EN - Indonesia has been a destination of migration for centuries and the traces of this assorted cultural heritage are also reflected in the diversity of religions practiced in the country. Animism is the oldest practiced religion, followed by Hinduism and Buddhism, while Islam is the most practiced, with over 80% of Indonesians being Muslims. Indonesia is considered a very religiously tolerant country, mainly because freedom of religion is stated on the Constitution. However, only 6 religions are officially recognized, these being Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism and Confucianism. Animism is still widely practiced and Atheism is not recognized. L'animisme est la religion la plus ancienne, suivie par l'hindouisme et le bouddhisme. L'islam est la religion la plus pratiquée et plus que 80% des Indonésiens se déclarent musulmans. L'Indonésie est considérée comme un pays très tolérant du point de vue religieux, parce que la liberté de culte est établie par la Constitution. Cependant, seulement 6 religions sont officiellement reconnues, à savoir l'islam, l'hindouisme, le bouddhisme, le catholicisme, le protestantisme et le confucianisme. L'animisme est très répandu et l'athéisme n'est pas reconnu.

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island. " There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea, at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans and enjoy a drier Gililife 20
micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes- Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken that unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak Sasak Gili Air which is slightly different to Sasak Lombok.About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on
the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been
introduced over the years. The first Western traveler to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beaten-track paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in. Les cocotiers ont toujours été présents sur les îles, les mangues, bananes et papayes sont venues plus tard. Le premier étranger venu de l'occident est arrivé en 1984 à Gili Air et les premiers touristes, dans les années 90 lorsque Bali a acquis sa réputation mondiale ! Aujourd'hui, les îles Gilis sont de plus en plus populaires et séduisent un bon nombre de voyageurs venus de différentes horizons. Au fil du temps, les habitants des îles Gili se sont adaptés à une multitude de changements et d'immersions culturelles, mais ont réussi à conserver leur identité. Historiquement, ils ont vécu des moments difficiles. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'île de Lombok et les Gilis étaient occupées par les forces japonaises. Les îles ont été utilisées pour maintenir les prisonniers de guerre et les habitants ont subi le travail forcé. Une colline située au sud de Trawangan a été utilisée comme poste d'observation et aujourd'hui les vestiges d'un bunker demeurent. When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything- including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumored growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling Gililife 22
© ZHIVIRGO - Gililife of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travelers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkeling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation- ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know- there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

Lorsque vous entendez parler de Gili T, vous entendez souvent dire que c'est l'île de la fête, n'est-ce pas ? La plus grande et la plus développée des trois îles Gili a gagné cette réputation car elle offre un large éventail de tout y compris pour la vie nocturne. Il y a des fêtes tous les soirs de la semaine qui attirent de grandes foules de tous les coins du globe ! Commencez par faire un petit tour sur la place du marché pour goûter les délicieux plats locaux, puis laissez-vous tenter par le son des concerts live, des DJ résidents, dans les différents bars ou sur la plage ! Il est aussi possible de visionner des films en plein air. Trawangan est l'îlot du "Glam" avec ses resorts, ses spas, ses restaurants chics, ses boutiques et son héliport ! C'est la plaque tournante de charme pour un grand nombre de voyageurs. Trawangan est l'île du choix et convient à tous les budgets et à tous les styles de vie. Que vous soyez "routards" ou que vous recherchiez un logement de grand standing, tout est possible. La nourriture est très diverse et internationale, vous aurez aussi un grand choix d'activités et de divertissements ! Gili T possède de très belles plages aux eaux limpides et cristallines idéales pour la plongée et la balade aquatique en masque, palme, tuba (snorkeling).
Cette île possède quelques-uns des plus beaux jardins de corail et le plus grand nombre de centres de plongée. Bien qu'elle soit surtout connue comme une île "de fête", Gili T cache un nature dense et douce, aventurez-vous loin des côtes pour découvrir la magnifique cocoteraie ou les plages désertes de la côte ouest. N'ayant aucun transport motorisé aux îles Gilis, la location d'un vélo est un excellent moyen de découvrir l'île, et aussi une expérience aventureuse ! La vie ici est surréaliste, c'est un mélange d'exotisme et de vie occidentale ! Il existe plusieurs organisations de conservation sur Gili T comme Gili Eco Trust (GET), Gili Shark Fondation et bien d'autres... Demandez autour de vous, dans les centres de plongée comment vous impliquer ! Pour un point de vue suprême, marchez jusqu'à la colline au sud, vous y trouverez un vestige (une batterie d'artillerie) de la seconde guerre mondiale.

