The ferry departs regularly from Padang Bai in Bali, with the first ferry departing at 8am and arrives at the port of Lembar in Lombok. From Lembar take a taxi or shuttle to get to Bangsal port. The ferry crossing takes approximately 5-8hr, and 2hr for the taxi or shuttle from Lembar to Bangsal.

YOU ARE ON THE GILI ISLANDS
CULTURE &HISTORY
The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May
to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals
speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle on the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions, but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in. 21 Gililife

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from

a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping, entertainment and activities. Luxury Villas abound and less expensive accommodation is available for the budget traveller. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities.
Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be eyeopening, its not an escape from reality, just a slightly different one, but understandably surreal none the less! There are several conservation organisations based here including Gili Eco Trust, The Gili Shark Foundation, Cats of Gili and Horses of Gili. For getting involved in beach clean ups visit one of the dive centres on the island, make your vacation meaningful by giving back to the island! As you may know - there is no motorized transport on the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. With its largely unspoiled natural environment, vivid, diverse traditional culture and increasing infrastructure, Lombok island is an interesting compromise between touristic Bali and wild Sumbawa. In the South, world-class surf breaks, a multitude of pristine beaches and gentle hills are an open invitation to explore the surroundings at one’s pace and enjoy the tropical vibe. The East offers a complete different scenery; from waterfalls, rainforests and hills carpeted with rice paddies, the surroundings of Mount Rinjani provide a myriad of hike options, from easy walks to very challenging treks in a beautiful panoramic landscape. In the South-West, facing Lembar harbour and Sekotong, are the less known Gilis (meaning “small island”), where snorkelling in the lively reef and chilling on the empty beaches are the few tourists’ main activity. SCUBA DIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. colourful fish schools! Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a sought-after destination for muck diving. There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax�, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.
Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

Seahorse Seahorses are the romantics of the underwater world. Monogamous couples mate under the light of the full moon and while mating they sing and perform an elaborate dance. Their singing sounds similar to smacking lips and the nurturing ritual continues on until the male gives birth. In a procreational twist, the males of the species bear the babies! The female visits the male every morning to check if he is still alive and before they separate for the day, they perform a unique dance where they pirouette and promenade and entwine their prehensile tails in a loving embrace. This dance ritual reinforces their bond and prepares and synchronizes their bodies for gestation and birth. Seahorses, of the genus Hippocampus, do not have

teeth or stomachs. This means they have to eat consistently throughout the day and if they don’t eat for around thirty minutes, they could possibly die. The vulnerable seahorse often dies of overexertion when they are subjected to strong currents, so they prefer to lock themselves onto sea grasses or corals. To swim, they have to flap their tiny fins up to thirtyfive times a second and as the slowest underwater animal, they move at a pace of only 1.5m per hour. Seahorses are unfortunately harvested for aquariums and traditional medicines. This diminutive creature is at serious risk of extinction. Fortunately, the Gilis are host to four different kinds of seahorses!

