EN - Do you know the nudibranchs, these small and multicolored sea fairies? Each family, genus and species have a wide variety of shapes and colors, they look like flowers or sometimes spaceships. These amazing gastropods inhabit all the oceans of the world. There are beautiful specimens on the Gili Islands and throughout Indonesia, to the delight of shellfish lovers. Who knew that these tiny creatures would arise so much passion? Put on your mask and take your macro camera, let’s swim and make the best shots of nudibranchs! Chaque famille, genre et espèce possède une grande variété de formes et de couleurs, ressemblant parfois à des fleurs ou a des vaisseaux spatiaux. The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island. " There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea, at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans and enjoy a drier Gililife 18

micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes- Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken that unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak Sasak Gili Air which is slightly different to Sasak Lombok.About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on

the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been

introduced over the years. The first Western traveler to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beaten-track paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in. Les cocotiers ont toujours été présents sur les îles, les mangues, bananes et papayes sont venues plus tard. Le premier étranger venu de l'occident est arrivé en 1984 à Gili Air et les premiers touristes, dans les années 90 lorsque Bali a acquis sa réputation mondiale ! Aujourd'hui, les îles Gilis sont de plus en plus populaires et séduisent un bon nombre de voyageurs venus de différentes horizons. Au fil du temps, les habitants des îles Gili se sont adaptés à une multitude de changements et d'immersions culturelles, mais ont réussi à conserver leur identité. Historiquement, ils ont vécu des moments difficiles. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'île de Lombok et les Gilis étaient occupées par les forces japonaises. Les îles ont été utilisées pour maintenir les prisonniers de guerre et les habitants ont subi le travail forcé. Une colline située au sud de Trawangan a été utilisée comme poste d'observation et aujourd'hui les vestiges d'un bunker demeurent. When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything- including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumored growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling Gililife 20

It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkeling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation- ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know- there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

Cette île possède quelques-uns des plus beaux jardins de corail et le plus grand nombre de centres de plongée. Bien qu'elle soit surtout connue comme une île "de fête", Gili T cache un nature dense et douce, aventurez-vous loin des côtes pour découvrir la magnifique cocoteraie ou les plages désertes de la côte ouest. N'ayant aucun transport motorisé aux îles Gilis, la location d'un vélo est un excellent moyen de découvrir l'île, et aussi une expérience aventureuse ! La vie ici est surréaliste, c'est un mélange d'exotisme et de vie occidentale ! Il existe plusieurs organisations de conservation sur Gili T comme Gili Eco Trust (GET), Gili Shark Fondation et bien d'autres... Demandez autour de vous, dans les centres de plongée comment vous impliquer ! Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. There are no bicycle rentals in Meno but it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs

for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air barugastyle accommodation for the true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. DESCRIPTION

Golden silk orb-weaver is the common name for one of the species of Nephila spiders you will commonly see in the Gili islands. There are actually many different species of Nephila, all easily recognizable for the huge and strong web and the big body and long legs of the female presiding on it. Their long legs are specialized for weaving, with the tips pointing inwards. They are known for making the biggest webs in the world. Il existe beaucoup d'espèces différentes de Néphiles et on peut les reconnaitre facilement par leur grande et forte toile et par le corps grand et les pattes longues de la femelle qui la préside. Nephila sp. generally prey on insects who are lured into their big web. Sometimes bigger animals such as small birds and mammals get trapped and wrapped and devoured by the spider. Ces araignées se nourrissent généralement d'insectes qui restent piégés dans leur grande toile. REPRODUCTION

Sexual dimorphism is common among web-spinning spiders and females can be more than ten times larger than their mates, which are usually only few mm big. Many Nephila spiders practice indirect sperm transfer. Before courtship, the male deposits sperm into a bulb on his pedipalps. This bulb is inserted into the female’s genitalia to inseminate her. Female spiders can lay hundreds, or even thousands, of eggs. Many encase their eggs in a protective sac of silk, which they attach to the web. In some species, females die soon after laying eggs, while others protect or even feed the spiderlings. After hatching, many spiders disperse by ballooning, in which they form silk threads that act as parachutes and allow themselves to be carried away by the air currents.

