THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 20

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 22

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 23 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island Gililife 24

where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the

GILI MENO

true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apano problem!!

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 26

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

SPECIES

This months' featured species

'Chelonia mydas' Commonly known as

GREEN SEa TURTLE

This gentle and herbivore marine reptile is one of the reasons why many people come to the Gilis. Their beautiful appearance, graceful swimming style and friendliness are some of the characteristics that make sea turtles one of the most loved marine animals. Named after the greenish colour of their skin, green sea turtles are among the largest sea turtles in the world. They can weigh up to 300 kg and have a carapace of more than 1,5mt! Green Sea Turtles can be found across the world's tropical waters, typically migrating from feeding sites to nesting grounds. They meet to mate every 2-4 years in shallow waters and lay their eggs on sandy beaches, often the same beach they were born on.

Gililife 30

Unlike most sea turtles, Chelonia mydas are herbivores and feed on sea grass and weeds. Juveniles also feed on small invertebrates such as sponges and jellyfish. Green Turtles are an endangered species, but they keep being hunted for their eggs and meat. Take a visit to the Turtle Nursery in Gili Meno and in Gili Trawangan!

DID YOU KNOW... Green sea turtles are freediving champions and can hold their breath for hours at a time. Being cold-blooded, the water temperature affects the ability to hold their breath and they can stay longer in cold water.

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 32

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 36

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 38

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

A BRIEF

INSIGHT Gililife 46

As travelling becomes accessible to more and more people, more and more locations across the world are vulnerable to the impact of mass tourism, which has undoubtfully a strong impact on the environment and can influence forever local biodiversity, local culture and the experience of future visitors. Indonesia and the Gili Islands are no exception and the environment has changed dramatically due to massive tourismrelated investments and the increasing presence of international visitors. Luckily, environmental awareness is spreading and eco-travel is now a reality; many businesses are adopting eco-friendly practices on their premises and sustainable development projects are being implemented in some hotspots across the archipelago. Indeed, sustainable travel does not only preserve the natural environment for the benefit of future tourists, but it preserves the environment in order to meet the current and future needs of the local community and funds conservation. In addition, it incorporates the activities of tourists and travel companies into the local economy in order to empower local businesses and traditions. You can also make a difference by being a conscious traveller by respecting a few tips that will make your travel experience great for you as well as for the place you are visiting! 47 Gililife

GILIs'

Limited water and power supply as well as the lack of a reliable waste management system are some of the factors that demand extra attention for businesses and travellers in the Gili islands. More

and more properties are adopting an environmentally friendly approach, carrying out activities that benefit the natural environment. Beach cleanups are organised regularly across the three islands and initiatives such as “Dive against Debris allow divers to contribute to cleaning the underwater world around the Gili islands. Organisations such as the Gili Eco Trust collaborate with local businesses on several activities

aimed at preserving the environment across the Gilis. Make your choice wisely when choosing where to eat, dive and sleep. Opt for places where waste is separated, no plastic is used and that are involved in conservation and recycling activities. You can also actively be involved by taking part in one of the many clean ups, enquire at your hotel or at the dive centre of your choice! Because We Care!

A lot of development in Asia doesn’t take care of the environment and it doesn’t cooperate with the local people. REGIONS

More information on www.eco-regions.co.id

An EcoRegion is defined as a geographical area where environmental protection, economic sustainability, social inclusion and spiritual harmony are in balance, ensuring that the resource use meets the needs of the community, government, investors and visitors while preserving the environment and developing the economy for

future generations. In collaboration with the Indonesian Government, Eco Regions Indonesia has established two EcoRegions in the area around the Gili Islands: Tanjung Ringgit EcoRegion (3,000+ ha) on south east Lombok and Eight Islands EcoRegion (20,000+ ha) on NW Sumbawa. An important aspect of the concept is its effect

on regional economic development, which is a key goal of President Jokowi. By creating green rules that attract private partners as well as soft funding from governments and green funds, a large regional economic regeneration can be created in each EcoRegion. The project encompasses sustainable policies regarding landscape design, community empowerment as well as guidelines to businesses for the sourced materials and practices. No motorized vehicles, plastic or unnecessary packaging are allowed in the Eco-Regions, which will also become a KEK, or special economic zone, a model that create environmental protection for large tracts of land and create a platform for green investment, introducing a variety of benefits such as tax holidays, reduction of import duties, longer visas, less restrictions on setting up businesses etc.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL 1. DO NOT THROW ANYTHING IN THE TOILET

Non-organic waste will fill septic tanks causing grey water to flow into the land & sea. This will increase pollution and kill our fragile underwater eco-system.

