lagi!

YOU ARE ON THE GILI ISLANDS
CULTURE &HISTORY
The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May
to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals
speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle on the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions, but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in. 21 Gililife

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN
TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from
Gililife 22
a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping, entertainment and activities. Luxury Villas abound and less expensive accommodation is available for the budget traveller. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities.
Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be eyeopening, its not an escape from reality, just a slightly different one, but understandably surreal none the less! There are several conservation organisations based here including Gili Eco Trust, The Gili Shark Foundation, Cats of Gili and Horses of Gili. For getting involved in beach clean ups visit one of the dive centres on the island, make your vacation meaningful by giving back to the island! As you may know - there is no motorized transport on the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

MENO
Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. The island is still reflective of local lifestyle and

time moves at a leisurely pace. Out of the three Gilis, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by large crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront
terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE
The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 30
gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade
Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL BEAUTY AND TRADITIONAL LIVING
LOMBOK
With its largely unspoiled natural environment, vivid, diverse traditional culture and increasing infrastructure, Lombok island is an interesting compromise between touristic Bali and wild Sumbawa. Jagged coasts and sheltered bays, white-sanded empty beaches and lush green hills lined by rice paddies overlooked by majestic Mount Rinjani characterise Lombok’s natural landscape, while in traditional villages a diversity of practices coexist. The island is dotted with mosques, symbols of Islam, the Gililife 36
most practiced religion, but there are some important Hindu temples scattered in the West, heritage of the Hindu tradition. Sasak people, Lombok’s indigenous people, practice a syncretic form of Islam (wetu telu), which blends Hindu-Buddhist influences, Sunni Islam, animism and ancestral worship. Authentic Sasak villages offer a valuable insight into the island’s traditional culture, famous for the turun temurun, Capital city Mataram is a busy town with colourful markets and the gate to Senggigi’s
stunning bays in the North and Mt Rinjani’s green slopes to the East. In the South, world-class surf breaks, a multitude of pristine beaches and gentle hills are an open invitation to explore the surroundings at one’s pace and enjoy the tropical vibe. The East offers a complete different scenery; from waterfalls, rainforests and hills carpeted with rice paddies, the surroundings of Mount Rinjani provide a myriad of hike options, from easy walks to very challenging treks in a beautiful panoramic landscape. In the South-West, facing Lembar harbour and Sekotong, are the less known Gilis (meaning “small island”), where snorkelling in the lively reef and chilling on the empty beaches are the few tourists’ main activity. With its cultural and environmental diversity, Lombok is the ideal destination to discover something new everyday.

An exceptional MARINE WORLD FULL OF beauty & biodiversity
SCUBA DIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Expect to swim with elegant white and black-tip sharks and friendly turtles, observe extravagant cephalopods and ghost pipe-fish hidden in plain sight and explore wrecks turned into the home of Gililife 40
colourful fish schools! Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a sought-after destination for muck diving. There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!
SNORKELLING RESPONSIBLE SNORKELLING: • DO NOT walk on the reef • DO NOT touch ANY sea creatures or reef • DO NOT take ANYTHING from the ocean • BE AWARE of strong currents Gililife 42
Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.
Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

Banded Sea Krait The Banded Sea Krait is a species of a semi-aquatic sea snake that is one of the most venomous snakes on the planet but presents no threat to divers. This interesting sea creature is detected around the waters of the Gili Islands and spends most of its time underwater hunting eels and small fish. The snakes later return to land to digest, rest, reproduce and shed their skin. Some varieties of eels have over time become resistant to the venom of the Sea Krait who hunt by flushing small prey out of crevices. A Sea Krait rarely attacks unless threatened or aggravated and when confronted tends to be shy and non-aggressive. With notably flattened tail-ends and naturally streamlined, black and white striped bodies they are avid hunters. While they are feeding amongst the corals, they are vulnerable to attack,
Gililife 44
but due to their cleverly flattened tails that resemble their heads, predators are easily fooled. Sea Kraits are oviparous which means they develop eggs outside of the body and after copulation, the females lay up to ten eggs per clutch. The eggs are carefully deposited in crevices where they stay until they hatch. The males are smaller than the females and often more than one male will intertwine itself around the female during courtship. Larger females are desirous as they produce bigger and a higher number of offspring. Make sure to book with a reputable dive company and look out for these striking snakes of the ocean. Observe these creatures from a distance and avoid any threatening movements which may startle or disturb these wonders of the sea.

