Welcome to investments tailored for you

At Ravenscroft, our Advisory team understands that some clients may have investment requirements which are not suited to a “one-size fits all” approach. At the heart of our Advisory investment service is the development of a close, ongoing working relationship so that we understand your objectives, your time frames and how you feel about investing and the level of risk you wish to take. This allows us to provide tailored investment recommendations and help shape your portfolio to meet your specific goals.

Whilst you remain in control of investment decisions, we provide the investment expertise to serve as a sounding board, bringing additional support to your choices or an opinion on your investment ideas.

Meet the Jersey Advisory Team

What do you like about the Advisory service?

“The satisfaction of helping clients find the right investment solutions for them. The ability to provide ‘trusted advice’ which is hard to come by and which often extends beyond our core service.”

Charlie

How we work together

Your dedicated advisor will work closely with you to design a portfolio that will meet your individual wealth and investment goals; these could be focused on generating a regular income or on growing the overall sum invested, or a balance of both.

Our investment recommendations are drawn from a wide range of research, industry and market information from which we build our Advisory stock list which is comprised of equities, bonds, investment trusts, funds and commodities.

A personal service

At Ravenscroft, we believe that building an investment portfolio is unique to you, which is why the personal touch is still a core part of our service.

We are always available if you want to talk to your advisor on the phone, by email, or come in for a chat about your investments. While this service is a two-way relationship, the control of your portfolio always remains with you.

From time to time, we will provide new investment ideas that we believe are suitable and interesting to you.

Is this the investment service for me?

There is really no one typical client, however as an Advisory client it is key to have an interest in investing and be able to assess recommendations before approving transactions on your account. Perhaps you’ve gained a high level of understanding of markets through your business career or are a retired investment professional wishing to maintain a close connection with markets and discuss your ideas. If this sounds like you, our Advisory service could be a good fit. Many clients have an interest in their portfolios and, if they are retired, now have more time to spend on them so wish to retain an element of control whilst benefitting from our advice.

“Your dedicated advisor will work closely with you to design a portfolio that will meet your individual wealth and investment goals.”

However, Advisory is not just for the highly experienced or retired investor. Increasingly, the next generation are also looking to use this service or they act as a party to their parents’ accounts as they build up their own wealth and experience and, in some cases, begin to take control of family assets.

Ultimately your advisory portfolio will be tailored to your needs, experience and understanding.

If you think our Advisory service could be for you and would like to find out more information, or to set up an initial meeting, please email or call one of the Advisory team.

Absence and fondness

I saw an Instagram reel the other day where the aspiring parentinfluencing content creator claimed that holidays aren’t holidays once you have children; you just spend time looking after your kids in a different location. I suppose that’s true, to an extent. Regardless, like many islanders with children, we hot-foot it onto a ferry or plane at half term to make use of those precious moments away from the school run. I’m finishing up this edition while being asked what’s for dinner, but in France. Magnifique.

Being able to work while you’re away is both a blessing and a curse. My wife will tell you that it means you never really relax, but I like to think of it as enabling me to professionally have my cake and eat it. Sure, it means chasing up content for whatever publication or project I’m in the middle of while trying to organise a fun-filled holiday day, but being away from the island provides valuable context and perspective. I’ve always secretly derided people who complain about having to ‘get off the rock’, as I’ve always felt Jersey is such an amazing place. I’m proud to call it home, and I felt a desperation to leave, which in some way diminished it. The benefit of context isn’t lost on me, but what they say about absence and fondness does, for the most part, ring true.

This month we feature the work of two talented new contributors, the first of whom is also making these considerations. Emma Pallent moved to Hong Kong on impulse but has been ably assisting us as a staff writer this month, ahead of a potential return to the island. You can see Emma’s work throughout the issue and learn about her on page 18. Emma’s feature was designed by a recent graduate in Graphic Communication, Jasmin Blair, who is back in Jersey taking stock as she considers her next career move. As with many students who return home after Uni, it’s that moment of deciding whether now is the time to make the island home, or whether the lure of the rest of the planet is still calling. With her excellent portfolio, we’re looking forward to featuring her work, wherever she chooses to base herself.

We feature our usual gallery of interesting islanders throughout this edition; all are passionately island-focused, and many bring a wealth of talent acquired over a career travelling the globe. Ultimately, it’s great to get away, but it’s always great to come back, and seeing skilled people bring worldly experience and skills home is brilliant to observe and share with you. I hope you enjoy it.

I PACKED UP MY LIFE ON AN IMPULSE AND MOVED TO HONG KONG; REFLECTIONS FROM A GRADUATE TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT.

Moving to Hong Kong was the most reckless decision I’ve made to date. Arguably, since I had just graduated from university, there had not been much wiggle room for drastic error up until that point. Sheltered in the cosiness of the UK education system, I was never far away from family, friends, or a reliable mentor ready to give me advice. All this changed when I left my bubble of boredom to explore the ‘city of contrasts’ where ‘East meets West’. I was disillusioned with quiet island life, and this shiny new plan was one that promised I would be far away from home. The move was a heavily romanticised idea, and before I knew it, I was hooked.

I was never actually meant to be going to Hong Kong. The post-uni plan for the past two years had been to spend half a year volunteering in New Zealand. This plan was deemed safe by my parents, who saw the place as a brighter UK on the other side of the world. However, after working the summer under the sun, I decided that the meaning of life was simply to enjoy it and have fun. Suddenly, slogging it out to help some poor people became a lot less enticing. So when the sun began to distance itself from my slice of paradise in the Channel Islands, my mind began to devise an escape route. My best friend from uni had secured a corporate job in Hong Kong, and I had previously booked my flights to New Zealand with a long layover

18 TRAVEL

in the city to see her. I’m not really sure when the idea of me joining her permanently moved from a vague idea to a concrete reality. All I know is that within a month I had moved my flight to Hong Kong forward, found a flat, secured a visa with employment and gained a TEFL qualification. It happened so quickly that I hardly registered I’d moved halfway across the world by the time my plane landed in Hong Kong airport. I was in such a rush to be anywhere but home that I had spontaneously committed to living for a year in a country totally different to the one I had originally planned to go to and in a continent I had never travelled to before. I remember people looking at me a certain way when I told them I was going, like I was doing this strange thing that they would never do. And I remember being confused, because I didn’t think it was a big deal at all. And this was because I quite literally hadn’t thought about what I was doing. At all.

Usually, when jumping into my ill-thought through plans, I had faced cold-water shock from being plunged into the consequences of my spontaneity. However, this was a whim that shocked me with how little it shocked me. Despite the horrific humidity, the place

felt entirely comfortable. It actually felt like the city was home, and the prevailing feeling I remember is one of relief. In some ways, it was relief that I hadn’t regretted my decision, but mostly it was relief that I was finally far away from home. For the past few months I had felt desperately in need of space- space to think, to breathe, and to be my authentic self away from a community who saw me under the veil of past versions of me. It was an itch I had scratched by running halfway across the world to a place where no one - bar one person - knew me. And truly, in those first few days, I felt overwhelmingly free.

This euphoria turned out to be short-lived. Space evolved into loneliness and the city that had given me a sense of freedom now served me a platter of difficulty and entrapment. I quite literally disdained being a kindergarten teacher, and the job that I had thought would be a doddle actually turned out to be the hardest job I had ever done. I had no idea how to discipline kids

@GALLERYMAGAZINE 19 TRAVEL

(nor myself, for that matter), and could not communicate with any of the other Cantonese teachers in the classroom. I was launched into the role without any training or guidance, and I remember being told the topic of an English lesson seconds before I was to deliver it. Literally sweating from adrenaline, I stood in front of a classroom of three year old’s who stared blankly at me as I tried to get them to phonetically pronounce the letter ‘h’. It was an absolute nightmare, and a day was considered a success if the kids had not broken any classroom furniture or physically attacked one another. I awkwardly sung nursery rhymes at children, whilst their parents tried desperately to get them to participate.

I made every professional mistake a teacher can make in front of parents, carers and colleagues. I was in such a fluster one day on a field trip that I accidentally led a whole group of parents and students to a peacock enclosure when they had asked me to help them find the rabbits. I didn’t even realise my mistake until the headteacher came over to me and asked whether I knew what a peacock was. Panicking, I pretended I had never seen the exotic animal before, and completely ditched my group to feel dejected under some shade.

Those first few weeks of work felt like an eternity, and I found myself desperately wishing to be back where I had come from. I debated handing in my notice multiple times, but with no money and rent to pay I wasn’t in the financial position to risk a period of unemployment. My notice period was two months, and on days where I felt like bolting, this seemed like an eternity. It was the first time in my life where I had signed contracts and legally committed myself to things I couldn’t just run away from. Used to working under the obligation of zero hours, my salaried job felt like a prison of responsibility, and this burden made me feel miserable and trapped. I still loved Hong Kong, and was totally inspired by the culture of the place. But my job rarely gave me more than one day off a week, and I found most of my time passed in windowless classrooms with screaming, uncontrollable kids.

It turned out that the place where I’d run to avoid difficulty was the place I was forced to confront it. The funny thing is, looking back, I am so grateful that I found it so hard. Being trapped in a situation I wanted nothing but to escape from forced me to adapt and change. I had to grow up in a situation that felt much bigger than myself, and if I hadn’t experienced this struggle, I never would have known the fulfilment that came with overcoming it. As the days went on I realised I was beginning to love the kids that I initially found frustrating, and learnt that the difficult

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 20

ones were only acting up due to a lack of affection. I discovered that the kids became much more disciplined when they were given attention rather than detention, and my classroom warmed as I grew alongside the children. I learnt to trust my instincts, and that honesty and compassion could get me through most of the trials I faced from day to day. I began to love my work, not because I found it enjoyable, but because I found it fulfilling. I saw that I was really making a difference in these tiny people’s lives, and my heart felt light when I saw their little faces light up at the school doors in the morning. I was glad that my classroom had become a place they could feel safe and loved away from home, facilitating an environment where they could practise showing kindness to one another.

