EDITO ISSUE No. 36 FEBRUARY 2017 According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the year of the Rooster started on 28 January. In Chinese culture, this sign represent courage, talent and confidence and people born under this sign are believed to enjoy natural conversations and social situations. Chinese astrologists predict this year will bring in many moments in which we will be led by instinct and decide to do something just because it feels right. At the same time, apparently we will be blessed by a high dose of courage and will feel happiest when surrounded by people. For this issue, Gili Life has reviewed some of the properties across the Gili islands where to best unwind your “rooster” qualities. Follow your instinct and dare to venture off to different holiday experiences, in contact with the outdoors and surrounded by like-minded people. Be brave and social, be a Rooster!

THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 20

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveler to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 22

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumored growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travelers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkeling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 23 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island Gililife 24

where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the

GILI MENO

true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apano problem!!

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 26

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. FREEDIVING

ACTIVITIES Gililife 32

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

33 Gililife

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 34

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 36

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewelery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

CAPTAIN COCONUTS MEET, EAT, SLEEP, REPEAT GILI AIR

As children, we were probably warned against talking to strangers, especially if on our own, for fear we would get in trouble. When we started travelling, we soon learnt that the opposite approach was in many cases the best one, because it opened doors to new cultures, new encounters and eventually lasting friendships. In fact, making friends while travelling can form durable partnerships, simply because exploring new places together, sharing the same odd situations, eating at the same table (or on the same mat!) and engaging in endless late night conversations out of our daily routine reveals our best and worst sides, naturally connecting likeminded people. While meeting new people is inevitable and extraordinary,

when travelling sometimes the need for proper food becomes a necessity. Typically, the longing for home starts from the stomach, which is soon upset by daring food tastings and, if we want the trip to last longer, we are forced to renounce to many street food temptations. Are you eager to meet travel mates with whom sharing experiences and healthy meals? Are you avoiding backpacker hostels fearing you will be surrounded by loud people drinking beer and eating junk food? Captain Coconuts in Gili Air is the solution to your traveller's issues. A peaceful place where to meet&interact, eat healthy, sleep comfortable in a diverse architectural environment and feel at home. 45 Gililife

GILI ZOOM

Meet & Sleep Captain Coconuts in Gili Air is the brainchild of former Sydney-based architect Resa and his wife Belinda. The couple managed to translate their eye for interior design, passion for travelling, curiosity for new encounters and interest in healthy eating habits in this special place located on Gili Air sunset side. While Resa's professional expertise was essential to design a space with a natural look and plenty of opportunities to interact, Belinda's experience in vegan&vegetarian cuisine was an asset for the success of the healthy café. Gililife 46

The feeling of being in a cradle is not enough to describe the unique experience of sleeping in a swinging bed with a view on the jungle and the nose caressed by the wind. Inspired by Hammock Houses in South America, the Bamboo Lodge is a non-enclosed environment with a unique bamboo design composed of two main rooms featuring 9 swinging beds. It offers a basic yet very comfortable accommodation option that caters for those who are more afraid of walls than of meeting strangers!

Downstairs, spacious private rooms facing the pool recall Java's traditional architecture and decorations, giving them a stylish distinct look. “We travelled a lot and we wanted reflect the best we experienced around the world, creating a space that encourages meeting new people.” Resa said as we walk around the property. “This is not a hostel, not a restaurant, not a resort. This is a place where travellers interact, feel at home and become part of the family”.

Eat & Enjoy From the design, featuring long benches where to eat side by side with other guests, to the diverse menu, serving the best healthy choices of worldwide cuisine, Captain Coconuts offers a culinary experience out of the ordinary. All meals are made from scratch and from fresh ingredients, some of which are sourced from the property's vegetable garden; refined sugar is replaced by honey and dates and even coconut and cashew milk are made on site with locally

sourced produce. Open from early morning to late afternoon, Captain Coconuts is perfect for brunches and lazy days by the pool. Try the Golden Latte, a magic blend made of turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla seeds, honey and cashew milk, savour the Buddha Bowl, a nutricious whole food meal for lunch and indulge in a dairy free raw cheese cake for dessert. Don't worry, no preservatives or artificial flavouring are used!

PONDOK SANTI ESTATE SPACE, FREEDOM, SUSTAINABLE LIVING & CLASS! GILI TRAWANGAN

“Anyone who has done a Bungy Jump knows it takes a hell of a long time to wipe the smile away and it can be a life-changing, positive experience. AJ Hackett, the New Zealander who commercialised Bungy jumping, wrote in in his autobiography. Psychologists say that a positive perception of risks is beneficial, because it allows you to become more comfortable in handling fear, namely the reaction to adrenaline in situations of potential danger. They claim that this attitude eventually helps us make improved decisions into other areas in our lives and that, after fearful experiences, people are likely to become more openminded and spiritual, closer to the quest for the meaning of life.

