Jersey is a special place at any time of year, most people think it comes into its own during the summer months but, for me, the cooler months are when you really get to discover what makes us tick.

The weather stays a little warmer than the mainland and if we get even the slightest sprinkling of snow the island grinds to a halt but worry not, even if it does you’ll still find some breathtaking coastal walks, many excellent pubs where you’ll be able to enjoy a pint or two by a fire and plenty of things to buy to take home for friends and family.

I’m biased of course but I hope that you’ll look out for the Genuine Jersey mark when making your choices, it’s the sign of local provenance and helps you to identify things which have been caught, reared, grown or made here. The association has more than 180 artisans and producers within it, many of whom will be selling their wares at our Christmas Markets in the Royal Square which take place every Thursday to Sunday from until 11 December. We’d love you to come down and soak up the festive atmosphere and meet and buy directly from the producers and you’ll also find the Cock and Bottle here, one of those great pubs I mentioned.

If you miss out on the markets, then keep your eyes peeled during your visit for the roadside stalls full of local produce, fish vans selling their local catch, Jersey Dairy’s milk and butter, butchers selling locally reared meat, or for the independent shops selling locally made crafts, The Trading Point in St. Lawrence is just one of many we’d recommend.

It’s easy to keep it local when you have such a rich bounty of produce surrounding you.

St. Helier

While the island holds appeal at every corner, you’ll no doubt spend some time in our capital, the mighty St. Helier. Liberation Square is the anchor-point at which most people find themselves when they begin exploring the island’s capital. There you’ll find the Liberation Statue and fountains. The bus station and Tourist Information Centre, are both a short walk away. Head down Conway Street and you’ll find yourself on King Street, the centre of St. Helier’s main shopping area. Where are you?

You’re on our beautiful little island in the English Channel but you’re a lot closer to France (around 14 miles at the closest point) than you are to England (closer to 100 miles). You’re surrounded by four other main Channel Islands; Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm and a handful of smaller inhabited and uninhabited islands. Our nearest coastal towns in France are Granville and the historic port of Saint-Malo. The term “Channel Islands” began to be used around 1830, possibly first by the Royal Navy as a collective name for the islands.

Vous êtes sur notre belle petite île de la Manche mais vous êtes beaucoup plus proche de la France (environ 22 km au plus près) que de l'Angleterre (plus près de 100 km). Money

Pounds Sterling is the legal tender but we also have our own banknotes and coins which are classed as accepted tender elsewhere in the UK, people can take it, but they don’t have to - so don’t forget to spend your last few pound notes on souvenirs before you leave. If you forget though, a pound note also makes a great souvenir. Also, if you hold one of our bank notes up to the light you’ll not see a British king or queen in the hologram but the image of one of our own royalty.

Our Population

Since the last census in 2011 it’s estimated that our population has grown to around 105,500. You’ll find most of us in and around St. Helier leaving most of the northern, easterly and westerly parishes unspoilt and rural in nature. Roughly 50% of Jersey dwellers on the last census were locally born with 31% from the UK, 7% from Portugal/Madeira, 3% from Poland, 2% from Ireland and the rest from elsewhere.

Arriving and leaving

If you arrive by air you’ll be one of a historical average of 1.6 million passengers per year to use Jersey Airport in the west of the island. Served by buses and taxis for onward travel right outside the arrivals hall, hire car services are also available inside the arrivals hall. Foreign exchange and postal services, including posting excess baggage are available in the departures hall.

If you’re wearing your sea legs, you’ll have arrived in St. Helier, Jersey’s capital. Like the airport, buses and taxis are available outside the arrivals hall although central St. Helier is only a short walk away. Driving

If you get lost, it’s worth bearing in mind that most locals won’t know where the A6 or B12 roads are, because all of our roads bear their own names in addition to these classifications. Your best bet? Point on a map or tell someone where you’re trying to get to! If you’re renting a car you’ll notice that the registration plate bears a white ‘H’ on a red background which denotes it as a hired vehicle. You’d best not flag down one of these for directions as they’re probably lost too. Like the United Kingdom, we drive on the left hand side of the road and all speed limits are posted in mph. The maximum permissable speed limit anywhere is 40mph, with a large number of 30mph and 20mph zones. In the rural parishes you may also notice signs denoting ‘Green Lanes’ where the maximum speed limit is 15mph and right of way is

As you approach one, priority is given to traffic on your right. After they’ve made their move it’s your turn and traffic on your left will yield to you. It’s a great way to keep traffic flowing and once you see it in action it’ll all make sense. The mini roundabout at the bottom of Beaumont Hill is a prime example. Don’t panic, you’ll be fine!

Parking

On street parking requires the use of either a yellow disc or Paycard (available from convenience stores and hire car pick up points) to be displayed inside the car as signposted. PayByPhone parking is a cashless parking service that allows you to pay for parking using your mobile phone. It is available in all paying public car parks.

Multi-storey car parks also require Paycards with the exception of the Sand Street and underground Waterfront car parks which have ticket machines that accept both cash and cards as payment.

Buses

Buses operate throughout the island to and from Liberation Station in St. Helier. Listed beaches, landmarks and attractions have the route number in their listing. All buses are low floor, so they are all fully accessible for wheelchair users, pushchairs, prams and some smaller mobility scooters (with a permit). Low-floor buses also help those who have other mobility requirements. All our buses have easy-access ramps and a dedicated wheelchair space.

