This is a must do on the island”

Each edition, we ask one of our islanders, who live and work in the island and symbolise local life, to introduce you to Jersey.

Welcome

to our island.

Living in Jersey is an absolute gem – and trust me, it’s not just the stunning landscapes and the friendly vibes, but the lifestyle that comes with it.

First off, let’s talk about surfing. The waves here are like a surfer’s dream – consistent, just challenging enough, and with the bonus of breathtaking views along the coast. There’s something about catching a wave in St. Ouen’s bay that makes life here feel like a perpetual summer. Make sure to stop by Jake at The Jersey Surf School at Le Braye for all your surfing needs, he will be sure to point you in the right direction.

Then there’s golf – and let me tell you, swinging clubs against the backdrop of the picturesque Jersey scenery is an experience like no other. The lush green courses and the ocean breeze make each round an adventure, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just in it for the fun. Les Ormes is my personal favourite, as you can keep an eye on the tide whilst playing!

I might be a bit baised, but as the proud owner of Lakeys Bike Hire and Tours, I have to say there’s nothing like exploring the island on two wheels. The network of cycling paths is extensive, weaving through charming villages, coastal cliffs, and hidden spots you’d miss in a car. It’s not just a mode of transport; it’s a way of life.

Speaking of Lakeys Bike Hire, our weekly guided bike tours are the epitome of island exploration. Jump on one of our tours, and you’ll discover the nooks and crannies of Jersey that even locals might overlook.

It’s not just a bike ride; it’s a journey through history, culture, and the sheer beauty of this place. Trust me, it’s the best way to see the island. So if you’re looking for the ultimate island adventure, don’t miss the chance to join us on one of Lakeys weekly guided bike tours – it’s a ride you won’t forget.

There is not many places in the world I have visited where you can surf, play golf and end the day with a cycle to your favourite sunset dinner spot. El Tico Cantina being just one of the amazing choices to check out along the ‘five mile road’ . I am eternally grateful I can call this little island home.

Welcome

Where are you?

GET SET!

THINGS TO KNOW WHILE YOU’RE HERE

You’re on our beautiful little island in the English Channel but you’re a lot closer to France (around 14 miles at the closest point) than you are to England (closer to 100 miles). You’re surrounded by four other main Channel Islands; Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm and a handful of smaller inhabited and uninhabited islands. Our nearest coastal towns in France are Granville and the historic port of Saint-Malo. The term “Channel Islands” began to be used around 1830, possibly first by the Royal Navy as a collective name for the islands.

Bienvenue

Money

Pounds Sterling is the legal tender but we also have our own banknotes and coins which are classed as accepted tender elsewhere in the UK, people can take it, but they don’t have to - so don’t forget to spend your last few pound notes on souvenirs before you leave. If you forget though, a pound note also makes a great souvenir. Also, if you hold one of our bank notes up to the light you’ll not see a British king or queen in the hologram but the image of one of our own royalty.

Our Population

Since the last census in 2011 it’s estimated that our population has grown to around 105,500. You’ll find most of us in and around St. Helier leaving most of the northern, easterly and westerly parishes unspoilt and rural in nature. Roughly 50% of Jersey dwellers on the last census were locally born with 31% from the UK, 7% from Portugal/Madeira, 3% from Poland, 2% from Ireland and the rest from elsewhere.

Notre population

GETTING ABOUT

Arriving and leaving

If you arrive by air you’ll be one of a historical average of 1.6 million passengers per year to use Jersey Airport in the west of the island. Served by buses and taxis for onward travel right outside the arrivals hall, hire car services are also available inside the arrivals hall. Foreign exchange and postal services, including posting excess baggage are available in the departures hall.

www.jerseyairport.com / +44 (0) 1534 446000

If you’re wearing your sea legs, you’ll have arrived in St. Helier, Jersey’s capital. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall although central St. Helier is only a short walk away. Scheduled ferries operate between the Channel Islands, England and France and for those with their own boat Jersey Marinas offer a whole host of services for which they’ve earned ‘5 Gold Anchor’ status, an internationally recognised accolade.