The same guy who describes himself as an adrenaline junkie and who did the legendary Bungy Jump from the Eiffel Tower in 1987 is the entrepreneur behind Pondok Santi, an estate spread out on over 8 hectares on the beautiful island of Gili Trawangan. AJ Hackett fell in love with the location and decided to convert it to a private residence, where to hide every now and then from his hectic life as “Mister Bungy”. Obviously, the temptation to experiment on a new location was too strong and Pondok Santi soon became the testing ground for sustainable property design, open to worldwide lovers of high-end relaxing green holidays. Today, Pondok Santi is an eco-friendly unique resort, where AJ Hackett and his team translated their vision of the ideal chill out and brainstorm place, spacious, sustainable, exclusive, yet laid-back. 49 Gililife

GILI ZOOM

Green commitment In spite of Pondok Santi's owners professional background and love for risk, there is no need to engage in extreme sports during your stay, quite the opposite. Pondok Santi is designed to offer the best of a relaxing holiday away from the hustle and bustle of your life back home, but also from lively Gili Trawangan's nightlife and crowded beaches. Built on an ancient coconut plantation, Pondok Santi retains much of its original charm, when it was a locally run property with a few simple wooden bungalows spread across

Gililife 50

the green flat field. In constant development, the resort now offers different accommodation options, all developed around the concept of space and sustainable design. The interest in keeping the property green and natural encouraged the management team to focus all developments towards a fully green self-sufficient resort. For this reason, a tree is replanted for every tree removed and no buildings constructed on the beach, which has been refilled with the land dug out from the construction works. A 17 chambers desalination plant

ensures full irrigation of the garden, and a recycling centre guarantees most trash is sorted on-site, reducing the impact of the property on the overloaded island's waste management system. Under way is a plant nursery and a small farm, which will supply the restaurant and guests at the upcoming cooking school. All this, without renouncing to any amenity for a pleasant luxury stay, sure to be cared for by a tight team of long-term staff pleased to assist you at any time.

Indulge in style Being AJ Hackett a wine connaisseur and a sea-lover himself, Pondok Santi could not, not feature a fully stocked bar and a comfortable classy boat. The restaurant serves a diverse fusion food menu, and offers a quiet high-class experience a few minutes away from Gili T Central. The team's passion for mixology comes out at the bar, where a wide selection of import spirits and wines are served all day long. Try the chili infused tequila or

the lemongrass infused gin to add a pungent taste to your usual cocktail! Another gem of the property is Princess Margaux, a 25m traditional outrigger boat stylishly built from the ground up. Once reserved to special guests, the boat is now available for private charters and tours around the Gilis. Needless to say, beholding the sunset from the middle of the sea is a great way to experience beautiful Gili islands' coastline.

BLUE MARLIN DIVE EXPLORE YOUR LIMITS 3 GILIS, KOMODO & LOMBOK Have you ever dreamt of exploring hidden wrecks and vast caves? Are you interested in visiting places seen by a select few and bearing witness to the ocean’s seldom-seen marine creatures? Not everyone has the means to board the Deepsea Challenger with James Cameron, but training in Technical Diving can open up the ocean’s unexplored secrets and allow you to push your personal limits. Even though technical diving is widely known for deeper dives, advanced equipment and the use of different breathing gases, a technical dive is actually defined by a diver’s inability to safely ascend directly to the surface due to mandatory decompression stops or overhead environments. Penetrating a wreck or cave, diving past 40 metres or even just staying past recreational dive tables’ allotted no-decompression times at any

depth are all examples of technical diving. However, pushing these recreational limits confronts divers with greater and more numerous potential dangers. Because of this, strict safety procedures and additional skills must be developed through specialised training. In addition to learning about specialised techniques and unveiling the wonders of the underwater world, technical divers also embark on an inner journey by developing problem-solving skills, learning how to react calmly in cases of stress and emergency and discovering personal limits, strengths and resolve. Where to start? Train with Blue Marlin Dive, Gilis’ original dive centre and Indonesia's leading technical diving facility. Enjoy learning from World Record holders and become part of a tightknit family of deep sea lovers! 57 Gililife

GILI ZOOM

The technical guys Everybody in the Gilis knows or has heard of Simon from Blue Marlin Dive. He’s the charismatic guy who, more than twenty-five years ago, set up a shack on the beach and taught locals how to dive in exchange for lessons in Bahasa Indonesian. It wasn’t long before he made the Gilis his home. Although Simon now splits his time between the Gilis and England, he still dives regularly and his legacy is stronger than ever. That shack on the beach is now a PADI 5* IDC Dive Resort and the Blue Marlin Dive of today includes two liveaboards as well as dive resorts spanning each Gili, Komodo and Lombok. A new 25 room resort opened recently, injecting fresh energy into the original Blue Marlin Dive on Gili Trawangan. Offering recreational and technical courses Gililife 58

from beginner to instructor, Blue Marlin Dive holds numerous awards for being an outstanding company for diver training in Indonesia. Blue Marlin Dive also hosts Gilis’ largest and most equipped technical dive store where divers can find anything from BCD’s, wings and harnesses to regulators, wetsuits and dive computers. Blue Marlin Dive is also a founding member of GIDA, Gili Islands Divers' Association, a nonprofit organisation and network of dive shops that promotes high safety standards and environmentally aware practices for diving in the Gilis. Blue Marlin Dive Gili Trawangan still knows how to have fun with its famous Monday Night Party: another of Simon's legacies and a meeting point for expats and tourists for almost 20 years!

