THE GILI ISLANDS
CULTURE & HISTORY
The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature
Gililife 26
of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis
and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.
ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN
TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 28
corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of
crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-
GILI TRAWANGAN
ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 29 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE
MENO
Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday Gililife 30
within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resortwhere a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the true outdoorsmen- er, and women! On the island there is an ATM and bike rentals are available
GILI MENO
if you wish to explore the island on a silent two wheels. Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apa- no problem!!

GILI AIR
THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE
The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32
gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade
Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

SCUBADIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Gililife 34
Expect to swim with elegant white and black-tip sharks and friendly turtles, observe extravagant cephalopods and ghost pipe-fish hidden in plain sight and explore wrecks turned into the home of colourful fish schools! Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a soughtafter destination for muck diving.
There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SPECIES
This months' featured species
Hexabranchus Sanguineus
SPANISH DANCER
The world's largest nudibranch, the Spanish Dancer can measure up to 40cm. Its large bright red colour and unique swimming style are a beautiful sight in shallow reefs across the IndoPacific ocean and give the nudibranch its common name, because these features make it resemble to a skirt of a Flamenco dancer. This great visibility is not threatening to them, but it actually serves as
Gililife 36
a warning to its potential predators, as the Spanish Dancers, like many nudibranchs, is not palatable and sometimes releases a toxin when in danger. They mainly move by crawling, sensing smell and noise with their specialised front tentacules. They feed on sponges, soft corals and bryozoa and on poisonous jellyfish, from which they assimilate the venom to use it for their own protection.
ACTIVITIES
TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!
SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.
Gililife 38
Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES
A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE
FREEDIVING
Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.
Gililife 40
MORE GILI ISLAND
WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world
without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are
worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES
YOGA
GET CONNECTED
Gililife 42
It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.
Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!
ACTIVITIES
TREAT YOURSELF
SPA Gililife 44
There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.
MORE FUN ONLAND
OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

TRAVEL BY SEA
Tradition
beauty & adventure The Indonesian archipelago stretches out across the Southern Seas for thousands of km, connecting people and biodiversity over more than 20,000 islands. It is not surprising then that Indonesia has developed one of the world’s richest maritime cultures and a variety of vessels apt for all kinds of transport. Throughout history, boats have represented a mean of transport and a way of life, nurturing trade, cultural exchanges as well as wars and piracy, connecting
sailors, villagers, traders, explorers in a plethora of languages, customs and traditions. Still today, Indonesia is a place best explored by boat, a means of transport that allows to reach distant lands and hidden corners, serving the needs of fishermen, businessmen and tourists alike. From tiny outtrigger boats to huge ferries and majestic wooden ships, all kinds of boats cruise the waters of this magic land, where the Indian and the Pacific oceans meet and a home for unparalleled biodiversity.

Indonesian seas have always represented lanes of migration and trade and the development of boat-building traditions taps into a variety of cultures. Indonesia’s most traditional sails are square, also known as Tanjag, and are still used on small fishing boats. The triangular or “Lateen” sail is typical of Indian and Arab trading boats and was adopted by Indonesian sailors more than 1,000 years ago, when they were trading with China and Indians and Arabs were regularly travelling to Indonesia. Indonesian sailors started to combine square and triangular sails, eventually more and more opting for the latter because of better functionality. In fact, the tanjag or rectangular sails allowed to only sail before the wind, while the triangular one, thanks to the way it is affixed, permits to take the wind on both sides, thus increasingly the speed and potential of the ship.
The arrival of the Dutch marked the arrival of the European schooner, which influenced Sulawesi sailors, mainly Bugis, an ethnic group known for being avid sea travellers, traders and pirates. The Bugis adopted some design features more appropriate for long-distance sailing and, at the same time, the Dutch integrated some elements observed on pirates’ ships. This intertwining of cultures and designs gradually brought to the creation of the first Pinisi, namely Indonesia’s most famous medium-sized vessel, a two-masted wooden sailing ship featuring seven to eight sails (the rigging). The first prototype of pinisi was built in the mid 1800 by a European settled in Malaysia. The European and Indonesian sailing traditions kept influencing each other, and the first South-Sulawesi pinisi was built by the people of Ara around 1900. These prototypes strongly differ from today’s pinisi, especially for the height of the masts and the configuration of the space, which was mainly designed to store cargo. In the 1970s, Indonesia pinisis represented the world’s biggest fleet of sailing traders, which connected the whole archipelago. In the past 20 years, pinisis have regained popularity and this word nowadays refers to all medium-sized wooden vessel built locally.

