PLASTIC FREE PARADISE CAMPAIGN PROJECT BY GILI SHARK CONSERVATION Check out the work of the Gili Shark Conservation Project! This multinational and highly motivated team has come together on the tiny island of Gili Air, Indonesia They are currently leading various projects on and around the island to support marine conservation.

Gililife 18

“For us, it’s not just about the marine life and sharks, we also care about the environment. We want to create awareness for the use of single-use-plastic and reduce the amount that’s being used on the Gili Islands” said Rose, co-founder of the project. We created the campaign Plastic Free Paradise to help the Gili Islands to become plastic free! Our aim is to educate locals as well as tourist and provide information about how you can leave nothing but footprints on beautiful Gili Air. Our #PlasticFreeParadise campaign is a wholehearted project that we keep building up with new ideas. So far this is what we have achieved: Refill My Bottle Gili Islands is a project from mindful businesses on the Gili Islands that would like to make a difference. Together we created a network of water refill stations where people can refill their bottle for free or a small fee. Would you like to know where your closest refill station is? Check out the map on page 57 or download the app. We offer free #PlasticFreeParadise trainings for all businesses on Gili Air. During this training we will explain (in Bahasa Indonesia) why plastic pollution is a problem and offer solutions to how we can keep our beautiful island green & clean. Did you know that just a few little adjustments in your business will already have a huge effect on the environment? Become part of the solution and offer your staff our PlasticFreeParadise training. It’s our mission to give the gift of conservation to the next generation. Children are born curious. They are interested and excited to know about the natural world and what happens in it. Educating children about the importance of environmental conservation will help ensure the long-term health of our planet for generations to come. Every week our Research Team visit the school on Gili Air to tell the children all about the world of conservation. Did you know that Indonesia is the second-largest contributor to marine plastic pollution after China? A recent study estimates that between 1.14 million and 2.40 million tonnes of plastic enters the oceans every year from rivers. These days turtles are ingesting twice the amount of plastic they were 25 years ago. Together with the businesses on Gili Air we’re organizing regular beach clean-ups as well as underwater clean-ups for divers. Everyone is welcome to join and we are happy to have as many participants as possible, both on land and underwater! Because little by little, a little becomes a lot. Check our community calendar for updates and join us for the next clean-up.

THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 24

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 26

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 27 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle, where time seems Gililife 28

to bend and life seems to slow down. Out of the three Gili’s, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by big crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet

GILI MENO

interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 30

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SPECIES

This months featured species

The

HERMIT CRAB

Hermit crabs are one of the cutest creatures you will meet on the beach in the Gili’s. You are likely to see them frantically carry their shell as they climb grains of sand, occasionally hiding in the shell or in a hole. The truth is that hermit crabs are born without a shell and “migrate” to a larger shell as they grow, as they need to find one that best fits their size. They can be seen fighting among each others for shells! Crustaceans belonging to the Paguroidea family, hermit crabs are very diverse (over 1100 identified species!) and can be

Gililife 34

found everywhere in the world, from tropical humid forests to the deep sea. In fact, some species are totally terrestrial, while some others have adapted to life in the ocean. They have a soft body that can grow up to 40 cm in length, 10 legs and 2 claws, which they use to protect themselves against predators. Its antennas serve as sensory organs and all species breathe with their gills, even if the species living on land. Hermit crabs are omnivores, generally preferring sea critters.

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 36

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of revallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 38

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 40

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 42

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

INDONESIA'S SPORTS

LET'S PLAY Indonesians love sports. They love playing and they love watching them, especially if Indonesia is one of the contestants! However, the concept of sport, namely as an activity done in the purpose of physical exercise, is pretty new and has been introduced with modern times. Traditionally, many physical activities considered as a sport in most Western countries were usual tribal practices performed daily, which eventually became a source of competition and entertainment. War or social dances, tribal combats, dragon boat and kayak races, bull racing and even archery are all physical practices that had (and have) a ritual, art, religious or martial purpose. The Dutch introduced the concept of

competitive sports and this is when badminton and football started to be popular among Indonesians. After independence the Indonesian National Sport Committee (KONI) was created and today it remains the body in charge to organise sporting events across the country. Many venues have been built to host sporting events, the most famous probably being the Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta, built in occasion of the Asian Games of 1962. This year, Indonesia will host the 18th Asian Games; held in Jakarta, Palembang (Sumatra) and Bandung (Java), they will run from August 18th to September 2nd 2018 and feature over 462 events in 40 different sports! 49 Gililife

