EDITO ISSUE No. 51 MAY 2018 Bulan puasa, as month of Ramadan is known in Bahasa Indonesia, begins on May 15th on the rising of the new Moon. Gili Life would like to wish a blessed Ramadan to all our Muslim friends and to offer an overview of this fundamental month of worship to all our international friends who are visiting Indonesia, the country in the world with the largest Muslim population. During this month, you may hear more often the call for prayer (adhān) resounding across the islands. The call from the mosque can be heard from the village to the beach and everywhere else on the island, reminding locals to honour God and visitors to respect local culture. In this issue we also discover havens of peace, well-being and creativity nestled in the Gili’s Islands. Breathe peace and nature at Breathe Villas in Meno, and learn about and taste authentic Indonesian cuisine at Sunny Warung in Gili Air!

THE GILI ISLANDS
CULTURE & HISTORY
The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature
Gililife 24
of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis
and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.
ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN
TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 26
corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of
crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-
GILI TRAWANGAN
ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 27 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE
MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle, where time seems Gililife 28
to bend and life seems to slow down. Out of the three Gili’s, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by big crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet
GILI MENO
interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR
THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE
The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 30
gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade
Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. An exceptional MARINE WORLD FULL OF

SCUBADIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Gililife 32
Expect to swim with elegant white and black-tip sharks and friendly turtles, observe extravagant cephalopods and ghost pipe-fish hidden in plain sight and explore wrecks turned into the home of colourful fish schools! Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a soughtafter destination for muck diving.
There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SPECIES
This months featured species
The
SCORPION FISH
Featuring over 200 species, the family of Scorpionidae includes venomous lionfish and other marine species known for impressing camouflage techniques that allow them to perfectly blend with the sea bottom. The most venomous species is the Pterois volitans. Species of scorpion fish typically hide in the reef at 2 to 50mt of depth and can be found in tropical waters across the world. They use camouflage to ambush their prey, which they attack by stunning them with their venom.
Gililife 34
WATCH OUT... Contact with the venomonous spines on a scorpion fish cause severe pain and poisoning, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, cramps, shortness of breath, abnormal heart rythms, fainting, paralysis and even death. The intensity varies and depends on the amount of venom the victim is exposed to. Be careful because it camouflages very well in the hidden crevices.
ACTIVITIES
TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!
SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.
Gililife 36
Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of revallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.
ACTIVITIES
A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE
FREEDIVING
Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.
Gililife 38
MORE GILI ISLAND
WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world
without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are
worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES
YOGA
GET CONNECTED
Gililife 40
It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.
Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!
ACTIVITIES
TREAT YOURSELF
SPA Gililife 42
There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.
MORE FUN ONLAND
OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

ramadan in
indonesia With the rising of the New Moon on May 15th, Muslims across the world will start a month long of fasting known as Ramadan. Ramadan is a time for prayer and reflection, a period of the year in which Muslims challenge their daily routine to be closer to human sufferings and celebrate God. According to religious tradition, this months commemorates the revelation of the Qur’an to Prophet Mohammed, thus representing a month of spiritual reflection during which Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and engaging in sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk. Over this month, Islam devotees are also encouraged to read the entire Qur'an and to avoid sinful behaviours such as fighting and gossiping. Elders, children, pregnant and menstruating women and people who are sick or are travelling are exempted from fasting, but everybody gathers on the last day to celebrate Eid-alFitr, one of Islam's most important festivity.
With almost 90% of its 250 million citizens practicing Islam, Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country and it is no wonder then that Ramadan, or bulan puasa as it is locally known, is widely observed. The worship of Ramadan reflects Indonesia’s diversity and every Muslim region or community in Indonesia has its own traditions for the month of Ramadan, according to the religious fervour and currents present in the area. In Lombok and the Gili Islands, during Ramadan a slower rhythm of activities can be felt, as some local restaurants are closed during the day and local people tend to move less. Party are suspended for the whole period, but besides that most remains more or less the same. Indeed, most tourist-related activities such as boat timetables, diving or yoga classes are not affected; food can be easily found at any time of the day in the Gili’s and in major restaurants in Lombok, especially in tourist areas. Be aware that some restaurants close for sunset to allow Muslim employees to break the fasting (buka puasa). 49 Gililife