2. REFIL YOUR BOTTLE & SAVE WATER

Help us recycle plastic by re-using your water bottle with a refil. The Gili Islands have limited fresh water supplies, so please turn water off when you are not using it.

Collecting sea shells & corals, walking on, and touching reefs increases beach erosion

Enjoy Gili Reefs by watching & protecting. Do not take anything from the beach or ocean.

5. DO NOT THROW CIGARETTES ON THE FLOOR DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS OR STRAWS

Plastic is not biodegradable. Re-use your bags or buy a re-useable bag and keep it with you. And do not use plastic straws unless you absolutely need it.

Gililife 52

6. DO NOT COLLECT CORAL OR SEA SHELLS FROM THE OCEAN OR THE BEACH They are living animals, and taking them from their environment will kill them. Even if coral looks dead or white these pieces eventually become sand. Collecting anything from the beach will increase beach erosion.

Follow these simple rules during your stay...

3. ALWAYS SWITCH OFF AC, FAN & LIGHTS WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR ROOM

Electricity comes from petrol generators on the Gilis'. Do not waste energy.

7. DO NOT TOUCH OR WALK ON THE REEF DO NOT DROP ANCHOR ON FRAGILE LIVING CORAL REEFS

Coral and other animals are very fragile organisms which grow very slowly. Interacting with the oceans ecosystem will damage it. Respect their space and watch from a distance. An anchor dropped will destroy many of these corals and won't allow the reef to recover.

4. THROW RUBBISH IN THE BINS PROVIDED

Encourage responsible behaviour by walking a few extra steps to collect rubbish and throw it in a bin. Green for organic, Blue for paper, Yellow for the rest

8. CHOOSE HEALTHY LOOKING HORSES

Join Gili Eco Trusts actions for animal care, such as: free horse clinics and free cat serilization clinics. They need your skills, energy, and financial help.

GILI ZOOM Gililife 58

BALI WAKE PARK WAKEBOARDING & MUCH MORE FUN! SOUTH KUTA, BALI Imagine yourself being propelled over the water skipping along on a board for as long as you want almost like riding an infinite wave, except there is no wave. Now imagine yourself going from completely still to 32 kilometers an hour in almost no time on that board. Add in some rails, ramps and throw in some aerial tricks for good measure and you have the very essence of what it's like to wakeboard at Bali Wake Park! For those of you unfamiliar with wakeboarding, it's essentially what would happen if snowboarding and waterskiing had a lovechild out of wedlock. You're planing over the water, much like you would if you were on skis, but locked into a board with bindings as if you were on a snowboard. Wise men have

said that both snowboarding and wakeboarding are so similar, that they're like the bastard brothers of board sports. The motion of digging in the rail of the board is similar and the tricks are often interchangeable, the only real difference is that snowboarding requires gravity to produce kinetic energy and speed whereas wakeboarders are propelled by a handle. In both, you're locked into your board which gives you a lot more control of your board which unlocks a lot of potential for tricks, but it also makes it impossible to bail out when things don't go as planned. So much like the tricks, the wipeouts are startlingly similar, only in wakeboarding, you get to fall on water instead of snow... or ice. 59 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Located by Benoa Harbour, Bali Wake Park is easily accessible from anywhere on the island. It includes a pool with a bar and features a restaurant: Made's Warung, a well-known chain of restaurants and sacred place in Bali culinary scene, serving all sorts of favorites from traditional Indonesian dishes to croquets and burgers. The park also features a lush lawn covered with plenty of beanbags to bathe in the sun's rays as well as a trampoline and a sand pit for the amusement of smaller children. The coup de grace of the park is their full sized cable system. It's one of the bigger ones in the world, propelling up to eight riders simultaneously at a cool 32 kilometers an hour. If you've never

Gililife 60

tried wakeboarding before, expect to fall a few times by the dock, then progress to falling on the corners before eventually being able to do laps in the most satisfying way. Once you get this far, congratulations, you can now wakeboard. For the more advanced riders (or beginners with grit), there are a host of features to enjoy. Expect rails to board slide on, kickers that throw you into the air, and transfer rails, which are essentially kickers that throw you onto rails. The park provides all safety equipment and basic boards and skis with the purchase of a pass which you run from 1-hour to the whole day, to weekly passes. If you feel like you want something more advanced, the park has a full arsenal of rental boards at your disposal!

