THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 24

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 26

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 27 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island Gililife 28

where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the

GILI MENO

true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apano problem!!

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 30

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

ACTIVITIES

An exceptional MARINE WORLD FULL OF

beauty & biodiversity

SCUBADIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Gililife 32

Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a soughtafter destination for muck diving.

There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SPECIES

This months' featured species

' Antennariidae' Commonly known as

FROGFISH

Found across tropical oceans, they mainly live in shallow waters and rocky or sandy bottoms, though some species can be found up to 4,000 mt. They are relatively small fish, ranging from 5 and 40cm of length. Their body is covered in small spikes and they can expand their mouth up to 12 times, allowing them to swallow big prey. Frogfish are resourceful predators, who lure their prey by deceiving them with a specialized organ located on their dorsal fin, which looks like a small worm and is used as a bait. By moving this “fishing line”, frogfish lure other animals, attack them by surprise

Gililife 34

and swallow them expanding their mouth to engulf them whole. This strategy is called aggressive mimicry and, as well as with its tendency to stay hidden and not move much, make frogfish extremely successful predators.

DID YOU KNOW... Frogfish tend not to swim much. They either move by jet-propulsion, by forcing water out of their gill openings, or they “walk”, using their pectoral fins like little hands to move around the reef.

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 36

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 38

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 40

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 42

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

RAMADAN Gililife 50

"Ramadan is the month whose beginning is mercy, whose middle is forgiveness and whose end is freedom from fire. ~ Prophet Mohammad

51 Gililife

RAMADAN

what is Gililife 52

Once a year, Muslims across the world celebrate Ramadan to commemorate the month in which the Qur'an, Islam's sacred book, was reveled to Prophet Mohammed. Over these 29-30 days, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and engaging in sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk and are encouraged to read the entire Qur'an as well as to avoid sinful behaviours such as fighting and gossiping. This tradition was introduced in the Muslim world in the second year of Hijra in 624 CE and is still widely observed across the world. Fasting (Sawm) during the month of Ramadan is particularly important because it complies with one of the five pillars of Islam, namely mandatory acts that all Muslim believers must observe, among which practicing Salat - five daily prayers - and ZakÄ t, charitable giving. As it follows the Muslim calendar, Ramadan begins about 11 days earlier every year, the first day depending on the sighting of the crescent moon (Hilal). For all Muslims, Ramadan is a time for prayer and reflection, a period of the year in which they challenge their daily routine to be closer to human sufferings and celebrate God. Elders, children, pregnant and menstruating women and people who are sick or are travelling are exempted from fasting, but everybody gathers on the last day to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr, one of Islam's most important festivity. 53 Gililife

With almost 90% of its 250 million citizens practicing Islam, Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population in the world. Islam reached Indonesia before the 14th century and soon became the dominating religion in the country. More than 20 kingdoms based on the teachings of Islam were established by

the 15th century and today Muslims are represented in Parliament by political parties preaching a moderate and tolerant interpretation of Islam. Islam is the main religion practiced in Java and Sumatra, as well as in Sulawesi and Lombok. Islam is also the main religion practiced in the Gili Islands.

If you are spending the month of Ramadan (bulan puasa) in Lombok and the Gili Islands, you will notice a slower rhythm of activities and some local restaurants closed during the day, but most tourist-related activities are not affected. Sure, party-goers will need to migrate, as no parties are allowed for the whole month, but for other matters, Do Not worry! Boats respect the same

timetable, so do dive shops and yoga or other activities centres. You can easily find food at some major restaurants in Lombok's most touristic areas and a bit everywhere in the Gili islands, where most restaurants keep serving food all day long, though many close for sunset to allow Muslim employees to break the fasting (buka puasa).

KUNO VILLAS ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE MEETS CONTEMPORARY DESIGN GILI TRAWANGAN

Indonesian vernacular architecture is a vivid expression of the country's diverse culture; almost every region and province displays a distinct style, reflection of the community's historical legacy, cultural heritage and environmental needs. Traditionally, the omah or rumah adat (custom house) is considered the centre of family relations, customs & traditions, myths & taboos. In Central Java, the most popular traditional architectural style is the Joglo, which is typically associated to Javanese aristocrats' noble residences. Joglos are squared-shape buildings characterized by a pyramid-shaped roof center, which is supported by four strong pillars made of strong wood such as teak. The rectangular shape symbolizes the principle of carrying one's responsibilities in life and, more practically, the strong

foundations and simple structure allow to harmonize the building shaking in case of an earthquake. The main structure, or Soko Guru, is composed of 4 pillars, while the Tumpang Sari is the wood beam construction widening upwards, whose carvings typically bear a strong symbolic meaning related to the owners' social status. Staying in a Joglo is a luxury no longer reserved to Javanese noble families; the Joglo style has been developed to meet modern needs and it can be now found outside of Java, where ancient houses have been adapted to meet modern comforts. At Kuno villas on Gili Trawangan, the ancient splendor of these magnificent traditional buildings has been combined with contemporary design, maintaining their ancestral symbolic power and beautiful and functional shape and appearance.

