THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 26

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

GILI TRAWANGAN

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened

Gililife 28

at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the

widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation- ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle, where time seems Gililife 30

to bend and life seems to slow down. Out of the three Gili’s, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by big crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet

GILI MENO

interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 32

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

LOMBOK

LOMBOK

AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL BEAUTY AND TRADITIONAL LIVING

LOMBOK With its largely unspoiled natural environment, vivid, diverse traditional culture and increasing infrastructure, Lombok island is an interesting compromise between touristic Bali and wild Sumbawa. Jagged coasts and sheltered bays, white-sanded empty beaches and lush green hills lined by rice paddies overlooked by majestic Mount Rinjani characterise Lombok’s natural landscape, while in traditional villages a diversity of practices coexist. The island is dotted with mosques, symbols of Islam, the

Gililife 36

most practiced religion, but there are some important Hindu temples scattered in the West, heritage of the Hindu tradition. Sasak people, Lombok’s indigenous people, practice a syncretic form of Islam (wetu telu), which blends Hindu-Buddhist influences, Sunni Islam, animism and ancestral worship. Authentic Sasak villages offer a valuable insight into the island’s traditional culture, famous for the turun temurun, Capital city Mataram is a busy town with colourful markets and the gate to Senggigi’s stunning bays in the North and Mt Rinjani’s green slopes to the East. In the South, world-class surf breaks, a multitude of pristine beaches and

gentle hills are an open invitation to explore the surroundings at one’s pace and enjoy the tropical vibe. The East offers a complete different scenery; from waterfalls, rainforests and hills carpeted with rice paddies, the surroundings of Mount Rinjani provide a myriad of hike options, from easy walks to very challenging treks in a beautiful panoramic landscape. In the South-West, facing Lembar harbour and Sekotong, are the less known Gili’s (meaning “small island”), where snorkeling in the lively reef and chilling on the empty beaches are the few tourists’ main activity. With its cultural and environmental diversity, Lombok is the ideal destination to discover something new everyday.

Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SPECIES

This months featured species

Porcupine fish

Porcupinefish include a variety of species of highly toxic fish that inflate their body when in danger. When feeling attacked, they use their elastic stomach to fill their body with air or water and become a spiky ball several times their usual size. Porcupine fish usually live in shallow waters in tropical and subtropical oceans, but some adults have been reported at a depth of 200 metres. Their preferred habitat is coral and rocky reefs and are widely distributed worldwide. They can be found across Europe, North and South America as well as Oceania. Porcupine fish have a beak-like mouth and their body is covered by sharp poisonous spikes. Their body is usually covered by dark spots on a pale background to blend in

Gililife 40

with the environment. Their body length ranges from 2 cm to 90 cm and it can weight up to 3 kg according to the species. They are famous for their toxicity, as most species produce tetrodotoxin, a poison lethal to other fish and to humans too. In fact, the poison contained in a single porcupine fish can kill up to 30 human beings and there is no known antidote. Did you know... In Japan and Korea the meat of porcupine fish is considered a delicacy and can only prepared by specialized chefs. However, many deaths are reported annually because of its consumption.

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 42

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of revallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim! 45 Gililife

ACTIVITIES

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

Gililife 46

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 48

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! THE NATION’S LOVE FOR MUSIC Resonating across the country, from Gamelan to Punk Hardcore!

Indonesians have always loved music and even today music remains a characteristic feature of any social and religious gathering across all social classes, ages and backgrounds. Indeed, music has always played an important role in Indonesia’s thousands of different cultures. From tribal music to performing arts rooted in classic traditions up to rhymed hip-hop, sexy dangdut and socially engaged punk rock, Indonesia’s soundscape is as diverse as its linguistic or ethnic varieties. There are dozens of music styles, which often accompany religious ceremonies and traditional events such as weddings and functions, and more modern genres are also performed at big festivals, on the streets or invade social media channels. Music is played at animist ceremonies and trance dances and

there are several indigenous musical instruments native to the archipelago. Unlike other countries with a strong Islamic influence, music is widely played across the Muslim community, from Muslim orchestras in Islamic functions to Muslim Punk on You Tube. Historians report that Islamic sultanates in the 1500s were already very supportive of the development of music, namely of some varieties of Gamelan, Indonesia’s most popular and important kind of music. Being able to sing and play music is appreciated and regarded with respect; some important political figures such as former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono released a music album and current President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, is a former metal-head who has been often seen wearing a Metallica t-shirt!