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. There are no bicycle rentals in Meno but it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air barugastyle accommodation for the true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apa- no problem!! ➜ Gili Meno is the island of sweet simplicity and nature where you will sigh with happiness Située entre Gili Air et Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno possède sans doute les plus belles plages de toutes les îles Gili . Il y a aussi les warungs (restaurants traditionnels) pour les populaires plats locaux comme le Nasi Campur. ©Gililife Although not a resident of the Gili islands, the long-tailed macaque is the most common primate in Indonesia. A big population lives in the Monkey Forest in Lombok, on the way to Bangsal harbour, where tourist cars often stop to photograph these irreverent creatures. Long-tailed macaques are very social animals and commonly live in large groups of 10-50 individuals. There is a strict hierarchy in the group, which is typically composed by a dominant male and an harem of females. Quoiqu'ils soient absents des Gilis, les macaques sont les primates les plus communs en Indonésie. Une population importante réside dans la Monkey Forest à Lombok, sur la route pour le port de Bangsal, où les voitures des touristes s'arrêtent souvent pour photographier ces créatures irrévérencieuses. Les macaques sont des animaux très sociables qui vivent en large groupes de 10 à 50 individus. Généralement, le groupe est composé d'un mâle dominant entouré par un harem de femelles et la vie du groupe est réglementée par une hiérarchie très stricte.
HABITAT
Long-tailed macaques are very adaptive animals and can be found across Southeast Asia in a wide range of habitats. They mainly live in primary and secondary forests, but also populate mangrove areas, plantations and even the parks of cities such as Singapore. Because of their large presence and aggressive behaviour, they are considered one of the worst invasive exotic species. Grâce à leur adaptabilité, les macaques se trouvent partout en Asie du Sudest dans une variété d'habitats. Ils habitent principalement la forêt primaire et secondaire, mais aussi les zones de mangroves, les plantations et même les parcs de villes telles que Singapour. DIET - ALIMENTATION
This macaque is omnivorous. It eats an amazing variety of plants and flowers and feeds on small vertebrates such as frogs and reptiles as well as on insects. Living in proximity to human settlements has changed its diet; macaques can be seen feeding on human food leftovers and in rubbish dumps and are known for attacking crops and villagers for food. Ces macaques sont omnivores. Ils se nourrissent d'une grande variété de plantes et fleurs, d'insectes et de petits invertébrés tels que les grenouilles et les reptiles. Toutefois, vivre à proximité des êtres humains a changé leurs habitudes alimentaires. On peut observer les macaques manger les restes des repas des hommes ou trainer dans les dépôts d'ordures. Il n'est pas rare qu'ils attaquent les récoltes agricoles et les villageois à la recherche de nourriture.
Reproduction
Females have a gestation period of about 5-6 months and take care of the young as it is typical in other mammals. Young males leave the group at around 4 years of age and regularly change group, whereas females typically stay in the same group, which can include several generations of females of the same lineage. SECRET REEF
turtles' paradise... SECRET REEF, le paradis des tortues... Beautiful dive site situated in the north-east of Gili Meno, SECRET REEF is not as "secret" as it used to be. Known for its stunning marlin sculptur this site is also famous for its mountain of corals spanning 9-10 meters at the top to 30 meters at the bottom. Going around the pinacle can be fascinating if the current allows it, giving time to find morays (mostly giant morays), scorpionfish, lionfish, schrimp, and octopus. Also, often on the top or on the sides of the hill, you will find green turtles with suckerfish cleaning their shell, schools of damselfish and fusiliers. You will find more pinacles to the north-east of the main pinacle going to a depth as great as 38 meters. This site suits every level of certification, new divers or the well experienced, and will be enjoyed by everyone. Très beau site de plongée situé au nord-est de Gili Meno, SECRET REEF n'est plus aussi "secret" qu'il eu été. Connu pour son marlin sculpté, ce site est également célèbre pour sa superbe montagne de corail qui trouve son pic à 9-10 mètres et touche le fond à 30 mètres. En faire le tour peut être prenant si le courant le permet, laissant le temps de trouver des murènes (javanèses pour la plupart), poissons scorpions, rascasses volantes, crevettes et poulpes bleus. Aussi, sont souvent posées au sommet ou sur les flancs de cette colline, des tortues vertes et les rémoras collés à leur carapace, des bancs de sergents majors ou encore de fusilliers. Vous trouverez d'autres pinacles moins fréquentés au nord-est de celui-ci allant jusqu'à 38 mètres de profondeur. Ce site est adapté à tous les niveaux, nouveaux plongeurs ou expérimentés, et fera donc le bonheur de tous. Gililife 42

