THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 26

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 28

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 29 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island Gililife 30

where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the

GILI MENO

true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apano problem!!

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

ACTIVITIES

An exceptional MARINE WORLD FULL OF

beauty & biodiversity

SCUBADIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Gililife 34

Expect to swim with elegant white and black-tip sharks and friendly turtles, observe extravagant cephalopods and ghost pipe-fish hidden in plain sight and explore wrecks turned into the home of colourful fish schools! Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a soughtafter destination for muck diving.

There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SPECIES

This months' featured species

' Fromia Nodosa' Commonly known as

ELEGANT SEA STAR

Fromia nodosa, or elegant sea star, is found across the Western Indo-Pacific, from shallow waters to a maximum of 35mt of depth. Like other sea stars, it has five arms radiating from the centre of a body covered in large rounded plates. It is usually of a redorange colour, but can also be blue or purple. Mainly nocturnal, elegant sea stars prey on coral, molluscs and small marine organisms by pushing their stomach out and ingesting them externally.

Gililife 36

They can reproduce asexually, and a new star can develop from the arm of another star, of which it will bear the same DNA. They can also reproduce sexually by spawning, gathering in large groups and males and females releasing eggs and sperm at the same time.

DID YOU KNOW... Some sea stars protect their eggs by sitting on them or by keeping them between their arms.

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 38

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 40

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

41 Gililife

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 42

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 44

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

THE MOON

STRUCK BY

THE MOON Gililife 52

The transition from the brightness of a full moon to the darkness of a moonless night has fascinated peoples and influenced beliefs throughout history. The rhythms of the lunar cycles remain a vital reference for many cultures all over the world. Since the most ancient times, people have observed the waning and waxing of the moon and used these regular cycles to mark time. Even today, many cultures and religions follow the lunar calendar and attach important celebrations and customs to particular phases of the moon. Multicultural Indonesia is no exception and most religions practiced in the country greatly value the position of the moon in the sky. The Islamic and Hindu religions as well as the traditional Chinese culture follow different versions of a full or partial lunar calendar that determines the dates for religious festivities. For Muslims, the first day of the month corresponds to the rising of the new moon, and the Islamic calendar (or Hijri calendar) is a purely lunar calendar. The Balinese New Year, Nyepi, falls on the day after the dark moon of the spring equinox and also Christians follow the lunar cycles to determine when to celebrate Easter. In Indonesia, Vesak day - or the day the birth, enlightment and death of Gautama Buddha - is established by the Chinese lunar calendar; in Animist practices, certain days in lunar phases are considered particularly auspicious.

THE MOON

LUNAR

INFLUENCE ON

MARINE LIFE Gililife 54

As the moon waxes and wanes, and the tide ebbs and flows, many intertidal organisms meet and mate, breed and hatch, making the cyclical changes of the moon-phases and water levels an essential component of their life cycles. The lunar and tidal cycles affect the rhythm of life in many marine organisms where variations in environmental cues, such as light and tide levels, appear to influence their movement and behaviour. In fact, many animals’ biological rhythms tend to occur at regular intervals, in sync with cycles observed in nature. They are able to track these cyclic motions endogenously via a range of different mechanisms, allowing them to anticipate essential activities, such as reproduction. For instance, many animals tend to spawn during periods of high tides to increase chances of survival while others opportunistically

forage near the surface when the tides are low. Those that are subject to large fluctuations in temperature and exposure, such as organisms in the intertidal zone, adopt different feeding and life-history strategies in response to the extreme conditions. The regular flow of the tides creates a zone that is cyclically submerged by water or exposed to the sun according to the height of the tide. This is the intertidal or littoral zone and supports a rich variety of life forms. Different kinds of plants and animals benefit from changes in the water level and occupy the zone at different times accordingly. At high tide, the area is inhabited by aquatic creatures attracted by the nutrients and plankton brought in by the water. At low tide, the “shift changes and many terrestrial animals come to feed in the flats or in the shallow pools.

55 Gililife

THE MOON

CORAL SPAWNING

Corals are sessile animals, which means they are permanently attached to the substrate and not freemoving. This poses a challenge to fertilization; this is why some corals simultaneously release eggs and sperm in the sea. This event is known as “the mass synchronous coral spawning and it takes place once a year. For a few nights after the full moon, the sea is filled with gametes (eggs from the female) and clouds of sperm that drift in the water. After fertilization, currents carry the eggs to other areas, where the larvae will attach to the substrate and form new colonies of corals.

