THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 26

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 28

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 29 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday Gililife 30

within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resortwhere a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the true outdoorsmen- er, and women! On the island there is an ATM and bike rentals are available

GILI MENO

if you wish to explore the island on a silent two wheels. Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apa- no problem!!

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

ACTIVITIES

An exceptional MARINE WORLD FULL OF

beauty & biodiversity

SCUBADIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Gililife 34

Expect to swim with elegant white and black-tip sharks and friendly turtles, observe extravagant cephalopods and ghost pipe-fish hidden in plain sight and explore wrecks turned into the home of colourful fish schools! Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a soughtafter destination for muck diving.

There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SPECIES

This months' featured species

Valentini sharpnose

PUFFER FISH

Unlike its elegant and cute appearance may suggest, this tiny colourful fish is very toxic, it is poisonous to eat and releases a deadly venom when attacked. Mainly diurnal, the sharpnose puffer can reach 11cm of length. With its bright colourful look, it is easy recognizable by the four black stripes on the back and the blue-grey dotted body, while its fins and tail are bright yellow. Commonly found in reefs and rocky lagoons until 55 mt of depth, the puffer fish is

Gililife 36

omnivorous, but mainly feeds on corals, molluscs and algae, which it “bites and chews” with its beaklike mouth. Females are in care of the nest, which they build in the substrate. Males are very territorial and the dominant ones spawn everyday with a different female of their “harem”. DID YOU KNOW...

The Paraluteres prionurus strongly resembles the puffernose, but it is not toxic. This is why it mimics it to protect against predators.

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 38

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 40

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

41 Gililife

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 42

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 44

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

REEF LIFE Gililife 50

Reef Life Connections and Relations in the Coral Reef

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the world, supporting an enormous community of life in and out of the water. In this varied community, the activity of each member influences and is influenced by the interaction with other species, which all are essential for the successful maintenance of life. From clear shallow waters to deeper and wider lagoons, the reef is a pool of interactions. If the balance of one or a group of related organisms is upset, the survival of the other is at risk.

REEF LIFE

Formation Coral Reef

Coral reefs require certain conditioins in order to to grow. Not only do they require a tropical climate, but also other factors which will allow them to strive and evolve over time

Light

The algae (zooxanthelae) which provides food for the coral needs the suns energy to carry out photosynthesis.

Temperature

tio n.

The ideal temperature in which tropical corals live is 23 to 25 degrees celcius. But they can also live in extremes of 18 to 30 degrees. If the waters are too cold it will slow the growth of the corals, and if the water is too warm it bleaches the corals eventually killing them.

...coral reefs started to form, after the last glacial period, when temperatures started to rise. Mainly made of hard corals, coral reefs owe their structure also to other organisms such as protozoans, which bind everything together, and the sand and sediments to sponges and bivalves. Sand is also created by grazers, namely sea urchins and fish such as parrotfish, who extract nutrition from the coral polyps, breaking down the limestone that makes up the base of the reef. There are 3 major types of coral reef formations, below describes each of them:

Fringing Reef

Barrier Reef

Separated from the shore by the Grows directly from the shoreline, lagoon, namely a stretch of with no lagoon between the reef and protected water. Barrier reefs are the shore. Fringing Reefs are the most common type of reef formation. far less common than fringing reefs or atolls

Atoll Found in deep waters, it is the result of the growth of coral on a tropical volcanic island that has gradually sunk in the water. An atoll usually comprises several islands separated by tiny channels. The process of formation of an atoll was first explained by Charles Darwin in 1842.

Sunken Volcanic Island Submerged Volcanic Island

The Gili Islands are atolls. 53 Gililife

REEF LIFE

Lagoon Protected shallow waters home to a rich variety of life forms Beach Sandy part of the lagoon, used for reproduction by sea turtles and as nesting or ground by some birds Seagrass This type of marine plants typically grow on the sandy floor of the lagoon. They form an habitat for juvenile fish and represent a source of food for several species of reef fish.

Mangroves Found between the land and the water, they are characterised by the presence of mangroves, unique trees that grow in sea water and filter it. Their roots form a very rich habitat, ideal for a variety of species that have adapted to life both in salted and fresh water, terrestrial and aquatic life such as crabs, juvenile fish and some reptiles. Patch Reef Islands of coral surrounded by sand or seagrass, serve as habitat for reef fish, sea stars and turtles as well as for molluscs.

Malaysia

Coral Triangle The Coral Triangle is a bioregion comprising Southeast Asia up to Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands. This marine area hosts 37% of the world’s reef fish species, 76% of known coral species and is the world’s largest tuna nursery. The Coral Triangle provides shelter and food to the abundant marine life living in its waters and its resources directly and indirectly affect the livelihood of billions of people. The invaluable resources of this rich environment are currently at risk because of over-fishing, coastal development and pollution.