Driving in Jersey

If you get lost, it’s worth bearing in mind that most locals won’t know where the A6 or B12 roads are, because all of our roads bear their own names in addition to these classifications. Your best bet? Point on a map or tell someone where you’re trying to get to! If you’re renting a car you’ll notice that the registration plate bears a white ‘H’ on a red background which denotes it as a hired vehicle. You’d best not flag down one of these for directions as they’re probably lost too. Like the United Kingdom, we drive on the left hand side of the road and all speed limits are posted in mph. The maximum permissable speed limit anywhere

is 40mph, with a large number of 30mph and 20mph zones. In the rural parishes you may also notice signs denoting ‘Green Lanes’ where the maximum speed limit is 15mph and right of way is given to those walking, cycling or riding horses. You’re also likely to come across a local driving phenomenon known as filter in turn. As you approach one, priority is given to traffic on your right. After they’ve made their move it’s your turn and traffic on your left will yield to you. It’s a great way to keep traffic flowing and once you see it in action it’ll all make sense. The mini roundabout at the bottom of Beaumont Hill is a prime example. Don’t panic, you’ll be fine!

24 GET SET

Conduite

Where there’s a wheel, there’s a way!

Enjoying Jersey’s breathtaking beaches is an experience that should be available to all. The soft sand between your toes, the smell of sea salt in the air, and not to mention sunny beach days spent with loved ones and friends.

BeachAbility’s mission is to make that a reality. They offers specially adapted wheelchairs designed to glide over sand and stone with ease. All our wheelchairs are available for loan, free of charge, at 7 Jersey beaches to anyone with permanent or temporary mobility complications.

Their Le Braye site, which was relocated to the Healing Waves Surf Therapy Centre in August 2022, offers an additional ‘Changing Place’ for users to transfer into the beach wheelchairs using a hoist, take a shower, and change in private.  A similar facility is also available at Churchill Memorial Park which is one of their most popular locations. These two sites also house a Hippocamp chair which has proven popular among their younger wheelchair users. The Hippocamp chair races across the sand and skims along the water’s edge. A priceless experience all children should enjoy!

BeachAbility are also looking for volunteers either to help us on the committee or to ‘meet and greet’ new people who would like to use the

chairs. If you feel you have a bit of spare time, then do get in touch. It is a very rewarding experience talking to someone who has not been able to go on the beach for years, (as their chair sinks in the sand) but in one of BeachAbility’s chairs, users can not only access the beach but also dip their toes in the sea! For more information get in touch.

For those who wish to make regular use of our chairs, BeachAbility offers Regular User Training. If you are interested, please enquire when booking. They can’t wait to see you at the beach this summer!

Parking on yellow lines is prohibited at all times. Multi-storey car parks also require Paycards with the exception of the Sand Street and underground Waterfront car parks which have ticket machines that accept both cash and cards as payment.

Catherine Best

St. Peter’s Windmill, home to award winning jewellery designer Catherine Best, was the last surviving working tower mill in Jersey.

This beautiful historic landmark dates back to 1837 and is built from Jersey granite. The weighbridge and millers office where grain used to be delivered to the Windmill for milling also survived and has become a handy site for buses to stop. The Windmill is part of a complex that includes a jewellery manufacturing workshop, the Catherine Best jewellery showroom. It is set in rural Jersey and has tranquil, manicured gardens where visitors can relax with a drink and something to eat, whilst taking in the surroundings from which Catherine draws her inspiration.

Geoparks are outstanding places around the world that celebrate the links between people and the earth. Jersey is a strong contender for this special designation because of our island’s exceptional geology and unique cultural heritage which forms the breathtaking surroundings we enjoy every day.

As an ‘Aspiring Geopark’, Jersey is on track to achieving the special designation of a ‘Geopark.’ Explore Jersey’s diverse landscapes, uncover our unique heritage and be inspired by our remarkable seascapes – it’s all waiting to be discovered in our Aspiring Geopark.

SEE
84

Did you know that Jersey is an Aspiring Geopark?

A Geopark is about more than rocks. Each one is unique and tells the whole story of an area, right from the very beginning. There are 195 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 48 countries around the world. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture. The UNESCO Global Geoparks celebrate the links between people

and the Earth. Jersey hopes to be recognised as a unique place by being awarded Geopark status.

The Aspiring Jersey Geopark Visitor Centre at Jersey Museum introduces the story of Jersey’s geological heritage and is the island hub for information on exploring Jersey to see first-hand how geology has shaped and influenced the Island we know today.

Ways to explore our Aspiring Geopark

Explore our otherworldly offshore reefs.

Explore the parts of the Aspiring Geopark that lie offshore. From an exhilarating RIB ride, to a lobster picnic and glass of champagne on a deserted beach to dolphin spotting – there is a Seafari for everyone. Jersey Seafaris, Island RIB Voyages, Le Mourier Marine and Nauti Buoy RIBs provide regular boat trips, tours and private charters around the beautiful coastline and offshore reefs: Les Écréhous and Les Minquiers, giving you the chance to experience one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world, discover secret sandbanks and hidden wonders around every corner. See activity operators in our ‘do’ and ‘tours’ sections

Walking.

