Harmless Dragons & Smart Hunters EN - Monitor lizard are common residents of the Gili islands and, although increasing construction and larger human presence have confined the territory of these beautiful reptiles, they are frequently spotted. Do not be fooled by their dragon-like appearance, these animals belong to the same genus of the fierce and dangerous Komodo dragons, but the species found in the Gilis is harmless. When you happen to meet one, worst-case scenario it will be so scared that it will escape because of fear. To avoid this type of mutually disturbing encounters, do not food leftovers around the place. FR - Les varans sont des habitants courants aux îles Gilis et, même si de plus en plus de bâtiments et de présence humaine ont réduit le territoire de ces reptiles magnifiques, on peut les voir souvent. Ne soyez pas trompés par leur apparence de dragon, ces animaux font partie du même genre des dangereux et farouches dragons de Komodo, mais l'espèce qui habite aux Gilis est inoffensive. Lorsque vous en rencontrez un, au pire des cas il sera tellement effrayé qu'il s'enfuiera par la peur. Pour éviter ce type de rencontres réciproquement dérangeantes, ne laissez pas trainer vos restes de nourriture.

The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island. " There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea, at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans and enjoy a drier Gililife 18

micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes- Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken that unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak Sasak Gili Air which is slightly different to Sasak Lombok.About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on

the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been

introduced over the years. The first Western traveler to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beaten-track paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in. Le premier étranger venu de l'occident est arrivé en 1984 à Gili Air et les premiers touristes, dans les années 90 lorsque Bali a acquis sa réputation mondiale ! Aujourd'hui, les îles Gilis sont de plus en plus populaires et séduisent un bon nombre de voyageurs venus de différentes horizons. Au fil du temps, les habitants des îles Gili se sont adaptés à une multitude de changements et d'immersions culturelles, mais ont réussi à conserver leur identité. Historiquement, ils ont vécu des moments difficiles. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'île de Lombok et les Gilis étaient occupées par les forces japonaises. Les îles ont été utilisées pour maintenir les prisonniers de guerre et les habitants ont subi le travail forcé. Une colline située au sud de Trawangan a été utilisée comme poste d'observation et aujourd'hui les vestiges d'un bunker demeurent. When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything- including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumored growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling Gililife 20

It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkeling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation- ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know- there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

La plus grande et la plus développée des trois îles Gili a gagné cette réputation car elle offre un large éventail de tout y compris pour la vie nocturne. Il y a des fêtes tous les soirs de la semaine qui attirent de grandes foules de tous les coins du globe ! Commencez par faire un petit tour sur la place du marché pour goûter les délicieux plats locaux, puis laissez-vous tenter par le son des concerts live, des DJ résidents, dans les différents bars ou sur la plage ! Il est aussi possible de visionner des films en plein air. Trawangan est l'îlot du "Glam" avec ses resorts, ses spas, ses restaurants chics, ses boutiques et son héliport ! C'est la plaque tournante de charme pour un grand nombre de voyageurs. Trawangan est l'île du choix et convient à tous les budgets et à tous les styles de vie. Que vous soyez "routards" ou que vous recherchiez un logement de grand standing, tout est possible. La nourriture est très diverse et internationale, vous aurez aussi un grand choix d'activités et de divertissements ! Gili T possède de très belles plages aux eaux limpides et cristallines idéales pour la plongée et la balade aquatique en masque, palme, tuba (snorkeling).

Cette île possède quelques-uns des plus beaux jardins de corail et le plus grand nombre de centres de plongée. Bien qu'elle soit surtout connue comme une île "de fête", Gili T cache un nature dense et douce, aventurez-vous loin des côtes pour découvrir la magnifique cocoteraie ou les plages désertes de la côte ouest. N'ayant aucun transport motorisé aux îles Gilis, la location d'un vélo est un excellent moyen de découvrir l'île, et aussi une expérience aventureuse ! La vie ici est surréaliste, c'est un mélange d'exotisme et de vie occidentale ! Il existe plusieurs organisations de conservation sur Gili T comme Gili Eco Trust (GET), Gili Shark Fondation et bien d'autres... Demandez autour de vous, dans les centres de plongée comment vous impliquer ! Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. It is the least developed island where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. Here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. There are no bicycle rentals in Meno but it's possible to walk the island in an hour. Gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There are also traditional warungs