Bali Wake Park has something for everyone. If you don't want to ride, you can have a swim, tan and enjoy beers/cocktails by the pool. If you want to ride, the park is a great place to learn how to wakeboard and get your balance worked out. For more advanced riders, they have several feature options and kickers that throw you onto rails and such. Wakeboarders ride in super clear warm tropical water and get a buggy ride back to the start dock, saving the long walk should they fall! Beginners can learn a new skill because once you know how to wakeboard at a cable park, you pretty much know how to ride behind a boat. It's like getting a degree in waterskiing and you'll probably pick up some snowboarding tricks too. Kids can hit the trampoline and sand box or wakeboard if they're big enough. And those wanting to chill have an excellent place to kick back and relax. The park hosts King of Benoa, a yearly international wakeboarding competition, where the best riders in the world come specifically to compete on the park's features. OCEANS 5 DIVING FOR EVERYONE! GILI AIR

There is nothing peculiar about three boys in their 20s backpacking throughout Southeast Asia for some diving, except if one of them is affected by cerebral palsy (CP), a condition that affects movements and coordination. Jeppe's movement disorders were caused by lack of oxygen during birth, but this has not stopped him from developing a passion for travelling. Chaperoned by his two helpers and great friends, Jeppe has travelled throughout South America, he has attended Burning Man festival and the Paralympic games. Jeppe, Soren and Andreas arrived in Gili Air at Oceans 5 at the end of 2014, attracted by the DDI (Disable Divers International) program offered by this dive centre. Disable Divers International (DDI) states that “Scuba diving has shown

numerous advantages as a social and physical rehabilitation of disabled individuals, allowing them to interact in a near weightless state, with many feeling that the normal obstacles and restrictions their disability gives them on land, disappears in water when given the right equipment and training.” However, travelling with a person affected by CP requires additional care and planning, and most of all facilities able to cater for some specific needs in terms of movement and activities. Escorted by qualified DDI instructors, Jeppe could dive up to 8mt, enjoying a freedom of movement he has never experienced on land and an experience that few people affected by CP can dream of. ….But it was possible at Oceans 5 Gili Air, where diving is really for everyone!

63 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Oceans 5 is the brainchild of Sander, a former dive instructor and a passionate about travelling who decided to stop in Gili Air and open a dive centre that would offer all trainings, across different types of divers. In less than 10 years, Oceans 5 has become the largest dive centre on the island, gaining a reputation for its focus on instructors' training and development. It is now specialised in training specialized divers, as well as marine biologists and disable people! Oceans 5 actively takes part in conservation activities and has an ongoing collaboration with Gili Shark Conservation Project, a training program focussed on the monitoring and the protection of the shark population around the Gili islands, in which

Gililife 64

Oceans 5 instructors and DM get trained in shark conservation and education. The Resort developed gradually and the 100 year old joglo from Java that makes the central office is now surrounded by a fully integrated facility. The design by Dayat gives its due importance to communal spaces, making large use of big trees to maximise shade. Different categories of bungalows cater for all types of travellers and the convenient location facing the harbour makes sure you will always know what's going on the island. The collaboration with Coffee&Thyme adds a touch of style to the whole experience, guaranteeing high-quality, fresh delicious food throughout your stay and...the best coffee on Gili Air!

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was adopted in 2006. Its purpose of the CRPD is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. At Oceans 5, this convention is honored by the experienced instructors and the design of the space, where there are no limitations, there are ramps everywhere and the pool has some shallow parts.

“Because disabled diving is so different from person to person, the only way to improve as a diving center is to get more experienced diving with different types of disabled people.” said Søren, one of Jeppe's helpers. “I liked diving with O5 because they felt confident diving with Jeppe. That made us feel better in the water (as well as on land); the conditions and facilities, combined with all the helpful people from the O5 crew, made the weeks there less physically exhausting for Andreas and I.” he added.

BLUE LOTUS SPA OCEAN VIEW HEALING TRADITION & ROYAL BEAUTY GILI AIR Massage and beauty treatments are an intrinsic part of Indonesian culture. Carvings in Borobudur, Java's ancient Buddhist site, depict scenes of massages, and historical records show that Indonesian royalties were fond of beauty treatments. Body masks and scrubs were the royal princesses' favourites, typically used to whiten and tighten the skin. The most popular, still widely practiced today, was the lulur, a type of body scrubbing made with a blend of spices and herbs among which coffee powder, avocado and green tea, which makes the skin healthy and protects it from diseases. There are generally two types of Indonesian massage. Pijit focuses on the muscles, while urut is a more therapeutic type of massage and works deeper; its purpose is to

heal and improve blood circulation and is often used to treat injuries. The massage practitioner is known as tukang pijit urut and has great knowledge of anatomy and pressure points inherited from Chinese Medicine and Indian Ayurveda. In the villages, the healer or therapist is usually an old woman, who is often specialized in women's treatments after pregnancies. In the Gili islands, the most common massages is the Balinese, along with the Lombok/Sasak massage. Balinese massage is a blend of Shatzu and Indian massage and is characterized by hands cupping, joint cracking and skin rolling. Sasak massage is a bit stronger but works on the same lines and reflexology points. Both alleviate tiredness and stimulate blood circulation. 67 Gililife