Jersey’s cliff-edged heights and wide sandy bays are best seen on foot, with a breeze to keep you cool. You’ll find an extensive network of footpaths as well as winding country lanes, and breathtaking beaches. Walking is a great way to explore the outdoors allowing us to wander through Jersey’s spectacular landscapes, enjoying this Aspiring Geopark’s natural and built heritage.

See walking tours on page 102

Cycling.

Explore the Aspiring Jersey Island Geopark on two wheels, with a network of 15 mph ‘Green Lanes’ through the island’s countryside and miles of bicycle-friendly routes, a cycle ride is the perfect way to explore our unique island. Enjoy taking in the sights from the slow lane or challenge yourself with an uphill climb. We may be small, but we pack many diverse, beautiful and challenging cycle routes into our nine miles by five. You’ll be spoilt for choice for bike hire in Jersey, you’ll find mountain, leisure and road bikes and e-bikes if you’re looking for a little assistance.

Diving and Snorkelling.

The sun warms the sea all summer long. The average water temperature is 15 – 20°C during the summer months (April to October). Jersey’s shallow marine habitats offer an opportunity to explore the beauty and diversity that lies beneath the waves through the creation of snorkel trails at Portelet Bay and Bouley Bay. Portelet Bay boasts an element of isolation from the island, forming its own little oasis. A small islet located in the middle of the bay, Janvrin’s Tomb (or Île au Guerdain), is surrounded by water at high tide. Bouley Bay has long been the spiritual home of diving on the island and the trail there showcasing a range of habitats as well as a reef of kelp and seaweed stretching across the bay alongside a sandy seabed.

What makes our Aspiring Geopark so special?

Geopark Ambassadors are Jersey locals who champion our unique landscapes and seascapes through their roles within our community and their passion for island life. Each Ambassador was asked about what makes this island such a remarkable place…

The Jersey sub species of buff-tailed bumblebee, despite the name, does not have a buff tail. It is also known as the Jersey white-tailed bumblebee. This bumblebee is a native pollinator to Jersey and can have active nests over winter. They nest underground often using small mammal holes with up to 500 workers in a nest. They can be found all over the Island, from gardens to sites of scientific interest.

They are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species as they are being unsustainably fished in other parts of the world.” Tope can be found at Les Minquiers, one of our offshore reefs, which boasts hundreds of granite fangs, wildlife, geology and archaeology.

BEACHLIFE

No matter how you spend your time on Jersey, you’ll no doubt want to feel either the sand between your toes or breathe in the fresh sea air as you explore our beaches and coves. They each have their own unique personality. Choose the one that’s right for you...

A quiet and rarely crowded east-facing stretch of sand that catches the morning and midday sun. 2

Archirondel NE

This popular beach with an excellent beach cafe is pebbly at first but sandy at low tide when the water stays shallow for some way out. East-facing, Archirondel loses the sun in the late afternoon. 2

Bouley Bay N

A winding hill leads down to this steep pebble beach with deep water for competent swimmers. The bay is home to one of Jersey’s scuba-diving schools. 4

Green Island SE

A locals’ favourite, this sheltered south-facing beach is a real sun trap where soft sand, rock climbing and rock pool adventures await. The tide goes out a long way, so take care with the swift incoming tide and pick times close to high water to enjoy swimming or paddling. 1

Grève de Lecq NW

The most popular of the north coast beaches, Grève de Lecq’s sheltered sands and rockpools are ideal for families but lose the sun in the late afternoon. Don’t miss the excellent cafés and local pubs close by. Even in the winter months, some providers offer coasteering trips for guided cold-water dips! 9

Beauport SW

A real suntrap on the south coast, once you’ve wandered down the steep path from the car park and crossed the pebbles, you’ll reach a sheltered south-facing beach with golden sand and shallow turquoise water, ideal for swimming. 12a, 14 to St. Brelade’s Bay, then walk along the cliffs

Bonne Nuit N

A tiny fishing harbour with space to play on the sand, picnic or catch some sun, but more of a wild swim that some other beaches. Worth visiting for the excellent beach café. 4

Grouville Bay / La Rocque Harbour SE

A long stretch of sand that leads to Gorey harbour, with Mont Orgueil Castle as a backdrop. Plenty of parking, beach cafes and kiosks as well as a children’s beachside playground and soft sand make Long Beach a local favourite. 1a, 2

