THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 22

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveler to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 26

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumored growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travelers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkeling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 27 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is Gililife 28

the least developed island where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air

GILI MENO

baruga-style accommodation for the true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apano problem!!

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

gili AIR

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 30

that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 34

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

FREEDIVING

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

Gililife 36

Learn to diver deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world without adventuring into the ocean.

Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and

a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 40

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where to meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 42

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for

both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; ear-candles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy at land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewelery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself explore a WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse on sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as flying high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

A homely experience... Julie's laughter can be heard from afar, followed by the echo of the rest of the Slow staff, a happy team who adapted impeccably to the discreet yet highly attentive culture of service promoted at Slow. “It is important that our team feels like a family.” Julie, one of the founders and passionate Gili Air resident said. “We transmit this homely atmosphere to our guests, who naturally feel at home.” she added. Julie arrived in Gili Air few years ago as she was travelling the world and, for the first time in many years, Gililife 52

she decided to stop. “This island has a magic energy that struck me immediately and which has allowed me to grow and shine. This is what Slow is about: a personalised experience in total freedom and relaxation.” she explained with a smile. No need to rush from one activity to the next; guests can choose among a wide array of activities available on the island or to breathe the peace of one of the ten private pool villas, where a range of breakfast options are served at any time you wish and a personal chef

is available for charming private dinners. Slow concept is also about environmental awareness. No plastic is used in the property and a strict waste separation policy is implemented by the staff, who regularly organises beach clean-ups. Guests are encouraged to reduce their energy consumption and this is not difficult on an island where bicycles and horse carts are the only means of transportation!

Slow Spa, the extreme treat A world on its own, Slow Spa is undoubtedly the best spa currently on Gili Air. The extensive use of bamboo and natural materials and the annexed garden create a unique indoor space, where nature and comfort meet to ensure relaxation in tune with the surrounding tropical environment. Slow therapists regularly attend trainings and their golden hands know how to unknot and relax. Among other beauty treatments, a

particular note deserves the waxing, made using an Arabic ancient beauty recipe. Honey, deminaralised water, white sugar and lemon, which is used as an anti-septic, are mixed and cooked at a precise temperature. The wax is then applied by hand on the skin. Much less painful than the regular waxing, this hand technique takes off all dead celles and makes the skin of the whole body very soft and smooth.

TAKE ONE BREATH AND GO

GILI YOGA & FREEDIVE WHERE BREATH MEETS BREATH GILI TRAWANGAN

Any time there is motion we know air must be present. As consciousness continues to move along the spectrum of the elements away from ether and towards form, the air element is the point where it takes on a particular direction or goal; an idea of what to move towards. As human beings, we experience life thanks to our breath, which connects us with ourselves and allows us to find balance with our body, mind

and spirit. This is the same approach taken at Gili Freedive and Yoga, a place where breath meets breath and where you will explore different ways to use this mobile and subtle energy and practice consciousness. Study with Kate and Mike and you will embark on a path of conscious evolution and reconnection; you will learn to take in breath and use it in all aspects of your lives, in and out of water. 55 Gililife

GILI ZOOM

Yoga Just stepping into the yoga shala at Gili Yoga is a relieving experience. A few metres behind Trawangan's main strip is this place of peace, a large breezy wooden deck infused with supportive and cheerful energy transmitted by Kate, a cultivated and competent Yoga teacher and freediver. In all her classes, she transmits knowledge of the practice and leaves space to students to find their own path and find balance as they breath in and out of the water. Several yoga classes are available throughout the day, along with meditation practices and introduction to different breathing and relaxation techniques. Gililife 56

Gili Yoga also organises Yoga retreats and their first Yoga Teacher Training (200hrs), which is also the first in the history of Gili Trawangan, took place in November 2016, certifying passionate yogins to teach this ancient practice of union. “The path of yoga and the path of freediving are parallel.” Kate said. “Both practices are intimate meditations and practices of consciousness, awareness and recognition to sort out patterns, beliefs and understand what drives you forward and what holds you back. From a yoga perspective, I think freediving is yoga underwater.” she added.