Des bus circulent dans toute l'île depuis et vers la gare de Libération à St Helier. Les plages, monuments et attractions répertoriés ont le numéro d'itinéraire dans leur liste. Taxis / Car hire

There are taxi ranks at the airport, harbour and around St. Helier. Different tariffs apply depending on time of day and day of the week. Payment in cash used to be preferred, but all taxis are now required to accept cards. Private hire cabs are also available to hire if you’re not near a taxi rank. Evie electric cars can be unlocked and hired with the Evie app.

Get to the beach!

Beachability is a charity providing specially designed manual, ballooned wheel chairs for use on the beach and other rough terrain. Beachability chairs are available for anyone that needs help with their mobility at no cost and can be booked out for up to three hours. Users should be able to transfer onto the chair and should be accompanied by a helper. A hoist is also available for those who are not able to transfer.

Rendez-vous à la plage ! In the winter, Jersey comes into its own with wild weather and exhilarating beach walks to wrap up and enjoy. The island’s west coast is exposed to the full force of the Atlantic weather systems and makes the perfect spot to watch the wind and waves roll in with all their dramatic winter beauty. Just make sure you stay well away from the water’s edge - and at a safe distance.

I nearly always start my Saturday with a coffee from Locke’s on Pitt Street and grab a bite to eat for lunch from the market. As a result Friday nights are nearly always a chilled one at home with the family and dog (though increasingly, with teenagers, there are some taxi related errands too!). I have learned the hard way that a big Friday night always makes for a very long Saturday, though occasionally I test it out just to check, and have been known to pop to Upstairs at Anley for a Friday cocktail which has led to several, and a dusty Saturday morning.

Saturday nights are for… seeing friends. Whether it’s dinner out or at ours (or theirs!), Saturday nights are definitely for friends. We’re so lucky in Jersey to have an amazing array of restaurants on our doorstep, as well as great places to have a drink. Awabi is a firm favourite in town, with amazing Asian food and drink (have the chicken wings!). The Moorings in Gorey is a lovely cosy restaurant, and (just about!) walking home distance.

On a Sunday it’s definitely a slow start. Well, as slow as it can be with our dog, Finn, who knows no boundaries and has no concept of a lie-in. He knows Sunday is a big family walk, and inevitably some treats for him on a beach. Depending on the Saturday night before, will depend on breakfast. If it’s been one involving a little too much wine, we always head down to Long Beach in Gorey and to Rhona’s for a curative bacon, egg and sausage (on Portuguese roll) with a coffee, whilst Finn lives his best lift chasing balls up and down the beach. During the summer months, we’ll often get in for a dip as well, but I’m not ashamed to admit that I fall into the ‘fair weather’ sea-swimming camp and am rarely persuaded in during the winter.

St. Catherine’s Wood is also a firm favourite for a muddy Sunday walk, with options to add on extra distance and pop down to the Breakwater Café for a hot chocolate or ice-cream depending on the time of year. Also one of the best spots to forage for blackberries (but don’t tell everyone!).

Sunday afternoons are usually spent catching up on homework and cooking a roast dinner. With all the honesty boxes dotted around the island, it’s always really easy to pick up local, seasonal veg and we often grab some from the end of our road.

When family and friends are staying, we stretch our legs a little more, and make a little more effort to get out and about. A favourite walk is from Grève de Lecq, up along the cliff paths to the Devil’s Hole (grabbing a bite at the Priory Inn or La Mare Wine Estate) before heading back along the lanes to the beach. When we have friends with young children staying, we nearly always head out on the SUPs at Archirondel or Green Island, or to Bouley Bay for a dip and jumping in from the steps. The more sheltered bays are perfect for getting up the confidence of younger swimmers and the steps make for easy (if not bracing) access into deep water.

My favourite beach is… well it’s more of an are. It’s impossible to choose one! For a summer dip after work, Belval, just around the corner from St. Catherine’s is my absolutely favourite. At high tide it’s just lovely, and last Boxing Day we sat on the beach with mugs of tea post dip watching a seal bobbing around. Portelet and Plemont are worth the steps and the effort. Unspoilt, idyllic, and with excellent food options at both, I love setting up for a few hours at one of them in the summer and seeing in the sunset over dinner out west is never a bad idea. In the summer my girls love to surf, and sitting outside the Watersplash with a shandy in the sunshine makes everything seem right. Especially with the curly fries. There really is a beach for everyone here though, and they never, ever feel crowded.

The GST Refund Scheme

Would you like to save even more on your jewellery and watch purchases while you’re in Jersey? Jeff Chinn from Hettich Jewellers explains how the GST Visitor Refund Scheme could benefit your visit, with a refund of Jersey’s 5% Goods and Services Tax in addition to Jersey’s VATfree prices.

If you want to take advantage of the GST refund scheme, which is available to visitors leaving the island by scheduled flights or ferries, and spending a total of £300 or more, then ensure you are buying from a participating retailer.

It's not compulsory for retailers to opt in, so ask before you buy. Once purchasing from a participating retailer, the process is simple. Fill out a simple form in store, have it stamped at the airport or ferry port when you leave, and send the form back to the retailer for a refund, less a small administration fee.