Gililife 56

GROUPERS SPAWNING

Many large fish species group together at particular times of the year to reproduce, forming the so-called spawning aggregations. Although specific reproductive habits differ according to the species and region, fishes usually meet at the same time and in the same place each year, often according to the moon phases. Some travel long distances to get to the “reproduction meeting on time! In Epinephelus sp., it has been observed that, during the spawning period that occurs from May to June, the quantity of eggs released in the water is higher before and after the new moon and is low near the full moon.

SEA ANEMONES

When the shore is exposed during low tide, living conditions become extreme. Few animals can tolerate the increasing heat, salinity and lack of water typical of an intertidal zone at low tide. Many move to deeper water or inland and wait for the tide to come back. But not all can move. For instance, sea anemone expand and contract according to the inflow of water. When the tide is low, sea pens retract into the sand and sea anemones fold their tentacles inward. When the water is up, they expand completely, resembling to beautiful underwater flowers with open petals.

DSM DIVE A SAFE & COOL FAMILY TO DIVE WITH! GILI TRAWANGAN Since LePrieur's first autonomous breathing device in the late 1920s, scuba diving has developed greatly, gradually refining equipment to make it more reliable, safer and user-friendly. Scuba diving is now a safe sport and a very popular recreational activity practiced across the world by people of different age and background. Today, scuba diving is a discipline codified by internationally recognised standards and wanna-be divers are taught everything they need to know about safety, how to avoid danger and accidents and what to do in case of an emergency. Proper training and compliance to safety standards limit the occurrence of accidents and there are some basic steps to keep your dive fun and safer. • Always check your gear, and know how to use every single piece of it! • Remember vital basic skills such as mastering buoyancy, using a buddy's alternate air source and what to do in case of an emergency. • Plan your dive and stick to it! This includes verifying the specific safety measures for each dive spot. • Don't hold your breath! This can lead to over-pressurization and lung over- expansion and lead to severe health conditions. • Respect your limits! Never dive if you do not feel comfortable or if you do not have the proper training. • Always ascend slowly to allow the nitrogen absorbed in your body to dissolve. • Apply the Rule of Quarters: use 2/4 of the air supply to go out, 1/4 to come back and 1/4 as a safety reserve. • Always dive with a buddy. Agree with your buddy depth and time in the water as well as hand signals.

63 Gililife

GILI ZOOM “It is easier to keep dives safe and fun when done it in small groups and with experienced, properly trained staff.” Greg, DSM owner said. Greg used to be a dive instructor at DSM in Gili Trawangan, and took over as a owner in December 2016. “I have always loved Asia” he said “but I chose to settle in the Gili islands for the general atmosphere among the dive centres, the atmosphere of the island and the diversity of the dive sites” he explained. Greg and his new team started from zero, changed the foreign team and kept all the local staff, some of whom have been teaching for over 10 years. He introduced a more structured organisation and

Gililife 64

changed the philosophy of the dive centre, which now prouds itself for being a small dive shop with attention for small groups and a personalised experience. Not only does the DSM team offer guests a cozy welcoming environment on and off the boat, but it also pays particular attention to safety, being very demanding during briefings and detailed in explaining safety regulations and in ensuring the equipment is always up-to-date and safe to use. Offering all courses from beginner to dive masters, groups are limited to 4 people per instructor and fun divers are always grouped by level.

LEARN TO DIVE & SHARE YOUR DIVE “At times, during my diving instructor career, I didn't even remember the name of my students, because groups were too big!” Greg said. This is one of the reasons that encouraged him to lead a dive centre that would be small, familiar and on a human scale. Indeed, diving with DSM is a bit like diving with your family and best buddies. While the small group size and the personalised experience allow to increase the level of teaching, the laid-back atmosphere at the shop encourages students and guides alike to share their experience and knowledge about diving. “Here it is not only about learning to dive, but also about sharing your dive!” Greg said with a smile. Indeed, at DSM, you will never feel like a “paying number” and you will receive an unparalleled training in safety skills!