Let's go for a ride! MENO WALL, ou la "ballade enchantée"... Situated in the North-West of Gili Meno, Meno Wall is a wall starting at 5 meters deep and descending to 23 meters. Mostly a quiet ride with a faint current (sometimes non-existent) which allows you to explore each cavity. If you dive during the monsoon, the current will probably be stronger and leave less chance for the exploration, but you will get the opportunity to do, on the same dive, Meno Slope which is situated between Meno Wall and the Bounty Wreck. On the slope you will meet Octopus, Sweetlips, Batfish, and Turtles. On the Wall you will be able to see Scorpionfish, Shrimp, Nudibranch, Crab, and school of Snapper. The diversity is such that you will go from one discovery to another. This site is also very adapted for night dives and suitable for all. Depending on the direction of the current you may end your stroll on the plateau at a depth of 5 meters, which is full of corals. Situé au nord-ouest de Gili Meno, Meno Wall est un mur commençant à 5 mètres de profondeur et descendant jusqu'à 23 mètres. C'est généralement une promenade plutôt tranquille avec un courant faible, voire inexistant, permettant d'explorer chaque cavité. Si vous plongez lors de la mousson, le courant sera probablement plus fort et laissera moins de chance à l'exploration, mais vous aurez l'opportunité de faire, dans la même plongée, le slope de Meno qui se trouve entre le mur et le Bounty Wreck. Sur le slope, vous rencontrerez poulpes, gaterins, platax, tortues, alors qu'au niveau du mur, vous aurez davantage le loisir de voir des poissons scorpions, crevettes, nudibranches, crabes, bancs de vivaneaux. La diversité est telle que vous irez de découverte en découverte. Site très adapté également aux plongées de nuit et accessible à tous niveaux. Le poissongrenouille agite cette “canne à pêche” et attire les autres animaux; ensuite il les attaque et les avale entier en ouvrant la bouche. Outres à la tendance à se cacher et ne pas bouger beaucoup, cette stratégie de prédation, appelée mimétisme agressif, rend le poisson-grenouille, un prédateur exceptionnel.

Frogfish is easily recognisable by an organ on its head specialized to lure prey, which is at the tip of its elongated dorsal fin and can be of different shape according to the species. Colours and body patterns also vary greatly among the different species of this tiny fish, which is usually between 5 and 40cm of length. Its body is covered in little spikes and its mouth can expand up to 12 times its resting size. On reconnait facilement le poissongrenouille (ou antennaire) pour la première épine dorsale, qui est allongée et spécialisée pour attirer les proies. Cet organe se trouve au dessus de la tête et peut être de forme différente selon l'espèce. Les couleurs et les motifs du corps changent beaucoup parmi les espèces de ce petit poisson, lequel mesure entre 5 et 40 cm. Le poissongrenouille présente le corps recouvert de petites épines et arrive à ouvrir sa bouche jusqu'à 12 fois plus que sa taille habituelle.

They mainly like shallow waters and live in rocky and coral reef or sandy bottoms, but some species prefer deeper depths and can be found up to 4,000 metres. DIET - ALIMENTATION Frogfish catches prey thanks to the dorsal fin, which looks like a small worm and is used as bait. By moving this “fishing line”, frogfish lures other animals, attacks them by surprise and swallows them, expanding its mouth to engulf them whole. It is not possible to differ male and female frogfish if not by dissection. About 10 hours before spawning, females start filling up with eggs; just before spawning, a female is so full of eggs (up to 180,000) that she starts floating up towards the surface. SNORKELING Turtles guaranteed! Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish! Tortues garanties ! De beaux coraux et des poissons de toutes sortes ! Snorkeling (mask, snorkel, fins) is a good way to freely explore the waters around Gili islands! You can see turtles, all kinds of fish, blue-spotted stingrays... Let yourself drift with the current, whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong! You can rent the equipment very easily on all three islands. Another alternative is a snorkeling trip - a day out on a boat. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, visiting the best snorkeling spots of the three islands. You stop for lunch and finish about 4pm. You can book this trip on site or at your hotel. What is a nudibranch? Qu’est-ce qu’un nudibranche ?

Nudibranchs literally means “naked gills” in Latin. These mollusks without shells belong to the class of marine gastropods. Though they are casually called “sea slugs”, they are not an aquatic version of our gardens’ slugs! They form a special group, the Opisthobranchs, characterised by the position of their gills behind their heart. Also, unlike the terrestrial slugs, their backs can be smooth or with numerous tentacles, the papillae, which correspond to their gills and are also an extension of their digestive system. Their head has rhinophores, which means that it is a pair of tentacles that they use to look for food on the ground, or to seek a partner by its smell. Nudibranchs are mostly carnivore creatures, roaming the corals and soil in search of small crustaceans, anemones and sponges, but some are herbivores, like the sea hare. Gililife 46

Les nudibranches, littéralement « branchies nues » sont des mollusques sans coquilles de la classe des gastéropodes marins. Mais il ne s’agit pas d’une version aquatique des limaces de nos jardins ! Elles forment le groupe particulier des Opistobranches, caractérisé par la position des branchies en arrière du cœur. Aussi, contrairement aux limaces terrestres, leur dos peut être lisse ou orné de nombreuses excroissances tégumentaires, des papilles qui leurs servent de branchies et sont aussi le prolongement de leur système digestif. Leur tête est pourvue de rhinophores, c’est-à-dire une paire de tentacules qui leurs servent à palper le terrain et à chercher leur partenaire par leur olfaction. Les nudibranches sont, pour la plupart, des carnivores arpentant les coraux et le sol à la recherche de petits crustacés, anémones et éponges, mais certains sont des herbivores, comme le lièvre de mer.