THE PROCESS

YOU MUST GIVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO THE RETAILER:

Once you are back in your country of residence, and within two months of your departure date from Jersey, you should return the retailer's copy of the stamped form to the retailer.

After receiving your form, the retailer must process your refund within three months of your departure date.

The retailer may charge an administration fee to process your form, but they should tell you this when you buy your goods.

St. Helier is our epicentre of retail, with everything from department stores to quirky independents. However, If you fancy a drive around the island, there are also a few destinations to consider along your route for some retail therapy.

1. The Trading Point

Located at Carrefour Selous in the centre of the island, this is a creative hub for local small businesses to sell their crafts. From homeware to handmade ceramics, they have got it all.

2. Garden (&more) Centres

We have several great garden centres that offer a great deal more than items for the garden. St Peter’s And Le Quesne’s all feature expansive giftware areas whilst Ransoms in the east extends even further into furniture and homeware. You could also try The Hidden Garden. Unlike the UK, our garden centres aren’t open on Sundays unfortunately, although some do open in December for Christmas shopping.

3. The Harbour Gallery

A characterful art space tucked away off the bulwalk in St Aubin’s Village until December. It will be moving to a new location in St Helier for February 2023 (closed for relocation in January).This charity-based space promotes local artists’ work and Genuine Jersey products. St. Peter’s Windmill, home to award winning jewellery designer Catherine Best, was the last surviving working tower mill in Jersey.

This beautiful historic landmark dates back to 1837 and is built from Jersey granite. The weighbridge and millers office where grain used to be delivered to the windmill for milling also survived and has become a handy site for buses to stop. The Windmill is part of a complex that includes a jewellery manufacturing workshop, the Catherine Best jewellery showroom.

Channel Islands Military Museum

LIBERATION ROUTE EUROPE

The LRE Foundation, Visit Jersey and Jersey Heritage are excited to announce a new addition to Liberation Route Europe, the Forced Workers Trail, located on the island of Jersey. The trail introduces visitors to 20 locations linked to the experiences of forced foreign labourers to the island during the Second World War.

The Channel Islands (that includes Guernsey and Jersey) were the only region of the British Isles to be occupied by German Forces during the Second World War. The island’s occupation lasted for five years, from 1 July 1940 until its Liberation on 9 May 1945. Starting in the autumn of 1941, German occupational forces brought 6000 foreign workers, both men and women, to the island to work as forced labour on the construction of concrete German fortifications, part of the larger Atlantic Wall. These actions took place under the Organisation Todt (OT), the civil and military engineering

organisation responsible for engineering projects in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II.

Whilst these workers originated from many different countries, their treatment varied. Labourers from Western Europe and North Africa were conscripted as paid labourers. While Eastern Europeans, such as Vasily Marempolsky, were used as slave labour and were often treated with brutality. In some cases, the islanders, such as Lucy Schwob and Suzanne Malherbe, put their lives and livelihoods in great peril to shelter escaped labourers.

Together, Jersey Heritage, Visit Jersey, and the LRE Foundation have worked to create a new thematic route, the ‘Forced Workers Trail in Jersey’, as part of the Liberation Route Europe to connect the historic locations across the island and tell these moving personal stories. This project will promote the preservation and appreciation of Jersey’s heritage, making it accessible to visitors to the area and ensuring that the island’s story is passed on for many generations to come.

Built in the 1540s St. Aubin’s Fort stands behind the beautiful harbour as protection to the bay during the war. You can explore the fort by walking across the beach at low tide, but be sure to check when the tide is due to turn as you won’t want to get stuck.

Howard Davis Park

This beautiful church and graveyard date back to Norman times and the adjacent Fisherman’s Chapel is thought to have been built in the 12th Century with 14th and 15th century murals. It’s worth a visit for its views across St. Brelade’s Bay alone.

Walking.

Walking is a great way to explore the outdoors allowing us to wander through Jersey’s spectacular landscapes, enjoying this Aspiring Geopark’s natural and built heritage.

Cycling.

Explore the Aspiring Jersey Geopark on two wheels, with a network of 15 mph ‘Green Lanes’ through the island’s countryside and miles of bicyclefriendly routes, a cycle ride is the perfect way to explore our unique island. Enjoy taking in the sights from the slow lane or challenge yourself with an uphill climb. We may be small, but we pack many diverse, beautiful and challenging cycle routes into our nine miles by five. You’ll be spoilt for choice for bike hire in Jersey, you’ll find mountain, leisure and road bikes and e-bikes if you’re looking for a little assistance.

Diving and Snorkelling.

The sun has warmed the sea all summer long, making autumn the perfect time to dive in! It’s a special time of year when the air and water temperature meet, existing at the same temperature, making getting in and out of the water a slightly lesser feat. Jersey’s shallow marine habitats offer an opportunity to explore the beauty and diversity that lies beneath the waves through the creation of a snorkel trail. Portelet Bay boasts an element of isolation from the island, forming its own little oasis. A small islet located in the middle of the bay, Janvrin’s Tomb (or Île au Guerdain), is surrounded by water at high tide. At low tide, the islet becomes accessible via a soft sand bar.

Favourite of Jersey’s marine life: Tope. “Tope is a species of shark found in our waters. They are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species as they are being unsustainably fished in other parts of the world.” Tope can be found at Les Minquiers, one of our offshore reefs, which boasts hundreds of granite fangs, wildlife, geology and archaeology.