Lambo
B
Almost all cargo boats in Indonesia’s major harbours today are lambos, a type of pinisi equipped with engines called PLM (perahu layar motor or motor sailing boats) with a load capacity of up to 300 tons. Lambos typically feature one mast, a main sail and a Genovese jib and are also used as tourist boats for liveaboards.
Kora kora Traditionally from Moluccas islands, kora-kora are narrow, low open boats of about 10 m of length. A bamboo platform supports the boat, together with long bamboo outriggers on each side. Kora-koras are designed to be paddled by 20 rowers with a covered thatched part for passengers and luggage. Some can be bigger, featuring up to 100 rowers. Recalling the shape of a Chinese Dragon Boat, they were used as a war vessel against the Dutch in the Banda islands in the 1600 century. Gililife 54

Pinisi
Indonesia's most famous medium-sized vessel, takes its name from the rigging of seven to eight sails. It is a two-masted sailing ship believed to descend from traditional Bugis and Makassar boat design combined with Dutch and European long-distance vessels. Used in the growing marine tourism industry, many pinisi today feature luxury sleeping cabins and large decks and are built according to tourists’ needs, resembling to medium-sized cruise ships but bearing a unique charm, heritage of a centenary boat-building tradition.

Klotok
Traditionally used to navigate on rivers and transport people and goods, Klotoks are also known as “water taxis” and are a typical feature of Indonesia’s traditional floating markets and national parks. The name refers to the noise of the motor and its size depends on its use, ranging from 2,5m small tourist boats to 17m houseboats. Most feature a roof and some provide sleeping and dining facilities.
There are various versions of proa or perahu in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, the name referring to the word “boat” in Malay (perahu), Javanese (prau) and some Philippines languages (paraw). It is a multihull boat featuring two parallel hulls of different lengths, the “vaka” is the longer one and the “ama” the shorter one, with the distinct feature that the stern and the bow can interchange at each tack. It is one of the oldest watercraft and was typically used for warfare because of its ability to reach high speed.
Jukung Originally from Bali and Kalimantan, jukung are small wooden outrigger boats traditionally used for fishing but also for transport in daily activities such as shopping or going to work. Featuring a “crab claw” triangular sail and highly decorated, these boats allow to gybe safely and are nowadays also made of HDPE (high density polyethylene) pipes, which greatly improves the boat’s buoyancy. Padewakang
Depicted on Borobudur bas-reliefs, padewakang typically featured a tanjak or rectangular sail. They were traditionally used in South Sulawesi as a fishing and trading boat, but were also war vessels for Bugis and Makassar people in the 1600 ad 1700, and were used to explore lands as far as South Philippines and North Australia. 57 Gililife

Top Tips for a better trip at Sea
It is extremely important to consider boat safety when travelling by sea in Indonesia, where sometimes boats are the only transport option. Here some important tips to keep your journey as safe as possible:
Size matters
Always go for bigger boats, they deal better in open water
Safety equipment
Verify the presence and location of safety equipment (ex. Jackets) and of safety exits
Avoid crowds
A crowded boat is less safe, do not hesitate to wait for the next (and less crowded boat!) and avoid travelling on public holidays