MUSIC STYLES Across Indonesia

FOLK MUSIC & INSTRUMENTS Besides Gamelan and Angklung, Indonesia’s folk music is very diverse and reflects the country diverse cultural heritage. Folk music includes shamanic dances and music dances such as North Sumatra Tapanuli Ogong, Tembang Sunda singing traditions and Kecapi Suling instrumental music, traditional lullabies and Orkes Melayu, a mix of traditional Arabic and Indian melodies, some folk song are meant to soothe and relax, others to make your heart beat and dance; today, Indonesia’s folk music includes genres such as pop, rock and hip hop. The gong is one of the most common and famous traditional instrument, and other well-known ones are: Sasando, a bamboo stringed instrument (from Timor) Kolintang, a kind of xylophone (from North Sulawesi) Gambus, a stringed instrument played like a guitar (from Riau) Gedang, a drum used in dangdut music. Different versions can be found across Indonesia Tifa, small drum (from Papua) Bonang, part of Gamelan orchestras (from Java) Divine Sounds: Some musical instruments are believed to have magical powers. The gong is regarded in many Indonesian traditions as a direct way to communicate with the gods. Gililife 58

GAMELAN

ANGKLUNG Listed by UNESCO as a representative of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Angklung is a musical instrument made in bamboo and rattan and traditionally played in important events such as weddings and harvesting ceremonies. It is typically made of bamboo tubes tied together with rattan cords and contained in a bamboo frame, which is shaken or tapped to make its distinct sound. It is a very ancient instrument that allegedly originated in West Java and is also a feature of Indonesia’s Hindu tradition. Because of the way it is played, namely by several players at the same time, the Angklung is considered an instrument that promotes teamwork and cooperation. In addition, playing the Angklung requires strong concentration and memory and can be tuned both in the Indonesian scales and in the Western diatonic scale. For this reason, it is used in world music education as it allows to easily teach music from different traditions such as Indonesian folk songs and Western music. It is today taught at music educational institutes in different countries such as Japan and Singapore and also in some of the Gili’s local schools.

The term “Gamelan” refers both to the ensemble of instruments that compose this complex orchestra as well as to the kind of music produced. Gamelan music is one of the most ancient and popular in the country, and can be considered Indonesia’s national set of instruments. The Gamelan orchestra is in fact made of several instruments, which vary according to the historical period and the island in which they are played. From 40 to 80 different instruments can be played in the same Gamelan, each playing a different role in the composition of sounds that accompany most ceremonies and performances across the country. The word Gamelan comes from the word “Gamel”, which means “to hammer” or “to handle” and Gamelan instruments include percussions such as drums and gongs, which are usually played at the back of the orchestra, as well as bamboo flutes and wooden xylophones, which are usually played at the front to create the melody. Scenes of Gamelan orchestras are depicted in Pramabanan and Borobudur and there is evidence that in Java Gamelan were already played in the 2nd century B. C. The most ancient and traditional Gamelans come from Java, Bali and Lombok, but can be found in a variety of traditions across the country. Did you know? Gamelan music is not written; musicians learn by doing and melodies are passed over from one generation of musicians to the next.