Zones Coral Reef

Reef Crest The shallowest part of the reef, the reef crest is often exposed at low tide and hosts few species of corals, but is home to a variety of plants and animals, especially during high tide, when the pools of water are refilled and populated by sea urchins and crabs among others.

Reef Face

Upper Reef Face

There are several types of reefs, and different zones according to the depth and distance from the shore as well as the structure of the sea bottom. These have been shaped by the forces of the ocean and from the variety of relations that exist among living organisms and non-living factors. As for life forms, also the different zones of the reef are interrelated and form an ecosystem, depend on terrestrial ecosystems such as rainforests and small islands. Seagrass beds and mangroves protect from erosion and serve as nurseries, and they provide nutrients to reef life. Conversely, the reef protects the beach and is home to many reef species.

Divided into a lower and an upper zone, the reef face is the slope of the reef facing the sea and the most rich in reef life. Here, we find a variety of soft and hard corals, as well as all types of reef fish (parrot fish, butterfly fish, lionfish etc.) and sea turtles. As the reef face drops off, we enter in the lower zone, where there is less sunlight, therefore less corals and more animals such as moray eels, sharks and manta rays.

In order to protect the reef and its biodiversity around the Gili Islands, in 2004 the local environmental organisation Gili Eco Trust introduced the Biorock® technology. This innovative method was invented by Prof. Wolf Hilbertz and biologist Dr. Thomas J. Goreau and consists in using electrolysis to restore the coral reef. By applying low-voltage electrical current to live pieces of broken corals attached to a steel structure (the Biorock®), it has been observed that the coral survival rate increases and the reef is restored at a faster rate than in normal conditions. Thirteen years on, the Gili islands have become the largest Biorock® site in the world. For more information and to learn about Biorock® workshops in the Gili’s, write to info@giliecotrust.com

REEF LIFE

Relationships All sorts of plants and animals live in the coral reef and many species have evolved together and developed special relationships to help them survive. Some examples of relationship among reef organisms are: Gililife 56

Symbiosis

When two or more organisms live closely together; when one organism benefits from this relationship and the other one is neither helped nor harmed is called Commensalism; when both organism help each other is called Mutualism. When one organisms clearly take advantage of another organism, and this is harmed, is called Parasitism. • The clown fish and the sea anemone is a clear example of mutualism in the coral reef. • Crown-thorn sea stars have a parasitic relationship with corals, which they strip off their polyps for food.

Competition & Predation

Organisms can compete for space, for food or for reproduction. Some sponges release toxins harmful to other sponges to gain space in the reef; A predator – prey example is whale sharks preying on plankton and small fish

FREEDIVING REEF LIFE

Rules

Do your part to help keep the reefs healthy

Follow these guidelines form Gili Eco Trust, and find out more at www.giliecotrust.com

1.

DO NOT THROW CIGARETTES ON THE FLOOR DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS OR STRAWS Plastic is not biodegradable. Re-use your bags or buy a re-useable bag and keep it with you. And do not use plastic straws unless you absolutely need it.

2.

Collecting sea shells & corals, walking on, and touching reefs increases beach erosion

Enjoy Gili Reefs by watching & protecting. Do not take anything from the beach or ocean.

DO NOT COLLECT CORAL OR SEA SHELLS FROM THE OCEAN OR THE BEACH They are living animals, and taking them from their environment will kill them. Even if coral looks dead or white these pieces eventually become sand. Collecting anything from the beach will increase beach erosion.

3.

DO NOT TOUCH OR WALK ON THE REEF DO NOT DROP ANCHOR ON FRAGILE LIVING CORAL REEFS Coral and other animals are very fragile organisms which grow very slowly. Interacting with the oceans ecosystem will damage it. Respect their space and watch from a distance. An anchor dropped will destroy many of these corals and won't allow the reef to recover.

GILI ZOOM Gililife 62

THE MEXICAN KITCHEN AUTHENTIC MEXICAN CUISINE AND MARGARITA LOUNGE GILI AIR Considered by UNESCO as “an intangible cultural heritage of mankind”, Mexican food is one of the world’s most popular street food, with Mexico City named by Forbes as one of the top cities in the world where to indulge in street food cravings. It is not only the range of choice that makes this food so yummy, but also the use of fresh and healthy ingredients such as corn, beans and avocado, often seasoned with a twist of lime. Mexican food tradition has been influenced by their ancient culture as well as by waves of colonialism and worldwide migration; many recipes were invented by the Mayas and the Aztecs, others were introduced by the Spanish or are inspired by Caribbean flavours, and most adapted to modern taste and trends.