for popular local dish- nasi campur. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air barugastyle accommodation for the true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making Gili Meno an ideal travel destination. In the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apa- no problem!! ➜ Gili Meno is the island of sweet simplicity and nature where you will sigh with happiness Située entre Gili Air et Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno possède sans doute les plus belles plages de toutes les îles Gili . Do you know about the...Bougainvillea? Connaissez-vous le...Bougainvillier ?

Bougainvillea is a common plant in the Gilis, where it can be seen decorating many gardens. Depending on the species, it can grow up to 12 metres, but is also grown in hanging baskets or as bonsai. Being a climbing plant, bougainvillea is often used to create colourful shaded pergolas where to relax on hot days. These shrubs are characterised by a strong trunk and thin long branches that bear sharp thorns that the plant uses to attach to and climb along walls and surfaces. Le bougainvillier est une plante très courante aux Gilis. On l'utilise pour décorer les jardins. Selon l'espèce, il peut atteindre 12 mètres de hauteur mais on le cultive aussi dans des pots suspendus ou comme des bonsaïs. Etant donné que c'est une plante grimpante, on l'utilise souvent pour créer des pergolas ombrageuses pour se relaxer pendant les chaudes journées. Ces arbustes sont caractérisés par un tronc épais et des branches longues et fines avec des épines pointues que la plante utilise pour s'attacher et grimper sur les murs et les surfaces.

The name

The name Bougainvillea comes from Louis Antoine de Bougainville, the French explorer and scientist who first described this plant in 1768 when he visited Brazil on the occasion of the first French voyage around the world. However, the local name of this plant is “bunga kertas”, literally meaning “paper flower”. Indonesians call it in this way because the texture of the bougainvillea thin bracts resembles the one of paper. Le Bougainvillier doit son nom à Louis Antoine de Bougainville, un explorateur et scientifique français. Il est le premier à décrire cette plante en 1768, quand il visita le Brésil lors de son premier voyage autour du monde. HABITAT

Originally from Central and South America, Bougainvillea are now cultivated in all warm regions of the world. They like sunny moist environments, but they can resist drought. Ils poussent mieux dans les environnements humides et ensoleillés, mais ils résistent à la sécheresse.

The Flower - Les fleurs

Bright green leaves, colourful bracts and small whitish flowers grow along

the branches of the bougainvillea. In fact, a closer look to the plant will make you realise that the flowers are very tiny and of a light colour, whereas it is the bracts that make this plant so colourful. Bougainvillea can be of different shades of pink, red, yellow and even white or bicoloured. In tropical regions they flower all year round. Les bougainvilliers ont des feuilles vertes brillantes, des bractées colorées et des petites fleurs blanches qui poussent le long des branches. En fait, si vous observez la plante de près, vous vous rendrez compte que les fleurs sont très petites et de couleur clair, alors que ce sont les bractées qui rendent la plante aussi colorée. The Glenn Nusa, New Wreck in Gili Trawangan Le Glenn Nusa, une nouvelle épave à Gili Trawangan

