Conservation minded people are heavily invested in programs that help with the upkeep and improvement of the sealife around the islands. In this issue, we focus on some of the initiatives that are being carried out on land. Meet the ‘Brotherhood’, founded in 2018 by two brothers Sulman and Ahadi, who specialize in upcycling and recycling on Gili Meno. The Soraya Foundation, based on Gili Air, is actively involved in educating the children on the islands on personal hygiene and conservation. Suparman, a well-loved gentleman on Gili Trawangan together with the Gili Eco Trust manages Treevolution, a tree-planting initiative that encourages and supports residents and visitors to ‘Plant Oxygen.’ Travelers who enjoy participating in the communities they are visiting will find many projects and programs to join while they are on the Gili Islands. If you are here for a well-deserved break, rest assured you will find everything you need to have a fun, stress-free and memorable stay!

YOU ARE ON THE GILI ISLANDS
CULTURE &HISTORY
The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October.
The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly
different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle on the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions, but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from

a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping, entertainment and activities. Luxury Villas abound and less expensive accommodation is available for the budget traveller. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities.
Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be eyeopening, its not an escape from reality, just a slightly different one, but understandably surreal none the less! There are several conservation organisations based here including Gili Eco Trust, The Gili Shark Foundation, Cats of Gili and Horses of Gili. For getting involved in beach clean ups visit one of the dive centres on the island, make your vacation meaningful by giving back to the island! As you may know - there is no motorized transport on the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. With its largely unspoiled natural environment, vivid, diverse traditional culture and increasing infrastructure, Lombok island is an interesting compromise between touristic Bali and wild Sumbawa. Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.
Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

FREEDIVING A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE
Summertime as a kid meant long days at the pool, which would end when my mom stood up and walked over to us to tell us it was time to go home. Trying to extend the day for just a few more minutes, as soon as I would see my mom coming, I would take one breath and swim underwater to the other side of the pool so that my mom couldn’t talk to me. Little did I know that this was my unofficial introduction into freediving.
I had never tried scuba and definitely had never heard the term freediving before signing up for my first course. But after talking to the instructors of the shop, they had my attention. I’ve said for years that I am terrible at breathing, so I wasn’t sure I would be any good at freediving. What I learned is that it is not so much about how you breathe, but about techniques, you learn to relax your body and mind so that you use less oxygen.
Freediving is a thing that almost everyone does, but you might not be familiar with the term either! Have you gone snorkeling and dived down to the bottom to get a closer look? That is freediving! Have you challenged your friends to see who could hold their breath the longest in the pool? Also freediving! Are you a surfer that goes for the big waves and spends some time underwater after a wipeout? Freediving. Now that I have completed a few freediving courses on Gili Air, I feel like so much more of the ocean is available to me. When I see turtles on a snorkeling trip, I can safely stay underwater for much longer to be able to observe these beautiful neighbors of ours in their home (from a distance of course, don’t stress out the turtles!). If I see something sparkling from the ocean floor, I know how to equalize the pressure in my ears so that they don’t hurt and I can dive down 20+ meters to check if it is lost pirate treasure (no luck so far). Best of all, I have met so many other freedivers just by spending time going out on fun dives and spending time at the shop. Talking to other people that are also in this small, but very international community is so amazing. Listening to other people who have seen whale sharks, mantas, pyrosome, just makes you want to grab your mask and suit, and a buddy (never freedive alone!), and head out to the nearest ocean to explore and just play in nature’s playground. There are plenty of activities on offer for all types of visitors on the Gili Islands and Lombok. Improve your cooking repertoire and learn how to cook delicious Indonesian dishes or for the more artistic, there are jewellery making and art classes! Explore the WWII bunker remnants on Gili Trawangan or ride a horse at sunset. Well equipped gyms can be found around the islands and some nights spots offer salsa and samba classes. WATER SPORTS The Gili Islands and Lombok offer endless possibilities for water lovers besides diving and snorkeling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a glassbottom boat tour to see the
underwater world without venturing into the ocean. Rent a kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a stand-up paddle board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. Lombok has a few nice surf spots which are worth a visit. Please
be aware of currents and tides and surfing experience is advisable. Subwing is the ultimate water sport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while parasailing will take you to new heights and safely land you back in the water! Have fun!

