“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” Anatole France

Anatole France

A powerful statement that resonates with all animal lovers on the planet. This passionate love of animals is the driving force behind many of the non-profit projects that are currently being run on the Gili Islands. In this issue, we explore the lives of our resident creatures and the dedicated people who take care of them. The Gili Islands are home to horses, cats, goats, reptiles, poultry and various other small animals. There are many kind-hearted souls who go above and beyond to inform local residents on animal care and avail themselves to assist land and sea animals in need. The Gilis are alive with events and activities and visitors are bound to find something of interest. Read about Freediving, the up-coming Colour Run Festival and make sure to book into the Slow Food and Yoga Festival in October. Explore the island of Lombok and find quality surfing in the Kuta area. There is so much to do on our islands and we are certain you will be contemplating your next trip back to the Gili Islands!

Gililife 20

YOU ARE ON THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE &HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May

to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals

speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle on the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions, but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in. 21 Gililife

DESTINATION GILI TRAWANGAN

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from

Gililife 22

a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping, entertainment and activities. Luxury Villas abound and less expensive accommodation is available for the budget traveller. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities.

Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be eyeopening, its not an escape from reality, just a slightly different one, but understandably surreal none the less! There are several conservation organisations based here including Gili Eco Trust, The Gili Shark Foundation, Cats of Gili and Horses of Gili. For getting involved in beach clean ups visit one of the dive centres on the island, make your vacation meaningful by giving back to the island! As you may know - there is no motorized transport on the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. The island is still reflective of local lifestyle and

Gililife 26

GILI MENO

time moves at a leisurely pace. Out of the three Gilis, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by large crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront

terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 30

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

LOMBOK

AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL BEAUTY AND TRADITIONAL LIVING

LOMBOK

With its largely unspoiled natural environment, vivid, diverse traditional culture and increasing infrastructure, Lombok island is an interesting compromise between touristic Bali and wild Sumbawa. Jagged coasts and sheltered bays, white-sanded empty beaches and lush green hills lined by rice paddies overlooked by majestic Mount Rinjani characterise Lombok’s natural landscape, while in traditional villages a diversity of practices coexist. The island is dotted with mosques, symbols of Islam, the Gililife 36

most practiced religion, but there are some important Hindu temples scattered in the West, heritage of the Hindu tradition. Sasak people, Lombok’s indigenous people, practice a syncretic form of Islam (wetu telu), which blends Hindu-Buddhist influences, Sunni Islam, animism and ancestral worship. Authentic Sasak villages offer a valuable insight into the island’s traditional culture, famous for the turun temurun, Capital city Mataram is a busy town with colourful markets and the gate to Senggigi’s

stunning bays in the North and Mt Rinjani’s green slopes to the East. In the South, world-class surf breaks, a multitude of pristine beaches and gentle hills are an open invitation to explore the surroundings at one’s pace and enjoy the tropical vibe. The East offers a complete different scenery; from waterfalls, rainforests and hills carpeted with rice paddies, the surroundings of Mount Rinjani provide a myriad of hike options, from easy walks to very challenging treks in a beautiful panoramic landscape. In the South-West, facing Lembar harbour and Sekotong, are the less known Gilis (meaning “small island”), where snorkelling in the lively reef and chilling on the empty beaches are the few tourists’ main activity. With its cultural and environmental diversity, Lombok is the ideal destination to discover something new everyday.

SCUBA DIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. colourful fish schools! Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a sought-after destination for muck diving. There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING RESPONSIBLE SNORKELLING: • DO NOT walk on the reef • DO NOT touch ANY sea creatures or reef • DO NOT take ANYTHING from the ocean • BE AWARE of strong currents Gililife 42

Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

Peacock Mantis Shrimp The Peacock Mantis Shrimp, or Odontodactylus Scyllarus, is an exquisite underwater creature thriving in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. There are over 400 species of this colourfully shelled sea dweller and they typically use coral reefs for cover. Its forelimbs look like those of a Praying Mantis and the bright coloration strikingly resembles peacock feathers, naturally making it a breath-taking sight under water.

pack a punch. They use a pair of dactyl clubs to produce a punch at the rate of 80 kilometres per hour, or 2.5 times the force of its body weight. This mighty shrimp exerts extreme force to smash through the shells of crabs and clams, which is why it is unsafe to house them in aquariums. Their incredibly intense punch creates shockwaves that can stun or kill helpless prey without even making direct contact.

