It may come as no surprise that Genuine Jersey Member Dominic Le Huquet of Purpleheart Woodturning is a wood turner! Here he tells us all about his journey to mastering this skill to produce the beautiful pieces he now sells.

How did you learn to woodturn, and how have you developed your skills?

My woodturning journey started in 2019 when I went to a show in the UK. There, I was able to make a slimline pen, and from that moment on, I was hooked. A couple of months and several YouTube videos later, I was ordering my lathe and materials to start turning from home. I have always been creative, but the other crafts I have tried, such as jewellery making and metalwork, have never really worked out. Woodturning is the one thing I have been able to excel at. The early days were very trial and error, and a few projects ended up in the bin as they didn’t work out, but it was the mistakes that I learned from in order to develop my skill set. I still have a lot to learn, but I am loving the journey.

Is there a particular product you like making the most of from your range?

It’s a tie between two products that I make. The first is my coloured pencil bowls, which are my favourite piece as they are so versatile. I can pigment the resin to most colours, and the contrast of the base colour against the multi-coloured pieces of pencil makes for a really bright and engaging piece. These are always popular and draw the eye due to their appearance. The second is my wooden bowl with inlaid decoration, as the possibilities are endless. I have incorporated flower petals from people's weddings, shredded US banknotes, coffee beans, Jersey sand, monopoly board game pieces, and so much more into these bowls, and they can be customised to the customer's specifications or requirements.

Can you tell us about your genuine jersey products?

I manufacture a whole range of items, including bowls, bottle stoppers and openers, pens, and Christmas decorations, to name a few. I love to blend traditional and modern materials in projects; my crypto currency bowls are the prime example of this. I use an oak blank for the base of the bowl and then inlay them with shredded US banknotes and replica bitcoins to add another dimension. Sometimes I just use modern materials. For example, my stamp pens are made using actual Jersey postage stamps that are glued around a brass core, and then resin is poured over the top. These are then turned into the final shape, making for a totally unique piece with a local connection.

What inspires you to create a new piece?

Inspiration is all around; channelling it is the hardest part. I will come across an item or product and think about how I can incorporate it into a new project. Can I make a handle that looks like that item? Can I incorporate that product into a piece? It’s also seeing what other makers are creating and seeing if there is a way I can do something similar but make it my own; that’s the fun part.

How do you source your wood for turning?

Most of my timber comes from timber mills in the UK. I use a blend of traditional and exotic timbers such as oak, ash, beech, purpleheart, zebrano, and panga panga, to name a few. The main focus is using sustainable timber, so I am not adding to the deforestation. I would love to use local timber, but I don’t have the machinery nor the space to dry my own wood, and I would hate for someone to buy one of my pieces, and then a year later it splits because it has not been dried properly. Some of the wood I use has come from antique furniture that is no longer fit for purpose; this is usually table and chair legs as they have a good working diameter.

Do you take commissions?

Absolutely. I love to undertake commissions; there is nothing more special than being involved with a gift for someone’s special event. It also allows me to really push myself in terms of the materials and methods, as I can engage with the client and we can brainstorm ideas to try to make their vision come to life while incorporating my specific style. They are also stressful, as you only get one chance with certain items, and if you get them wrong, there is no second chance. I have made wedding bowls and boxes, memory boxes, and bowls for birthdays.

Rural tranquility

If you grew up in the 90s, you might remember 'The Battle of Britpop' that pitted the Gallagher Brothers' Oasis and Damon Albarn's Blur in a pseudo-class war of muisical rivalry. I was bipartisan in the battle, and while I probably had more in common with the Oasis side, and liked some of their music, Liam and Noel just seemed a bit too full of themselves to me. When 'Country House' took the number one spot ahead of 'Roll with it' (not their best), I therefore felt the better team won on the day.