I knew that I was their teacher, but there were times when it felt like the kids had taught me. Over time, the job got easier, and I felt the burden of my employment lifting as I went further into my comfort zone. But the initial relief I felt from this improvement was shortlived, and compensated by an unexpected sadness. In the absence of an everyday trial, a hurdle I could tunnel vision on, I was forced to look around and observe my reality. I was thousands of miles away from home, with only one long-term friend. I now valued personal development over personal enjoyment, and felt like I was drifting in a career I did not aspire to. After training myself to face difficulty straight on, I became passionate about pursuing my real dream of being a writer. However, I was stuck in a country that rapidly required suitable candidates to have

proficiency in both written Mandarin and Cantonese. Having neither of these skills, doors were shut on me before I even had the chance to introduce myself. I slowly faced the realisation that aside from the best friend I came with, there was no reason for me being in Hong Kong anymore. In addition to this, I craved the company of the friends and family I’d left behind. I missed people I had never particularly liked, and no longer felt an aversion to those

I previously needed ‘space’ from. It was the absences around me that made me realise how lucky I was to have had what I had, and my time left in Hong Kong stretched out in front of me like a looming prison sentence. On top of all this, I felt like I had failed, and was too ashamed to tell people how lonely I was. It all seemed like one big mistake, an impulse that had evolved into disaster, a giant web I couldn’t untangle myself from.

But it wasn’t a mistake. Yes, it was reckless. Yes, it’s not an easy situation to get out of. And yes, the consequences have been really difficult. If I had not had a best friend to cry and drink cheap cabernet with I can confidently say it would have been unbearable. But if I had the choice again, knowing what I know now, I’d still put myself through hell in a heartbeat. Screaming children and all. Life chucked me overboard and into the storm, but with stinging eyes and a mouthful of seawater I managed to emerge above the surface. To have had the opportunity to get everything wrong, learn from it, and come out a different person is a privilege I’m extremely grateful for. And so ironically, the place I ran away to has led me back to where I came from - home, at least for a little while.

I SAW THAT I WAS REALLY MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THESE TINY PEOPLE'S LIVES, AND MY HEART FELT

LIGHT WHEN I SAW THEIR LITTLE FACES LIGHT UP AT THE SCHOOL DOORS IN THE MORNING.

WILD LIFE

After hearing that she’d gotten the role of Fundraiser and Events Coordinator at the JSPCA, Sophie Quinlan “quite literally danced” back to her car. This outburst of unquenchable joy was attributed to the way the job catered to all her passions: animals, writing, and organising events.

Sophie had always wanted to work with the JSPCA, but at the age of fourteen, she realised volunteer opportunities were few and far between - waiting lists were endless due to the organisation’s popularity. So when Sophie was offered the opportunity to join the staff team at her “longtime favourite charity” , she leapt at it. On the day to day, she manages the JSPCA’s media, events and fundraising aspects, working towards building a better world for animals and humans alike.

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 22

Did you even grow up outside the city if you didn’t tryand fail - to save a baby bird at least once? For my fellow souls with a slight saviour complex, there is nothing worse than the wracking guilt that accompanies the tragedy of good intentions gone wrong. The unfortunate turn of events that had brought me face to face with mortality spiralled me into a pit of shame and overall helplessness. Marinating in my puddle of pity, I actually sent myself to my bedroom to ‘think carefully about what I had done’. The whole ideal was a catastrophic eyesore plastered across the scenes of an otherwise idyllic childhood.

Luckily for us, Sophie and her team at the JSPCA have dedicated their time to actually saving the baby animals we can only strive to protect. Their work sends cuddly creatures hopping and healthy back to the wild, with the added benefit of helping islanders avoid any unnecessary childhood trauma. Their wildlife rehabilitation programme saves everything from bunnies to birds, and it is this element of the JSPCA that Sophie finds the most rewarding.

“We get so many wildlife animals that come in, some in worse condition than others, and to watch the team nurture the animals - sometimes taking very young ones home - and then see them go back out into their natural habitat, is a real joy.”

When Sophie brought up the topic of rescuing baby animals, she coincidentally mentioned that “birds in particular can be tricky as they need feeding from dawn until dusk - as their mothers would in the wild”. Feeling slightly relieved from the burden of my guilt, I came to understand that this “painstaking process” applies to mostly all baby animals. This is a fact JSPCA staff are familiar with, and have recently witnessed firsthand after saving a nest of baby bunnies.

“Baby bunnies can become attached to you and think of you as their mum, and our amazing staff have to ignore their own bonds that they’ve made in order to ensure that when their rabbit goes back out into the wild, it is not reliant on humans for a food source or space of safety.”

“It was magical to watch these gorgeous rabbits grow, and all too soon it was time to release them into their natural habitat.”

“This part of the process fills me with a huge sense of pride for what we do, and complete admiration for the people I get to work with every day.”

“As one of Jersey’s only animal welfare charities, we have to act as a voice for the voiceless and protect those that aren’t protected enough by the law”.

The JSPCA boasts a culture of hard-working, passionate staff, with Sophie noting that it is unlike anywhere she has ever worked before.

“No one works here for the money, it’s that deep-rooted love and passion for animals that drives the staff, who work together in a way I have never experienced before. The level of teamwork that is shown here is incredible. If you’re an animal lover and need to see others exert the same passion, the JSPCA is the place to be.”

Sophie added to this, boldly stating “I don’t think you’ll find another place on the island where everyone shares one purpose and executes it fiercely.”

A big part of Sophie’s role is organising fundraisers and events, allowing Jersey’s animal lovers to get their fix whilst supporting a charity close to their hearts. She has recently introduced ‘Cuddle Puddle’ events, where small groups can come into the JSPCA and give love and hugs to all sorts of creatures. For those who prefer large-scale events, Sophie coordinates all sorts. These include, but are not limited to: jazz and dancing events, murder mystery dinners, quizzes, bingo nights and themed balls. These events are frequently uploaded on the JSPCA’s Facebook page, Instagram and website, which contain all the details surrounding how to get involved.

We get so many wildlife animals that come in, some in worse condition than others, and to watch the team nurture the animals - sometimes taking very young ones home - and then see them go back out into their natural habitat, is a real joy.” “

For those eager to support Sophie and her team, there are opportunities to become a member of the JSPCA by making monthly donations. You can also join their 100 club and pay just £24 a year to be added into 12 different prize draws. If you are desperate for a furry friend, but can’t have an animal at home, the JSPCA has a sponsorship scheme in the works. This allows you to provide for one of the animals at the shelter, while receiving monthly updates including stories, pictures, what they’ve been up to and “so much more”.

When discussing the exciting future ahead of Sophie and the JSPCA, she remarked, “We’re so excited to show the public the great things we’ve got brewing”. It is only with the “continued support” of the community that the charity “will be able to bring all these dreams to fruition”.

Her work champions the strong female archetype, and her current project, ‘Guess Who’, is a feature film imagining an authentic Katherine Hepburn transposed into a fictional setting in Jersey. Her newest play, Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, follows a lonely but formidable widow in search of a dance partner and is set in a 2008 Florida condo with a backdrop of fabulous sunsets.

When envisioning the perfect dance partner for the widow of a Southern Baptist minister, you’d be forgiven for overlooking a “passive aggressive queen with a bad attitude”. However, Six Dance Lessons in Six Days watches oil and water mix as Lily Harrison (Tessa Coleman) and Michael Minetti (Lee White) dance from ‘initial antagonism to profound compatibility’. In addition to this fabulous plotline, the production promises ‘a merry dance through the ballroom canon of Swing, Tango, Waltz and more’.

The play by Richard Alfieri is an international hit, and in our local production Tessa is the star of the show. Dubbed as a play that is “thoughtful, razor sharp, funny and genuinely moving”, it should not be surprising that Six Dance Lessons in Six Days has lit up the stage in 24 countries and in 14 languages. This “smart, funny and moving look at the nature of friendship” is choreographed by local dancer Rachel Ann Hones, and is a ‘witty and beguiling two hander’ ready to cater to any audience’s desires. Tessa comments that the play has “something for everyone”, being filled to the brim with comedy, drama, music and dance. It truly is a production that caters to those of "all tastes”.

Lily Harrison is not the only headstrong woman lying at the heart of Tessa’s work. She is also currently working on a feature film centring on Katherine Hepburn - a selfprofessed hero of Tessa’s - as well as a BBC radio series on Lillie Langtry. When I asked Tessa why she is drawn to such strong, female characters, she revealed the root of this lies in personal admiration.

“The people I am playing, I always admire… it’s great to be able to delve into their lives to find out what made them tick, hopefully doing them justice”.

This is not a challenge that Tessa approaches lightheatedly. She has dedicated her life to these women, testified to by her publishing of ‘Lily the Legend’, a book about Lillie Langtry. For Tessa, Lillie and herself “have quite a story”, and the female figure has always had a presence in her life.

