ISSUE No. 48 FEBRUARY 2018 This month Gili Life pays tribute to one of Indonesia’s most sought-after resources: wood or, more specifically, teak wood. Wood is a special material and teak is one the world’s most valued hardwood species. Unfortunately, this preciousness has caused indiscriminate logging and today most teak wood available comes from controlled plantations. However, a lot of teak wood is available in old buildings or furniture no longer used, so get recycled wood instead if you really want to enjoy the qualities of teak wood! Browse our pages and you will also discover some unique businesses! Explore Casa Vintage stunning collection of clothes and breathe healthy food and great music at their rooftop cafe; go for the freshest fish at Camilla Resort, where the green landscape goes hand in hand with traditional architecture; discover Ayurveda at Devaya in Lombok, where you can find the only authentic Ayurvedic treatment in the region and engage in Meditation with Feedback at Freedive Flow, the freedive school made by freedivers for freedivers!

BAU NYALE FESTIVAL LOMBOK

This annual festival is an ancient tradition where people, both local and tourists alike, flock to capture the rare Nyale sea worms. The caught worms are then used as bait and as a culinary delicacy for the locals. This year's celebration will be centered along Seger Beach in Kuta Lombok village in Pujut Sub-district, Pantai An, Selong, Mawun, Mawi etc. The festival normally starts around 16th - 20th February 2018.

Princess Mandalika According to local legend, Princess Mandalika of Tunjung Beru kingdom had a very beautiful face. Her father, King Seg held a contest for the youth to fight for his daughter's hand in marriage. However, Mandalika herself opposed the quarrels and bloodshed between kingdoms. In order to stop the fighting, she plunged into the sea, advising people in Lombok to live in peace. She promised to return on the 20th day of the tenth month in the Sasak calendar. Only on this long-awaited day can the glowing Nyale worms can be seen everywhere in the sea and therefore, people believe that the worm is the reincarnation of Princess Mandalika. 19 Gililife

THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 26

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 28

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 29 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle, where time seems Gililife 30

to bend and life seems to slow down. Out of the three Gili’s, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by big crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet

interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! SPECIES

This months featured species

The

OCTOPUS

Some of the most intelligent underwater invertebrates, octopuses are molluscs belonging to the Cephalopods group. They have 8 tentacles and a big head with globulous eyes. They are known for their ability to escape predators with a variety of techniques, the most amazing probably being camouflage. In fact, some species can change colour and even texture of their mantle to completely blend with the surrounding environment. Some species eject dark ink to confuse predators and some let go of a tentacle if a predator tries to grab it. A new tentacle will soon regrow. They hunt by grabbing prey with their tentacles and using

Gililife 36

the suctions on their arms to bring it to their mouth. They feed on crustaceans, other mollusks and small invertebrates, which they usually hunt at night. They can be found in cold and warm waters across the world at a variety of depths. When on the reef or on the ocean floor, they move by crawling, whereas when in open sea they blast water through their siphon and can move to up to 40km/h!

Did you know? Experiments have demonstrated that some species of octopus are able to develop short and long term memory and can solve puzzles!

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 38

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of revallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 40

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 42

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 44

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! TEAK Gililife 50

Wood is a fascinating material, unparalleled in its beauty and functionality. Delve into the specifics of Teak wood, one of Indonesia's most sought after resources

TEAK

51 Gililife

TEAK

INDONESIA'S

PRECIOUS WOOD

Gililife 52

Whether burnt for heat, carved for construction or worshipped as sacred, wood is no ordinary material. Mankind has exploited its countless properties for thousand of years; even today, wood remains one of the most valued natural materials available. Naturally protecting from heat, light and electricity, wood provides support, shelter, shade and coolness as well as warmth. Wood floats, is light and strong; it can amplify, absorb and produce sound. Some types of timber are naturally fire resistant; some are soft and flexible enough to be easily bent and carved. Wood is a live element; it ages with time and reacts to the surrounding environment by shrinking and expanding according to temperature and humidity. For these and other amazing qualities, wood has always been regarded as a unique material having a special status. In many cultures, trees are a symbol of stability and strength and the wood originating from these trees often carries a similar, strong symbolic value. The qualities of wood have also been the reason for its indiscriminate use; nowadays, this once widely and cheaply available resource has become a pricey material that is more and more rare. Out of all the hundreds of species of hard wood, teak is one of the most precious and valued. Also known as “Iron Wood for its unparalleled strength and durability, it is a great building material for houses and bridges and its floating properties make it an ideal material for boats. Being snow, water and fungi resistant, it is widely used for outdoor construction and it is not rare to find buildings built in teak that are many centuries old and teak beams of over 1,000 years old!