KAYU CAFE HEALTHY, AFFORDABLE & ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE! GILI TRAWANGAN Everyone on Gili Trawangan knows Kayu Cafe. With its recycled wood signs and furnishing, it is recognizable from afar and its perfectly baked cakes and healthy juices have a distinct taste that identify them immediately! Kayu Cafe is indeed already part of the history of Gili Trawangan; although most people may not realise it, it was the first business to bring the initiation of health-environmental awareness in the food industry at Gili Trawangan. “Kayu was birthed within a marriage and friendship that have faced challenges to be where we are now. None of us had a clue about setting up or running a restaurant. Throughout the years we learned so much to do things more gracefully and to prioritise our friendship while having a thriving business.” Rina, the owners said. Indeed, Kayu
Cafe was the first cafe that offered healthy green or fruit juices without water and sugar and the first one who cared about not using plastic bags/straws. Although many other similar businesses have sprouted on Gili T since its opening, Kayu Cafe remains a sure shot for your healthy all-day dining “We are sincerely happy that at the moment many other companies are doing the same thing or even better!” Rina added. Located on the main strip of Gili Trawangan, facing the turquoise water and with a view on Mount Rinjani, Kayu Cafe is composed of an air-conditioned main space at the ground floor and an open space second floor. Across the road, some tables and chairs on the beach complete the Cafe, giving guests the freedom to choose the atmosphere of their choice.
63 Gililife
GILI ZOOM Rina decided to open a Cafe where they could find all the yummy and healthy food she craved for and could not be found on the island at that time. After spending time daydreaming to have a nice place to sit with air-con, a good internet and a good option of food/drinks with her friends and colleagues, Rina decided to embrace an interesting opportunity. “I took tips from my coffee lovers and pastry expert friends, but I am not a restaurateur and I did not have much of a clue about restaurant business.” Rina said. “I had lived on the island for years at the time and really longed for green juices (without having to prepare
Gililife 64
it ourselves which is so tedious), good cakes (without having to bake it ourselves and get the temptation to eat the whole thing) and decent enough coffees.” she explained. “The week before we opened, we still had not got the menu ready and ended up putting the usual things that we normally cooked at home just to get the restaurant open. We thought we'd change the menu once we were more settle, but in fact a lot of the things still stay on the menu to this day. We have been overwhelmed by the market response since the first day we opened!” Rina added with a smile.
Offering a good variety of food and drinks and coffees, Kayu Cafe offer guests the possibility to have healthy food and drinks such as salads, falafels, raw bliss balls, green juices, smoothies and wheatgrass shots as well as comfort food and drinks such as full english breakfast, heavy scandinavian cakes and decent coffees. At Kayu Cafe the focus is on different perspectives around health and the team strives for balance and avoids rigidity. Pioneers as an eco-friendly business in Gili T., they never used any plastic bags, plastic take away containers or plastic straws since the opening day and it will stay that way. “We want to have a business that brings blessings to everything that we touch. Our guests, our staff, the community, the earth and the co-founders. Rina said. Gililife Recommends... Ginger Cheesecake Get healthy and stay eco! Shop at Kayu Cafe! BALE SAMPAN YOUR ISLAND HOME GILI TRAWANGAN
When picking the hotel for your much needed holiday, it is worth to consider small scale properties, which are increasingly gaining the place they deserve on the international market. What is so attracting about small boutique hotels and why would you choose this accommodation option instead of a big resort featuring an array of activities and facilities? First and mostly, the more intimate setting offered by small hotels creates a more personal feel and a more attentive customer service. Guests become part of the family and specific needs and requirements are better taken care of. A customized experience and a homely feeling is for many worth much more than a stay in a chain resort where guests are nothing but numbers. In addition, small boutique hotels are often characterised by a unique
design and identity such as exclusive amenities and less impersonal furnishing, which contribute to make guests feel at home. Local handicrafts and decorations add up to the cultural experience, which is enhanced when the property also features a café and a restaurant that can bridge gaps between visitors’ culture and local culinary traditions and offer an extra care for guests’ food cravings and needs. Last but not least, independently owned hotels have more freedom, and are able to adapt their offer to the latest trends and to guests’ wishes. Bale Sampan in Gili Trawangan is the ideal small scale hotel that caters for those who are seeking for a personalised yet exotic holiday and feel at home away from home!
67 Gililife
GILI ZOOM Cozy, homely and experienced Bale Sampan is an established presence in Gili Trawangan, where it has been running for 10 years. During this time, the island has greatly developed and changed, as has the profile of the travellers visiting this corner of paradise. Bale Sampan’s four owners have been able to grow with this development, adapting their style to new tastes and trends and gradually and unpretentiously adding features to make the hotel more comfortable and welcoming. Today, Bale Sampan has 13 rooms, and guest can choose to be surrounded by a green quiet garden or to have a privileged view over the pool and the ocean. The recent big renovation has introduced a more relaxing colour scheme, new modern amenities and the beachfront property
Gililife 68
also features a healthy café famous for its baguettes and smoothies. Bale Sampan prides itself to be an environmentally conscious property. No plastic bottles or straws are available, the hotel is one of Trawangan water refill stations as well as a host of regular beach clean ups and an active member of the network of businesses composting with Gili Eco Trust. The revamp works have not taken away the property’s homely feeling, which is enhanced by the dynamic and faithful team members such as Rudy, the local manager, and Atun and Mita at the café. No wonder then if there are many returning and long term guests – when you feel at home, it is hard to leave and you need to come back!
Sampan Cafe Have a break from the beach and stop by at Sampan Café! Open from early morning to afternoon, the Café offers a variety of healthy meals and drinks made with fresh and nutritious locally sourced ingredients. Start your day with one of the many breakfast options, indulging in a great cup of coffee and in Sampan’s famous peanut butter Oreo brownies. The island-wide fame for their baguettes and salads is well deserved, as guests can customize their meal by choosing the filling and even the type of bread they want. The choice is wide and do not be shy to put the mouthwatering Sampan steak or juicy honey leg ham in your baguette! Craving for an afternoon snack? Gili Life recommends Sampan homemade chocolate brownies with a fresh juice smoothie or, why not, a glass of wine!

