THE GILI ISLANDS
CULTURE & HISTORY
The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature
Gililife 24
of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis
and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.
ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE GILI ISLANDS • Always use your right hand when you give/ take/ eat/ touch • • Never point at something with your foot • • When you are a guest, wait until you are invited to sit down • • Remove your shoes before entering a house, shop or any other place • • Never get angry, always try to solve problems with a smile • • The Gili islands are Muslim, and it is sometimes inappropriate to walk around in a state of undress, going topless can be translated as a lack of respect •

THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN
TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every Gililife 26
corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of
crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including Gili Eco Trust (GET) and The Gili Shark Foundation-
GILI TRAWANGAN
ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know - there is no motorized transport in the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II. 27 Gililife

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE
MENO Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle, where time seems Gililife 28
to bend and life seems to slow down. Out of the three Gili’s, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by big crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet

interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE
The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 30

This months featured species
The
SEA ANEMONE
Sea anemone are a beautiful sight in the world’s coral reefs; their colourful tentacles swaying with the currents are a soothing presence that may give the impression the ocean is breathing! Found across the world at different depths, sea anemone are common marine invertebrates that we can also easily observe in Gili’s underwater world. They are known for developing symbiotic relationships with other organisms such as zooxanthelles, to whom they provide protection and sunlight in exchange for oxygen and sugar or with hermit
crabs, who help them moving around in exchange for protection. Sea anemone’s most famous relationship is with clown fish, who exchanges protection for food found in the tentacles! Sea anemones can be from 1 cm to 2mt of size and typically feature a mouth at the centre of the body surrounded by an array of venomous tentacles. They use their tentacles to paralyse, catch prey and bring it to their mouth.
Did you know... Sea anemone can reproduce sexually and asexually. In asexual reproduction, they split in 2 distinct individuals.

ACTIVITIES
TURTLES GUARANTEED!! PLUS Beautiful corals and all kinds of fish!
SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.
Gililife 36
Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of revallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.
ACTIVITIES
A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE
FREEDIVING
Learn to dive deeper on just one breath, without any equipment except your fins and mask ! Freediving is the most natural and quiet way to explore and get closer to animals underwater and is a discipline that teaches you to relax and be at ease with yourself. The best way to learn is from a professional and in the Gili islands many dive centres are specialised in freediving and offer courses and dives for all levels, in different sites and ensuring safety first at all times. Freediving teaches us about the connection between our body and mind, patience, perceived limitations and challenging our self-imposed boundaries. What we learn in the water can also be applied to our daily lives on dry land. There are many different aspects to apnea, including underwater hockey, underwater rugby, spearfishing etc. You just need to find your favourite way of being underwater.

MORE GILI ISLAND
WATERSPORTS The Gili islands offer endless possibilities to water lovers beside diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the underwater world
without adventuring into the ocean. Otherwise, you can rent a Kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a Stand-Up Paddle Board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice Surf spots which are
worth a “dawnie, you just need to be aware of currents and tides and a bit experienced. Subwing is the ultimate watersport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while Parasailing will bring you to new heights to then safely land in the water! Have fun!

ACTIVITIES
YOGA
GET CONNECTED
Gililife 40
It's no wonder that the Gilis are becoming a popular yoga destination. Stunning ocean views, colourful striped skies profiling Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung at sunrise and sunset and the natural setting make the Gilis an inspiring place to practice. Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of picky yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.
Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice in the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!
ACTIVITIES
TREAT YOURSELF
SPA Gililife 42
There is no better way to relax after a day of diving and snorkelling or cruising around the Gilis than receiving a good massage. Many spas in the three islands offer different types of massages as well as all kinds of beauty treatments. If you like it strong, we suggest to try traditional Sasak or Balinese massage, while for a more relaxing treatment, probably an Ayurvedic massage is the best option. Pedicure and manicure for both men and women or different waxing techniques are available; earcandles is a relaxing and unique way to have your ears cleaned and foot reflexology an excellent antidote to feet tired of walking around the islands. You can choose to receive your treatment in an oceanview spa or in the quietness of a bamboo breezy terrace; also check out the spas of the best hotels on the islands, as they offers quality treatments at a good price.
MORE FUN ONLAND
OTHER ACTIVITIES There are uncountable activities you can enjoy on land in all three islands. You can decide to learn how to cook delicious dishes from Indonesian cuisine or how to make jewellery, and even take part in an art class! You may find yourself exploring WWII bunker remnants in Trawangan or riding a horse at sunset, sweating in the gym or dancing to the rhythm of salsa! Try capoeira, samba, or explore different styles of yoga such as fly-high, sunset meditation, aerial silk or acroyoga! When night falls, go for a movie on the beach or squeeze your brain and join a quiz night. If you want to mingle with the locals, join them for a football or beachball match on the beach or challenge them in a badminton game! Check the latest updates at one of the local agencies or ask at the reception of your hotel.