FREEDIVING A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE
Summertime as a kid meant long days at the pool, which would end when my mom stood up and walked over to us to tell us it was time to go home. Trying to extend the day for just a few more minutes, as soon as I would see my mom coming, I would take one breath and swim underwater to the other side of the pool so that my mom couldn’t talk to me. Little did I know that this was my unofficial introduction into freediving.
I had never tried scuba and definitely had never heard the term freediving before signing up for my first course. But after talking to the instructors of the shop, they had my attention. I’ve said for years that I am terrible at breathing, so I wasn’t sure I would be any good at freediving. What I learned is that it is not so much about how you breathe, but about techniques, you learn to relax your body and mind so that you use less oxygen.
Freediving is a thing that almost everyone does, but you might not be familiar with the term either! Have you gone snorkeling and dived down to the bottom to get a closer look? That is freediving! Have you challenged your friends to see who could hold their breath the longest in the pool? Also freediving! Are you a surfer that goes for the big waves and spends some time underwater after a wipeout? Freediving. Now that I have completed a few freediving courses on Gili Air, I feel like so much more of the ocean is available to me. When I see turtles on a snorkeling trip, I can safely stay underwater for much longer to be able to observe these beautiful neighbors of ours in their home (from a distance of course, don’t stress out the turtles!). If I see something sparkling from the ocean floor, I know how to equalize the pressure in my ears so that they don’t hurt and I can dive down 20+ meters to check if it is lost pirate treasure (no luck so far). Best of all, I have met so many other freedivers just by spending time going out on fun dives and spending time at the shop. Talking to other people that are also in this small, but very international community is so amazing. Listening to other people who have seen whale sharks, mantas, pyrosome, just makes you want to grab your mask and suit, and a buddy (never freedive alone!), and head out to the nearest ocean to explore and just play in nature’s playground. If you haven’t tried freediving yet, then make the most of your time here in the Gilis and sign up for a course. You will learn more about your body, about your mind, and then apply those things while you freedive and learn more about the ocean. It is an experience that can’t be compared to anything else. See you in the blue! Written By: Jen Drew

underwater world without venturing into the ocean. Rent a kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a stand-up paddle board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. Lombok has a few nice surf spots which are worth a visit. Please
be aware of currents and tides and surfing experience is advisable. Subwing is the ultimate water sport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while parasailing will take you to new heights and safely land you back in the water! Have fun!