Did you know? The versatility of this instrument allows to play any song. Angklung orchestra repertoire can include songs from a variety of traditions and some Angklung rendings of “Bohemian Rapsody” by British band The Queen are particularly famous! 59 Gililife

PUNK

Punk is probably Indonesia’s most diffused subculture and Indonesia’s punk scene is probably one of the world’s biggest and most lively. Inspired by European punk rock, Indonesia’s punk has developed a unique tradition with its own symbols, slogans and dress codes. Spread among people from different geographic areas, social classes and religious beliefs, Indonesia’s punk music is a very diverse genre that includes many different trends and that

Gililife 60

faces support as much as it faces opposition. It emerged in the 1990’s following the end of Suharto regime, at a time when young people demanded change and took the streets to manifest against oppression and corruption. The slogan of this counterculture was “You have power and autonomy”. Some underground punk bands such as the Marjinal started being very active socially, offering music classes to disadvantaged youth, while more politically involved bands sent an anti-capitalism, antiauthority message. After years of political and social repression, the punk movement was considered as a tool of expression for change and a “New Order”. In the past 15 years, this trend has changed and Indonesia’s punk has taken a conservative turn, namely in regards of Islam. Although in Banda Aceh some representative of the punk movement were recently detained in a reeducation camp and forced to shave their heads and pray, Islamic punk is on the rise, and many punk bands supporting and spreading Islam values have emerged. The social role has remained, and bands such as the Punk Muslim from Jakarta, organise religious workshops, proselyte in the streets and fill their songs with references to the Quran. Playing music is just one of the activities they carry out to spread their beliefs. According to an Australian study about punk music, Indonesia’s current Muslim punk movement is more conservative than its counterpart in other countries.

DANGDUT

This happy, groovy dancing music is a mix of Malay, Arabic and Hindustani music and probably Indonesia’ most popular genre. Regarded at times as a traditional folk music style, at times as a vulgar and controversial genre, Dangdut is the music you’ll hear sounding loud if you walk by a local house in the Gili’s, if you turn on local TV channels or by local bands playing on slow ferries at sea. Dangdut is typically played by a band of musicians led by a singer; it is characterised by a fast beat and if can bear influences from music genres very different from each other, such as Middle East pop music, Bollywood and even house music and reggae. Often the lead singer is a girl who wears a tiny short sexy dress and engages in very sensual moves. This is one of the reasons why Dangdut music often receives the disapproval and the attacks of religious conservative groups. One of the most famous Dangdut singer, also known as the Dangdut Queen, was Julia Perez, a talented sexy singer who made the charts in the 2000s and who, because of her bold, sexy performances, faced strong Islamic opposition. She died of cancer in 2017, mourn by millions of distraught fans across the country.

HIP HOP

Although some elements of rap music were already present in some 1970’s folk music, it is only recently that Indonesian hip hop is recognized as such. Some of the early artists such as Iwa K in the 1990s were regarded with disapproval by conservative groups, because of the association of this music style to Western hip hop iconic symbols of sex and drugs. Today, hip hop is experiencing a renaissance and, although it remains a youth subculture, there are a lot of Indonesian rappers who count millions of followers on YouTube and social channels. Singing sometimes in English, sometimes in Bahasa Indonesia, in their songs current hip hop celebrities talk about social issues and inequalities, but also feature references to Western liberal values as well as issues young people face in their daily life. Some artists such as Ebith Beat A combine hip hop with Sundanese music and references to Islamic scriptures; some others such as 8 Ball fill their songs with elements of Indonesia’s profane traditions and some others like Brian Imanuel, have collaborated with important international hip hop artists such as Ghostface from the Wu-Tang Clan.

REGGAE In Indonesia, reggae music started as a style to entertain tourists on popular beach bars in Bali and Lombok, without much reference to the values supported by Jamaican reggae movement. It soon spread to the cities, including influences from Indonesian folk music and the use of traditional instruments such as Gamelan. Today, Indonesia reggae songs talk about happiness and freedom, but also about social inequalities; reggae concerts are very inclusive environments open to everyone. Some of the most famous reggae artists are Steven and CoconuTTreez, who made reggae famous among the Indonesian audience, Jodi Agung, a famous reggae artist from Bali, Toni Q, known for his references to local rural culture and struggles, Ras Muhamed, the so-called Indonesian Rastafari Ambassador, is a voice of social political expression and was featured by Rolling Stones Indonesia as Indonesia’s best reggae singer. “Welcome to my Paradise”, a very popular reggae hit, was written by Tpenk, and refers to life in Gili Trawangan. Indonesian reggae is increasingly gaining international attention and some local reggae bands have performed abroad and featured in international reggae compilations. The support on social media is huge as well as the opposition of some conservative groups. 61 Gililife

Music for me is everything. My life is music. Music relieves me from stress and allows me to see the light; it is also my light, and it means everything to me. I love music, it is my way.