Before After

47 Gililife
Gililife 48
BEFORE & AFTER
Once upon a time
there was a fisherman’s village
Today the Gili’s Islands are one of the most developed and tourist areas of Indonesia alongside Bali, the cities and the historical sites. However, this is a very recent development and until not so long ago the Gili’s were nothing but semi-deserted islands where occasional visitors would come to spend endless lazy days connecting with the locals under coconut trees, playing guitar and enjoying power cuts. In the Gili’s, air-conditioned rooms and swimming pools are a very recent invention, let alone wi-fi or cappuccino! Imagine the Gili islands without Scallywags or La Trattoria, without Scooperific, Kayu Cafe or Oceans 5! Imagine the Gili’s without pizzas, cocktails with import alcohol,
imagine long stretches of empty beaches, a couple of – always out of order – internet cafes and a Siti Shop as big as your bathroom! Out of the three, Gili Trawangan was the first to open to international tourism and to accommodate their demands. Expats living on the other Gili’s would go there to enjoy an espresso, a hamburger and even to withdraw money! In fact, there were no ATMs on the islands until 2008, when the first one was established on Trawangan. Before then, people would have to go all the way to Senggigi! It may be hard to imagine now, but very few restaurants would serve Western food and absolutely no pork was to be found! 49 Gililife
BEFORE & AFTER
Differences then &now between
WATER Water was sourced from local wells and, except some areas in Gili Air, salty water only was coming from the taps! Since 2015, the national water company supplies the islands with fresh water via underwater cables and most businesses and private houses today get their water supply in this way. In Trawangan only, a system of reverse osmosis is in place because no fresh water sources are on the island. Gililife 50
ELECTRICITY Electricity arrived in 1994 in Gili T., in 1998 in Gili Air and in 2002 in Gili Meno. Each island used to have 3-4 generators to supply the islands with electricity from 6 to 10 pm for the first few years and then for 24 hrs a day, but not on the whole island at the same time! Power used to be distributed by area; everyday you would only get a few hours electricity according to your area, which means that ibu (old ladies) watching soap operas on TV would migrate to someone’s else house in another area in order not miss the end of the episode! Only maximum two plugs were allowed per house in order to limit the power use and few household had a TV, let alone other electronic devices! This system ran until 2012, when the Gili’s were connected to the mainland central grid following an electrification program by the PLN (national power company). Today, power is transmitted by means of an undersea cable network, which spans over 4 km at a maximum depth of 30 mt.
INTERNET Today, most restaurants and hotels across the three islands have wi-fi. Although the connection is not always reliable, before you complain consider that you are on an island surrounded by strong currents and that the whole internet system is very, very recent. In 2008, there was one internet cafe in Trawangan and one in Gili Air, which, due to very frequent power cuts, most of the time weren’t operational. Remember, there were no smartphones at that time, so the only way to check your emails and communicate with the outside world was to cycle (or take a boat) all the way to the nearest internet cafe and hope for the best. You would usually end up having a refreshing canned drink with the owners and playing with the local kids. It was a patience exercise and surely not a paradise for digital nomads or Facebook influencers.
TRANSPORT Surely, the development of the transport system has greatly contributed to the Gili’s islands’ popularity. Today, you can easily reach the Gilis via a relative comfortable 2hrs boat ride from Bali. You can choose if coming by plane to Lombok from international destinations such as Singapore or Kuala Lumpur and you can even get a private helicopter transfer from Bali! Until few years ago, this was science fiction! Firstly, there were no speed boats. The first speed boat company was established in 2009 and a one way ticket to Bali costed almost 1 million rupees (80 USD). Most people would come from Bali to the Gili’s by ferry, changing in Lembar with a taxi or bemo to Bangsal and hop on a local boat. The whole journey lasted about 12 hours. Another option was the (in) famous Perama boat, which was somewhere in between a local cruise ship and a transport boat. 350,000 rupees one way for a journey at sea of about 3-4 hours, with a local food buffet included in the price! Lombok airport was located in Ampenan near Mataram and only operated local flights. It’s only with the opening of the new airport near Kuta Lombok in late 2011 that visitors started arriving from international destinations. 51 Gililife