Before you go thinking they might make a cute addition to your personal aquarium, you should probably know that the Mantis Shrimp can literally

This little creature is a great reminder of why we never touch or interfere with marine life!

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATER SPORTS The Gili Islands offer endless possibilities for water lovers besides diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a glass-bottom boat tour to see the underwater world without venturing

into the ocean. Rent a kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a stand-up paddle board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice surf spots which are worth a “dawnie. Please

be aware of currents and tides and surfing experience is advisable. Subwing is the ultimate water sport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while parasailing will take you to new heights and safely land you back in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

FREEDIVING A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

Summertime as a kid meant long days at the pool, which would end when my mom stood up and walked over to us to tell us it was time to go home. Trying to extend the day for just a few more minutes, as soon as I would see my mom coming, I would take one breath and swim underwater to the other side of the pool so that my mom couldn’t talk to me. Little did I know that this was my unofficial introduction into freediving.

I had never tried scuba and definitely had never heard the term freediving before signing up for my first course. But after talking to the instructors of the shop, they had my attention. I’ve said for years that I am terrible at breathing, so I wasn’t sure I would be any good at freediving. What I learned is that it is not so much about how you breathe, but about techniques, you learn to relax your body and mind so that you use less oxygen.

Freediving is a thing that almost everyone does, but you might not be familiar with the term either! Have you gone snorkeling and dived down to the bottom to get a closer look? That is freediving! Have you challenged your friends to see who could hold their breath the longest in the pool? Also freediving! Are you a surfer that goes for the big waves and spends some time underwater after a wipeout? Freediving. Now that I have completed a few freediving courses on Gili Air, I feel like so much more of the ocean is available to me. When I see turtles on a snorkeling trip, I can safely stay underwater for much longer to be able to observe these beautiful neighbors of ours in their home (from a distance of course, don’t stress out the turtles!). If I see something sparkling from the ocean floor, I know how to equalize the pressure in my ears so that they don’t hurt and I can dive down 20+ meters to check if it is lost pirate treasure (no luck so far). Best of all, I have met so many other freedivers just by spending time going out on fun dives and spending time at the shop. Talking to other people that are also in this small, but very international community is so amazing. Listening to other people who have seen whale sharks, mantas, pyrosome, just makes you want to grab your mask and suit, and a buddy (never freedive alone!), and head out to the nearest ocean to explore and just play in nature’s playground. If you haven’t tried freediving yet, then make the most of your time here in the Gilis and sign up for a course. You will learn more about your body, about your mind, and then apply those things while you freedive and learn more about the ocean. It is an experience that can’t be compared to anything else. See you in the blue! Written By: Jen Drew

Corals are animals! Interacting with this fragile ocean ecosystem will damage it.

RESPECT OUR POPULATION OF TURTLES Never touch them and avoid fish feeding sessions. Report any snorkelling tours that touch or pick up turtles.

RESPECT OUR BEACH Do not collect seashells from the ocean or the beach. Hermit crabs use empty shells as they outgrow their own and waves break down shells to make sand and sustain our beaches.

Gililife 58

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of discerning yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice on the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offer quality treatments at a good price.

PEOPLE OF GILI

Meet some of the wonderful people of the Gili Islands

ACOK ZANI BASSOK SAMA-SAMA BAR FOUNDER (Gili Trawangan)

I was born on Gili Trawangan but grew up on Gili Air. I started my career in the diving industry with Blue Marlin Dive Trawangan in the 1990s. I started working there when Blue Marlin only had ten tanks and five diving gears. Then, I had a dream to create a reggae bar. In 2002, my wife and I built two bungalows and we named it ‘Sama Sama Bungalow.’ Then, I turned my reggae bar dream into a reality in 2005. The initial building of Sama-Sama Bar was small and made out of concrete. My friends, artists, tourists and singers, helped us with the unique design of the current building of Sama-Sama Bar which is mostly made from recycled wood. I love recycling and for two years, I collected recycled wood by buying broken wooden boats and houses. On the Grand Opening night after the renovation, my initial capital costs were Rp 3.5 million and beers that were not paid upfront. At the end of the night, I earned Rp 27 million. Fourteen years ago, before SamaSama Bar existed, Trawangan was Gililife 62

quiet and dark by 7 pm. Every bar on the island had a DJ that played just electronic music and Sama-Sama Bar was the first bar on the island that offered ‘live reggae music’. Through Sama-Sama, I created events like ‘Full Moon Party on Gili Trawangan’, ‘Jamming Island’, ‘Reggae on the Island’ and ‘Tribute to Bob Marley’.