INDONESIA'S SPORTS

INDONESIA’S MOST POPULAR SPORTS

PENCAK SILAT Pencak Silat is an umbrella name for a series of martial arts native to Indonesia. The name dates back to 1948 when the pencak from Java and the silat from Sumatra were unified under a common martial art following independence and the Pencak Silat Association was funded. Pencak and Silat are also considered as two facets of the practice, namely the training and external aspect (Pencak) and the secret techniques of attack and self-defence (Silat). This martial art involves full body fighting and the use of weapons. It is believed to have been introduced by Indian warriors, while the earliest evidence of a formal teaching of this martial art dates back Gililife 50

to the 6th century, when it was taught in Riau, Sumatra. It is reported that some forms of Pencak Silat were used against the Dutch during the colonial era, especially by the Bugis pirates. Today, Pencak Silat is taught in schools and is one of the official sports at the Southeast Asian Games. There exists a variety of styles according to the island and different techniques preferring kicks, strikes or hands and arms. Also the weapons are various and differ greatly, the most famous being the Kris (double-edged dagger) and the Kerambit (half-moon shaped knife). The most important Pencak Silat event is the Pencak Silat World Championship, which takes place every 2-3 year in a different Southeast Asian country.

ARCHERY Archery is one of Indonesia’s most classical sports and was chosen as the symbol of Jakarta Gelora Bung Stadium, also as a reference to the Ramayana story, where Rama use his powerful bow in the struggles against the demons. In Indonesia, the modern sport of archery can be traced back to the local practice known as “jemparingan, which originated in the ancient kingdom of Yogyakarta, Java, centuries ago, where was reserved to the members of the royal family. This traditional form of archery differs from the modern sport because archers are not standing but are sitting cross-legged and the target is not circular, but it is a 33 cm stick made of hay and sponge that represents a person. In addition, in jemparingan the string is drawn to the chest and not to the mouth, which is supposed to induce more concentration in the archer. Today, archery is practiced by people of any age and background; the Indonesian Archery Federation and hundreds of clubs and association across the country promote this sport, known for developing concentration, patience and precision. The current most famous Indonesian competitive archer is Muhammad Hanif Wijaya, who at only 21 years of age has already represented Indonesia in major international tournaments among which the World Championships and the 2016 Summer Olympics. 51 Gililife

INDONESIA’S MOST POPULAR SPORTS (...continued)

FOOTBALL Together with badminton, football is one of Indonesia’s most popular sports. “Futsal” are a common feature in almost every village and town and boys of any age can be seen playing football almost everywhere. Indonesians also love international football, and it is not rare to find football experts disguised as taxi drivers or shop attendants!

Gililife 52

This popularity started after independence, though the Indonesian football league started in the 1930’s during the Dutch colonial era and Indonesia was the first Asian country to ever qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1938. In spite of the major internal support, Indonesia has not yet reached international success.

BADMINTON Introduced by the Dutch, badminton rapidly became one of Indonesia’s favourite and most practiced sports. Also known as “bulu tangkis”, the game of badminton has been played at a professional competitive level since the 1950s, when the PBSI (Persatuan Bulutangkis Seluruh Indonesia or Badminton Association of Indonesia) was created and badminton tournaments started to be organised in Indonesian major cities. The most famous national tournament is the Indonesia Open, which every year attracts international elite players. Indonesia has become one of the world’s strongest teams, winning gold medals at almost every Olympic Games since this sport was introduced in 1992. Other very important games at the Thomas cup, the Uber cup and the Sudirman cup. Taufik Hidayat is one of Indonesia’s badminton legendary players; now retired, he became known as an Olympic champion and won the Indonesian Open 6 times.