53 Gililife

TEAK Gililife 54

THE

PLANT Native to India and Myanmar, Teak, is a slow-growing tree with a brownish gray bark, a spreading crown and opposite leaves that can be 50cm long and 23 cm wide. It generally does not grow in coastal areas but prefers low hills below 1,000 mt. It produces a drupe fruit (fleshy with stony seed) and its wood typically retains a strong and aromatic fragrance. Did you know? Muna in South Sulawesi is historically known for its cultural and economic ties with the teak wood industry. On the island, monuments have been erected to majestic teak trees and roads have been named after this precious species of tree. The different meanings of the word jati (teak) “Jati-diri is used in Bahasa Indonesia to mean “identity”, “personality”, “the true, authentic self” or, most accurately, “the essence of self”. “Sejati”, is taken to mean “pure”, “true”, “original”, “genuine”.

SOURCES Illegal deforestation is a big issue in Indonesia. Always verify the source of the timber you buy!

KALIMANTAN

SUMATRA

JAVA

The World Resource Institute reports that in the past 15 years Indonesia lost about 1.3 million hectares of forest annually, 40% of which were primary forests. This is about the size of Europe! Kalimantan and Sumatra are the islands in Indonesia with the largest forest area and the ones most affected by deforestation. These islands are also the native regions of orangutans, whose population has drastically decreased due to habitat loss. Being a big island with a big forested area, Lombok has also suffered from indiscriminate illegal logging.

Gililife 56

In fact, in spite of the forest moratorium established in 2011 and aimed at limiting deforestation, not much effect in forest clearing prevention have been recorded. Most of the forest clearance is due to agriculture, namely to make space to palm oil plantations. Deforestation has a dramatic impact on a variety of factors: it increases greenhouse gas emissions, causes habitat loss for millions of species and has uncountable chain effects on our lives as well. No trees means greater risk of landslides and flash floods and higher temperatures.

Estimates of national and sub-national forest cover extent and loss. TEAK

THE

QUALITIES OF TEAK STABLE, DURABLE AND BEAUTIFUL

When considering the properties of a wood species and assessing the way it will be used, experts look at:

Appearance How it looks (dark or light, more or less grained)

Stability If it shrinks or expands with time and temperature

Durability Resistance to the elements

PRESENCE OF LIGNIN MAKES IT STRONG CELLULOSE GIVES IT GREAT FLEXIBILITY LOW DENSITY ALLOWS IT TO FLOAT IN THE WATER HIGH CONTENT OF NATURAL OILS PRESERVES IT FROM ROTTING AND DEVELOPING FUNGI NATURAL OILS ALSO PROTECT IT FROM THE DAMAGES OF WATER AND FROST, MAKING IT WATER-RESISTANT IT IS A NON-RESINOUS TIMBER, THEREFORE IT IS FIRE RESISTANT BEING VERY CLOSE GRAINED IT CAN BE CUT AND CARVED VERY ACCURATELY Teak score high in all these traits, this is why this material has been indiscriminately and unsustainably exploited. Teak wood was once widely available and cheap, but has now become expensive and rare. In Indonesia, teak is an increasingly threatened resource. If you buy teak wood, make sure it comes from a legal plantation! However, consider building with Rattan or Bamboo instead, or using less threatened hardwood species such as Merbau, Balau, Merbanti or Raju Mas. Illegal deforestation is a big issue in Indonesia! Always verify the source of the timber you buy!! Gililife 58

Devaya Ayurveda THE AUTHENTIC AYURVEDIC TREATMENT SENGGIGI - LOMBOK Ayurveda, or the science of life (from Ayur = life and Veda = science, knowledge) is an ancient holistic healing system that originated in India thousands of years ago. Based on the principle that health is our natural state of being, all treatments aim at restoring a peaceful mind and a body clear of toxins in order to achieve balance and our full potential through happiness, vitality and inner well-being. In fact, according to Ayurveda, diseases are caused by the accumulation of toxins not appropriately disposed of by a stressed and confused mind and a tired and weakened body. A weakened system is vulnerable to diseases, which can evolve into serious damage to our heath and happiness. Ayurvedic treatments can reverse this process by applying some adjustments to our daily