FOOD Until ten years ago, there were only local warungs on the islands and sometimes not even those! Locals would make food in their houses and specialise in some items. Nasi Bungkus (take away mixed rice) was the only food available beside home-made gado-gado and satay and no food could be found after 9 pm! Trawangan was the first one to get daily supplies from Bali and the arrival of feta cheese at the local Siti shop was considered as a major upgrade! Biba Beach on Gili Air were the first to serve real pasta and salads and Scallywags and other Western restaurants only started after 2010! Gililife 52
DIVE CENTRES The first dive centres to be established in the Gili’s were Blue Coral, Blue Marlin, Dive Indonesia, and Albatros Dive. Then followed Big Bubble dive, Dream divers, Manta dive and Vila Ombak. No centres in Gili Meno, and mostly all operating from Trawangan. At first there was a bit of a “price war” and unnecessary competition among them, which was soon settled by an agreement, which set the prices on a regular basis to guarantee quality standards at all times. Since 2012, the Gili Islands Divers’ Association (GIDA) regulates all matters related to prices, dive safety, regulations and cooperation among dive shops.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Less than twenty years ago, the Gili islands’ marine biodiversity was in serious trouble, as destructive fishing with dynamite and cyanide was the norm. The coral reef deeply suffered from these fishing methods and some of its impact can still be seen now. In 1999 a group of locals founded the SATGAS cooperative in order to prevent these practices and were soon supported by the Gili Eco Trust, which was funded in 2000. With the support of the local population and dive shops, the Gili Eco Trust has greatly grown since, expanding to include a variety of activities to raise awareness, protect and preserve the environment of the Gili Islands. Today, the organisation runs marine conservation and waste management programs, is involved in protecting biodiversity in and out the water, runs environment educational activities and since 2004 it develops the Biorock project, a system of artificial reefs that are helping restore the local coral reefs.
MEDICAL CLINICS & HOSPITALS The first clinic was established in Vila Ombak in Gili Trawangan in 1999. Before then if you were sick you could try your chance at the local posyandu or pusksemas (community health clinic) or trust in magic and traditional healers. Riza clinic in Mataram mall was the closest “international” medical clinic, otherwise you could check the local hospital, where there were no private rooms and patients and their families would squat on the corridor floor waiting for something to happen! The first decompression chamber in Lombok was set up in 2001, but only for one person at the time. The dentist in Mataram mall only operated after 5 pm, so if coming from the Gili’s you had to stay overnight (no night transport back available) and pray for the best, as the dentist cabinet looked like a painter and sculptor’s workshop! For any serious issue, you would have to go to Bali!

BEFORE & AFTER
Unchanged What remains
in the Gili Islands
The Gili’s remain motor-vehicle free and one of the few places in the world where there the only means of transport available are your own feet, pushbikes, horse carts and, more recently, electric bikes! Cows roam more or less freely, kids are safe running and playing around the islands and the Gili’s remain a very safe place at any time of the day and of the night! Gili’s residents love for a laid-back and simple life, you will always find a group of young guitar players happy to sing and play all night long on the beach! The Gili’s beaches are still the place where to relax, play with the fish in transparent waters and snorkel with the turtles! Last but not least: its stunning sunrises and sunsets! Everyday different, everyday amazing, regardless of what happens around!
If now you find things are slow and backward, remember you are on a tropical island that has experienced very fast and recent development and....be patient! Also, realise that all the resources you find now are the result of a lot of work and negotiation and are not endless, be considerate! Gililife 54

