THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 20

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 22

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 23 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island Gililife 24

where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the

GILI MENO

true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apano problem!!

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 26

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 30

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 32

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 34

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 36

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

Gili beach bum hotel ART & FUN BY THE BEACH GILI TRAWANGAN Street art is often associated to urban areas, where in many cases it has been considered vandalism and fought against. In most cities, street artists have been looked upon as a problem and not as a resource, and uncountable regulations have been introduced by municipalities across the world to limit this phenomenon of “social disturbance. It is not long since this form of art has entered galleries and museums, become the focus of large art festivals and brought to fame amazing artists who made their first steps painting trains and walls illegally. Today, many urban regeneration projects include street art and graffiti; enlightened municipalities offer walls to artists, aware that their work will make the neighbourhood a happier place to live in. Indeed, street art transforms

the outdoor urban space into an open-air gallery, with the potential to attract people from outside who come to visit the area to explore artwork hidden in the city's alleys and forgotten buildings. Discovering the city's art beyond its ancient cultural heritage and historical monuments is a beautiful way to celebrate a city's contemporary artistic culture. We don't have cities in the Gilis, but more and more concrete buildings have been built and many properties look the same. However, there is a place in Gili Trawangan where street art is everywhere. Gili Beach Bum is an unique example of an art cafe & hostel where a dynamic creative essence can be breathed in all its corners, expressing local and Western street artists' creativity. 45 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Opened in 2012 by five friends and formerly known as “Gili Hostel, Gili Beach Bum has been focussed on art since its early beginnings. The aim was to create a colourful, arty and loving space for young travellers and art & fun lovers. It started with a few rooms and developed into an interesting example of an art hostel & cafe, thanks to the impressive artwork by local artist Daniel Emet and his Lombok crew and the involvement of many artists visiting the place. The result is an incredible space where art is literally everywhere. Each room is decorated with a unique piece and murals cover walls, doors and furniture across the property. Bright colours and round shapes convey a tropical, sunny, colourful and trippy mood,

Gililife 46

which spills on the rooftop and in the funky pool bar, where guests can enjoy healthy breakfasts, try a yoga class or a powerful cocktail according to the mood, always surrounded by art and like-minded people. Leave a message on the writing wall and guess the author of the quotes written behind the doors! Across the road is Lava Bar, a popular laid-back beach bar part of Gili Beach Bum where the funkiest theme parties of the island take place and where during the day you can enjoy the white sandy beach or pick any watersport of your choice. Explore Gili Beach Bum, where you will discover that you don't need a city to have street art, just a surface and creative minds!

Gili Beach Bum & Lava Bar are also famous for their invaluable staff, a passionate long-term team that has grown with the property, becoming experts in entertainment and hospitality. No detail is overlooked by Yayan, the bar manager, who ensures all runs smoothly behind and in front of the counter! Alan's great taste for music transforms Lava bar in the island's best dancefloor and Rina, the head of reception and part of the team since its first steps, is there to make sure all is well taken care of. “This is just a step to a greater future” said Natalie, the previous manager.

“I have always striven to empower the staff, passing to them that knowledge and motivation to fulfil their capacities and push them to dream big.” she said with a smile. This happy and enthusiastic working environment is reflected on the dedication to guests, who naturally feel welcomed and loved. Come and meet the team!

TAILOR MADE HOLIDAYS DESIGNED WITH LOVE AND PASSION GILI ISLANDS

Improvisation is an art. Finding a solution at the right moment is a skill hard to refine and this is probably why we tend to plan ahead our travel plans. However, what if when we are finally on holiday we realise our wishes have changed? It is hard to imagine what we would like to do on our time off while sitting in an office miles away from our dream destination. On the one hand, we would like to be completely carefree, and just go, sure we will find exactly what we need and all will happen at the right time. On the other hand, the fear of missing out is telling us that we should plan our trip but at the same time leave some room and budget to additional activities

and destinations we may discover on the spot. Due to crowded high seasons, unexpected changes and last minute cravings, things may not go the way we hoped for. Imagine you had a friend who loves travelling and whose passion is to unveil hidden local secrets and comfortable properties that really match your dreams and budget. Imagine this friend would be there to listen to your desires, comments and remarks before, during and after your holiday, ready to give you suggestions according to what you feel like doing that day. Wouldn't the whole holiday planning process be smoother? Well, there is a solution. Ask Julie at Gili Travel Agency, the most responsive and flexible holiday planner you could find! 49 Gililife

GILI ZOOM “I have been travelling for many years and people were asking me suggestions about the places I had been to, so I started to collect addresses and tips ” Julie, the mind behind GiliTA said. Many customised trips are all organised beforehand, but not at GiliTA, where there is no schedule apart from transfers and accommodation. “You wake up and decide what to do, planning activities along the way.” Julie explained. “You just WhatsApp me – today I feel like... - And I'll give you the right tip you need.” She added with a smile. Julie and her team carry out a preliminary assessment to understand guests' personality and holiday wishes and

Gililife 50

really get to know who approaches them to be able to provide the appropriate suggestions. When it is time to choose the accommodation, the possibility to “mix & match” properties of different category is a winning option, which gives guests the freedom to discover a local gem serving amazing home-made local food or indulge in a luxury treatment in an exclusive boutique hotel. GILI COOKING CLASSES LEARN, LAUGH, EAT GILI AIR Indonesia is the largest and one of the most diverse archipelagos in the world and a land of a variety of cultures, traditions and ethnic groups. This amazing diversity is reflected in its cuisine, as diverse and colourful as its people and heritage. Most dishes in Indonesian cuisine are accompanied by rice (nasi), which is the country's staple food. Noodles are also common, mainly fried (mie goreng) or boiled (rebus) in soups and curries. Thanks to the tropical weather, Indonesia has always been rich in botanical resources and it has been known for its large supply and quality spices and tropical fruits throughout history. Vegetables are typically cooked in curries or steamed to prepare dishes such as gado-gado, which is seasoned with peanut sauce, a famous Indonesian dressing.