Words: Emma Pallent Photography: Danny Evazns

“I was brought up with Lillie Langtry, because she was an actress and I was always interested in acting… I used to go to the museum where they had all her furniture on display, which she left to them after she died… I knew an awful lot about Lillie from an early age”

She took this information into her adulthood, writing a TV documentary and stage play as well as her radio series and book. Tessa champions Lillie as more than “the epitome of pre-Raphaelite beauty”, drawing attention to her influence over individuals such as Oscar Wilde. Without the muse of Lillie, the playwright couldn’t have written ‘A Woman of No Importance’, which is heavily inspired by Langtry and her life.

In her book ‘Lily the Legend’, Tessa writes about a life characterised by ‘incident and more than a little scandal’, drawing attention to Lillie's status as a “leader of society”. She defends the actress from false perceptions that she was just “a high class courtesan and mistress to the Prince of Wales”.

“There was a lot more to her, and the great thing about her for me, was that she was this muse, and inspiration”.

The people I am playing, I always admire… it’s great to be able to delve into their lives to find out what made them tick, hopefully doing them justice”. “

Just like the women of her work, Tessa is also an inspiration. She has spent a lifetime wholeheartedly pursuing what she loves, and has found a way to give back whilst doing it. TC Productions has supported many charities since it was formed in 2011, raising over £100,000 in donations through ticket sales to her shows.

When asked whether this was the driving force behind her work, Tessa remarked, “I love what I do, but I also want to give back… it’s my way of donating to charity, I suppose”.

Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks will be shown at the Arts Centre, April 16th - 20th, and you can call 700444 to book a ticket. All money raised from sales will be donated to Age Concern and Brighter Futures, two local charities that together provide support for those of all ages in Jersey.

Sam Carvosso’s ‘Lost’

Ahoy

The Land and Us | La Tèrre et Nous is an exhibition of newly commissioned artworks exploring our relationship to the land. Jersey and UK artists are responding to a call for us all to reconnect, prioritise and protect the Island’s precious natural ecosystem.

This family friendly exhibition guides viewers through artworks exploring Jersey’s past, present and future habitation of the local land, through textiles, poetry, sculpture, installation and photography. Travelling from our ancient neolithic past, when the land was a sacred site of ritual, through our farming traditions, oral histories and earthly language of Jèrriais, to our woodlands, indigenous species and pathways that encircle the Island, The Land and Us is a place to gather and reflect on the natural world.

Developed by ArtHouse Jersey in collaboration with local artist Alexander Mourant, alongside partner artists, Hannah Fletcher, Remi Graves, Alice Burnhope and Sam Carvosso. This exhibition is a culmination of a year-long learning programme that took place at ArtHouse Jersey and community centres across the Island, working with a diverse cross section of the Island’s population.

Meet the artists

Alexander Mourant

Alexander Mourant is a Jersey born artist, educator, curator and writer based in London. He is a Lecturer in Photography at Kingston University. His practice and research centres on photography, writing, performance and sculpture, with a particular interest in the legacies of agriculture, Land Art and Arte Povera. Alexander ran an experimental sensory drawing workshop with EYECAN which culminated in a large collaborative collage on display within the exhibition. The artist then developed a new touch artwork, A Tree Draws, where segments of the collaborative collage were etched into wood from a tree felled in Jersey due to natural causes. You are invited to touch and feel the sounds, memories and journeys of nature. For the exhibition, Alexander has created a new sculpture, An Image That Holds Its Heat. The artwork abstracts an original photograph depicting the effects of the weather upon a tomato crop (September, 1963), courtesy of the Jersey Evening Post Collection at Jersey Archive. This ghostly structure takes the form of a Victorian cloche used for protecting and growing vegetables, and questions the legacy and future of farming in Jersey.

Remi Graves

Remi Graves is a London based poet and drummer. A former Barbican Young Poet, their work has been featured on BBC Radio 4, at St Paul's Cathedral and in various anthologies. Remi’s debut pamphlet with your chest was published in 2022 by fourteen poems. Remi’s commissioned poem, a well worn path, was inspired both by their walks in Jersey and the change in seasons, both weather wise and socio-politically. A well worn path charts both the beauty of our natural world whilst not oblivious to the harshness, grief and violence also present there. For The Land & Us | La Tèrre et Nous Remi’s workshops centred around a shared experience of a walk in Greve de Lecq woods led by creative exercises that leant on sensory experiences, memories, and an invitation to listen to one's surroundings. Thanks to the various languages in the room and openness of participants, the exhibition features two collaborative multilingual poems in English, Jerriais, Tagalog and Zulu as well as a collection of individual poems featured within a book.

Meet the artists

Alice Burnhope

Alice Burnhope is an awardwinning textile artist and educator. Specialising in sociallyengaged artwork, Alice collaborates with the public to co-create immersive installations, sculpture and wearable art, fostering their wellbeing and deepening their connection to nature.

Stone upon Stone is a large soft interactive sculpture made in collaboration with a diversity of six community groups where Alice ran natural dye and embroidery workshops onto waste fabrics with opportunities for people to come together and learn new skills. The final colours and forms are inspired by Alice’s passion and observations of Jersey’s geology and the many dolmens across the island that she visited. Stone upon Stone is interactive and invites people to go back 6000 years and become ourneolithic ancestors through building and recreating their own dolmen.

Hannah Fletcher

Hannah

Fletcher is an artist primarily working with photographic materials, matter and methods. She is the founder of Sustainable Darkroom, a not-for-profit dedicated to creating a more ecological future for photography. For The Land & Us | La Tèrre et Nous Hannah worked with Hautlieu school students and local land and sea foragers and growers to gather and create work from Jersey’s land. A Moment Of Gathering, is an installation tablecloth and sound piece which looks into Jersey’s cultural usages and relationship with Vraic to consider wider dynamics between sea, land, farming and foraging on the Island. You are invited to sit at the table to study local specimens and to listen and engage in the dialogue around the table.

Sam Carvosso

Sam Carvosso is an artist working across sculpture, drawing, video, and installation with a research-led focus. Informed by trips to National Parks, nature reserves and forests, his practice considers the creation and perception of landscape, with a particular interest in wild spaces.

His artwork Jersey Coastal Path is a reflection of his time spent in the landscape during a five day residency and hike observing, listening, recording, writing and making temporary artworks in the landscape such as sundials. You can follow his journey in a pathway installation throughout the gallery with a series of sculptures developed from his observations. This includes moss and plaster sculptures where he worked with Highlands Arts School to cast directly from nature and a sun-dial influenced by a temporal artwork created with Youthful Minds. A PAPER ARTIST IN PROGRESS: Layla Arthur

We’ve enjoyed witnessing the career of paper artist Layla May Arthur. We’ve featured her paper-cutting work in Gallery before, and it’s fantastic to have seen her skills and career progress since we first met her as a placement student at Gallery in 2016!

Relying on technique and attention to detail, Layla cuts elaborate patterns and entices sculptural forms from the paper. She aspires to leave her audience both fascinated with the craftsmanship of the paper piece and the story behind it.

Layla’s practice explores how paper changes appearance under the influence of light. Playing with which parts of the paper to cut away and which parts to leave, her work projects theatrical shadows onto the audience and its surrounding. The light and shadows sculpt the space allowing the audience to experience the paper, placing them and their interpretations literally within the work. A Paper Artist in Progress, combines three series of work; Jersey; My Childhood Home (2019), the Storyteller, the Listener and our Story (2021) and Unfolded (2023-2024). All of the works are inspired by stories and in each the paper is manipulated differently, as Layla continues to develop new techniques. A newly commissioned sound composition has been created by Jersey composer Christina Orchard as part of the exhibition.

Layla’s paper works have been exhibited internationally including museums in Switzerland, Italy, Denmark and several in America and the Netherlands. In 2023, She received the prestigious Dutch Mondriaan Fund for young artists.

Ariel Luke

Ariel is a multi-faceted artist with a rich and diverse background. Her artistic endeavours extend far beyond the borders of Jersey, as she showcases her works in international hubs such as Sydney, Bahrain, Hong Kong, and New York.

Ariel studied at Wimbledon School of Art, where she was also editor of the art school magazine. She then exhibited with her young contemporaries at the Royal Academy and at other venues in London. For the next decade, she concentrated mainly on screen printing and showing at several galleries in London, but principally at the Lumley Cazalet Gallery, where she had a one-man show in 1998. She also showed her work in Sydney, Bahrain, Hong Kong, and New York.

Ariel was introduced to screen printing at art school, but soon set up a press at her home and, over a period of years, would deliver work to galleries on an almost regular basis, every 2 weeks.

In 1984, she was commissioned to paint her first house or garden, and since that time, she has completed over 100 pictures of this genre in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, France, and Italy. She has exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show and at Courson, near Paris. Amongst the better known are paintings of Glydebourne, Garsington, Stowell Park, and Bledlow Manor, as well as some intricate and charming London gardens.

Her medium is tempera on gesso. A style of painting she was attracted to when copying a 14th-century Italian painting at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. When undertaking a commission, Ariel would meet with you and discuss the elements and details of your house or garden that bring you the most joy, so that the piece can convey the special areas where your friends and family use most, as well as the plants that are important to you, perhaps that you have planted or have watched grow.

Ariel also specialises in oil portraits; these can be done by visiting Jaro Gallery for a sitting in their portrait studio. This delightfully therapeutic practice allows Ariel to capture a bit of your personality. Children are often painted from a favourite photo taken of a special moment.

A sense of belonging

Everyone loves free entry and a discount, not to mention the feeling they’re the first in the know – why wouldn’t you sign yourself up to a special club with all these benefits and more!

