GILILIFE FOCUS THIS MONTH ALL 3 GILI ISLANDS CELEBRATED

MANDI SAFAR 2017 CEREMONY

Mandi Safar is a Muslim bathing festival. This holiday, which is observed during the month of Safar, was originally believed to commemorate the last time Muhammad was able to bathe before his death. Muslims wearing bright colors visited beaches for a religious cleansing of the body and soul with water. There is no mention of the rite in the Qur'an (the Muslim holy book), and orthodox Muslims consider it nothing more than a picnic. It continues as a merry Holiday.

THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 26

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 28

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 29 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle, where time seems Gililife 30

to bend and life seems to slow down. Out of the three Gili’s, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by big crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet

GILI MENO

interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

ACTIVITIES

An exceptional MARINE WORLD FULL OF

beauty & biodiversity

SCUBADIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Gililife 34

Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a soughtafter destination for muck diving.

There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SPECIES

This months' featured species

Zanclus cornutus

Moorish idol

When diving or snorkelling in Gili’s pristine waters, it is common to spot a reef fish with a triangular shape, white and yellow vertical stripes across its black body and a nice elongated dorsal fin. It is the Moorish Idol, a very typical tropical marine species related to the butterflyfish. Its name derives from the Moors, who believed this fish would bring happiness to the one who sees it. The Moorish Idol (not to be

Gililife 36

confused with the Diphreutes heniochus, which is in fact known as the false Moorish Idol) can grow up to 23 cm of length and is found across the Pacific ocean in reefs and lagoons up to 180 metres of depth. It feeds on almost any small living organism found on the reef such as coral polyps, sponges and other critters. As most reef fish, they reproduce by spawning, releasing eggs and sperms simultaneously in the ocean.

ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 38

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of revallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 40

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 42

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 44

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. Powerful and imposing, active or dormant, dreaded or venerated, volcanoes dominate the Indonesian landscape and are intrinsic to their cultural heritage. Tales, myths and legends colourfully explain tragic eruptions and mysterious events, and millions of people live at their slopes, cultivating fertile soils and harvesting sulfur and other mineral resources abounding in volcanic areas. Indeed, you cannot say you have appreciated Indonesia's natural wonders if you have not climbed at least one of its many volcanoes or dipped in one of its many volcanic lakes. Sweating up Indonesia's majestic peaks surrounded by dramatic views and beautiful crowns of water vapour is an incredible experience that many visitors do not miss. For those not feeling fit enough for a hike, hundreds of hot springs and volcanic lakes scattered across the archipelago are ideal places to swim and relax. Did you know? Indonesia’s most active volcanoes are Kelud and Mount Merapi, both located in Java and recordholders for the number and intensity of their eruptions. Hot springs are known in Indonesia as “Air Panas (hot water). The most famous ones are Air Panas in Banjar, North Bali and Danau Linting (a hot spring Lake about 8000 m2), Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. Indonesia is one of the world's largest reserves of geothermal energy. However, due to the lack of resources and the complexity of its geography, most of this source of renewable energy remains untapped. Anak Krakatoa is an island that has emerged following the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883. 53 Gililife

VOLCANOES Gililife 54

RING OF FIRE It is not uncommon for Indonesia to make the headlines for its volcanoes. Many of Indonesia’s volcanoes are dormant, but almost 130 are considered active. This is not surprising considered that Indonesia is located on the Ring of Fire, an area at the

edges of the Pacific Ocean where we find 75% of the world’s active volcanoes. The Eurasian and the Indo-Australian plate are some of the most active tectonic plates on the Ring of Fire; they stretch just beneath Indonesia and their collisions throughout centuries have caused the emergence of the country’s hundreds of volcanoes. One of the most (in) famous volcanic eruptions in Indonesia’s history struck North Sumatra over 74,000 years ago and resulted in the creation of Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the country. Nevertheless, many volcanoes in Indonesia are safe to climb and definitely worth a visit; from Mt Kelimutu’s multicoloured lakes, the Tengger Massif’s dramatic landscape, Puncak Jaya’s glaciers to Mt Rinjani’s sacred lake, explore Indonesia’s natural wonders: visit a volcano.