Peanut sauce is also used to season satay, the Indonesian version of meat skewers. Coconuts play a big role in Indonesian cuisine. Coconut milk is used to soften steamed rice and to prepare creamy curries, while coconut flesh is grated on desserts (kelopon) and on vegetarian dishes (urap-urap). The most famous meat-based dish is probably rendang, a parfumed beef stew traditionally from Sumatra. Soy beans are used in many dishes, bean curd (tofu) and tempeh (fermented soy beans) are very popular and enjoyed as healthy snacks (tempeh goreng) or in nutritious vegetarian dishes (kari tahu). Interested in knowing more? Check out Gili Cooking Classes, learn to cook some Indonesian dishes to surprise and treat your friends and family back home!

53 Gililife

You will be trained in traditional techniques and be taught how to replace some ingredients that cannot be easily found in continental or cold climates. Once the dishes are ready, the course is not over! Sit at the table with your course peers and enjoy a nice meal all together. THE roasthouse VALUE FOR MONEY AT THE GILIS' BEST SAILORS' TAVERN GILI TRAWANGAN

Defined as “havens in an heartless sea” by historian Michael Seltzer, sailors' taverns have been popularized by sailors' accounts of seafaring life, historical writings and uncountable works of fiction. Places where sailors gathered have often been viewed as sites of “solidarity, resistance and rebellion”, often representing a family to sailors, who, back ashore after a long absence, would often feel estranged in their own home. Once a typical feature on the waterfront of harbours across the world, taverns were places where sailors used to meet to enjoy a deserved rest and where, heartened by good, home-made food and lifted by rivers of strong liquor, they would tell their stories and pass on

their superstitions, surrounded by laughs, voices and joyful music. Since Jack Sparrow and Melville, maritime business and harbours have changed profoundly, but there are some places that maintain that welcoming cozy atmosphere able to make travellers feel at ease after a long journey. Offering a unique blend between an underground music cafe, a music local pub and a sailors' tavern, The Roasthouse in Gili Trawangan is the closest you can get to that feeling of “loud homeliness” typical of sailors' hanging out places. Renown among local expats in the Gilis for the big, yummy burgers, roasted meat and quality drinks at a reasonable price, the Roasthouse is a great place to hang out from morning to late night.

57 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Located in a tiny alley close to Gili Trawangan's night market, The Roasthouse is a welcoming space full of stories and odd objects ready to serve superb hearty meals and drinks on the rocks to the bravest. A modern version of sailors' tavern, but at times reminiscent of the atmosphere of smokey punk rock bars or underground jazz cafes, The Roasthouse is interestingly decorated. The large use of recycled materials such as driftwood, glass bottles and parts of ancient boats create a cozy familiar space, while artwork and music magazines used as wallpaper, and random objects collected in various locations make guests breathe art and music as they step in. The rooftop terrace

Gililife 58

is a breezy, comfortable space that offers a privileged view on Gili T's busy village life, and the perfect place for a good lunch out of sight. At night, the Roasthouse becomes a music bar popular among local expats, offering special deals on drinks and meals. You can go for a sure bet with the signature roast chicken or choose among the wide range of yummy burgers. On Wednesdays, try the meat pie, on Saturdays the sausage roll, and everyday select among the endless choices on the menu such as bangers & mash, cottage pie and pasta! Try the meatball with cheese or indulge in the array of tapas. Even if it offers food delivery island-wide, The Roasthouse is worth visiting. You will fall in love with the decoration, the food, the music, the drinks and all this at a very good value for money!

You will often hear foreigners living in the Gilis complaining about having to eat always the same food or else to spend too much when indulging in something different. If you stay in the Gilis long enough, you will certainly hear comments about the lack of concerts and jam sessions featuring diverse types of music and about the low quality and high price of spirits. Next time you meet someone making such complaints, bring them to the Roasthouse, where good French wine and import drinks are sold at “sailors' price. Affordable and tasty, the Roasthouse prides itself to serve decent food and drinks at a decent price and to offer a unique familiar atmosphere, where music is part of the menu. No wonder the place has become a pre-drink or aperitif meeting place for local expats and tourists alike!

GILI FRUIT

mangosteen Called “Manggis in Bahasa Indonesia, mangosteen are native to Southeast Asia and particularly appreciated for their sweet taste of citrus with hints of peach. The fruit is contained in a hard and thick shell of dark purple colour, which can be easily cracked open by pressing it with your hands. Inside, white, soft, juicy segments are neatly organised in a design similar to those of an orange. Take care when you bite into the segments, as most of them contain bitter-tasting seeds. To know how many segments are contained in the fruit, check the bottom of the shell!

HEALTH BENEFITS High potassium content controls heart rate & regulates blood pressure Rich in antioxidants such as xanthones, vitamin C and B-complex vitamins, which help to fight allergies, infections, skin disorders and inflammations Scientific studies have demonstrated that mangosteens have chemo-preventive properties and have potential to slow the growth of cancer cells

Mixed spring greens with MANGOSTEEN & Citrus vinaigrette This healthy recipe brings out the citrus peachy taste of mangosteen in a delicate salad that will probably make you fall in love with this sweet fruit. The Dijon mustard adds a pungent taste, but can be replaced by vinegar, more easily available in Lombok and in the Gili islands.

March is a playtime month for many of you and also a very loving and romantic time. Make the most of it...take time off work, go somewhere new on the weekends, and appreciate relationships.