Combined with access to a host of stories and facts about Jersey’s incredible history – which considering the Island’s small size, packs a mighty punch – this is what is on offer with a Jersey Heritage Membership. If you’re not a heritage buff, you might dismiss a Membership out of hand, thinking that it’s not for you. But the Island’s history is all around you; in the places you go to eat, drink and socialise, the attractions you visit with your children, the environment in which you work, and perhaps even the home you live in. Once you begin to discover the story behind that building you pass every day or that Jersey saying you keep hearing, you’ll wonder why you didn’t become a Member sooner.

If you do sign up for a Membership, you’ll be joining more than 17,500 people who have done the same. As valued supporters of our work to protect and promote the Island’s story, we’re always looking for ways to ensure our Members feel like they belong to a special family, who, like us, love Jersey and the history and culture that have made it the Island it is today.

A Membership gives you free access to all the Jersey Heritage visitor sites, which includes the two castles, Elizabeth and Mont Orgueil, La Hougue Bie, Hamptonne Country Life Museum, the Maritime Museum and Jersey Museum, Art Gallery & Victorian House. The beauty of free access is that you can rock up at any of these sites whenever the fancy takes you, whether you’ve got plenty of time on your hands to explore, or a brief period to fill.

For example, if you work in Town, you can leave the office behind, jump on the Ferry and take the short journey to Elizabeth Castle during your lunch hour. You’ll enjoy some fresh sea air and can sit and eat your sandwiches

on the Castle Green with a spectacular view, or head to the café to grab a coffee and some cake. Or if you’re looking to up your step count at the weekend, head to Mont Orgueil Castle and bound up almost 200 steps to the top – if that doesn’t take your breath away, then the view will!

The free Wi-Fi at our sites also means you can stay connected for work while you enjoy a change of scenery, opening your laptop in front of a glorious sea view, a peaceful countryside meadow or a pretty town courtyard.

A Membership comes with two free guest passes each year, which gives you the opportunity to bring along friends, colleagues or family members on a visit, and don’t forget that children under the age of six always go free.

You’re also eligible for a series of discounts, including 10% off some site cafes, 10% off venue hire and up to 20% off bookings for the unique Heritage Lets. On top of all of that, there are also regular, exclusive events held for Members throughout the year, whether you’d like to enjoy crafting with your kids, or join your mates to listen to a lunchtime talk.

JAMIE HOOKER AND LUCY DAVIS

DANDY

Genuine Jersey Member Dandy, owned by Jamie Hooker and Lucy Davis, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Some of you will remember the early days, when getting a loaf of bread was like winning the lottery. Back then, they were cosy little place where you could enjoy the island’s first taste of how coffee would be served in the flat white mecca of Australia. Now you’ll find their loaves (and other delicious treats) in one of two locations and on the plates and shelves of a number of island shops and restaurants.

For those who don’t know who Dandy is, can you tell us a little bit about you?

We opened our original shop on Conway Street 10 years ago this year. We opened with a focus on service and quality across all facets of our business, this required control led to us creating everything in house and has seen us evolve into the bakery we are today.

Where did the name come from?

The Jersey Herd Book was created in 1866. It’s the foundation on which the Jersey Breed is based both in Jersey and worldwide; every single Jersey in the world can trace their origins back to this directory. The first written record in the Jersey Herd book was a bull named Dandy. Dandy was the start of a new standard, one that set the bar high. Which is why it was the natural choice for us when choosing our name back in 2014.

Tell us all about your Genuine Jersey products? Most of what we serve, we make ourselves from scratch with Sourdough being our most popular in house product. We also collaborate when we get the chance with other local businesses such as Awabi (Szechuan Chocolate Ganache Tart), fellow Genuine Jersey Member Jon Hackett at Brooklands Farm (Sausage Rolls) and The Hideout (Breakfast Wrap).

We’d love to know something about your business that nobody else knows?

Lucy and I aren’t actually a couple, something which most of our customers possibly think!

Where can we find you and buy your Genuine Jersey products?

At our two locations in town (Conway Street or Colomberie) or served in Upstairs at Anley, La Bouche, Sangria, Dunell’s and Les Ormes or on weekends you can buy loaves from Scoop, Seahorse, and Midland Stores and we’re always adding others too.

Where do you get your inspiration from for new products?

As a team we all love food and eating so are always looking for new things to try. We are extremely passionate about what ends up on our shelves which means we are always sampling and resampling to ensure everything is perfect (which is super dangerous).

Baking bread sounds like it should be very simple, but sourdough is a different beast. How long does it take to make a loaf?

Bread can be very simple, and most of what you find on the supermarket shelf is full of additives to make it very simple on a large scale. Our recipe is very simple (flour, salt, and water), but to achieve the end result is a science that sees each loaf take 18 hours from being three raw ingredients to a final baked loaf. It’s a labour of love and takes a huge amount of discipline and skill to master. There are numerous variables that have an impact on the end product, something we are very proud to have mastered.

Anything coming up we should know about?

2024 will see us celebrate our 10th year. We have diversified multiple times throughout the years, and 2024/25 will be the largest adjustments to the business we have ever seen.

Invest in a beautiful future

Set within a private country courtyard, overlooking rolling fields and flowers, the award-winning Beauty House, St Mary is celebrating a very special anniversary. Founded in 2004 by industry expert, Sharon Coote the boutique salon is turning 20 in May. Praised by clients for its peaceful surroundings, expert practitioners and bespoke beauty formulas, this luxurious yet welcoming beauty haven offers a true client centred experience.

For beauty lovers, who desire expert treatments away from the hustle and bustle of town, The Beauty House offers a tantalising treatment menu. Organic Botanical Facials, Lycon hot waxing (which we hear is virtually pain free), eyebrow styling, tinting and microblading along with eyeliner tattoo, cocoa chocolate body wraps and luxury pedicures to name but a few.

In celebration of turning 20 and listening to the needs of clients The Beauty House has sourced one of the most effective anti ageing systems on the market today, the RF Micro-Needling system Sylfirm X.

“Sharon has looked after my skin for the past 5 years, her knowledge in keeping skin healthy and looking its best is second to none. Sylfirm X is the icing on the cake, My skin looks better today than it did 10 years ago!” Wendy Pinel, current client.

If you want to be pampered, invest in your skin, or if you want high value beauty maintenance this salon has it all.

INTRODUCING SYLFIRM X

What is Sylfirm X?

A revolutionary skin treatment which combines two modalities, Microneedling and RF (radiofrequency). Together they work effectively to target abnormal vessels and pigmentation as well as stimulating the production of collagen. A robotic system ensures the precise application of the gold tipped uninsulated electrodes, this allows for a more effective and precise treatment without the downtime or pain of other RF Microneeding systems. It is the first and only FDAcleared device of its kind to be multipurpose targeting both vascular and pigmented lesions along with laxity, fine lines, acne, pores and skin rejuvenation.

What is Sylfirm X used for?

Facial and body rejuvenation, skin tightening and lifting, scarring, stretch marks, as well as pigmented and vascular lesions, melasma, rosacea and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Sylfirm X’s ability for treating skin with melasma is a major advantage over other RF Microneedling devices on the market. Melasma a stubborn pigmentation which is persistent and difficult to treat and can be made worse by aggressive treatments.

Another advantage over Sylfirm x’s competitors is the ability to treat the eye area tightening loose or sagging skin. Sharon explains “We have seen incredible results in the eye area, tightening the skin can reduce the appearance of bags and hooded lids.  If you are considering surgery this is definitely worth investigating first.”

How many treatments do I need?

Results can be seen from a single treatment but for best results a series of between 3 - 6 treatments are recommended, 2 to 6 weeks apart depending on individual needs.

Is it suitable for all skin types?

Sylfirm X is suitable for all skin types and ethnicities.

What is the downtime with Sylfirm X?

You can expect little to no downtime with Sylfirm X. Some flushing may occur but generally subsides within a couple of hours and you should be able to carry on with daily activities as normal. It is advisable not to wear make-up, avoid strenuous activity, sweating or sun exposure for 24hrs after treatment and always wear an SPF during the day.

SELF CONSCIOUS ABOUT YOUR LEGS?

Last year Jersey was the sunniest place in the British Isles with a daily average of 6.5 hours sunlight, and 2024 is likely to be a repeat performance! It’s always a pleasure to dust off the summer shorts or skirt, and makes those 10,000 steps a day much more comfortable as well as boosting your vitamin D levels.

However, some islanders are frustrated or self-conscious by the presence of thread or varicose veins on their calves or ankles, and they continue to wear longer clothing or even avoid the pool or beach. Whilst it’s worth pointing out that these veins are usually benign and will not cause lasting damage, we provide a quick list of treatments for those who seek some improvement.

AT HOME

Camouflage creams like NYX Professional Makeup

Useful for temporary cover of a small light blemish or collection of veins.

ON THE HIGH STREET

Laser or light therapy

Can be useful for the fine red or spider veins seen on the nose or face. However, leg veins may be darker and more widespread so the results from these types of laser are variable and it may need to be repeated, particularly if there are large feeding veins underneath. The heating effect of laser can be sore and sun exposure is usually prohibited for a couple of weeks afterwards.

THE SPECIALIST

Micro or foam sclerotherapy

This is the treatment we prefer and it involves an injection into the veins to permanently seal them off, solving the problem, and improving the appearance of your legs once again! The technique can be used across wide areas of discolouration and, with ultrasound guidance, we can also treat large feeding or varicose veins in the same visit. As Vascular Surgeons, we are experienced in dealing with both small and larger leg veins, including keyhole surgery if needed. Clients can expect possible bruising and will need to wear a stocking for about a week, but they are freely mobile.