Our beaches aren’t just for summer. Even on a brisk winter morning, our beautiful beaches are the perfect place to breathe in the fresh sea air. They each have their own unique personality. Over the following pages we highlight beaches and places you might want to stop for a coffee or snack! It might be worth calling ahead to check opening times in winter months, as some close on certain days.

Anne Port NE

A quiet and rarely crowded east-facing stretch of sand that catches the morning and midday sun. 2

Bouley Bay N

A winding hill leads down to this steep pebble beach with deep water for competent swimmers. The bay is home to one of Jersey’s scuba-diving schools. 4

Archirondel NE

This popular beach with an excellent beach cafe is pebbly at first but sandy at low tide when the water stays shallow for some way out. East-facing, Archirondel loses the sun in the late afternoon. 2

Green Island SE

A locals’ favourite, this sheltered south-facing beach is a real sun trap where soft sand, rock climbing and rock pool adventures await. The tide goes out a long way, so take care with the swift incoming tide and pick times close to high water to enjoy swimming or paddling. 1

de Lecq

The most popular of the north coast beaches, Grève de Lecq’s sheltered sands and rockpools are ideal for families but lose the sun in the late afternoon. Don’t miss the excellent cafés and local pubs close by. Even in the winter months, some providers over coasteering trips for guided cold-water dips! 9

A tiny fishing harbour with space to play on the sand, picnic or catch some sun, but more of a wild swim that some other beaches. Worth visiting for the excellent beach café. 4

Grouville Bay / La Rocque Harbour SE

A real suntrap on the south coast, once you’ve wandered down the steep path from the car park and crossed the pebbles, you’ll reach a sheltered south-facing beach with golden sand and shallow turquoise water, ideal for swimming. 12a, 14 to St. Brelade’s Bay, then walk along the cliffs

A long stretch of sand that leads to Gorey harbour, with Mont Orgueil Castle as a backdrop. Plenty of parking, beach cafes and kiosks as well as a children’s beachside playground and soft sand make Long Beach a local favourite. 1a, 2

This south west facing beach is the wilder contrast to the adjoining St. Brelade’s Bay. The beaches are connected at low tide, or cross the pine-rich headland and walk along the sea wall next to the protected Ouaisné Common towards locals’ favourite, The Smugglers Inn. 12a

Rozel Bay NE

A small fishing village lined with beach huts and harbourside cottages, Rozel is more of a fishing harbour than a place to swim. But at low tide, Rozel’s small stretch of white sand is safe for children to play , just look out for the Rozel geese! 3

Havre des Pas S

Close to the centre of St. Helier, this sandy beach is worth a visit to see the architecture of the art deco pool, filled by the tide each day. The beach is easy to access, and safe for swimmers. 1

St. Aubin’s Bay SW

A crescent of south-facing sand from St. Helier to St. Aubin, the beach is in full sun for most of the day. With several beach cafes along the promenade front, look out for the softest sand around the Gunsite Café with jet ski hire close by. 12a, 14, 15

St. Brelade’s Bay SW

The beautiful beach at St. Brelade’s Bay is one of the island’s busiest; a visitor favourite for its soft sand, safe swimming, beach activities and seaside eating. Voted as number three in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards, this stunning south-facing beach is in the sun for most of the day. 12a, 14

Plémont NW

A pristine sandy cove reachable by a long flight of steps, where the intrepid are rewarded with a stunning natural playground of rock pools and sea caves. There’s safe swimming when the sea is calm, and surfing when it’s wild. The beach is completely covered at high tide. It’s quite a walk down from the bus stop so pack sensible footwear! 8

Portelet Bay SW

Climb down the long flight of steps and you’ll be rewarded with a sunny, sheltered and sandy beach circling Janvrin’s Tomb at the centre. Portelet Bay Beach Café serves excellent pizza throughout the season, and the pub at the top of the steps, the Old Portelet Inn is a family favourite. 12a

St. Ouen’s Bay W

A magnificent beach and natural playground for surfers and adrenaline seekers. It’s where one of the oldest surfing clubs in Europe has its home and makes a stunning setting for beach walks. Swimmers should take care in the strong currents and stick to the flagged zones. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the season. 22

COASTAL WALKS FROM DUSK, ‘TIL DAWN

What better way to reconnect with family and friends, than to walk along Jersey’s unspoilt coastline and watch the sun sink into the sea or catch first light? Here’s our guide to five walks to discover Jersey from dusk until dawn.

Grantez

Explore Jersey’s ancient history as you walk amongst the megalithic Dolmen de Monts of Grantez, in Jersey’s north west. From its high vantage point, explore the maritime grass heathland and the wealth of wildlife that live on the site, and watch the sun set across St. Ouen’s Bay. Listen out for the kestrels calling goodnight. Don’t miss the annual sunset concerts held on the fourth weekend of June. Picnickers and revelers dance to the harmonic sounds of local bands performing in the beautiful natural amphitheatre of Grantez.

La Saline

Nestled in the north of St. Ouen’s Bay, you’ll discover one of Jersey’s hidden gems - La Saline. Walk the breadth of the five mile beach feeling the sand beneath your feet and settle down for an evening BBQ. Watch surfers catch the last waves of the day before the sun disappears into

the Atlantic Ocean. Set yourself up for the evening with a BBQ and a bottle of wine. Make like a local and head down to Faulkner Fisheries only a short distance off at L’Etacq. Take your pick from the latest catch and keep it simple with a baguette and some delicious Jersey butter. Just remember a blanket to snuggle under!