ARDI BELTZA FREEDOM TO BE YOURSELF IN GOOD COMPANY GILI AIR There is an area in Gili Air, a bit away from the most touristic main strip, where the vibe is cool, the food delicious and the sunset breathtaking; no wonder it has become the trendiest place on the island! Stretching from legendary Legend Bar up to calm and quiet Nusa Indah, this part of the island hosts some of the best restaurants and some of the less commercial parties currently on Gili Air, a few spas and a local market selling home-made crafts. The area is a mix of local businesses, private residences, quiet eco-lodges and big green fields where the cows still roam freely; its local and foreign residents show a caring and friendly approach to island’s life and offer homely yet quality hospitality standards. Lively but peaceful, this part of the island surprises for preserving Gili Air’s

traditional local flavour side by side to a modern international vibe, where nights are entertained by Indonesian or Reggae acoustic concerts and flavoured by amazing Spanish tapas, Mexican tacos and Italian/ Japanese seafood delicacies. The sun sets right in front of the beach, which is much less crowded than the sandy beaches on the east and hosts a variety of cafes serving fresh food and drinks all day long in a lazy tropical atmosphere. Located 100 mt from the beach, Ardi Beltza (meaning “black sheep” in Basque) is the perfect hideaway to live and explore this area. With its lush flower garden, stunning sustainable architecture and unparalleled welcoming hosts, the “black sheep” will soon become your basecamp. 59 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Passing Ardi Beltza’s recycled wooden gate is like stumbling upon a small village while on a journey at sea. The property is a compound of recycled wooden houses and lumbung built around a common swimming-pool and an old boat converted into a bar, all surrounded by a rich tropical garden. The atmosphere is laid-back; grenades, pineapples, papaya and frangipani trees create a fresh haven of peace and the friendly staff provides that character and identity that makes you feel immediately at home. “We want to support people before, during and after their trip, make their stay with us a personal experience, where they meet new people, new cultures and leave a piece of their heart with us” Manager Diki

Gililife 60

said. “Here, people feel free to do as they want: chill on their own undisturbed or hang out with us!” Director Rodrigo added. Rodrigo’s latino vibe and Diki’s contagious smile are the ingredients for an unforgettable stay. Guests can choose to have a private and quiet holiday or else join the local and expat group of friends meeting at Ardi Beltza and enjoy the island’s activities in good company. Healthy smoothie bowls with sunflower, pumpkin and chia seeds, goji and cranberries are served all day long, best accompanied by Ardi Beltza’s famous fresh juices. As the evening approaches, Diki and the team show off with their selection of cocktails you surely do not want to skip!

Musa Cookery Rodrigo will be leaving Ardi Beltza this summer to dedicate full-time to his exciting upcoming project: Musa Cookery, a restaurant created with food education and culture at its core. Opening in 2018, the restaurant will be supplied by a vegetable garden located at the back of the premises that is already operational and that was designed according to permaculture principles in order to maximise soil health. Healthy vegetarian recipes will be prepared with the variety of vegetables and fruit grown in the garden and will also be shared via food education workshop and vegan cooking classes. Whether to try one of the innovative vegetarian dishes or to learn about permaculture and healthy cuisine, Musa Cookery is bound to become a meeting place where to hang out all day long! PERLA NERA YUMMY QUALITY BURGERS AND GREAT COMMUNITY TIMES! GILI AIR The Gili’s islands community is constantly expanding; as local businesses grow and more and more foreigners move on the islands on a permanent basis, the need to gather as a community has also grown. As a result, more activities are sprouting, and today the Gili’s offer much more than what has been traditionally dedicated to tourists or locals only. Lectures about marine life, interesting documentaries screenings, out-of-the-box music events, body arts festivals and football championships are just some of the cool stuff happening on this tiny islands, which until not so long ago were nothing but tropical atolls populated by fishermen. The need for a space where locals and foreigners would share some chill

and fun time while enjoying good food is the concept behind Perla Nera, Gili Air’s new burger restaurant. Four years after starting Classico, Gili Air’s most renown and undoubtedly best pizzeria, Andrea and Alessio decided to keep the adventure going and open a new business. Always focusing on high-quality yet simple food, this time the Italian power couple pushed their imagination and created a place that does not only offer amazing, locallysourced great food, but also a meeting place where locals and foreigners alike can gather for some easygoing fun time together. We are talking about Perla Nera, the latest burger place in Gili Air and the one and only casual space on the island where anyone can become a football player, a volleyball supporter and have a great time!