The telephone, the bicycle, stamps, electricity, lightbulbs, cars — there are many things we have to thank the Victorians for; it was a golden age of development. Around that time, when very smart people in elaborate clothing were progressing the development of mankind, there were also architects and homebuilders who tasked themselves with building enduring, attractive, well-proportioned residences for these masters of industry. Le Chalet is such a home.

Built with elegance, the home also holds a Grade 2 listing of historical and architectural importance. Designed by prominent Jersey architect Adolphus Curry, who designed Jersey College for Girls and a number of other prominent buildings in St. Helier, Le Chalet has been lovingly renovated and cared for by the current owners for over thirty years. This is an outstanding example of a substantial late Victorian seaside villa in beautiful condition.

Set back and elevated, the property commands panoramic views across St. Clement’s Bay and is surrounded by greenery and agricultural land to the rear. You can enjoy beautiful and ever-changing views from every point of the property. The beautiful southeast coast is pretty at high and low tide, with a sandy beach and rockpools to explore, perfect for early morning beach walks and sea swims.

The elegant principal bedroom has a triple aspect where you can lie in bed and watch the sun or moon rising over the east coast. The dressing room has plumbing all ready if the new owners wish to make this a principal bedroom suite. There are two further double bedrooms, a house bathroom, and a cloakroom on this level. Outside there is a south-facing walled garden, and to the side and rear is a private sheltered garden. Across the road, Le Chalet owns the land on the beach side, which can be landscaped and a chalet added (Le Chalet’s chalet) or ideal to store sporting equipment for quick and easy jaunts out onto the water.

To the side of the property, there is ample parking for five cars plus a single garage. The other side of the driveway borders rolling coastal fields. The co-op at Pontac and M & S are approximately five minutes away. The best bus route, No. 1, is at the end of the drive and will take you to town every 15 minutes, or take the bus to Gorey Harbour with its array of great restaurants. Le Chalet sits within the catchment area for St. Christophers, St. Clement and Le Rocquier schools.

Patek Phillippe famously say you don’t own their watches, but just look after them for the next generation. Le Chalet feels a little like that, a piece of history that would make you part of its historic story, while providing a characterful home for your family for generations to come.

Libby Woodward

Audit Assistant, KPMG in the Crown Dependencies

What made you choose to work for KPMG?

From my first interview, I knew that KPMG was a fun and friendly environment. As a Big 4 company, the atmosphere at work is relaxed and collaborative. The open plan office ensures each team member is valued and has access to the partners to ask any important questions. There will also be opportunity to travel on international secondment to any KPMG office around the world once I have become a qualified accountant. This made the firm an obvious choice as I have always wanted to work around the world.

What professional training have you done?

As of writing, I have completed 8 out of 13 exams towards my ACCA qualification. KPMG provides an excellent support system for trainees studying to qualify as an accountant. These include paid study leave, training courses and extra support sessions with our tutors at BPP. I hope to also complete a degree in Applied Accounting with Oxford Brookes University, which is offered through the ACCA exam pathway. This was particularly important to me as a school leaver, and KPMG actively support us throughout this process.

What do you do on an average day?

Each day varies at KPMG. You can work with different teams on different projects, and have direct contact with the client. Day-to-day work involves responding to emails and having meetings with clients, hot reviews, and completing working papers – alongside the odd game of pool! At KPMG, there are also lots of social activities to get involved in such as basketball, bowling, pottery painting and speed quizzing. So I am never bored!

What is your next step?

My next step is to become a member of ACCA within the next couple of years. Then I hope to go on international secondment to the United States once I complete my professional qualification. KPMG offer various opportunities to be seconded to different offices around the world once qualified – or even in different departments internally such as Advisory, Tax, or the Strategy Group.

What advice would you give yourself as a student considering the experience you have now?

Say yes to more! Each opportunity to learn and develop early on in your career will be invaluable for future endeavours.

Niall Parkinson

Recovery & Reorganisation Associate, Grant Thornton

What made you choose to work for Grant Thornton?

There is an excellent team of people and support mechanisms throughout the firm. A lot of companies are strict on exams but at Grant Thornton there isn’t the same pressure – I am able to study at my own pace. The office provides a dynamic work environment to develop professional skills. There are also many social events and activities to join in with, particularly if you like sport. This was a big factor in my decision to join the company.

What do you do on an average day?

As a Recovery & Reorganisation Associate, I spend a lot of the working day learning new things and developing my skills as an accountant. This can vary from drafting financial statements to site visits. A lot of the work is different from anything I have done before and it is very rare for me to be doing the same thing all day, which is definitely a positive. At the moment I am training for the corporate cup, so this has also become a big part of my routine.

What is your next step?

My next step is passing my first ACCA exam. With workdays and study leave, I am learning how to fit studying in to my daily routine while maintaining a good work-life balance. Luckily, there is plenty of support to help me achieve this.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Look at what area best fits your work style and allow yourself time to adjust to your new situation. I enjoy the work I am doing in the Recovery & Reorganisation team because it is so varied. If it wasn’t I’d find it much more difficult to adapt to my role with the same enthusiasm. I have found working life to be so different from university life – so regardless of what role anyone goes into they should allow time for this adjustment.

What did you want to be when you were 8 years old?

Top Gun was my favourite film when I was 8 so joining the red arrows was my dream job.

Favourite way to relax?

My favourite way to relax would be playing football with my friends. I also like going swimming and spending time in the sauna.

Favourite place to eat in Jersey?

Old Smugglers Inn, in Ouaisne, St. Brelade. They serve great pub food and there is a brilliant atmosphere. I recommend the BBQ ribs or the steak and kidney pie!

Malgorzata Sej

Tax Associate, Grant Thornton

What made you choose to work for Grant Thornton?

Grant Thornton is a well-respected global accounting and advisory firm that offers a range of services to clients across different industries. I knew the company could provide me with opportunities to gain valuable experience, work with talented colleagues, and build my professional network. Grant Thornton is also well known for providing employees with great career development and opportunities, and as a young graduate this was something I was looking for.

64

What do you do on an average day?

I work as a tax associate in the Tax Department. This can be a challenging and rewarding experience for several reasons. On an average day I prepare Jersey and UK personal and corporate tax returns. The tax laws are complex and constantly evolving, which means that there is always something new to learn and explore. This is intellectually stimulating and provides opportunities to develop my technical expertise.

What is your next step?

I am studying towards my ACCA qualification. I am part-qualified with only three exams remaining. My aim is to have one exam left by the end of the year and to develop a deeper understanding of UK and Jersey corporation tax to be able to progress in my career.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

After graduation I felt under so much pressure to find a job. I wish someone told me that just because you receive rejections and it is taking a bit of time to secure a job it does not mean that you failed, it just means you have not found the right job yet. Do not stress too much when you receive a rejection as the right job will eventually come.

Looking for a fulfilling career?

We have exciting career opportunities for graduates and school leavers within our Business Advisory, Tax and Audit teams.

What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? I wanted to be a journalist or a writer. I thought that being able to bring stories to life via words would be an amazing job.

Favourite way to relax?

A long walk whilst listening to music. I love walking home from the office when it is nice and sunny, it makes me feel warm and relaxed after a day at work.

Favourite place to eat in Jersey?

Flour Patisserie, their muffins are incredible! Flour is my go-to breakfast place on the weekends too.

What did you want to be when you were 8 years old?

I've always loved sports, mainly football. I've watched and played it since I can remember so I think naturally, I wanted to be a football player.

Favourite way to relax?

It may not sound relaxing to some, but I think I am most relaxed when I'm training, either for football or athletics. It's just a way I seem to forget about everything else externally and focus on just myself.

Favourite place to eat in Jersey?

I think it has to be the Royal Jersey Golf Course, I've family who are members there and when they do their Sunday roast we always try to go down. It also has a lovely view of Gorey Castle which adds to the time there.

Favourite possession?

It would have to be my watch. It was a birthday present a few years back from my parents so it has sentimental value to me.

Built From the Ground Up

With more than 25 years’ experience in the wealth management industry, UBS Jersey Country Head Tobias Wehrli has worked in Zurich in various leadership roles in Wealth Planning where he was responsible for Europe & Emerging Markets before he became Market Head for Greece and Cyprus across all client segments. As a testament to how you can forge your own path, he shares his secrets on how to set a successful career for yourself.

BUILD AND WORK ON RELATIONSHIPS

Tobias was born in Switzerland and graduated from university with a degree in law, joining UBS in Zurich in 1998 as a Financial Consultant within the Wealth Planning team. He explains, “I was attracted to the industry and wealth management because it’s all about relationships and interactions with people. I find listening to people’s wishes, dreams and needs very interesting. It thrills me to find solutions for clients, as well as helping with my employees’ and colleagues’ issues and concerns.”

LIFE IS A LEARNING JOURNEY

Tobias worked hard to hone his knowledge, and obtained several Masters degrees alongside working, including a Master of Laws in International Tax in Vienna and a Masters in Wealth Management from University of Berne and Rochester. Building upon his skillset has always been a key priority. “I feel it’s important to look at your next steps and professional development,” Tobias says. “We live in an ever-changing world and to keep one’s knowledge level we need to be eager to learn and develop oneself every day. During all my studies, as well as various seminars and courses, it was not only about learning and acquiring knowledge but also about connecting with a myriad of interesting people and characters. They were as important for my career development as the knowledge I gained.”