La Corbière

Spend a day exploring Jersey’s southern coastline and the charm of harbourside St. Aubin before heading up the gentle incline of the Railway Walk to La Corbière Lighthouse. Discover Jersey’s past and the remains of the railway’s trackbed last used during the Occupation with its bridges, embankments and cuttings. As you reach the peak of the island’s extreme south-western point, relax and enjoy a well-deserved sundowner at Corbière Phare. Watch the waves encircle the lighthouse tower, as the tide rises, and enjoy panoramic views across St. Ouen’s Bay.

Seymour Tower

As night descends, star like shapes of luminous green twinkle and sparkle in a few special coastal spots at low tide, illuminating the seabed at your feet. In the night sky, stars twinkle above you as you wander away from the shore line to the sea line towards Seymour Tower. As you walk to return to shore, and the tide turns to circle the coast, the sea will submerge Jersey’s coastal landscapes and wash away your footprints. Fliquet

For those early birds, there’s nothing more revitalising than seeing a Jersey sunrise. Located in the eastern corner of Jersey’s coastline, enjoy panoramic views from Fliquet Bay just north of St. Catherine’s Breakwater. A tranquil and picturesque bay where, on a clear day, it is possible to

see France. For those up for a taste of adventure, with the sea on your doorstep, stay overnight at the nearby Archirondel Tower which provides a perfect base from which to explore the island's eastern side. Just don’t forget your flask of tea for your early morning cuppa!

Sea swimming seems to have increased in popularity over the last few years. Maybe it was the limitation of covid lockdown fitness options, a collective desire to be more ‘Wim Hof’ or just the love of hanging with friends in Dryrobes drinking hot chocolate while your body thaws back to normality after a bracing dip.

In Jersey you’re never more than ten minutes from the sea so you’ll always see people in the water, regardless of season. If you don’t fancy the adrenalin

rushes of surfing, kiting or foiling, grab a group of friends and venture into the step by step and visit our beaches for a spot of cold water swimming.

Sea swimming boosts your immune system, promotes a natural ‘high’, improves circulation, burns calories and reduces stress. It can also help improve anxiety, dementia and depression. As a social activity, it galvanises a comradery amongst those that brave the water, particularly over the winter months.

It may be winter, but it’s always swimming season.

If you fancy joining the throngs of groups like the ‘Cheeky Dippers’ or ‘Blue Tits’, make sure you do your research, take it easy and try one of these beaches;

1. St. Ouen’s Bay.

The biggest beach and the biggest waves. Take it easy and be careful of the tide. Be aware of rip tides if you’re swimming behind the break.

2. Grève de Lecq

A characterful and cosy bay on the north coast for gentle with swim a dramatic backdrop of coastal cliffs.

3. Archirondel

In the shadow of a traditional Martello tower, this sheltered cove is a secluded space with the benefit of a café close by to warm the cockles of one’s heart.

A lesser-known bay for quiet dips out west with a gentle sloping descent into the water.

5. Havre de Pas Bathing Pool

A great sea pool with steps into the water and guaranteed easy swimming, regardless of tide. Quick access from town hotels.

6. Bouley Bay

The home of scuba diving in Jersey makes for a great swim.

1. Be prepared. Check the winds and tidal situation.

2. Know your limits. Understand where safe waters / currents are.

3. Be prepared. Lots of dry clothing to put on afterwards.

4. Stay safe. Use a high-vis tow float, swim in groups or with a buddy.

5. Go easy. Beginners - don’t stay in too long!

Jersey excels at providing experiences on and around our coastal playground. Whilst the winter months restrict some actiivites, others are improved as wind blows kites and tides bring waves. Join a group of surfers, blokarters or SCUBA divers or simply climb the rocks or run the trails, taking in the distant views of France. Wet weather activities FOR THE FAMILY

If you’re visiting Jersey with the family you’ll be spoilt for choice with activities from all the activity providers mentioned over the previous few pages but there are also a few extra activities that your kids will particularly enjoy (and you too!). Many venues also organise events over half term but we don’t have full details at time of press. Be sure to give the attractions a call if you’re visiting them and ask!

Jump in some puddles

If the weather is wet, but you like to make a splash, head for the woods. Our favourite is St. Catherine’s Woods, a winding route that takes you along a great sheltered pathway next to the water. Pick a good stick, slide down a bank and, if you’re lucky, someone will have installed the rope swing for some extra ‘wheeeee’.

Hide in a castle!

Our castles are fun for all and kids of all ages will love playing knights and princesses. If you head to Mont Orgueil Castle, your little ones can get fully immersed and style themselves as royalty of old with the help of the free dressing-up room. There’s also a little play park within the battlements.

aMaizin! Adventure Park

Fun for all, indoor and outdoor

Once based around a huge maze of maize, this venue has now expanded into a full-blown children’s fun park, complete with petting zoo. There’s a sizable indoor play area too (with a café) where your little ones can run wild with the comfort of some great padding.

Tire out those energetic legs!