67 Gililife

GILI ZOOM

Ancestral souls and modern personality Nestled in Gili Trawangan's most quiet and green side, Kuno Villas is a complex of luxury villas built in recycled and reclaimed Indonesian wood and sustainable materials, harmonically integrated in the natural environment and stylishly furnished and decorated. Reclaimed teak wood and restored Joglo houses have been combined with high-end modern finishings, resulting in a peaceful luxury village protected by the ancient souls of centennial wood. This ancestral yet homely character can be felt in every corner of the property, where every beam and carving has a story and every detail is taken care of by Kuno's attentive team in the space beautifully created by The Old Tree Company. The original buildings have been mixed with other materials to emphasize the character of the wood and make it more comfortable and durable. Gililife 68

The love and passion for ancient wood permeates all the villas at Kuno, where the driving concept is to minimize the environmental impact while maximising the tropical luxury experience. The property is composed of different types of accommodation, able to cater for honeymooners in search for ancient sacred blessings as well as for larger groups. Three renovated cow barns and three original 100 year-old Joglos facing a natural rock swimming pool overlooked by The Barong, another Javanese antique structure used for chilling out for all guests. All rooms feature open bathrooms with a pond and a rain shower or a bathtub, the final touch of these architectural gems. The same style is maintained throughout the property, which includes two 2-bedroom villas, one 3-bedroom villa and will soon feature a luxury glamping tent.

New life to wood “We have always dreamt to have our own resort” Isrina, one of the owners, proudly said. “Over the years, we poured our passion for recycled wood in a variety of ventures, among which Kayu Café, Gili Bumblebee Montessori School and The Old Tree Company, a sustainable construction company, which allowed us to gain invaluable experience in creating living spaces using ancient wood and without cutting any tree!” Indeed, Kuno Villas respects this concept and the sustainable mission is spread over the different aspects of the property. Waste is managed on-site and the water used for the gardens is collected from the bio-septic system. No new timber has been used and all the wood comes from reclaimed houses, boats or bridges. The entire resort and landscaped pathways are surrounded by solid earthen walls, constructed with eco sand bag building technique, also known as super adobe walls. “We upcycle all the wood offsets, we are excited to make them live again and to highlight their beauty and soul under a new modern light.” concluded Isrina with a smile.

ADENG ADENG BAREFOOT LUXURY GILI MENO

May it be because of the cost of utilities bills, the fear of wars and disasters or a dislike for the way resources are managed, it is more and more common to dream of being able to power our home without reliance on a power grid, municipal water, or other external resource. The supreme example of a self-sufficient home is probably the Earthship, a building made in recycled materials that takes care of its inhabitants and exists in harmony with the surrounding environment. “I think real sustainability involves six aspects of humanity,” Architect Mike Reynolds and father of the Earthship movement recently said in an interview: “First, humans need comfortable shelter that doesn’t use fuel. Then, we all need electricity and water, and all societies

need to do something with sewage and the garbage they produce. Last but not least, everybody needs food. These, he said, are six things that all of humanity has to address to have a life today. The Earthship addresses all of these six things, all the time, all over the world.” Not all of us have the means and interest to live in an Earthship, but it is possible to reduce our environmental impact by supporting and relying more on the use of renewable resources. Adeng-Adeng in Gili Meno is the perfect example of an effort towards energy self-sufficiency and upgrading of the surrounding environment to meet human needs without harming nature. Try this way of life and you will discover you will not have to renounce to anything!

71 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Adeng-Adeng is a peaceful property located in the North of Gili Meno, a couple of minutes walk from the beach. The Swedish owners poured their passion for nature and bricolage in the development of the property, which went from being a swamp surrounded by the jungle to a lush tropical garden enclosing a fish pond and crossed by canals. Originally created as a private house in a large property where the owners would come to relax and recharge, it soon became a sough-after location open to external visitors. Today, it features 3 wooden bungalows carefully furnished reflecting local design and two 80 sqm rooms in adobe, emulating Southern Europe architectural design and ideal for families and large groups. “We built this place by doing and re-

Gililife 72

doing” Marcus, one of the owners said. All the natural materials used for the construction were sourced on-site or locally in order to limit the impact on the environment; an ongoing project is converting part of the property in an aquaponics vegetable garden, the goal being to be self-sufficient for the production of vegetables in the near future. “We try to keep the garden as natural as possible, our policy being – what grows, stays -” Marcus added. The result is a harmonically arranged garden hosting varieties of hibiscus, frangipani and banana trees, creating a special, cozy atmosphere surrounded by the beauty of nature. Solar panels and batteries are supporting the government power grid ensuring your vacation will not be disturbed by the frequent powers outages.