BREADELICIOUS YOUR FRENCH BAKERY IN GILI AIR GILI AIR In many cultures, bread is synonymous with nourishment and subsistence, and symbolises the simple pleasures without which life is meaningless. From the Mediterranean sea to the Gangga river and the Sahara desert, bread represents food in its purest and simplest state, crossing religious, cooking and political traditions. Roti or chapati nourish billions of people in the Sub-Continent, unleavened azym bread is used in religious ceremonies in the Middle East and a Russian proverb states that bread turns any situation into heaven. In France, the price of bread was the tip of the iceberg for the discontent that eventually led to the French revolution; many historians claim the popularity of French bakeries started right after those intense
times, when the cooks employed by the nobility had to re-invent a living. It is not surprising then that bakeries are so much associated with French culture! Indeed, bakeries are an institution and a pillar of a village society in many parts of the world. Serving freshly baked bread daily and a variety of other sweet and savoury treats and specialties such as pastries, sandwiches and cakes, bakeries support the happiness and well-being of a society! In Gili Air, life has improved since the arrival of Breadelicious, the first and only real bakery on the island. RH MEDICAL YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR WEALTH! GILI TRAWANGAN Nobody wants to be sick or have an accident when on holiday but.... it happens! This is why it is important to be prepared and know what do to in case something goes wrong. Don’t forget that the Gili’s are small islands where there is not a proper hospital and medical supplies come from the mainland, so it’s always good to be ready for action in the unfortunate case of a bad adventure. Most problems people have in the Gili’s are due to bad digestion, excessive sun exposure and cuts caused by snorkeling in shallow areas, but sometimes it can happen to feel some symptoms we are not sure about, so it’s always good to ask the advice of an expert!
Many medical centres can be found across the three islands, and this is a great service for immediate relief and first aid support, also because most of them are open 24/7 and can send a doctor to your hotel for a visit. They also have the means to organise an emergency medical evacuation via a fast boat and airplane ambulance. At the clinics you can find qualified nurses to get advice on your condition as well as a small pharmacy where to purchase basic medication. However, in case you need a doctor’s advice, it is always better to go to a larger hospital in Lombok, as local medical centres only serve as an emergency immediate support. 63 Gililife
GILI ZOOM RH Medical in Gili Trawangan is Gili Life’s medical centre of choice. It was created with tourist’s health as their core mission and are committed to provide treatment and take action based on quality procedures, offering competitive prices. RH Medical is a Government partner in providing medical services covering prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Located close to Ombak Sunset, this medical centre has a professional team available for consultation and offers a variety of emergency and treatment services such as: • 24 Hour medical emergency room • GP Consultation • Hotel on call doctor • Pharmacy • Laboratory • Minor surgery • Medical check-up • Vaccination • Medical evacuation
Gililife 64
Medical centres are the place to go when: • In case of a serious accident and in need to be brought to the nearest hospital urgently • If you feel you have broken something and you need some emergency solution • To get the advice of a doctor to better understand your health condition • To buy basic pain killers, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, emergency medication (bandages, disinfectant, etc.) • To get stitches, injections, to follow up an injury or medical condition RH Medical collaborates with Islamic Siti Hajar Hospital in Lombok and BIMC (Bali International Medical Centre) in Bali, some of the most renown private hospitals in the area!

FREEDIVE AIR FREE TO EXPLORE GILI AIR Apnea, or free diving, is sometimes mistakenly considered an activity alternative to scuba diving; you will hear people say that it is “the same thing than scuba but without equipment”. However, this is not the case, as not only is freediving a distinct and very different sport to scuba diving, but it also develops and requires different divers’ qualities and allows to appreciate a dive site differently than diving with an oxygen tank and a regulator. Apnea is the most natural way to go under water; at the end of the day...didn’t we all spend 9 months in water before coming to this world? Free dive also offers more opportunities to interact with marine life than scuba diving; fish are less
scared and more curious to approach a human body freely swimming next to them rather than a noisy figure that makes a lot of bubbles as scuba divers do. Unlike common beliefs, anyone can freedive, and, as Livio, a free dive instructor, photographer and passionate about the water realm said “It is important to know how to freedive; especially if you live by the water it is safer if you feel confident while holding your breath under the water.” he explained. “Moreover, free dive offers an unparalleled freedom of exploration when you travel, as you just need to be close to the water to discover a whole new world!” Livio added. Meet Livio at Freedive Air, where he shares his passion for freedom and exploration under the water!