After lots of hard work and efforts between the Gili Island Dive Association (GIDA) and the Gili Eco Trust, in February 2016, a ship was sunk in the beautiful, clear waters of Gili Trawangan, creating a brand new dive wreck. The Glenn Nusa is a 1952 tug boat originally from Germany and brought to Indonesia in the 1980’s. It measures at 24m long and is 7m wide. It sits at a depth of around 28m of water, the top at roughly 22m depth. The new wrek is located at the end of Halik and beginning of Shark Point. Come, check it out! The Gili Eco Trust hope to sink some more wrecks and are then able to connect them to biorock systems with renewable energy such as solar panels or marine turbines. info@giliecotrust.com Après de longs mois de travail et de nombreux efforts entre Gili Island Dive Association (GIDA), (l’association des plongeurs des îles Gili), et Gili Eco Trust, un navire a été volontairement coulé dans les magnifiques eaux limpides de Gili T en février 2016. Création d'une nouvelle épave pour les plongeurs à Trawangan. Le Glenn Nusa est un bateau remorqueur datant de 1952 en provenance d’Allemagne et importé en Indonésie dans les années 1980. Il mesure 22 mètres de long et 7 mètres de large. Il est immergé à une profondeur d'environ 28 mètres et la partie supérieure est à environ 22 mètres. C'est la première fois qu’un tel projet voit le jour aux îles Gili, ce qui rend le Glenn Nusa unique. L’épave est colonisée par les coraux et fleurit dans ce récif artificiel. De nombreux efforts ont été faits pour restaurer et développer de nouveaux coraux dans ces eaux, ce fut un travail complexe qui a occupé de nombreuses journées. Cette épave toute neuve est située à la fin de Halik et au début de Shark Point. Gili Eco Trust espère créer d’autres épaves artificielles à l’avenir, en les reliant à des systèmes Biorock ainsi qu’à des énergies renouvelables, comme des panneaux solaires ou des turbines marines. Hosting a pumping Main Stage featuring local and international djs and producers and an eruptive Fire Space with performances all night long, this year's event kicks off on the morning of April 8th with a Circus Show at Gili Air primary school SD, where professional performers will amaze children and adults alike with clowning, juggling and acrobatics gigs. the most beautiful corals of the Gilis... Les plux beaux coraux de Gili... Located east of Meno, Mirko's Reef is probably the site where you can find the largest concentration variety of marine life in the Gilis. From the macro (schrimp, sea slug, leaf fish...) to the biggest (ray, turtle...) passing trough the reef fish (trevally, batfish, cardinalfish, sweetlips,surgeonfish, triggerfish, puffer and boxfish, scorpionfish...) all are attracted by the coral's diversity where they come to feed and seek refuge. Corals of all kinds found here (table, cauliflower, finger, leafy cup, dark cup coral, sea fan and also sea-squirt, anemone, sponge) and mostly in perfect condition, are the main interest on that site with a promise of a colorful dive. Its relief and topography will allow you to dive up to 30 meters for the farthest valley from the shore, but with an average depth of 16 meters any diver will be welcome. Localisé à l'est de Gili Meno, Mirko's reef est probablement le site où vous retrouverez la plus grande concentration et variété de vie marine possible aux îles Gilis. De la macro (crevette, nudibranche, poisson feuille) au plus gros (raie, tortue...) en passant par les poissons de récif (carangue, platax, apogon, gaterin, poisson chirurgien, baliste, poisson globe et coffre, poisson scorpion...); tous attirés par l'abondance et la diversité des coraux où ils viennent se nourrir et trouver refuge. Des coraux de toute sorte (corail tabulaire, géant, choufleur, digiforme, salade, tubastré, gorgone, mais aussi anémone, éponge) et surtout en parfait état, sont l'interêt principal de ce site et promettent une plongée très colorée. Son relief vous permettra de plonger jusqu'à 30 mètres, pour la vallée la plus éloignée du bord, mais avec une profondeur moyenne d'environ 16 mètres, tout plongeur sera le bienvenu. Gililife 40

The Spanish Dancer is the world's largest nudibranch, measuring up to 40cm in length. It owes its common name to the bright red colour of its body and for its unique way to swim. Although it mainly moves by crawling, when threatened this gastropod propels forward by flapping its gills, reminding of a Flamenco dancer's skirt. It is the only nudibranch known for moving in this way. La Danseuse Espagnole est le nudibranche le plus grand au monde et peut mesurer jusqu'à 40 cm de longueur. Il doit son nom commun à la couleur rouge vive de son corps et à sa façon singulière de nager. Il se déplace principalement en rampant. Toutefois, lorsqu'il se sent menacé, ce gastéropode se lance en avant en déroulant ses bords et rassemblant ainsi à la jupe d'une danseuse de flamenco. C'est le seul nudibranche connu qui se déplace de cette façon.