Freedive Freedive Gili is among the first dive centres that opened in Gili Trawangan and remains the only one that focuses on this practice, which allows to explore the underwater world with only one breath. The centre is “an environment to share, play, teach and thrive and includes a yoga school, a healthy restaurant and nine newly built bungalows. It offers freedive courses of all levels, from beginners to instructors' courses, which cover freediving physiology and safety, yoga&meditation, anatomy classes as well as nutrition tips and individual practice in the private gym. Kate and Mike, the drivers behind this venture, are award-winning freedivers who adopt a holistic approach to the teaching of this ancient practice. Both experienced instructors and avid

explorers of the marine environment, they share their passion with love and personality, passing on to all their students the respect for life in the elements, believing that both yoga and freedive are inclusive and universal pathways of connection, aliveness and love. There are many different aspects to apnea. Unlike common perceptions, there is not need of much physical strength, but it is all about learning to relax and to find an empty mind when underwater. May you choose to refine your spearfishing techniques, immerse in a deep training or simply seek a silent way to admire marine wonders, freediving will allow to learn a lot about yourself in the process and studying with Freedive Gili will ensure you do it in total safety, comfort and fun.

Restaurant The healthy high-vibe restaurant is the latest addition to Gili Yoga and Freedive centre. Open all day every day, the restaurant serves healthy dishes and smoothies from vegetarian and vegan cuisine including choices of raw food. Is there a better way to spend your time between a yoga and a freedive class than savouring good food on an oceanview terrace?

LIVE AND LOVE THE BIG BLUE

BLUE MARINE DIVE SCUBA - FREEDIVE - YOGA - SUP GILI AIR & GILI TRAWANGAN

Imagine a day without water. Imagine not being able to see, touch or drink the cool, soft, encompassing energy of this liquid element, which composes over 70% of our body. Impossible, isn't it? Water is known as the universal solvent because of its ability to dissolve other substances and suspend them in its medium. Within the body, it transports nutrients to the cells, and toxins away from cells; it is the river upon which life flows. Now, imagine a day immersed in this element, breathing inside and outside of it, beholding the ocean turning to green, turquoise and deep blue marine as the day unfolds. This is a day at Blue Marine Dive Resort, the place where all activities gravitate

around water, the element of big feelings and imagination. Start your day admiring the sunrise over Mount Rinjani as you gently paddle on a Stand-Up Paddle Board, dive in the Big Blue and explore Gili islands' best dive spots, breathe in tune with the motion of the waves in the yoga shala by the beach and take a single breath to hear the noisy silence of the ocean as you freedive and unearth your limiting beliefs. At night, when plankton rises to the surface, get dizzy as you swim in the glowing water and discover what marine species prefer to go out when the reef gets dark. Immerse yourself in the water, immerse yourself in the world of Blue Marine! Your water experience starts here! 63 Gililife

From all PADI courses – beginners to Dive Master and professional training – to recreational diving, enriched air diving or Freediving, all diving needs can be accommodated. If you do not feel like going underwater, there are many other activities you can join to experience the Big Blue. Join Gililife 64

a sunrise or sunset stand-up paddle tour or venture off on a kayak to admire the beautiful coastline from a distance. MandalaBlue Yoga is one of the latest additions to the family. This peaceful oceanfront yoga studio annexed to the dive centre offers a full range of everyday dropin classes suitable to all levels, including hatha, vinyasa, yin and fly-high yoga and, for the most adventurous, even SUP yoga and acroyoga! The only yoga studio on the three islands that is right on the beach, MandalaBlue Yoga is the place where to connect with yourselves and with nature at the same time. Breath finding rhythm in the motion of the waves just in front of you as you practice!

Meet the family “The vibe and easy-going atmosphere is what I like most about working here. There is no gap between Westerners and locals; everyone works and has fun together as a family”. Nick, Blue Marine manager in Gili Air said. “Tony, Musa and our team have a wealth of knowledge about islands currents, weather conditions and biodiversity”. He added with a smile. Tony and Musa have been part of the Blue Marine family for years and, together with head local divemasters Dedi and Ong

and crew, they are the backbone of Blue Marine and act as mentors to young Western divemasters as well as to experienced instructors, not forgetting to mention the multilingual team of Western staff, who can calm pre dive nerves in no time. Locally owned, Blue Marine Dive is a big family of local and Western water aficionados and it is common to see returning customers hanging out with the crew.