THE MOSQUE A PLACE OF WORSHIP A mosque, meaning “place of prostration” in Arabic (masjid) is a place for worship in Islam
Masjid Al Haram, Mecca
Gililife 50
Bayan Beleq Mosque, Lombok Image By: Torbenbrinker
The oldest mosque in the world is the Masjid alHaram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which Islamic scholars believed it was constructed by Ibrahim around 2130 BC. In Indonesia, mosques started to be built much later. The oldest surviving mosque in Indonesia is the Great Mosque of Demak, Java, which dates the 15th century. It differs from more recent mosques because it is made of timber and it does not feature a dome, which appeared in Indonesian mosques only from the 19th century. Built by an Islamic missionary in the 16th century, the Bayan Beleq Mosque is the oldest mosque in Lombok. It has bedek [woven bamboo] walls and is built on stone foundation. It is located around 80 km from Mataram and is part of a very interesting and meaningful religious site worth a visit. In the Gilis, Islam was brought by its first settlers, who came from Sulawesi and built the first mosque in Gili Air around 80 years ago. Today, there is at least one mosque in every one of the three Gilis.
Gili Trawangan Mosque Image By: Magul
In the Gilis, non-Muslims are allowed to enter mosques provided that they visit outside prayer times and they respect the place and the people inside it. During Ramadan, it is a sign of respect to refrain from eating, drinking and smoking in proximity of the mosque. 51 Gililife

RESPECT DURING RAMADAN
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION DRESS
Swimwear is fine on the beach, but when walking in the streets (especially in the village) cover up.
FOOD & DRINK
Try to avoid eating in the streets and public areas during the daytime. Consume food and drinks in a restaurant, or out of sight where possible.
SMOKING
If you wish to smoke during the daytime be descreet, and try not to smoke around local people.
PARTIES

BREATHE VILLA RUSTIC MINIMALISM GILI MENO Once scarcely populated tropical atolls, the three Gili’s islands off Lombok’s north-west coast are now touristic destinations offering accommodation options and activities for all kinds of visitors and budgets. Although the laid-back vibe and transparent waters remain some of the islands’ most loved features, it is true that the tourist development has impacted the green areas of the island, which are more and more rare. Gili Meno is certainly the one of the three Gili’s that has preserved its natural environment the most. Large patches of green land, long white sandy beaches and limited touristic development remain the main characteristic of this tiny island sandwiched between more hectic and populated Gili Air and Trawangan.
With its luscious garden, spacious villas and rustic minimalist interior design, Breathe Villas is certainly the best choice if you are looking to plunge in a full tropical experience without renouncing to modern amenities and a personalised service. Owners Hannah and Adrien have been living on the island for a few years managing Gili Meno Divers, and their passion for island life can be breathed in every corner of their peaceful and comfortable property. Spacious, green and homely, Breathe Villas is the place where to relax and recharge at your own pace, with friendly hosts who know the islands inside out and transmit the love for Nature and a conscious lifestyle to their guests. 59 Gililife
GILI ZOOM Located in the centre of the island, next to a coconut plantation, Breathe Villas is a compound of 4 one-bedroom villas surrounded by a green tropical garden offering privacy and comfort in simple yet very well curated style. The couple fully engaged in the whole creation process, personally designing and making a lot of the furniture in the villas and their personal touch is reflected in the property landscape and interior design. “We decided to recycle and re-use local materials and make the best of our skills! We wanted Breathe Villas to be more sustainable and at the same time convey our personal touch.” Hannah said. Recycled wood, large use of natural materials and great attention to details provide guests with an ecofriendly and comfortable living space
Gililife 60
where to relax after a day exploring the island or where to spend the whole day without feeling enclosed. Choose the villas with plunge pool if you like to refreshen on the spot or opt for the one without if you prefer a larger green space. In both cases, a swing, beanbags and a large comfy sofa are there for you to enjoy the comfort and privacy of the villas without being surrounded by concrete walls. “We wanted to create an oasis, a place to breathe, relax and feel at home.” Adrian added. The beautiful tropical garden is a big part of the couple’s work and keeps evolving. Climbing passion fruits, guava, mango, grape and papaya trees, heliconias and hibiscus create a homely magical space where guests can settle in and breathe the authentic tropical vibe.
Soon developing a light bites menu and a yoga space, Breathe Villas offers guests the freedom to choose from a variety of breakfast options, including home-made bread, waffles, jams and vegan options. Prefer a la carte? On a honeymoon? Hannah, Adrien and dedicated staff Ashari and Gede Sastra will pamper you with any delight you may wish for on your tropical stay!

The idea was to share with the world the best food Indonesia has to offer, making it affordable, fun and also take into consideration the tastes of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free guests. It was also important to follow Muslim concepts and rules in the preparation of food items. Folllowing his dream, Hero opened the small warung in the centre north of Gili Air about one year ago, introducing at the same time cooking classes to complement the offer. One year on, Sunny Warung is undoubtedly the most successful and most delicious warung on the island. Located close to Gili Matiki and Rumah