Located less than 5 min walk from Gili Air harbour, Free Dive Air is a centre and school created by freedivers for freedivers that offers courses from beginners to master training. The centre was opened in 2014 by a group of partners passionate about freediving, among which world champion Miguel Lozano, who gives yearly workshops and masterclasses to advanced students. Free Dive Air provides trainings by Apnea Total which is focused on students’ gradual progression and fun rather than performances. “We want happy students, we want to have fun, this is why we adapt the curriculum to the individual student. In this way we are
Gililife 68
able to offer a safe and personalised experience.” Livio said. “Indeed, everybody can freedive, we just need some professional’s advice and to learn some breathing exercises!” he added. Livio is one of the two instructors of the centre, which remains small in order to offer a relaxed family atmosphere. With a passion for underwater photography, Livio is the right person to talk to if you love marine life and you want to learn how to spend more time under the water at deeper depths and appreciate the beauty of the underwater world. Check his work at Livio Fakeye and start dreaming about your free dive experience in the Gili’s!
Livio, why are the Gili’s islands the ideal place where to freedive? Firstly, the Gili’s are small islands, surrounded by the sea and have direct access to a shallow reef (from 5 to 20 mt). Then, they offer easy sites, good for beginners and appealing to all freedivers. Last but not least, the Gili’s are often visited by interesting but shy marine creatures, which are more easily approachable if free diving. For instance, in November 2017 a group of mobula rays visited the Gili’s. Many scuba divers went to see them, but they could not go up and down easily. Us freedivers, we could swim with them!

GILI MATIKI YOUR ECO-FRIENDLY FAMILY IN THE MIDDLE OF GILI AIR GILI AIR Some people travel to explore, others to find themselves. There are travellers on the road who are trying to forget it all and are looking for peace and quiet, others who are seeking an answer to some of life’s questions and venture off to see if a different environment would be of inspiration. When Titoo took the road, it was to fulfill a childhood dream.“By the time I am 30 years old, I want to open my own business and be my own boss” she resolved when she was still at a young age. However, her dream was more than opening a business, it was to find a new place to call home and where fulfill a childhood dream. Passion and intuition led her travels around the world; the more she traveled, the more she understood how the ideal place she was looking
for should be, but no place matched her expectations. Until she arrived in the Gili islands, where she finally felt that was the place where she would start the business she had always dreamt of. Closeness to nature, local flavour and the slow pace of life were some of the aspects that made her fall in love with the islands and, pleased to encounter Gili’s friendly approach to tourism and multiple opportunities, she jumped off the boat and finally put down her suitcase. Gili Matiki soon became a dream come true! As a tribute to the people who made it happen, Titoo named the place with the first syllables of the names of her MAma, her sister KImiko and TItoo herself, and the logo a homage to Titoo’s husband’s Cedric’s tattoo. 71 Gililife

BAYAN – MASJID KUNO Built in the 16th century, the Bayan Mosque is the oldest mosque in Lombok. It has woven bamboo walls and is built on stone foundation. It is located around 80 km from Mataram and is part of a very interesting and meaningful religious site.
GERUPUK Gerupuk is a small fishermen's village known for its peaceful life and surfing spots. If you love to surf or are looking for a white empty beach just for you, Gerupuk Bay is the perfect destination!
NATURE & ADVENTURE
TREKKING - RINJANI Mount Rinjani soars to 3726m above sea level (2nd highest volcano in Indonesia). The ascent does not require highly technical skills but rather determination! Start from Senaru, North Lombok, a site also known for its magnificent waterfalls.
LOMBOK

KUTA Kuta is a small town famous for its surfing “beach break” and “reef break”. You can rent boards in several places and take lessons. Its beach is a beautiful and wide sandy cove surrounded by small hills. SELONG BLANAK Selong Blanak is a beautiful bay strewn with small shops. The main attraction is surfing, however swimming remains possible. The waves are perfect for beginners. You will easily find somewhere to rent a board for a few hours.