Gililife's Top tips for

SAFE CLIMBING Be in Good Shape

Hiking on top of a volcano is harder than walking at sea level! Be sure to be in very good shape if you intend to get past 3,000m of height. Don’t be afraid to renounce to the hike or postpone it if you are not feeling well.

Take Plenty of Water

Bring with you between 2-3 litres of water per day for a tough hike. If you are on a long hike, hire a porter to carry your water or bring some good quality water filters so that you can drink directly from the streams.

Altitude Sickness

This is a very common ailment of people who are not used to climbing. It is due to a lack of oxygen caused by high altitude. If you start feeling strong headaches and nausea as you ascend, consider this possibility, descend a bit and make a safety stop. Diarrhea and digestive problems are also common, bring some tablets in case.

Stay Warm

Although most travel agencies will provide you with equipment such as tents and sleeping bags, consider to bring your own or else check it well before you start your hike. Make sure you have very comfortable shoes, a rainproof jacket and avoid wearing cotton, as it holds onto water, and if the weather turns cold and windy, you could start to freeze.

Choose Smartly

Before you attempt any volcano hike, take some information regarding the weather conditions and the risk of eruption. Choose a tour operator with experience and do not be afraid to spend a bit more money for a better and safer service. Gililife 58

BAMBU COTTAGES LIVE THE BAMBOO EXPERIENCE GILI AIR Bambu cottages is a family story, the story of Michele, Thierry and Junior, who were charmed by Gili’s tropical life & vibe and decided to stay. Combining their construction skills, love for natural building materials and passion for simple yet quality pleasures of life, the trio created Bambu Cottages, a family venture in the name of laid-back tropical life. It is not surprising that this family with experience in construction decided to give bamboo a privileged place as a building material. Bamboo has indeed amazing functional qualities; not only it is an extremely flexible material easy to work with, but it is also a fast-growing plant easy to grow, which means using it doesn’t contribute to deforestation. Although in Indonesia bamboo used to be a material traditionally used for bridges and boats, in the

last 40 years it has gained popularity for constructions of any kind among which many houses, hotels and furnishings, recognizable for their beauty and incredible shapes. “People who live in buildings made of natural materials are happier, because these allow more oxygen flow in the building, which is good for the brain!” Amir Rabik, one of Indonesia’s most famous sustainable architects said. This is something that has been well understood at Bambu Cottages, where guests live and breathe bamboo in every area. The right balance between sustainability and comfort is to be found in the ability to create nice living spaces with good air and sunlight flow and to combine inside and outside spaces harmonically. To this, Michele, Thierry and Junior added a happy tropical family vibe & touch, the perfect mix for the ideal tropical holiday! 63 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Located on the sunrise side of Gili Air, Bambu Cottages is a lovely property made in bamboo located in front of one of the island’s best snorkelling spots and with a view on Mount Rinjani. Michele, Thierry and Junior took good care in creating this “bamboo bubble”, ensuring guests would find anything they need to live the real tropical experience that makes you feel far from home. “We wanted to create something unique and different than what exists on the island.” Junior said. “We asked ourselves what people are looking for when they come to a tropical island in Indonesia and we decided to offer something typical,

Gililife 64

not luxurious, but the place you will remember when you go home after your holiday. We are not looking for the comfort you can get in Europe, but want our guests to feel on a tropical island.” He proudly added. He and his parents personally followed the construction of the whole place, which was designed by them without architects and contractors. Bambu Cottages is composed of 13 bungalows of different categories and a sea view swimming pool. The Bambu Bar & Restaurant and Spa complete the experience, serving delicious dishes made with organic and fresh vegetable coming every day from Lombok.

Enjoy the Bambu experience all day long! From a breath-taking privileged sunrise view to a healthy delicious breakfast on the beach, an afternoon spent between a massage, some chilling on the beach or at the pool and ending with a dinner feet in the sand, Bambu offers an easy-going yet cared for tropical experience. Blue Marine Dive Shop right next door ensure guests can easily join a dive or a yoga class and bicycles for rent provide the best way to explore inland. Bambu Cottages opened in December 2014 and this month it is celebrating its 3rd anniversary! Bambu is expanding the bamboo experience with the addition of two villas with private pool located in the middle of the island and a new partner: Karma villas in the north of Gili Air, 4 one bedroom villas with private pool made in bamboo and natural materials!