GILI YO CREATE YOUR OWN FROZEN DELIGHT! GILI TRAWANGAN Yoghurt is believed to be originally from India and Central Asia, where over 8,000 years ago herdsmen started milking their animals. They soon discovered that the natural enzymes contained in the animals' stomach curdled the milk, which not only did give the milk an original and tasty flavour, but would also make it last longer. The product gradually spread through to other countries and peoples, mainly brought by Turkish merchands, who were the first to introduce this fresh and healthy food to the U.S. In the 1700. However, yoghurt did not gain popularity until after WWII and, since the 1960s, it has turned into a symbol of healthy food culture, coming in a range of varieties and flavours and becoming a common food item in many kitchens around the world. Indeed, yoghurt has many health properties; it is produced

by heating milk and adding active bacterial cultures to it once the milk has cooled down. These “friendly bacteria or probiotics, are usually Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria. They produce lactase, an enzyme that facilitates the digestion of lactose. Yoghurt is therefore tolerated by lactoseintolerant people. Morevover, yoghurt provides a good intake of protein, vitamin B12, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus among others. Many varieties of yoghurt exist, one of the freshest and tastiest recent being frozen yoghurt, which is a healthier version of an ice cream and is served in a range of styles and flavours. You can now enjoy a cup of frozen yoghurt in Gili Trawangan at Gili YO, the Gilis' first self-serve frozen yoghurt shop! 67 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Located in Pasar Seni, behind La Petite & Green CafĂŠ and just 50 metres from the jetty and the night market in Gili Trawangan, Gili YO officially opened on 20th April 2017, founded by some local frozen yogurt lovers who decided to make their favourite snack available to Gili Trawangan's international visitors. Designed with an island theme, the shop features bright summer colors, good lightings, colorful seating chairs, and a refreshing environment cooled down by air-con, which relieves from Gili Trawangan relenless heat. The idea was to give customers the freedom to create their own healthy and fresh snack, offering the possibility to choose among over 40 toppings to flavour the yoghurt produced on-site and directly supplied by the dispensers placed in the shop.

Gililife 68

Gili YO frozen yoghurt is made freshly every day, it has a creamy texture and sweet, tangy taste and, just as standard yoghurt, it contains probiotics, which have beneficial health effects. Frozen yoghurt has been sometimes compared to ice cream; however, Gili YO frozen yoghurt is much lower on calories and has no artificial colouring. It is also an excellent choice for celiacs, as it is a completely gluten-free product. Therefore, frozen yoghurt is a healthy alternative dessert and there’s less guilt than eating ice cream or gelato! Besides a clear conscience, frozen yoghurt also provides a lot of fun and the possibility to customize your own cup ensures you'll get exactly what you want!

Step By Step Do Your Own Frozen Yoghurt... Grab a a cup from a dispenser on the wall. Next to the cup dispenser are 2 two yogurt machines with two flavors and mix each. Two (plain & wild berries) of four flavors are always available; the rest are seasonal. Next to the yogurt machines, find a wall of extensive toppings and choose the ones you like from over 40 toppings! From dried fruits, cereals, chocolate, cookies to gummy bears, marshmallows and party mix or also fresh fruits, (chocolate, strawberry, blueberry, caramel) syrups, nutella, muesli, granola, and sprinkles. After choosing your toppings, head to the scale and cash register, where the friendly staff weighs your creation and takes payment. Yoghurt and toppings are sold at IDR 25.000 per 100 grams (IDR 250 per gram, included tax), a very affordable price! Enjoy with your friends and family!

In Indonesia, where over 30,000 species of medicinal plants have been recorded, natural beauty treatments are a millenary tradition. Indeed, traditional health and beauty care has always made great use of Indonesian unique biodiversity; herbal knowledge has been passed down from one generation to the next, reflected in village ceremonies and royal manuscripts and still practiced in today's Indonesia large spa business. The tradition of Jamu (mainly herbal medicine) is originally from Java, but everywhere in Indonesia jamu herbal medicines are used for a variety of ailments and treatments. Spices, leaves, fruits, barks and flowers are used and plants such

EKA JAYA FASTBOAT CONNECTING PEOPLE ACROSS THE WALLACE LINE BALI, GILI ISLANDS, LOMBOK "In this Archipelago there are two distinct faunas rigidly circumscribed, which differ as much as those of South America and Africa, and more than those of Europe and North America: yet there is nothing on the map or on the face of the islands to mark their limits. The boundary line often passes between islands closer than others in the same group. I believe the western part to be a separated portion of continental Asia, the eastern the fragmentary prolongation of a former Pacific continent. In mammalia and birds the distinction is marked by genera, families, and even orders confined to one region; in insects by a number of genera and little groups of peculiar species, the families of insects having generally a universal distribution." From an 1858 letter from Alfred Russell Wallace to Henry Walter Bates

75 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Never before the establishment of the speed boat service between Bali and Lombok has the crossing of the Wallace line been so fast and accessible. This has radically changed the profile of visitors to Lombok and the Gili Islands as well as the contacts of Lombok and Gili people to other areas of Indonesia such as Bali and Nusa Lembongan. Established in 2009, Ekajaya is one of the leading companies in the region. It started with a boat of a capacity of 50-65 passengers and now operates with Ekajaya 19, Ekajaya 20 and Ekajaya 23, connecting Bali, Lombok, Nusa Lembongan and the Gili Islands.