What is life for you?

When I play or I listen to music I feel alive. Music gives me all that I need: culture, skills, income, relaxation...I can make people happy and educate through music. I don’t need more.

How do you see the music scene in the Gili’s? Music here is a lot about business and entertaining tourists, less about music education. This means we don’t cooperate much with one another and there is a lot of competition among musicians. My dream is to establish an organisation that would support musicians exchange and help set some standards such as a minimum compensation, musicians’ ranking, length of performances...this would allow to protect musicians and to increase the quality of the music offer.

How do you feel when you perform in the Gili islands?

The place is nice and relaxing, we play by the beach. We are closer to our audience than if we were playing on a stage. The atmosphere is laid-back, I really like it here.

WILSONS RETREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT AT ITS BEST GILI TRAWANGAN The growth of worldwide tourism has brought about rapid development of infrastructure, resulting in a dramatic increase in tourism structures, opening new markets and strengthening the presence of some of the world’s most famous tourist destinations. This international trend is particularly visible in the Gili islands where, especially in the past 5 years, the tourism market has been growing at a very rapid pace. The opening of Lombok International Airport in 2012, the expansion of regional low-cost air companies as well as the establishment of reliable fast boats services contribute to this phenomenon, and the Gili islands have become one of the most sought-after destinations in Indonesia. As a result, a myriad of new businesses have sprouted, and today we can find over 600 different hotels on Gili Trawangan alone.

With such a wide choice, it is more and more difficult to discern what properties suit our tastes and needs. A study by the Business department of the Australian government highlighted the importance of customer’s service, stating that treating guests respectfully and exceeding their needs and expectations generates positive returns, resulting in higher occupancy and business profitability. Sustainability and environmental awareness is another important aspect to the eyes of the modern discerning tourists. This is particularly true in the Gili’s, where limited resources and environmental vulnerability demand businesses to adopt a bold environmental policy. With their world-class customer’s service and strong sustainable practices, Wilson’s Retreat in Gili Trawangan is a valuable choice for guests as well as for the island’s well-being.

GILI ZOOM Located on the sunset side of Gili Trawangan, Wilson’s Retreat opened 7 years ago and is today one of the most established resorts on the island. The resort caters for families and couples, but also for the solo traveller who is looking to unwind in a relaxed and well-maintained environment. The location, right in front of Gili Trawangan’s best snorkeling spots, as well as the abundance of trees and tropical plants create a welcoming atmosphere, providing the perfect base to enjoy your stay on the island. Guests can relax by the pool or in the spacious berugah and sun beds, or else sit around the tables under the trees right on the beach and appreciate the natural shade right in front of the ocean while tasting some of the

Gililife 70

restaurant’s delicacies. Guests are spoilt by the wide choice of accommodation options and excellent customer service. Twenty rooms, 16 suites as well as private pool villas are distributed in the property’s big land. Choose the Julu suite for a spacious veranda wooden deck or the Muri for a nice big garden. The private villas feature one or two bedrooms and all have their own private pool. “Other properties may copy our design, but they cannot copy our unique quality customer’s service.” Kus, the General Manager said. Kus is also pro-actively working to bring the resort’s environmental commitment to the next level, collaborating with the Eco Trust to improve the environmental situation on the island.

Wilson’s Retreat contribution to the environment The property is rapidly reducing the use of plastic. No straws are served, take-away boxes are not made of plastic and free refills are offered to guests and tourists passing by. In addition, in order to reduce the environmental impact, only natural toiletries such as organic soap and natural mosquito repellant are used. Wilson’s Retreat is also a proud supporter of beach clean ups. “I know it’s a challenge but if we work together we can improve the situation.” said Kus, who introduced the idea of organising regular simultaneous beach clean-ups on the three islands for a larger impact. Gili Life recommends Wilson’s Retreat is also very famous for its restaurant. Here are some of our choices! Indonesian cuisine: try the signature rendang or the typical ayam taliwang! Super salad: taste the ahi poke, a delicate mix of raw tuna dices with shallotts seasoned with sesame soy sauce French patisserie: cannot choose between the crème brulee, mousse chocolat? Take both!