QUALITIES AND VALUES ARE IMPORTANT

Never shy to face responsibility and leadership, Tobias took on roles which involved having all Wealth Planners in Switzerland – and eventually, all Wealth Planners around the globe except Asia – reporting in to him. “Being a leader is about much more than qualifications and managing people and business,” Tobias reiterates. “I believe in having some strong core values: honesty, which encompasses traits such as integrity, reliability, loyalty, confidence, harmony and trust. Empathy certainly helps (leadership rule No.1 – care for people!), but also, commitment. ‘Committed’ describes how I act, operate and work. If I do something, I do it wholeheartedly; and it contains other important values like passion, energy and motivation. Resilience and persistence are important. Persistence keeps me going and resilience helps me to get back up when I am knocked off course! It describes my attitude and accompanies me in everything I do.”

EXPRESS YOURSELF AND FIND BALANCE

Finally, in 2023, Tobias took a new and exciting step in leading UBS Jersey and found a new style of life which he thoroughly enjoys. “I love island life and Jersey is a great place to live and work. I am very much looking forward to the sailing – it’s my passion, despite coming from a little town in the Swiss mountains and being a keen skier. I used to sail and skipper with my family and friends in the Mediterranean Sea. I am really looking forward to testing the ‘real waters’ around Jersey, with strong tides, rocks, and extreme weather conditions, as well as exploring the many lovely places that Jersey has to offer!”

Tobias has proven that to get to the top, natural talent and learning new skills can help take you there; but dedication, hard work and a genuine passion and curiosity for what you do are key factors for reaching for those heights. Wise words from someone who has truly built a career from the ground up.

What made you choose to work for Ogier?

Ogier has a reputation for embracing change and thinking big, and is regularly recognised with awards for innovation, client service, and quality. This environment fosters professional growth and encourages creative problem-solving and innovative thinking. When I first heard about Ogier’s fund services team, it was new with only a handful of people. Since joining, I’ve learned about building processes and relationships from the ground up and how to make a real impact. The team has flourished since its founding and is a finalist for the 2024 Drawdown Awards. It’s exciting to be part of an award-winning team.

What professional training have you done?

In September 2018, I began my ACCA qualification. After smashing through my first exams, I was on track to finish in three years. Unfortunately, COVID struck and studying became really difficult. So, I took a more relaxed approach and, in the process, rediscovered my love of learning! It’s been a complete rollercoaster, but very rewarding. My professional development journey doesn’t stop there. Ogier embraces Lean Six Sigma, offering personalised opportunities for everyone at the firm to get involved. I will soon begin my yellow belt accreditation and plan to complete the green and esteemed black belt levels.

How does Ogier look after its people?

Ogier is committed to being a good corporate citizen, supporting its local communities through charitable donations, community partnerships and employee volunteering. I’m excited to use my paid volunteering leave to join my team’s upcoming CSR day, helping the National Trust for Jersey. The sports and social committees also offer various activities and team-building opportunities, which are great fun and a brilliant way to meet and engage with other teams.

What do you do on an average day?

Many people think being an accountant is repetitive, but every day is different and brings a new challenge! Alongside daily reconciliations and reviews, a typical day is spent problemsolving and collaborating with your team and clients to design solutions. You use your wits, experience and technical skills to remediate balances and ledgers while continuously improving processes.

What is your next step?

The future of accounting is in tech innovation. I would love to improve our clients' experiences and the teams' services by bringing these innovations to the table. Technology is ultimately here to make our lives easier. The hard part is having the creativity and persistence to implement it. Ultimately, the payoff is enormous.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Finance in Jersey is a fantastic place to work. Don't worry about having to do more years of study, it's so worth it!

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 78 AGENDA

What three skills do you need to do your job?

In my role, ‘adaptability’ is essential due to the ever-changing nature of tasks and challenges presented. It enables me to pivot quickly, adjust to new requirements and remain effective for the team in diverse situations. ‘Organisation’ is equally important. We are an ambitious team, and we need to remain on top of the job at hand to ensure we deliver results consistently. Lastly, ‘being proactive’, this empowers me to anticipate needs, identify opportunities, and take the initiative, thereby driving continuous improvement and staying ahead of potential obstacles.

What is the best bit of your job?

It’s hard to pinpoint as Rathbones has so many positive attributes. If I was to pick it would be knowing that I am in a company that supports me, values my input and my growth, whilst being in a role that allows me to be exposed to events and networks, which I typically wouldn’t get the chance to be involved in.

Favourite place to eat and what to order?

Izakaya… Chicken Gyoza to start and beef stir fried noodles for main. Nice way to spend a Sunday?

Spending a hot sunny day down on the beach with friends and family

Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and in 2016 joined Brooks Macdonald in the Business Development team, focused on private clients and intermediaries. Later becoming International Head of Trustees, building the Trust & Company, Family Office, Charitable purpose and intermediary channel.

What’s life like at Rathbones?

In essence, life at Rathbones is defined by an ongoing pursuit of excellence and putting our clients first in everything we do. Whilst having a commitment to excellence ingrained in our culture could sound corporate and boring, that could not be further from the truth. Employing and retaining talented people and having trust in each other, and from our clients, is a foundation to the company’s strength. Each person can bring their authentic self to work and client interactions, which means one minute you could be navigating the intricacies of investment management and the next supporting a local community event, or one of the team could have you crying with laughter over dinner!

What does this year hold for the Client Development Team?

Quite simply “to say the right thing, in the right way, to the right person, at the right time.”

Favourite place to eat and what to order?

Breakfast at Colleens Cafe… Full English with extra fried bread plus a doggy sausage for the hound (both well earnt post the morning sea swim).

Nice way to spend a Sunday?

When the sun’s shining, nothing beats packing the house and kids into the car for a day down at whichever beach is sheltered from the wind!

Rathbones has so many positive attributes. If I was to pick it would be knowing that I am in a company that supports me, values my input and my growth, whilst being in a role that allows me to be exposed to events and networks, which I typically wouldn’t get the chance to be involved in.

After ten years at RBC, I joined Fairbairn Private Bank (now Nedbank Private Wealth) to lead the private client and intermediary Business Development team in the Channel Islands, building an extensive network of contacts across the Channel Islands, UK and a number of International Finance Centres. For the two and a half years prior to joining Rathbones I held the role of Trust Director, initially with Nedgroup Trust and then Suntera Global following its acquisition of Nedgroup Trust. During this time, I built an investment governance framework for Suntera’s global business and acted as Investment ‘Gatekeeper’ as well as managing a portfolio of private client trust structures.

What does a typical day look like?

I’m not a morning person so usually arrive at the office by 8.30am having walked at least part of the way to get the mind and body moving. The key to my role is client interaction which typically involves meetings with trustees or private clients throughout the course of the day. Between meetings it’s all about managing email traffic to make sure responses to any enquiries are provided quickly and following up with clients and contacts to identify the next opportunity. Rathbones spends a lot of time providing educational content for trustees and part of my role is to assist in the delivery of these sessions to help raise the profile of the business and assist trustees with their client interactions on investments. With the recent acquisition of Investec Wealth & Investment I am spending time in Guernsey to help with the integration and reconnect with my trustee contacts there.

What is the hardest bit of your job?

I haven’t really found too many insurmountable challenges (yet). The team are very supportive of each other, which makes any hard questions easier to answer. A collegiate approach flows through the business and a challenge shared is undoubtedly a challenge halved!

Favourite place to eat and what to order?

Awabi………everything!

Nice way to spend a Sunday?

With my wife and son, my favourite Sundays start with a decent breakfast and then out on the bikes, weather permitting!

The local company with over 20 years’ experience in the telecommunications industry, has been setting the standard for affordable and high-speed internet services without the need for a landline.

HomeNet offers fast speeds and low cost without having to have a landline installed. With a huge decline in landline usage and as technology advances, HomeNet is the only local Telco to offer this service and firmly believes 'why pay for something you don't need or use?".

And, they are planning to take it to the next level with upcoming latest package - Road Runner. Boasting mind-boggling speeds of up to 10Gbps, free calls, and no need for a landline, Road Runner will revolutionise broadband in Jersey. Get ready to experience the future of internet services with HomeNet.

Powered by Newtel, HomeNet has always been known for providing high-quality, high-speed broadband at an affordable price and excellent customer support. This has helped the company build a loyal customer base of thousands of islanders who rely on HomeNet for their internet connection without the added cost of an unnecessary landline.

As everyone’s costs rise there is a demand for affordable super-fast broadband in Jersey and HomeNet has been expanding its network to provide speeds of up to 1Gbps for just £29.99 per month. This has made the company a popular choice for islanders who want fast and reliable internet service at an affordable price, whereas other providers are only offering speeds of 100mbps.

We are committed to providing our customers with the best possible service and support. We believe that our super-fast network, combined with our reputation for excellent customer service, sets us apart from other providers in Jersey."

Gary Whipp, CEO of HomeNet, has been leading the company for over two decades. He has played a key role in the company's growth and success, ensuring that HomeNet continues to provide islanders with unrivalled low-cost super-fast broadband during these challenging times.

Gary says, "At HomeNet, we understand the importance of having a reliable and fast internet connection without the need for a landline. A phone line simply isn't needed anymore, so why pay for something you're not going to use? With more people working from home, and a greater dependence on streaming and gaming services, we have been working hard to ensure that our network can handle the increasing demand. We are proud to offer our customers the fastest speeds on the island with the lowest price available on Jersey.

He added, "We are committed to providing our customers with the best possible service and support. We believe that our super-fast network, combined with our reputation for excellent customer service, sets us apart from other providers in Jersey."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Alex Ruddy

Alex Ruddy, Director of Oben Regulatory and Chair of Jersey’s Institute of Directors Industry Sub-Committee sits down with us to explore why being a mother hen has made her a better business woman, and why she is compelled to give back at this stage of her life to create a better tomorrow.