89

St. Brelade’s Bay SW

The beautiful beach at St. Brelade’s Bay is one of the island’s busiest; a visitor favourite for its soft sand, safe swimming, beach activities and seaside eating. Voted as number three in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards, this stunning south-facing beach is in the sun for most of the day. 12a, 14

Havre des Pas S

Close to the centre of St. Helier, this sandy beach is worth a visit to see the architecture of the art deco pool, filled by the tide each day. The beach is easy to access, and safe for swimmers. 1

Rozel Bay NE

A small fishing village lined with beach huts and harbourside cottages, Rozel is more of a fishing harbour than a place to swim. But at low tide, Rozel’s small stretch of white sand is safe for children to play, just look out for the Rozel geese! 3

St. Aubin’s Bay SW

A crescent of south-facing sand from St. Helier to St. Aubin, the beach is in full sun for most of the day. With several beach cafes along the promenade front, look out for the softest sand around the Gunsite Café with jet ski hire close by. 12a, 14, 15

Ouaisné Bay SW

This south west facing beach is the wilder contrast to the adjoining St. Brelade’s Bay. The beaches are connected at low tide, or cross the pine-rich headland and walk along the sea wall next to the protected Ouaisné Common towards locals’ favourite, The Smugglers Inn.. 12a

Portelet Bay SW

Climb down the long flight of steps and you’ll be rewarded with a sunny, sheltered and sandy beach circling Janvrin’s Tomb at the centre. Portelet Bay Beach Café serves excellent pizza throughout the season, and the pub at the top of the steps, the Old Portelet Inn is a family favourite. 12a

Plémont NW

A pristine sandy cove reachable by a long flight of steps, where the intrepid are rewarded with a stunning natural playground of rock pools and sea caves. There’s safe swimming when the sea is calm, and surfing when it’s wild. The beach is completely covered at high tide. It’s quite a walk down from the bus stop so pack sensible footwear! 8

St. Ouen’s Bay W

A magnificent beach and natural playground for surfers and adrenaline seekers. It’s where one of the oldest surfing clubs in Europe has its home and makes a stunning setting for beach walks. Swimmers should take care in the strong currents and stick to the flagged zones. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the season. 22

What does working as a Blue Badge Guide mean to you?

Freedom. There is never a typical working day for a Blue Badge Guide. One day you can be in the office organising itineraries, in the archives researching island stories, or out walking new routes. On another day you can be showcasing the best of the Island on an Island Panoramic Tour for a visiting tour group; leading a private tour of our States Chambers and Royal Court, or exploring the cliff paths with hikers. From uncovering the mysteries and histories of the ancient dolmens with archaeologists, to taking a group

of excited French schoolchildren around our castles, each day provides you with joy, new knowledge, and a strong sense of wellbeing.

Top Jersey facts that not even our islanders might know?

Jersey has a plethora of fascinating stories, and it is extremely difficult to pick just one. However, one of my favourites is that Jersey was the first place in the British Isles to have letter boxes, and these were introduced by none other than the famous author Anthony Trollope. You can still find a number of Victorian Post Boxes in the

WALKS & TOURS 98 MEET THE GUIDE KARY DAY MITG, Blue Badge Tourist Guide, Jersey Uncovered

island, but one that remains in use is the oldest. It is seen every day in our Central Market. Just underneath the market clock, on the site of the old market post office (now Relish delicatessen). Next time you are in the Central Market, admire our rare Penfold Post Box (named for its designer John Penfold) created and installed in 1866.

Another fun titbit relates to our 18th century Conway towers dotted around the Island. Did you know that the gunpowder was actually kept on the ground floor, directly underneath the fireplace in purpose-built gunpowder store. Nice and toasty, and potentially explosive! Also, the towers were built as Napoleonic defences at the tail end of the 18th century, but the machicolations (the defensive protrusions on the tops of the towers) were only added to the majority of the towers in the early 19th Century. Anyone wanting to admire one of our lovely Conway Towers needs only to nip down to Le Hocq on the first Sunday of every month – where we hold a Tower Open Day. It is well worth a visit – and what’s more, its FREE.

If you could take guests to just one walking area in Jersey it would be...

Ah, well I am a girl from the East of the Island, and it is in the East where my heart lies. My most favourite of walks begins in St Catherine’s Woods, where you can enjoy beautiful flora and fauna, spot a squirrel or two cheekily running through the trees, and the most amazing bird life. Follow the footpath out of the Woods leading to the back of our picturesque Rozel Manor, and you will often see our beautiful Jersey cows grazing peacefully in the fields. At the end of the path you follow our charming lanes down towards Flicquet, and then take the footpath above the erstwhile Verclut Quarry to St Catherine’s Breakwater. Time for a quick cuppa and a Jersey wonder, or an ice-cream before you head off along the coastal footpath, back to the White Tower. Cross the roadcarefully, find the shortcut through the wooded area and you are back at the lower entrance to St Catherine’s Woods. It makes for a lovely couple of hours, relaxing in nature, where you get to enjoy flora, fauna and coast, all in two short hours.