Melalui Sama-Sama, saya mengadakan acara ‘Full Moon Party on Gili Trawangan’, ‘Jamming Island’, ‘Reggae on the Island’, dan ‘Tribute to Bob Marley’.

IBU PUT GROCERY VENDOR (Gili Air)

I have sold local vegetables and sweet snacks from my bicycle here in Gili Air for the past seven years. My humble home is in Gunung Sari, Lombok, not in Gili Air. I take the public boat every day from Lombok to Gili Air and back again to Lombok. I typically start selling at 11am until 9pm. It takes me 1.5 hours every day to get home from Gili Air. My loyal customers are mostly local people who work in restaurants, hotels, and the hospitality business. The most difficult part of my job is some people would buy my vegetables, and they promised they will pay me the next day, but they ended up quitting their job and left the island and never pay the money they owe me. But I’m happy doing what I do. I earn enough to feed my children and pay my scooter loan in Lombok. Before working in Gili Air, I worked abroad from 2003 to 2011. I was a domestic helper in Malaysia in 2003, a babysitter in Singapore, a masseuse and a traditional medicine helper in Thailand and a domestic helper in Saudi Arabia. The highlight was when my Singaporean employer took me with on their vacation in Sydney, Australia. For me, success is a gradual process. Success is

when you have achieved inner peace even though you are not rich and peacefully exercise a simple lifestyle.

ACEK EKA THE THIS - KON GUESTHOUSE TIP OF THE TONGUE, WARUNG (Gili Meno)

My name is Acek which is a general childhood name for little girls on Gili Islands before they were given a name by their parents. In contrast, ‘Acok’ is a general childhood name

for every little boy on the Gili Islands. I am a housewife and a homestay business owner of ‘The This - Kon Gili Meno’, ‘Tip of the Tongue’ Warung and a kiosk which sells vegetables, delicious fruit and essential toiletries. I grew up on Gili Meno and back then we didn’t need an AC or a fan. The island was cool and there used to be many trees. Now, we need an AC or a fan because it is now much hotter. When I was a child, most local people owned a ‘rumah panggung’ or traditional wooden stilt house instead of a concrete house. My fondest memory was when neighbours, friends and family helped a house owner to move their ‘rumah panggung’. Together, they physically carried the house from north to south of the island. Now, this cultural tradition has completely vanished on Gili Meno and people prioritize earning money rather than properly taking care of each other. People have increasingly become more individualistic. This community togetherness from my past is something I truly miss. Selling local vegetables and toiletries at a kiosk on Gili Meno doesn’t generate much profit compared to my homestay business. If I buy the vegetables or soap at Pinggir (meaning Pemenang, Lombok Island), I usually earn just Rp 5000 profit, but if I buy them from a cart vendor who walks the street and goes back and forth between Lombok and Gili Meno daily, I can only earn Rp 2000 to Rp 3000 of profit. Therefore, to maximise profit, I grow some cassavas, bananas and vegetables. Here, we have a local community in which we barter with the organic produce from our garden because money is scarce on this island. By doing this, we also preserve the barter tradition that has existed on Meno since a long time ago. I charge a tourist and a local the same price. My husband taught me, “rich and poor people are the same. We are all just human.”

Nama saya Acek. Saya juga punya usaha homestay yaitu ‘The ThisKon Gili Meno’, usaha warung yaitu ‘Tip of the Tongue’, dan usaha dagangan berjualan sayuran dan kebutuhan rumah tangga. Sama – sama manusia.” 63 Gililife

ANIMALS

The Animals of Gili

Welcome to the Gili Islands where working horses, stray cats, and domesticated animals such as cows, goats and chickens live alongside locals and tourists. Although rich in underwater life, the Gili Islands are also blessed with wildlife on land. Reptiles such as monitor lizards (biawak), snakes, various sea birds, eagles, and Great White Egrets which can be observed at the Salty Lake on Gili Meno. With population growth, increased tourism, and lack of education on proper animal care and wildlife protection, these animals face challenges living in a tropical paradise. The good news is that Dr. Misha Hapsari, who runs the Gili Islands Vet Clinic, is now permanently on the islands to take care of our local faunae. The clinic is based on Gili

Trawangan behind Lutwala Dive and is subsidized by Animal Aid Abroad. She is the first and only vet serving Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno. She specializes in working horses but will treat any animal who is in need of medical treatment. Besides running a free or by-donation bi-annual vet clinic on cats and working horses, Dr. Misha focuses on treating injured animals and regularly educating cidomo drivers at the harbour. As a visitor, you are able to make a difference by bringing in a sick or injured animal to the Gili Islands Vet Clinic and making donations.