habits according to our “dosha”, or body type. According to Aurvedic medicine, there are 3 types of “dosha”: kapha (related to the earth element), pitta (related to the fire element) and vata (related to the air element). All human beings have a predominant dosha according to their genetic predisposition, age and environment and should eat and live accordingly, knowing that the goal is to be as balanced as possible, limiting the excesses of our natural disposition by adopting the most appropriate lifestyle to our specific and personal situation. Ayurveda is a unique, natural, holistic, health-giving series of therapeutic treatments that cleanse the body’s deep tissues of toxins, open the subtle channels, bring life-enhancing energy thereby increasing inner peace, resilience and self-esteem. 63 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Opened in March 2016, Devaya Ayurveda is the only place in the Lombok and the Gili Island’s area that offers authentic Ayurvedic treatments according to the traditional procedure and with experienced and certified therapists. Located on Lombok’s northwest coast, this centre offers a personalised experience in a private and peaceful environment right in front of the ocean. Ayurvedic expert Daniela ensures each patient is carefully taken care of, with a daily routine of treatments according to his or her specific needs and body constitution. Daniela studied Ayurveda in Sri Lanka and before coming to Indonesia she treated thousands of patients in her Ayurvedic clinic in Germany for over 14 years. After experiencing the benefits of Ayurvedic medicine on her own body and mind, she decided to dedicate her

Gililife 64

life to treat people according to the principles of this ancient and holistic healing system. “Ayurveda sees the person, not the illness” she said. “This is fascinating and, most of all, effective! In fact, not only does the treatment varies from person to person, but also from day to day, as the body changes constantly.” She explained. During the first consultation, Daniela takes a careful look at patients’ physical body and talks to them, in order to assess the patients’ dosha and most immediate needs, giving them suggestions and possible home remedies. Daniela selects the appropriate oil and recommends the most adapted food and daily routine to each case. Most oils come from Sri Lanka, while treatment products are all freshly made with locally-sourced ingredients such as moringa and papaya leaves.

Ayurvedic Cooking Classes Devaya Ayurveda offers vegan & raw cooking classes upon request. Ayurvedic food principles are shared to groups to up to 10 people in a 4-hour class that include a theory and a practice session at the end of which everyone eats together what has been prepared. Did you know? According to Ayurveda, the body is made up of 5 elements – space, air, water, fire and earth. All of us have all the five elements in our body, but in different proportions. The “dosha” reflects the dominant element in our body and a disease is due to an imbalance of these elements. Doshas influence a person’s temperament, mood, emotional reactions as well as his/her food likes and dislikes. They also provide indications on a person’s physical traits and physiological behaviour. Want to know more? Ask Daniela at Devaya Ayurveda for a personal consultation!

CASA VINTAGE DELIVERING HAPPINESS FOR BODY AND MIND GILI TRAWANGAN Who of us has not given up on clothes we loved just because they were gone out of fashion? At the same time, how many of us remember scouring dusty attics and discover grandma’s boxes full of fashion treasures? The cyclical renovation of fashion trends is just apparent, as in fact many trends never truly disappear, they just temporarily take a break to reemerge some years later. And when they do re-emerge, they do it grandly! Vintage clothes, are in fact more than old used clothes and more than unworn clothes. They are special and unique. Clothes manufactured before the advent of polyester and mass-market fashion were made to last and quality was considered over quantity. Not only fabrics were chosen for their resistance, but much attention was given to details such

as buttons and prints. Vintage clothes are increasingly gaining popularity among celebrities, who appreciate the uniqueness of the garment they are wearing because they know the chances of meeting someone with the same dress on the red carpet are close to none! Indeed, every vintage garment is a treasure that holds history, art and uncountable stories that new clothes surely do not have. Another good news about vintage clothes is that you don’t need to be a millionaire to own a luxury brand dress or a one-of-a-kind shirt. You just need to explore markets and thrift stores! The closest one to the Gili’s islands? Casa Vintage in Gili Trawangan, a real treasurechest of quality vintage clothes! 67 Gililife

GILI ZOOM “I didn’t like the fact that, to be in fashion, every year you need to throw everything and buy again.” Nathalie, owner and creator of Casa Vintage in Gili Trawangan said. “I started going through my grandma’s old stuff; she traveled a lot, had a strong connection to Africa and she thought me about quality and differences in fabrics.” Nathalie added. Before moving to Indonesia, Nathalie ran a vintage business in Sweden for years. “Our vintage shop was more than a clothes store. It was a meeting place for artists, we would organise events, photo exhibitions and have a lot of fun” she remembered. This concept was adapted to Gili Trawangan’s beach life and Casa Vintage was created. Eight years on, today Casa Vintage is a place