KARTINI THE LABEL GILI INSPIRED SWIMWEAR GILI AIR KARTINI is an Australian run boutique swimwear label based in Gili Air. The label officially launched in 2017, and can be found in the KARTINI flagship store in the harbour of Gili Air and online via www.kartini.shop. KARTINI's aesthetic & distinct style is a fusion of contemporary swimwear cuts designed for tropical island living, and bold prints that echo textile traditions from across the Indonesian archipelago. Each KARTINI piece features a unique, original print inspired by Indonesian batik and woven ikat textiles, or bold plain colours that can be paired with the prints. KARTINI is the creation of AustralianIndonesian Jill Kartini, who was given the name by her mother. “My Mum chose the name for me because it represents female strength. I have always loved the name, and Kartini’s story. I wanted

a name that represented female power, which I believe, embodies the KARTINI label” explained Jill. Raden Adjeng Kartini was the daughter of a Javanese nobleman. She lived between 1879 and 1904, during the Dutch Colonial Era. During her short life, Kartini wrote letters to several of her father’s Dutch associates - socialists, feminists and educationalists; expressing her thoughts about the power structure of the Javanese aristocracy and the Dutch colonial system – pressing the case for girl’s education, the training of more Javanese teachers, midwives and doctors and the end of colonial domination. After her death, the letters were gathered and published widely – and her ideas have become an important feminist, intellectual and nationalist legacy. 71 Gililife

GILI ZOOM “KARTINI was born out of my love for Indonesian textiles and tropical island living. I grew up in a household full of textiles from around the world, particularly batik & ikat that my Mum collected during her travels to Indonesia. I followed in my Mum's footsteps and began collecting textiles on my travels. I love the detailed intricacy of hand drawn and stamped batik, and the feathery colours and patterns of woven ikat pieces that take weeks to make. I love that each region of Indonesia has its own textiles that tell a story about the culture” Jill explained. Fittingly, each KARTINI swimwear style is named after a place in Indonesia. KARTINI’s first collection “SATU” features three one-piece swimsuits (the Flores, Sumba and Sulawesi) and a range of bikini separates. The bikini

Gililife 72

range is designed to allow women the freedom to mix and match between the cuts, prints and plain colours to suit their individual style and body shape – it’s a celebration of the diversity of women and the rich textile traditions of Indonesia. KARTINI swimwear is also designed with the environment in mind! All prints are created using an eco friendly ‘sublimation’ dyeing process that is completely water free. The process uses heat-activated dyes that directly convert into gaseous form and permeate into the fibers of the fabric, bonding with it permanently. The result? One of kind prints that do not fade, minimal waste and no harm done to waterways! All KARTINI swimwear also comes packaged in a reusable 100% cotton KARTINI drawstring bag.

SWIM & SKIN KARTINI will soon launch a new collection of luxurious natural skincare products. “Skin is what you show the most of when you wear a bikini, so it makes sense to look after it” said Jill. The new range is inspired by traditional Indonesian herbal medicine, and essential oils, spices and tropical fruits unique to the archipelago, like clove, sandalwood and mangosteen. “I wanted to create products using the vast array of gorgeous natural ingredients native to Indonesia, but they had to be sls and paraben free, and most importantly, cruelty free. My favourite products are the Healing Face Mask (Papaya, Seaweed + Ylang-Ylang) and the Hydrating Mist (Aloe Vera, Jicama & Sandalwood). The new skincare range will be available in the KARTINI store in late December. You can follow the KARTINI story on Instagram @kartinithelabel

GILI AIR, GILI ISLANDs & GILI MENO DIVERS THREE CENTRES, ONE FAMILY GILI AIR & GILI MENO It was not long after the opening of Gili Air Divers in February 2011 than Gili Meno Divers was created in June of the same year, joined by Gili Islands Divers in 2014. The idea behind having three different base camps in the Gili’s was to offer a personalised and flexible dive experience that would comply with high quality and supervision standards. While small dive shops attentively consider each guest’s diving preferences and personality, a tight collaboration with the other dive centres under the same umbrella increases equipment and facilities exchange, mutual support and ensures high quality standards are further verified and applied at all times. Three different centres with a common philosophy, vision, operational support and management direction: a cozy learning environment and a big family to rely on!