Domesticated Animals, Reptiles & Birds As the Gilis remain vehicle and motor free, some parts of the islands are still reminiscent of traditional village life and you are sure to encounter cows, goats, chickens and their young. The cows and goats may be wearing collars to prove that they are owned, but some do not, as inhabitants know and trust each other. Back in the days when the Gili islanders depended on agriculture for personal consumption and income, cows and goats were tied up on the owners’ land to ensure the livestock did not graze on the neighbors’ plot which was planted with cassava and vegetables.

Gililife 64

According to a livestock farmer on Gili Meno, most villagers typically invest in animals that can be sold at a reasonable profit for observed ceremonies such as weddings and religious rituals where beef and goat meat is highly prized. Freerange chickens are raised for their eggs, personal consumption and their manure is a source of organic compost. Reptiles such as Monitor Lizards (biawak), Tokay Geckos and snakes also inhabit the Gili islands. Monitor Lizards can grow up to about 2 meters in size. Lizards are shy creatures that promptly vanish into the grass when approached by

humans. They consume lesser prey and occasionally eat free-range chickens. The Tokay Geckos are endearing reptiles mostly seen at night feasting on bugs close to lights. Well-known for its loud call, it can be heard throughout the night. Wild snakes are also native to the Gilis and prefer grass and empty land as their habitat. If you love birdwatching, you can observe wild sea birds at the Salty Lake on Gili Meno which is a natural mangrove forest. If you are lucky enough, you may spot an eagle or Great White Egret which feeds on fish and call the mangrove roots their home.

Feline Island Family Visitors have always been curious as to why the Gili Islands are home to so many cats. Well in the late 1980s, local people brought cats to the islands to solve a rat problem amongst the coconut palms. The cat population grew unchecked and many of the cats were not in a healthy condition. Susanna, a Finnish expat, established a charity project, Cats of Gili, on Gili Trawangan in 2013 to benefit the lives of our feline friends. Cats of Gili function as part of Gili Eco Trust. Although the cats are mostly feral, some lucky felines are kept as pets. Cats of Gili organise two free spay/ neuter clinics a year, and charitable donations are welcome. Local residents, volunteers and visitors pitch in to capture cats that have not been de-sexed and admit them to the clinic for the procedure. This invaluable clinic maintains the cat population at a sustainable level and also ensures the cats remain healthy. The next cat clinic is in October. More than 3,000 cats have been spayed and cared for by the clinic, and as a result the cats’ health and wellbeing is on the rise.

Some of the health issues arising are typically the common cat flu, worms, eye and ear infections. The leading killer of cats on the island is a virus called Feline Panleukopenia, which can be prevented with a vaccination. Overall, since the establishment of Cats of Gili, the cat population is now healthier, and many locals genuinely love their cats. Due to an increased awareness, the cats are now receiving adequate nutrition from their adopted families or animal lover volunteers who feed the island cats on a daily basis. Tourists can be assured that there is no rabies amongst the Gili cats and petting is encouraged. Feel free to provide food and fresh water where you can and do not be alarmed when you notice our cats have very short or odd tails. This genetic and natural mutation of their tails provide an extra bit of quirkiness to our Gili cats.

ANIMALS

For the Love of Horses Approximately 450 horses are living on the Gili Islands. With the first animals arriving in the late 1990s, they were initially employed on Gili Trawangan to pull horse carts or as they are locally known, cidomos. Transporting horses to paradise presented considerable challenges. Gili Air, the only island with a natural aquifer within reach was barely a problem, as the water was fresh and easily procured. However, on the other islands, horses consumed salty water, which created health issues like kidney problems, dehydration and malnutrition. Fortunately, in 2010, the Gili Eco Trust and Jakarta Animal Aid Network teamed up to properly educate horse owners on animal husbandry and a freshwater source was installed. Because of a lack of native food, feed is imported from Lombok at an average cost of Rp.60,000 per 10kg bag which feeds a horse for two days. They are also fed rice powder which costs Rp.300,000 for a 70kg bag which lasts a week. The Gili Eco Trust along with Horses of Gili and many sponsors from abroad, particularly Australia, run a biannual veterinary clinic and provide medical care for sick and injured horses. They have gathered accurate data since 2015 and carefully monitor the horses' age, body condition, and