Jump Jersey is an indoor trampoline park based at Les Ormes, Jersey’s holiday village. SELF-GUIDED WALK: THE NORTH COAST

It’s easy to set out on your own and explore the island on foot. Once you’re on the trail, you can use our green lanes to ramble through fields or find hidden bays and secret coves. You’re never far from a public bus or friendly local to point you in the right direction. Rest up over a hearty pint of Liberation Jersey Ale and tuck into delicious Jersey seafood before venturing out once more with a spring in your step.

Choose a challenging Jersey walk and take on the north coast cliff paths, it can be completed in either direction, it’s your choice. Take in the stunning views from the north coast as well as the inland country lanes that zig zag their way through the heart of the island. There are plenty of places to stop along the way and take a well-earned rest.

Explore the north coast cliff paths and feel revitalised by the salty fresh air along the coast. This challenging walk can be completed in both directions but promises to host stunning views both coastal and country. Make sure you keep hydrated at one of the many places along the way for some refuelling.

When the sun sinks low, grab a front row seat at El Tico Beach Cantina, one of Jersey’s best surf spots, to unwind with a beer as the light breaks over the ocean. Snuggle under a blanket with a piping Thai jungle curry or just chill as the surfers catch the last waves at the Watersplash as you suck a bottle of Jersey’s newest craft beer, Stinky Bay IPA.

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of St. Helier and explore Grève de Lecq, where you’ll find Le Moulin De Lecq at the foothills of the woods. JB’s boasts over 100 craft beers, a smokehouse BBQ and ping pong tables where you can settle almost any pub debate. Ask locals about a lively bar for a night out and they will tell you Blue Note, an intimate bar where you can get up close and personal with the live Jazz and Blues entertainment nearly every night of the week. The beer’s not half bad either.

The twinkling harbour in St. Aubin has a store of lively pubs and restaurants, and just a 20 minute bus ride to or from St. Helier, it’s a great place to start your night out. Distillery experience.

From April 2023 La Mare Wine Estate offer Tours and Tasting Experiences, for experts and novices alike, through the vineyards, orchards and behind the scenes.

The tours begin with a gentle stroll through the vines and apple orchard followed by a visit to the new winery where the wine making process is demonstrated by a team of in-house experts. Then a visit to the stunning Cognac style distillery followed by a tasting of La Mare’s Jersey Wines and Jersey Apple Brandy Cream Liqueur. Weather permitting; they likes to host the tastings outside on the main lawn, near the house. You can also experience their food production kitchens where La Mare makes their genuine Jersey fudge, biscuits and preserves, including the famous Jersey Black butter. Guests will also meet their Chocolatier and see the Chocolate kitchen!

If you fancy a ride around the island at a leisurely pace, there are several providers that will hire you an electric bike. Alternatively, you can use our EVie bikes; just download the EVie app, reserve your bike then pick it up from various locations around the island, including centrally in St. Helier, just opposite the Liberation Bus Station.

Hit the road heading west in search of La Corbière Lighthouse. On your way you’ll pass Elizabeth Castle, you can’t miss it, it’s the one out at sea – quite the architectural feat! You can’t cycle across the causeway, but if you did want to visit, you can park your bike up and pop into the castle kiosk to find out how. Alternatively enjoy the spectacular castle view as you cycle along the promenade that’ll lead you all the way into St. Aubin’s Village.

Once you’ve arrived in St. Aubin’s Village, you’ll discover lots of eateries, some shops, a gallery, and a raft of resident ducks. Stay a while and soak up the bustling harbour vibe – or continue on your way and join the cycle path, an old railway track, which is your one stop path all the way to the lighthouse.

4. Plémont Bay waterfall

Descend onto this north coast beach at low water and you’ll discover not only a truly beautiful golden sandy bay, but also ‘THE’ waterfall located in a naturally formed saltwater cave! It’s mesmerising watching the freshwater trickle down the smooth stones, washed twice daily by the incoming tide. It’s quite the climb back up, but you can choose to reward yourself in the café at the top, which is open for most of the year.

1. La Corbière Lighthouse

This nautical feat at the south westerly point of Jersey has been guarding this treacherous stretch of coast for centuries. The name means ‘a place where crows gather’, quite fitting really, as this is definitely a place where people come to gather, to watch the rise and fall of the tide, and enjoy a low water walk out to the base of the lighthouse. Park up and enjoy spending some time exploring here, or breeze pass and watch the towering white lighthouse disappear as you continue along the coastline.

2. Pit stop at La Corbière Phare

Prop up your EVie bike along side the other bikes, that are frequently seen at this popular refuelling station. For a total sugar rush, turbo charged, opt for the Hot Chocolate with whipped cream.

3. Grosnez

Cycling from one side of St. Ouen’s Bay to the other you’ll leave behind the nautical landmark of La Corbière and climb the steep hill of L’Etacq to beautiful views across St. Ouen’s Bay and the green lane that’ll lead you to Grosnez Castle. A spectacular ruin with enviable 360-degree views.

5. Faulkner Fisheries

A bunker that functions as a vivier. Before you finish your day, why not drop back down into St. Ouen’s Bay to pick up some fresh seafood to cook up at dinner. This striking whitewashed building situated on the most north westerly point of St. Ouen’s Bay operates as a fishery, housing the catch of the day from the many local fisherman that supply the family run business. In the summer months, there’s a chance you’ll smell it before you see it, as you cycle towards the scent of garlic drenched seafood sizzling on the BBQ, open to the public in the warmer months of the year. Any other time of year you can buy seafood here and prep your very own seafood banquet – fill your basket up with your very own local catch up the day!

