THE GILI ISLANDS

CULTURE & HISTORY

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature

Gililife 20

of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis

and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN

TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 22

corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of

crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-

GILI TRAWANGAN

ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 23 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE

MENO

Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island Gililife 24

where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. To get around either rent a bike, or take a stroll, it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the

GILI MENO

true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apano problem!!

GILI AIR

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 26

gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade

Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. ACTIVITIES

TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.

Gililife 30

Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

ACTIVITIES

A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE

FREEDIVING

Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

Gililife 32

MORE GILI ISLAND

WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world

without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are

worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES

YOGA

GET CONNECTED

Gililife 34

It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.

Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

ACTIVITIES

TREAT YOURSELF

SPA Gililife 36

There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.

MORE FUN ONLAND

OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

3W DIVE DIVE WHERE AND WHEN YOU WANT! GILI AIR

For those of you who have not been scuba diving before, I liken the experience to being in a state of meditation. Pure awareness in awe of a completely different world, all whilst being conscious of every breath and heartbeat. The activity demands 100% presence yet you feel weightless and totally relaxed - like you are flying through space with a crystal clear blue lens. Life under water is mesmerising, magical and absolutely surreal. A perfect place to practice observation without interaction. Billions of life forms all working together in perfect harmony with a plethora of natural beauty to take in. Minutes feel like seconds, hours like minutes – I can see why so many people get hooked. Scuba diving is something to be

enjoyed by all, and today thanks to the refinement in diving technology, the sport has been transformed to an increasingly popular recreational activity. Children from age of 8 can start their scuba diving adventure as a scuba ranger, and there are many levels of certifications and specialities for all the family to choose from. Why dive in the Gili Islands? Apart from the warm tropical turquoise waters, tourists flock to the Gili Islands for it’s abundance of turtles, reef sharks and other tropical sea life. There are wide variety of dives sites all just a short boat ride away, so whether you are an experienced diver or it’s your first time underwater, there will be a fabulous experience waiting to be had.

45 Gililife

GILI ZOOM I must admit that I was a little nervous about scuba diving. I did not know what to expect or how I would be underwater, but as soon as I walked into 3W Dive my mind was put at ease. The spacious dive center had a warm gentle buzz flowing through it and I was instantly greeted with a smile. Situated on the south-east side of Gili Air facing the majestic Mount Rinjani, 3W Dive is a product of José Romero’s love of scuba diving and the islands calm energy. José, the founding partner of 3W Dive, used to work on Gili Trawangan, but moved to Gili Air because he felt that the island's atmosphere corresponded more to his idea of a dive centre; small,

Gililife 46

familiar and personable. “I wanted to create an environment where everyone feels welcome - family, friends and solo travellers alike. The dive shop is like a home to me and I want everyone to feel like they are welcome in my home” José says with a smile. And indeed, diving with 3W Dive was like diving with your family and best buddies. What I found most impressive was that all the instructors were passionate, professional, patient and clear; the equipment was extremely well maintained and, most importantly for me, groups were kept to a maximum of 4 divers per instructor/ divemaster to ensure optimal safety and comfort.

At 3W Dive they are passionate about protecting the ocean and all it’s life. The eco-friendly dive shop minimises it’s use of plastic, supports responsible tourism and educates each diver of the impact each one of us has on our oceans. “When customers dive with us, we encourage them to not only experience the beauty of underwater life, but to understand the fragility of it’s beauty and the effect that consumerism has on our oceans. By experiencing the ocean first hand, I believe that people become more aware and connected to this issue we are facing today and hopefully together we can work towards restoring the ocean’s health” says José passionately. Thank you 3W Dive for opening up my eyes to a totally different and magical world. It was truly a life changing, eye opening experience and all I can say is that I will definitely be back for more! SUNRISE RESORT BATHING IN THE TROPICS GILI AIR