Gililife 66

dehydration levels. They also keep a record of their owners and monitor how many times a year the horse receives medical check-ups. Contrary to general belief, the horses have been kindly domesticated and used to run free most of the year. As there is no vast country-side space for horses to roam free here, they are restrained, which is not ideal. Tourists are often concerned when they see horses drooling. The

drooling is not due to dehydration, but a normal body response to having a bit in their mouth. Consider using cidomos mindfully, by not overloading the cart and paying the fare, with the knowledge that most of your tourism dollar is providing sustenance for these magnificent animals.

Veterinary Care Dr. Misha is the Gili Islands first permanent vet and her clinic, the Gili Islands Vet Clinic, is based on Gili Trawangan. Dr. Misha embarked on her career as a vet at a stable in the outskirts of Jakarta and later joined the Animal Aid Abroad Clinic Program, specialising in working horses. Due to her experience, she was offered the opportunity to relocate to the islands and take care of all our animal friends. Although the clinic is based on Gili Trawangan, Dr. Misha travels to Gili Meno and Gili Air to treat

horses, cats, cows, goats and any sick or distressed animals. The majority of her patients are the working horses and feral cats. As the clinic is a non-profit venture, Misha offers a complimentary service to owners who cannot afford treatments such as the cidomo drivers and she charges pet owners’ reasonable prices to ensure the clinic is sustainable. Donations are always welcome, and the money is used to buy the best medication possible and enables the team to spend more time on education. “The fundamental reason we established the clinic is to progressively improve the overall health quality of all animals on the three Gili Islands and to educate residents on proper animal care, said Misha. When Misha is not occupied at the clinic, she actively reaches out to the cidomo drivers at the Gili Trawangan harbour, checks on their horses. Thus far, she has treated more than 50 cats and horses combined since June 2019.

Sharks In 1993, the waters around the Gili Islands were declared a Marine Protected Area by the Indonesian government. Over the past 26 years, a historic boom in tourism and coastal development around the Gilis, have significantly improved the local economy, but severely threatened the local shark and turtle populations. Inadequate island waste management, increased boat traffic, and careless naive tourists have had their impact. The dedicated team at Gili Shark Conservation assist in minimising the impact by reporting underwater surveys of the local marine life to

the Indonesian government. Ashore, they promote their ‘Plastic Free Paradise' campaign and hold weekly sessions for the local elementary school to educate the local kids on eco-friendly practices. Gili Shark Conservation particularly cares for blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, found throughout the IndoPacific region. People believe they are dangerous, but reef sharks feed solely on fish and octopus and are rarely aggressive towards humans. Sharks are frequently caught as

Turtles The Gili Islands are referred to as the ‘Turtle Capital of the World’ for the abundance of turtles in the surrounding waters, in particular the Hawksbill and Green Turtle varieties. Green Sea Turtles, have a mostly vegetarian diet, consuming mostly seagrass, or the occasional jellyfish. Adults can grow up to 114 cm in length and weigh around 190 kg. Hawksbill Sea Turtles have a sharp, curving beak which allows access to food from crevices in the coral reefs. They eat sponges, anemones, squid and shrimp. Adults can grow up to 91 cm in length and weigh 40-60 kg. Hawksbill shells, the primary source of tortoiseshell material used for decorative purposes, has caused

Gililife 68

them to be on the endangered species list. Reaching sexual maturity can take 20-30 years, with a lifespan of around 80 years. The young turtle’s journey from the beach to the shore is imperative to organ development and strengthens their diving and breath hold. Around the Gili Island, projects attempting to aid the turtles, have been redirected into other methods. The hatchlings avoid the shore and potential predators, preferring to seek shelter around floating logs or

a bycatch during fishing and die suffocating due to a lack of movement and oxygen absorption. Indonesia is majorly invested in the fishing industry where shark fins command a high price. While there is doubt over whether shark-finning occurs in the Gilis, it is critical to spread positive messages about these misunderstood creatures and the vital role they play in the marine eco-system.

driftwood. The process of hatchlings rubbing their bellies along the sand, ensure the females return decades later to the exact spot where they originated! Protecting the nesting sites and cleaning the beaches, is the current approach, so its winners are selected naturally. The Gilis are ripe with turtle nesting areas, where the females tend to lay around 140 eggs each and burying them under the sand surrounded by hundreds of other females. In certain parts of Indonesia, turtle meat and eggs are eaten or traded, and the turtles are often sought after for tortoiseshell decorations. This traditional practice is important for local communities, however new efforts are being made to assist in helping make the methods sustainable.