On an island that is only nine miles by five, it always astounds me just how many incredible dining options we have, whatever the time of day. Here are just a handful of places to see you through breakfast, lunch and dinner during your visit this season.

BREAKFAST

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day but also my favourite. Which means that I feel pretty confident I know of some of the best spots for breakfast, or brunching, on our little isle. Starting in St. Helier, there’s been quite the explosion of excellent brunch spots of late, Locke’s being just one of them. Here you’ll find excellent coffee and a small but mighty menu with dishes inspired by, and changing with, the seasons. They’re also quite the purveyor of excellently titled dishes too, Avo Good Day and the Notorious BLT being just two of their permanent fixtures.

Dandy have not one but two locations serving AllPress coffee and delectable food. Their chef bakes a plethora of tasty treats every day, including his own sourdough which you can have topped with almost

anything. Be sure to grab a slab of their banana bread (toasted and buttered!) or a brownie and if you head to their Colomberie location on a Saturday ask for the Dirty Eggs, you won’t be disappointed! The only downside to the townie locations is they don’t open on Sundays, but this gives you the perfect excuse to hunt for a table with a view. Why not head over to Grève de Lecq, here you’ll find a multitude of places where you can enjoy food for most of the day, but my favourite has to be Colleen’s Café for their full English, delightful. It wouldn’t be a trip to the island without a visit to the Hungry Man in Rozel Bay, this brightly coloured beach hut is the perfect spot for an al fresco bacon butty or if you’re brave try the Double Decker Healthwrecker.

LUNCH

If you’re heading to St. Ouen’s Bay then a drive along the Five Mile Road offers up three options; Le Braye, El Tico or Sands all have excellent views of the bay and great menus full of foodie delights. They serve food throughout the day too so why stop at just lunch! Nude Food Beach has an excellent menu of wholesome food and fantastic views of St. Aubin’s Bay, open for breakfast and lunch daily and dinner too Wednesday - Saturday. One more westie must-visit is Off the Rails on the cycle track to La Corbière, serving Wednesday to Sunday with an excellent tapas and pizza menu with a strong wine list.

DINNER

Your choices for dinner are almost endless. Head out east to Gorey where amongst the countless dining options you’ll find Sumas and their all-weather balcony which offers you sweeping vistas of the castle and superb food. St. Aubin has an abundance of restaurants too, many of them along the Bulwarks overlooking the boats in the harbour. The Anchor Club offers up slightly more formal dining and the Seafish Café, where you can enjoy excellent fish and chips right beside the water.

St. Helier is home to several fantastic fine dining restaurants. Try Samphire, where you’ll find a menu full of island influences and the best Côte de Beouf you’re likely to try, ever (in my opinion). Or head to Bohemia where I dare you to choose their sixcourse Michelin-starred surprise dinner menu, which changes daily and is available Monday to Thursday, it promises to tantalise your taste buds and delight your senses.

Another favourite has to be No. 10 Restaurant, squirreled away on Bond Street which has a menu that is full of local ingredients and dishes that are influenced by the chef’s travels. The restaurant’s chef was a finalist on The Great British Menu. All three of these town-based restaurants also have excellent bars should you wish to have an aperitif before you dine.

Our unique European flavour

Jersey’s community has been strengthened by the diversity of people that have moved to Jersey to work and settled long-term. It’s not unusual to get a cab from the airport driven by a Scot or Mancunian who came in the 80’s and never made it back to the North, but once you’re wandering the streets of St. Helier you’ll notice other flavours of influence.

You will you witness Portuguese flags in many areas and it’s not unusual in certain areas

to chance upon a café or restaurant where Portuguese is the predominant language in the air. The Jersey Portuguese community has developed over three generations on-island and continues to bring a unique atmosphere to certain corners of the island.

In recent years, Jersey nightlife has changed, from the preeminent larger venues that characterised pre-lockdown ‘big’ nights out to a wider selection of more intimate venues that fill fast and pour more slowly. These speak-easy inspired bars provide a perfect, characterful evening if you’re looking for something a bit more than a pub crawl.

The Weighbridge is a good place to start. The dominant Royal Yacht Hotel has a variety of different drinking options available, whether it be outside sipping wine in their large al fresco area, squirrelled away in the Cabin bar (the last remaining part of the original historic building) or dancing the night away in their ‘Drift’ bar, there is something for everyone. Just over the road, The Square offers excellent food options and you can also drink there until 01:00. Across the cobbles of the Weighbridge, Ce Soir offers cocktails, table service and an in-house DJ with a more club-style atmosphere and upstairs gin bar. In the summer their alfresco area is good for people watching. Just up the road from the Weighbridge square on Hill Street is the expansive Chambers, which underwent a muli-million pound refurb in 2019 and offers live music; a fusion of pub culture and bar atmosphere.

If you fancy your nightlife a little more intimate. Tucked away behind Chambers is The Blind Pig, hidden down a back alley just around the corner (you can also get there through a little hidden door at the back of Chambers itself). One of our original speak-easy bars, it specialises in cocktails in a small but beautifully appointed room. Just a few turns away on Wharf Street, this year sees the addition of The Porter’s Store, which channels a 70s Americana vibe into its cocktail den.