Going on holiday with your family is an exciting yet exhausting experience that can take out the best and the worst of ourselves. Nevertheless, it is a great opportunity to spend quality time together and strengthen family bonds. A recent survey conducted on over 1,000 Australian parents showed that the major highlight for families is to explore new places together, as well as creating family memories, which contribute to establishing lasting relations. The same survey revealed how stressful it can be for children to change schedule and habits, as the little ones are typically less keen to try new foods and explore new cultures. How to combine our desire for a family escape with the needs of the whole “tribe and avoid the risk of

a nightmare holiday? British child psychologist Dr. Margot Sunderland says that simple experiences such as sharing time in the pool, walking on the beach and observing different customs can improve children's physical and mental health, provided these activities are carried out in a safe and protected environment. Sharing time together in a new space is an investment and it's worth looking for the right accommodation option that will make the rest go smoother. The lack of motorized vehicles, general safety, the wide array of diverse activities and pristine waters teeming with marine life make the Gili Islands a great option for family holidays, and Sunrise Resort in Gili Air is a sure bet the whole family will be satisfied with.

49 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Perfectly located on Gili Air's best snorkeling spot and white sandy beach, Sunrise Resort in Gili Air is an institution on the island, where it has been accommodating travellers since 1992. The property has gradually developed into a fully integrated resort, featuring a comfortable and casual beach club and one of the best restaurants of the island. Relax and rejuvenate in the Resort's peaceful atmosphere, where every detail has been carefully designed to make you feel at home in the tropics. The connection with the water element

Gililife 50

is constantly present; whether you dip into the clear waters a few steps from your room, dive in the natural stone pool with waterfalls and jets of water for a great underwater massage, send your children to the dedicated kids' pool or immerse yourself in the bathtub of the rooms' open bathroom, you will enjoy the benefits of a real tropical holiday. Featuring 5 different room categories, including family and connecting rooms as well as private bungalows for honeymooners and solo travellers, Sunrise Resort is the perfect choice for discerning parents and active children as well as for divers and travellers seeking a place to relax without missing out on what the island has to offer. Look for the Pineapple, the Resort emblem and the symbol of the tropics!

GILI GARDENS LOVE FOR NATURE & HAPPY GARDENS GILI ISLANDS

With the end of the rainy season, the Gili Islands are the perfect place for a tropical holiday in contact with nature and yourself. The islands are greener than ever; horses are fat and cows are happily roaming around. April is the month when gardens bloom and the greatest variety of tropical flowers decorate houses and bungalows, creating a magic and welcoming atmosphere. The most common flowers in the Gili Islands are certainly the frangipani; their distinct perfume can be smelt everywhere and local girls and tourists alike can be seen wearing one behind their ears. Red hibiscus also grow naturally, as do bougainvilleas, these beautiful and resistant climber plants used to make shade on Gili's sunny dirt roads.

April is the month when fences are lush green, mango trees become stronger and their leaves darker, the multiple yellow-green flowers of the jackfruit bloom and the pandan fruits turn to orange. At this time of the year, the efforts made during the dry season to keep our gardens alive are rewarded; tiny stems become strong and tall plants and forgotten seeds show with pride their first green leaves under the hot sun. However, not everyone has a green thumb and sometimes an expert's advice and intervention is needed to make sure our gardens are healthy and will grow to their best potential. Gili Gardens is a recent addition to the Gili family of nature lovers and Niels is a gardener by birth who will take care of your garden's needs.

53 Gililife

GILI ZOOM “Plants are easier to understand than humans”, said Niels, the founder and CEO of Gili Gardens. “You just need to observe them and you immediately understand their need for sunlight, or if they need to be moved.” He added. “Conversely, gardens reflect the personality of who lives in it; by looking at somebody's garden you understand a lot about them and often it gives you an idea of their approach to life.” He added. Niels has always loved nature and worked outdoors all his life. He came to Gili Air to visit his sister Julie, and he fell in love with the island's wild and tropical nature and decided to stay. With Gili Gardens, he offers all kind of services related

Gililife 54

to garden planning and layout, he provides advice on the best plants to grow and when, brings back to life forgotten green zones and make them bloom with fresh plants, flowers and a lot of love. In addition, he is also a skilled handyman and can help fix things; he creates structures and pergolas for climbing plants, offers reparations of pipes, electric systems and even makes furniture! Gili Gardens services are particularly cherished by businesses across the three islands, who approach Niels for landscaping and advice. “I give idea of the plantation and train the staff to take care of the gardens. I also follow up – if there's a problem, I come and fix it according to the planning.” Contact at info@giligardens.com

