MIAMI VICE CASINO NIGHT DECEMBER 2017

Tir Na Nogs Miami Vice Charity Casino was held on the 27th November 2017, in aid of two organizations: The Gili Eco Trust, and Classroom of Hope. This 80s themed event raised over 100 million Rp for these two charities. Tir Na Nog was transformed into a fully operational casino with help from their staff and volunteers.

Over 100 prizes were donated from local businesses to be won by the lucky people who did well at the tables. The Island community came out in full force and fancy dress to play Poker, Black Jack, Roulette, and Plinko to raise money for these great charities. “Its about having a memorable night, getting dressed up, doing something different and raising money for not one but two amazing charities. Seth (owner Tir Na Nog) 19 Gililife

THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 26

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 28

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 29 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle, where time seems Gililife 30

to bend and life seems to slow down. Out of the three Gili’s, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by big crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet

GILI MENO

interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

SPECIES

This months' featured species

C. melanopterus

BLACKTIP REEF SHARK

Black tip sharks are one of the shark species you are most likely to spot in the Gili’s. As the name suggests, they can be recognised by the black coloured tip of their dorsal fin; they usually range between 90cm and 2m of length and can weight up to 14kg. They are usually found in shallow waters, coral reefs and bays and males and females tend to live separately, except of course during mating season. They mainly feed on small schooling fishes such as sardines and anchovies, but also go for larger species such as groupers and jacks. Like most shark species, they have a skeleton made of cartilage and a pectoral fin not fused to the

head and have amazing senses. Not only do they have a very acute sense of smell, but also an amazing sight, and can see in the dark thanks to the tapetum lucidum, a biologic reflector system that allows other vertebrates such as dogs and cats to be active at night. The lateral line, shark’s internal sense, allows them to feel movements in the water and the Ampullae of Lorenzini allows them to feel electromagnetic fields. All these senses are very useful for orientation and to detect prey.

Did you know? Black-tip shark can live up to 12 years in the wild.

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 38

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of revallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 42

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 44

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. Seasons in Indonesia

Gililife 50

"The best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain" HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

51 Gililife

THE SEASONS Gililife 52

Equatorial Climate at its best

Covering over 5,000 km, Indonesia is one of the largest archipelagoes in the world, with thousands of islands stretching along the equator. Indeed, most of the country has an equatorial climate, which means temperatures are quite stable throughout the year, ranging from 22°C to 32°C. However, it may feel much hotter because of high humidity ranging between 70% and 83%! The greatest difference in weather is not measured in a variety of temperatures, but it is measured in the amount of rainfall and the different impact of the monsoon regime. In fact, generally Indonesia experiences two major seasons:

wet and dry. The wet rainy seasons is characterised by hot and humid weather, with strong thunderstorms and occasional floods. The dry season is more or less marked according to the area and is typically the best time to visit Indonesia. For the most part, the best season to visit Indonesia is from May to September, as October to April are usually the rainiest months across the country. However, according to the area, the rainy season can be more or less strong. Some exceptions are Sumatra and Sulawesi, where the weather patterns and rainfall are slightly different. 53 Gililife

THE SEASONS Gililife 54

the

Monsoons Seasonal changes in the direction of winds, monsoon are the cause for wet and rainy seasons in the tropics. Monsoons are very important for agriculture, as they provide the much needed water for crops to grow after long dry seasons, filling wells for the rest of the year. Rice, for instance, is a crop that greatly relies on the monsoons. Although always blowing from colder to warmer regions, there are different types of monsoons: the summer and the winter monsoon. The summer monsoon mainly affects India and Southeast Asia, bringing torrential rainfalls and warm, moist air between the months of April to September. A balanced summer monsoon is essential for a country’s economy, as it allows crops to grow as well as electricity production. When the summer monsoon is too heavy, some areas can be devastated by mudslides

and flash floods and crops are destroyed. The winter monsoons lasts from October to March and blows from the Northeast, bringing moist air from the South China sea to Indonesia and Malaysia. In Indonesia, April and October are the transition months between the two monsoon periods, when winds are light and variable.

Did you know? Indonesia is located near the Equator and experiences a 12 hours long day almost all year round. The difference between the longest day and the shortest day of the year is maximum 48 minutes. 55 Gililife

ChilLi Island Radio HOT HITS & TRAVEL TIPS GILI ISLANDS & LOMBOK Since the radio was invented, its role has always been to bridge distances and connect people scattered around different geographical areas to relevant, interesting, useful as well as entertaining content. The advent of the Internet and social media has further advanced the move towards public participation, with streaming technology blurring the lines between listeners and media producers, content curators and content beneficiaries. Along with this transition, not only has the way content is conveyed changed, but also content itself, allowing for an increasing interactive relationship between radio stations and a wider, diverse international audience. In fact, the radio is not a mere entertainment medium, but has an immense potential as a social medium.