When you aren’t guiding others around the island, where do you like to take yourself?

The beaches, especially Le Hocq and Green Island. There is nothing more relaxing than strolling along the beach at high tide, and enjoying the sounds and smells of the ocean. Walking in the intertidal zone (taking good note of the tide times) where you are at total peace with nature is an absolute treat, and there is so much to see, knowing that in just a few hours it will all be submerged under a substantial tide. It is my golden time.

WALKS & TOURS 99

What is one thing that you think everyone who visits Jersey should experience?

Really – one thing? I have to choose? I would say, watch the sunrise over Mont Orgueil Castle, then tide permitting immerse yourself in the ocean for a quick swim in the Royal Bay of Grouville, and warm up with a cup of hot tea and a croissant or Jersey Wonder at our wonderful Rhona’s on the Beach. No matter what time of year, just make sure you stay safe, and warm up quick. Jersey is not only about what you can see and visit, it is about the experiences you can have while you are here.

You’re also a mathematician and data analyst, what are some interesting data facts you could tell us? Definitely NOT a mathematician. Story teller - yes, maths person - not at all.

You are also a Jersey Heritage site guide – do you have an interesting Heritage fact you can tell us? One interesting, and little known fact is that some of the rooms inside the Keep of Mont Orgueil Castle were refurbished by Philippe d’Auvergne, Prince of Bouillon to house a kidnapped Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804. D’Auvergne, a Jerseyman and Master and Commander of the British Fleet, was stationed at the Castle at the time of the French Revolution, and tasked with leading a spy network in France called La Correspondance.

D’Auvergne had conspired with a Breton dissident, Georges Cadoual, to kidnap the French General whilst he was travelling to one of his rural

estates. The intention was to transport him to Jersey to be held in the Southern Tower of Mont Orgueil Castle before being taken on to England. However, the French Secret Police got wind of the plot and the kidnap never took place.

What’s the best relic you’ve found on one of your tours?  This would be the 17th century Barrel well of Le Hocq. I had watched it carefully over the last 10 years, being continually covered and uncovered by our tides, remaining wonderfully intact, until just a few months ago.

The Barrel wells were sunk in a beach known as Le Havre es Fontaines, the Harbour of Fresh Water, where springs of fresh water still bubble up through the sands and onto the beach. When collecting the Vraic (seaweed for fertilizer) in the 17th Century, the workers needed somewhere for their horses to drink. They would dig a neat and deep hole, and sink oak barrels without a base or a lid. This would enable the horses to drink the fresh water with ease. If you see your doggies eagerly lapping up water on this beach don’t be too concerned – the chances are that it is still lovely fresh water from the springs far below the sands.

Sadly, at the tail end of the summer of 2023 some eager walkers spotted the barrel, and being curious they dug it up and carried it, in pieces, up to the top of the beach, where, having satisfied their curiosity, they abandoned it to dry in the sun. Such action meant that we have lost this amazing 17th century well forever.

WALKS & TOURS 100 MEET THE GUIDE

Fortunately, the pieces were spotted by a beach local, retrieved and passed on to the Conservation Department of Jersey Heritage, who are doing their best to save it, perhaps for a future display. But we may already have been too late. The message here to everyone is really, if you find something old, of interest, please take a photograph, mark its position, and leave it in situ. Let the experts know, and they can decide what course of action should be taken. I shall forever mourn the loss of our wonderful Barrel Well of Le Hocq.

For you, what is the best piece of local folklore?

That would be the Witch’s Rock or Rocqueberg, known as Rocher de La Sorcière. Once described as “the Witch hunting capital of Atlantic Europe” proportionate to its size of course, the Channel Islands were steeped in witchcraft through the 16th and 17th Centuries.

At this time the Island had a population of around 10,000, and at least 65 Witch Trials were brought before the Royal Court with only 8 leading to banishment and at least 33 ending in execution of the accused. 87% of those brought to trial, were women.

The hazardous rocky coastline of the east of the Island, was said to be guarded by the Witches of Rocqueberg.

It is no surprise therefore, that fishermen passing by Rocqueberg were commanded to give the thirteenth fish of their catch to the Witches, who were not known for their patience and generosity. To fail to do

so would be to risk dreadful storms raised by the hags, in which your vessel, and you, would be smashed on the jagged hidden rocks of this treacherous coastline.