Remora, or suckerfish, is a dark coloured fish with a flattened head and a thin body that is usually between 30 and 90 cm long. Their distinctive feature is the sucking organ on top of the head, a modified dorsal fin that acts like a suction disc. In fact, remoras do not have a swimming bladder and use their sucking organ to move across the ocean by attaching to larger marine animals and even small boats. They are mainly known for the relationship of commensalism they have with the animal they attach to, the most common being sharks, rays, sea turtles, dolphins, whales and large fish. Le Rémora est un poisson à ventouse de couleur foncé qui a une tête aplatie et un corps fin de 30 à 90 cm de longueur. Ce poisson est caractérisé par la plaque d'aspiration au dessus de sa tête, à savoir une nageoire dorsale modifiée qui agit comme une ventouse. En effet, les rémoras n'ont pas de vessie natatoire et utilisent leur disque de succion pour se déplacer dans l'océan en s'attachant à des animaux marins plus grands et même à de petites bateaux. HABITAT
Remoras are open-ocean dwellers, generally preferring warm tropical waters. If found near the coast or temperate waters, it is usually because of its host's whereabouts. For the same reason, it has sometimes even been spotted near freshwater streams! Le rémora vit en plein océan et préfère les eaux chaudes tropicales. Si on le rencontre près de la côte ou dans des eaux plus tempérées, c'est probablement en raison des déplacements de son hôte. Pour cela, il a été parfois signalé près de cours d'eau douce !
DIET - ALIMENTATION
Remoras feed on the host's leftovers and external parasites. The relationship between a remora and Gililife 46
its transporter is considered a form of commensalism: remoras clean their transporter from parasites, bacteria and dead skin and they get transportation and protection in exchange. Sometimes the hardsucking of a remora causes the host severe skin lesions, also known as persistent remora damage. Le rémora se nourrit des restes du repas et des parasites de son hôte. La relation entre un rémora et son hôte est considérée du commensalisme : le rémora débarrasse son hôte des parasites, bactéries et peau morte et obtient protection et transport en échange. Little is known about remoras' reproductive behaviour. Fertilised eggs are released in the ocean; embryos do not have a sucking disc and newly hatched fish live freely for about one year, after which their sucking organ is developed. At about 3cm, they are able to attach to a host. Sometimes, mating couples attach to the same host. Les habitudes reproductives des rémoras sont peu connues. Les oeufs fertilisés sont relâchés dans l'eau; les embryons n'ont pas de plaque d'aspiration et les alevins vivent libres jusqu'à ce que leur disque de succion soit développé (environ un an). SNORKELING Turtles guaranteed! Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish! Tortues garanties ! De beaux coraux et des poissons de toutes sortes ! Snorkeling (mask, snorkel, fins) is a good way to freely explore the waters around Gili islands! You can see turtles, all kinds of fish, blue-spotted stingrays... Let yourself drift with the current, whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong! You can rent the equipment very easily on all three islands. Another alternative is a snorkeling trip - a day out on a boat. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, visiting the best snorkeling spots of the three islands. You stop for lunch and finish about 4pm. You can book this trip on site or at your hotel. Le snorkeling (masque, tuba, palmes) est un bon moyen d'explorer les fonds marins des îles Gili en toute liberté ! Vous pourrez apercevoir des tortues, toutes sortes de poissons, des raies pastenague à points bleus... Laissez-vous dériver par le courant en faisant attention car parfois il peut être très fort ! Vous partez le matin vers 9h pour un tour complet des Gilis, en visitant les meilleurs spots de snorkeling des trois îles. Vous vous arrêtez pour le déjeuner et rentrez vers 16h. Vous pouvez réserver cette sortie en mer sur place ou à votre hôtel.