Gililife 76

Ekajaya boats are made of aluminium fast boat and respect international standards. The 3 boats currently operating have a capacity of 118 seats, the biggest one features 180 seats and uses a diesel machine and solar fuel, which is safer and environmentally friendly. Ekajaya boats are also known for being the most reliable among the many boat companies currently available, and the less bumpy! Indeed, the big size of their boats ensures a smoother and more pleasant journey. Book your trip at one of the many travel agencies on the Gili Islands, visit: www.baliekajaya.com or come to office at Setia Budi Street No. 18 Kuta, Badung, Bali, Ph. 03618496222

NORTH LOMBOK

SOUTH LOMBOK

WELCOME TO

BAYAN – MASJID KUNO Built in the 16th century, the Bayan Mosque is the oldest mosque in Lombok. It has woven bamboo walls and is built on stone foundation. It is located around 80 km from Mataram and is part of a very interesting and meaningful religious site.

GERUPUK Gerupuk is a small fishermen's village known for its peaceful life and surfing spots. If you love to surf or are looking for a white empty beach just for you, Gerupuk Bay is the perfect destination!

NATURE & ADVENTURE

TREKKING - RINJANI Mount Rinjani soars to 3726m above sea level (2nd highest volcano in Indonesia). The ascent does not require highly technical skills but rather determination! Start from Senaru, North Lombok, a site also known for its magnificient waterfalls.

LOMBOK

WATERFALLS - SENARU From the village of Senaru it takes 20 minutes walk to access the waterfalls. You can cross the valley and go down the 315 steps following the irrigation canals. Powerful waterfall, locals say that it must go behind to rejuvenate a year!

Gililife 84

KUTA Kuta is a small town famous for its surfing “beach break” and “reef break”. You can rent boards in several places and take lessons. Its beach is a beautiful and wide sandy cove surrounded by small hills. SELONG BLANAK Selong Blanak is a beautiful bay strewn with small shops. The main attraction is surfing, however swimming remains possible. The waves are perfect for beginners. You will easily find somewhere to rent a board for a few hours.

SOUTH LOMBOK

WEST LOMBOK

MORE LOMBOK

MAWUN Don’t miss Mawun beach under any circumstances! Located 20 minutes west of Kuta Lombok by scooter, the road there is beautiful and safe. You’ll travel alongside rice paddies and small traditional villages with typical "Sasak" houses.

SENGGIGI Senggigi is a bustling town on the West cost of Lombok littered with luxury hotels, restaurants, shops of all kinds, and a craft market. About ten kilometers on either side of the city there are beautiful beaches lined with coconut palms.

GILI GEDE Gili Gede is a tropical jewel. The lack of traffic and untouched nature are two of the main features of this island! The clear waters and abundant marine life guarantee fantastic snorkeling experience steps from your bungalow.

TANJUNG AAN The Tanjung Aan bay is huge with pristine, fine, white sand on one side, and on the other, a golden sandy beach with large grains. A central rock separates the two different beaches and you can climb it to admire the magnificent view! EKAS Renowned for its world-class surfbreaks and strong wind that blows all year round, this peninsula is the paradise for surfers and kite-surfers. Ekas also offers white beaches with pristine water on sandy bottoms!

MATARAM Mataram, the capital of Lombok has several sectors: Ampenan, the pear, Mataram, the administrative center, Cakra, the business center and Bertais-Sweta where the bus station is located. From the Gilis, take the monkey forest road and visit the Mall for a shopping session! BANYUMULEK The Sasak artisans of Lombok produce pottery for centuries and pass on their traditions from one generation to another. Visit one of the most important centers in Banyumulek where you will observe the manufacturing process and find a wide range of objects.

DESERT POINT Said to be "the best left in the world", Desert Point is an oasis for experienced surfers. Break is located near the village of Bangko-Bangko and produces powerful rollers that can be surfed up to 300m. The best season is from May to September. TETEBATU This small quaint town lies just south of Mount Rinjani National Park. Here you can experience real, traditional village life in Lombok, along with an array of cultural experiences and beautiful waterfalls.