For centuries the thirteenth fish of each catch was dutifully provided to the witches until one day, a young fisherman refused to comply any longer. Finding a five-rayed starfish in his catch, he cleverly broke off one of the “arms”, so that it resembled a cross, and threw it to the hags shouting defiantly “This cross is my passport”. It landed amongst the Witches, and was enough to ensure that they disappeared forever from this headland. Or did they? Are they perhaps forever incarcerated in the granite of Witch’s rock at Rocqueberg, never to escape.

Myth or fact? We may never know. But from the “Witch’s seats” on the chimneys of houses, to the “witch’s bottles” filled with hair, nail clippings and blood amongst other items, which were randomly buried in the foundations of houses to ward off spells in the 16th and 17th Centuries, there is evidence all around us of our ancestor’s beliefs. It is perhaps for us to form our own opinion.

La Mare Black Butter

Maison de Jersey £6.45

Like everything from La Mare this is made in their inhouse kitchen. Despite the name Black Butter is actually a rich and spicy apple preserve that goes back hundreds of years. The island used to be full of apple orchards and cider was made by farmers to give to staff as part of their wages! People would then make Black Butter by boiling the cider over an open fire for up to two days and would then add apples, sugar, lemon, spices and a hint of liquorice while continuously stirring with a wooden ‘rabot’ or paddle. Use it on sweet or savoury dishes.

Ganache

Assorted box of 25 mixed chocolates and pralines £30.

Our foodie isle.

On an island which houses little more than 120,000 people we may appear to be small but when it comes to our foodie offering we would consider ourselves pretty mighty. What follows are just a handful of our brilliant eateries, if you’re here for just a few days… we can assure you that you won’t go hungry!

If I was asked for my death row meal I’d want at least one of those courses to be a dish you’d find on a breakfast menu, for years we’ve been told it’s the most important meal of the day and who am I to disagree with Mr Kellogg’s. That said, whatever time of day it is, if you’re hopping straight off the plane and into a hire car head down to St Ouen’s (pronounced One!), the bay you possibly flew over, where you’ll find some cracking all-day dining spots with a view of the sea. Whether that’s El Tico, Le Braye or Sands, they all have excellent varied menus which feature plenty of local produce.

The Fruit De Mer, a summer staple.

Bus or taxi your mode of transport? Then we’d suggest heading into St Helier to start your culinary journey. Just a few minutes walk from Liberation Station you’ll find The Pavillion (if you’re lost ask someone to direct you towards the Flying Lady statue!). More of our excellent local produce can be found on their brunch based menu including dishes like their Jersey Hot Honey Burrata or grab a homemade nduja sausage roll, which will be the size of your head.

A few streets away you’ll find Locke’s (where I’m sat writing this), a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. If you’re there early doors you’ll be able to see a number of suppliers bringing their local produce directly to their doors. Their brunch menu features some OG favourites like the Notorious BLT and Friends with Benedicts and also includes some seasonally changing specials, they also serve an excellent Breakfast Martini and great coffee too.

Just grabbing and going then get up to Dandy. With a counter heaving full of daily baked artisan goods and fantastic All-Press coffee you can’t go wrong. Four Bakery is another scratch bakery with an excellent team producing phenomenal sourdough viennoiserie and other baked goods.

LUNCH

Jersey’s central market is having somewhat of a revival and that means it’s offering some nighttime dining options on Friday and Saturdays. If they don’t work then you can enjoy both the La Bouche menu and Casa Paco’s delicious tapas and authentic Spanish fare at lunchtimes too.

If you’re looking for Asian inspired fare head to Phire to enjoy their all day dining menu or Awabi just a few streets away, both of them are in St Helier and offer fantastic food, wine lists and cocktails too.

If you’re heading out East then you’ve got a plethora of options in Gorey whether that be a leisurely lunch sipping wine and eating seafood at Sumas with a great view of the Castle or enjoying the hospitality at The Moorings which sits on the harbour both are great. Or pop a little further round the coast to Archirondel to pay a visit to the Driftwood Cafe, where they’re serving a seafood inspired menu featuring the catch of its fishermen owners.

DINNER SPOTS

Pêtchi would be at the top of my list for dinner reservations, but reserve you must as it is a busy spot. If you, like me, are a foodie voyeur and love to see what the chefs are up to then get yourselves seated at the counter which overlooks the open kitchen and watch the magic happen. A regularly changing menu cooked on a wood-fired grill, using the best of seasonal produce and a cracking cocktail menu should tick a number of your foodie boxes. They’re open for lunch too.