67 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Before landing on Gili Air’s white beaches, Andrea and Alessio travelled across the world refining their hospitality skills and delighting worldwide palates with their wonderful cuisine. A time came when they both decided to settle and Gili Air came on the cards, where the couple opened Classico Pizzeria, which soon became (and still is) a phenomenal success, finally delivering the real Italian pizza on the island. Their second venture has opened less than a year ago and is already island-known for the yummy healthy variety of burgers and juices. Perla Nera is actually more than a restaurant. Located next to the local schools area, Perla Nera stretches on a large land dotted by mango and jackfruit trees ready to welcome tourists, expats and locals

Gililife 68

alike to enjoy the place. The idea is to establish a gathering place where people would meet to play or cheer at a football, volleyball game; connect more locals to foreigners, involve old and new Gili’s residents into fun activities. “The idea comes from feeling that something was missing on the island, we felt the need for more social life.” Andrea explained with a smile. The result is a breezy garden full of shade and smiles where the atmosphere is nice and everyone feels welcome. A strong eco-friendly policy rules the property, where no plastic bottles can be seen and whenever possible local organic products are sourced! Enjoy Perla Nera, enjoy good food and good vibes!

The real burgers Andrea and Alessio prepare their signature burgers with the best quality meat on the market! Serving locally-sourced produce and high quality import meat, Perla Nera is constantly updating its menu with innovative burger recipes! Get ready to taste mouth-watering 100-130g home-made beef patties and free range chicken with fresh vegetables and home-made chips! Not eating meat? No problem! JASMINE HOMETEL YOUR HOME PERSONAL SPA GILI AIR For as much as it may sound pompous, a holiday on a tropical island can be pretty stressful. The heat, the sun, the long walks in the sand and the exciting dives, the thrill for novelty, the new adventures and encounters as well as a busy schedule filled with all sort of activities can burn you down faster than you think. You come on holiday and you end up more tired than when you left! The good news about all this is that Indonesia has one of the oldest and richest tradition in beauty treatments, dating back to the times of Borobudur and Javanese Royal courts, which means getting pampered in one of the many specialised spas and

beauty salons is widely accessible in touristic as well as in less touristic locations. Lombok and the Gili’s islands are no exception and are actually one of the places beside Bali where to get high-quality treatments by very qualified therapists. Add this to the stunning locations and you’ll have the antidote to your busy holiday stay! One of the latest and worthy additions to the Gili’s beauty temples is Jasmine Spa, a cozy and fully equipped new spa located on the sunset side of Gili Air. Owned and managed by Lombok experienced therapist and avid traveller Anne, Jasmine Spa is where to get the local or international treatment most adapted to your needs! 71 Gililife

GILI ZOOM After graduating at Bali International Beauty Academy and getting some work experience in the Island of Gods, Anne left Indonesia and worked in a variety of luxury hotels in Kazakistan, Turkey and Cyprus among others. In 2015 she decided to come back to Lombok and opened her first spa in Gili Air. “I wanted to open my own business and improve my career” she explained. “I like training therapists and see them gaining experience step by step. It makes me proud.” she added. Three years later, Anne and her Jasmine Spa are an institution in Gili Air, where she has just moved her spa to a new inland location opposite Dolcemare restaurant and Captain Coconuts. With its peaceful and welcoming atmosphere, Jasmine

Gililife 72

Spa has the feeling of a home personal spa, where you can unwind and let the therapists take the lead. Choose a Swedish massage to release tension or to unknot muscle pain after the harsh Rinjani trek! Opt for a LomiLomi if you need to relax and restore the energy flow or go for the 4 hands massage, where two therapists work together on your body. “The Hot Stone massage will help remove toxins and fix points on your spine, while the refreshing Aloe Vera treatment is ideal after being in the sun all day.” Anne explained. Jasmine Spa also offers usual spa treatments such as manicure, pedicure, facials, ear candle and will soon include cream baths and waxing on the menu!