These creatures live in all the oceans of the world, including Antarctica! The greatest diversity can be found in tropical and coral areas. About 5,000 species are listed; their size may vary between 6 mm and 31 cm. New species are discovered by scientists almost every day! Nudibranchs are hermaphrodites, which mean that they have a set of reproductive organs for both sexes, but they cannot fertilize themselves. When they copulate, nudibranchs give to each other male gamete to fertilize their female gametes. When they can't find another partner, they have the ability to reproduce by parthenogenesis: thus, the nudibranch will give birth to clones. Some species like Goniobranchus tinctorius have the particularity to lose their penis after breeding, but a new one will grow back within hours! The eggs look like a colored ribbon with thousands of beads. Nudibranchs get their bright colors from their diet, and some species recycle toxins in their food to protect themselves from predators. Indeed, the fact that their ornaments are very colorful is called "aposematic" because it signals to predators their toxicity. Other species prefer to go unnoticed; their skin imitates perfectly the surrounding, which makes them almost invisible. They also only move at night. Finally, some are capable of autotomy which means they can amputate parts of their body to survive, which will regenerate thereafter.

Nudibranchs are very slow animals, for this reason they are called "sea slugs", and they generally live on the ocean floor. They move with a muscular foot that produces sticky mucus, but if attacked, they can escape by jumping and swimming a few meters, as Hexabranchus sanguineus, best known as the Spanish dancer. Some species like Glaucus atlanticus are pelagic and let themselves carried by the current, they can be found in open water or near the surface. Nudibranchs live directly on their food source, and mothers lay their eggs directly on their prey or nearby. Ces créatures vivent dans toutes les mers du monde, y compris en Antarctique ! Certaines espèces comme le Goniobranchus tinctorius ont la particularité de se séparer de leur pénis après la reproduction, pour en faire pousser un nouveau en quelques heures ! La ponte ressemble à un ruban coloré avec des milliers de perles. Les nudibranches tirent leurs couleurs vives de leur alimentation, et certaines espèces recyclent les toxines contenues dans leur nourriture pour se protéger des prédateurs. Les parures très voyantes ont une fonction dite « aposématique », qui permet de signaler aux prédateurs leur toxicité. D’autres espèces préfèrent passer inaperçues, leur survie tient à leur don de mimétisme avec le milieu ambiant, et elles ne se déplacent que la nuit. Enfin, certains sont capables d’autotomie, c’est-à-dire que pour survivre, ils peuvent s’amputer d’une partie de leur corps qui se régénérera par la suite. Animaux très lents, ce qui leur vaut leur nom de « limaces de mer », les nudibranches vivent généralement sur le fond océanique. Ils se déplacent grâce à un pied musculeux qui produit un mucus collant, mais lors d’une agression ils peuvent s’échapper en se projetant et en ondulant sur quelques mètres, comme Hexabranchus sanguineus, plus connu sous le nom de danseuse espagnole. Certaines espèces comme le Glaucus atlanticus sont pélagiques et se laissent dériver selon les courants, on peut en trouver en pleine eau ou près de la surface. Sasak people are originally from Lombok, where they represent the majority of the population. Ethnically related to the Balinese, they speak Sasak, a distinct language that has 9 different varieties. The Sasak language spoken in the Gilis is known as Gangga (Kutó-kuté). Sasak possesses a system of speech levels and, as Balinese and Javanese, social classes are reflected in lexical differences. In fact, Since the 14th century, Sasak society has been divided into castes. Intermarriage is allowed but a woman who marries a man of a lower caste loses her status. From the 16th century, the Sasak adopted a syncretic form of Islam (wetu telu), which blends Hindu-Bhuddist influences, Sunni Islam, animism and ancestral Gililife 50

worship. Today, Sasak are known for their traditional pottery, that is the famous technique of “turun temurun”, the typical architecture, namely the pile-built rice barn called “lumbung” and, of course, the “gendang beleq”, the Sasak version of the Balinese gamelan, a dance and music performance featuring drums, flutes and cymbals. The Tanjung Aan bay is huge with pristine, fine, white sand on one side, and on the other, a golden sandy beach with large grains. A central rock separates the two different beaches and you can climb it to admire the magnificent view ! Selong Blanak is a beautiful bay strewn with small shops. The main attraction is surfing but however, swimming remains possible. The waves are perfect for beginners. You will easily find somewhere to rent a board for a few hours. Selong Blanak est une très belle anse jonchée de petites échoppes. L’attraction principale est le surf mais la baignade reste, toutefois, possible. Les vagues sont parfaites pour les débutants. Vous trouverez facilement de quoi louer une planche pour quelques heures.