Gililife 68

that celebrates art & culture through quality old school garments, healthy food and good music. Open from 9am to 10pm, Casa Vintage has become a meeting place, where people meet at the vintage style shop downstairs or at the rooftop cafe upstairs. “I wanted to create something I missed and that I love having in my life.” Nathalie explained. “We sell recycled clothes in natural fabric when possible, we serve mainly vegan and vegetarian food and we’ll soon have regular jazz & soul music acoustic sessions. I wanted to create more culture on the island, bring more music, more art, bring cultural exchange and new music trends while being sustainable!” she added.

Gili Life Recommends Located away from the hustle & bustle of Central Gili T, Casa Vintage welcomes people looking for culture, good food and good vibes in a peaceful and inspirational environment! Casa Vintage selection of clothes is simply stunning and you are likely to spend hours browsing through their silk kimonos and vintage denim shorts, army jackets and linen dresses. All washed, clean and fresh, mostly in silk, linen and good quality fabrics, Casa Vintage garments are a real deal! Once finished with your shopping, or in order to make the hard decision of what to bring home, have a look upstairs on the breezy terrace and indulge in the healthy menu. You cannot leave without trying the bestseller oreo cheesecake, but if you want to stay light, pick the rice paper rolls or the golden stew, a heartening coconut and lentil soup, accompanied by a cappuccino made as it should be or a nutritious smoothie!

FREEDIVE FLOW MEDITATION WITH FEEDBACK GILI AIR "Sometimes when I am down there I go into a flow state and I cannot remember anything, as if it was a dream" MJ, manager and senior instructor at Freedive Flow said. "The name of the shop refers to this incredible state of mind we freedivers all love to achieve, this 'meditation with feedback' as Oli likes to call it" he added. MJ’s ginger hair and slackline skills are well known island-wide, as is his love and passion for freediving, which saw him leaving native South Africa to explore Indonesia’s warmer and friendlier waters. “When I was a kid I could naturally equalise and was able to go down to 5mt without much

effort. I learnt to spearfish in Cape town and I have always been comfortable in the water.” He explained. MJ met Freedive Flow owner and instructor trainer Oli Christen when Freedive Flow was still being built. MJ’s freediving skills were immediately noticed and the leap to become instructor and then shop manager was fast and obvious. Today, Freedive Flow is one of the few dive shops in the Gili’s islands to be specialised in Freediving. Every detail is conceived for the comfort and ease of freedivers. From the dedicated boat, the long pool without steps to the wide range of masks and long fins available, Freedive Flow is a centre made by freedivers for freedivers.

71 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Located on the main road 50mt walk from Gili Air harbour, Freedive Flow offers courses from beginner to instructor training level, both AIDA and PADI. The school’s specialisation in instructor development makes a difference in the training quality of all courses, which are conceived to train everyone as if they were to become instructors. Strict standards and rescue procedures are implemented from Day 1 and instructors focus on each student’s personal development, while teaching them to take care of each other by diving with a buddy in the safest and most appropriate way. “We teach relaxation based freedive, which is the safest way to freedive.” MJ said. “This type of breathing is applied to all disciplines and it is the same type of

Gililife 72

breathing you have when you are about to go to sleep. Automatic, diaphragmatic breathing. You are not supposed to think about breathing. That’s what you want to do when you freedive.” He explained. This technique is something automatic that we can all develop if we practice it consistently and allows for longer, calmer and more effective dives. The name Freedive Flow actually comes from this “flow state” of being while freediving, this “meditation with feedback” state that takes over underwater when one is relaxed. “Sometimes I cannot remember the dive, I go into a flow state, a survival response, then in a snap of a second I am breathing and I realise I am back at the surface.” MJ added with a smile.

MJ recommends to wanna-be freedive champions: Often if you have the pressure to fulfill a goal, you fail. Relax, just enjoy and don’t think about numbers : you will go beyond your limits! Numbers will come by themselves! From absolute beginners to advanced trainees and wanna be instructors, everybody will find ways to challenge their skills and go beyond their limits. Approach Oli or MJ at Freedive Flow or visit www.freediveflow.com to find the right training for you!