69 Gililife

FREEDIVE FLOW EXPLORE PARADISE IN THE PUREST WAY GILI AIR Regardless if you are unfamiliar to underwater life or you are a seasoned scuba diver there is something uniquely magical about learning how to freedive. There is no better place to gain insight into one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world, than at Freedive Flow. Located on the picturesque island of Gili Air, Freedive Flow is not your average freediving school. It was founded by one of the industry’s most influential developers, Oli Christen. “Freediving is just you and the ocean,” says Oli. “When you are freediving, you are only freediving. There is no space in your mind or body for anything else.” Opening its doors in June of 2016, Freedive Flow has been passionately training people in this connective sport. On the surface, freediving seems simple! For freediving enthusiasts it is more than just holding your breath and diving, it’s akin to Gililife 76

meditation. Relaxation is key to freediving; your mind and body have to adapt in unison. For those who adopt the correct techniques, freediving allows you to be immersed in an experience that completely connects you with the ocean. Technique is the most import aspect of freediving, which is why learning proper techniques right away is so important, and Freedive Flow is one of the best in the business to learn from. Oli Christen, the man behind Freedive Flow has spent years building this once small unstructured sport into the well-detailed industry it is now. With a background in Industrial Psychology, he discovered his absolute love for freediving. Previously Oli wrote manuals and built training programs for various industrial businesses in his native country of Switzerland. After taking a break from work to travel around Australia, Oli eventually

www.freediveflow.com made his way over to Thailand and Indonesia, where he discovered this sport that is now his life’s passion. Starting as the worst student ever, Oli’s love for freediving drove his desire to improve his skills until he became a certified instructor. After teaching for a while Oli realized something was missing from freediving courses at the time. He applied his expertise to write and develop the AIDA Educational Freedive Program, which is now an industry standard. In 2018 Oli took a leading position in the team of freediving world record holder Alexey Molchanov to further develop his “Molchanovs Wave” education system.

Freedive Flow provides training and courses for all levels of expertise, from those who don’t barely know what freediving is to professionals that aspire to perfect their skills. Freedive Flow provides a one-day introduction course for those interested in learning a little more about the sport and full certification can be completed in as little as three days. Freedive Flow’s main goal is to have you feeling comfortable in the water. They teach you everything you need to know about staying safe, proper swimming techniques for freediving, motor skills, how to relax your body and how to take control of your breathing. All of these aspects tie into each other and affect the type of freediving experience you will have. Relax, take a breath and plunge into a life-changing experience… 77 Gililife

MAMA PIZZA LOVE AT FIRST BITE GILI AIR Pizza is such a well-loved food all around the world, almost everyone has their own favorite style and flavor, so when you find a new place that makes a good slice you feel a warm smile appear on your face. Luca from Mama Pizza definitely makes that good slice. Hailing from Italy, well known as the home of pizza and pasta, in a city near to Bologna is where Luca was raised. This region of Italy is quite the foodie area with traditional roots and recipes being passed down from family member to family member. Although Luca’s grandmother, mother, sister and himself keep to the traditions of cooking, creating the perfect pizza was something new to Luca before he arrived in Gili Air. Mama Pizza is Luca’s dream of being his own boss. Working as a pharmacist at home and after a visit to Gili Air Luca found a way to achieve this dream in a place he cares deeply about. For him, Gili Air is now home. The local community is so welcoming and friendly. The island has a great