BACK TO NATURE IN STYLE

LA COCOTERAIE GLAMPING IN GILI TRAWANGAN

The Earth is a living being, sustained by swirling vortices of subtle energy that rotates throughout the planet. There are places on Earth where this energy is concentrated, sites believed to have healing properties on the mind and spirit of who visits them. When feeling stressed or weak, these places have the power to vitalise our body and mind, and refill our spirit with the universal life force emanated by Mother Earth. Visiting one of these magic powerful sites is probably what pushed you to book your tropical holiday, hoping to find that peace of mind that would recharge you for the rest of the year. However, as mass tourism spreads, most holiday destinations have become crowded and aseptic reproductions of our life

back home, and the risk is to end up accommodated between four concrete walls and getting our finger stuck on the air-con remote control. The Gili islands hold some special places conceived to bring visitors back to the grounding feeling of being close to nature. La Cocoteraie in Gili Trawangan is one of them: a cozy and homely ecolodge where to refill yourself with much needed energy and from where freely explore the less touristic part of the island. Forget about the noise coming from nearby building sites or the rancid odour of frying food emanated by the restaurant next door. At La Cocoteraie, you will wake up at the sound of chirping birds and with the sweet smell home-made jams, breathing in full nature. 67 Gililife

GILI ZOOM

Luxury eco-friendly experience Far from the party crowd and immersed in an atmosphere of peace is La Cocoteraie, a unique eco-lodge featuring eight luxury tents amidst a lush tropical garden, a swimming pool and a restaurant serving an international menu. Inspired by the concept of glamping – from “glamour” and “camping” - La Cocoteraie offers an holiday experience in contact with nature yet in total comfort. The tents are equipped with hot water and air-con - to be used in moderation! - and the property implements a strict waste management system, making use of bamboo straws, biodegradable towels and recycled glasses as much as possible. The colours and the flavours of the Earth are reflected in every detail, from the natural and recycled materials of the interior design to the ingredients in the kitchen. While

Gililife 68

natural building materials as wood, bamboo and natural stone allow more oxygen flow in the brain, homemade jams, healthy smoothies and earthy curries provide the nutrients needed for a day busy indulging in your favourite activities. Simple yet accurately furnished and decorated, La Cocoteraie is full of interesting objects converted into pieces of furniture, results of the interior designer's passion for recycling and for collecting items from Indonesia's rich cultural heritage. The complimentary use of bicycles, snorkeling gear, headlights and unlimited tea and coffee makes the holiday experience in Gili Trawangan more relaxed, and the possibility to join a snorkeling trip or a horse ride together with other guests ensures you will have a homely stay at La Cocoteraie.

Who cooks together, stay together All who have visited La Cocoteraie remember the staff, a dedicated team ready to listen, make you laugh or let you rest and offer you privacy as you need. Many of them have been part of Nathalie's team (the Western manager) for many years, following her first in her venture at Gili Cooking Classes and eventually at La Cocoteraie. They have made a long way since their first steps in

the kitchen and are today a tight group of friendly well-trained staff, who are pleased to share their knowledge of Indonesian culture and curious to listen to guests' stories. Talk to Eko or Ozzy if you want to have the best tips on what to do in the Gili islands, and trust Muhid, the local manager, to help you customize your holiday with one of the land or sea activities organised by the property or by nearby businesses.

GILI FRUIT

PAPAYA One of the fastest-growing trees in the Gilis, papaya trees produce fruits all year round. Originally from Mexico, papayas are grown across the world's tropical regions. Different parts of the plants and the fruit are used: the leaves are edible and the bark is used to make rope. Called “The fruit of the angels by Christopher Columbus, the papaya is a pear-shaped fruit with a yellow skin and deep orange flesh. It has a sweet taste and a soft, butter-like texture; its seeds look like peppercorn and are edible. Ripe papayas are consumed raw, while unripe ones are cooked into delicious curries. You can store papayas at room temperature or in the fridge if they are already ripe. 0min

HEALTH BENEFITS Vitamin C: more than 220% in each papaya fruit Fiber: helps lower high cholesterol levels Papain: an enzyme that helps digest proteins and lowers inflammations