CAMILLA RESORT COMFORT, TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE, GREEN LANDSCAPE AND....SUSHI! GILI AIR Imagine Italian eye for design and cuisine, Indonesian stunning and beautiful traditional architecture, Japanese culinary culture and refined dishes and Gili Air tropical beaches. Blend all this with a charming & modern interior design, a laid-back atmosphere and a very well curated landscaping and there you have Camilla, the resort with the appeal of the small village, the quality food of a Michelin restaurant and the natural feeling of an eco-friendly property. Created by a group of Italian friends with experience in architecture, hospitality, cuisine and bartending, Camilla is located in the North of the island, in a very quiet area surrounded by coconut trees and about 300 metres from the beach. The architects

decided to integrate in the design the gladak, one of Indonesian most iconic examples of vernacular architecture in order to limit the visual impact of the property on the environment. Gladak are rectangular buildings original from Java distinct from other traditional buildings such as Joglos or Lumbung for the shape of the roof, the big columns and the pair of parallel beams sourced from a single trunk. “The leading concept is to reduce cement in favour of recycled wood and celebrate Indonesia’s architectural heritage.” Manuele, one of the architect who designed Camilla said. The result is a beautiful and cozy property that caters for those who love discovering the culture of place they’re visiting but do not want to renounce to modern amenities.

75 Gililife

GILI ZOOM After welcoming visitors in a cozy bamboo reception, a green tunnel made of flowering bouganvillae brings them to a secluded “village” composed of 6 gladaks, of which 3 are real ones brought from Java and 3 were re-made following the original models. A big 3 bedroom villa built on stilts completes the picture, ideal for family and larger groups. Both the gladak and the large villa feature a private pool; the interiors reflect modern tastes and comply with Western comfort standards, featuring a wooden design and amenities adjusted to tourists’ needs. The property continues on the beach, where 3 beach bungalows surrounded by a green and well curated landscape cater for those who need to see the sea as they wake up. Camilla Beach Club is the perfect location to spend a lazy day on the beach enjoying a wonderful landscape and great food. Specialised in fish and seafood, the restaurant features an aquarium with live lobsters, so you are sure they come straight from the

Gililife 76

water to your plate! On the menu, it is all about fish. From revisited dishes of Italian, Japanese and Indonesian cuisine, to fusion sushi and a nightly barbecue where only fresh fish has the right to take part, Camilla beach club is a guarantee for high-quality food and Camilla Resort is the ideal balance of what you are looking for on your tropical holiday: exclusive yet affordable, remarkable yet easygoing, on a world-class beach location! NO PARTY! Camilla Resort is famous islandwide for its “No Party” afternoons, when from 4 to 8 pm the Beach Club hosts happy music, good vibes and daytime dance on the beach. A family friendly event, No Party at Camilla are becoming a sunset must-go gathering for local expats and tourists alike. Check their Facebook page to know when the next one is taking place!

Gili Life Recommends Enjoy the sunset with a signature cocktail such as Purple Ceiling or Tropical Mojito while indulging in a nice sushi platter with ber muda tempura [nori slices and raw tuna], bombay roll and why not, accompanied by some edamame! Pick the quinoa salad with goji berries if you want to stay light and do not restrain from choosing your lobster or udang kipas! Looking for a sweet note? No doubt, go for the Camilla Nest, a yummy nestshaped pastry stuffed with fruit, ice cream and a choco stick

WELCOME TO

BAYAN – MASJID KUNO Built in the 16th century, the Bayan Mosque is the oldest mosque in Lombok. It has woven bamboo walls and is built on stone foundation. It is located around 80 km from Mataram and is part of a very interesting and meaningful religious site.

GERUPUK Gerupuk is a small fishermen's village known for its peaceful life and surfing spots. If you love to surf or are looking for a white empty beach just for you, Gerupuk Bay is the perfect destination!

NATURE & ADVENTURE

TREKKING - RINJANI Mount Rinjani soars to 3726m above sea level (2nd highest volcano in Indonesia). The ascent does not require highly technical skills but rather determination! Start from Senaru, North Lombok, a site also known for its magnificent waterfalls.

LOMBOK

WATERFALLS - SENARU From the village of Senaru it takes 20 minutes walk to access the waterfalls. You can cross the valley and go down the 315 steps following the irrigation canals. Powerful waterfall, locals say that it must go behind to rejuvenate a year!

Gililife 84

KUTA Kuta is a small town famous for its surfing “beach break” and “reef break”. You can rent boards in several places and take lessons. Its beach is a beautiful and wide sandy cove surrounded by small hills. SELONG BLANAK Selong Blanak is a beautiful bay strewn with small shops. The main attraction is surfing, however swimming remains possible. The waves are perfect for beginners. You will easily find somewhere to rent a board for a few hours.