Just one more right turn, on Broad Street, you’ll find Vinifera, worth investigating for an early evening glass of wine from one of the island’s most experienced owner-sommeliers. They also offer a private table in the basement, bookable for groups to take wine with delicious food.

If it’s wine time, you should carry on across town where you’ll find the newly opened The Watchmaker, a chic ‘wine, Champagne and charcutie’ bar. A stone’s throw away down a cobbled backalley is the clandestine Project 52, Once you’ve found the location you need to look for the buzzer and ring for entry. Open 17:00 - 23:00 from Wednesday to Saturday you can expect excellently blended cocktails, craft beers and a superb selection of gins and a nifty wine list too for a cosy affair of an evening.

If you’re looking for some pre-dinner drinks, the roof terrace at The Don is a sophisticated beauty above one of Jersey’s quality restaurants, Samphire. The roof garden provides the perfect oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the high street, where guests can sit and enjoy a drink when the weather is fine and enjoy wine by the glass, or one of their excellent seasonally changing cocktails. If you like the vibe of a premium hotel bar then don’t miss the cool calm of the Bohemia Bar and Roof Terrace at The Club Hotel and Spa on Green Street. The timeless elegance of the bar is matched by a cool calm, great drinks and the chance to be on-hand for dinner at our fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant.

A little more local knowledge...

History

The earliest evidence of human activity in Jersey dates to about 250,000 years ago and it was only 6,000 years ago that Jersey was part of mainland Europe before rising tides cut us off and made us an island.

During the American Wars of Independence, two attempted invasions of the island were made. In 1779, the Prince of Orange William V was prevented from landing at St. Ouen’s Bay and on 06 January 1781 a force led by Baron de Rullecourt captured St. Helier in a daring dawn raid, but was defeated by a British

army led by Major Francis Peirson in the Battle of Jersey. Jersey was the fourth-largest ship building area in the 19th-century British Isles, building over 900 vessels around the island.

Jersey was occupied by Nazi German troops between 1940 and 1945, with the Channel Islands being the only British soil occupied during World War II. This period of occupation saw about 8,000 islanders evacuated, 1,200 islanders deported to camps in Germany, and over 300 islanders sentenced to the prisons and concentration camps of mainland Europe. Many islanders remained and

the island was liberated by British troops on 09 May 1945, now celebrated as a public holiday locally.

People

Mostly a mix of Norman French and British settlers, Jersey’s community has also been enriched by the influences of the number of Europeans who also call Jersey their home. If you hear anybody referring to a Crapaud (French for toad) or a Jersey Bean they’ll be talking about one of the natives.

Language

The native language, which you’ll see displayed in a few locations around the island such as the airport and harbour is called Jèrriais but you’ll probably not hear it spoken unless you find yourself in the deepest, darkest of rural parishes such as St. Ouen, where 8% of parishioners speak it according to the results of a 2012 survey. English is the most widely spoken language.

Jersey and its neighbours

Jersey has an interesting relationship with both the UK and Europe in that it’s a Crown Dependency, meaning that despite having our own independent government, locals answer to the King and the British military support our interests should the need arise. Despite being part of the British Isles, Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom. We’re also not part of the European Union but are a member of the EEC. Confused? You’ll fit right in!

Honorary Police

In addition to the States of Jersey Police force, who serve islandwide, each of Jersey’s twelve parishes has its own police service that only have jurisdiction within the boundaries of their own

parish, also known as the Honorary Police, who are headquartered at each of the parish halls.

Economy

The local economy thrives from a combination of offshore finance, tourism, digital and agriculture. Bathe at our beaches, enjoy our local attractions, dine on our fresh produce including world famous potatoes and dairy products from the herds of local Jersey cows.

Tides

Jersey’s tidal range is one of the largest in the world with a range of around 12 metres. We’ve also got some of the cleanest water in the British Isles, which is a winning combination when it comes to keeping our beaches great. It’s worth noting that because of the huge tidal range that the sea level does rise quickly and it’s easy to get caught out. Be mindful that if you stray too far from the shore there could be a risk of tides cutting you off and leaving you stranded. Pay close attention to the signs and know the dangers.

Decoding the dialect

A local advises...

Whilst English is the most widely spoken language here in Jersey, if you find yourself interacting with some of the purest of locals you might notice a distinctive intonation that’s likely a remnant of our Norman roots despite sounding closer to a South African twang.

They’re hard to find these days but they’re definitely out there, mostly hidden away in the rural parishes. I should know, I’m descended from them and occasionally find myself pronouncing an ‘arn’ sound as ‘on’ in a way that’d likely disgust the King. The example sentence above sums this up

relatively succinctly. If you find yourself talking to somebody who pronounces words like this there’s a good chance they’ll be able to give you reliable directions. Just make sure you’re pronouncing the place names properly. To give you a head start we’ve listed a few on the page to the right.

ORIENTATION

If you’re in St. Helier, it feels like you’re in the middle of the island. In fact, you’re a little bit to the east. Considering you’re on an island nine miles by five, you’re not too far from anywhere though! Whether you choose to head to the southern fishing villages; St. Aubin in the west or Gorey/Rozel in the east, the western beaches or the northern cliffs, the island is as diverse as it is beautiful so try and take in a little bit of every corner.