Begin by lying on your belly with your legs outstretched. Rest the left side of your face on your hands. Bend your right knee and slide the inside of your leg forward and up until your knee is parallel with your hip. If it’s OK for your knee, slide your ankle away from your left leg until there is a 90 degree angle in your knee. If you want more, straighten your leg so that the inside of your foot rests against the ground. Be fully present with any sensations or emotions that arise. Not everyone who goes to the Gilis is interested in water sports. Someone, like me for instance, is more into local arts and culture. As I explored the island, I happened to pass by in front of Ardi's house, which he has converted in Art Gallery and where he leads Silkscreening workshops. Ardi, originally from Sulawesi, has spent most of his life as an artist in Java. He recently moved to the Gilis because he was looking for a quiet place where to do and share art. He is an experienced sculptor, talented painter and a very patient teacher. I decided to draw my own design for the silkscreening workshop. I put together my love for drawing and the way I feel since I got to Gili Air: in peace with myself and Gililife 52
in connection to nature. I gave the drawing to Ardi, who transferred it into a frame and prepared the paint. Layer after layer, we applied the different colours on the fabric and soon after...I had my customised bag! Aux Gilis, tout le monde n'est pas forcémment intéressés par les sports nautiques. Il y a quelqu'un, comme moi par exemple, qui est intéressée par les arts et la culture locale. J'explorais l'île et je suis passée en face de la maison de Ardi, qu'il a converti en galerie d'art et où il mène des ateliers de serigraphie. Ardi est originaire de Sulawesi et a passé la plupart de sa vie d'artiste à Java. Récemment, il a déménagé
aux Gilis parce qu'il cherchait un endroit tranquille où pratiquer et partager son art. C'est un sculpteur expérimenté, un peintre habile et un enseignant patient. J'ai décidé de faire un dessin pour l'atelier de serigraphie. J'ai regroupé mon amour pour le dessin et la façon dont je me sens depuis que je suis arrivée à Gili Air : en paix avec moimême et en connexion avec la nature. J'ai donné le dessin à Ardi, qui l'a transféré sur un cadre et a préparé la peinture. Couche après couche, nous avons appliqué les différentes couleurs sur le tissu et peu après... j'avais mon sac personnalisé !

UNIS DANS LA DIVERSITE – LES RELIGIONS D'INDONESIE Introduced by President Sukarno in 1945, the Pancasila is a set of five principles which represents the philosophical foundation of the Indonesian state and celebrates the country multiculturalism through the slogan “Unity in Diversity”. Freedom of religion is stated on the Constitution, but, because the belief in one and only God is the first principle of the Pancasila, only 6 monotheist religions are officially recognized. Citizens' religion is stated on the identity card and must be one of the elected ones. However, traditional indigenous religions are still widely practiced and the intertwining of religions is a dynamic process that continues today. Le slogan de la Pancasila, « Unis dans la Diversité » , célèbre le multiculturalisme du pays. Islam
Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. 87.18% of its over 250 million citizens worship this religion, most of whom live in Java and Sumatra. Islam reached Indonesia before the 14th century and soon became the dominating religion in the country, though it is not as meticulously practiced in comparison the Middle East region. The majority of Indonesian Muslims practice Sunni Islam. L'Indonésie est le pays au monde qui compte le plus grand nombre de musulmans. 87,18% de ses 250 millions d'habitants suivent cette religion et la plupart résident à Java et à Sumatra. Introduced by the Dutch in the 16th century, today Protestantism is followed by 6.96% of Indonesians. Most practitioners live in Sulawesi, especially in Tana Toraja Regency. In fact, 65% of the ethnic Torajan population is Protestant. Le protestantisme fut introduit par les Hollandais au 16ème siècle et aujourd'hui est suivi par 6,96% des Indonésiens. Catholicism was introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Because of tensions with the Dutch, this religion spread only after 1800, becoming the main religion in Flores and West Timor. Catholicism is the main religion of Chinese Indonesians. Introduit par les Portugais au 16ème siècle, à cause des tensions avec les Hollandais protestants, le catholicisme ne s'est diffusé en Indonésie qu'après 1800. Hinduism
Hinduism was brought to Indonesia by Indian merchants in the 2nd century. Today, 1.69% of the population - mainly in Bali - practice this unique form of Hinduism, which is very distinct from the one practiced in other parts of the world. Balinese/Indonesian Hinduism believes in one Almighty God and celebrates the souls of the ancestors and a myriad of spirits through daily ceremonies, art and culture.