SOUTH LOMBOK

WEST LOMBOK

MORE LOMBOK

MAWUN Don’t miss Mawun beach under any circumstances! Located 20 minutes west of Kuta Lombok by scooter, the road there is beautiful and safe. You’ll travel alongside rice paddies and small traditional villages with typical "Sasak" houses.

SENGGIGI Senggigi is a bustling town on the West cost of Lombok littered with luxury hotels, restaurants, shops of all kinds, and a craft market. About ten kilometers on either side of the city there are beautiful beaches lined with coconut palms.

GILI GEDE Gili Gede is a tropical jewel. The lack of traffic and untouched nature are two of the main features of this island! The clear waters and abundant marine life guarantee fantastic snorkeling experience steps from your bungalow.

TANJUNG AAN The Tanjung Aan bay is huge with pristine, fine, white sand on one side, and on the other, a golden sandy beach with large grains. A central rock separates the two different beaches and you can climb it to admire the magnificent view! EKAS Renowned for its world-class surfbreaks and strong wind that blows all year round, this peninsula is the paradise for surfers and kite-surfers. Ekas also offers white beaches with pristine water on sandy bottoms!

MATARAM Mataram, the capital of Lombok has several sectors: Ampenan, the pear, Mataram, the administrative center, Cakra, the business center and Bertais-Sweta where the bus station is located. From the Gilis, take the monkey forest road and visit the Mall for a shopping session! BANYUMULEK The Sasak artisans of Lombok produce pottery for centuries and pass on their traditions from one generation to another. Visit one of the most important centers in Banyumulek where you will observe the manufacturing process and find a wide range of objects.

DESERT POINT Said to be "the best left in the world", Desert Point is an oasis for experienced surfers. Break is located near the village of Bangko-Bangko and produces powerful rollers that can be surfed up to 300m. The best season is from May to September. TETEBATU This small quaint town lies just south of Mount Rinjani National Park. Here you can experience real, traditional village life in Lombok, along with an array of cultural experiences and beautiful waterfalls.

GILI FRUIT

BAMBOO Traditionally used in Asia and in the Americas as a building material as well as a medical plant, bamboo is an evergreen fast-growing plant with uncountable uses and that grows everywhere and adapts to any climate. From houses to food and clothes until natural medical remedies, bamboo is an enduring plant that can be used for almost anything! Over 1,500 species are distributed on every continent and this plant is increasingly considered a sustainable alternative to rainforest wood. Bamboo grows an average of 10cm per day and is one of the strongest woody plants on the planet.

THE MIRACLE PLANT Ayurvedic and Chinese Traditional medicine make great use of bamboo for a variety of treatments, and modern research has confirmed this plant’s healing powers. The roots of a species of black bamboo is used to treat asthma. Some leaves have been reported being used to treat some types of cancer. Bamboo fabric is breathable and totally biodegradable. In many Southeast Asian cultures, bamboo is associated with flexibility and resistance and it is used in traditional ceremonies. Bamboo is an edible plant and the exclusive diet of giant pandas, while bamboo shoots are eaten in salads and soups. DID YOU KNOW? Before the diffusion of plastic, in Indonesian villages any item from kitchenware to working tools were made from bamboo. Gililife 86

RECIPE

INGREDIENTS 200 gr bamboo shoots (fresh or canned)

500 gr diced chicken breast 200 gr long beans 1 cup of coconut milk 1 cup of water 1 stalk of lemongrass 1 kaffir lime leaf 5 star fruit sour fruit (optional)

SPICES 5 fresh red chillies 1 cm piece ginger 2 teaspoons salt 1 cm pieces of turmeric 1 cm piece of galangal

BAMBOO SHOOTS CURRY

Bamboo shoots are the edible shoots of the bamboo plant. They are a great source of potassium and fiber and very low in fat and calories. Bamboo shoots need to be peeled before being eaten as the exterior part is hard to digest. They can be prepared by boiling them first or by slicing them very thinly and soaking them in water for a few days. Otherwise, they can also be found in cans, though surely less tasty!

PREPARATION • Grind the spices until they become a well-mixed puree; • Stir-fry the ground spices with the bamboo shoots; • Add the coconut milk, the water, lemon grass stalks, long beans, kaffir lime leaves and the star fruit • Add the chicken • Cook over medium heat for about 10-15 minutes and it is ready to be served!