Con seR vat ion Keeping Our Islands Clean & Green The Gili islands are Indonesia’s slice of paradise with pristine beaches, healthy coral, world class diving, and vibrant nightlife. There is something for every type of visitor, but like most small islands with high levels of tourism, the Gilis struggle with waste management. That’s why across the three islands, many locals have come together to tackle this problem with an array of different initiatives and solutions. With multiple beach clean-up events and recycling workshops held weekly, locals are working hard towards making their home environment sustainable. Efforts go beyond just cleaning up, others are creating nurseries to grow trees which are then replanted all across the island.
This not only helps to create a lush and green environment, but also helps to regulate high ground temperatures. Others have found a way to repurpose waste materials to create something new and even hold donation-based workshops to teach visitors to do the same. On all three islands, great emphasis is put on educating children about pollution and the effects on the environment. Many organizations work closely with local schools to help get the children involved either through clean ups, recycling incentives, or volunteering. The aim is to set a good foundation for the children so that the younger generations can understand the importance of sustainability not only for their island, but for the planet as a whole. 59 Gililife

n o i t u l o v e Tre Planting Oxygen Pak Suparman, who had only just settled on Gili Trawangan prior to the 2018 earthquakes, fell in love with the island and chose to stay and help his new home. A Gili Trawangan resident, who owns a pizza restaurant and homestay, had the vision of creating a greener island. Over time his property evolved into a modest nursery filled with budding plants and trees. Co-incidentally, Gili Eco Trust was conducting weekly environmental lessons for teaching children how to care for the planet through beach clean-ups and recycling workshops next door to the Pizzeria. The two environmentalists decided to join forces and created the Treevolution Project. The children were enlisted to help plant over 7,000 seedlings which, once matured, were to be replanted across the island.

The Treevolution project on Gili Trawangan aims to boost the area’s native ecosystem. This is accomplished by planting two types of evergreens. The Trembasi tree and the magnificent red-flowered Flamboyan tree planted both provide shade and oxygen. Introducing more trees on the island not only create oxygen and shade, thereby reducing the ground temperature, but strong roots reduce flooding which in turn reduces soil surface runoff into the ocean. Nearly 100 volunteers from around the world and residents planted close to 350 trees. Local businesses donated the funds, tools for planting trees, Treevolution T-shirts and Suparman provided a generous and delicious lunch for the volunteers. The project concluded with a fundraising party held at Suparmans Pizza. The fun event raised funds for Maxi-Grow soil needed for the nursery, para-net to make shade for the new nursery, seeds and fence repairs. In upcoming projects, Treevolution aims to plant fruitbearing trees along with the other decorative trees. Club Harapan Conservation Classes It is a known fact that children are the future and education is a key factor to their development. In 2017 the Gili Shark Conservation project started an initiative with the mission to give the gift of conservation-based education to the next generation. Every Saturday morning a team of local teachers meet with over one hundred children from Gili Air to teach a conservation class called, Club Harapan, which means, Club Hope. This class is designed to educate and inspire children about nature, the environment and how to protect our planet for the future. Children are born curious. They are interested and excited to know about the natural world and what happens in it. The hope is that by educating children about the importance of environmental conservation it will help ensure the long-term health of our planet for generations to come. Written by: Zara Ellis

D O O H R E H T BRO Upcycling Projects
Brotherhood, founded in 2018 by two brothers Sulman and Hadi, is an on-going project aimed at upcycling and recycling. The original aim was to build a reggae bar entirely from recycled products as a means to teach locals how to make use of waste instead of throwing unwanted items in the trash. All furniture in Brotherhood has either been donated by hotels or has been upcycled. The most recent project was the upcycling of sleek bar stools with metal rebar taken from houses that were destroyed in the earthquake two years ago. Brotherhood has donation-based daily workshops, from 9 am - 5 pm, where visitors can make and design their own drinking glass, produce bamboo straws or create jewellery from single-use plastics. Perhaps the Gililife 62
most impressive TK is Brotherhood’s glass crushing machine, which is used to crush the entire islands’ glass - all hotels and restaurants bring their used glass to the property. Many of the glass bottles will have a drinking glass cut out of them by visitors in the workshops. The remains of the bottle will be crushed into a fine powder, which will then be added to cement to create tiles, used to build local swimming pools. Every Sunday Brotherhood organizes a Clean-Up of Gili Meno. Currently the Brotherhood project has no support from the government and survives through hard work, creativity and donations. Soraya Foundation BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSH WORKSHOP Many youngsters on Gili Air Island are in need of education about personal hygiene. Especially when it comes to dental care. Many children do not understand the importance of hygiene. At the same time, the Soraya Foundation is acutely aware of plastic toothbrushes being a huge problem for the environment so they decided to focus on both challenges at once. The Soraya Foundation together with the Daur Project
team, recycle hard plastic into new products. Their wish was to show the young children how to brush their teeth correctly, while making them aware that bamboo is a better option for the environment. They supplied each child with a bamboo toothbrush to make less use of single-use plastic, and then gave them a detailed explanation on how to brush their teeth correctly. For several years, the founders of Pituq Co. have been raising funds to support underprivileged people by donating much-needed supplies such as fresh water, sanitary items and learning aids for children. Astini, originally from West Lombok is a spa therapist based in Gili Air working at Jasmine Spa. Prior to discovering the Gili islands. Astini owned her own spa in Lombok and has become an informal teacher to those who are wanting to get into the industry. Astini is a mother and since her divorce she describes herself as the ‘backbone’ of her family. She is passionate about providing home cooked meals for her children. She has no plans for the future and is happy with the place she is in. She hopes to collaborate with a business one day. Astini, berasal dari Lombok Barat,dia adalah seorang spa terapis yang berbasis di Gili Air yang bekerja di Jasmine Spa. Sebelum menetap di Gili. Astini memiliki spa sendiri di Lombok dan menjadi guru terapis informal bagi mereka yang ingin masuk dan belajar di bidang salon dan spa. Astini adalah seorang ibu dari beberapa anaknya dan sejak perceraiannya dia menggambarkan dirinya sebagai 'tulang punggung' keluarganya. Dia dengan senang hati menyediakan makanan yang dimasak di rumah untuk anak-anaknya. Dia tidak punya rencana untuk kedepannya dan dia hanya menikmati pekerjaanya saat ini. Namun dia berharap untuk bekerjasama dengan para investor suatu hari nanti.