When I was younger I wanted be Nancy Drew, she was my absolute idol. A go-getting woman who solves mysteries and who was intelligent and courageous! But rather than go down the super sleuth pathway, I decided a career in law was for me and so studied this through University. Like most things, this didn’t entirely go to plan, as I quickly realised I would be too emotional to practice family or criminal defence law, so I drifted into an accountancy career which brought me to the island of Jersey.

I n my youth the island felt hugely claustrophobic and I was immediately desperate to qualify so I could leave. But as my exams ticked past, I started to settle and then married and welcomed a family. Now I look at the island in awe, a small jurisdiction that can be dynamic and nimble and set a shining example of good business practice. It is also a wonderful balance between a thriving metropolis and the soul-soothing cliff paths and beaches that makes me feel grateful to live here.

With three small children under my belt and working in forensic accounting (very Nancy Drew!) it all just felt like a lot, so I took a career break and followed my husband’s job to the Isle of Man where we spent three years. During this time, I did feel like I’d lost a lot of my identity and was eager to find something to drive me once more. Unknowingly, I became what I refer to as a ‘professional mum’. Expert cake-maker, parent governor, PTA enthusiast with a sprinkling of bespoke consultancy work on the side to keep my hand in. Even then, my mother-hen attitude saw me want to give back where I could to help others.

This burning compulsion to get involved continued on my return to Jersey and saw me set up Oben Regulatory, where we advise on corporate governance and regulatory framework, often helping businesses out of dilemmas. I also sit on the IoD Committee, the Board of Victoria College and organise the Run for Kezia following the loss of one of my daughter’s friends to suicide. Wellbeing is of high importance on my agenda, from teaching it in schools to practices in the workplace and beyond. We need to protect our young people and give them a voice, since they are our leaders of tomorrow. My children are my inspiration. Hugely

driven, with a daughter who is going big places and is so passionate about all that she does, especially raising awareness of Lupus for those on island. A son who has overcome enormous adversity and is a great example of resilience. I had two children on chemotherapy at the same time and it was amazing to witness their use of humour with each other carry them through the worst of it. All three of my kids are extraordinary in their own way and they drive me to make the world a better place. Facilitating women back into the workplace after

Unknowingly, I became what I refer to as a ‘professional mum’. Expert cake-maker, parent governor, PTA enthusiast with a sprinkling of bespoke consultancy work on the side to keep my hand in. Even then, my mother-hen attitude saw me want to give back where I could to help others.

motherhood or a career break is another area where I want to help more. I want women to see that they can have it all and balance a home life and a career, pursuing their passions and finding assistance and support when and where they need it. The IoD is a community of inspirational women that holds the power to encourage women to achieve their goals and we are working hard to inspire not just new mums back into work, but younger girls to broaden their horizons too.

To stay ahead in business you have to evolve with the times, adjusting to digital and technological advances and changing demands placed on organisations. Collaboration is key in this race, so working panels and committees are an important part of my world. I try to explore the issues that face all sectors on the island and provide a voice to Government so we can look at joint solutions for one and all. I am often overwhelmed by the kindness of the Jersey community and how many want to give back for the greater good, but there is still a lot more that could be achieved by people recognising their strengths, skill sets and the amazing difference they could make. If we could all contribute just a little bit of our time, Jersey would have a really bright future.

Giles Robson is a multi-award-winning, internationally recognised blues harmonica virtuoso, singer, and showman. He has been described as “a blues giant, absolute master of the form” by Alligator Records and is the only UK or European artist to appear on this legendary blues record label. He is widely considered one of the greatest living blues harmonica players, and his albums feature in the critic polls of the world’s most prestigious music magazines. I asked Giles about the inspiration behind his craft, as well as the many twists and turns that have led him to where he is now.

It’s got edges,

and so has life

Giles Robson on the blues, and their reflection of ‘us’.

Words: Emma Pallent Photography: Danny Evans

If it were not for an unforgettable school trip to Toledo, Giles Robson may not have become the “blues giant” he is internationally recognised as being. At the age of 14, Giles already had experience playing both the violin and saxophone. He left the former in pursuit of the latter after discovering a passion for ‘Big Band Jazz’. However, this newfound love could not hold his attention, and he abandoned horn riffs and swings in search of the raw intimacy of the blues.

For Giles, it was love at first sight in the streets of Spain. Swept up in the whirlwind of it all, he brought home a harmonica, and began a musical love affair that characterised the rest of his life. In an uncanny twist of fateor destiny - the week he returned to Jersey was the week Cephas & Wiggins, an African American blues duo, played at the Arts Centre. Reminiscing on this turn of events, Giles recalls that “seeing the real thing live so early set me on my course”. And what a course it was - the harmonica player ended up on the same record label as this inspiring duo 24 years later.

Since then Giles has become an internationally recognised blues player, and has been accredited with being “one of the finest blues harmonica virtuosos in the world”. He tours over fifteen countries a year and works with some of the most legendary figures in the blues music scene. He won the Blues Music Award in Memphis for best acoustic album, which then became the Living Blues album of the decade. He sold out 10 nights on the Edinburgh Fringe, and has been supported by the likes of Sir Mick Jagger, Billy Branch, Joe Louis Walker, John Primer and Sugar Blue. Commenting on these partnerships, Giles expressed that when he “hits the stage with one of these musical legends, and we achieve a strong musical connection that overcomes age, race and social differences, we create musical magic for the audience. This makes me feel profoundly blessed and grateful”.

It is the performance aspect of the blues that has ensured its survival in the modern day music scene. Whilst most other genres are consumed via track recordings, the blues are a testament to true, ‘living’ music. The community aspect of the genre is its defining one, and whilst other styles use live events as advertising for their records, Giles remarks that “the business with the blues was always

W WW.GALLERY.JE @GALLERYMAGAZINE 85 MUSIC

live concerts, with the records being advertisements for the shows”. For the avid consumer of blues, streaming a track offers only a layer of the music - soaking in a live performance is what provides the full shebang. The genre’s fixed structure makes it instantly recognisable to any listener, a familiarity that allows Giles the pleasure of “building up an incredible amount of audience sympathy and trust almost immediately”.

“They know where each song is going, and as such they become entranced throughout an entire show. That’s pretty miraculous, and keeps people coming back for more. It is the repeating custom at concerts that keeps the genre alive and well.”

Memphis Slim, an inspiration of Giles Robson’s, said that “if you take one step towards an audience, they will take two steps towards you”. It is a mantra that rings true to Giles’ experience, where he has facilitated intimate audience conversations all across the globe. It’s what he tries to do in all his shows, to “really engage and have a relationship with the audience”. Whether its in a bar in Moscow or a show in Mississippi, “the genre is equally understood across the world, even between places and people who couldn’t be more different”.

“We are living in divisive political times, and art and music are one of the great unifiers of people”.

This relational sentiment applies equally to the musicians on the stage, and Giles has commented on the powerful feeling of performing alongside other half, Robbin Kapsalis. Speaking of this intimacy between him and the beautiful alto singer, Giles expressed that “it’s always magical getting to work with Robbin as the deep connection we have translates really well into a powerful on stage call and response. This could only happen with the blues. Other types of music, with more fixed structures and less of an improvisational aspect, wouldn’t facilitate this kind of onstage magic.”

Despite accumulating a lifetimes worth of achievements, the blues are not done with Giles yet. When I asked him about his plans for the future, he revealed that he is currently concentrating on his upcoming shows “Up Close with the Blues”. These ticketed events are for audiences of only 35-50 people.

Commenting on his decision to play for smaller audiences, Giles disclosed “whilst most musicians want to make their living by playing to as many people as possible, I want to make my living playing to as few people as possible”.

For Giles, it is the intimacy of the blues that “creates wonderful atmospheric evenings”, and these smaller gatherings are his self-professed “sweet spot”. Those in Jersey can find him playing in venues such as Sumas Restaurant, The Porter’s Store and The Blue Note, as well as many other places across the island.

Memphis Slim nicknamed the blues ‘the truths’, a statement that reverberates down to the genre’s roots. It is why the blues has permeated into every aspect of the modern day; they are a testament to the hard realities of human existence. By celebrating and singing through both joy and suffering, the blues “look trouble straight in the eye, laugh, and then allow you to live and fight another day”. The age-old tunes accumulate in the soundtracks of our lives, providing catharsis in the face of heartbreak, adversity and grief. They are ultimately “a music of survival… based in real life experience”, and if the past can tell us anything, the genre is here to stay.

Giles appears at The Porters Store on 25th April and th Blues Festival at the Havre des Pas Lido on May 26th.

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 88 MUSIC

Reuben Maric is a Jersey boy done good, after an appearance at Glastonbury, he is returning to the island for a jazz programme at Hamptonne alongside internationally renowned stars Jason Rebello and Tim Garland. Ruben originally played in the Liberation Festival as a teenager and was chosen to be a local composer in residence. He is supported by Music In Action and we asked him about his life and music.

At what age did you start making music and how did you start? I started making music when I was really young, just making silly songs with my dad. I’d basically just do a stream of consciousness freestyle rap and he’d record it and add an instrumental track underneath. But my first real experience of making music on my own would have been a semiimprovised piano piece I performed at the war tunnels during the liberation festival back in 2011, inspired by the music of Messiaen.

What do you play and what’s your vibe?

I play keyboards and piano, as well as composing music. The music I play is really broad, and I collaborate with a lot of different groups of musicians but the common theme across most of it is energetic, dancey music. Within that though I think what I bring is a bit more of a vulnerable, emotional sound, drawing on a combination of my classical training mixed with contemporary jazz.

Why does music matter to you?