Warung is one of the words in Bahasa Indonesian you are likely to hear more often. Meaning “small restaurant”, in Indonesia and in Malaysia a warung is an institution that indicates local food at a cheap price and in a familiar atmosphere. This word does not indicate the speed the meal will be served and it can be a fast food restaurant or a slow pace one according to what you decide to eat. If you go for nasi campur (mix rice), you will just have to pick what you want from the dishes on display and eat it right away. If you go for the warung best sellers such as mie goreng (fried noodles), nasi goreng (fried rice) or soto ayam (chicken soup), you will have the time to crack into a couple of krupuk (rice crackers) and burn your lips sipping a teh manis panas (sweetened hot tea) before you get served. In case you are daring and order some Western dish on the menu, you may end up spending the whole day in the warung and eventually become a member of the local family who run the place!

METHOD - PREPARATION Mince finely the onions and garlic. In a big stove, warm the coconut oil then add the onions, let it fry. Add the garlic, salt and pepper, let it fry and stir with a spoon. Pour the rice in the stove and stir for a few seconds. Add now the water and the coconut milk, cover and let it boil for about 20 minutes, until all the water is gone. Emincer finement les oignons et l’ail. Dans une grande poêle, faire chauffer à feu doux l’huile de coco, puis ajouter les oignons, laisser dorer. Ajouter ensuite l’ail, le sel et le poivre, laisser rissoler quelques secondes en remuant avec une cuillère en bois. Verser le riz dans la poêle et remuer, le riz va nacrer au contact de l’huile. Ajouter maintenant l’eau et le lait de coco, couvrir puis laisser mijoter environ 20 minutes à feu doux, jusqu’à ce que l’eau se soit évaporée entièrement.

The coral mermaids Les sirènes de corail

id you know that mermaids are born in coral nests? They are only a few inches long and hide there all day. Sometimes they go out to play with colorful fish. They spend their childhood in coral reefs, and go into the open sea once they become adults, but nobody knows what they do there exactly. When they swim out of their nests, they disguise themselves as fish so they are not recognized by divers. These little fairies of the sea like to live quietly and never reveal themselves to us. Yet they like to be elegant, and fancy all that glitters. Sometimes they even steal jewelery worn by swimmers! One day I swam in the sea, having forgotten to remove my beautiful turquoise earrings. When I came out of the water, they were no longer there... These small mermaids had probably pilfered them from me to keep them in their coral nest! But even if they are little thieves, please do not disturb them. Corals are very fragile and if you touch them or lean on them, you risk breaking them and scaring these cunning little creatures... Saviez vous que les sirènes naissent dans des nids de corail ? Elles font à peine quelques centimètres et s’y cachent toute la journée en sortant parfois pour jouer avec les poissons multicolores. Elles passent leur enfance dans les récifs coralliens, et partent vers le grand large une fois devenues adultes, mais personne ne sait ce qu’elles y font. Quand elles sortent de leur nid, elles se déguisent en poissons pour ne pas être reconnues pas les plongeurs. Ces petites fées de la mer aiment vivre discrètement, et ne se révèlent jamais à nos yeux. Pourtant elles sont très coquettes, et aiment tout ce qui brille. Parfois, elles volent les bijoux que portent les nageuses ! Un jour alors que je me baignais, j’ai oublié de retirer mes belles boucles d’oreilles en turquoise. Quand je suis sortie de l’eau je ne les avais plus... C’est surement ces petites sirènes qui me les ont chapardées pour les garder dans leur nid de corail ! Mais même si ce sont de coquettes voleuses, ne les dérangez surtout pas. Le corail est très fragile, et il ne faut ni le toucher, ni s’appuyer dessus au risque de le briser et d’effrayer ces petites espiègles...

On Gili Air public boats leave to Lombok starting at 7:30am. Meno to Lombok, twice a day, at 8am and 3pm. And on Gili T starting at 7am until 5pm. Sometimes there are power cuts on the 3 islands but the resorts have generators.

INTERNET - WIFI Internet cafes are in abundance on Gili T- mainly on the developed east. On Gili Air there are 3 internet cafes and there are 2 on Meno (see map for locations). HEALTH - SANTE There are clinics on all three Gili Islands (see maps) offering basic treatments and medicines. For serious ailments there are hospitals (rumah sakit) and dentists in Lombok (see directory). IDR - RUPIAH You can change your foreign currency and pay by debit/

credit card in most dive centers and resort hotels, however, cash remains the only form of payment for most accommodation/food in The Gili's.