Buddhism reached Indonesia in the 4th century, brought about by Indian traders. It is currently followed by about 2 million people, mainly in Jakarta and West Kalimantan. Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist monument, represents the heritage of Buddhism in Indonesia. Introduit au 4ème siècle par les marchands indiens, à présent le bouddhisme est suivi par environ 2 millions de personnes, surtout à Jakarta et au Kalimantan Occidentale. Confucianism
Confucianism arrived in Indonesia with Chinese traders in the 3rd century. It flourished more as a social movement than a codified religion and suffered from anti-Chinese related discrimination, struggling to be considered as one of the official religions of the country. Le confucianisme arriva en Indonésie au 3ème siècle avec les marchands chinois. Il se développa plus comme mouvement social que religion codifiée. Suite à la discrimination contre les chinois, il fut difficile que le confucianism soit reconnu comme une des religions officielles du pays.
Animism
Animism has been practiced in Indonesia since its earliest recorded history and different forms of it keep being practiced by millions of people. However, the Indonesian government does not recognize animism as an official religion, but as traditional custom (adat) of indigenous beliefs. For this reason, several animistic religions have affiliated to other religions to avoid pressure to convert, but still uphold their native beliefs. Sumba is the only island in Indonesia where a most of the population adhere to their traditional religion. L'animisme est pratiqué en Indonésie depuis le tout début de l'histoire du pays. This Hindu holiday celebrates the coming of the gods and the spirits of the ancestors to the homes of their descendants, which welcome them by making offerings and dances. Because the calendar Indonesian Hindus follow is made of 210 days, there are often 2 Galungan every solar year. Lebaran marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is characterized by family gatherings, and you will hear Muslim say "mohon maaf lahir dan batin", meaning "Please forgive (me) outwardly and internally", because Idul Fitri is a time to ask for forgiveness for sins which they may have committed. Lebaran marque la fin du mois sacré du Ramadan. Il est caractérisé par des réunions de famille et vous entendrez les Musulmans dire “mohon maaf lahir dan batin”. Ceci signifie littéralement “Pardonnez-moi à l'extérieur aussi bien qu'à l'intérieur”. En effet, Eid-Ul Fitr est un moment pour demander le pardon pour des péchés qu'on aurait pu commettre.

December 25, 2016 Known as “Hari Raya Natal”, this Christian holiday celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. In Indonesia, celebrations vary across the regions. While in North Sumatra it is custom to sacrifice an animal, Toraja people hold the “Lovely December” festival, which consists of massive parades, culinary feasts and performances. Appelé “Hari Raya Natal”, cette festivité chrétienne célèbre la naissance de Jesus Christ. En Indonésie, les célébrations varient selon la région. Dans Sumatra du nord, il est usuel de sacrifier un animal, alors qu'à Toraja on organise le festival “Joli Decembre”, qui consiste en énormes processions, festins culinaires et spectacles.