HABITAT

Spanish Dancers are found near shallow coral and rocky reefs all across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to Africa, Hawaii and Southeast Asia. La Danseuse Espagnole vit près des récifs coralliens et rocheux peu profonds. On le trouve dans tout l'Indo-Pacifique, la mer Rouge, l’Afrique jusqu’à Hawaï et au sud-est de l'Asie.

DIET - ALIMENTATION

Spanish Dancers feed on sponges, soft corals and bryozoa. They also feed on poisonous jellyfish, and assimilate this venom for their own defense. They have specialized front tentacles called rhinophores that allow them to sense smell and noise. La Danseuse Espagnole se nourrit d'éponges, coraux mous et bryozoaires. REPRODUCTION

These nudibranchs are hermaphrodites, but cannot self-fertilize and always need a mate to reproduce. They do so by approaching their bodies and exchanging male gametes internally. There is no parental care, but the eggs are brightly coloured and highly toxic, which warns predators and prevents the eggs from being eaten. Although very visible in the reef, Spanish Dancers have few predators. This is due to their amazing protection strategies. Snorkeling (mask, snorkel, fins) is a good way to freely explore the waters around Gili islands! You can see turtles, all kinds of fish, blue-spotted stingrays... Let yourself drift with the current, whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong! You can rent the equipment very easily on all three islands. Another alternative is a snorkeling trip - a day out on a boat. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, visiting the best snorkeling spots of the three islands. You stop for lunch and finish about 4pm. You can book this trip on site or at your hotel. Rainy season is going to end soon, and the sea has brought all kinds of debris on the beaches of the Gilis. Since these islands’s reputation is growing every day, it attracts more tourists. As a result, there is an increase of consumption, bringing a huge amount of plastic waste and packaging to the island, which has a terrible impact on the fauna and the flora, either on land or underwater. Nowadays, a 7th continent made of millions of tons of plastic particles is floating in the middle of the ocean. What can we do about this? Become a volunteer and take part in a local trash cleanup on land and /or underwater. Many organizations on each island offer cleaning days. It's easy, just get to the meeting point and pick up everything you can. Alternatively, visit your dive center and make a free dive to Gililife 54

In the Gilis, monitor lizards commonly roam around during hot days in search for easy prey such as chicken eggs, rodents and birds. Their fierce appearance and resemblance with the creepy and deadly Komodo dragon is nothing but kinship. In fact, monitor lizards found in the Gilis are just their gentle cousins and are only guilty of stealing eggs... When you spot one, you will probably not even have the time to take out your camera before it disappears in some damp hole in the jungle scared to death by your human frightening presence. Aux Gilis, les varans se baladent couramment pendant les journées chaudes à la recherche de proies faciles telles que les œufs de poule, les rats et les oiseaux. Leur apparence féroce et leur ressemblance avec le terrifiant et létal dragon de Komodo n'est rien que de la parenté. En fait, les varans qu'on trouve aux Gilis ne sont que leur gentils cousins et ne sont coupables que de voler des œufs... Monitor lizards (Varanus sp.) are large reptiles commonly found all across Asia, as well as in Africa, India and Australia. They are robust animals with a strong and powerful tail and a long and forked tongue. They live in the jungle and some species are linked to the water and live next to rivers and swamps. There are many species of monitor lizards and their size ranges from 20cm to 3 metres and they can weight up to 70 kg ! Most of them are carnivorous and feed on small birds, fish, other reptiles and small mammals such rodents, but also love eggs, vegetables and fruit. They can live up to 30 years and are oviparous; females lay up to 30 eggs per year, which they hatch after about a month. Mating is a violent encounter that involves a lot of biting and slapping. If you see two monitor lizards fighting, it is probably two males competing for a female or two lovers getting intimate ! Gililife 58