World records Blue Marlin Dive adds to its reputation as a pioneer in the industry by being a family of World Record holders. The owner, Simon Liddiard, achieved the World Record for deepest solo trimix dive on a rebreather in 2002 by diving to 150 metres and senior technical instructor, Will Goodman, has broken 4 World Records in less than 10 years. In 2005, he began his World Record career by being the first person to spend 24

hours underwater. He went on to best himself with a second dive in 2008 where he spent 33 hours and 24 minutes underwater and again in 2010 with an incredible underwater time of 48 hours, 9 minutes and 17 second underwater using a combination of open and closed circuit systems. In March 2014, Will added to his achievements by completing the world’s deepest rebreather dive, reaching 290+ metres of depth.

THE WATERFRONT THAI FOOD BY THE BEACH GILI AIR

Considered one of the healthiest and most loved cuisines in the world, Thai cuisine is a combination of Eastern and Western flavours which blends different culinary influences with fresh spices and local produce. Thai food is typically made from scratch, making wide use of fresh herbs and ground spices, most of which have amazing immune system boosting properties. While garlic reduces cholesterol and is a natural antibiotic, chilli protects the heart and cumin can help treat respiratory and skin disorders. Ginger and turmeric are great natural remedies against flu and inflammations, lemongrass has anti-fungal properties and coriander is high in vitamines and a natural anti-septic and analgesic.

There is no need to go to Thailand to experience authentic, fresh and delicious Thai food. Many of the spices used in Thai cuisine are commonly found in Indonesia and many are originally from here. This lucky factor, combined with year-round availability of fresh fish and produce, make the Gili islands a great place where to indulge in juicy Pad Thai, creamy Massaman curries and pungent papaya salads. Love trying new foods when travelling but cannot renounce to high hygiene and service standards, nice views and to your chocolate addiction? Try the Waterfront in Gili Air, where you can taste the best of Thai cuisine without renouncing to mouth-watering desserts from Western traditions. All this by the beach, in a unique setting where Indonesian traditional architecture meets contemporary interior design, facing Mount Rinjani and one of the island's best snorkeling spots. 61 Gililife

A complete experience “Moving from London to Gili Air has been a challenge, but I like it more than I thought I would.” Jan, the Waterfront manager said. Jan changed from managing a highend restaurant in London to the Waterfront, where he translated his attention to quality food, high hospitality standards and professionalism. “The stunning landscape and Indonesian people's warmth and friendliness are what convinced me to stay.” he added as he admired the sky turning from grey to all shades of orange and pink as the sun set. Gililife 62

Open from 7am to 11pm, the Waterfront is more than the typical beachfront restaurant. A beautiful ancient Joglo transported from Java makes up the main restaurant building, creating a distinct environment and giving a stylish touch to the calm though groovy atmosphere of the place. Ten midrange bungalows are located at the back of the restaurant and typically attract honeymooners, young couples and divers of any age. In fact, the location clearly calls for diving and the Waterfront is the best place to chill in between

dives. Waking up in the area where things are happening, right in front of Manta dive Biorock sites - which are more and more teeming with marine biodiversity - seeing divers boarding boats and locals going to work, you cannot be lazy! But, if you want, you can always hide in the pool at the back or behold the landscape from your privileged seat at the Waterfront!

Thai & more The selection of Thai dishes recently introduced complements the rich restaurant menu, which offers vegetarian&vegan options as well as juicy burghers, wraps a variety of fresh salads, healthy juices and state-of-the-art cocktails to savour by the beach.

You can indulge in a vegan cappuccino or in a hummus platter, sure that all you eat is fresh and locally sourced! Another reason to choose the Waterfront? No plastic straws are used and a strict waste sorting is implemented to reduce the environmental impact.

Gililife recommends you to try... Tom Yum Soup: An evergreen of Thai cuisine, spicy and refreshing as it should be Pad Thai: The restaurant's bestseller representing the Voice of Thailand. Chocolate Mousse: Known by many local expats as the best in Gili Air!

Did you know? Every other Saturday, the Waterfront hosts the famous quiz night, where local expats and tourists alike show off their knowledge on different topics. Expect a lot of laughter and fun!

GILI FRUIT

DURIAN Durian [from the Indonesian/Malay word Duri, meaning “thorn] is a fruit unique to Southeast Asia and native to Sumatra and Borneo, locally known as The King of Fruits. It grows on very tall trees and can weight as much as 5 kg. Durians ripen in around 4 months; when they fall, they have to be consumed within maximum four days, after which they are considered overripe. Indonesia is the largest durian consumer in the world and North Sumatra is apparently the best place to find this fruit, because there are many varieties and durians can be found all year round. Durians owe their infamous reputation to their strong smell and taste, which not everybody likes and somebody simply adores. There are many varieties of durian and many stages of maturation. The best way to choose a durian is to have the Tukang Durian choose it for you. In Indonesia, durians are usually sold on street stalls and the tukang durian is the salesperson and the expert who will advice you best according to your tastes. Remember: the more ripe the fruit, the stronger the taste and the smell!