Today, also Lombok and the Gili’s islands have a dedicated radio fully connected to the interests and people living on the islands! In spite of unreliable infrastructure, difficult weather conditions and volatile internet connection, Chilli Island Radio provides 24-hour online tourist radio and information services, streaming classic hits as well as assisting local people with community projects. The website offers essential travel tips, dining out recommendations, live satellite surf reports, up to date flight arrivals and departures, news, sport and weather. Chilli Island Radio is a one stop multimedia platform promoting local businesses and community events throughout Lombok. 67 Gililife

GILI ZOOM The idea of Chilli Island Radio was born following the encounter of two distinct worlds: a few foreign residents of Lombok who wanted to create a service and information avenue for tourists and a small multimedia organisation, Focus Media, that had expertise in radio, web design and online services. Just like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle coming together, one connection led to another and soon the team from Fokus Media networked with some foreigners living in the region who were working with NGO’s and were former Radio Announcers. They jumped at the chance to help and delighted to become part of the Chilli Island Radio story. Since the beginning, the concept of Chilli Radio Project included a commitment to community development and the environment.Â

Gililife 68

In fact, while advertising revenue covers the station overheads, it also provides funding for community programs. This revenue is generated by contributions from local businesses and to a lesser degree by Government support. Moreover, content and tips on hot environmental topics (such as...plastic waste!) are constantly put forward, trying to convey an example for environmental and social awareness in the region. The intention is to connect sponsors, local organisations and tourists in order to encourage an increase in sustainable tourism on a pristine island. Indeed, the beauty of radio is the capacity to give something back to those who support the station by providing sponsors with on-air advertising to promote their business.

What does Chilli Island Radio support? Some of Chilli Island Radio projects include the support of turtle breeding and release programs in Lombok and visiting schools to promote the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment and introduce a plastic eradication program in each village by providing bins specifically for recycling. Â How to listen Chilli Island Radio? Chilli Island is always at your fingertips, listening to great music and info that prepares you for your day! You can download the App by searching Chili Island Radio on your Android or IPhone, or access through ITunes, or visit the website and Facebook Page. As long as you have 3G or wifi, you can listen anywhere! MISS GILI BY COCO BE HAPPY! BE A MISS GILI! GILI TRAWANGAN There is no reason why we should lower our fashion standards if living on the beachside. Indeed, always being ready to go to the beach doesn’t mean one should always walk around wearing a swimsuit or wrapped around a beach towel! Beachwear is defined as something in between swimwear, namely what people wear when they are bathing, and what they wear when fully clothed. In the fashion industry, beachwear started to gain recognition with the advent of the railway, which allowed more and more people to visit coastal areas on short day trips or longer vacations. The need of urban dwellers to find clothes and accessories that would be light to pack and comfortable to travel with encouraged fashion designers to create collections that would suit this practical necessity.

At the same time, both designers and beach-goers were looking for items that would also respond to fashion trends, making people feel good looking and in tune with the times. The Gili islands are the dream destination for beachwear lovers. Hopping between the sunbed and a beach party is how most people spend their days here! This lifestyle requires clothes that can be laid-back and comfortable to wear while at the same time being fashionable and offering the possibility to be ready to wear any time! Miss Gili by Coco perfectly suits all these needs. Conceptualised and created in the Gili islands, this collection is designed for girls who want to feel beautiful – and happy – at the beach and anywhere else!

71 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Coco grew up by the beach side in Southwest France and spent many years living on California’s sunny beaches before moving to Bali and eventually to the Gili’s. It is not surprising then that the need to find clothes that would suit this lifestyle came early in her mind, especially considering her passion for making clothes! “I never followed fashion just because everybody followed fashion! I had my style which was always close to beachwear, very girly, sport-chic & feminin.” Coco explained. “Bali is incredible for shopping but I never really found the perfect dress for me...so I started to create my own!” she added. “Often girls would come to me and say: "I love your dress...where did you buy it ? So I decided to create a collection for all these girls who like my dresses!”

Gililife 72

Coming in a variety of models, colours and designs, Miss Gili is the perfect dress for the next beach destination, that suit women of all ages and shapes and can be combined with beach accessories such as matching bags, towels and hats! From “La Gili Beach” to “La Gili Shell” and “La Gili Pompon”, there is a model for all occasions and all dresses are feminine, pretty, easy to wear, easy to wash and easy to carry in your luggage. “A girl in a MissGili dress is a beautiful and happy girl...because when a girl feels beautiful...she is happy!” Coco said with a smile.