Gililife Recommends... Zouq’s menu is so wide and diverse that you’ll need to go several times to enjoy all it has to offer. Specialised in seafood barbecues, the restaurant also serves a wide range of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options and probably Gili T’s widest range of healthy juices and smoothies. GILI FRUIT
TAMARIND If you in search for shade to protect you from the Gili islands’ bright and strong sun, a Tamarind tree is what you are looking for. Being a strong and resistant tree that can grow on any soil, tamarinds are one of the few large trees that grow on this archipelago, where they make great shade thanks to their thick foliage and big size. Indeed, tamarind trees can grow up to 18 metres and are evergreen, which means their wide crown is always full of tiny bright green leaves, clustered on the tree’s dropping branches. The tamarind fruit is a pod contained in a hard shell of about 10-12 cm. It has a sweet and sour taste and a juicy pulp.
HEALTH BENEFITS The fruit is good treatment for fever, great laxative, and digestive properties Direct application of the pulp is used to treat inflammations and rheumatisms Seeds are used to treat diarrhea Leaves and flowers used for decocts against conjunctivitis and hemorrhoids The bark is used as a remedy for colic

RECIPE
INGREDIENTS 1½ cup plain yogurt 6 tblsp fresh lemon juice 6 tblsp honey 6 tblsp extra-virgin olive oil ¼ cup tamarind concentrate 3 tbsp chopped fresh ginger 1 tblsp cumin seeds 3½ cups cabbage 3 cucumbers 3 cups bean sprouts 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves ½ cup green onions
CUCUMBER CABBAGE SALAD WITH TAMARIND DRESSING
This fresh and slightly spicy salad is ideal to cool down on Gili’s hot days and to accompany any rice and meat dishes. The sour taste of the tamarind combined with the strong taste of cumin give it a powerful kick, softened by the touch of honey and olive oil.
PREPARATION • Mix the yoghurt, lemon juice, honey, olive oil, tamarind, ginger and seeds in a small bowl • Add salt and pepper to taste • In a large bowl, place the sliced cabbage, the cucumbers cut in long slices, the bean sprouts, the cilantro and the finely sliced green onions
• Add the dressing and toss Gililife 86