H2O YOGA YOGA AND MEDITATION CENTER GILI AIR Gili Air translates to “Water Island”, because of the presence of underground fresh water supplies, which distinguishes it from most tropical islands in the region. Water is a special substance that represents about 70% of the Earth’ surface and about 65% of our bodies and upon which life depends. Considered the fundamental role water plays in our and all living organisms’ life, it is no wonder that the water element has always been highly valued in cultures across the world and throughout history. Water is one of the four elements of the classical thought, one of the five great elements described by the Indian Vedas and by Chinese tradition and it is included in Buddha’s teachings as one of the real sensations to be observed.

Universally considered the symbol of purity and fertility and historically associated to many creation myths, water symbolism is as diverse as human cultures. H20 Yoga & Meditation centre in Gili Air is named after this fundamental substance. This is a reference to the distinct characteristic of the island where it is located as well as to the idea that there is so much more to yoga than the physical practice. H2O centre prides itself on making new people to yoga feel welcome and offering a progam that gives visitors a wide range of yogic and meditation practices to explore. It has become a magnet for likeminded people to connect. There is something for everyone at H20! 73 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Opened in May 2011, H2O Yoga and Meditation Centre is the largest centre in Lombok and the Gili’s. It is located in a peaceful tree lined location within Gili Air just a few minutes walk from the island’s east coast beaches. H2O is today a comprehensive well-being centre that has something for everyone. It boasts two large yoga studios, an Aqua Yoga pool, a well-being centre and a health conscious cafe. H2O also offers a variety of comfortable pool view accommodation options. Alchemy symbols and principles of the Vastu Shastra (Indian system of architecture) are reflected in the space to optimize energy flow. For instance, odd numbers of stairs bring up to the verandah, people’s head face south when sleeping, all water is contained

Gililife 74

in the north-east and all electricity in the fire corner. The upside down triangle, the alchemic symbol for water can be seen in many locations throughout the centre. This is a reminder of transformation. “I love to see people’s intention to embark on a journey of transformation.” Jon (Bindu), the owner, proudly said. “We provide a space to connect our guests to their spiritual aspect and to bring it into their lives.” he added. Over the years, H2O has also strengthened its ties to the local community as some of the profit of the activities such as the Friday night ‘Freestyle Dance Meditation” are donated to local organisations working for animal welfare.

The H2O experience Start your day with a yoga class and enjoy the meditative atmosphere of the spacious and airy studios. After class, have a bite at Good Earth cafe, a health conscious cafe that feeds your brain and soul. Open from 7.15am am to 4.45pm, the cafe serves a wide range of gluten-free and vegan options, offers water refills and has a very strict plastic-free policy. Have a smoothie bowl, a Sun Saluting breakfast or the famous banana bread by the pool and get ready to have some fun in a class. Need to focus? Try a meditation class! Feel active but it’s too hot to work out? Join the Aqua yoga class in the pool and fully connect to the water element! Want to try something new? Check the workshop schedule! (Yin, Beginners and Handstands) You may also decide to just chill by the pool, listen to the sounds of nature or explore the spa menu and spoil yourself with a deluxe treatment! For those of you that have more time come and join a 7 day “Life-changing” True Nature Retreat as they are held every 3 weeks and will leave you feeling totally rejuvenated!