Each dress is personally designed by Coco and carefully sown by experienced tailors, who add pearls, pompons and shells by hand to the final product. You can find Miss Gili boutique at Villa Gili Bali Beach in Gili Trawangan. Located on the island’s sunset side, this beautiful villa will also soon host a beach bar featuring lounge music and host Yoga & Wellness retreats. Miss Gili is also traveling the world and you will soon also find her in the Reunion island, in the Mauritius and in Martinique. Do you want to be a Miss Gili Ambassador? VILLA SAÏA YOUR COCOON HOLIDAY GILI AIR

When going on holiday, the destination is only one of the things to consider. The choice of the atmosphere we want to breathe when we come back from a chilled day at the beach or from a physically demanding excursion is decisive to a successful and pleasant stay. Indeed, boutique hotels and small-scale properties are increasingly gaining popularity on the international market, mostly for the intimate setting and attentive customer service they are able to offer compared to large resorts and hotel chains. The opportunity to live a retreat within a retreat and enjoy a personal luxury holiday is one of the reason why choosing a private pool villa in a small property is a safe bet. In addition, small and independently owned

hotels are often characterised by a unique design and identity, providing guests with extra dedicated care, as they are able to adapt their offer to the latest trends and to guests’ specific wishes. Although Gili Air is already a “cocoon” destination, choosing VILLA SAÏA is a sure shot to enjoy a self-contained private haven where to feel even more pampered in your own private world. Offering a simply precious tropical vacation experience, VILLA SAÏA spoils its guests with an excellent customer service and by the casual luxury private setting, all this set against the backdrop of the most homely and friendly of the three Gili islands. 75 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Located in the heart of Gili Air, a few minutes walk from the island’s best snorkelling spots and from the local village, VILLA SAÏA is a small property composed of 3 one-bedroom private pool villas. Owners Cindy, Lise and Rodolphe came to the island as dive instructors and decided to stay, charmed by the laid-back and friendly atmosphere of the Gili’s. The idea was to create a casual luxury place where guests would enter another space, their own world and private cocoon. “We wanted guests to feel in their private bubble as they came in, spoiled by the staff and with enough space to breathe and feel at ease.” Cindy explained. Indeed, each villa features a spacious room, a big open bathroom, a dining area, a wooden deck, a plunge pool and a terrace, offering different spaces in 1 in order to maximise the indoor and outdoor area.

Gililife 76

VILLA SAÏA features a simple, elegant and clean design yet keeps a local touch thanks to the alangalang roof and the locally crafted decoration. The white, grey and light blue colour scheme adds to the feeling of comfort and coziness, while the luscious gardens in all villas and small important details highlight the owners’ environmental awareness. Guests can have unlimited free water refills, little plastic is used on the property and biodegradable soaps are on-site, both for guests and for cleaning purposes. Whether you’re honeymooning, scuba diving or just looking for a place to unwind and relax, VILLA SAÏA is the ideal cocoon to welcome and spoil you within your holiday!

A personalised cocoon The small dedicated team and the particular attention to customer service is certainly what distinguishes VILLA SAÏA from other similar properties in the Gili’s. The customised experience starts for breakfast, when guests can choose among three yummy different options and adapt them to their specific tastes (vegan and vegetarian menus available). During the day, guests can choose if getting pampered in their cocoon and enjoy the villa or approach the staff to exchange tips and preferences for a personal holiday experience. “The cocoon experience can last all day; guests can have their food delivered from the restaurant of their choice as we provide the plates and cutlery with our luxury service.” Cindy explained. “We are always here at complete disposal, our passion is taking care of our guests and creating an experience beyond the product.” She added with a smile.

Ekas also offers white beaches with pristine water on sandy bottoms!

BANYUMULEK The Sasak artisans of Lombok produce pottery for centuries and pass on their traditions from one generation to another. Visit one of the most important centers in Banyumulek where you will observe the manufacturing process and find a wide range of objects.

GILI FRUIT

CASHEW NUT Originally from Brazil, the cashew tree is widely cultivated in Indonesia, where it is an important crop, representing 15% of the world’s production. The tree grows in a variety of environments and can grow up to 12 metres. The cashew apple is an edible yellow-reddish pear-shaped fruit that is commonly consumed as a drink. The cashew nut is the seed enclosed in the shell at the bottom of the cashew apple. The shape of a crescent moon, the cashew nut can reach up to 2-3 cm of length; it has a crunchy texture and is commonly consumed raw or added to savour curries and make yummy desserts. Cashew were introduced in Indonesia in the 1970s and are mainly grown in the East of the country. In Lombok and the Gili’s, the harvesting season is September to November. Watch Out! The shell enclosing the cashew nut is toxic to humans! Before they are sold on the market, cashews are roasted to destroy the toxin and the nut is always extracted from the shell!

HEALTH BENEFITS NUTRIENTS: 100 grams of cashew nuts contain over 500 calories! HEART: Cashews are cholesterol free and are low in fat compared to other nuts BONES: Cashews are an abundant sources of magnesium which, together with calcium, protects and strengthens the bones DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: The high content of zinc helps many enzymes that support digestion NERVES: Magnesium keeps the blood vessels and muscles relaxed and prevents headaches and high blood pressure Gililife 86