'Country House' was Damon Albarn's tongue-in-cheek interpretation of a man-done-good living a rural existence with the trappings of wealth and success. The pinnacle of that is, as the name suggests, a very big house in the country.  The subject (Keith Allan) is seen dancing around a large lawn in front of an imposing country estate. An irony of the whole battle is that Liam Gallagher, despite his staunch working-class orientation and devout objection to his southern upper middle class art school rivals, now lives in a country house—a £4 million mock Tudor mansion that was previously owned by Noel Edmonds. Let's face it, if you've done well, it's ideal. Drinks by the pool, the morning in your private gym, your own tennis court, perhaps a stable! Who wouldn't aspire to make that their home, whether you read Balzac or not.

If you transpose those ideals to Jerseys' shores, there are only a relatively small number of properties that tick all those boxes. This St. Mary property does, however, fit the bill; an elegant, countryside residence set in beautifully landscaped, private gardens.

MORTGAGE market update

As we end the first quarter of the year, it is clear the energy that first appeared in the local housing market at the beginning of the year has continued and in fact grown as we look at the number of new transactions that are currently being agreed between willing vendors and purchasers who have already sought advice on their borrowing capacity.

INCREASED ACTIVITY

After eighteen months of a totally inactive market, this is welcome news for purchasers who are able to satisfy the close scrutiny of the seven mortgage providers in the Jersey market where stress and affordability tests have replaced income multiples.

Borrowers now realize they must make big sacrifices if they wish to become property owners by reducing expenditure on many items except for food, services, transport and education for their children.

A RETURN TO THE NORM

This is nothing new, as it was the norm up to twelve years ago when mortgage rates fell to unrealistically low figures and mortgage lenders offered high levels of income multiple. House prices rose out of control until the Bank of England’s Base Rate moved from 0.01% to 5.25% in fourteen consecutive jumps, which resulted in the market crashing.

The aftermath of these events has been tough for people who bought at the top end of the market and now find themselves trapped in what for some of them is negative equity where their mortgage exceeds the value of their property.

For those owners who purchased a few years ago, and who wish to trade up, the situation is much easier if they adopt a realistic attitude towards asking price and are prepared to negotiate the price downwards – an experienced Estate Agent will happily help with guideline figures.

ASKING PRICES CONTINUE TO FALL

Asking prices have fallen by in excess of 20% when you look at current transactions and this figure will fall even further as the market slowly recovers. This is not a signal for vendors to start increasing their asking prices as the recovery still has a long way to go and will be dictated by interest rates and lending criteria.

WHEN WILL INTEREST RATES FALL?

With the Bank of England Base Rate currently standing at 5.25%, all eyes are on the swaps market which reflects predictions of the future level of this rate. Currently, this suggests that we will see this falling to 4.5% by year end, in three increments each of 0.25%.

Should this happen, the impact could be significant as it will give new purchasers an even greater incentive to move forward.

Several years ago, interest rates were increased to combat inflation that was running too high and was reduced significantly due to the Bank of England’s determination to redress the balance, and this policy appears to have been successful in the current financial market. It should be remembered however that inflation in the UK is very much at the mercy of worldwide events which could fuel a new wave of inflationary pressures particularly in respect of oil and shipping costs.

A WIDE CHOICE OF PROPERTY ON THE MARKET

Despite interest rates being high, the potential activity that we are seeing in the market is tangible, with 1443 properties featured on places.je, of which no less than 265 are being advertised at less than £400,000 - 308 properties are featured in the range between £300,000 and £500,000, with a further 288 on sale from £500,000 up to £700,000.

These statistics clearly illustrate that there is a wide choice of property to match the expectations of many of the house hunters who are currently entering the market.

BEST RATES

The best mortgage interest rates that are available this month have changed little since the flurry of competitive activity that occurred earlier this year, and this always causes a dilemma for purchasers entering the market or seeking advice on re-mortgaging from an existing fixed rate that is about to expire.

We usually discuss three options to include examples of two- and five-year fixed rates and a two-year tracker.

If rates are going to fall, then a five-year rate could well be too expensive after the first year or so, which means that the choice of a two-year fix might be of better value despite the shortness of the term. Alternatively, a tracker rate, whilst being the most expensive of the three, will benefit from immediate changes in the event of Base Rate moving.