If Mexico rhymes with street food, Gili Air rhymes with Mexico, thanks to Janset and her team at The Mexican Kitchen. The restaurant serves a menu designed to nurture body and soul with life force and happiness, inspired by a selection of authentic Mexican street food with a contemporary presentation. Located in the “Latino” neighbourhood of the island, The Mexican Kitchen is the place where to savour the best Margarita ever, discover quality music out of the usual offer in the Gilis and where to taste delicious Mexican dishes admiring Gili’s stunning sunset. So....what are you waiting for? Satisfy your “antojitos” (little cravings) tonight!

63 Gililife

GILI ZOOM After 12 years spent travelling the world working for international Ngos, in 2013 Janset decided to change life and randomly got the chance to rent a beachfront land in Gili Air. Having spent many years in Mexico and with a passion for Mexican food and culture, she happily discovered fresh food used in this cuisine is easy to source in tropical Gili and started the first Mexican restaurant on the islands. Three years on, The Mexican Kitchen is an institution for good food and good vibes, where local expats and tourists can appreciate an informal atmosphere knowing their money also supports meaningful causes. Indeed, the concept of the place is to be an open art space aligned with a passion for nature's gifts from Pachamama: freshest and locally sourced ingredients. The Mexican Kitchen serves old Mexican recipes and a selection Gililife 64

of raw and vegan food prepared with activated nuts and pesticidefree produce. The mission is also to set an eco-conscious and sustainable enterprise example on the island. Janset supports her employees and the local community with education funds and donations; only re-usable bamboo straws and juice cups of coconut shells are used, and recycled and recyclable items are integrated in the deco, to which many visiting artists and guests have contributed by leaving some artwork behind. “I realised I can help much more to change the world with personal relationships and be more active than when sitting in an office working for big organisations.” Janset said. “Our support can be more direct and independent and I am happy to use a business that recalls the principles of a social enterprise to make my world a better world.”

Gili Life recommends... Go a bit before sunset and try The Mexican Kitchen famous Margarita or La Morena, their signature cocktail. Prefer non-alcoholic? Choose among the wide range of healing smoothies such as Tropical Moringa or home-made Kombucha; Tickle your tastebuds with a Sopa Azteca, a tortilla soup invented 200 years ago; Get in the mood with a Tlayuda Oaxaquenya, a fresh crunchy taste of local markets in Oaxaca; Don’t be shy and indulge in an Aguachile de Camaron followed by some Tiger Prawn Enchiladas; Get lost in the pleasure of a raw dessert to happily end your dinner; Freshen all this goodness with a frozen cold Corona beer and get mesmerized by the colours of Gili Air sunset!

GILI TEAK YOUR LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL AND PRIVATE EVENT VENUE! GILI TRAWANGAN Imagine getting married on a tropical island, your feet in the sand, marine breeze tickling your nose and your friends and family at your side as you tie the knot with your best half. This is many people’s dream and Indonesia is one of the most sought after destinations for a wedding out of the ordinary. Many wedding planner agencies are available to provide foreign couples who wish to organise their wedding in Indonesia with the most updated information and to take care of the paperwork and the “boring” part, while you can focus on choosing the venue and package most suited to your wishes. The most demanded destination for weddings is Bali, mainly for its stunning beaches and incredible hospitality. However, the Gili islands

are a very valid alternative, if not a better choice. More and more highclass venues are sprouting, and the charm of a small, non-motorised island appeals to many, especially to those who prefer to offer their guests a private yet laid-back atmosphere. The advantaged compared to Bali is the freedom to explore the islands at ease and to create a holiday within a wedding, which even your most difficult relatives will enjoy. With its sandy beaches, pristine waters and diverse ambience, Gili Trawangan is a sure bet your wedding will be memorable. For your wedding, choose Gili Teak, a boutique hotel located on the sunset and quiet side of the island and specialised in wedding receptions! 67 Gililife

GILI ZOOM On Gili Trawangan’s sunset side, a few minutes from Central, is Gili Teak, a beachfront luxury boutique hotel with a unique stylish design managed by experts in hospitality. With its 11 teak bungalows and an outstanding beachfront restaurant, Gili Teak is the perfect choice for young professionals with a higher budget who prefer to stay away from the younger party crowd and opt for taking a 10 min scenic bike ride on the nights they feel like exploring Gili T.’s famous parties. The spacious and very private bungalows are beautifully and carefully furnished in a rustic chic style and are equipped with all modern amenities; the open bathroom, featuring a fish pond and a double rain shower, ensure your pampering needs will be