Jasmine Hometel Jasmine Spa is also a hotel! Featuring 6 cozy rooms, each one with its ensuite bathroom and a little garden, Jasmine Hometel is an unpretentious yet ideal accommodation choice if you like it quiet and close to the beach. Gililife Recommends Explore Jasmine Spa special packages! While the Balinese massage is probably one of the best on the island, you will be surprised by the quality of other international treatments such as reflexology, lomi-lomi and shiatsu. Try them all! You are on holiday, you deserve it!

WELCOME TO

BAYAN – MASJID KUNO Built in the 16th century, the Bayan Mosque is the oldest mosque in Lombok. It has woven bamboo walls and is built on stone foundation. It is located around 80 km from Mataram and is part of a very interesting and meaningful religious site.

GERUPUK Gerupuk is a small fishermen's village known for its peaceful life and surfing spots. If you love to surf or are looking for a white empty beach just for you, Gerupuk Bay is the perfect destination!

NATURE & ADVENTURE

TREKKING - RINJANI Mount Rinjani soars to 3726m above sea level (2nd highest volcano in Indonesia). The ascent does not require highly technical skills but rather determination! Start from Senaru, North Lombok, a site also known for its magnificent waterfalls.

LOMBOK

WATERFALLS - SENARU From the village of Senaru it takes 20 minutes walk to access the waterfalls. You can cross the valley and go down the 315 steps following the irrigation canals. Powerful waterfall, locals say that it must go behind to rejuvenate a year!

Gililife 80

GILI GEDE Gili Gede is a tropical jewel. The lack of traffic and untouched nature are two of the main features of this island! The clear waters and abundant marine life guarantee fantastic snorkeling experience steps from your bungalow.

TANJUNG AAN The Tanjung Aan bay is huge with pristine, fine, white sand on one side, and on the other, a golden sandy beach with large grains. A central rock separates the two different beaches and you can climb it to admire the magnificent view! EKAS Renowned for its world-class surfbreaks and strong wind that blows all year round, this peninsula is the paradise for surfers and kite-surfers. Ekas also offers white beaches with pristine water on sandy bottoms!

MATARAM Mataram, the capital of Lombok has several sectors: Ampenan, the pear, Mataram, the administrative center, Cakra, the business center and Bertais-Sweta where the bus station is located. From the Gilis, take the monkey forest road and visit the Mall for a shopping session! BANYUMULEK The Sasak artisans of Lombok produce pottery for centuries and pass on their traditions from one generation to another. Visit one of the most important centers in Banyumulek where you will observe the manufacturing process and find a wide range of objects.

DESERT POINT Said to be "the best left in the world", Desert Point is an oasis for experienced surfers. Break is located near the village of Bangko-Bangko and produces powerful rollers that can be surfed up to 300m. The best season is from May to September. RECIPE

INGREDIENTS 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers (also known as roselle) 2 litres cold water 1 cup sugar OPTIONAL ADDITIONS 1 sprig mint 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger 1⁄2 cup lemon juice

HIBISCUS TEA Although not originally from Indonesia, hibiscus tea, or Karkade as this refreshing drink is world-wide known, can be easily made in our beloved tropical islands, as all ingredients can be locally sourced.

PREPARATION • Rinse the dried flowers in cold water; • Heat the water and add the dried hibiscus as soon as it begins to boil; • Turn the fire off and let the flowers infuse for about ten minutes; • Pour the water using a strainer to separate the flowers from the water. • Add the optional ingredients if desired • Add ice and chill completely. • May be served over ice as well.