Mayaliam Beach Restaurant Run by the same management, MayaLiam is Adeng-Adeng's beach club and restaurant catering for guests and passers-by. Specialised in barbecues, MayaLiam is popular for its burgers and pizzas and is open for all-day dining from morning to night. Trees were planted on the beach to offer a shady dining area and protect the beach from erosion. A breezy wooden terrace overlooks the beach, offering a privileged view over one of Gili Meno's best snorkeling spots. Contemplate the breath-taking sunset sipping a cocktail by the beach or enjoy watching a movie with your feet in the sand. Gililife Recommends: Pizza Adeng-Adeng, a crispy thin Italian-style pizza with real salami, tons of cheese and vegetables. Did you know... Adeng-Adeng's owners developed an application for weather forecast and boat schedule in the Gili Islands. Data comes from a weather station installed in the property! DIVE CENTRAL GILI YOUR DIVING FAMILY! GILI TRAWANGAN Opened only two years ago in Gili Trawangan, Dive Central Gili is a small dive centre specialised in professional and yet personal dive experiences. Whether you're a novice looking to experience your first dive, or a seasoned diver looking to take professional qualifications, their team is a family of divers that will make you feel at home! Located on the main strip of the island, this PADI dive centre finds itself right in front of the islands' unique Biorock dive site. “I love this location” said Steve Willard, Dive Central’s general manager also locally known as Scuba Steve. “We consider this dive site as our house reef and therefore we dive it as often as we can, we just grab a

tank and go explore the Biorocks!” These electrified steel structures have contributed to the restoration of the reef, becoming the home to a variety of marine biodiversity and now an excellent and interesting dive spot which Dive Central helps maintaining. Being the second largest Biorock project in the world, students and researchers come from all over the world to see and observe the growing reef. The many other dive spots around the Gili’s allow you to dive with stunning marine life like turtles and even sharks, explore WWII wrecks and even venture off to muck dive at great sites like Mentigi Bay and around jetties across the islands. 75 Gililife

GILI ZOOM The main asset of the centre is surely its team, a mix of knowledgeable and skilled instructors and very experienced local guides, some of which have been around for more than 15 years and know the dive sites like the back of their hand. Yudi, the local manager, is Steve's right hand and the two work together to make the rest of the staff feel like a real family. The dive school is sleek and stylish in its looks; it works well alongside the restaurant Pesona located on premises. This partnership makes for a different dynamic, offering great food with a friendly vibe.

Gililife 76

The atmosphere never dies at the shop, so whether it's 8am or 9pm there is always someone if not many of the crew around to sit and share a story or two. This family feeling is the greatest resource and pride, and you really feel at home at the shop. Other than small groups, you find that diving at this shop really isn't their job but their passion. Even after a full day of diving it's not uncommon to see a buddy team of Instructors or Divemasters getting together to go fun diving for themselves on the house reef. “I am very proud of the atmosphere here” Scuba Steve said. “I feel at home, not at work!”

Pigmy Seahorse

Underwater Encounters Here are some of the species you may have the luck to encounter on a muck dive in the Gili's: Pigmy Seahorse Syngnathidae family One of the smallest species of sea-horses in the world, they are famous for being masters of camouflage, able to blend the colours of their body with the surroundings. You are likely to spot them near gorgonian corals resting or eating. Indian Ocean Walkman Inimicus didactylus Also known as Demon Stinger or Scorpion fish, this venomous fish is related to Stone fishes and has a knobby and spiny appearance. They camouflage in the environment thanks to their looks and colour of their body, and spend most of their time hiding buried in the sand. Peacock Mantis Shrimp Odontodactylus scyllarus Beautifully coloured, these shrimps are known for their hunting techniques. When they find a palatable prey, they hit it by striking a punch with their front claws. The punch is 50 times faster than the blink of an eye!

GILI FRUIT

DRAGON FRIUT “Buah naga or pitaya come in different varieties and is produced by a species of cactus native to South America. In Lombok and the Gilis, you will mostly find dragon fruits with bright pink skin and white or purple flesh, these latter ones being the most juicy and tasty. The dragon fruit owes its name to its funky appearance, bright colours and soft spines, recalling the looks of dragons depicted in folklore and fairy tails. Because of its limited distribution and unusual look, the dragon fruit is still regarded as exotic in many parts of the world, so don't be surprised if you have never seen one before you came to Indonesia! Don't be intimidated by its looks! in fact, the dragon fruit is a totally edible and healthy&nutricious fruit! Perfect for colourful fruit salads and yummy smoothies, it goes well together with banana, lime and ginger!

HEALTH BENEFITS 100g serving of dragon fruit accounts for: 35% of the recommended daily Vitamin C intake, which helps boosting the body's immune system 12% of the required daily intake of Dietary Fiber, a natural remedy for constipation 87% of Water, so it's perfect to hydrate in the tropics! 10,6% of the required daily value intake of Iron, which keeps bones and blood healthy