NAD BRAHMA INDIAN VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN FOOD GILI AIR Ayurveda is one of the most ancient organised medical & life science system. It originated thousands of years ago in the Himalayas, following the gatherings and exchanges of some of the most expert herbal healers of that time and passed over from generation to generation. Ayurveda is also known as the science of life; its name is in fact the combination of the Sanskrit words “Ayur”, meaning life and “Veda”, meaning science, knowledge. This holistic healing system is based on the principle that health is our natural state of being and that this balance is maintained with appropriate nutrition, exercise as well as spiritual awareness. According to the combination of the 5 elements in our body (earth, fire, air, water, space), we all have a predominant “dosha” or body type

that is connected to our genetic heritage, age and environment and determine our physical, psychological and physiological state. The body constitutions recognised by Ayurveda are Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth and water); in order to be healthy and balanced, Ayurveda advices to limit the excesses of our “dosha” by adopting the most appropriate lifestyle to our individual condition. Nutrition is one of the pillars of this ancient healing system, which provides a series of guidelines, treatments and foods to remove toxins, open our energy channels and welcome life force (prana). A balanced diet that follows Ayurvedic principles will naturally increase our well-being and make us stronger, more positive and happy people.

GILI ZOOM Nad Brahma is the one and only Ayurvedic vegan and vegetarian restaurant on the Gili’s islands. Located in the heart of Gili Air, this cute small restaurant bears the same name and reflects the same concept of its sister restaurant in Amed, opened one year earlier. After spending 13 years in India, studying Indian Classical Music and home-made traditional cuisine, following and learning about Ayurvedic Nutrition for over 10 years Rosie, the owner, decided to open her own restaurants in Indonesia. Besides applying Ayurvedic nutrition guidelines in its dishes, Nad Brahma restaurants stick to a holistic approach to business, integrating the principles of earth & people care, mindful use of resources and fair share. Open from 10.30am to 10.30pm, Rosie and

Gililife 78

her team also offer Indian cooking classes and Ayurveda nutrition courses, including the determination of participants’ body constitution (dosha) and introducing them to the ancient comprehensive holistic healing system of Ayurveda. “Being myself a vegan, I know that it is hard to find healthy food places when travelling or to find places that cater for people with special food needs. “ Rosie said. From home-made chapati (Indian traditional bread) to yummy creamy dal (Indian lentil soup), everything is made fresh on site and in the kitchen there is no Msg or processed food. In addition, Nad Brahma follows a plastic-free policy; returnable boxes are used for take-aways, no straws and free water are some of the sustainable practices implemented by the business, which is mainly built in recycled materials.

Gililife Recommends From fresh juices adapted to each body type to hearty curries and mouthwatering thalis, Nad Brahma is the one-stop restaurant for your healthy food cravings. Get a colourful lentil salad or a home-made wrap for a light lunch, accompanying it with a ginger basil lemonade or an almond milk and date smoothie with cinnamon. At night, restore your energy by indulging in a special Indian plate menu (Thali) and try the myriad of small plates that go with it. You will lick your fingers after tasting the home-made raita (yoghurt dip) and spicy mint chutney. Nad Brahma is also strong on desserts; go for the coconut barfi if you’d like to keep immersing in traditional Indian cooking traditions or why not order a special raw vegan cheesecake for your best friend’s birthday?

GILI FRUIT

Frangipani Frangipani is the common name given to plants belonging to the genius Plumeria, which comprises around 7-8 species native to tropical Americas. Its scientific name is attributed to French botanist Charles Plumier, while it is believed its common name comes from the Italian Marquis Frangipani, who in the 16th century created a perfume from fragrant flowers of this plant. Frangipani trees can reach up to 6 metres and are easy to propagate; frangipani can grow from cuttings and a cut-off branch well watered and planted in the soil soon will be rooting and producing colurful flowers. Trees are very strong and can survive drought and heat, and only burn over 500 degrees; they do not require much care and resist pest attack. The flowers grow in clusters at the end of the branch and come in different colours, mainly white, yellow and pink, with the center of a deeper shade than the petals. The most common and popular species (and the ones you will find in the Gilis) are the Plumeria rubra and the Plumeria obtusa; they can be distinguished by the size of the tree (generally the Obtusa is smaller than the Rubra) and the shape of the petals, which are rounder in the Obtusa than in the Rubra.

DID YOU KNOW In Indonesian and Malay folklore, it is believed that the smell of a frangipani flower is a sign of the proximity of the Pontianak, a the woman vampire ghost.