FREEDIVING A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE
Summertime as a kid meant long days at the pool, which would end when my mom stood up and walked over to us to tell us it was time to go home. Trying to extend the day for just a few more minutes, as soon as I would see my mom coming, I would take one breath and swim underwater to the other side of the pool so that my mom couldn’t talk to me. Little did I know that this was my unofficial introduction into freediving.
I had never tried scuba and definitely had never heard the term freediving before signing up for my first course. But after talking to the instructors of the shop, they had my attention. I’ve said for years that I am terrible at breathing, so I wasn’t sure I would be any good at freediving. What I learned is that it is not so much about how you breathe, but about techniques, you learn to relax your body and mind so that you use less oxygen.
Freediving is a thing that almost everyone does, but you might not be familiar with the term either! Have you gone snorkeling and dived down to the bottom to get a closer look? That is freediving! Have you challenged your friends to see who could hold their breath the longest in the pool? Also freediving! Are you a surfer that goes for the big waves and spends some time underwater after a wipeout? Freediving. Now that I have completed a few freediving courses on Gili Air, I feel like so much more of the ocean is available to me. When I see turtles on a snorkeling trip, I can safely stay underwater for much longer to be able to observe these beautiful neighbors of ours in their home (from a distance of course, don’t stress out the turtles!). If I see something sparkling from the ocean floor, I know how to equalize the pressure in my ears so that they don’t hurt and I can dive down 20+ meters to check if it is lost pirate treasure (no luck so far). Best of all, I have met so many other freedivers just by spending time going out on fun dives and spending time at the shop. Talking to other people that are also in this small, but very international community is so amazing. Listening to other people who have seen whale sharks, mantas, pyrosome, just makes you want to grab your mask and suit, and a buddy (never freedive alone!), and head out to the nearest ocean to explore and just play in nature’s playground. If you haven’t tried freediving yet, then make the most of your time here in the Gilis and sign up for a course. You will learn more about your body, about your mind, and then apply those things while you freedive and learn more about the ocean. It is an experience that can’t be compared to anything else. We are happy to announce our new partnership with Petit Futé the largest French travel guide company in the world. Petit Futé was established 43 years ago in 1976 when two students from a business school in Toulouse set out to publish a small guidebook on the city of Nancy. Since then, Petit Futé has grown into an extensive series of French guidebooks with a focus on sharing unique attractions, local favourites and things off the beaten tourist track. Guidebook attractions are selected with great care. The first step is extensive research on an area and then noting down potential places and attractions. Half of the
guidebook team’s time is spent on this stage. Secondly, a Petit Futé team member representative visits each to collect further information and gauge whether they are worthy of the guidebook. Finally, the chosen attractions are compiled into a guidebook. Today, Petit Futé publishes 550 different editions each year. In 2018 they sold a huge 8.5 million guidebooks while their website attracted 48 million visitors. Petit Futé currently publishes two books on Indonesia – one specifically for the Bali / Lombok area and the other for the entirety of Indonesia. These are re-reviewed and updated each year to ensure that the books
only showcase the best each place has to offer. Petit Futé has a particular interest in promoting the Gili Islands due to much misinformation about the extent of damage since the 2018 earthquake and are actively promoting the Gilis to French-speaking countries. If you’re a non-French speaker but would love to check out what Petit Futé have to offer we have good news. Petit Futé has plans to gradually translate their website into a multi lingual website in the coming years. This means more of the world will have access to their unique suggestions and be able to build better trips.

STEFAN BULAN MADU Stefan grew up in Munich and dreamed of experiencing his own ‘Robinson Crusoe’ adventure and discovering an untouched island to call home. He never imagined discovering it on Gili Air. An actor in the 1960s, Stefan starred in well-known German films and Bonanza, a Hollywood Western series. Growing tired of the Hollywood lifestyle, he went exploring and in the 1980s while on a sailing trip, he had his first glimpse of Gili Air. Untouched by tourism and home to fishermen and sweet potato farmers, Stefan, instantly fell in love with the island. Stefan purchased land and settled down. In 2000, he built five luxury villas and christened the establishment of Bulan Madu (meaning Honeymoon). Over time he added on the island’s largest spa and the Dragon Bar and Restaurant. He particularly loves the island atmosphere and is happy there is no snow! He admits he gets a little “lost in time”, forgetting dates, but who can blame him for losing track while living in paradise?

MARTIN POCKETS & PINTS Martin, Austrian-born with an impressive career in tourism and hospitality established his expatfriendly pub, called Pockets and Pints on Gili Air last September. With a notable history of hospitality management in Europe and Polynesia, Martin decided to create his own concept restaurant. The fare is simple and delicious. A variety of stuffed pita breads and imported beers are highlights on the menu. Pockets and Pints attract visitors from around the world and has become a popular meeting place for expats and travellers. As an ex Freedive Instructor, Martin describes the sport as a silent environment where divers are at one with their surrounds. Martin muses, “I am from a landlocked country and it was a lifelong dream to live near the beach. I was enticed to Gili Air for the diving and would love to travel more, but for now I am content serving beers and running the islands darts league.”
ELMA AND KOMENG DJAMEZZ LUMBUNG Elma initially met Komeng when strolling the beach during a brief holiday on Gili Air in 2012. For Komeng, it was love at first sight. They began talking daily once she returned home to the Netherlands and they visited each other as often as possible. Together they purchased a piece of land on Gili Air “for the future” with no concrete plans. 2015 was a year of changes for Elma and she found herself ready for a new life. Instead of staying in the Netherlands, Elma decided to move to Gili Air to be with Komeng. In just three months they established Djamezz Lumbung with three beautiful lumbung style villas, a pool and garden areas. Today, Elma, Komeng and their friendly cats live onsite to take care of their guests. Elma loves her life on Gili Air thanks to the community spirit and chance to meet so many new friends from around the world.