“Flexibility is important to us.” Bibi, one of the owners said. “In our trainings, we strive to create a educational environment adapted to each student and we encourage people who dive with us to express their preferences and needs, so that we can adapt the choice of the site or the rhythm of the dive accordingly.” he added. Beside ordinary scuba diving courses, GAD, GID and GMD also offer freedive trainings, as in fact they were first dive centres in Gili Air and Gili Meno to teach freedive. Moreover, they are SSI Instructor Training Dive Centres, specialised in crossover PADI to SSI and are islands-wide known for their passion and experience in muck diving and underwater macro photography. 75 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Gili Air Divers Located on Gili AIr’s main strip, on the East side of the island and next to Sunrise Resort, GAD is the ideal choice for those who prefer the busy part of the island and are looking for a hectic environment where there is always something going on. Facing a white sandy beach and some of the island’s best snorkeling spots, this location offers you the opportunity to take some beach time in between dives and lose the fear of missing out! Gili Islands Divers The newest of the three, GID is a large and quiet dive centre located within Grand Sunset Resort on the sunset side of the island. The breezy seaview terrace makes the perfect learning environment and the resort facilities are at hand, which means you don’t need to go far for a good lunch or a beautiful sunset after your dive. Gili Meno Divers GMD is located 5 minutes walk from Gili Meno’s harbour on the southeast coast of the island. Managed by Hannah and Adrien since its beginnings, GMD is a small boutique dive centre, where attention is given to details and guests are particularly taken care of. Located on one of Gili Meno’s best beaches and within Kontiki resort, this dive centre caters for those who are looking for a quiet and personalised dive experience away from the crowds.

Gililife 76

Education and Career “Particular attention is given to team members who show the wish to be trained professionally.” Mamik, one of the owners said. Mamik belongs to the first generation of Indonesian diving guides to be trained as instructors in the 1990’s. Since then, he has made a long and fruitful career, which has seen him managing dive centres in the Gili’s for over 15 years and training thousands of foreign and Indonesian divers. It is probably one of the reasons why the company naturally invests in local employees. “We do not only train our employees to serve the company, but we invest in creating solid careers complying with international standards.” he explained. Priority is given to professional training to local employees, for which furthering their education can make a big difference in their career and their future. Rather than investing in seasonal foreign employees, who most of the time do not stay more than one year, Mamik, Bibi and the rest of the management prefer to engage in a longterm investment and give opportunities to those who stay and want to grow. “Seeing that some of the guys who used to work as office boys or helpers in the equipment room are now instructors or operational managers gives me immense satisfaction. It is great to see how our local team is becoming more and more experienced and professional.” he proudly added.

NORTH LOMBOK

SOUTH LOMBOK

WELCOME TO

BAYAN – MASJID KUNO Built in the 16th century, the Bayan Mosque is the oldest mosque in Lombok. It has woven bamboo walls and is built on stone foundation. It is located around 80 km from Mataram and is part of a very interesting and meaningful religious site.

GERUPUK Gerupuk is a small fishermen's village known for its peaceful life and surfing spots. If you love to surf or are looking for a white empty beach just for you, Gerupuk Bay is the perfect destination!

NATURE & ADVENTURE

TREKKING - RINJANI Mount Rinjani soars to 3726m above sea level (2nd highest volcano in Indonesia). The ascent does not require highly technical skills but rather determination! Start from Senaru, North Lombok, a site also known for its magnificent waterfalls.

LOMBOK

WATERFALLS - SENARU From the village of Senaru it takes 20 minutes walk to access the waterfalls. You can cross the valley and go down the 315 steps following the irrigation canals. Powerful waterfall, locals say that it must go behind to rejuvenate a year!