USMAN Assistant Manager Meno House Villa, Gili Meno
Usman, originally from North Lombok first moved to Gili Meno in 2018 and is currently working at Meno House Villa as the Assistant Manager in the restaurant. Prior to living in Gili Meno he had been working in Trawangan, Gili Gede and Sumatra where he owned his own business. Usman is a family man who comes from a farming family, however, he decided to change his path by escaping farm life and working in the tourism industry. Usman dreams of owning his own restaurant one day. Dia berasal dari Lombok Utara pertama kali pindah ke Gili Meno pada tahun 2018 dan saat ini bekerja di Meno House Villa sebagai Asisten Manajer di restoran. Sebelum tinggal di Gili Meno dia peenah bekerja di Trawangan, Gili Gede dan Sumatra tempat dia memilikinya usaha sendiri. Namun, Usman adalah pria yang berasal dari keluarga petani memutuskan untuk mengubah jalannya dengan keluar dari kehidupan pertanian dan bekerja di industri pariwisata. Usman bercita-cita memiliki restoran sendiri suatu hari nanti.

TRIGGERFISH Triggerfish (lat. Balistidae) are notoriously often the center of exciting stories told by scuba divers. Their reputation for chasing divers (and occasionally snorkelers) is fair but what more should you know about them?
strong teeth can open practically everything, from sea urchins to crustaceans and mollusc shells. The smaller, shy Redtooth Triggerfish stays in large shoals, either beneath the surface or around the reef, filtering the water for plankton and invertebrates.
Only some males of more than 40 species worldwide protect their nest by aggressive behavior. The mechanism of lifting up one spine of their first dorsal fin resembles that of a firearm ‘trigger’. Once up, they indiscreetly tell you to stay away. If they do come after you, present them your fins, stay at your current depth and calmly swim away.
As different as they can be, they all swim using their dorsal and anal fins in wave like motion. The tail fin is used only for quick dashes. Triggerfish come in many more colors and sizes but the fin movement alone is a perfect reason to get into the water and enjoy this beautiful species.
Most triggerfish spend their days roaming alone, like the large and common Titan Triggerfish. Their

INGREDIENTS - Tuna 150g tuna 1 tbsp sesame seeds mix 2 tsp Dijon mustard salt & black pepper - Pickled Cucumber Salad 50g cucumber 10g daikon 1/3 tbsp rice vinegar 1/2 tbsp sugar 1/2 tbsp water
THIS WEEKS DELICIOUS RECIPE:
Sesame crusted
Tuna Tataki with Pickled Cucumber Salad and Wasabi Mayo
- Wasabi Mayo 20g mayonnaise 2g wasabi paste - Garnish microgreens nori powder
PREPARATION 1. Combine vinegar, water, sugar, salt and in a medium and bring to a boil over high heat.
7. In a medium frying pan over medium-high heat, warm the oil until just smoking.
2. Remove from heat, cool down and add cucumber, daikon cubes and stir.
8. Fry tuna steaks in the pan and cook until the sesame seeds start to turn golden underneath about 1 minute.
3. Let rest 10 minutes then transfer cucumber to sealable container and refrigerate until ready to use.
9. Turn the tuna over and cook for 1 minute.
4. Mix the wasabi paste together with mayonnaise.
10. Sear edges of tuna for 15 seconds on each edge.
5. Place sesame seeds on a plate. Pat dry tuna steaks with a paper towel to remove excess water.
1 1. Transfer tuna to a cutting board and cut 1/4-inch thick slices and season with salt and pepper.
6. Brush with Dijon mustard and press tuna in sesame seeds, coating the tuna evenly.
1 2. Arrange tuna on individual serving plate. Serve with pickled cucumber salad, wasabi mayonnaise and garnish with micro greens and nori powder.