Les varans (Varanus sp.) sont de grands reptiles qu'on trouve couramment dans toute l'Asie, aussi bien en Afrique, en Inde et en Australie. Ce sont des animaux robustes qui ont une queue forte et puissante et une langue longue et fourchue. Ils vivent dans la jungle et certaines espèces sont liées à l'eau et vivent à côté des rivières et des marais. Il existe beaucoup d'espèces de varan. Cold-blooded smart hunters Chasseurs malins à sang froid Like many other reptiles, monitor lizards are often perceived as being slow, starting a day’s hunt with a long bask in the sun or resting motionless in the shade. Waiting, immobile, for a prey to walk by, they will suddenly storm out to attack. What is the reason behind this behaviour? Like other reptiles, monitor lizards tend to optimise their precious energy. Like fish and amphibians, they are “cold-blooded” or ectothermic animals, whose body temperature conforms to that of their surroundings. They get their energy from external sources, like the sun, and must regulate their temperature through behaviour such as withdrawing to the shade. By contrast, “warm-blooded” animals such as mammals and birds create their own body heat using energy from food. Although preventing them from sustaining long periods of activity, reptiles’ slow metabolism does not need to be frequently fuelled by feeding. This allows them to survive in environments where food is scarcer. Though they move and eat less, monitor lizards are carnivores that need to find prey, which they sense with their tongue. The hunting techique varies

according to the species; some will sit and wait until their lunch walks by, while others patiently stalk their dinner. When monitor lizards in the Gilis find their prey, they run fast after it! In Bahasa Indonesia, monitor lizards are known as « Biawak » ; however, in the Gilis you will often hear local people talking about « Pejawak », the Sasak Gili name, or « Juwak », the Sasak Lombok name. Most monitor lizards in the Gilis are water monitors (Varanus salvator) and usually live in holes and swamps in the most humid parts of the islands. In Gili Air, a big lizard population lives just behind Segar Villages and Biba Beach, in Gili Meno they can be spotted hunting near the salty lake, while in Gili Trawangan they hang out close to the rubbish dump. Air Terjun Sindang Gila is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in northern Lombok. The Tanjung Aan bay is huge with pristine, fine, white sand on one side, and on the other, a golden sandy beach with large grains. A central rock separates the two different beaches and you can climb it to admire the magnificent view ! La anse de Tanjung Aan est immense : d’un côté, un sable blanc immaculé très fin, de l’autre, un sable doré aux gros grains. Un rocher central sépare les deux différentes plages que l’on peut escalader pour admirer la magnifique vue !

Selong Blanak is a beautiful bay strewn with small shops. The main attraction is surfing but however, swimming remains possible. The waves are perfect for beginners. You will easily find somewhere to rent a board for a few hours. Selong Blanak est une très belle anse jonchée de petites échoppes. L’attraction principale est le surf mais la baignade reste, toutefois, possible. Les vagues sont parfaites pour les débutants. Vous trouverez facilement de quoi louer une planche pour quelques heures.

& Tulamben Amed is a small town located at the eastern tip of Bali. It is a typical Balinese fishing village where life is nice and very relaxed. The center stretches along a road where you can choose your accommodation, find good restaurants or local warungs, and see many dive centers. Located close to Mount Agung, Amed is a black sand bay and is the ideal base to explore the many dive sites nearby. Marine biodiversity is very rich, from steep walls to "macro" dives. There is also the famous Liberty wreck, the finest dive site in the area. Tulamben is located a few kilometers up north of Amed. You can start your dive from the beach, with a gradual descent to the sandy bottom. The wreck is covered with colorful corals and it is not uncommon to see large schools of jack fish. The current is very low, which makes diving accessible to beginners. We recommend Baruna Dive Center, a very nice club on a human scale with a competent and friendly team, which offers personalized service for divers. You can also rent a scooter and drive around Amed. Head south and follow the coastal road between Amed and Candidasa to Ujung. The walk is beautiful! Initially, a multitude of luxurious resort was built on the cliff along the highway with breathtaking views of the ocean. Gradually, you will notice that hotels give way to beautiful rocky coves inhabited by local fishermen. Also, if you have the strength and a little daring, you can rent a boat from local and try to go to the Gili Islands from Amed. In the distance, one can see the hill of Gili Trawangan. There are also some typical black pigs farming villages inland! The vegetation is beautiful, and you will really see the traditional Bali here. There is another option for rice field lovers: take the direction of Amed-Amlapura to go to Candidasa, which is in the south. Hidden rice fields offer a spectacular view, again this is the real Bali! On the road, stop at Pura Lempuyang temple, one of the ninth directional temples of Bali. If you have time, try to go there in the early morning, as it is possible to hike about 3/4 hours to visit this temple and those nearby. And why not continue on the southern road and visit Candidasa! La Biodiversité marine est très riche allant de tombants vertigineux à des plongées « macro » jusqu’à la fameuse épave « Liberty », site « phare » du coin située à Tulamben à quelques kilomètres au nord. La mise à l’eau se fait à partir de la plage avec une descente progressive le long du fond sablonneux. L’épave est recouverte de coraux multicolores et il n’est pas rare de voir un grand banc de carangues. Le courant est très faible ce qui facilite la plongée et qui la rend accessible aux débutants. Nous vous recommandons le centre de plongée Baruna Dive Center, centre agréable à échelle humaine avec une équipe compétente et sympathique qui offre aux Gililife 72