TREAT YOURSELF
SPA
There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; ear-candles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offer quality treatments at a good price. It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of discerning yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.
Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice on the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ADVENTURE
The provocative promise of
Adventure Indonesia's national motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, ’Unity in Diversity’ perfectly encapsulates the uniqueness of the individual islands that make up this vast country. Each island boasts its own culture, activities, cuisine, sport and inherent atmosphere. However, the common thread between them is the provocative promise of adventure in exotic locations. Jemparingan (archery), Karapan Sapi (ox-drawn chariot racing), Lompat batu Nias (rockjumping), Pathol (wrestling), Peresean (stick fighting) and Pencak Selat, (martial arts), Sepak Takraw (a combination of volleyball and football), Pacu Jalur (traditional boat rowing) represent some examples of the traditional sports practiced throughout Indonesia. Most of these traditional sports are centuries old and visitors are encouraged to participate and learn or enjoy the spectacle at festivals and celebrations. For the more intrepid traveler who is after an adrenaline rush, mountain or volcano climbing, skydiving, paragliding, big-wave surfing, shark diving, scuba diving, freediving and intense white-water rafting all feature on the activity’s menu. More relaxing activities include horseback riding, river floats, mild treks, golf, snorkeling and fishing. Many of these options are included in resort packages. As Indonesia is made up of islands, it is effortless to island-hop to experience adventures. If you are wanting a relaxed snorkeling expedition with the guarantee of swimming with sea turtles, visit the Gili Islands, then hop across to Lombok for some golf or take an excursion to one of the surf spots or book a hiking trip up Mt. Rinjani. We have put together a few ideas and trust you will find inspiration to plunge into your own adventure! Be sure to travel in an eco-friendly manner by maintaining a zero impact on nature and the environment by investigating ways to travel sustainably and safely. Enjoy making exciting memories!
Gililife 62
Hiking Exotic landscapes of pronged mountaintops and colorful biodiversity are just a few of the natural wonders you can expect from a trekking experience in Indonesia. Like its active volcanoes, Indonesia is erupting with hiking trails. So, why should you go on this type of terrestrial adventure? Easy! Hiking is a cheap activity that not only elevates your mood and gets your heart pumping, but it also allows you to witness jaw-dropping landscapes firsthand. Can you say photoshoot? For a true Indonesian trekking experience, we highly recommend going with a guide company to Pergasingan Hill and Mount Rinjani. Pergasingan Hill is a good trek for the less experienced hiker, as it provides a more manageable but still magnificent alternative to the strenuous Mount Rinjani treks. Pergasingan Hill is located on the north-eastern side of Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara, 1710 meters above sea level. The hike takes 3 hours to scale and 2.5 hours to descend. Be prepared for panoramic views of the lush rice fields and the viridescent east Lombok valley. You can also catch exquisite sunrises and sunsets surrounded by the hills of Mount Rinjani and the Semblaun village. Mount Rinjani is a strenuous trek for the more advanced hiker. It is an epic three-day journey to summit the second highest volcano in Indonesia. Mount Rinjani remains an active volcano, located on the north-eastern side of Lombok, 2,000 meters above sea level. There are two main entry points to the national park from Sembalun or Senaru. This hike to the crater rim is a true feat, which is rewarded by magnificent views, where clouds billow over a lush valley of vibrant colors. To get here, you will walk on rocky black soil and experience the hues of deep turquoise in Lake Segara Anak. Please be cautious, as this steep trail should be done safely with a local Indonesian guide. Do not forget a hat, scarf, jacket, and gloves, as the summit will be significantly colder. 63 Gililife
Golf Golf may not be the first sport that enters your mind when you think of activities to explore during your time in Indonesia. However, our country of around17,000 islands boasts well over 100 golf courses, each one as unique as our islands are to each other. Designed by well-renowned golf course architects like Peter Thompson, Michael Wolveridge, Bob Moore, and Graham Marsh, courses are spread throughout Indonesia. Most aim at showcasing the unspoiled beauty of Indonesia, incorporating vistas of active volcanoes, pristine beaches, rugged mountains, and wild jungles into their designs. Catering to golf enthusiasts of every level, 9-18-hole courses regularly offer multi-day “stay and play opportunities which vary from modest two-day, two-round packages to grand weeklong stays. Included is airport pick up and drop off, hotel accommodation, local gourmet feasts, sightseeing trips, traditional dance nights, all-you-can golf rounds, and equipment is also included. Within a 10-minute boat ride from the Gili Islands is a newly developed resort rapidly accumulating renown. The Sire Beach Golf Club, formerly known as the Lombok Golf Kosaido Country Club, is the most recent addition to the growing golf opportunities here in Indonesia. This bold, 18hole championship course boasts stellar views of the pristine coastline on holes one to nine and impressive vistas of Mt. Rinjani on holes 10 through 18. Some homestays and resorts on Gili Air work in partnership with the Sire Club to assist in transporting clients from the islands to the golf club and back to the accommodation. This is just one example of countless golf-packages you can find throughout Indonesia. Therefore, as you tour around, be sure to keep your eyes open for the nearest course, and it will be apparent why this country is considered one of the quickest-developing golf capitals in the world!