Bohemia is our only restaurant with a Michelin star and well worth a visit for lunch or dinner. I’m a big fan of their surprise tasting menu as it offers you the chance to truly immerse yourself in the dining experience without knowing what’s coming next. Be sure to let them know if there’s anything you can’t eat or don’t like though!

The Salty Dog is about to take up residence in a new spot in St Aubin, same great Asian fusion food and fabulous service but a slightly different location which takes them even closer to the bus stop and means they’ll have the added luxury of a lot more outdoor space, perfect for those long summer evenings.

STILL LOOKING FOR MORE…

How about something to take home, or munch while you’re thinking about your next move? Please go and find Ganache at Castle Quay. Glen and Constance have brought the insane chocolatier and patisserie skills developed in France and the Middle East back to our tiny isle and we couldn’t be more delighted, we can’t be specific about what you should buy because we’d opt for one of everything if we could!

Writing this has reminded me just how much we have to offer on our 9 by 5 and this really is the tip of the iceberg. Wherever you head have a fantastic time tasting your way around the island.

Shake up your nights.

Whether you’re looking for a big night out or a quick last order, St. Helier serves up a great selection of nighttime haunts; from Blind Pigs to Porters’ Stores, Jersey have something for all.

The Weighbridge is a good place to start. The dominant Royal Yacht Hotel has a variety of different drinking options available, whether it be outside sipping wine in their large al fresco area, squirrelled away in the Cabin bar (the last remaining part of the original historic building) or dancing the night away in their ‘Drift’ bar, there is something for everyone. Just over the road, The Square offers excellent food options and you can also drink there until 01:00. Across the cobbles of the Weighbridge, Just up the road from the Weighbridge on Hill Street is the expansive Chambers, which offers live music; a fusion of pub culture and bar atmosphere.

The Porter’s Store

If you fancy your nightlife a little more intimate. Tucked away behind Chambers is The Blind Pig, hidden down a back alley just around the corner (you can also get there through a little hidden door at the back of Chambers itself). One of our original speak-easy bars, it specialises in cocktails in a small but beautifully appointed room. Just a few turns away on Wharf Street, this year sees the addition of The Porter’s Store, which channels a 70s Americana vibe into its cocktail den.

Just one more right turn, on Broad Street, you’ll find Vinifera, worth investigating for an early evening glass of wine from one of the island’s most experienced owner-sommeliers. They also offer a private table in the basement, bookable for groups to take wine with delicious food.

If it’s wine time, you should carry on across town where you’ll find the newly opened The Watchmaker, a chic ‘wine, Champagne and charcutie’ bar. If you’re looking for some predinner drinks, the bar at Samphire and their upstairs terrace (open weather-permitting). The location provides the perfect oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the high street.

If you like the vibe of a premium hotel bar then don’t miss the cool calm of the Bohemia Bar and Roof Terrace at The Club Hotel and Spa on Green Street. The timeless elegance of the bar is matched by a cool calm, great drinks and the chance to be on-hand for dinner at our fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant.

(That’s Jèrriais for ‘Welcome to Jersey’)

A little more local knowledge...

History

The earliest evidence of human activity in Jersey dates to about 250,000 years ago and it was only 6,000 years ago that Jersey was part of mainland Europe before rising tides cut us off and made us an island.

During the American Wars of Independence, two attempted invasions of the island were made. In 1779, the Prince of Orange William V was prevented from landing at St. Ouen’s Bay and on 06 January 1781 a force led by Baron de Rullecourt captured St. Helier in a daring dawn raid, but was defeated by a British

army led by Major Francis Peirson in the Battle of Jersey. Jersey was the fourth-largest ship building area in the 19th-century British Isles, building over 900 vessels around the island.

Jersey was occupied by Nazi German troops between 1940 and 1945, with the Channel Islands being the only British soil occupied during World War II. This period of occupation saw about 8,000 islanders evacuated, 1,200 islanders deported to camps in Germany, and over 300 islanders sentenced to the prisons and concentration camps of mainland Europe. Many islanders remained and

BE A LOCAL 150

the island was liberated by British troops on 09 May 1945, now celebrated as a public holiday locally.

People

Mostly a mix of Norman French and British settlers, Jersey’s community has also been enriched by the influences of the number of Europeans who also call Jersey their home. If you hear anybody referring to a Crapaud (French for toad) or a Jersey Bean they’ll be talking about one of the natives.