I love all kinds of art, but for me music is the most visceral and immediate form of art. I love how tangible and personal it can be, and I feel like the abstract nature of music lets it take on a new life when people interpret it through the lens of their own thoughts and experience.

What did you think was great about Jersey when growing up?

Firstly, Youth Arts Jersey was absolutely pivotal for me growing up. A lot of my best memories as a teenager happened there or with people I met there. It’s such a great place for young people with absolutely amazing staff.

Secondly, studying with Chris George at the Jersey Academy of Music was amazing for me, I was so privileged to be given opportunities to write for and collaborate with professional musicians from the UK and beyond, which was really eye opening for me when I was younger.

‘Glastonbury was absolutely mad, on a completely different scale from any other festival we’ve played. The tent we were playing was quite deep in the festival grounds so we got to drive through the site when we arrived - but the place was so packed with people that even with two marshals clearing the way in front of the car we were barely going faster than walking pace’.

Interview: Meryl Laisney Photography: Misha Warren

What is your favourite place on earth?

I’m from the east, so that little spot past Archirondel Tower where the sea has broken up the stones holds a special place for me. Probably either that or Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds, where Plantfood had our first headline gig.

Who is your favourite song writer?

For me right now it’s probably Chris Thile (Punch Brothers). I’ve been captivated since hearing “the Old Shade Tree” on his duo album with Brad Meldhauwhich was also my introduction to Brad’s playing - but particularly the Punch Brothers album “All Ashore” is a standout for me. The lyricism in the title track is stunning.

What was playing at Glastonbury like?

Glastonbury was absolutely mad, on a completely different scale from any other festival we’ve played. The tent we were playing was quite deep in the festival grounds so we got to drive through the site when we arrived - but the place was so packed with people that even with two marshals clearing the way in front of the car we were barely going faster than walking pace.

We were playing on Saturday night so we had a good couple of days to watch all the world-class acts and get properly nervous about our set - and the energy backstage was a crazy mix of nerves and adrenaline before we went on. Thankfully a few mates from Jersey showed up in the crowd which made it a lot easier.

Which star would you choose to have dinner with?

Probably Joni Mitchell!

What can we look forward to from you next with your music?

Plantfood have some really exciting material that we’re sitting on for now. We were fortunate enough to receive funding from Help Musicians and spent a few days in the studio last year, so some of that should be seeing release pretty soon!

“It’s not about what leggings you have on”, and it certainly isn’t all ‘love and light’

Lisa McCabe on the raw reality bolstering the practice of yoga.

Lisa McCabe, founder of OmShanti Yoga Living, is a ‘self confessed anatomy geek’ who has dedicated decades to the study of Yoga, Anatomy and Physiology. Her company is Jersey’s only Yoga Therapy Studio and Training School, where she welcomes those of all levels to partake in her sessions.

Alongside her studio, she conducts Health Screenings and offers Lifestyle Medicine to individuals and organisations through her clinic, Optimal Health and Wellbeing. She has studied with some of the world’s leading Yoga teachers, and these individuals have had a great influence on her work. Recently, it is her love for her husband and two children that have inspired her to do what she does. I got in touch with Lisa to discover the values that lie at the core of yoga, as well as how the practise can help us better ourselves and our community.

A recent Tai Chi class is the closest I’ve gotten to yoga in a while. I hold no aversion to the practise, I am merely intimidated by it. Nevertheless, one evening I found myself coaxed through the studio doors by the sweet smells of lemongrass, lavender, and the promise of enlightenment. Unfortunately, I spent less time reaching this higher state of being and more time trying to reach my own toes. My teacher was kind, refraining from commenting on my lopsided flexibility and deflated mountain pose, but this didn’t stop me from feeling like a yoga fraud with all the spirituality of a brick wall. My predicament was that I also didn’t belong within the camp of ‘fitness yoga’ - a trend characterised by Lululemon leggings, Chilly’s bottles and ClassPass. I found myself sat on the fence between two worlds. However, my recent conversation with Lisa McCabe has led me to understand yoga and its related practises in a different way.

“Just because you practise yoga does not mean you will live above the human existence. It does not detach you from reality. We live in a very real world, and yoga is about how we can use our practise to show up as a better person”.

Lisa’s words were like sight to the blind. Here was a woman, telling me I could practise yoga without feeling like the end goal was to “levitate and save the world”. Not that levitating and saving the world are bad outcomes - to be honest, I’d love to do both. But Lisa’s focus on the relationship between yoga, anatomy and physiology, was something that seemed tangible enough for me to wrap my head around. When practised therapeutically, yoga can help individuals overcome addiction, trauma and grief, and helping these people is at the core of Lisa’s work.

Lisa has learnt from the best in her trade, and devoted herself to the path of Svadhyaya, or ‘self study’. For her, this is the idea that “we will never know everything, about yoga and all subjects… we are constantly learning more about the human body, constantly learning more about the brain, and yoga is the same”. It is a path that has led her down an inspiring route of lifelong learning, and for the last ten years, she has studied under the founder of Yoga Medicine, Tiffany Cruikshank. Her studies with Tiffany has allowed her to effectively prescribe a “blend of both Eastern and Western medicine” to those desiring a more “holistic approach to yoga”. The aim behind everything she does is to direct people towards a life characterised by kindness, love and self-improvement - all of which have a ripple effect in ameliorating the wider community.

These ideas will be explored further on 18th May at the Ommaroo Hotel (09:30-12:00), where Lisa is hosting bestselling author Nadia Gilani at her workshop ‘It’s not all Love and Light’. The event will focus on discovering ‘how yoga serves as a powerful tool for overcoming life’s obstacles, empowering us to embody the best versions of ourselves, both on and off the mat’. It will be an opportunity to build community with tea and refreshments, and get to grips with the fact that “yoga has so many more benefits other than putting yourself into really strange positions”. If you want to learn more about the raw reality behind yoga and its industry, as well as how Nadia has made the practice more accessible to those that need it most, this event is not one to miss. At the very least - or perhaps the very most - it is an opportunity to join together and “hear someone else’s story”.

Gaz Fitchett

on raising a new generation of Jersey Warriors.

Graeme (Gaz) Fitchett has worked for Centrepoint since 2002, an organisation dedicated to delivering high-quality, accessible childcare. He is currently Head of Playcare, Complex Needs and Charitable Development, and previous to setting up Jersey Warriors he founded ‘Street Angels’ - a Street Dance and Graffiti Club for children. The inspiration behind everything he does is the kids and his fellow staff: ‘Centrepoint is a huge part of my life and I have loved every minute of it’. I got in touch with Graeme to find out more about Jersey Warriors, and the exciting future the club has ahead of it.

I don’t know what I expected when I began researching the Jersey Warriors, but it certainly wasn’t a video of a boy wall-running like a ninja. Dodgeball in hand, the team’s TikTok star leaps up onto studio mirrors with all the agility of a gazelle. I have since been told by Graeme Fitchett - the founder of Jersey’s first dodgeball club - that certain members of the team are no stranger to acrobatics. On every suitable occasion, the kids are flipping and tumbling like Spider-man prodigies. It is an activity that naturally requires the appropriate costume. For identity concealment, of course.

A few years ago, Graeme and his colleague set out on a mission to get more children active. After exploring a myriad of different ideas, they stumbled upon dodgeball. The sport is insanely popular for primary schoolers - a fact that doesn’t surprise me given its similarity to Parkour. For Graeme, this was the start of it all. He explained that “having enjoyed playing dodgeball with kids and participating in competitions organised by Gallery Magazine and the British Heart Foundation, I saw an opportunity to start a team on the island”. Inspired by the idea, and the lack of existing Jersey teams, Graeme birthed the club that would later facilitate the growth of every aspiring Daniel LaRusso.

The club has been up and running for two years now, providing local children with the opportunity to engage with the thrilling sport in a welcoming

and inclusive setting. Graeme strives to “create a fun and supportive environment for everyone to enjoy”, cultivating team values such as “patience, passion, open communication, creativity, and respect”. After all, for a nine year old, what else says ‘let’s be friends’ better than hurling balls at one another across a brightly-lit sports studio.

The popularity of the team’s mantra - “thrive and have fun” - is proven by Jersey Warriors’ significant recent expansion. “We’ve seen remarkable growth over the past year, sometimes welcoming up to 60 children in a week,” notes Graeme, adding “it’s been amazing to witness the increased interest and participation in our dodgeball club”. Jersey Warriors currently provide three sessions a week to keep up with the demand for dodgeball amongst a wide array of enthusiastic juniors. Plans are also brewing regarding the introduction of a new, adults dodgeball team. Links have been made with a club in Guernsey, who are eager to collaborate despite the age-old island rivalry. Jersey Warriors are also ecstatic about this potential partnership, commenting “it’s great to see interest growing beyond Jersey!”. It certainly is an interesting prospect, begging the question - does dodgeball have the power to unite the Montagues and the Capulets?

In support of Centrepoint’s 40th anniversary, Jersey Warriors are hosting the Jersey Dodgeball Charity Championships at Les Ormes Sports Centre. Naturally, this will commence on May the 4th, and I have every faith in our very own dodgeball troopers. Expect a buzzing atmosphere fuelled by the irresistible music of DJ Trev; a man who has mastered the art of “setting the stage for an unforgettable day of action”. Building anticipation for the big day, Graeme has promised that “teams can look forward to spirited matches, creative team entrances, and exciting fundraising activities”.

For more information on Jersey Warriors and what they offer, you can visit their website. Alternatively, you can check our their work through following their Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok accounts. Just don’t be surprised if you spot a Spiderman… or two.