Running As you tune into the Olympics next summer, keep an eye out for nineteen-year-old Indonesian hero and Lombok native Lalu Muhammud Zohri. The nineteen-year-old made world history last year when he came first in the men’s 100-meter sprint at the 2018 IAAF Under-20 World Championships. His time of 10.18 seconds was a National Junior Record. The victory made Zohri a national sensation, and deservedly so. Out of all the events at the championships, in the competition’s 32year history, Zohri is the first Indonesian person to ever secure an IAAF medal. Part of why Indonesians are so proud of him is due to his humble beginnings. He grew up in a wood and bamboo house in the village of West Pemenang in North Lombok, not far from Bangsal Harbor. The teenager did not have enough money to purchase running shoes and had to borrow 400,000 IDR (about USD 28) to purchase proper footwear. After his breakthrough victory at the 2018 championships, the Indonesian president ordered his home in West Pemenang to be rebuilt. Zohri refused, saying he would rather keep his house in its original condition as a reminder of his roots. Since 2018, he has placed seventh in the 100-meter race at the 2018 Asian Games, first at the Malaysia Open Grand Prix, and second at the 2019 Asian Athletics championships—the list goes on. But the most exciting development of his career since his breakout race happened this May, when he set a personal and national record of 10.03 seconds at the 2019 Seiko Golden Grand Prix, receiving a bronze medal and landing himself a coveted spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Surfing
Gililife 66
Desert Point, on the southwest coast of Lombok, is a legendary household name amongst international professional surfers. Tracks, an Australian surf magazine that calls itself ‘The Surf Bible’, crowned Desert Point, ‘The Best Wave in the World.’ Surfers travel from around the world to Desert Point for its lengthy left-hand reef point break, which can break for up to 300 meters and barrel for up to 20 seconds, making it one of the longest in the world. The waves here are unpredictable and favorable conditions include huge groundswells and low tide. As a result, the famous lefthander is only rideable a few times a year. When conditions are conducive, hundreds of pros camp in shacks along the beach for weeks, waiting for the ultimate surfing photo. A shallow reef and strong outgoing currents make surfing here quite dangerous, and more than a few surfers have suffered serious injuries trying to conquer the wave. Desert Point is not suitable for novices. For intermediate to advanced surfers, there are plenty of waves along the Lombok coastline. Ekas Inside, Secret Surf Spot, Mawi, Mawun Beach, Are Guling Beach, Gerupuk, Tanjung Aan, Seger Reef, and Selong Belanak are popular surf breaks that attract beginner and professional surfers from around the world. As for beginner-friendly spots, Kuta is the most famous and tourist-oriented. Gerepuk and Selong Belanak are perfect for novices and both beaches have plenty of surf camps, which include lessons, equipment, and accommodation. Even Gili Air has been known to present good surf!
Freediving Bodily Awareness, Serenity in Surrendering and Overwhelming Relaxation. These are usually not the words people associate with the “extreme sport” of freediving. Yet if freediving is to be taken seriously, these three concepts must be adopted and practiced. One of the reasons why freediving is so popular on our islands is because the islands give ample opportunity to engage in a relaxed, healthy, and calm way during the time out of the ocean. The passive flow of visitors and locals, dedication of ocean-side spas/restaurants and natural ambiance all around contributes a relaxing environment for us. In the beautiful blue around us, there are plenty of opportunities to take part in various forms of freediving. Enjoy fun reef drop-offs, calm water conditions with stellar visibility and reliable depth. Dives are just a boat ride away, and a consistent 27-29C (81-84F) degree water temperature make this a freediver’s paradise. Whether you come here to find a way to incorporate freediving into your relaxation, or the other way around, the Gili islands serve as an incredible opportunity to develop or continue your freediving career. The most valuable advice is to look for a freedive school to get the information you need to dive safely and responsibly. It is highly recommended for new divers to begin with an introductory course, which you can find on both Gili Air and Trawangan. Rule number one of freediving is to never dive alone! Always dive with someone who has equal to more experience than you. Enjoy!