MORE LOMBOK
MAWUN Don’t miss Mawun beach under any circumstances! Located 20 minutes west of Kuta Lombok by scooter, the road there is beautiful and safe. You’ll travel alongside rice paddies and small traditional villages with typical "Sasak" houses.
SENGGIGI Senggigi is a bustling town on the West cost of Lombok littered with luxury hotels, restaurants, shops of all kinds, and a craft market. About ten kilometers on either side of the city there are beautiful beaches lined with coconut palms.
GILI GEDE Gili Gede is a tropical jewel. The lack of traffic and untouched nature are two of the main features of this island! The clear waters and abundant marine life guarantee fantastic snorkeling experience steps from your bungalow.
TANJUNG AAN The Tanjung Aan bay is huge with pristine, fine, white sand on one side, and on the other, a golden sandy beach with large grains. A central rock separates the two different beaches and you can climb it to admire the magnificent view! EKAS Renowned for its world-class surfbreaks and strong wind that blows all year round, this peninsula is the paradise for surfers and kite-surfers. Ekas also offers white beaches with pristine water on sandy bottoms!
MATARAM Mataram, the capital of Lombok has several sectors: Ampenan, the pear, Mataram, the administrative center, Cakra, the business center and Bertais-Sweta where the bus station is located. From the Gilis, take the monkey forest road and visit the Mall for a shopping session! BANYUMULEK The Sasak artisans of Lombok produce pottery for centuries and pass on their traditions from one generation to another. Visit one of the most important centers in Banyumulek where you will observe the manufacturing process and find a wide range of objects.
DESERT POINT Said to be "the best left in the world", Desert Point is an oasis for experienced surfers. Break is located near the village of Bangko-Bangko and produces powerful rollers that can be surfed up to 300m. The best season is from May to September. TETEBATU This small quaint town lies just south of Mount Rinjani National Park. Here you can experience real, traditional village life in Lombok, along with an array of cultural experiences and beautiful waterfalls.

GILI FRUIT
BANANA Bananas are one of the world’s most popular fruits. Originally from Southeast Asia, today bananas are available almost worldwide, and come in a variety of species, all belonging to the genius Musa. Although this genius is very diverse, all bananas have a curve, elongated shape, a hard rind and a soft flesh. According to the species, the size and colour change and the rind can be yellow, green, orange or even purple or brown. In some countries, a basic difference can be made between bananas and plantains; both are edible fruits, but the latter needs to be cooked before being consumed. However, in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia, all varieties of bananas are both eaten raw and cooked. Bananas grow in clusters on the banana tree, which is known for the beautiful edible purple flower that is also consumed in salads and curries. The leaves of the banana tree have multiple uses; in tropical countries they are traditionally used as roofing because of their waterproof properties and also used as plates or to cook or wrap food or as decoration. The fibre extracted from the leaves has also been extensively used in the textile industry and even to produce paper!
DID YOU KNOW A medium-sized banana contains 105 calories, 30 grams of carbs, 1 gram of protein and no fat nor cholesterol Bananas contain tryptophan, which is converted to serotonin and contributes to overcome depression A high-content of vitamin B6 supports the nervous system and the production of white-blood cells Eating bananas will help your digestion because they produce a digestive enzyme and are soothing to the digestive track Gililife 82
PISANG GORENG INGREDIENTS Medium-sized yellow bananas Frying oil (minyak goreng) FOR BATTER 150 gr all purpose flour 30 gr corn flour 200 gr baking soda 1 ½ tablespoons rice flour 1 tablespoonful sugar ¼ teaspoon salt 100 ml ice water
Pisang Goreng, or Banana Fritters, are undoubtedly the most favourite among all deep-fried (gorengan) Indonesian snacks. You can get them at street stalls, served for breakfast or with your teh panas (hot tea). Best to be eaten hot, when the inside is tender and juicy and the outside crunchy and just coming out of the pan. Try them topped with grated coconut or chocolate and indulge in Indonesian’s sweet flavours!
PREPARATION • Peel the bananas and slice them in half lengthways • Heat the cooking oil in a a wok on medium heat • Prepare a tray with paper towels • Combine batter ingredients in a mixing bowl, mix well until thick • Dip the bananas in the batter • When the oil is hot, deep-fry the bananas until golden brown on both sides • Remove the bananas from the wok and put on the tray with paper towels • Pat dry and dust with icing sugar, and served hot 83 Gililife