Language

The native language, which you’ll see displayed in a few locations around the island such as the airport and harbour is called Jèrriais but you’ll probably not hear it spoken unless you find yourself in the deepest, darkest of rural parishes such as St. Ouen, where 8% of parishioners speak it according to the results of a 2012 survey. English is the most widely spoken language.

Jersey and its neighbours

Jersey has an interesting relationship with both the UK and Europe in that it’s a Crown Dependency, meaning that despite having our own independent government, locals answer to the King and the British military support our interests should the need arise. Despite being part of the British Isles, Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom. We’re also not part of the European Union but are a member of the EEC. Confused? You’ll fit right in!

Honorary Police

In addition to the States of Jersey Police force, who serve islandwide, each of Jersey’s twelve parishes has its own police service that only have jurisdiction within the boundaries of their own

If you hear anybody referring to a Crapaud (French for toad) or a Jersey Bean they’ll be talking about one of the natives.

parish, also known as the Honorary Police, who are headquartered at each of the parish halls.

Economy

The local economy thrives from a combination of offshore finance, tourism, digital and agriculture. Bathe at our beaches, enjoy our local attractions, dine on our fresh produce including world famous potatoes and dairy products from the herds of local Jersey cows.

Tides

Jersey’s tidal range is one of the largest in the world with a range of around 12 metres. We’ve also got some of the cleanest water in the British Isles, which is a winning combination when it comes to keeping our beaches great. It’s worth noting that because of the huge tidal range that the sea level does rise quickly and it’s easy to get caught out. Be mindful that if you stray too far from the shore there could be a risk of tides cutting you off and leaving you stranded. Pay close attention to the signs and know the dangers.

Safe Swimming

The RNLI have lifeguards stationed at popular bays who provide cover between the red and yelow flags. For more information: www.rnlijersey.org.je

Decoding the dialect

A local advises...

Whilst English is the most widely spoken language here in Jersey, if you find yourself interacting with some of the purest of locals you might notice a distinctive intonation that’s likely a remnant of our Norman roots despite sounding closer to a South African twang.

They’re hard to find these days but they’re definitely out there, mostly hidden away in the rural parishes. I should know, I’m descended from them and occasionally find myself pronouncing an ‘arn’ sound as ‘on’ in a way that’d likely disgust the King. The example sentence above sums this up

relatively succinctly. If you find yourself talking to somebody who pronounces words like this there’s a good chance they’ll be able to give you reliable directions. Just make sure you’re pronouncing the place names properly. To give you a head start we’ve listed a few on the page to the right.

Where are you heading?

Here are a few commonly mispronounced place names and how to say them so that nobody stares at you in complete and utter bewilderment. Good luck!

OFF ISLAND / day trips from Jersey

If you’re in Jersey for more than a couple of days, you can extend your trip further afield by taking in some other great destinations within a short boat ride. Whether it’s to the walled city of St. Malo on the French coast, the tranquility of Sark or the beauty of the remote outlying islands, grab a RIB, ferry or charter and head off for the day to add an extra element to your Jersey holiday!

ST. MALO is just an hour away but presents an opportunity to experience life inside a unique French walled city. Just pulling in to port there is quite impressive as you take in the structure of this unique coastal enclave. In recent years, the town has developed and modernised infrastructure which has led to an increase of quality retail and hospitality offerings. Whether you’re looking for boutique shopping or moules frites served by genuine French waiter, you’ll be satisfied. Check out the amazing La Java bar, filled with dolls and complete with bar stools swinging from the ceiling.

St. Malo

LES ÉCRÉHOUS are a group of islands and rocks situated six miles north-east of Jersey (eight miles from France). They form part of the Bailiwick of Jersey and are administratively part of the parish of St. Martin. The largest is Maitre Ile, 300 metres long and 150 wide. Only two others remain above water at high tide, Marmoutier, which is considerably smaller, and Blanche Ile, smaller still. There are now no permanent residents on the islands and there is no fresh water there. There are a small number of fishermen's huts, some used as holiday residences.

GUERNSEY our sister isle, both similar in characteristic but unique in its own right. The Donkeys to our Crapauds, Guernsey has been described as the Harrods to Jersey’s Selfridges, a slightly older and more established, if a little quieter, location. The capital St. Peter Port is a pretty little town with a cobbled high street and a selection of local independant shops. The island’s coastal locations provide great walking or cycling destinations. If you’re hungry for lunch, grab a steak in Red or seafood at the harbourside Boathouse.

ISLANDS UNLIMITED have the options you need to make the most of your visit to the Channel Islands. Book a trip, take a ferry, and discover our islands on a Coach Tour.