INTRODUCING
GILI AIR ISLAND PUB
Meet New Friends Over a Cold Beer Mellow tunes drift our way as we approach Gili Air’s local bar Pockets & Pints. It’s late afternoon and there’s a relaxed atmosphere around the bar, with just a few people enjoying a quiet drink and one local watching the IrelandScotland rugby match. Later this evening the bar will become a lively hub of locals and tourists hanging out, meeting new people, and sampling Indonesian beer on tap. Martin, originally from Austria, fell in love with the island life a long time ago and has worked, amongst other things, as a hotel manager on a remote island in Tonga as well as a freediving instructor. For Martin, Gili Air is the perfect balance between the lively urban vibe and secluded island life. At Pockets & Pints, the only pub on the island, he is trying to create a somewhat ‘living room atmosphere’ where everyone can feel welcome
Gililife 70
WHY VISIT POCKETS & PINTS? Connect with new friends at Pockets & Pints any evening, tuck into their deliciously filled oven-baked pitas (think crispy juicy pizza) and take on your friends in a game of darts. Ask Martin about freediving and prepare to fall in love with the ocean.
and mingle. The bar organises a range of activities from the occasional beer pong tournament to the Gili Air Darts League, a spirited evening of competition combining all of the islands communities. Popular sports events, like the Rugby World Cup are screened occasionally. “We’re not a sports pub,” Martin ensures, “but we show the significant events that people care about.” Pockets & Pints is equally famous for its homemade pita bread stuffed with a range of local and imported fillings. You can watch the fresh bread being baked in the large stone pizza oven just as you walk in! Apart from numerous brands of local and international beer, the bar also offers excellent non-vegan/veganfriendly coffees from local cafe B52.
Martin considers the possibility of opening a sister establishment in up and coming South Lombok, “Pockets & Pints is still a child and will only keep growing.” Pockets & Pints recently celebrated its first anniversary
with an impressive party. There was much to celebrate despite less tourists coming to the Gili islands for several months, the bar managed to survive and even flourish because of its popularity among locals.

They also offer daily snorkeling and bike tours around the island. Mad Monkey's Corporate Social Responsibility drive supporting community projects across Southeast Asia and Australia is impressive. As the inhabitants of the islands are making concerted efforts to clean up the islands, guests are invited to join the weekly beach clean-up on Wednesdays.
The resort also hosts charity events to raise money for other non-profit projects. The Mad Monkey brand had its origin in Cambodia and has since expanded throughout Asia and Australia. Mad Monkey decided to launch its first Indonesian hotel

Rosie discovered her passion for Ayurvedic medicine during the years she lived and studied in India. After opening a successful vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Bali, she was inspired to move to Gili Air to follow her dream of creating healthy and soulful food. Since its opening in April of 2018, Nad Brahma has focused on offering more than just delicious traditional Indian dishes. An Ayurvedic Nutrition Course which educates and directs you to your
personal Dosha or body constitution type is offered. In this informative course, attendees receive guidance towards structuring an appropriate diet that may best benefit and balance their lifestyle and health. One can join the Nad Brahma Ayurveda Peeps on their website and receive updates on informative articles about Ayurveda Doshas and useful recipes that complement personal health. Additionally, cooking classes, fruit or vegetable carving courses, and recycling/upcycling workshops are

The restaurant does not use plastic and takes steps to recycle and give back to the community.