plongeurs un service personnalisé. Vous pourrez également louer un scooter et vous promener autour d’Amed. Prenez la direction du sud sur la route côtière reliant Amed à Candidasa jusqu’à Ujung. La balade est magnifique ! Au départ une multitude de Resort luxueux « accrochés » à la falaise longent la route avec une vue imprenable sur l’océan. Petit à petit les hôtels laissent place à de magnifiques criques rocailleuses où vivent les pêcheurs locaux. D’ailleurs si vous avez le courage et un peu d’audace vous pourrez louer un bateau auprès des locaux et tenter la traversée Amed-Gilis. Au loin, on peut apercevoir la colline de Gili Trawangan ! Ensuite vous passerez à l’intérieur des terres où se trouvent de typiques villages d’éleveurs

de cochon noir ! La végétation est belle, on se sent vraiment dans le Bali profond. Autre option, pour les amoureux des rizières, la route à l’intérieur des terres. Prenez la direction Amed-Amlapura, toujours en direction de Candidasa vers le sud. Des rizières à perte de vue offre un spectacle magique, là encore nous sommes dans le Bali profond ! Sur la route, arrêtez-vous au temple « Pura Lempuyang » un des neuf temple directionnel de Bali. Si vous avez le temps, partez tôt le matin car il est possible de faire une randonnée de 3/4 h pour visiter ce temple et ceux aux alentours. Et pourquoi pas continuer sur la route du sud et visiter Candidasa !

Warung is one of the words in Bahasa Indonesian you are likely to hear more often. Meaning “small restaurant”, in Indonesia and in Malaysia a warung is an institution that indicates local food at a cheap price and in a familiar atmosphere. This word does not indicate the speed the meal will be served and it can be a fast food restaurant or a slow pace one according to what you decide to eat. If you go for nasi campur (mix rice), you will just have to pick what you want from the dishes on display and eat it right away. If you go for the warung best sellers such as mie goreng (fried noodles), nasi goreng (fried rice) or soto ayam (chicken soup), you will have the time to crack into a couple of krupuk (rice crackers) and burn your lips sipping a teh manis panas (sweetened hot tea) before you get served. In case you are daring and order some Western dish on the menu, you may end up spending the whole day in the warung and eventually become a member of the local family who run the place!

METHOD - PREPARATION Cut your avocados in half, remove the pit and remove the flesh with a teaspoon. In a blender, add the yogurt, condensed milk, sugar and the flesh of the avocados. Mix until obtaining a smooth cream. If it is too thick, add more milk. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy! This enormous primitive monitor lizard, probably the size of a dragon, spends most of its time sleeping on a pile of gold and jewelry somewhere under the surface of each island. There are cidomos (horse and cart) available for hire on the three islands and bicycle rentals on GILI T, Gili Air and now Gili meno. Vous pouvez vous déplacer en Cidomo (charrette à cheval) sur les 3 îles ou louer un vélo sur Gili T, Gili Air et maintenant à Gili Meno

On Gili Air public boats leave to Lombok starting at 7:30am. Meno to Lombok, twice a day, at 8am and 3pm. And on Gili T starting at 7am until 5pm.