Lombok people! Les Sasak – le peuple de Lombok!
Population: 3,600,000 Language/ Langue: Sasak Geography/Géographie: Lombok Religion: Islam (Wetu Telu), Islam (Waktu Lima), Bodha (Buddhist, Hindu and animistic influences/ influences animistes, hindouistes et bouddhistes)
Sasak people are originally from Lombok, where they represent the majority of the population. Ethnically related to the Balinese, they speak Sasak, a distinct language that has 9 different varieties. The Sasak language spoken in the Gilis is known as Gangga (Kutó-kuté). Sasak possesses a system of speech levels and, as Balinese and Javanese, social classes are reflected in lexical differences. In fact, Since the 14th century, Sasak society has been divided into castes. Intermarriage is allowed but a woman who marries a man of a lower caste loses her status. From the 16th century, the Sasak adopted a syncretic form of Islam (wetu telu), which blends Hindu-Bhuddist influences, Sunni Islam, animism and ancestral Gililife 58
worship. Today, Sasak are known for their traditional pottery, that is the famous technique of “turun temurun”, the typical architecture, namely the pile-built rice barn called “lumbung” and, of course, the “gendang beleq”, the Sasak version of the Balinese gamelan, a dance and music performance featuring drums, flutes and cymbals. At 3,142 above sea level, this is Bali's highest volcano and the most worshipped. There are many paths that bring to the top. You will start the trek during the night and reach at sunrise. The Tenggerese is an ethnic group of Hindu religion who lives in the area around the Bromo-TenggerSemeru National Park. The park offers a spectacular landscape of six volcanoes including Mount Bromo, the most popular and the spiritual heart of the area, and Mount Semeru, the highest mountain in Java at 3,676 mt. The Tenggerese arrived more than 500 years ago after the collapse of the Majapahit Empire, making their new home in this inhospitable land. Rugged volcanic peaks, gravel plains and a sea of sand are in fact characteristic of this area, which covers more than 5,000 hectares and includes four lakes and fifty rivers. In this stunning lunar-type environment, the Tenggerese maintain their Hindu and animist traditions, and walking up the steep slopes of the volcanoes witnessing the Tengger horsemen riding to the caldera is a must-do experience. Cemoro Lawang, the village where most of the 600,000 Tenggerese live, is located next to the crater of Mount Tengger and offers the best views of the area. Gililife 76

Tengger people are one of the few Hindu communities in Java, a region where most of the population is Muslim. They are believed to be the descendants of the Majapahit princes, who followed Hinduism. They typically have angular-shaped faces and are nomadic herders. Tenggerese managed to maintain their religious traditions, a blend of hindu and animist rituals and each village is represented by a dukun, a spiritual leader. The Yadnya Kasada Festival is the most important ceremony of the year. The legend says that the last descendant of the Kingdom of Tengger, was swallowed by an eruption of Mount Bromo because his parents refused to sacrifice him to the Great God. On the full moon of the 12th month (Kasada), the Tenggerese gather at the Poten, the sacred place in Mount Bromo, wearing their coloured dresses and throw offerings of fresh food and money into the caldera to appease the Great God

Mount Bromo is one of the most accessible volcanoes in Java. For this reason, as well for the extraordinary landscape, it attracts thousands of visitors every year. The area can be particularly crowded over the national holidays and during festivals. Caution is required because the volcanoes are active and often erupt, so it is important to assess the feasibility of the excursion before planning your trip. The weather is usually cool during the day and cold during the night, with temperatures dropping to zero degrees during dry season. Many parts of the park are not accessible during wet season, which runs from November to March. Because of the harsh environment, the flora biodiversity is limited to plants who can tolerate hard climatic conditions and the Java rusa deer, muntjac, marbled cat and wild pig are the most commonly sighted animals, while leopard cats are rarely spotted. This park includes the three main islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar and many smaller ones. Warung Padang - Gili Air
Warung is one of the words in Bahasa Indonesian you are likely to hear more often. Meaning “small restaurant”, in Indonesia and in Malaysia a warung is an institution that indicates local food at a cheap price and in a familiar atmosphere. This word does not indicate the speed the meal will be served and it can be a fast food restaurant or a slow pace one according to what you decide to eat. If you go for nasi campur (mix rice), you will just have to pick what you want from the dishes on display and eat it right away. If you go for the warung best sellers such as mie goreng (fried noodles), nasi goreng (fried rice) or soto ayam (chicken soup), you will have the time to crack into a couple of krupuk (rice crackers) and burn your lips sipping a teh manis panas (sweetened hot tea) before you get served. In case you are daring and order some Western dish on the menu, you may end up spending the whole day in the warung and eventually become a member of the local family who run the place!