GILI ZOOM After 12 years gaining experience in high-end spas around the world, Made returned to Indonesia, and opened her first business in Gili Trawangan, where she started to combine the knowledge acquired in many forms of spa treatments using different techniques from the various regions she had been training in. In 2013 she moved to Gili Air, where she opened Blue Lotus Spa, a beachfront beauty parlor located 5 minutes walk from the harbour and from the island's main strip. “It is my quest to make the Blue Lotus Spa the best in the region,” said Made. “In doing so, I am continually seeking out the very latest in natural beauty products, techniques and

Gililife 68

treatments.” Indeed, Blue Lotus offers professional spa treatments using natural products and, with views to the ocean and the calming sound of the waves, it is the place in Gili Air where to experience total relaxation and pampering to nourish both the body and the mind. Considered Indonesia's long massage and beauty treatments tradition, regular spa treatments are a “must do” in order to relax during your time away from the daily grind. A great massage and/ or a facial is the perfect way to end a day of snorkelling, diving, swimming and exploring the wonders of the Gili Islands. A well-executed massage will also deliver a wonderful night’s sleep with a refreshing start to the next day.

Gili Life Recommends: Lotus Signature Massage: Encompassing both Asian and European techniques with natural oils and creams delivering softness and smoothness to the skin and a total feeling of wellbeing.

Hot Stone Massage: Natural therapy in which warmed stones are positioned on parts of the receiver's body. The stones used are typically river rocks or other very smooth surfaced stones made of basalt. Heated in sanitizing water before being used, these stones have high iron content in basalt, which helps the stones retain heat during the massage. Hot stone massages are beneficial on both physical and psychological levels. (Always check with your doctor before getting a hot stone massage; individuals with certain conditions including pregnant women and people with high blood pressure are advised to avoid this type of therapy.)

In Lombok and the Gilis, the most popular meat used for sate is chicken or beef, but also seafood versions can be found. GILI FRUIT

ROSE APPLE The Rose Apple, locally known as Jambu Air, is a small pear-shaped fruit that can be white, yellow, orange or red in colour. The skin is thin and smooth to touch, and the flesh is firm and scented. When freshly picked, the texture is crunchy as an apple, and this is probably where its common name comes from: scented like a rose and crunchy like an apple. The Rose Apple is the fruit produced by Syzygium samarangense, large trees that can grow up to 12 metres and that bear beautiful white flowers. They have a distinct sour taste and can be eaten raw, but they are mainly prepared into jellies and jams. Native to the East Indies and the Malay Peninsula, rose apples grow in tropical climate and can be found in India and in in Central and South America. Although it prefers moist soil, in can grow in dry areas, provided that is irrigated well.

HEALTH BENEFITS • High fiber content contributes to lower cholesterol levels and thus prevents cardiovascular problems such as strokes and heart attacks; • Rose Apple decoctions have been traditionally used as diuretics to clean the liver and the kidneys; • Jambosine has been proved effective in regulating blood sugar levels, and it can help control diabetes; • Rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin A, Rose Apples boost the immune system against infections and inflammations. RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

ROSE APPLE RUJAK

4-5 Rose Apple (Jambu Air) 2 tbsp sugar 2 sliced red hot chillies (sliced) 1/2 tbsp shrimp paste 3 tsp soy sauce (kecap asin) 1/2 tsp sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)

Rujak is a traditional fruit salad seasoned with sweet and sours soy sauce. Typically sold by street sellers in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, it comes in different variations according to the season and fruits available in that area. In colloquial language, “rujak” or “rojak” also means “mixture”; people can refer to a situation or a place to be “rujak”, meaning there is “a bit of everything”.

PREPARATION Clean and cut the Rose Apple into 4. Remove the top part and the core; Over the stove, slightly burn the shrimp paste; In a small bowl, add the sugar and add the shrimp paste and the sliced chillies; Add 1/2 tsp sweet soy and 3 tsp soy sauce; Smash the shrimp paste with fork and mix well. Add peanuts if the mood takes you.