KUTA Kuta is a small town famous for its surfing “beach break” and “reef break”. You can rent boards in several places and take lessons. Its beach is a beautiful and wide sandy cove surrounded by small hills. SELONG BLANAK Selong Blanak is a beautiful bay strewn with small shops. The main attraction is surfing, however swimming remains possible. The waves are perfect for beginners. You will easily find somewhere to rent a board for a few hours.

SOUTH LOMBOK

WEST LOMBOK

MORE LOMBOK

MAWUN Don’t miss Mawun beach under any circumstances! Located 20 minutes west of Kuta Lombok by scooter, the road there is beautiful and safe. You’ll travel alongside rice paddies and small traditional villages with typical "Sasak" houses.

SENGGIGI Senggigi is a bustling town on the West cost of Lombok littered with luxury hotels, restaurants, shops of all kinds, and a craft market. About ten kilometers on either side of the city there are beautiful beaches lined with coconut palms.

GILI GEDE Gili Gede is a tropical jewel. The lack of traffic and untouched nature are two of the main features of this island! The clear waters and abundant marine life guarantee fantastic snorkeling experience steps from your bungalow.

TANJUNG AAN The Tanjung Aan bay is huge with pristine, fine, white sand on one side, and on the other, a golden sandy beach with large grains. A central rock separates the two different beaches and you can climb it to admire the magnificent view! EKAS Renowned for its world-class surfbreaks and strong wind that blows all year round, this peninsula is the paradise for surfers and kite-surfers. Ekas also offers white beaches with pristine water on sandy bottoms!

MATARAM Mataram, the capital of Lombok has several sectors: Ampenan, the pear, Mataram, the administrative center, Cakra, the business center and Bertais-Sweta where the bus station is located. From the Gilis, take the monkey forest road and visit the Mall for a shopping session! BANYUMULEK The Sasak artisans of Lombok produce pottery for centuries and pass on their traditions from one generation to another. Visit one of the most important centers in Banyumulek where you will observe the manufacturing process and find a wide range of objects.

DESERT POINT Said to be "the best left in the world", Desert Point is an oasis for experienced surfers. Break is located near the village of Bangko-Bangko and produces powerful rollers that can be surfed up to 300m. The best season is from May to September. TETEBATU This small quaint town lies just south of Mount Rinjani National Park. Here you can experience real, traditional village life in Lombok, along with an array of cultural experiences and beautiful waterfalls.

AVOCADO Originally from Mexico, nowadays avocado plants can be found across the world, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. Belonging to the Lauracaea family, avocado trees can reach 20mt of height and best grow in sunny and humid soils, away from wind and cold weather. It is a very resistant plant and can live up to 100 years. There are almost 500 varieties of avocado, with significant differences in appearance and taste. They typically ripen after falling from the tree and can be propagated from the seeds...try to plant your own with a seed you scoop out of the fruit! Avocado come in all shades of green and brown and can have an oval, round or pear-shaped. They can weigh up to 1,4 kg each and their flesh is edible and rich in nutrients, much more than most fruits. It is consumed raw, in salads, dips or thick juices and can also make a yummy creamy sauce for pasta dishes.

RECIPE

INGREDIENTS 2 (very) ripe avocados ½ tspn salt 1 tbsp fresh lime juice 2 tbsp minced shallot 1-2 chilies, stems and seeds removed, minced 2 tbsp finely chopped cilantro Freshly grated black pepper

GUACAMOLE

½ ripe chopped tomato, seeds and pulp removed

The name Guacamole comes from two Aztec words—ahuacatl (avocado) and molli (sauce). This dish is in fact originally from Mexico, but it is also very popular in the Gili’s, where it is easy to source locally Guacamole fresh ingredients. Local avocadoes are smaller than their American cousins, but nonetheless incredibly tasty!

PREPARATION Much of this is done to taste! Start with this recipe and adjust to your taste! • Half the avocado, remove the seed and scoop out the flesh • In a bowl, mash the flesh with a fork. Leave it a bit chunky • Add salt, lime juice, the chopped onion, cilantro, black pepper, and chiles • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve • Add the tomatoes just before serving • Serve with tortilla chips Gililife 88