satisfied. Step out of your bungalow to find a lush green shaded garden and a big sea-view swimming pool, where to relax in harmony with the surrounding nature. With a luxury spa and a yoga shala on the way, Gili Teak beach club offers guests the opportunity to enjoy Gili T beach life in style without having to move too much. TRAWANGAN DIVE FUN AND CARE IN & OUT OF THE WATER GILI TRAWANGAN Well before Trip Advisor discovered Gili Trawangan, three men saw the island’s considerable potential. An Englishman a Canadian and an Australian seized the opportunity and established a scuba diving business which also offered accommodation and food. The Trawangan Dive Centre (TDC) was born; not the first, not the biggest, but its trident logo now represents one of the most popular and successful centres for today’s discerning divers. Thanks to the owners’ and management’s determination for continuous improvement, TDC’s layout, buildings, facilities and capabilities have all expanded and improved since the early days, yet keeping the original and perfect beach front location. In front of the best snorkelling area on the island, though away from the noisy congestion just

to the south, TDC enjoys the best of all worlds. Offering PADI courses of all levels, from the recreational Discover Scuba diving initiation for the complete novice to Master Instructor and technical specialties such as CCR and decompression diving, TDC also offers Instructor Development Courses, who’s Course Director Holly MacLeod is a multi platinum PADI award winner. TDC is today listed by travellers’ famous guide the Lonely Planet as a “must visit” destination. Its popularity and success are due to the centre’s abilities in all that they do. Their excellent performance record stands any scrutiny; reviews reinforce confidence in their readers’ decisions and choices; and the opportunities available guarantee fun and enjoyment, all in a safe and wellorganised environment.

71 Gililife

GILI ZOOM TDC supports many local as well as worldwide conservation organisations and initiatives. On the island, the Gili Eco Trust oversees regular Biorock™ reef monitoring and restoration, with many workshops being held at the centre. Activities also involve support for Bali Sharks, who release sharks caught by fisherman in Bali into the Gilis’ marine protected waters and contributions to various other conservation initiatives. Out of the water, TDC staff assisted by volunteers regularly scour the island’s beaches for litter and the dreaded plastic. Moreover, the centre acts as a supporter and a fundraiser for all the island’s animal welfare clinics, particularly the cats and hard worked horses. A Charity Event held on the 5th August raised over 40 million rupiah with a spin the wheel game where guests could win some amazing prizes donated by local businesses. The proceeds will cover the majority of the remaining building costs for the new cat clinic.

Gililife 72

TDC features impressive state-of-theart facilities. Three dive boats serve the numerous and carefully-chosen dive sites, whilst two full sized pools suit both tuition and leisure. The centre’s range of equipment and maintenance facilities is comprehensive, as is the choice of merchandise in the shop. In short, if you need it or want it, TDC has probably got it! The dive centre also boasts 34 highly rated hotel rooms and covers for over 100 diners at tables on the well-tended beach or in the fabulous and the brand new Fat Cats bar and restaurant, which offers great sea views and awaits its official grand opening soon. Fat Cats features a new building and a new restaurant manager and chef with the menu updated with international classics and old favourites joining new options. At the top of the popularity list is the extensive choice of cocktails with new additions like the velvet martini, lavender and blueberry mojito and the passionflower cooler!

The dynamic TDC team of management and staff all bring well-qualified expertise and experience to every facet of the business. They are committed to providing ever better experiences for international guests, whether divers, diners or casual visitors seeking an enjoyable and comfortable escape. Staff, guests and students combine to provide a happy sense of community and of kindred spirits enjoying time together and loving what they are doing. Of course, the climate helps too. So, in short, TDC can provide everything that a great and memorable holiday needs.

GILI FRUIT

PASSION FRUIT Known as Markisa in Indonesian and in Malay language, passion fruits are a very popular fruit in the archipelago. Although its name is mistakenly associated to some aphrodisiac property, the name “passion actually refers to the Passion (torture) of Jesus Christ. It was named by Catholic missionaries in South America because of the resemblance of the fruit blossom to some of the symbols of the Passion of Christ. The plant is originally from South America, but today grows in tropical countries across the world on a fastgrowing vine, which produces beautiful light blue flowers. It exists different varieties of passion fruit, the most common ones having a pale yellow or a dark purple skin. It has a sweet yet slightly sour taste, a sticky texture and it is typically used to make fresh juices or yummy jams, jellies and desserts across the tropics.

HEALTH BENEFITS Content in Vitamin A, phenolic compounds and flavanoids reduce the risks of various types of cancer such as lung and oral cancers; also improves the health of the eyes and of the skin; High content in Vitamin C boosts the immune system and stimulates collagen production, which contributes to the firmness and healthy look of the skin; Rich in Fibers, it benefits the digestive system; Content in Magnesium, Copper, Iron, and Phosphorus benefits to the health and quality of bones, making them stronger and less prone to fractures; Gililife 84

INGREDIENTS 3 fresh passion fruit 1 cup sugar

PASSION FRUIT PUDDING CAKE

1/3 cup all-purpose flour 3 large eggs 1/3 cup butter 3/4 cup whole milk 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tbsp lime juice 1 tbsp lime zest 1 tbsp rum (optional)