Niels the Gardener's advice: • A wild well maintained garden is better than a square garden. Always try to preserve its wild side; just a touch of maintenance will make it more beautiful; • If a plant doesn't feel good where it is, it is not going to grow well, we can guide it but we cannot force it; • Find plants that are resistant to all seasons, and no plants needing too much water, so that after dry season they will grow and you will not have to plant again every year! • Place your young seadlings in a sheltered place. You can acclimate them to the place you want them to grow when they have sprouted. • Don't be afraid to prune the frangipani to avoid that the weight of the branches brings down the rest of the tree. If cut often, the plant will be more solid and more structured.

PIRATES' BAY EXPLORING INDONESIA ON A SAILING BOAT GILI AIR

The Indonesian archipelago stretches out across the Southern Seas, connecting the Indian and the Pacific ocean, covering over 5,000 km and hosting unparalleled biodiversity in and out of the sea. This magic environment has attracted adventurers and sailors for centuries, becoming the theatre of cultural and commercial exchanges as well as of bloodthirsty wars perfumed by aromatic spices. It is no wonder then that Indonesia has developed one of the world's richest maritime traditions, and countless types of indigenous sailing vessels have been used to connect the immense diversity of people, customs and islands. Old representations of traditional vessels dating back to the 9th century are pictured in carvings in Borobudur and different construction methods and models have been introduced since then.

The most famous medium-sized vessel is probably the pinisi, a twomasted sailing boat believed to descend from locally built schooner rigged with cloth sails employed by “pirates in the Straits of Malacca. While Makassar and Bugis traders and warriors adapted the boat design for long-distance trading and fishing, the Dutch East-India trading company combined European style vessels to Indonesian traditional designs able to meet the needs of long expeditions in monsoon-bound climates. In the past 20 years, this type of boats has regained popularity and the term pinisi is today used to refer to any kind of wooden vessel built locally. These vessels are employed in the growing marine tourism industry and turned to floating hotels able to cater to tourists' needs, though maintaining their peculiar charm and preserving silent maritime traditions. 57 Gililife

GILI ZOOM Pirates’ Bay Cruising is probably Indonesia's most known and most experienced travel agency specialized in sailing trips across the archipelago. CEO and founder Yasmina is herself a passionate traveller; she fell in love with Indonesia's waters on a sailing trip in Komodo National Park and decided to share this silent and respectful way to travel the world with like-minded people who love exploring the world in respect with nature and traditional culture. Since its humble beginnings, the agency has gone a long way and today Pirates’ Bay Cruising offers sailing cruises to some

of the most popular and most remote spots of this region, including the Banda Sea, Raja Ampat, Sulawesi, Borneo and even Papua. The Agency collaborates with over 15 ships, all traditionally built wooden vessels, each with a different character and professional crew. Choose the Lambo for the most adventurous expeditions, Nataraja if you want to travel in style and combine your cruise with some sea kayaking, freediving or wellness, Antares for first class diving and snorkeling sessions or Kira Kira for a unique liveaboard experience. New routes are opening on a regular basis and more activities added on the agenda by Yasmina and her dynamic and friendly team of collaborators.

TEMPTATIONS BAKERY THE ONE-STOP CAFE & PANTRY FOR EATING AND SHOPPING WELL SENGGIGI

Food trends have changed. People are more and more conscious of the food they eat, and the market demand is increasingly heading towards more natural and less-processed food. The rise of chronic food-related diseases such as obesity, celiac disease and diabetes and the spread of awareness regarding the effects of industrial animal farming on our health and on the planet are pushing many people worldwide to opt for organic products and a vegetarian or vegan diet. Fresh, organic and locally sourced produce are gaining popularity; restaurants specialised in organic food are mushrooming and more and more businesses offer healthier options on their menus. In this respect, Bali has always been a pioneer and Ubud is one of the places in the world where more organic and vegan restaurants are concentrated.