Livia SEA LA VIE Livia, Polish-born and struck by the travel bug found herself traveling to the opposite side of the world. It was in New Zealand where she met James, her husband and father of their two children. She joined him as he pursued a job opportunity on Gili Meno as a Dive Instructor. They adored the safe, peaceful community on Meno, so they decided to plant roots and raise their children close to nature. Soon, the couple felt it was time to take the chance to stop working for someone else and invest in their own business ideas. They bought land and built Sea La Vie - two beautiful villas offering travelers a comfortable, relaxing spot to enjoy their holiday. The couple live busy but fulfilling lives by the beach. Livia enjoys running the villas and appreciates the time spent with her children, and James is working diligently in the newly opened dive center called, Meno Dive Club.
HANNAH BREATHE VILLA Hannah, originally from the UK used to live a seasonal life in France – snowboarding in the winter and surfing in the summer. A few years ago she was traveling around the Gilis on her own, whilst waiting for her husband to join her from Tahiti, and the trip changed their destiny. After a trip to the Philippines, where she reunited with her husband, they received an offer to manage a dive club on Meno. One thing led to another and soon they invested in land and built their own business called Breathe Villa. They wanted to create a green and flowery oasis where guests could enjoy peace and privacy while still being only minutes from the beach. Hannah is also a certified yoga teacher and offers classes to her guests. The couple love the natural environment and underwater activities around Gili Meno and it shows in their mutual passion for the island.

SYLVIE Kampung Bungalows Sylvie, originally from France but living in Australia is now enjoying her new life on Gili Meno in the midst of her own childhood dream come true. She had always wanted to live on a tropical island and first came to Indonesia thirty-seven years ago on vacation. Gili Meno was exactly the island Sylvie pictured in her dreams – a peaceful place to get back to the basics with beautiful white-sandy beaches. She visited the island numerous times from Australia over a two-year period, and then woke up one day and decided, “I have to do it now otherwise I’ll never do it.” Sylvie secured land and seven years ago built Kampung Bungalows (which means “village” in Bahasa Indonesia). She genuinely loves the easy-going vibes of the island life and the happy atmosphere around the smiling faces of people who visit her own little community on holiday.
CLAUDIA MENO MANIA Claudia decided to make a move from her home in Australia in 2015 to live a calmer lifestyle. She’d spent some time in Ubud, and heard about a small, quiet, lesser developed island named Gili Meno and because she loved the ocean, decided to investigate. As she dragged her suitcase from the harbour to her hotel on the beach - she already decided that Gili Meno was the place for her. Claudia began by renting out one bungalow to fellow travellers. This grew organically and led her and her partner Made to purchase land in 2017 and create Meno Madia – simple yet comfortable bungalowstyle villas offering tranquillity and a change of pace from the western world. Claudia’s favourite part of her new business and easy-going lifestyle is the connections she makes with other travellers. She enjoys watching people slow down, connect with nature and enjoy the island life.

ANNA BIG BUBBLE Anna’s Gili adventure began in 1999 when her friend first shared stories of the remarkable diving off the coast of Gili Trawangan. The shop Anna chose to dive with was understaffed and offered her a place on the team. After the Bali bombing, tourism reduced, and she was forced to find another job. She joined the Big Bubble team for a year until the owner decided to sell. Anna jumped at the chance and purchased Big Bubble alongside her friend as the only femaleowned and operated dive centres in the Gilis. They established their reputation as a friendly centre where staff know your name and treat you like family. Anna founded Gili Eco Trust to tackle destructive fishing practices and later Gili Indah Dive Alliance to bring together dive centres on Gili Trawangan. Today she still loves and lives on Gili Trawangan with her daughter Marli and personally runs Big Bubble.

SETH TÍR NA NOG After nearly 10 years as the lead singer of a band touring across America, Seth left a life of rock and roll to travel indefinitely. His travels led him to over 20 countries around the world including Indonesia. On an impulse, he bought a boat ticket to the Gili Islands and what an excellent decision it was! As soon as his feet touched the sand, he knew he was home. “It was love at first sight,” he recalls and that was over seven years ago. Seth achieved his dream life and dream job as part-owner of Gili Trawangans only Irish Bar, Tír na nÓg which is also a popular music venue and sports bar. He performs with his band Lima Bintang around the island, and you can even catch him playing between sporting events at Tír na nóg.