Serves for 6 Pour 6 pers.
METHOD - PREPARATION Heat the oven at 180°. In a pan, pour 250g of sugar with the water and lemon juice, and let boil until it’s a caramel. In a cake pan, put a little bit of butter everywhere and pour the liquid caramel. In a bowl, mix together the flour, 120g of sugar, baking powder and the eggs, then add the melted butter. Pour this dough in the cake pan, and put in the oven for about 40 min. Let it cool and serve the cake with the caramel side on top. Préchauffer le four à 180°. Dans une casserole, verser 250g de sucre avec l'eau et le jus de citron, laisser cuire pendant 15 minutes jusqu'à obtention d'un caramel. Dans un moule légèrement beurré, verser le caramel liquide. Disposer l’ananas coupé en tranches sur le caramel. Dans un bol, mélanger la farine, 120g de sucre, la levure chimique puis les œufs, mélanger puis ajouter le beurre fondu. Verser la préparation dans le plat. Enfourner pour 40 min. Laisser refroidir puis démouler le gâteau et le servir avec le caramel au dessus.

id you know that if you happened to swallow a watermelon seed, a beautiful gourd could grow in your belly? Maybe you will tell me that it is just another tall story. But think again, because in the Gili islands a woman endowed with strange powers has developed this little joke to punish those who spend their time complaining. Indeed, some visitors are always criticizing everything: the beautiful islands, the friendly inhabitants or the tasty food, nothing is good enough for them. In this case, and if this person were to eat a piece of watermelon, which contains necessarily a tiny seed, misfortune will befall him during his stay. For each unpleasant comment, a long creeping stem will grow from his stomach up to his throat. For each absurd comparison, yellow flowers and pretty triangular leaves will come out of his mouth, which could be quite lovely in some way. Finally, if this person ever gets angry, he will literally suffocate in its own complains, because a beautiful watermelon will come out of his mouth. This spherical or completely oblong fruit, with its gorgeous dark green rind striped with white, will hopefully quench the visitor’s thirst for criticism. It is also the best way to make him quiet and polite! Saviez-vous que si vous avaliez une graine de pastèque, il allait pousser dans votre ventre une belle cucurbitacée ? Pure légende, me direz-vous. Détrompez-vous, car aux îles Gili une femme douée de pouvoirs étranges a mis au point cette petite plaisanterie pour punir ceux qui passent leur temps à se plaindre. En effet, certains visiteurs trouvent toujours à redire sur ces îles magnifiques, sur sa population accueillante ou sur sa nourriture savoureuse. Dans ce cas là, et si jamais cette personne venait à manger un morceau de pastèque, contenant forcément une toute petite graine, il va lui arriver des malheurs pendant son séjour. À chaque commentaire désagréable, une longue tige rampante va pousser dans son ventre et remonter dans sa gorge. À chaque comparaison désobligeante, des fleurs jaunes et de jolies feuilles triangulaires sortiront de sa bouche, ce qui à la rigueur peut être tout à fait ravissant. Enfin, si jamais cette personne venait à s’énerver, elle s’étouffera littéralement dans ses complaintes, car une belle pastèque lui sortira du bec. De forme sphérique ou complètement oblongue, de couleur verte foncée marbrée de blanc, cette baie que l’on nomme pépon pourra tout à fait désaltérer le visiteur assoiffé de critiques. C’est aussi le meilleur moyen de le faire taire, et de le rendre plus aimable !

On Gili Air public boats leave to Lombok starting at 7:30am. Meno to Lombok, twice a day, at 8am and 3pm. And on Gili T starting at 7am until 5pm. credit card in most dive centers and resort hotels, however, cash remains the only form of payment for most accommodation/food in The Gili's. BEWARE DON'T SWIM BETWEEN THE ISLANDS Bear in mind that the Gili Islands are exposed to open oceans and can have incredibly strong currents running between and around them, and trade winds which create choppy seas.