Gililife 78

feel to it, and it gives Luca the opportunity to pursue another one of his passions, surfing. Instead of driving an hour and a half to maybe find some waves in Italy Luca can now wake up, step off the island and in less than 15 minutes be catching waves Opening in May of 2018 Mama Pizza is located on the western side of Gili Air, in a perfect sunset location. Arriving at the restaurant you are greeted with friendly staff and plenty of dining area to help you get your pizza fix on. Seating is available either inside the restaurant or out on the beach enjoying the lovely island view. Immediately looking at the menu for Mama Pizza, you get the feeling that this is a restaurant where everyone cares about the quality of the product, they serve every customer. Alongside the menu items are house recipes and stories connecting you with a more personal dining experience. Luca described his menu as limited because he feels that it is better to make a few things well than

www.facebook.com/mamapizzagiliair to have a large variety of half cared for items. Not only does this method provided a higher standard and better freshness for ingredients, but you also know that the staff is knowledgeable about everything they prepare. That’s not to say you can’t find something other than pizza on the menu, there are a few selections of pasta and salads available, but the main focus of Mama Pizza is on tasteful pizza and thirstquenching cocktails. Also limited does not mean a lack of pizza options, there is quite the diverse selection of toppings available, catering to many different tastes! According to Luca the two island favorites are the Margarita and the Spanish Chorizo.

Mama Pizza mixes this worldwide favorite dish with Luca’s Italian roots and Indonesian flavors. Every pizza crust is made with a special sourdough bread that is designed to have you feeling satisfied but still able to continue on your day afterward. The tomato sauce for Mama Pizza is locally made in house, every coffee brewed is from a bean roaster in Bali and if you order yourself the Four Cheese Pizza you will be enjoying a taste of Java! Both the Gorgonzola and Taleggio cheeses are made locally on a Javanese farm. Having these local ingredients, tying back into different areas of Indonesia is something Luca enjoys sharing with his customers.

GILI FOODS

COCONUT The mighty coconut is hailed as a superfood in the western world, yet is a traditional staple in the tropics. Coconuts are not really a nut, but a drupe, or a fruit with a hard covering enclosing a seed. Coconuts are one of the top 50 most valuable crops in the world and provide a source of food, drink, fibre, and fuel. Delicious water is found inside the coconut and is offered as a refreshing drink or used for medicinal purposes to boost ones health. The white flesh can be grated and after processing, milk and cream is produced. Coconut oil for cooking can be extracted from the flesh and grinding the flesh into a spreadable paste, produces coconut butter. Coconuts are high in fibre and contain vitamin B6, iron and minerals like magnesium, potassium, zinc, and copper. They are also very high in saturated fat meaning you should always enjoy coconut products in moderation. Many delicious recipes utilise coconuts. In Indonesian cooking, countless dishes contain coconut including rendang (a stewed, dry meat curry), various sotos (soups) and curries. A favourite local drink on a hot day is shaved coconut, served in coconut water and sweetened or flavoured to taste. Delicious!

THIS WEEKS DELICIOUS RECIPE:

Vegan Samosas PREPARATION

Filling 1 clove of garlic 1 onion 1 potato 1 sweet potato 200 grams pumpkin 1 carrot ½ cauliflower 3 tsp coriander powder 3 tsp cumin powder 2 tsp garam masala ½ tsp hot chili powder 1 tsp salt 150 ml of coconut milk 200 ml of water Pastry 300 gm Spelt flour 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 tsp salt 100 ml of water Coconut oil for frying Sweet Chilli sauce (serves 30 portions) 1/2 kilo of fresh red chili 4 cloves of garlic 250-300g of brown sugar 2 teaspoons of salt 300 ml of water

1. PASTRY • Mix all ingredients in a bowl to form a dough. • Divide the dough into four pieces. • Form each piece into a ball then roll out each ball into a flat circle, about 0.5 cm thick. (similar to the width and shape of a tortilla) • Divide each circle into four pieces by cutting in half horizontally and vertically. Each piece is like a triangle with a curved edge.

2. FILLING • Slice and sauté garlic and onion in coconut oil. • Cut the rest of the ingredients into small cubes and add to the garlic and onion. • Add all slices to this mix and fry on medium heat for 1 minute, stirring frequently so as not to burn the spices. • Add coconut milk and water and bring to boil. • Simmer for 1 hour.

3. SAMOSAS

4. SWEET CHILLI SAUCE

• Put 2 tsp of filling into each piece then fold in half to make a triangle shape and pinch the edges together to hold firm. • Shallow fry in coconut oil until brown and crispy, turning as it browns.

• Blend garlic and chili in a blender with a little bit of water until soft. • Pour the mixture into a saucepan and add sugar, salt and water and bring to the boil and simmer for 20-30 minutes.

Serve samosas hot with sweet chilli sauce for dipping. Delicious! 99 Gililife