JESSICA BAMBA, KUTA LOMBOK Lombok Island was not much more than a spot on a map in Jessica’s mind prior to her spontaneous decision to tag along on her cousin’s surf holiday in 2009. Almost a decade later, she now calls this island home. Jessica, a Swedish-Italian, first fell in love with the easy-going island vibes and then with a kind man who is
now her husband and father of her five-year-old daughter. Like many of us secretly do, she used to suffer from social media envy following other people’s travels, and now she is living her own tropical dream life. She realized her passion for leadership after working in property management on the island and then earned the position of Manager of Bamba in Kuta Beach. Radiating a welcoming vibe for both locals and visitors, Ashtari is a restaurant, lounge, and yoga loft perched on top of a hill with a gorgeous view over the southern coast of Lombok. Between management of the day to day as well as assisting in the kitchen and even teaching yoga when the time calls for it, JeanMarc is genuinely involved in the success of the business. He expressed the authentic social experience is his favorite part about his journey with the business, as throughout his years at Ashtari he has immersed himself in the local community and operated his business as a catalyst in supporting education and making a positive social impact.
BLUE MARLIN DIVE Marie, originally from France and Shannon, Zimbabwe born were magnetically drawn to Indonesia by the world-class diving. The two passionate Scuba Diving Instructors first found themselves on Komodo island exploring the stunning underwater world before an opportunity presented itself with Blue Marlin Dive to expand into Kuta Lombok. Their enthusiasm for marine life and adventure led them to explore fascinating unchartered dive spots along the coast of Lombok, which are now on the map for other scuba divers seeking something unique to island reef dives. carried out by Anne herself and she ensures all staff possesses accurate knowledge and skill before being allowed to work with clients. We had a dream of establishing this business just after the earthquake and with hope and hard work we established ‘Gempita’ (Gempa means earthquake in Bahasa Indonesia). After the earthquake, I was inspired to learn how to make gelato. All we have now is the result of muchappreciated help from friends and relatives. When the earthquake happened, I was in my late pregnancy and gave birth at a refugee camp in Mataram. I was fortunate to have the assistance of my dear friends. We named our daughter, Elisya Gempita Ardelia, to remind us of the unforgettable earthquake on August 5, 2018. Hence the name of the business, ‘Gempita Gelato’. Gililife 84

Sanur Village Festival A team of volunteers attended the Sanur Village Festival on August 21st - 25th, 2019 on Matahari Terbut Beach in Sanur. The Sanur Village Festival is now included in Indonesia’s Top Eight tourism events. In its 14th year, Sanur Village Festival featured the theme Dharmaning Gesing – the glorifying of bamboo, which reflects the Balinese appreciation of bamboo’s role in daily life. It is used in religious ceremonies and an important element in building architecture, so the festival explores bamboo as part of Sanur's community spirit of creativity. The awareness of its existence is hoped to encourage togetherness and a sense of family, respect, protecting the environment and inspiring community creativity. Jack Fruit Jackfruit is believed to have had its origin in Western India and is popular around the world. The enormous fruit can weigh up to fifty kilograms and can be eaten both ripe and unripe. When ripe, it can be eaten raw as a fruit or as an ingredient in cakes and desserts. 20gm Cumin 5gm Salt 5gm Pepper 5gm Cinnamon Stick 2 tbsp Curry Paste 1 liter Coconut Milk
Try one of Tir Na Nรณg Irish Bar's most popular Indonesian dishes. Not only is it rich and full of flavour, it is completely vegan!
PREPARATION First boil the jackfruit for 20 minutes until it becomes soft and can be easily separated, then strain and discard the water. Next create the wonderful Indian inspired curry sauce by mixing all the herbs and other ingredients with 1 liter of coconut milk and a small amount of water. Add the jackfruit and simmer to infuse all flavours. Keep on a low heat until the sauce thickens and add more Salt to taste.
Serving suggestion Tir Na Nรณg serves this dish with veggie balls made from a mixture of tofu, carrots, beans and water, accompanied by white rice and some beautiful frangipani flowers to really give an Indonesian feel to the dish. 99 Gililife