However, until very recently this trend did not cross the Wallace Line and very few businesses in Lombok and the Gili Islands offered a healthy vegetarian menu, let alone organic or import products. Expats willing to go healthy would bring back luggages stuffed with food, slipping in their bags also some imported items difficult to source such as French cheese, Spanish chorizo or Italian ham, to satisfy cravings and longing for home. It is not a surprise that Temptations in Senggigi, Lombok, has become a popular place for local residents and tourists. As the name indicates, this one-stop shop and cafĂŠ caters for all food lovers who cannot resist healthy organic food and quality import products.

61 Gililife

GILI ZOOM As Geoff was busy in the catering industry and Ida was experimenting with home-made cakes and cookies, their house in Senggigi gradually and naturally turned into Temptations, a bakery, shop and cafĂŠ full of carefully selected delicious items. The space is designed to allow customers to relax while tasting on the spot or shopping to cook at home. The bakery is specialized in freshly baked bread, pastries, croissants and cakes, while the retail pantry is heaven for those who are seeking organic and vegan products or quality import items such as dairy products, spices, pulses and dry goods. From home-made jams, relish and chutneys to quinoa, chia seeds and red kidney beans, the whole spectrum of wholefood is

Gililife 62

represented. On the shelves you will find Japanese products such as dry panko or sushio seaweed as well as a variety of European cheeses, from haloumi to cheddar and camembert. The flour section is a tribute to self-taught bakers, who can find avena, gluten-free, corn and buckweat flour and wholefood aficionados will be pleased to know that spirulina, alfa-alfa seeds and wheatgrass powder are available. Beside the great selection of products, Temptations greatest asset is the attention to quality, hygiene and attention to the expiry date as well as the consistency and availability of products. The cozy and comfy setting completes the picture of a perfect dining and shopping experience.

It is said that it is better not to go shopping when hungry, as we may end up buying a lot of junk and ready-to-eat food. Well, this does not apply at Temptations, where eating while shopping is part of the concept. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 9pm, Temptations cafe serves a wide variety of local and Western dishes made on site, including yummy burgers and sandwiches as well as a variety of vegetarian dishes. Indulge in a fish & chips or build your own pizza! Check the selection of soups and salads and the range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including import beers & ciders, smoothies and blended mixes. Temptations cafĂŠ offers outdoor and air-con indoor seating area and reliable wi-fi connection and is the ideal place for all day dining.

GILI FRUIT

PINEAPPLE Pineapples are popular fruits that can be found in the Gili islands all year round. The name pineapple was given by European explorers who saw the fruit for the first time when they reached South America because of the fruit resemblance to a pine cone. However, in Bahasa Indonesian they are called “nanas”, which means “excellent fruit” in Tupi language of South America. This is also the name from which the scientific name originates (Ananas comosus). Pineapples typically grow in bushes and the top of the fruit can be replanted in soil and will produce a new plant. They are juicy fruits typically eaten raw or blended in juices and in some countries the leaves are used to produce textile fiber.

HEALTH BENEFITS Excellent source of Manganese and Vitamin C High content of Bromelain, an enzyme that helps in digestion and is an effective anti-inflammatory Rich in anti-oxydants such as beta carotene, which also boosts eye health Rich source of Fiber, helps reducing high blood pressure and treating irritable bowel syndrome

UPSIDE-DOWN CAKE Originally from the U.S.A., this recipe is typically made with canned pineapples, but it gives its best with fresh ripe ones, which give it a full and tasty flavour. There are thousands of variants; this one is a simple version that can be easily made with ingredients found in the Gili islands in a simple oven. Enjoy!

PREPARATION Peel the pineapple, core it and cut it into thin wedges Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees Prepare the baking pan: brush it with oil and sprinkle the bottom with 1/4 cup of sugar, arrange the pineapple wedges In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside In an other large bowl, mix the buttermilk, eggs, vanilla, oil, and remaining 3/4 cup sugar Add the flour mixture and mix until combined Pour it over the pineapple wedges, level it and smooth the top Bake for about 20 minutes Invert on a plate before serving Gililife 74
